PoliticsNigeria Is Plunging Into Confusion - Emir Of Zuru by oilsuop(op): 5:13pm On Jan 09, 2013
THE Emir of Zuru, Kebbi State, His Royal Highness Muhammadu Sani Sami (Sani Gomo II) yesterday gave a damning verdict of the state of the country by saying that “Nigeria is plunging into confusion.”

The emir said this in an address he gave at the 16th Auchi Day celebration that was held at the palace of the Otaru of Auchi, HRH Alhaji Aliru Momoh.

He said all aspects of Nigeria’s existence, including its peace and unity, are under threat, noting that politicians deliberately through their greed destroyed the political space and then run to them for moral correction.

Represented by the district leader of Senchi, Alhaji Muhammed Senchi, the monarch said the country has derailed from the cardinal principles of its existence.

According to him, “I do not understand why Nigerians should try to destroy Nigeria and believe erroneously that God will save Nigeria. We, Nigerians, try to wreck Nigeria. We should also know that only we can salvage Nigeria.

“The sorry state of the Nigerian nation and its perilous state can only be traced to ourselves. We neglect the fundalmental reasons for the existence of the Nigeria nation as a country. We threw away the binding principles that brought us all together.

“We must change our attitudes and resolve to respect the principles that gave rise to the emergence of the Nigerian experiment. Our leaders and the led should humble themselves and not be guided by corrupts and nepotism.”

He urged traditional rulers to call Nigerian leaders to order to ensure better governance because the Royal Highnesses cleansed the decomposed situation of the country for government of the day to survive.

Edo State governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, in his remarks, said his administration would continue to work for the development and unity of the people of the state and urged religious leaders to play their roles of building a better society.

According to him, “under my stewardship, the government will continue to work closely with the traditional institution because they have helped to make the people of the state know that we are all one, regardless of accidents of birth, language, customs and traditions.”

Oshiomhole added that despite the challenges confronting the country at this time, Nigeria would emerge a stronger nation.

“All nations have their problems. I, however, have the confidence that Nigeria will fulfill her mission on this planet. We may have some challenges, but we won’t fix it by lamenting our fate.

“I plead that the leaders resist all temptations to say anything that will give the young ones the wrong impression that all hope is lost.

“Our task as religious leaders and royal fathers is to continue to enlighten our people,” the governor said.

PoliticsBreaking News National Secretary Of Ohanaeze Warn Gej About Second Term Bid.. by oilsuop(op): 4:43am On Jan 03, 2013
The National Secretary of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief Nduka Eya said Jonathan promised Ndigbo that he would spend only five years in office, pointing out that if he has changed his mind to stay longer, he would meet Ohanaeze for re-negotiation, since it was generally agreed that it ‘’is our turn to produce the next president after Jonathan.’’

Ohanaeze has come out with its stand about the president and there is a book in which our President General, Chief Ralph Uwechue, had analyzed since three years ago. We do not want to dabble into politics, but the fact is that when Jonathan was contesting, he said he will only do only one term. That was what he said. So, the stand of Ohanaeze about presidency 2015 is clear. These are facts.

If Jonathan changes his mind which he has a right to change as a citizen, our position has always been consistent. Equality of zones as envisaged in geopolitical creation by Karibi-Whyte committee on the review of the Constitution is that the present geopolitical zones should remain: South-South, South East, South West, North East, North Central and Northwest. And it has been operational and they call it conventional.

So, Igbo people supported Jonathan for the same argument that this project called Nigeria belongs to all of us, and that at 52 years, a section of this country has monopolized the leadership of that master-key position called the president. If he wants another term, we have to renegotiate.

PoliticsBreaking News..please Save Us From Rampaging Herdsmen by oilsuop(op): 2:23am On Nov 26, 2012
http://www.ngrguardiannews.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=105852:save-us-from-rampaging-herdsmen-&catid=3:metro&Itemid=558

They are appealing to the state government and security agencies to save them from the herdsmen, particularly now that the dry season is approaching.

Speaking to journalists recently, they said every dry season, foreign Fulani herdsmen from Cote d’Ivoire, Niger Republic and Cameroun join local Fulani herdsmen in Nigeria to invade their farms in search of pasture.

With the dry season at hand, their fear is that it would be “a matter of days before the marauding armed herdsmen invade their communities, destroying farmlands with the indiscriminate grazing of their cattle” unless the government and the security agents take adequate measures to prevent such.

A coalition of socio-cultural groups from the 30 communities in the area, including Ketu Advancement Front, Ketu South Peoples’ Assembly and Ketu Alliance at a briefing in Oja Odan, alleged that 21 of their kinsmen had been murdered by the armed herdsmen.

Some of the victims, they said, included a husband and wife as well as father and son.

Their spokesperson, Mr. Lasisi Adewole disclosed that some of the female victims were raped, adding: “Three of our kinsmen, including Phillip Akanan from Owode-Ketu, Amosu Olofinjin and Akinola Tunde from Agbon-Ojodu were killed this year alone by the Fulani herdsmen.

“All our efforts so far to ensure that the police, the State Security Service (SSS) and the state government put in place adequate security measures to protect us from the Fulani herdsmen had yielded no fruits.”

He alleged that the police even shot and killed one Master Tunde Akinola in January this year when the people protested at the palace of the Alademeso of Igan Alade over the murder of one Mr. Amosu Olofinjin by the herdsmen.

Supporting their claims with pictures of some of the victims, the coalition also alleged that the state government and the police had been foot-dragging over the issue.

They alerted security agencies that some herdsmen had threatened to enter Ketu community from Republic of Benin.

“It is against this backdrop that we draw the attention of the world to the failure of our government to guarantee our security as demanded of her by the constitution of the Federal Republic of
Nigeria.

“In the next couple of days, we expect the herdsmen to make good their threat.

“The result will be murder of innocent people, robbery at gun point, raping of both young and old, especially children of school age, attack on villages in the dead of the night, arson, destruction of farm produce and forced closure of schools over insecurity. If this happens, then our government will have to be blamed,” Adewole stressed “

They demanded that the 2007 Ilaro High Court judgment, which barred the Fulani herdsmen from grazing their cattle in the area and the payment of compensation to the victims of past Fulani attacks by the Ogun State Government and the Yewa North Local Council should be complied with.

They also called for an investigation of the alleged extra-judicial killing of a Junior Secondary School student of Area Community High School, Ibeku, Master Tunde Akinola by the police.

In his reaction, the Secretary to the State Government, Taiwo Adeoluwa said that the problem of the clash between the Ketu people and the Fulani had been a recurrent one in the past 15 years, saying that the state government had set up a committee, comprising the Ketu people, the Fulani and government officials to tackle the problem.

Also, the Ogun State Police Command Spokesman, Mr. Muyiwa Adejobi said the police could only ensure that there was no break-down of law and order rather than stopping the Fulani herdsmen from coming into the area. sad sad

PoliticsN6.153 Trillion Domestic Debt: Okonjo-iweala Warns Governors... by oilsuop(op): 1:21am On Nov 10, 2012
Apparently worried over the country’s huge domestic debt put at over N6.153 Trillion the Minister of Finance, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, yesterday warned governors against further exessive borrowing to ensure the economic growth of the country.

Okonjo-Iweala spoke in Enugu while delivering a lecture entitled ‘Managing Public Finance for Agricultural and Industrial Growth’ at the 2012 South East Economic Summit.

She said that the mounting domestic debt was as dangerous as the external one, adding that strategies were being put in place to reduce the country’s debt.

Minister of Finance, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala
“I want to give advice to our governors here. Those who are taking domestic debt need to watch it because it is as dangerous as or even more so than the external debt.
“When you have domestic debt, you must service it because it is your institutions, your pension funds, your banks who owe this debt and you must have to pay it otherwise it leads to other consequences within the economy.

“I am happy to say that we have put in place a very good strategy to manage the national domestic debt which is to decelerate the rate at which we borrow,” she warned.

On agriculture in the South East, the minister said the zone had a comparative advantage for the production of some food crops but was being hampered by limited land and tremendous gully erosion.

Okonjo-Iweala said the World Bank had provided a credit of $450 million for the South East to decisively deal with gully erosion to promote agriculture.

The minister stressed the need for an increase in the financial mortgage system to create opportunity for youths to own houses.

On his part, the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, explained that the zone would not progress without developing a sound vision.

According to Soludo, developing the vision would help to drive the economy of the zone to greater heights.

He, however, called on the governors of the South East to create an enabling environment for investors to thrive in the zone.

The country’s domestic debt profile rose to N6.153tn in June.
Statistics obtained from the Debt Management Office showed that the domestic debts had increased from N5.966tn ($37.71bn) at the end of the first quarter ended March 31, 2012, to N6.153tn ($38.89bn) at the end of the second quarter ended June 30, 2012.

This represents an increase of N187bn or three per cent over the figure recorded in the first quarter.

Details of the domestic debts showed that Federal Government of Nigeria, FGN, bonds accounted for N3.71tn or 60.37per cent of the money borrowed by the Federal Government from internal sources as at June ending.

The Nigerian Treasury Bills accounted for N2.08tn or 33.88 per cent, while Treasury Bonds accounted for N353bn or 5.75 per cent.

As at March 31, 2012, the domestic debt component of the total debt profile, which stood at N5.966tn, showed that FGN bonds accounted for N3.67trillion or 61.44 per cent of the money borrowed by the Federal Government.

The Nigerian Treasury Bills accounted for N1.95tn or 32.63 per cent, while Treasury Bonds accounted for N353.73m or 5.93 per cent.

Presenting the 2012 budget proposal to the National Assembly, President Goodluck Jonathan had lamented that the domestic debt had been growing at an alarming rate in recent years with the clearest evidence of this being that in 2012, the Federal Government earmarked N560bn for debt servicing.

Jonathan had spoken of curtailing domestic debts, but ostensibly gave room for the government to accumulate more debts with a caveat that the debts should not go beyond 30 per cent of Gross Domestic Product.

At the moment, the debt to GDP ratio is slightly less than 20 per cent. With latitude of 30 per cent debt to GDP ratio, the government can add up to 50 per cent of the current debt level.

The Head of Research and Strategy at BGL Securities Limited, Mr. Olufemi Ademola, recently attributed the increase in domestic debts to a shortfall in revenue and the controversial oil subsidy expenditure.
