Also confirming Najeebah’s killing on Saturday night in a post on X, former Minister of Communication and Digital Economy, Prof. Isa Ali Pantami, said he had spoken with the father of Najeebah over the remaining kidnapped girls. The killing of a Nigerian lady, Nabeeha who was abducted along with her five sisters and their father in their house in Abuja on January 2, has sparked outrage in the country. Following the reported killing of Nabeeha, Nigerians on social media have lamented the escalating insecurity in the country and have started a donation campaign to raise money for the ransom to secure the release of her remaining five sisters from their abductors. An X user, @Adamu_Asiya_, who identified herself as a cousin of the Nabeeha and her abducted sisters, in the early hours of Wednesday, January 3, announced their abduction in a post. @Adamu_Asiya_, who said that her uncle was killed during the attack when Najeebah (the eldest of the sisters) and her sisters were kidnapped wrote, “Please pray for my sisters and uncle when you see this. Najeebah, her sisters, and her dad were kidnapped in their house last night. We lost an uncle in the process. Your duas are needed.” After two days she made her first post, she made another post saying that Najeebah’s father had been released by the kidnappers but that a ransom of N60 million was placed on the lives of Najeebah and her sisters and that the kidnappers had given January 12 as a deadline. Her post led to the creation of a hashtag, #Najeebahandhersisters to raise the N60 million but while the fundraising campaign was going, @Adamu_Asiya_ in the early hours of Saturday in a post announced that the kidnappers had killed one of the sisters, Nabeeha following failure to meet the deadline given by the kidnappers for the payment of the N60 million ransom. She said that the kidnappers thereafter raised the ransom demand to N100 million. Also confirming Najeebah’s killing on Saturday night in a post on X, former Minister of Communication and Digital Economy, Prof. Isa Ali Pantami, said he had spoken with the father of Najeebah over the remaining kidnapped girls. The former minister wrote, “Inna lil Laahi wa inna ilaiHi Raajiun! I just read about the killing of our daughter Najeeba (400 level, ABU). I also spoke with her father about the remaining 5 of our kidnapped daughters. May Allah forgive her, rescue others & bring absolute peace to Nigeria.” Meanwhile, Bashir Ahmad, a former aide to former President Muhammadu Buhari, had called on the Nigeria Police Force to take necessary actions on the matter and ensure the girls were rescued unhurt. Ahmad wrote in a post on X saying, “I join fellow concerned Nigerians in urgently calling on the @PoliceNG through its PPRO @PrinceMoye1 to acknowledge and respond to the unfortunate incident involving the kidnapping of Najeebah and five of her sisters #NajeebahAndHerSisters more than a week ago. “The information shared by a family member @Adamu_Asiya_ this morning indicated that the kidnappers have tragically killed Najeebah as a warning and demanded a N100 million ransom for the release of the remaining victims. “We implore the Nigeria Police to prioritise this case and deploy all necessary resources to safely rescue the remaining victims. Thank you!” In reaction, the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said the police would need to get in touch with a member of the victims’ family. The Force spokesperson wrote, “Please let the family members or you relate with us codedly. Let them reach out to me on my personal line, and drop a message there. We have been working on it, but we need some info. We will try our best possible to emplace all necessary measures to rescue them unhurt. But we need to get some info pls. Thanks.” Responding to Adejobi, Ahmad said that he had linked the police with a senior member of the victims’ family, saying, “Following our exchanges with @PoliceNG Public Relations Officer, @PrinceMoye1, I have spoken with a relative of Najeebah. We agreed that a senior family member would directly take up the matter with Prince Muyiwa in person, away from social media platforms. “The family expresses their gratitude to all Nigerians for their concern and support during this challenging period. “Now, with the authorities involved, we are hopeful that #NajeebahAndHerSisters will be swiftly and safely rescued and reunited with their family.” But following Nabeeha’s killing on Saturday by her abductors, Nigerians on social media have decried the security situation in the country, calling on security agencies to rescue the remaining girls unhurt and saying that the Nigerian government should be held responsible for the ugly incident. As an X user, @IB_Bayawa wrote, “Ya Allah! Forgive her and rescue all our Muslim brothers and sisters!!” another X user, @TayeloluJ wrote, “Leave Allah and do the needful. Call out the government, security forces, protest, or pay the ransom. Allah is always there to forgive when they are dead.” Also, @MaRyAm_MuKtAr wrote, “Good morning arewa, I’m sure most of us found it hard to sleep peacefully yesterday, yes it is expected because our lives are no longer safe in the comforts of our homes. “It is time to make noise till our voices are heard!!! Let us set our differences aside and make sure our leaders do right by us, after all we fought tooth and nail to vote and see some of them in office!!! “Yes we will continue to fight for our rights! We have rights to security but they are leaving us in the hands of our enemies!!!!!” Another netizen, @eksvi12 said, “Please call on Tinubu and ask him to change our security ministers. They don't even have a good track record on security issues, talk less of they are going to make a change in security concerns.” https://saharareporters.com/2024/01/14/najeebahandhersisters-nigerian-tweeps-express-anger-seek-donations-pay-ransom-5-sisters |

The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, has tasked Nigerians with unity and peaceful coexistence for the growth and development of Nigeria. Abubakar made the call on Saturday while declaring open the Alhaji Abdullahi Habib Memorial Mosque at the Federal University Lokoja (FUL). The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the mosque was built and donated by a widow, Dr Maimuna Abdullahi. The sultan, who was represented by the Emir of Keffi, Shehu Chindo-Yamusa III, said the gesture was commendable. According to him, as patriotic citizens, Nigerians should learn to always respect leaders and the rule of law, for the nation to have a direction for better living. “We should fervently pray for our leaders and not curse them so that they don’t go astray, to our detriment as a nation. “That is why this edifice or place of worship is built and donated by a family that loves God and desires for others to know and worship Him for their wellbeing. “It’s my prayer that God will handsomely reward the Habib family and give others the passion and zeal to do the same for the benefit of mankind,” he said. Earlier, FUL Vice-Chancellor (VC), Prof. Olayemi Akinwumi, appreciated the donation to the school. According to Akinwumi, the Mosque will serve as a testament to our shared commitment to knowledge, compassion, and service to humanity. He also called on well-spirited individuals to assist further in the development of the Mosque so that other components of the architectural designs were accomplished. We’ll not allow charlatans to ruin Benue education system – DG “The commissioning of the Mosque today is but a historic moment in the annals of this university. “The Muslim community will observe daily religious obligations that will foster the unity of all faiths in the university. “Qur’an chapter 57 verse 18 says: “For those who give in charity, men, and women, and loan to Allah a beautiful loan, it shall be increased manifold (to their credit), and they shall have (besides) a liberal reward. “This explains the circumstance of Dr Maimuna Abdullahi our benefactor, who in her wisdom, decided to build and donate this Mosque in memory of her late husband, Squadron Leader Abdullahi Habib. ”This mosque, Alhaji Abdullahi Habib Memorial Mosque Federal University Lokoja, is situated in an expanse of land, 150m x 250m. I am immensely grateful to almighty God for this Mosque,” he said. He commended Dr Maimuna Abdullahi and her family for finding Federal University Lokoja worldwide worthy of the gigantic mosque and prayed to God to bless them. The donor said the Mosque was a dream come true of her late husband, who he said left the instructions for her and the children to accomplish. Abdullahi added that the Mosque was the third and biggest of the three Mosques the family built and donated in Kogi as its way of giving back to God and society. “Today, we have equally donated 75 copies of the Qur’an to this very mosque located in FUL as our gesture in the service of God. “This gesture is just the beginning and not an end to our resolve as a family to serve the Almighty God, ” she said. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2024/01/dont-curse-our-leaders-sultan-tasks-nigerians-on-unity-peaceful-coexistence/amp/ |
Most Widely Read Newspaper Home News AFCON 2023 Investigations Metro Plus Videos Politics Business HealthWise Editorial Columns Podcast CBN decongests head office, moves departments to Lagos 13th January 2024 Central Bank of Nigeria building By Daniel Adaji Kindly share this story: The Central Bank of Nigeria is set to transfer some of its departments to Lagos State. This was stated in an Internal memo made available to PUNCH Online on Saturday. The move, according to an official of the CBN who spoke on condition of anonymity, is to decongest the apex bank’s head office. Although some staff members of the bank have reportedly resisted the transfer and claimed that it is motivated by tribal sentiment, the source said it is for their safety and increased productivity. Day 14: Let's Count Down To 2024 Together! | Punch0:00 / 0:50 “What is happening now at the CBN is likened to a company with over 500 staff and say 200 used to go to work in other states and return to the head office. It is not out of place for the company to relocate them fully to that state to work and increase their safety and productivity,” he said. The official stated that only some departments of the apex bank, including the Bank Supervision Department, were affected by the transfer. He stated that the move is meant to increase the productivity of the affected staff while also cutting costs and ensuring their safety. PUNCH Online gathered through the official that the departments penciled down for relocation by the CBN Governor, Yemi Cardoso are Banking Supervision; Other Financial Institutions Supervision; Consumer Protection Department; Payment System Management Department and Financial Policy Regulations Department. ” Most of the bank’s headquarters are in Lagos. The CBN usually sends staff from Abuja to work in Lagos for like one to two months and return to the head office. “Being on the road all the time is not safe for them and not also cost-efficient for the bank. We know that anybody leaving their comfort would feel the pain, that is why some of the affected workers are complaining but I can assure you that, it is for their good,” he said. He also noted that the carrying capacity of the Abuja office is 3 000 but the staff strength is at 4 000 now which is a threat to the facilities at the head office. Related News Keystone Bank allays customers' fear, promises smooth operations Union, Polaris, Keystone: CBN plans shareholders summit, compiles new directors’ lists No CBN official arrested, says DSS “Abuja office is designed to carry about 3 000 staff but we are 4 000 already. The facility managers have already warned of the implication; the security of staff is also at stake with the increased number because it overwhelms the managers,” the official stated. Excerpts from the memo obtained read, “This is to notify all staff members at the CBN Head Office that we have initiated a decongestion action plan designed to optimise the operational environment of the bank. “This initiative aims to ensure compliance with building safety standards and enhance the efficient utilisation of our office space. “This action is necessitated by several factors, including the need to align the Bank’s structure with its functions and objectives, redistribute skills to ensure a more even geographical spread of talent and comply with building regulations, as indicated by repeated warnings from the Facility Manager, and the findings and recommendations of the Committee on Decongestion of the CBN Head Office. “The action plan focuses on optimising the utilisation of other Bank’s premises. With this plan, 1,533 staff will be moved to other CBN facilities within Abuja, Lagos and understaffed branches. “Our current occupancy level of 4,233 significantly exceeds the optimal capacity of 2,700 designed for the Head Office building. This overcrowding poses several critical challenges: “Safety Concerns: The building’s infrastructure was designed for a specific number of occupants. Exceeding this capacity has raised safety concerns, increased health and accident risks – and hinders efficient emergency evacuation. “Reduced Efficiency: Crowded workspaces are negatively impacting productivity and collaboration. Additionally, overstretched facilities have led to increased maintenance costs. “Structural Integrity: The building’s integrity can be compromised by exceeding its designed capacity.” The memo further said the decongestion would also improve the apex bank’s operational and workflow efficiency. “Strategic alignment: The decision to redistribute departments and staff is rooted in a strategic approach to align the structure of the Bank with its functions and objectives. Certain departments may be better suited to operate in proximity to Financial Institutions’ head offices, which are predominantly located in Lagos. This strategic alignment ensures optimal collaboration and efficiency,” the memo stated. https://punchng.com/cbn-decongests-head-office-moves-departments-to-lagos/ |

President Bola Tinubu, on Thursday, at the State House in Abuja, received briefings on prospective investments in Nigeria’s steel sector from the Minister of Steel Development, Shuaibu Audu, and the Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru. This was as he approved the restart of the Light Steel Mill section of Ajaokuta Steel Complex for the production of iron rods which will cost N35bn at the first stage. The President emphasised that a revitalised steel development industry is both a catalyst for robust economic growth and a doorway to immense opportunities for Nigeria’s massive pool of talented entrepreneurs. According to a statement signed by Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, the Minister of Steel Development informed the President of discussions with the representatives of Jindal Steel Group of India. Let Us Take You On A Reflection Journey Through The Notable Occurrences Of 20230:00 / 0:00 This comes five months after Jindal Steel Group indicated interest in investing up to $5bn in a new steel plant in Nigeria on the sidelines of the G20 meeting in New Delhi, India, in September 2023. Audu said the company is now considering either acquiring existing plants or setting up greenfield plants. According to the minister, upon the completion of these deals, about $10bn worth of new investments in both new and existing steel plants in Nigeria will be established, which will create over 500,000 direct and indirect jobs in the steel industry. In response, Tinubu said, “We will remain unyielding in our determination to build a Nigeria where every citizen has an equal opportunity to prosper and achieve their dreams. “New investments in steel production will spur the growth of so many sectors. Industrialisation will be a reality in our country with sufficient energy and steel. Nigerian steel will undergird our economy and other economies in our region in future years. “I am glad that members of my cabinet have adopted my approach to attracting new investments and job opportunities for our people. Hard work is the only true pathway. We will not relent.” The ministers informed the President of their discussions with another entity, a Chinese company, Luan Steel Holding Group, to build a new steel plant in Nigeria, as well as to commence the production of military hardware in the Ajaokuta Steel Plant. A delegation led by the Minister of Defence and the Minister of Steel Development visited the Hefei and Guangzhou regions of China to hold business talks with the Chairman of Luan Steel Holding Group, Mr Wang Jianbing; the Chief Executive Officer of the Company, Mr Xiao Weizhan, and other senior executives of the Luan Steel Holding Group. According to Ngelale, the Chinese company is expected to invest billions of dollars in Nigeria to build the new steel plant. The Minister of Steel Development briefed the President, following his approval to restart the Light Steel Mill section of Ajaokuta Steel Complex for the production of iron rods, on the progress made on restarting the section. He said several financial institutions had already provided offer letters for this transaction and that the project is expected to create up to 5,000 direct and indirect jobs for Nigerians. https://punchng.com/tinubu-approves-restart-of-light-steel-section-of-ajaokuta-company/ |

January 7, 2024 Press Statement N44bn Fraud: @OfficialPDPNig Demands Betta Edu’s Sack, Prosecution …Alleges Involvement of Two Top @OfficialAPCNg Leaders The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) demands the immediate sack and prosecution of the embattled Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, @edu_betta over the alleged looting of N44 billion National Social Investment Programme Agency (NSIPA) fund, including the N585.2 million audaciously diverted by her to a private account. The exposed fraud in the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs is just a tip of the iceberg of the unprecedented treasury looting, unbridled stealing and plundering of resources going on in the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led All Progressives Congress (APC) administration which has practically brought the nation’s economy to its knees. Is it not tragic and heartbreaking that a Minister entrusted with public funds to support millions of poor Nigerians who have been impoverished by the APC, turned around to divert hundreds of millions of naira meant for the wellbeing of the poor? The continuing stay of Betta Edu as Minister is therefore provocative and amounts to stealing from a people and daring them to do their worst. It further confirms our Party’s position Betta Edu allegedly directed the transfer of the N585.2 million NSIPA money into the private account of one of her fronts in clear violation of Chapter 7, Section 713 of Nigeria’s Financial Regulations, 2009 which expressly prohibits the payment of public money into a private account. For emphasis, Section 713 of Nigeria’s Financial Regulations, 2009 provides that “Personal money shall in no circumstances be paid into a government bank account, nor shall any public money be paid into a private bank account. An officer who pays public money into a private account is deemed to have done so with a fraudulent intention”. The apparent fraudulent intention by Betta Edu in diverting public funds into a private account; an action which was appropriately declared illegal by the Accountant General of the Federation, Oluwatoyin Madein, is consistent with APC’s character and proclivity for plundering of public resources. The lack of remorse by the Minister especially in her lame attempt to justify the illegal diversion of funds meant for poor Nigerians is also consistent with the insensitivity, heartlessness, impunity and criminal audacity inherent in the APC administration. A very disturbing information in the public domain indicates that the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs is allegedly working with two prominent APC officials in the Presidency and the National Assembly, who are alleged to be using Ministers and other officials of government to divert billions of naira to personal accounts. Additional information reveals that there are moves to use the suspended National Coordinator of NSIPA, Halima Shehu as a scapegoat so as to sweep the involvement of the Minister and the said APC leaders under the carpet. What Nigerians demand of President Tinubu at the moment is to demonstrate commitment to the fight against corruption by immediately sacking Betta Edu, hand her over for investigation, prosecution and take steps to recover the stolen N44 billion and channel the fund recovered towards the wellbeing of Nigerians The PDP also demands that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) @officialEFCC immediately invite Betta Edu @edu_betta for questioning and take further steps to commence a system-wide investigation into the alleged large-scale corruption and treasury looting pervading in Ministries, Agencies and Departments (MDAs) under the APC @OfficialAPCNg administration.
