PoliticsCritiquing Snippets From Garba Shehu’s Book by ogododo(op): 6:08am On Jul 21, 2025
Recently, eminent Nigerians converged at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre, Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, for the launch of Malam Garba Shehu’s book, “According to the President: Lessons from a presidential spokesperson’s experience”.

While I have not read the whole book, I saw snippets in the media. For instance, one of the snippets trending in the media is the admission by Shehu that he fabricated the much-publicised story of rats invading the office of President Muhammadu Buhari. According to Shehu, the story was a deliberate “spin” to divert public attention from the mounting speculation about the President’s medical condition and ability to govern, following the return of the President from a three-month medical vacation in the United Kingdom on August 19, 2017.

The former presidential spokesman explained that the announcement of the Presidency that Buhari would be working from home, rather than his office, further stirred public scepticism, amid the already tense situation created by the leader of Indigenous Peoples of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, who claimed that Buhari died and was replaced by a Sudanese Clone named Jibrin. From what I gathered from the snippets, Shehu made that confession in Chapter 10 of his book, titled “Rats, Spin and All That”.

As somebody professionally trained to believe that truth in public communication is crucial for building trust and fostering a healthy society, I found myself in very deep emotional confusion after reading the confession of Shehu. I did not know whether to start laughing or crying. Although I am an avid reader of books across disciplines, I immediately became disinclined to read the book, not knowing if it would be worth the time doing so.

Explainer: Cholera

Unless Shehu wants Nigerians to believe that some “human” rats (or a cabal) had unfettered access to the office of the President in his absence, he engaged in unpardonable unethical conduct by making up a story, no matter what prompted him to do so. If Nnamdi Kanu was spreading disinformation by claiming that Jibrin from Sudan replaced Buhari, should a presidential spokesman debunk falsehood with falsehood? Two wrongs cannot make a right.

Based on the snippets from the book, Shehu confessed that the rat story he made up ranked among the five top news items in the BBC World News Bulletin. If information emanating from the Presidency in Nigeria can no longer be trusted internationally, then we are in big trouble in this country.

It was needless for Shehu to have fabricated a story, more so, such an embarrassing one, to deflect attention from the health condition of the President. After all, the President is human. No human being is immune to sickness. If Shehu had reasoned professionally under the circumstances that he found himself when the President returned and was working from home, there were other things he would have done to douse the anxiety in the country, instead of fabricating the rat story.

I remember that while the President was on that long medical vacation, the Minister of Information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, took some media aides of the President, including Femi Adesina and Lauretta Onochie, to the United Kingdom, where they took photographs with the President and published them in the media. Luckily, technology has made it possible to verify the date that a photograph was taken.

Instead of acting professionally, Shehu resorted to blatant falsehood under the guise of a spin. Granted that a spin is not totally unacceptable in public communication when and where necessary, it does not include the dissemination of fabricated and unfounded information.

Like I said earlier in this article, the truth is vital in public communication for us to build trust and a healthy society. This standard cannot be compromised for any reason. Public communication is one of the tools in public relations. I may not have the luxury to start differentiating between propaganda and public relations here. Although people use them interchangeably, they are not the same thing.

Propaganda has negative connotations, such as fixing, sugar coating and whitewashing. In propaganda, facts are slanted, distorted or twisted to mislead the public. On the other hand, public relations (the job of presidential spokespersons) aims to build a reputation and create goodwill. As a career, modern public relations has outgrown propaganda. This is by the way.

A presidential spokesperson going all out to fabricate stories for whatever purposes would injure the reputation of the President and make him lose the goodwill of the people. I leave it to Nigerians to measure Buhari’s reputation and the amount of goodwill he enjoyed among Nigerians by the time he left office on May 28, 2023, after spending eight years in office as the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Unless Shehu intends to do restitution to Nigerians for feeding them with fabricated information from the Presidential Villa, I guess that if he had consulted a meticulous publisher, he would have been advised to leave out the chapter on the rat invasion hoax in the Villa, at least, for the sake of national interest and to avoid worsening the country’s already battered international image.

Finally, I cannot end this article without appreciating the book reviewer at the book launch, Professor Umaru Pate, the Vice Chancellor of Federal University, Kashere, Gombe State. I first met him in 2014 at Premier Hotel, Ibadan, Oyo State, where he was one of our resource persons at a workshop on Conflict Sensitive Reporting organised for selected journalists by the United Nations Development Programme. It was indeed a memorable encounter. I cannot forget in a hurry the knowledge that we gained from him during that workshop.

However, I beg to differ with the erudite Professor of Mass Communication that Shehu’s book should be recommended for journalists, political aides, PR professionals and students of governance and media studies, seeking to understand how power communicates and how communication shapes power.

I am sceptical about using a book celebrating disinformation to groom people in media leadership development, which is among the things that Shehu wants to achieve with his book. Power should not communicate with falsehood. Rather than shape, communication with falsehood corrupts power. Corruption of power undermines democracy, creates economic instability, inequality and social injustice.

PoliticsLate Awujale Told Me I Would Lead Nigeria For Eight Years — Tinubu by ogododo(op): 9:41pm On Jul 20, 2025
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has revealed that the late Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Dr. Sikiru Kayode Adetona, had predicted his presidency and assured him he would be re-elected for a second term.

Tinubu made the disclosure on Sunday during his remarks at the 8th Day Fidau Prayers held in honour of the late monarch, describing the royal father’s blessing as instrumental to his political success.

“I was successful because of your support and the blessing of the late Awujale. I came to him and he blessed me. And he said, ‘You will win that election and you will be re-elected. Go ahead,’” Tinubu said.

He described the late Oba as a man of deep wisdom, noting that Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State had carried forward the monarch’s legacy of leadership and insight.

The President, in a moment of gratitude and humour, also commended Governor Abiodun, whom he referred to as “eleyi of Ogun State” for his dedication to the late monarch’s wellbeing.

“I won’t bring out his other titles. Okanlomo, eleyi of Ogun State. At this stage, I must mention clearly how much I thanked him for taking care of our father,” he added.

BusinessLagos Butchers Lament Soaring Meat Prices, Urge Govt Intervention by ogododo(op): 4:22pm On Jul 20, 2025
The Lagos State Butchers Association has attributed the recent spike in beef prices to transportation challenges caused by flooding in the northern part of the country.

They also called for urgent government intervention through ranching to address the challenges in the sector.

The association’s patron, Alhaji Bamidele Kazeem, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Lagos.

Kazeem said the cost of beef had increased drastically in recent weeks in Lagos, putting a significant strain on household budgets.

The flooding in the North has affected how cows are brought down to Lagos. Transporting them is now more difficult and expensive,” he said.
He added that aside from the rise in transportation costs, some traders were taking advantage of the situation to inflate prices further.

You know our people, they take the slightest opportunity to hike prices,” he said.
Kazeem explained that there were no major changes in the supply chain apart from logistics, adding that prices could stabilise if alternative transportation systems were improved.

If the government can help us upgrade the rail system, the prices can come down; that’s the only way forward in the short term,” he said.

The patron also highlighted ranching as a long-term solution to recurring challenges in the meat supply chain.

“To me, the only solution is this ranching.
The government is still trying with the ranching programme, and we need to support that effort.
“The Eko Ranching project is part of the state’s efforts to revamp the red meat value chain, ensuring proper hygiene and quality control,” he said.

He said by implementing the project, the Lagos State Government aims to promote local cattle rearing, reduce reliance on imports, and enhance food security.

“The project is expected to have a positive impact on the state’s economy and the livelihoods of butchers and cattle rearers.

He urged authorities to invest in both rail infrastructure and sustainable ranching to ensure a steady, affordable meat supply across the country.
A butcher at the Ogba Market area of the state, Alhaji Isa Ahmed, told NAN that the cows they used to buy between N1.1 million and N1.15 million before Sallah had increased between N1.2 million and N1.3 million, depending on the size.

Ahmed said one kilo of meat in the major Lagos markets is N7,000 as against N5,000 some months ago.

Ahmed said they brought cows from Niger and Chad, noting that the development contributes to the current hike in beef prices.

Another butcher who pleaded anonymity attributed the price hike to the greed of retailers.

“The increase is not that bad; people are just used to painting narratives to increase prices unnecessarily,” he said.

It’s Too Late: You Cannot Buy the North with Token Appointments

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has described the recent announcement of appointments by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as a “desperate, cynical attempt to buy back the trust that he has spent over a year squandering, particularly in Northern Nigeria.”

In a statement signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC dismissed the so-called appointments as “too little, too late,” adding that “you cannot marginalise a region for over twenty-five months and expect applause because you suddenly remembered on the twenty-sixth month that Nigeria is bigger than Lagos State

According to the ADC, these appointments are nothing more than “political panic management,” a frantic attempt to bandage the gaping wounds inflicted on Northern Nigeria by over a year of calculated neglect, presidential arrogance and unprecedented nepotism.

“For over a year, this government turned a blind eye as bandits terrorised villages in the north, as our farmers abandoned their land, and as rural economies crumbled under the weight of poorly thought-out fuel subsidy removal,” Abdullahi said. “Now, under the rising heat of public discontent, and with the emergence of a formidable opposition coalition gaining traction in the North and across the country, President Tinubu suddenly remembers that there are Nigerians to appoint into positions outside his Lagos.”

“Every major decision of this administration, from subsidy removal to a majority of the political appointments, have been taken without the North at the table. Now that the consequences of those decisions have become glaring, the President is doling out appointments as consolation prizes. But Northerners as co-owners of our great federal republic know better than to be deceived by these token appointments. They see through President Tinubu’s actions — and can sense that this is not genuine. Tokenism is not inclusion, and symbolism is not governance,” the ADC spokesperson said.

The ADC concluded by urging the Tinubu administration to abandon what it described as “Bourdillon-style appeasement politics,” and embrace real national inclusion through consultation, policy equity, and sincere federal character.

“You cannot patch a broken roof with press releases and photo-ops. And you certainly cannot restore the trust that you have lost with the public by pretending that titles are a substitute for genuine commitment to nation-building.” (

PoliticsICPC: How Civil Servants Diverted World Bank Funds To Reconstruct Boko Haram-rav by ogododo(op): 6:52pm On Jul 18, 2025
At least two civil servants have been arraigned for allegedly diverting funds released by the World Bank for the rehabilitation of schools affected by insurgency in Adamawa State.

Specifically, the officials identified as Mr. Popoona Samuel and Mr. Arama Davies Gyandi, were arraigned at the Federal High Court sitting in Yola by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission.

The spokesman of the ICPC, Demola Bakare, told journalists on Friday that the duo were taken to court on Wednesday before Justice Tijjani G. Ringin on a four-count charge.

According to Bakare, the charges bordered on money laundering and retention or conversion of proceeds of an unlawful act.

Both Samuel and Gyandi reportedly served as officers under the State Education Investment Project in the Office of the Accountant General of Adamawa State until 2020.

The ICPC spokesman explained that investigations revealed they allegedly conspired to launder funds belonging to the School-Based Management Committees of primary schools in the state.

He said counts one and two of the charges read thus: “That you, Popoona Samuel (M) and Arama Davies Gyandi (M), sometime in the year 2020,at Adamawa State within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, while serving as State Education Investment Project Officers in the Office of The Accountant General of Adamawa State, did conspire among yourselves to commit an offence of money laundering, to wit: you took possession of the total sum ofN2,400,000.00 (Two Million, Four Hundred Thousand Naira) refunded by the School-Based Management Committee of Kwaja Primary School, Mubi South, which was paid into Zenith Bank Plc Account No: 2116268547 belonging to Popoona Samuel, out of which the sum of N1,000,000.00 (One Million Naira) was transferred to UBA Plc Account No: 2302541629 belonging to Arama Davies Gyandi, being part of the funds provided by the World Bank for the renovation of primary schools affected by insurgency in Adamawa, state when you reasonably ought to have known that the said sums formed part of the proceeds of an unlawful act to wit: corruption.

“That you, Popoona Samuel (M), sometime in the year 2020, at Adamawa State within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, while serving as the State Education investment Project Officer in the Office of the Accountant General of Adamawa State, did take possession of the sum of N2,500,000.00 (Two Million, Five Hundred Thousand Naira) refunded by the School-Based Management Committee of Mutuku Primary School, Hong, from Unity Bank Plc Account No:0042530017 and the sum of N2,400,000.00 (Two Million, Four Hundred Thousand Naira) refunded by the School-Based Management Committee of Kwaja Primary School, Mubi South, into your Zenith Bank Plc Account No:2116268547, being part of the funds provided by the World Bank for the renovation of primary schools affected by insurgency in Adamawa State, when you reasonably ought to have known that the said sums formed part of the proceeds of an unlawful act to wit: corruption.”

He told journalists that the defendants, however, pleaded not guilty to all charges when read to them.

Bakare said in view of the ‘not guilty’ pleas entered by the defendants, counsel to the ICPC, Mr. T.S. Iorngee, applied to the court for a date for the commencement of trial.

“Counsel to the defendants, S.J. Wugira, on his part, moved an application for bail for his clients, which the court granted under the following terms:
“Bail bond of ₦5,000,000 (Five Million Naira) with one surety in like sum. The surety must be a Federal Public Servant or Adamawa State Government Public Servant on salary grade level 14 and above, or a traditional ruler not below the rank of District Head, or a Director of a company registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) with a share capital of at least ₦10,000,000.

“Additionally, the Defendants and their surety are to provide: Two recent passport photographs, official means of identification, a valid registered phone number, an affidavit of means, a recommendation letter from the Defendants’ counsel, utility bills, and a proper verification of the residential address of the surety by the court and the prosecution.”

The anti-graft agency officers said the case was, thereafter, adjourned to 22nd October 2025 for the commencement of the trial.

PoliticsBuhari Had A Cabal In Aso Rock That Bypassed Directives, Says Former Chief Of St by ogododo(op): 1:46pm On Jul 18, 2025
Speaking on Inside Sources on Channels TV, the seasoned diplomat and scholar made stunning disclosures about the inner workings of Muhammadu Buhari's government, the real influence of the so-called cabal, and the institutional weaknesses that allowed critical decisions to be hijacked or bypassed.

Former Chief of Staff to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, Prof. Ibrahim Agboola Gambari, has confirmed the existence of a cabal in Aso Rock during the Buhari presidency, describing it as a recurring feature in every Nigerian administration.

“There was a cabal in Aso Rock during Buhari’s administration—just like in every other administration,” Gambari said. “Some may call them a kitchen cabinet, others call them a think tank. Obasanjo also had a group of people like that. It’s the nature of the office of the President.”

“Every President has a circle of people, both within and outside government, that they confide in and listen to freely. Though some are more powerful than others, every government has them,” he said.

“But with Buhari, they knew their limits.”

Gambari, who served as Chief of Staff between 2020 and 2023, emphasised that although such informal power blocs exist in all governments, Buhari’s cabal was peculiar. He disclosed that some members wielded unusual influence, even managing to circumvent official channels despite Buhari’s directives.

“When I was appointed as Chief of Staff, the President made it clear that every memo must pass through my office—even the Vice President complied. Yet, some people still found ways to bypass the process. They knew the weak points—who to use—and he never stopped them,” he said.

The former UN Under-Secretary-General did not mention names. Still, his comments corroborate long-standing allegations that Buhari’s presidency was hijacked by a shadowy clique often blamed for controversial decisions and opacity in governance.

Insiders and political analysts have often pointed fingers at individuals close to Buhari, including members of his extended family and powerful aides, accused of running a parallel government.

These speculations peaked during the late stages of his presidency when ministers, lawmakers, and even governors complained about limited access to the president.

Gambari, however, stated that while the cabal existed, Buhari remained in charge, selectively.

“When some memos came back to me and we talked about certain decisions, he would immediately change some. But for others, he would say, ‘Prof., let this go—just to protect me,’” he revealed.

How Late Buhari's Eight-Year Tenure Plunged Nigeria Into Economic Decline, Deepened Poverty — SBM Report

A research and political risk analysis firm, SBM Intelligence, has said that late former President, Muhammadu Buhari, left behind a legacy of economic decline as president from 2015 to 2023.

The organisation said that Buhari’s eight-year tenure plunged Nigeria into deep economic and social failure despite isolated gains.

During the Buhari administration (2015-2023), Nigeria faced significant decline.,” the organisation said in a post on its X (formerly Twitter) account.

GDP per capita plummeted by 38% to $1,597, accompanied by two recessions.”

According to SBM Intelligence, Buhari’s administration, which began amid high public expectations and a promise to fight corruption, boost the economy, and improve security, ultimately left Nigeria “poorer, less secure, and more indebted.”

Despite foreign reserve growth and a 160% growth in rice production, poverty deepened. Overall, Buhari's legacy points to Nigeria becoming poorer, less secure, and more indebted.“

The data presented by the organisation showed sharp economic downturns, stressing that Inflation more than doubled, reaching 24.66% by the time Buhari left office.

Inflation more than doubled to 24.66%, while oil production fell 30%,” it stated.

Also, oil production, Nigeria’s economic lifeblood, dropped by 30%, even as the country battled with oil theft, vandalism, and declining global demand.

The organisation noted that social indicators were equally grim with unemployment tripling to 33.2%, while healthcare deteriorated.

“Socially, unemployment tripled to 33.2%, healthcare deteriorated from 1 doctor per 4000 patients to 1 doctor per 9000, and 10.5 million children remained out of school as education's share of the budget fell from 10.7% to 4.95%,” SBM Intelligence stated.

The organization further noted that insecurity reached alarming levels under Buhari’s leadership.

It stated that an average of 15,000 violent deaths occurred annually, driven by insurgency in the northeast, banditry in the northwest, and farmer-herder conflicts in the middle belt.

On the fiscal side, it stated that Nigeria’s national debt quadrupled, but unfortunately, the debt surge did not correspond with meaningful infrastructure development.

“Over 15,000 violent deaths occurred each year on average, and the national debt quadrupled without infrastructure growth,” it stated.

The SBM Intelligence’s statement added to ongoing controversies about Buhari’s long-term impact on Nigeria.

While his supporters have often pointed to his agricultural reforms, infrastructure projects, and efforts to strengthen anti-corruption institutions, critics have accused his administration of economic mismanagement, human rights violations, and an over-reliance on borrowing.

Buhari, a retired major general and former military ruler from 1983 to 1985, was elected in 2015 as a “change candidate” under the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Buhari, who was re-elected in 2019 and left office in May 2023 when he handed over power to the current President, Bola Tinubu, died on Sunday July 13, 2025 in London.

While tributes have poured in since his passing, SBM’s sobering assessment serves as a reminder that his legacy remains contested.

BusinessCBN Injects $4.1bn To Defend Naira As Reserves Decline by ogododo(op): 8:02am On Jul 17, 2025
Apex bank’s support for naira soared by 215% in H1

The Central Bank of Nigeria injected a total of $4.1bn into the foreign exchange market in the first half of 2025, a move aimed at stabilising the naira and easing liquidity pressures in the currency market.

This figure, which is more than three times the $1.3bn recorded during the same period in 2024, was contained in the latest CSL Stockbrokers’ H2 2025 Outlook report. According to an analysis of the data from the report, there was a 215% increase. CSL Stockbrokers Limited is a member of FCMB Group and also a member of the Nigerian Stock Exchange.

This came as industry analysts expressed concerns over the sustainability of the currency defence strategy, citing weak oil earnings, subdued foreign portfolio investment inflows, and uncertainties around external financing.

However, members of the Organised Private Sector argued that no responsible central bank would allow market forces to solely determine the value of its currency without some form of intervention to ensure stability.

Also, The PUNCH observed that Nigeria’s gross external reserves fell by $3.67bn in the first half of 2025, based on data obtained from the Central Bank of Nigeria.

According to the CSL Stockbrokers’ report, the CBN’s aggressive intervention reflects a stronger commitment to defending the naira amid persistent volatility and weak capital inflows. The naira, which opened the year at N1,535 to the US dollar in the official market, appreciated slightly to N1,530/$ by the end of June, supported largely by these FX injections.

The report read, “The local currency, which opened the year at around N1,535/$ in the official market, posted a marginal appreciation to close the first half at around N1,530/$, reflecting a YTD gain of 0.4 per cent. This relative stability was largely underpinned by sizable interventions from the CBN, which we believe helped contain depreciation pressures, especially during periods of heightened volatility.

“Notably, the apex bank injected about $4.1bn into the FX market in H1 2025, well above the $1.3bn provided during the same period last year, demonstrating a stronger commitment to supporting market liquidity.”

CSL noted that the apex bank’s interventions were most pronounced in April, when the naira temporarily weakened to N1,630/$ following heightened investor risk aversion triggered by the announcement of new US trade tariffs.

“It is worth highlighting that in April, when foreign currency inflows were limited and the exchange rate temporarily weakened to as high as N1,630/US$, amid investor risk aversion triggered by the announcement of US trade tariffs, net FX inflows from the CBN surged to the highest level so far this year,” the report stated.

Despite the interventions, CSL expressed concerns over the sustainability of the currency defence strategy, citing weak oil earnings, subdued foreign portfolio investment inflows, and uncertainties around external financing.

Oil exports, which accounted for roughly 86 per cent of Nigeria’s total exports in 2024, are projected to fall by 20 per cent year-on-year to $36.4bn in 2025 due to lower prices and production constraints. On the capital market front, the report highlighted that foreign participation in Nigeria’s equities market rose to 29 per cent as of May 2025, up from 20 per cent in the same period of 2024.

However, foreign outflows continued to outpace inflows, indicating lingering investor caution. Looking ahead, CSL warned that FX inflows could remain under pressure in the second half of the year, thereby limiting the scope for further appreciation of the naira.

The investment firm also projected that the CBN may begin cutting interest rates by 100 to 150 basis points in the fourth quarter of the year, as inflationary pressures ease. While such a move could stimulate economic activity, it may also weaken the naira by reducing the appeal of naira-denominated assets to foreign investors.

CSL further warned that a more accommodative monetary stance could narrow the carry trade margins that typically attract capital inflows. Nonetheless, the report noted that recent upgrades to Nigeria’s sovereign credit ratings and ongoing discussions around the country’s re-entry into the JP Morgan Emerging Market Bond Index and the MSCI Frontier Markets Index could boost investor confidence and support FX inflows in the months ahead.

Using a blend of valuation models, including Purchasing Power Parity, Real Effective Exchange Rate, and Interest Rate Parity, CSL estimated the fair value of the naira at N1,647/$ — slightly lower than its previous estimate of N1,687/$.

However, it stressed that these models are more appropriate for long-term assessments. The report added, “We believe that the central bank will remain committed to defending the Naira, which could allow the exchange rate trade between the N1,500-N1,600/US$ band in the second half of the year.

“However, without a material improvement in FX inflows, either through stronger oil revenues, renewed FDI and FPI momentum, or access to external financing, the sustainability of the defence strategy could come under increased scrutiny in the next six to twelve months.”

Beyond the currency markets, the report offered a mixed outlook for the broader economy. Real Gross Domestic Product growth for 2025 was revised down to 3.7 per cent from an earlier estimate of 3.9 per cent, with consumer spending and net exports identified as key drags.

Inflation is expected to average 22.9 per cent, significantly lower than the 31.4 per cent recorded in 2024, aided by improved exchange rate stability and base-year effects. On the fiscal front, CSL projected that the 2025 budget deficit could widen to 5.8 per cent of GDP — well above the official forecast of 3.9 per cent — on the back of revenue shortfalls from both oil and non-oil sources.

The firm anticipates increased domestic borrowing by the government in the second half of the year to fill the gap, which could further strain public finances.

In a related development, The PUNCH observed that Nigeria’s gross external reserves fell by $3.67bn in the first half of 2025, according to data obtained from the Central Bank of Nigeria. Figures indicate that the reserves, which stood at $40.88bn as of January 2025, declined to $37.21bn by the end of June.

This represents a significant reversal compared to the same period in 2024, when reserves rose from $33.02bn in January to $34.19bn in June, marking an increase of $1.17bn. The reserve drawdown in 2025 may be linked to increased foreign exchange demand, persistent pressures from external debt repayments, and a possible shortfall in expected inflows from oil sales and remittances.

Analysts believe the sharp decline could also reflect the CBN’s interventions in the foreign exchange market to stabilise the naira. Reacting to the report, Lagos-based economist, Mr Adewale Abimbola, explained that Nigeria currently operates a managed float exchange rate regime, where market forces largely determine the exchange rate, but with room for regulatory intervention to prevent excessive volatility.

“Well, we practised a managed float exchange rate system, where the naira is allowed to oscillate against the dollar but with regular intervention to ensure stability,” he said.

“CBN’s regular intervention in the FX market has in no small measure provided stability. In the absence of CBN intervention, I think we would have seen much more volatility in the naira. Although FX inflows have improved lately, even as FX demand has dropped (owing to domestic refining).”

On whether the naira can survive without the CBN’s support, Abimbola said Nigeria is not there yet. “Can the naira survive in the absence of CBN intervention? I think we are not there yet. Much more needs to be done to boost non-oil sources of FX inflows. We need to scale value addition in our manufacturing and agricultural exports. But for now, I would say CBN intervention is still needed for stability.”

The PUNCH earlier reported that the naira extended its recent gains on Monday, strengthening to a four-month high against the US dollar to close at 1518/$ on the official market, the Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market.

Data from the Central Bank of Nigeria revealed that the naira gained 0.74 per cent to close at 1518/$ on Monday. This marks the naira’s strongest performance since March 14, 2025, and the first time it traded below N1520/$ since that period, signalling a wave of positive momentum for the nation’s currency.

Analysts at Anchoria Limited in its market update have projected that the naira would trade within a stable range of 1515–1535/$ this week. Pegging their projection on improved FX liquidity and renewed CBN intervention, including last week’s $50m sale and a successful OMO auction that attracted foreign investor interest.

“These actions have helped ease demand pressures and boost market confidence, keeping volatility low,” Anchoria Limited said in a note.

Also, Cowry Assets Management Limited, in its weekly market report, also projected a positive and stable outing for the naira this week, anchored on continued “CBN intervention, FX reforms gaining traction, and steady oil export revenues; the groundwork is gradually being laid for currency recovery and improved market sentiment.”

Also reacting, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Arthur Stevens Asset Management Limited, Mr Olatunde Amolegbe, said the FX regime under Governor Yemi Cardoso was fundamentally different from what was practised during the tenure of Godwin Emefiele.

He added that the scale of current interventions is an indication that the market is more functional than before. “Although people call it intervention, what I see whenever the CBN participates in the foreign exchange markets is that it is playing one of its primary roles, which is price stability,” he said.

…Promises to drastically reduce fuel price, eradicate hunger

By Demola Akinyemi

Ilorin—The Interim National Publicity Secretary of African Democratic Congress, ADC, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, has asked the electorate to rally round it to win the 2027 general elections, assuring that prices of petroleum products would be drastically reduced, while the harsh hunger currently biting would be banished from the country.

Abdullahi, who was Minister of Youth and Sports Development, said this in an interview with journalists in Ilorin yesterday.

He said: “The most important thing is that our job is half done with the current hunger in the land. The major task we have is to convince Nigerians that we are the alternative.

“What is clear is that Nigerians don’t want APC anymore. Any Nigerian who is suffering today knows that they don’t want APC anymore. We must convince Nigerians that we represent the alternative.

“So a hungry person knows he doesn’t want to continue to be hungry. A person who can’t afford to pay hospital bills knows that he doesn’t want to continue. So, we don’t have any problems convincing Nigerians that they are suffering.

“We only have a challenge convincing Nigerians that we are different and that we are going to represent the alternative “

On the emergence of ADC, he said: “Why we created ADC was that this current administration has increased the suffering of Nigerians as a result of its catastrophic policies and how they increased fuel price, the vulcanizer that needs fuel for his tyre pumping machine knows how much effect it is having on him now.

Parents sending their children to school know how much they give their children to school to eat. N5,000 now is not up to the N500 before the APC came on board. And they caused everything.

“With the current hunger in the land, they know that Nigerians don’t want them again. What did they do? They saw that the opposition parties that can stand against them in 2027 must be scattered because they won’t be able to stand against them.

“Nigerians are no more interested in them anymore, and want to vote for another party. Look at the way they scattered other parties, including PDP, SDP, ANPP, LP. They ruptured them all.

“This step they took was what made dignified politicians come together to create ADC. We mustn’t let those people who have turned the country into chaos continue to ruin Nigeria; that was why we went to ADC.”

On what Nigerians should expect from ADC, he said: “What we can do to earn the people’s trust is we will first eradicate hunger from the nation. I had tasted hunger before, so I know what it feels like to be starved. That being said, this party will first eradicate hunger in the nation.

“Second, fuel price will be drastically reduced. With the fuel price now, one cannot make profit in business.Thirdly, we will tackle insecurity in the nation.

“Kwara State was one of the most peaceful states back then but now, Patigi, Ifelodun, Babanla are now full of kidnappers and bandits. I have a farm in that area, it’s not safe for me to go there right now because of bandits.

“So all these are what is of utmost priorities to us to tackle. In this party, we have politicians from PDP, SDP, NNPP, LP. By God’s grace, we are so focused on returning peace and comfortability back to Nigeria.”

PoliticsWhy I Support ADC’s Coalition But Remain In PDP — Lamido by ogododo(op): 11:04am On Jul 15, 2025
Former Jigawa State governor, Alhaji Sule Lamido, has said while his support for the Senator David Mark-led adopted party, African Democratic Congress, ADC, remained, his loyalty to Peoples Democratic Party PDP, was unquestionable.

This came on a day African Democratic Congress, ADC, accused the All Progressives Congress, APC, and the federal government of hypocrisy over their sudden display of grief, following the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

Lamido spoke to a crowd of his loyalists at an empowerment event organised by Senator Mustapha Khabeeb (PDP, Jigawa South West), in Dutse, the Jigawa State capital, over the weekend.

The former governor, who is one of the founding fathers of the PDP, said the coalition of opposition parties was put together to salvage Nigerians from the misrule of the ruling All Progressives Congress in order to rebuild Nigeria.

Lamido said: “Yes, I support the coming together of the opposition under the ADC, but let it be known I will never leave the PDP. I built this house with my sweat and soul. My role now is to offer guidance and ensure Nigeria finds her way back.”

He blasted the APC-led administration at both the state and federal levels for failing the people in every sphere of governance.

“The three PDP federal lawmakers from Jigawa are serving the people. APC lawmakers? They’re serving only themselves. Let the people judge.” He declared.

In a symbolic gesture to signal unity among opposition parties in the state, Lamido introduced Kabiru Hussaini, the state ADC chairman to the PDP crowd.

Senator Mustapha Khabeeb, the host of the event, echoed Lamido’s sentiments, reminding the audience of the PDP’s legacy of progress, especially during Lamido’s time as governor.

He said: “From 1999 to 2015, and especially under Sule Lamido, Jigawa knew what development looked like—roads, schools, hospitals, real change. What do we have now? APC has brought nothing but hunger and hopelessness.”

Khabeeb equally showcased his efforts to continue the PDP legacy through massive empowerment drives.

According to him, this year alone, over 3,000 people were lifted by distribution of equipment, including 600 irrigation machines,100 solar-powered irrigation units,100 paddy rice threshers, sewing and grinding machines and 750 sprayers and 3,000 litres of herbicide

“We’re not waiting for miracles, we’re working. Just like we did last year, and in 2023, we’re lifting our people out of poverty one tool, one machine at a time.

“Compare for yourself—under PDP and Lamido, there was progress. Under APC? Na talauci kawai suka kawo (they only brought poverty),’’ the lawmaker said.

The rally ended with chants of PDP solidarity, as supporters vowed to defend the party’s legacy and prepare for what many are calling a grand opposition comeback in 2027.

APC now mourns Buhari after blaming him for failures—ADC

Meanwhile, African Democratic Congress, ADC, has accused APC and the federal government of hypocrisy over their sudden display of grief, following the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

The ADC said the ruling party, which had spent the last two years blaming Buhari for Nigeria’s challenges, was now seeking to portray itself as the chief mourner.

In a statement signed by Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC’s Interim National Publicity Secretary and spokesperson for the opposition coalition, the party reaffirmed its declaration of a three-day mourning period across all its chapters and structures, beginning today.

‘’During this period, the ADC will suspend all political activities and public statements in honour of Buhari’s contributions to the country.

“Regardless of political affiliations, what cannot be denied is that President Buhari served this country with a fierce sense of duty, personal discipline, and conviction,” the statement read.

The party also highlighted Buhari’s popularity among ordinary Nigerians, especially the poor, who, it said, ‘stuck with him throughout his political sojourn and thereafter.’

However, the ADC expressed disappointment over what it called APC’s sudden shift in tone, saying “we note with regrets that his own political party and the government, which had done everything in the last two years to tarnish his records, dismantle his legacies, and blame him for every one of their failings, are now posturing as the chief mourners at his burial.’’

The party described this behaviour as ‘sheer hypocrisy’ and a ‘brazen move to harvest political gains from a national tragedy.’

It further urged Buhari’s family and loyalists to be cautious of what it called political opportunism during this mourning period, and encouraged Nigerians to reflect on Buhari’s enduring qualities.

“Let his memory be a mirror that reflects the personal ethics we must continue to demand from leadership for generations to come,” Abdullahi added.

Security has been beefed up at the residence of late President Muhammadu Buhari in Daura, his hometown in Katsina State.

This just as the body of the late President is being expected to be flown in from London.

President Bola Tinubu, who will personally receive the body at Umaru Musa Yar’adua Airport in Katsina, had earlier asked Vice-President Kashim Shettima and Femi Gbajabiamila, his Chief of Staff, to proceed to the UK to accompany the body home.

When Daily Trust visited Buhari’s Daura’s residence, on Tuesday, officials of the Department of State Services (DSS) and men of the Nigerian Army were seen stationed at the entrance.

While policemen and men of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) were positioned at strategic places.

A source who walked out of the compound confirmed to Daily Trust that the digging of grave had commenced.

Earlier, Daily Trust gathered that a portion of the late leader’s residence had been marked for his interment.

A source, who declined to mention his name, said the portion where the grave would be dug would be fenced.

According to Garba Shehu, spokesman of the former president, the body of the late President is expected to arrive between 11am and 12pm Tuesday.

However, he said, the venue of the funeral prayer would be decided by the state government.

PoliticsBuhari In His Own Words: A Presidency Through Quotes by ogododo(op): 6:42pm On Jul 13, 2025
Few Nigerian leaders have left behind quotes as memorable—or as debated—as the late Muhammadu Buhari.

From his tough stance on corruption to controversial remarks on gender roles and youth, Buhari’s words often captured both his vision and the contradictions of his presidency. Below is an analysis of some of his most famous quotes and the national conversations they sparked.

“I belong to everybody and I belong to nobody”
— Inaugural Address, May 29, 2015

This was Buhari’s most quoted line, delivered during his swearing-in ceremony after defeating an incumbent president. It was a bold statement of independence, interpreted as his promise to govern above partisan or sectional interest. It reassured Nigerians weary of political patronage and nepotism. However, over time, critics challenged the sincerity of the statement, pointing to lopsided appointments and regional bias. Yet, the line endures as Buhari’s clearest declaration of intent to unify and be impartial—even if the implementation fell short of expectation.

“If we don’t kill corruption, corruption will kill Nigeria”
— Anti-Corruption Summit, 2016

This phrase came to define Buhari’s central agenda. As a former military head of state with a reputation for discipline, Buhari rode into office on a wave of anti-corruption sentiment. This quote framed corruption not as a vice but as an existential threat to Nigeria’s survival. It resonated with a public frustrated by years of mismanagement. While some high-profile arrests and asset recoveries occurred, many argue that the anti-corruption war was selective and slow-moving. Still, this quote captured the urgency Buhari sought to bring to governance.

“Technically, we have won the war against Boko Haram”
— Media interview, December 2015

Just months into his presidency, Buhari declared that Boko Haram had been “technically defeated.” At the time, major towns in the North-East had been liberated from insurgent control, but suicide bombings and ambushes continued. Critics called the claim premature and insensitive to ongoing casualties. This quote is now remembered as an example of political optimism colliding with harsh security realities. While territorial gains were made, insecurity evolved in other forms—banditry, herder-farmer clashes, and kidnappings—denting Buhari’s security legacy.

“My wife belongs in my kitchen, my living room, and the other room”
— Press conference in Germany, 2016

Arguably Buhari’s most controversial quote, this comment was made in response to criticism from his wife, Aisha Buhari, who had publicly questioned his leadership and those around him. Delivered in front of German Chancellor Angela Merkel, the quote triggered national and international backlash. Feminists, rights groups, and even political allies condemned it as outdated and demeaning. It highlighted a traditionalist worldview at odds with modern gender expectations—and damaged Buhari’s reputation among progressive voters.

“Nigerian youths want to sit and do nothing”
— Commonwealth Business Forum, London, April 2018

This quote, paraphrased from Buhari’s remarks about youth entitlement and joblessness, sparked the viral #LazyNigerianYouths trend. Many young Nigerians, especially online, saw it as dismissive of their struggles in a tough economic climate. While Buhari may have been speaking to concerns over unemployability and skill gaps, the tone was widely seen as unsympathetic. The quote exposed a generational disconnect between leadership and the youthful majority, becoming a rallying cry for political awareness among young Nigerians.

______________

“You will be able to go to bed knowing you are safe”
— Inaugural speech, 2015

This promise, rooted in security and law enforcement reform, reflected the president’s military background and intent to restore order. However, with increasing reports of violence, farmer-herder clashes, banditry, and police abuses under SARS, many Nigerians felt less safe than ever. The #EndSARS protests of 2020 revealed the gap between this vision and the lived reality of many citizens. Buhari’s failure to stem violence or reform security agencies casts a shadow over this hopeful commitment.

Conclusion: Words That Echo, Promises That Divide

From hope-filled declarations to infamous gaffes, Buhari’s presidency was punctuated by quotes that revealed both his aspirations and limitations. While some words inspired a new political direction, others undermined public trust. As Nigeria reflects on the Buhari years, his quotes serve not just as slogans—but as milestones in a presidency defined as much by rhetoric as by results.

PoliticsSheikh Murtadho Muhammad Kidnapped In Edo, ₦30M Ransom Demanded by ogododo(op): 5:06pm On Jul 13, 2025
The Chief Imam of Uromi and President of the Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria, Edo-Delta Chapter, Sheikh Murtadho Muhammad, has reportedly been kidnapped by unknown gunmen.

The incident occurred at about 2 p.m. on Sunday at the Angle 90 area of Uromi, in Esan North-East Local Government Area of Edo

Eyewitnesses said the Islamic cleric was abducted shortly after observing one of the daily prayers.

He had reportedly stepped out to buy food for his family when he was forcefully taken away near his residence.

Confirming the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria, the Chairman of the Edo State chapter of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, Alhaji Abdulazeez Igbinidu, described the act as inglorious and unacceptable.

He strongly condemned the abduction and called for the immediate and unconditional release of the Islamic leader.

“I am hearing that they are asking for a very big amount of money and we don’t have such.

“Even if you have, if you do such a thing, you are encouraging them,” he said.

The chairman called on the Edo government to measure up and do everything possible to protect the ordinary citizens in the state.

“They are the ones that have the apparatus for security.

“So they should do everything possible to ensure that Imam is released unconditionally and without harm.

“Government should also put up all efforts to ensure that the citizens are able to sleep well with their two eyes closed and work freely without fear of kidnapping or assassination,” he said.

A family source told NAN that the suspected kidnappers had since reached out, demanding a ransom of N30 million.

The incident has sparked widespread concern among the Muslim community in the state, considering the abductee’s dual role as both a revered religious leader and an advocate for youth development.

All efforts to get the confirmation of the Police Command in Edo yielded no result as its spokesperson, CSP Moses Yamu neither picked up calls nor replied to a text message.

Atiku Condemns Tinubu’s Tyranny Against Workers, Demands Release Of Labour Leader Emelieze

July 13, 2025
News
Atiku noted the delay in concluding the wage negotiation process and the backlog of payments still owed to federal workers.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has called for the immediate and unconditional release of the Coordinator of the Federal Workers Forum, Andrew Emelieze, who is currently in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).

In a personally signed statement, Atiku criticised President Bola Tinubu’s handling of Nigeria’s economic and labour issues, linking Emelieze's arrest to the government’s alleged failure to meet its commitments to workers.

"When President Bola Ahmed Tinubu hastily and thoughtlessly removed fuel subsidy on the day of his inauguration, he triggered an economic avalanche that has since buried the average Nigerian under the weight of inflation, hunger, and despair," Atiku said.

He further explained that the Tinubu administration had promised a temporary wage award to federal civil servants to cushion the impact of subsidy removal while negotiations continued on a new national minimum wage.

"In a bid to manage the self-inflicted crisis, the administration promised to pay a wage award to federal civil servants as a temporary cushion pending the conclusion of negotiations on a new national minimum wage," he stated.

"That promise, like many others under this government, has become a broken covenant."

Atiku noted the delay in concluding the wage negotiation process and the backlog of payments still owed to federal workers.

"It took the Tinubu administration a staggering 10 months to arrive at a new minimum wage figure," he said. "By implication, the Federal Government owes 10 months of wage award arrears to federal workers."

According to him, only six months' worth of wage awards have been paid, despite repeated assurances.

"Yet, only six months have been paid and that too after a series of unfulfilled assurances and avoidable delays. As of today, the Federal Government owes four months of wage awards, amounting to ₦35,000 monthly, a total of ₦140,000 per worker," he said.

The former vice president accused the federal government of showing "callous indifference" to workers’ welfare, contrasting it with what he described as better handling of labor issues by some state governments.

"While several state governments have shown commendable responsibility in the management of labour affairs, the Tinubu-led Federal Government has distinguished itself by its callous indifference and utter disdain for workers’ welfare," he said.

Jul 04, 2025

Atiku condemned the arrest of Emelieze, describing it as a descent into tyranny.

"To make matters worse, instead of engaging in dialogue or fulfilling its promises, the government has now resorted to tyranny and suppression of free speech," he said.

"Nearly two weeks ago, Comrade Andrew Uche Emelieze was arrested and detained for attempting to organise a peaceful protest to demand the payment of the overdue wage awards."

"His only 'crime' was speaking up for workers abandoned by the state."

Demanding Emelieze’s release, Atiku warned that the continued detention of labour activists sends a dangerous signal.

"We demand the immediate and unconditional release of Comrade Emelieze. His continued detention is an affront to democracy, a slap in the face of every Nigerian worker, and a chilling reminder of the authoritarian drift of the Tinubu administration," he said.

He concluded with a strong message of solidarity to Nigerian workers, saying, "Let it be known: Nigerian workers will not be silenced, intimidated, or forgotten. The economic hardship is real, the hunger is biting, and the government has a duty to act, not repress."

SaharaReporters earlier reported that the FWF announced that it would hold a protest on July 14 to demand the payment of four months’ outstanding wages.

The group will use the protest to also call for a living wage, stating that “N70,000 is not enough to cater for the needs of workers.”

Additionally, the forum is demanding the “unconditional release of its Coordinator, Comrade Andrew Emelieze, by officials of the Department of State Services, Oyo State.”

PoliticsNNPC May Sell Refineries, Says CEO by ogododo(op): 4:22pm On Jul 11, 2025
Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, Bayo Ojulari, said the company is considering selling some of its refineries as it grapples with challenges in their rehabilitation.

Speaking in an interview with Bloomberg on Thursday at the 9th OPEC International Seminar in Vienna, Austria, Ojulari said a strategic review of NNPC’s refinery operations is underway and expected to be concluded before the end of the year.

He said, “So we’re reviewing all our refinery strategies now. We hope before the end of the year, we’ll be able to conclude that review. That review may lead to us doing things slightly differently.”

When asked if that could include putting the refineries up for sale, Ojulari said, “But what we’re saying is that sale is not out of the question.

“All the options are on the table, to be frank, but that decision will be based on the outcome of the reviews we’re doing now.”

Nigeria has been working to rehabilitate its long-dormant state-owned refineries, including those in Port Harcourt, Warri and Kaduna.

Although the Port Harcourt refinery resumed operations briefly in November 2023, it was shut down again in May for maintenance.

Ojulari attributed some of the setbacks to outdated infrastructure and underperforming technologies.

“So refineries, we made quite a lot of investment over the last several years and brought in a lot of technologies. We’ve been challenged.

“Some of those technologies have not worked as we expected so far. But also, as you know, when you’re refining a very old refinery that has been abandoned for some time, what we’re finding is that it’s becoming a little bit more complicated,” he said.

He also addressed the high cost of oil production in Nigeria, saying operating costs range between $25 and $30 per barrel, partly due to heavy spending on pipeline security.

“For the cost of crude production, there’s a capital cost and there are the operating costs,” he said. “The operating cost right now in Nigeria is hovering over $20 per barrel, which is quite high.

“Part of that is because of the investment we’ve had to make in terms of security of our pipelines, which, as you know, today we have 100 per cent availability of our pipelines. That came out of significant investment.

“So we believe with time, with stability, that cost will start going down, but for now it’s somewhere between $25 and $30 a barrel,” he said.

Despite the challenges, Ojulari said the NNPC is targeting an increase in Nigeria’s oil output to 1.9 million barrels per day by the end of the year.
