EducationNASS Threatens To Cut JAMB Funding Over N1billion Spent On Meals, Refreshments by ogododo(op): 4:50pm On Jan 13, 2025
The National Assembly Joint Committee on Finance has threatened to cut off the Federal Government’s grant to the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) in the 2025 budget proposal over excessive spending.

This decision was made after JAMB Registrar, Prof Ishaq Oloyede, presented the agency’s 2025 budget proposal to the Joint Committee of the Senate and House of Representatives.

According to Oloyede, JAMB remitted N4 billion to the Consolidated Revenue Fund in 2024 but received a grant of N6 billion from the Federal Government.

This sparked criticism from committee members, including Abiodun Faleke and Senator Adams Oshiomhole, who questioned why a self-funding agency like JAMB should receive government allocations.

Faleke asked, “Why not keep the N4 billion and stop government funding for JAMB?” Oshiomhole also slammed JAMB for its expenses, including N1.1 billion on meals and refreshments, N850 million on security and cleaning, and N600 million on local travels. He demanded justification for the N6.5 billion spent on local trainings, asking, “What did you fumigate? Is it mosquitoes that took all this money?”¹

“You remitted N4bn and got N6bn f on the Federal Government. Why not keep the N4bn and we stop. the government from funding JAMB,” the Chairman, House Committee on Finance, Faleke asked.

“You spent N1.1bn on meals and refreshment. Are you being freely fed by the government? What this means is that you are spending the money you generate from poor students, many of them orphans.

“You also spent N850m on security, cleaning and fumigation in 2024.What did you fumigate? Is it mosquitoes that took al this money? ” Oshiomhole asked

PoliticsPort Harcourt, Maiduguri, 6 Others Emerge Most Dangerous Areas In Nigeria by ogododo(op): 10:38am On Jan 13, 2025
The findings highlight major cities and highways prone to theft, attacks, and road hazards, offering critical insights into the country’s security challenges.

Areport by SB Morgen (SBM) Intelligence, a research firm, has identified Port Harcourt, Maiduguri, Lagos, Jos, Calabar, Kano, Eleme Junction in Rivers State, and Onitsha as the eight most dangerous areas for security threats in Nigeria.

The findings highlight major cities and highways prone to theft, attacks, and road hazards, offering critical insights into the country’s security challenges.

The report noted that Port Harcourt is the most perilous city, with 85 incidents reported, primarily involving violent crime such as armed robbery and kidnapping.

Maiduguri follows with 52 incidents, plagued by ongoing insurgent threats. Lagos recorded 32 incidents, with urban crime concentrated in high-density areas.

“The Makurdi-Jos route presents another troubling scenario, with a blend of youth gang violence and farmer-pastoral conflicts.

“These incidents often lead to roadblocks and attacks on motorists, highlighting systemic lapses in government security provisions,” the report stated.

Jos, Calabar, and Kano each registered between 18 and 23 incidents, with communal clashes and urban theft dominating the security landscape.

Eleme Junction in Rivers State, a strategic transport hub, accounted for 16 incidents, while Onitsha’s bustling trade routes saw 15 cases of theft and related crimes.

“The Port Harcourt-Warri route has now surpassed the Abuja-Kaduna highway in danger levels,” the report added, noting the prevalence of kidnapping for ransom.

Beyond insecurity, the report highlighted infrastructural deficiencies, revealing that 84.6% of respondents had experienced or heard of security incidents on their travel routes. Only 42% found the roads somewhat safe, with just 2.4% considering them very safe.

The survey underscored challenges like potholes, poor drainage, and traffic congestion, exacerbating road hazards. It called for “improved security measures to safeguard travellers” and enhance road infrastructure.

Nigeria’s roads remain fraught with danger, with uneven maintenance and inconsistent police patrols leaving residents and travellers vulnerable.

The findings emphasise the urgent need for strategic interventions to address these challenges and ensure safer travel nationwide.

Several people were reportedly killed in an airstrike in Kakindawa village, Maradun Local Government Area of Zamfara State.

Garba Umar, a resident of the area, told The PUNCH that the incident occurred on Saturday evening as local vigilantes were heading to assist neighbours in Tungar Kara village, which had come under attack by bandits.

According to Umar, the vigilante group mobilised after receiving reports of bandits rustling livestock and attempting to abduct villagers.

As we were heading to Tungar Kara around 3:30 pm, an aircraft suddenly appeared in the area and dropped a bomb on the vigilantes. The bandits had already escaped into the forest,” Umar recounted.

He alleged that 16 people, including his own son, were killed in the airstrike.

We mobilised to protect our neighbours, but tragically, the aircraft targeted the vigilantes instead of the fleeing bandits. It’s heartbreaking,” Umar alleged.

Reacting to the incident, the spokesperson for Operation Fansan Yamma, Lieutenant Colonel Abubakar Abdullahi, told The PUNCH on Sunday morning that he would investigate the matter and provide further details.

“I will look into what actually happened and get back to you,” Abdullahi said.

However, as of the time of filing this report, no additional information had been provided.

Meanwhile, PUNCH Online reported in November 2024 that the Nigerian Air Force said airstrikes conducted in Zamfara State killed numerous bandits, including key loyalists of the notorious bandit leaders, Dan-Isuhu and Dogo Sule.

Similarly, four days ago, on January 8, 2025, troops of the same Operation Fansan Yamma reportedly killed a notorious terrorist leader, Sani Rusu, and scores of his foot soldiers during a gunfight in Bamamu village, Tsafe Local Government Area of Zamfara State.

FG to partner UN to lift Nigerians out of poverty, create two million jobs
Mr Yilwatda noted that the ministry would soon release its 2025 humanitarian response plan.

NEWS AGENCY OF NIGERIA • JANUARY 10, 2025

Nantawe Yilwatda
The federal government has reaffirmed its commitment to partnering with the United Nations (UN) to provide long-lasting solutions that will help lift millions of Nigerians out of poverty.

Nantawe Yilwatda, minister of humanitarian affairs and poverty reduction, disclosed this on Friday while fielding questions from journalists in Abuja.

He disclosed it shortly after his meeting with Amina Mohammed, the Deputy UN Secretary-General.

Mr Yilwatda said that the UN had been a longstanding ally of the ministry and had helped government in actualising some of its social intervention programmes.

The minister said that the partnership became necessary to drive the federal government’s Renewed Hope Agenda in addressing youth unemployment, poverty reduction, and support to victims of conflict and climate change.

“We have the opportunity to partner with the UN to ensure that the people affected by insurgency, climate change and other armed conflicts across the country are supported.

“Especially those that are affected by the impact of economic reforms that we are making to ensure that we give human face to every aspect of the reforms.

“This partnership is going to ensure that we give durable solutions to the plight of our people.

“It will ensure that we lift as many people as possible out of poverty, reduce youth unemployment and ensure that our communities are safe,” he said.

Mr Yilwatda noted that the ministry would soon release its 2025 Humanitarian Response Plan to provide Nigerians with a guide to government’s drive towards addressing poverty in the country.

“We are going to unveil our Humanitarian Response Plan in weeks to come, specifically on Dec. 23, which will be the need assessment of all the humanitarian problems and challenges across the country.

“Together with the UN, we will work around the world globally to raise funds for the country using that Humanitarian Response Plan.

“Also, within the first quarter of the year, the Durable Solution Plan and programme that we are doing will also come into effect.

“I am sure Mr President, who is willing to ensure poverty reduction, has provided a lot of funding for the safety net, especially if you check the proposed 2025 Budget, you’ll discover that there are a lot of funding provided for safety nets.

“These are also verifiable plans by the government to ensure that they participate along with the UN in reducing poverty and providing a safety net for the poorest of the poor,” he said.

Mr Yilwatda said the ministry aims to create at least two million jobs by the end of 2025.

In her response, the UN deputy secretary-general assured the federal government of its readiness to partner with the country in addressing multidimensional poverty.

Ms Mohammed said that the ministry was critical to UN’s mission to ensure that people and communities are safe and lifted out of the poverty line.

“People are on the move today, different crisis, it’s climate, it’s conflict, it’s internal displacement through different hardships.

“So that makes this ministry a focal place for providing prevention and dealing with the solutions to humanitarian crises.

“The indices of poverty in the country are high.

“So, when host communities come in, you have to accommodate them as well so that you don’t have the burden of those coming in and creating social tensions,” she said.

Ms Mohammed emphasised the need for greater investment in social intervention to address the country’s growing humanitarian needs.

“Huge investment is needed in the country so that we can have those transitions that will make us more resilient,” she said.

The Senate Committee on Appropriations has asked the Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, to give detailed explanations on savings from the removal of fuel subsidy and how the proceeds have being utilized.

This followed interrogation from Senator Abdul Ningi (PDP, Bauchi Central) on the allocation of fuel subsidy removal funds in the 2024 fiscal year

The minister of finance wale Edun immediately requested that the committee hold a closed-door session for a more thorough discussion.

Chairman of the Committee, Senator Olamilekan Adeola, subsequently asked journalists to leave for the session to take place privately.

Earlier in the session, the Senate Committee on Information and National Orientation also reviewed budget proposals from agencies under its oversight, including the National Orientation Agency (NOA) and the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

The committee directed the Director General National orientation agency and News Agency of Nigeria to revise and resubmit their budget proposals for the 2025 fiscal year.

Chairman senate committee on Information and National Orientation Kenneth Eze (APC, Ebonyi Central), raised concerns with the NOA’s National Identity Project, questioning its visibility among the Nigerian public, especially those in rural areas.

The NOA DG emphasized the importance of the project in fostering a stronger value system, explaining that it is crucial for national development.

PoliticsYoruba, Igbo, Others Should Separate If Nigeria Isn’t Working – Sunday Igboho by ogododo(op): 2:15pm On Jan 09, 2025
Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, has said many Nigerians are no longer proud to identify themselves as citizens of the West African nation.

In a video seen online on Thursday, Igboho, who was spotted at an airport in the United Kingdom, said corruption, insecurity, and a bad economy are the reasons for the lack of patriotism in the country.

The separatist also stated that various ethnic nationalities should be allowed to go their separate ways if the country cannot function as a unified country.

Igboho said Yoruba youths, who have gained valuable knowledge and experience from travelling worldwide, are eager to transform the Yoruba nation into a modern, prosperous society similar to that of Europe.

He said, “Even inside the airport, there is no security. They can steal your belongings inside your bag (in Nigerian airports). All these are the things dissuading people from being proud of the country, Nigeria.

Things like that make us sad to identify ourselves as Nigerians. This is why we advocate for separation. If Nigeria is not working as a country, it is better we go our separate ways.

“Our (Yoruba) youths will transform Yoruba nation. Most of them have travelled across the world, and they have learned a lot. If they come back to Yoruba land, the knowledge will help them build it and transform the nation like those in Europe.”

PoliticsOAGF Indicts NNPC In N514bn Transactions by ogododo(op): 9:21am On Jan 07, 2025
The Office of Auditor-General for the Federation has uncovered at least four major financial infractions amounting to N514bn in the operations of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited for the financial year ending December 31, 2021.

The alleged infractions include irregular deductions worth N343.64bn from domestic crude sales at source, warehousing of N83.66bn from the federation’s miscellaneous income in a sinking fund account, unauthorised deductions of N82.95bn from the federation revenue for refinery rehabilitation and the unsubstantiated payment of N3.75bn shortfalls from the sale of petrol.

The audit issues are contained in the 2021 audit report of non-compliance/internal control weaknesses in the MDAs for the 2021 financial year obtained by our correspondent on Sunday.

It said the issues violated the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the 2009 Act of Financial Regulations.

So This Happened (134) reviews construction of N21bn 14-bed presidential clinic,...
The report stated that NNPCL didn’t provide any response or justification for the infractions raised by the auditor general.

Analysing the issues, the auditor-general stated that a review of NNPC SAP payment records from March to May 2021 showed that N484.73bn was generated from the sales of 18,966,095 barrels of crude oil but N343.64bn was deducted as operational costs.

It said the company didn’t provide a breakdown of the costs, violating section 162 (1) which states that, “The federation shall maintain a special account to be called the federation account into which all revenue collected by government

The report read, “Audit observed from the review of NNPC SAP payment record for March and May 2021 payments that: The sum of N484.73bn was the gross amount generated for sale of Domestic Crude for the Months of March and May 2021.

“The sum of N343.64bn from the gross amount was unilaterally deducted from the gross domestic crude sales as NNPC Value shortfall, Strategic Stock Holding Cost, Crude Oil and Products Pipeline Losses, as well as the pipelines maintenance and management costs.

“The details of each of the cost components deducted were not provided for audit review. Hence, reasons for the deductions could not be justified by the Management.

“In the month of May, the net payable which could have been remitted ought to have been N127.075bn but only the sum of N77.075bn was remitted, leaving an unremitted balance of N50bn to the Federation Account which has remained unaccounted for.

“The above anomalies could be attributed to weaknesses in the internal control system at NNPC, now NNPC Ltd. This is a potential loss of Federation Revenue, diversion of public funds, or misapplication or misappropriation of funds.”

Another issue raised was the deduction of N82.95bn from the sale of Crude Oil and Gas (Federation Revenue) from the 2020 and 2021 records and for purported Refineries Rehabilitation without evidence of authorisation and approvals before the deductions were made.

“Audit observed from the review of NNPC Payment records for the period 2020 and 2021 that the sum of N82.95bn was deducted from the sale of Crude Oil and Gas (Federation Revenue) from the 2020 and 2021 records.

“This amount deducted at source for purported Refineries Rehabilitation was not supported with evidence of authorization and approvals before the deductions were made.

“The above anomalies could be attributed to weaknesses in the internal control system at NNPC, now NNPC Ltd,” it noted.

Similarly, the auditor-general reported that the national oil firm didn’t report N3.75bn as a shortfall from the sales of petrol sales.

“Audit observed that the sum of N3.75bn was paid to a Company as a shortfall on sales of MT cargo of PMS

“Paragraphs 2 and 3 of the PPMC internal memo with ref. No. PPMC/ EDSS/BILLING/19.16 dated 9/08/2021 advised Marketers to pay naira sales proceeds in advance into the company’s designated accounts, which the company utilised the sum of N3.75bn to purchase forex through NNPC Group treasury to pay the suppliers, and details of the transaction between the NNPC, PPMC and the company that gave rise to the sum of N3.75bn which was paid to the company as shortfall on sales of MT cargo of PMS were not availed for audit.

“The above anomalies could be attributed to weaknesses in the internal control system at the NNPC.”

Also, the audit observed that the sum of N83.66bn, being miscellaneous income from the NNPC joint venture operations from the year 2016 to 2020, was sunk into the CBN/NNPC sinking fund account instead of the Federation Account.

“Warehousing of the miscellaneous income of 2016 to 2020 meant for the Federation Account into the CBN/NNPC Sinking Fund Account led the Federation to resort to borrowings,” the report noted.

The report further recommended that the NNPCL Group Chief Executive Officer should be requested to furnish reasons for the spending to the Public Accounts Committees of the National Assembly or face sanctions relating to irregular payment and gross misconduct specified in paragraphs 3106, 3112, 3115, and 3129 of the Financial Regulations 2009.

Within this period, the Federal Government recorded a revenue shortfall of N2tn as revenue projection stood at N6.64tn while actual revenue was N4.64tn.

PoliticsNDLEA Nabs Popular Lagos Socialite Over Illicit Drugs Shipments From China by ogododo(op): 1:55pm On Jan 05, 2025
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, said on Sunday that its operatives arrested a wanted drug kingpin and Lagos socialite, 61-year-old Alhaja Aishat Feyisara Ajoke Elediye on Wednesday 1st January 2025 in her mansion at Okota area of Lagos following the interception of a truckload illicit drug consignment from her staff same day.

Spokesman of the agency, Femi Babafemi said, “Known in the drug underworld as ‘Iya Ruka’, Alhaja Ajoke as she is fondly called in social circle, has her true identity shrouded in mystery for years while she remained on the wanted list of NDLEA for leading one of the drug cartels operating from Mushin area of Lagos.

“The lid was however blown off her invincibility on Wednesday 1st January 2025 when NDLEA operatives acting on intelligence intercepted a white Isuzu truck carrying 44 jumbo sacks containing 1,540 kilograms of imported cannabis and driven by one of her staff, 41 year-old Abideen Adio.

I sold wristwatch, did okada, keke work; now I have fame but no money — Angel Babaorobo, Skit Maker0:02 / 1:00

“Thereafter, the operatives stormed her hideout at 33 Adebayo Oyewole street, off Ago Palace way, Okota, where they arrested her.

“On the surface, Alhaja Ajoke is a businesswoman who imports fabrics and shoes from China but beneath is a massive illicit drug trade.

“She is also recognized as the Iyalaje of Blessing Sisters, an influential club of society women in Lagos”.

“In another major operation, NDLEA officers on Friday 27th December 2024 arrested a US-trained Hollywood and Nollywood filmmaker, Emeka Emmanuel Mbadiwe, who is also a motivational speaker at his Lekki Hotel room.

“His followed the arrest of his partner, Uzoekwe Ugochukwu James, who was earlier been arrested same day at a warehouse in Ajao estate Ikeja, where he was sent by Mbadiwe to collect a shipment of 33 parcels of Loud, a strong strain of cannabis weighing 17.30 kilograms, which arrived the Import shed of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, MMIA Ikeja on 24th December 2024 from the United States on a Delta Airline flight, concealed in large wooden boxes.

In Kwara state, a fresh graduate Khadijat Abdulraheem, 24, and a 20-year-old student of the University of Ilorin, Ayomide Morakinyo were on Sunday 29th December 2024 arrested by NDLEA operatives at Tanke-University of Ilorin road, Oke Odo, Ilorin based on credible intelligence that they were producing and selling drug laced cupcakes to students in the community.

When their apartment was searched, 42 pieces of drugged cakes were recovered from them.

An ex-convict, Sodade Sunday Eniola, who was arrested by operatives of the Tincan Command of NDLEA in June, 2024, for drug trafficking, prosecuted and sentenced to four years in prison has been arrested again by officers of the MMIA Strategic Command of the Agency for passport racketeering.

When he was convicted by a Federal High Court in Lagos on 14th June 2024, the trial judge gave him an option of paying N750,000 fine, which he paid and was let go.

However, in series of operations in December 2024, NDLEA operatives at the export shed of the Lagos airport intercepted no fewer than 52 passports of different countries from shipments going to Canada, Russia, and other countries concealed in shoe soles and food items.

Further investigations led to the arrest of four members of three syndicates involved in the racket.

The arrested suspects include: Sodade Sunday Eniola; Ayinde Saheed Awwal; Salaudeen Afeez Ayode; and Sheriff Adebayo Bamigbade.

Both the exhibits and the suspects were on Monday 30th December 2024 handed over to the Zonal Command of the Nigerian Immigration Service in Lagos for further investigation and possible prosecution.

Not less than 316, 800 bottles of codeine-based syrup were recovered from two containers by NDLEA officers at the Port Harcourt Ports Complex, Onne Rivers state during a joint examination of the shipments with men of Nigeria Customs and other security agencies on Tuesday 31st December 2024.

The seizure followed credible intelligence processed by the Port Harcourt Port Command of the Agency.

PoliticsWarri Refinery: Marketers Eye Loading Of Petrol February by ogododo(op): 4:03am On Jan 05, 2025
Oil marketers have started loading Automotive Gas Oil (diesel), and Kerosene from the Warri Refining and Petrochemical Company.

Dealers confirmed this to Sunday PUNCH on Friday, as they demanded Premium Motor Spirit (petrol) from the recently rehabilitated plant.

WRPC, under the management of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, came on stream on December 30, 2024, after the Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPCL, Mele Kyari, announced its resumption of operations during a tour of the facility.

Speaking with one of our correspondents on Friday at the refinery, the Chairman of the Delta State chapter of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, Harry Okenini, said though the plant was working, it was not at 100 per cent functionality.

He, however, pointed out that marketers had started lifting diesel and kerosene from the refinery.

“Right now, there is no production of petrol. So, we are not loading PMS. We hope to load PMS soon. We can confirm to you that the plant is working although not at 100 per cent. And IPMAN, Warri Depot Unit, is waiting for the production of PMS so that we can load.

“For now, only the Automotive Gas Oil, popularly called diesel, and Dual Purpose Kerosene are being produced and loaded out for consumption.

“Hopefully, by February, we are expecting cooking gas, PMS, and other products to come out. As of now, the retail unit is only loading AGO and DPK,” he added.

Also speaking with our correspondents at the refinery, the National Chairman of the Surface Tank and Kerosene Peddlers, a branch of NUPENG, Israel Omokere, stated that the refinery was in operation.

He said, “Hopefully the PMS will come on board. We are loading kerosene and AGO for now.”

On his part, the Delta State Chairman of Surface Tank and Kerosene Peddlers branch of NUPENG, Kingsley Erituoyo, said, “For so many years the refinery was down, today the refinery is up.

Findings at the Warri refinery by our correspondents showed scanty movement of trucks in and out of the complex.

Sunday PUNCH observed that skeletal activities were ongoing at the WRPC, compared with the heyday of the refinery when the company was working at full capacity.

Industry sources disclosed that there was more to be put in place by the Federal Government and the NNPCL for the refinery to commence full production of PMS.

During the visit to the WRPC complex, it was also observed that the main entrance to the refinery looked almost as if nothing was going on.

Security operatives at the gate stopped journalists from taking photographs on the premises.

Sources inside the refinery said only one of three units of the refinery was functional and producing diesel, gas, and kerosene.

“For now, only one unit is working at the refinery. You know there are three units; but only one is in operation, producing diesel, gas, and kerosene.

“The unit can’t give fuel for now. If the second unit starts working, it can produce PMS. It is the last unit to operate because it’s very big and complicated.

“If all units are working, we can load over 100 trucks daily, now it loaded about 50 trucks,” a source said.

PoliticsObasanjo Says Invitation To Inspect The Refineries Is Disrespectful by ogododo(op): 4:16am On Jan 04, 2025
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has slammed the recent invitation the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited extended to him, describing it as disrespectful.

The NNPCL had, through its spokesperson, Olufemi Soneye, invited the former president for a tour of the Port Harcourt and Warri refineries.

The corporation’s invitation followed an interview on Channels Television on Thursday, during which the ex-president recounted failed efforts to privatise oil plants in the country.

Obasanjo expressed frustration over the mismanagement of refineries, noting that despite significant expenditure since 2007, no results had been achieved.

He explained that his successor, Musa Yar’Adua, rejected a $750m offer from the Chairman of the Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, to manage the Port Harcourt and Kaduna refineries.

According to Obasanjo, the NNPCL was aware of its limitations in managing the nation’s refineries but informed Yar’Adua that the corporation could operate them, leading to the rejection of Dangote’s offer.

He said, “When I was president, I wanted to do something about the three refineries we have: Port Harcourt, Warri, and Kaduna. Aliko got a team together after I asked Shell to come and run it for us. And Shell said they wouldn’t. I said, ‘Please come and take equity’, they said no. I said, ‘Okay, don’t take equity, come and run it’, they said no.

“Aliko got a team together and they paid $750m to take part in PPP (Public–Private Partnership) in running the refineries. My successor refunded their money, and I went to my successor; I told him what transpired; he said NNPC said they wanted the refinery and they could run it, and I said, ‘But you know they cannot run it.”

Obasanjo added, “But I was told not too long ago that since that time, more than $2bn had been squandered on the refineries, and they still would not work.”

He stressed that if a company like Shell rejected his offer to manage the refineries based on their reasons, he would believe the company.

The former president expressed confidence in Dangote’s ability to manage his privately owned refinery effectively, contrasting it with the government’s inefficiency.

In response, the NNPCL spokesperson Femi Soneye insisted that the refineries were working.

Soneye explained that the NNPCL had not only carried out turnaround maintenance on the plants but also embarked on a complete overhaul of the refineries to meet world-class standards.

He said, “We extend an open invitation to former President Obasanjo for a tour of the rehabilitated refineries to witness firsthand the progress made under the new NNPC Limited.”

Reacting to the invitation in an interview with Saturday PUNCH, Obasanjo said such an open invitation was disrespectful to his office and person.

The former president, while speaking through his media aide, Kehinde Akinyemi, stated that the oil company had not sent any formal invitation to him as of Thursday, January 2, 2024.

“Is that the right way to invite a former president of the country? Who says Baba has even seen the statement or read the news? It is a total disrespect for the office of the former president.

“Ask the NNPCL that as of January 2, have they written to him? Is there any official letter addressed to him, inviting him to the refinery? It is an absolute insult, and the former president cannot dignify such with a response,” Obasanjo’s aide stated.

Saturday PUNCH called Soneye three times and sent him text and WhatsApp messages to ask if the oil company had indeed officially invited the former president.

However, Soneye did not take his calls or respond to messages from our reporter as of the time of filing this report.

The news of the reopening of the Warri refinery for production had been met with skepticism from Nigerians.

This was after the Group Chief Executive Officer of the NNPCL, Mele Kyari, announced that the Port Harcourt refinery had officially commenced crude oil processing on November 26.

However, visits by Saturday PUNCH to the refinery on two occasions showed the contrary.

On Friday, November 29, when our correspondent made his first visit, he discovered there was no activity on site as the loading bay was empty.

Workers at the refinery revealed that the facility was undergoing calibration, which might last until the following week.

After two weeks of inactivity, the Port Harcourt Refining Company reportedly resumed operations, with the NNPCL claiming that no fewer than 11 trucks had started loading from the plant.

During our reporter’s second visit to the plant on Thursday, December 19, 2024, he observed that the lifting of petrol had again stopped.

Saturday PUNCH gathered that the lifting of petrol actually stopped on Friday, December 13, as the 18-arm loading bay of the Port Harcourt refinery was empty.

A truck driver said, “It was Friday last week they loaded last. About 15 trucks or so loaded that day. Since then, not even a single truck has been loaded till now.

Asked if any explanation was given, he replied, “I don’t know. Nobody is giving us any information or telling us anything. Some trucks that were here have left. I’m just here because my director said I should wait a bit.”

Soneye on both occasions declined to respond to phone calls and text messages from Saturday PUNCH.

While the oil company had yet to address growing doubts over the refinery’s operations, Kyari announced on December 31 that the Warri Refining & Petrochemical Company in Delta State had commenced operations.

Afenifere, CUPP back ex-president

Reacting, the Secretary-General of the Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, Chief Sola Ebiseni, said it was disrespectful for the NNPCL to have invited the former president through newspaper publications after he rightly commented on the management deficiencies that had grounded Nigeria’s refineries for years.

“What former President Obasanjo said was quite illuminating about the way the affairs of the country have been or are being handled. He has been out of office since 2007, and until now, what we have seen is the epileptic performance of the refineries. So, it is sheer arrogance and disrespect for the NNPCL to claim they invited him to come and see,” Ebiseni stated.

He added, “If you want to invite a statesman and former president like Obasanjo, no matter how you feel about the statement he made, you shouldn’t resort to disrespectful politics. If you believe that what he said does not reflect the current state of the plants, you should pay him a courtesy visit to present your views about the situation. But to go on the pages of newspapers to paint a picture of a liar—which is what the NNPCL’s action implies—leaves much to be desired,” the Afenifere scribe concluded.

Similarly, the National Secretary of the Coalition of United Political Parties, Chief Peter Ameh, said inviting the former president through newspapers amounted to public ridicule and utter disrespect for his history, reputation, and record in the country.

He said, “You cannot invite Obasanjo on the pages of newspapers. Even the GMD cannot invite another company head in such a manner, not to mention someone who has served both as a General in the Nigerian Army and as a military Head of State, as well as a two-term democratically elected president of the country. The NNPCL must learn how to do things the right way and avoid politicising everything, as this is why our economy has nosedived.

“That is simply the NNPCL’s usual way of prioritising politics over issues that affect the lives of ordinary Nigerians. If Obasanjo says the refineries are not working after we have wasted about $2 billion on them, he is merely stating that we should have handed the plants over to private individuals to get them working optimally through private partnerships.”

I posted the above topic before when I married the ugly village girl my mom insisted I must marry.

We've been together for 2 years now, no child. The problem is that she's always giving me one infection or the other. I've treated infection for more than 3 times and this is someone I married a virgin.

The other day, I was peeing blood and it was so painful coming out. I've never cheated on her and I'm sure she's not cheating but I don't know how she gets these infections.

Right now, I'm on a sick bed battling infection and other ailment....on a new year day. My stomach has been biting me for 3 days now.

I'm tired. I'm thinking of sending her back to the village before she kills me.

I've told my mom that I'm no longer interested but she keeps on begging and telling me that things will get better. Things are getting worse day by day. She's so dull. She just sits at home. No ambition....nothing! Just cooks, washes, cleans, then stays home all day watching movies. A graduate with masters.

I'm so frustrated!
Osanobuwa, for new year. Na golokoko be dat.

Illicit money will be taxed under new tax bill – Taiwo Oyedele
by Oluwatobi Odeyinka 15 seconds ago
The Chairman, Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, Taiwo Oyedele has said that illicit funds in Nigeria such as laundered money or proceeds of crimes will also be taxed under the controversial tax reform bill.

Oyedele made the assertion when speaking on an X space hosted by Nairametrics in partnership with Business Day, BudgIT, and CODE.

He explained that the government will rely on data and intelligence reports to track illicit funds of Nigerians and tax them before probing the sources of such funds.

He said such tax will be collected through what he tagged a “voluntary disclosure programme”, in which people will declare the source of their funds whether legal or illegal.

“Yes, we have provisions (for illicit funds) in those bills. You have to pay tax regardless of the source of the income, and once we find that you have revenue, including from the international data we’re going to be receiving, and you can’t explain it, you have to pay the tax.

“But for people to be able to do that almost seamlessly, we plan to do a voluntary disclosure programme, where we give the people the opportunity to self-declare before we now come down on them because this time around there is going to be data and everybody will know it is not a joke,” he clarified.

Govt will discover revenue through intelligence
Oyedele further explained that the government will find out the revenue of citizens whether a citizen discloses or not.

“We are going to write you and tell you, “This is how much you have in your account”, the number of bank accounts that you have; how much money you spend on your payment card; the money you have with investment accounts and asset management, stock accounts, how many times you have travelled abroad.

“I don’t want to scare anybody but these are pieces of cake that they have been doing in small, large, developed, underdeveloped countries for years. So we are not even doing anything that is novel, we are just trying to be at par with the rest of the world.”

It will help fight corruption
Oyedele also noted that expanding the tax net to the underworld of crimes will help Nigeria fight corruption.

He said: “We think this will also help us to fight corruption because if we want to do this seriously, this is how to tackle corruption.

“Because I find money that you can’t explain, then I collect the tax fast, then I come back to say “by the way, where did you get the money from?”

He added that the bill makes provision for an Ombudsman to ensure that taxpayers are not cheated and overtaxed. He said the Ombudsman would be legally empowered to function

“The Ombudsman can also bite. And it is not just about protecting the vulnerable person, you come in and just vent. The Ombudsman has the means and resources to intervene immediately. And there are consequences for the revenue authority if they don’t listen to you, including legally.”

What you should know
The tax bill provides relief for low-income earners and small businesses as they would be exempt from income taxes and value-added taxes.
However, it is facing strong resistance from the Northern part of the country, where political stakeholders say it would not benefit the region.
Virtually all governors in the Northern region have opposed the bill.
