PoliticsFormer Environment Minister, Abdullahi Under Buhari Resigns From APC In Nasarawa by ogododo(op): 6:21pm On Jun 01, 2025
Barrister Abdullahi, who served under President Muhammadu Buhari, submitted his resignation letter on June 1 to the APC chairman in his Uke ward of Karu Local Government Area in Nasarawa State. The letter, which was also copied to other party officials, cited personal reasons for his departure.

Close to the former minister, Mr. Samuel Akala, confirmed the decision to reporters in Lafia and suggested that Abdullahi may announce a new party affiliation soon, with a view to contesting for the governorship of Nasarawa State in 2027.

In his letter, Abdullahi expressed gratitude for the opportunities and support received during his tenure with the APC. “I wish you and the party good luck,” the letter stated.

Abdullahi has a notable track record in the state, having previously served as Secretary to the State Government under former Governor Tanko Almakura, where he contributed significantly to state development.

His resignation has raised concerns within the state party, given his previous influence and substantial followership.

PoliticsNine Feared Dead, Several Injured As Bomb Explodes At Borno Bus Stop by ogododo(op): 2:27pm On Jun 01, 2025
Nine people have been feared dead following a bomb explosion at a local bus stop in Mairari village, Guzamala Local Government Area of Borno State.

It was gathered that the deadly blast was caused by an improvised explosive device (IED) planted at a bus stop.

The explosion occurred around 11 a.m. on Saturday, and many people were reportedly injured.

The PUNCH reports that the Speaker of the Borno State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Abdulkarim Lawan, has confirmed that nine people were killed By IEDs planted by terrorists at a local bus stop in Mairari village, Guzamala Local Government Area.

“It is unfortunate that nine of my resilient constituents were killed by planted IEDs while waiting to board vehicles at a local bus stop in Mairari village,” Lawan said.

“May Allah grant their souls Aljanatul Firdaus. I also pray for the swift recovery of those currently receiving treatment in hospitals in Monguno and Maiduguri.”

The Speaker lamented the continued attacks on the region, noting that Mairari village had previously been resettled twice with full civil authority, making it unique in Guzamala Local Government Area, but had again been deserted due to renewed Boko Haram and ISWAP activities.

He explained that many displaced residents currently taking refuge in Monguno, Guzamala, and Maiduguri frequently return to Mairari to farm.

“Unfortunately, terrorists monitoring their movements planted IEDs at the local bus stop, which exploded while they were waiting to board commercial vehicles back to their destinations,” he narrated.

Lawan extended his condolences to the families of the deceased and those injured in the blast.

He also appealed to the military and other security agencies to intensify efforts to restore security in Guzamala—particularly in Gudumbali, the council headquarters, and Mairari village—areas which have long remained under the control of Boko Haram without any civil authority.

When SaharaReporters reached out to Nahum Daso, the spokesperson for the Borno State Police Command, he initially answered the call but did not speak. Subsequent calls went unanswered, and he did not reply to a text message sent to him.

On May 29, 2025, SaharaReporters reported a deadly ambush in the Marte area of Borno State, where nine members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) lost their lives following an intense overnight battle with suspected Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) or Boko Haram insurgents.

According to a situation report from Counter-Terrorism Unit (CTU) Base 8, the attack occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, May 27, 2025, around 1:10 am. Heavily armed insurgents launched an assault on CJTF positions in Marte, sparking a fierce gunfight.

The CJTF, a volunteer security group that supports the Nigerian military in the ongoing counter-insurgency operations in the North-East, engaged the insurgents in a prolonged battle. Despite being outnumbered and under intense fire, the CJTF managed to repel the attackers, inflicting significant casualties and forcing them to retreat.Nigerian cultural tours

Tragically, as the CJTF members attempted to recover the body of one of their fallen comrades, they triggered an improvised explosive device (IED) planted by the retreating insurgents. The resulting blast killed nine CJTF members instantly.

The report also confirmed that several civilians captured by the insurgents during the attack were later brutally executed before the terrorists fled the area.

“They planted IED and CJTF who went to recovered one of their deceased body on their way back to their camp stepped on the IED and nine of the CJTF died X few civilians who were captured in the community by BHTS were gruesomely slaughtered,” the situation report said.

PoliticsUNICEF: Nigeria Beats War-ridden Sudan To Emerge Capital Of Malnourished Childre by ogododo(op): 8:58am On Jun 01, 2025
The United Nations Children’s Fund on Monday said Nigeria has beaten the war-torn Sudan to emerge as the capital of malnourished children on the African continent and the second highest in the world.

The UNICEF chief nutrition section, Nemat Hajeebhoy, who disclosed this during a media briefing on the 2025 lean season multisectoral response organised by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, said 600,000 children in the country suffer from acute malnutrition.

“Nigeria has the highest number of malnourished children in Africa and the second in the world,” Ms Hajeebhoy said.

She noted that half of these children are on the brink of developing severe acute malnutrition, making them vulnerable to death.

Serigne Loum, a World Food Programme official, also mentioned that Nigeria had the most food-insecure people in Africa.

This damning revelation came amid OCHA’s appeal for funding to tackle the recurrent food and nutrition crisis in the North-East states.

Trond Jensen, OCHA head of office, said the UN agency required a combined $300 million to adequately address the crisis, noting that $160 million of the fund is necessary to tackle crises related to food insecurity, nutrition, water, and sanitation.

Mr Jensen said, “This is the absolute bare minimum that we are needing. Of course it’s a paradox and a dilemma that we are facing that whereas the need when it comes to severe acute malnutrition has doubled in the year, our ability to address those needs in some instances has halved.”

Mr Jensen, while appealing to state governments and international organisations to contribute to the response, said the agency was targeting two million people as far as the crises were concerned.

Last year, the Global Hunger Index listed Sudan as the country most hit by poverty, followed by Burundi, Somalia and Yemen.

Meanwhile, the World Bank’s Africa’s Pulse report of April 2025 showed that Nigeria accounts for 19 per cent of extremely poor people in Sub-Saharan Africa, while the Democratic Republic of Congo has 14 per cent, Ethiopia nine per cent, and Sudan six per cent.

The World Bank also predicted a grim future for Nigeria, stating that more Nigerians will be plunged into poverty by 2027.

Holistic action on security to boost food production —Rev. Ugolor, ANEEJ executive director

“To a large extent, President Tinubu has shown that he knows what he is doing in the last two years. In terms of policy, we are unable to lay our hands on his policy on agriculture which is the mainstay of the economy of this country. But herdsmen have taken over all the farmlands and this is impacting negatively. He has not come out with a national response to this. There is also the issue of corruption that he must tackle. The East-West Road is still incomplete. Moving smoothly from Benin to Calabar is difficult and is hampering development in the region. In terms of the international anti-corruption campaign to return assets to Nigeria, the Minister of Justice is doing well. Nigeria remains on top globally in asset restitution. He must, however, amend the laws about the return of criminal proceeds to establish a centralized system for overseeing our resources and allocating the proceeds to our populace.”

Govt should fix problem of insecurity — Osas Fred, Warri resident

“The government should fix the problem of insecurity, as it has affected the prices of food items. I am in my 40s now; I have never seen the government as bad as this. It’s as if we have no government in charge of the country. Parents can’t afford to send three children to school at the same time. Salaries are so poor that even the minimum wage from the government is miserable”.

Nigerians have examined their condition in the last two years of President Bola Tinubu’s administration and concluded that they were not better off than they were before President Tinubu assumed office on May 29 2023.

Many residents said under the Tinubu administration, the average person has experienced more poverty and insecurity than under any other government in the nation. Some, however, said the president has done his best and identified areas in which he needs to do more.

Daily survival increasingly difficult for Nigerians — Prof Okaba, INC president

Prof. Benjamin Okaba, the president of the Ijaw National Congress (INC), stated that although Tinubu came to power with audacious pledges and reforms, particularly the elimination of fuel subsidies and attempts to standardize exchange rates, these have caused a great deal of hardship for a large number of Nigerians. According to him, “The naira’s depreciation, spiraling inflation, and high energy and food costs have eroded the purchasing power of the average Nigerian citizen. While the government argues these are necessary sacrifices for long-term gain, for millions of Nigerians, daily survival has become increasingly difficult. While some progress has been reported in counterinsurgency efforts in the Northeast, a plethora of incidents of widespread banditry, kidnapping, community clashes, and tribal invasions accompanied by large-scale death tolls have ravaged the North-Central. The judicial and legislative reforms promised are still unfounded, and the impact of their activities on governance and the rule of law is abysmal”.

We pass through hell daily —Dr. Theophilus, IYC president

The president of the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC), Dr. Alaye Theophilus, described President Tinubu’s two years as very disappointing. He said, “all the policies of the Tinubu government are anti-people, and what we are exposed to daily is threat upon threat by a government that behaves like a military junta. The president should use the remaining two years in his first term to correct the wrongs of the past two years, particularly for the people of the Niger Delta, who voted for him massively in 2023.

We expected him, as a democrat, to be better than this. People are passing through hell daily, and this government keeps making promises without any idea of how to fulfill those promises”.

Everything gone from bad to worse —Adima, political activist

A political activist, Mr. Blessing Adima, said, “Everything has gone from bad to worse. As far as the APC government is concerned, they didn’t come to do anything; there is no area of the country that they have done well. Let us not be fooled by local government financial autonomy, the governors are still handling the funds of local governments and the local government’s financial autonomy has not bettered the lives of the people at the grassroots. They should reverse most of the decisions they have taken. They have borrowed more money than before despite the removal of the fuel subsidy. How come a government that paid subsidies didn’t borrow this much? Insecurity is worse, terrorists have taken over Benue, Plateau, and Taraba States. The president should employ the services of mercenaries who can dismantle those terrorists so that farmers can go back to their farms. He should reverse the draconian economic policies that are not working.”

Tinubu has failed Nigerians — Otumara

Henry Otumara said, “Comparatively, former President Jonathan’s government is far better than his successor, ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, and the current President Bola Tinubu. Tinubu has failed Nigerians in the last two years. He should fix the power sector. The electricity bill has gone up, yet there is no light; we don’t see what we pay for. This government appears to be defrauding its citizens in a way. After all, power is a public service rendered by the government, so it should not be beyond the reach of many Nigerians.”

There is hunger in the land —Akpan

Pioneer president of Future Journalism and Media Studies, Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic, Ikot Osurua, Mark Akpan, stated, “I expect Tinubu’s government to improve the standard of living and focus on massive youth empowerment in the remaining two years. They should look critically into the agricultural sector because the major issue Nigerian citizens are facing today is hunger. Most families can’t afford two meals a day. Some even struggle to have one meal a day”.

Tough and deteriorating economic conditions — Omare, ex-IYC president

Eric Omare, former president of the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC), said, “It is difficult to say whether Nigerians are better off in terms of economic condition or not. This is mainly because the current government has introduced some tough economic policies that have made a significant impact on the lives of Nigerians. Though the removal of fuel subsidy is necessary in the circumstances, it has made living conditions tough for Nigerians. Therefore, I would say that Nigerians are passing through difficult and worsening economic conditions.

I hope that things will improve as promised by the government. Government should introduce deliberate policies to cushion the effects of the economic policies on the people. The key focus of the policies should be to enable Nigerians to afford the necessities of life without too much stress”.

Where is the gain from subsidy removal going to? —Regina, civil servant

Regina, a civil servant, said, “I had thought that gains from the removal of the subsidy would be ploughed into roads, but this is not so. The rain is here, and as usual, the Warri-Sapele road in Delta State will be another hectic problem for travelers because of the deplorable state. It’s like the federal government has abdicated its responsibilities to state governments. We are not seeing the federal government’s impact in Delta State and several other states. The federal roads are so bad. Where is the gain from subsidy removal going to?”

It is a mixed bag —Elder Ambakederimo

Elder Joseph Ambakederimo, convener of the South-South Reawakening Group, said, “It is a mixed bag if we must fairly assess the two years of the Tinubu presidency. The policies formulated so far are far-reaching, while others can’t find any pathway forward. The reforms are excruciating, but we are also seeing a silver lining on the horizon in terms of increased revenue flowing into the coffers of the three tiers of government. But what is of concern is the non-commensurate infrastructure development across the country compared to the huge amount of money received from the FAAC account, specifically the states. When we say there is hunger in the land, the question to ask is what the states are doing with the huge revenue they receive monthly. The states should drive agriculture and produce food for their people, not the federal government, which deals with policy. The assessment has to be somewhat interwoven. However, the president should, in the next two years, focus more on how to ensure that the funds flowing in get to the people, because as of now, that is not seen to be happening.”

PoliticsWhy The Anti-tinubu Coalition Isn’t Coalescing By Farooq A. Kperogi by ogododo(op): 10:02am On May 31, 2025
By Farooq A. Kperogi

There is supposed to be a formidable coalition of powerful regional and national political forces working to upstage President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027. But this coalition isn’t coalescing and appears to be crumbling before it has even had a chance to be formed. Three major reasons account for this.

The first reason is what I call the aspirational collision of the major movers of the coalition. By that, I mean the two major power blocs behind the coalition have irreconcilably divergent ideas about who should occupy the upper end of the ticket the coalition will produce.

PDP’s Atiku Abubakar basically wants a recreation of the 2019 electoral lineup. He would be the presidential candidate, and Labor Party’s Peter Obi would be the vice-presidential candidate. It is predicated on the assumption that Atiku Abubakar, by virtue of his primordial identity, will be a magnet for northern votes.

If he is the only prominent northern candidate in 2027, he will win both Muslim and Christian votes in the region, as northern Christians trust him more than any northern Muslim politician of his generation on account of his remarkable broadmindedness, though his close association with Nasir El-Rufai, widely regarded by many northern Christians as a crass, unremorseful Christophobe because of his past actions and utterances, undermines this appeal.

Peter Obi is supposed to bring the enthusiasm and votes he got from the 2023 presidential election to the coalition. However, it appears that although Peter Obi isn’t personally ill-disposed to being Atiku’s running mate again, his support base in the South would deplete considerably should he choose to play second fiddle to a northerner this time.

The dramatic rise in his political capital in 2023 was entirely the consequence of his being the only notable Southern Christian presidential candidate in the race. Plus, the prevalent sentiment in the South is that Muhammadu Buhari’s eight-year tenure was the North’s chance to rule. The next eight years from 2023 is the South’s turn.

If Obi were to accept being Atiku’s running mate, he would be seen by people in the South, including his native Southeast, as a betrayer, as a quisling, of the region. And that would mark the irretrievable diminution of his political capital.

Yet, it is unconstitutional for Atiku to be anybody’s running mate, having been a two-term vice president before. So, there is zero possibility of Atiku agreeing to be running mate to Obi, whom he brought to national limelight by choosing him as his running mate in 2019, against the recommendation of major players in the PDP at the time.

This is an unresolvable impasse. As much as the South justifiably thinks it is its turn to produce the president until 2031, the North has been unsuccessfully calling attention to the disadvantage it has suffered as a result of Umaru Musa Yar’Adua’s death, which prematurely returned power to the South for six years.

The Atiku group’s carrot to Obi—to accept being VP in exchange for Atiku serving only one term—is informed by this logic. It somehow compensates the North’s six-year loss and promises a return of power to the Southeast, which has never produced a president (or even a vice president) since the start of the Fourth Republic.

Nevertheless, if the chatter I see on social media is any guide, Obi’s support base is unpersuaded by this. Were Obi to accept being a running mate to Atiku in 2027, many Obi supporters say they would rather sit out the election or, worse, vote for Tinubu to ensure that the presidency remains in the South.

This is complicated by the reality that, were Atiku to stay out of the 2027 presidential contest and endorse Obi, it’s unlikely to improve Obi’s electoral fortunes in parts of the North that rejected him in 2023.

The second reason the coalition is unlikely to succeed is that key northern politicians who are already positioning themselves to be Tinubu’s successor in 2031 are either not part of it or are in it to undercut it from within. There are two reasons for this.

First, an Atiku presidency would mean their aspirations to be president would be deferred by more years than a Tinubu second term. Plus, even if Atiku honors his alleged pledge to serve for only one term (which is never a guarantee, given the intoxication of power), he would hand over power to the South. That counts them out.

Second, opposing Tinubu’s second term by joining a coalition would ensure that they take themselves out of consideration for Tinubu’s support in 2031. It is self-seeking political calculation that assumes the nature and form of the outlines of the future.

The third reason the coalition would have trouble taking off is Tinubu’s own determined, single-minded, well-oiled—even state-sanctioned—effort to destroy it. I’ll only talk about one effort because, while many people may be aware of it, only a few seem to be conscious of it.

Tinubu is deploying a political propaganda tactic called the bandwagon technique. This method encourages people to act or think a certain way because “everyone else is doing it.” It appeals to the human desire to be part of the majority or to avoid being left out.

It’s a powerful technique because it leverages social pressure and the fear of missing out (FOMO). The unceasing gale of political defections of prominent political actors across the country is intended to cause Tinubu’s opponents to question their judgement and give up their opposition to him.

Even Afrobeats music icon Davido—who won well-deserved plaudits and brownie points from Igbo people a few days ago for telling a Yoruba Twitter interlocutor who questioned his outward symbolic associations with Igbo that he is “Igbo by blood”—appears to be part of this bandwagon technique.

Video records of him visiting Tinubu in the Presidential Villa and introducing well-known Igbo entertainment figures as “APC members” fit the bandwagon method perfectly. Here’s a man whom the president’s media team had tackled vigorously for his criticism of Tinubu’s government, whose uncle is a PDP governor, and who publicly identifies with the Igbo (a core stronghold of opposition to Tinubu), now openly identifying with the president at the same time that major political players in opposition parties are switching to APC. That’s unlikely to be random.

When you add this to the predominant sentiment in Nigeria that incumbents don’t lose elections, even if they actually lose them (with the exception of Goodluck Jonathan), you are looking at a systematic, coordinated effort to construct the rhetoric of inevitability around Tinubu’s second term.

A coalition of politicians who don’t offer or promise anything different from Tinubu and who have irreconcilable asymmetries in their expectations of what the coalition should produce will have a hard time overcoming Tinubu’s strategies.

This is sad because, as I previously pointed out, the conditions in the country should preclude Tinubu from even being considered for a second term. A May 24, 2025, special report I read in Vanguard by Dr. Dele Sobowale titled “Tinubu at Midterm: Who are the People Gov’t is Satisfying?” was particularly striking.

Sobowale's Consultancy conducted a nationwide survey to assess public perception of the federal government's performance. The study involved a brief verbal questionnaire posed to Nigerians across all six geopolitical zones, cutting across age, ethnicity, religion, gender, and income levels.

Participants were asked two simple yes-or-no questions: whether their lives were better now compared to two years ago, and whether they expected things to improve in the next two years.

The findings were stark. Only 3 percent of respondents said their lives had improved, while an overwhelming 97 percent said they had not. Even more striking was the pessimism about the future: just 1 percent expressed hope for improvement in the next two years, while 99 percent did not.

These results reflect a deep sense of dissatisfaction and growing despair among the Nigerian populace. In a normal setting, no government that has enabled this much misery index and that is burdened by this heavy perceptual burden should even run for a second term. But this is Nigeria.

Six people were killed and 116 abducted on Tuesday when bandits attacked farmers in Danmuntari and other villages in Danko/Wasagu Local Government Area of Kebbi State.

The victims were planting guinea corn near the Kebbi-Zamfara border when the attack occurred around 9 am.

Those killed include Mudaha, Al’ameen Mohammed, Safwan Abubakar, Tanko Mohammed, Ibrahim Garba, and a woman, Inno Mudaha.

This is the fourth major attack in Danko/Wasagu this year. Just two weeks earlier, 15 farmers were killed in the Waje community.

Before that, other attacks left several dead and injured, despite a security presence involving the army, police tactical unit, and vigilantes.

A local vigilante, Ibrahim Shehu, said the bandits exploited the early farming season, knowing many would be on their farms.

Efforts to reach Danko/Wasagu LG chairman, Husseini Aliyu Bena, and Kebbi police spokesperson CSP Nafiu Abubakar were unsuccessful.

However, a local council source confirmed that the state government has ordered the provision of relief materials and that military operations are ongoing to rescue the abducted.

According to a situation report from Counter-Terrorism Unit (CTU) Base 8, the attack occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, May 27, 2025, at approximately 1:10 am, when heavily armed fighters suspected to be affiliated with ISWAP or Boko Haram launched an assault on CJTF positions in Marte.

Adeadly ambush has claimed the lives of nine members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) following a fierce overnight battle with suspected Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP)/Boko Haram insurgents in the Marte area of Borno State.

The CJTF, a volunteer security outfit assisting the Nigerian military in the ongoing counter-insurgency operations in the North-East, engaged the insurgents in a prolonged gunfight. Despite being outnumbered and under heavy fire, the CJTF successfully repelled the attackers, inflicting casualties and forcing them to retreat.Nigerian fashion

However, the situation took a tragic turn shortly after. As the CJTF attempted to recover the body of one of their fallen members, they unknowingly triggered an improvised explosive device (IED) planted by the retreating insurgents. The explosion killed nine CJTF members instantly.

In addition to the CJTF casualties, the report confirmed that several civilians who had been captured by the insurgents during the attack were later gruesomely executed before the terrorists fled the area.

“They planted IED and CJTF who went to recovered one of their deceased body on their way back to their camp stepped on the IED and nine of the CJTF died X few civilians who were captured in the community by BHTS were gruesomely slaughtered,” the situation report said.

Security forces are continuing to monitor the situation in Marte, and efforts are ongoing to clear any additional explosives and provide support to affected families.

The incident underscores the persistent threat posed by ISWAP/Boko Haram factions in the region and the significant sacrifices made by CJTF members in the fight against terrorism.

In a related development, he also asked the upper chamber to confirm the nomination of Kabir Sabo Kataka for the position of Executive Director in the corporation.

Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, read the President’s letter during plenary on Wednesday.

After reading the letter, Akpabio referred the request to the Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance, and Other Financial Institutions for further legislative work and to report back as soon as practicable.

The NDIC’s function is to protect depositors and guarantee the settlement of insured funds when a deposit-taking financial institution can no longer repay its deposits, thereby helping to maintain financial system stability.

For instance, during the saga of the Heritage Bank liquidation, the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) assured depositors at the bank that it was already in the process of refunding them.

During a press briefing, the then Managing Director of NDIC, Bello Hassan, had said the corporation would not take 30 days as stipulated by law but would settle customers within one week, while also outlining the repayment process.

The CBN had then revoked the licence of Heritage Bank over its inability to improve its financial performance.

“The Board and Management of the bank have not been able to improve the bank’s financial performance, a situation which constitutes a threat to financial stability,” the CBN had said.
