The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU
has kicked against the appointment of former
Vice Chancellor of University of Ilorin, Professor
Ishaq Oloyede as JAMB Registrar, calling for his
probe.
It added that his era as Vice Chancellor was
characterized with anti-democratic and anti-
union antecedents.
ASUU President, Professor Biodun Ogunyemi
while addressing journalists in Lagos said: "Given
our inside knowledge of his anti democratic and
anti-union antecedents, Professor Oloyede is the
last person that we expected to be so honoured
with a national appointment of that status in the
education sector."
According to Ogunyemi, Oloyede 's anti-workers
stance stood out in the case of the sacked
UNILORIN 49.
"He led the administration's team to as far as
Lagos to testify falsely against the workers
before the Industrial Arbitration Panel,"
Ogunyemi said.
He said that when academic staff were
reinstated in 2009 by the Supreme Court,
Oloyede, as VC then refused to fully implement
the orders of the Court.
Ogunyemi pointed out that in 2008, Oloyede as
VC said that UNILORIN is happy without ASUU,
while at the same time collecting money from
UNILORIN academics in the name of ASUU
without remitting same to the Union.
Ogunyemi who accused Oloyede of nepotism
said: "As VC of UNILORIN, the system was
manipulated to favour his son and daughter and
within weeks, gave them awards for overseas
training despite explicit regulations against the
practice."
He also said that in May 2012, Professor Oloyede
as VC, suddenly doubled the amount of pension
being deducted from UNILORIN staff under the
pretext that the deductions were not enough,
adding that this was in contravention of the
Pensions Reform Act which prescribed 7,5 per
cent.
The ASUU President said: "The above represent
some of the reasons why the Union is appalled
that Oloyede has been offered an appointment to
head the Joint Admissions and Matriculation
Board.
"The Union has resolved to lodge an official
complaint with the appropriate authorities and to
demand investigation into the activities of
Oloyede while in office as VC of UNILORIN.

One unfortunate night, a gang of robbers came to our house and requested our money and other valuables. After collecting what they could, they gave me a gun and ordered me to shoot my husband or else I'll be shot. I collected the gun, pointed it at my husband but I hesitated. I thought about what my husband and I have experienced together; how we both suffered to be where we are today and how much I loved him. I couldn't just bring myself to kill him. I handed the gun back and said: “I am sorry I can’t do this". The boss of the robbers silently grabbed the gun from me and passed it on to my husband with the same order. Just then, something unbelievable happened. My husband collected the gun without any hesitation; he pointed the gun at me and pulled the trigger. As fate would have it, the gun had no bullets in it. The robbers collected their gun and walked out of the house laughing hysterically. I stood there in utmost shock that my husband could do such a thing. QUESTIONS FOR DISCUSSION 1. If you were the wife, what would be your reaction towards your husband? 2. If you were the husband, what explanation would you give to your wife? 3. If you were invited to resolve the issue between this couple, what advice would you give? |

Governor Idris Wada of Kogi on Tuesday removed 15 chairmen of local governments from office for defecting to the rival All Progressives Congress (APC). This is contained in a statement issued in Lokoja and signed by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Local Governments and Chieftaincy Affairs, James Adedoyin in Lokoja. The statement cited section 20 sub section ( 1) and section 36 sub section 1 (d) of Kogi State Local Government Law 2000 as amended to back the action. It explained that the sacked chairmen can no longer remain in office having decamped from the Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP) that sponsored them. Some of the affected council chairmen include that of Lokoja, Ogori-Magongo, Idah, Adavi, Ankpa, Okehi, Bassa, Yagba East, Yagba West and Okene among others. They defected to the APC during the grand finale of its governorship campaign held in Lokoja on November 18. The statement warned the sacked council chairmen to stay away from their offices, directing the vice chairmen or the council leaders to take over the affairs of the affected councils as may be appropriate. The governor said the handing and taking over should be completed by Wednesday Nov. 25, the statement said. One of the grounds for their defection was the refusal of Mr. Wada to implement a decision of the Court of Appeal in Abuja on Oct 29 that nullified the removal of the elected chairmen from office. They were removed from office based on the order of a Kogi State High Court sitting in Koton Karfe which ruled that the election of May 4, 2013 which brought them into office was faulty. Relying on the judgment, the Kogi State Government asked the chairmen and councillors to vacate office but the affected officials approached the Appeal Court which set aside the ruling and declared that they resume immediately. The Kogi state government refused to give effect to the ruling until Nov. 23. The Senate on Tuesday mandated its committee on Education to invite the leadership of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) over its controversial admission policy. The upper chamber also asked JAMB to increase the validity of its results from one to three years to reduce the number of yearly applicants. Senate asked its committee on Education to inquire into the circumstances surrounding the new policy including allegations of favouritism and to review the power of JAMB in relation to admission. It urged the body to consult widely with Parents Teachers Association, Academic Staff Union of Universities and other stakeholders in the education sector with a view to coming up with a friendlier, holistic, comprehensive and sustainable admission policy. This followed the adoption of a motion on “JAMB’s new admission policy” sponsored by Senator Joshua Lidani (Gombe South) and seven others. Lidani in his lead debate reminded the Senate that JAMB is a Board created by an Act of the National Assembly in 1989 to administer a centralized admission system for universities, polytechnics and colleges of education in the country. He noted that by Section 5(1)(C)111 of the JAMB’s Act 2004, the functions of the Board among other things, is the general control of the conduct of matriculation examinations for admission into all universities, polytechnics and colleges of education and also include the placement of suitably qualified candidates in the tertiary institutions having taken into account, the preferences expressed of otherwise indicated by candidates for certain tertiary institutions and courses. The lawmaker said he is aware that JAMB at its Combined Policy Meeting held on July 14, 2015 in Abuja, announced the adoption of a policy whereby candidates of universities with surplus applicants for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) are reassigned to other universities with lower number of candidates than their capacities. Lidani said he is concerned that following the announcement of the new policy, the Board was faced with a series of protests by parents, candidates and some Organizations of Tutorial School Operators of Nigeria over the new admission policy. The lawmaker also said that the new policy runs contrary to the letters and spirit of Section 5(1) ©111 of the JAMB Act which requires the Board to take into account preferences of the candidates in their choice of schools. http://thenationonlineng.net/senate-summons-jamb-registrar-over-admission-policy/ |
