The recent surge in insecurity in Anambra State has left many residents living in fear. The once peaceful state has been plagued by a series of kidnappings, armed robberies, and communal clashes, leaving many to wonder if the government is doing enough to address the situation.

One man who has been vocal about the issue is Rev. Fr. Ebube Muonso, a renowned cleric who has been advocating for the rights of the people. Fr. Muonso has been sounding the alarm on the rising tide of insecurity in the state, but his cries for help seem to be falling on deaf ears.

Despite his efforts, the government has been slow to respond, leaving many to wonder if they are taking the situation seriously. The people of Anambra are beginning to lose faith in their leaders, and it's easy to see why.

Fr. Muonso's warnings have been specific and detailed, citing instances of kidnappings and armed robberies that have gone unchecked. He has also highlighted the lack of adequate security presence in many parts of the state, leaving residents vulnerable to attacks.

The cleric's concerns are not just about the immediate safety of the people but also about the long-term consequences of inaction. He has warned that if the situation is not addressed, it could lead to a breakdown in law and order, with devastating consequences for the state.

Despite the gravity of the situation, the government's response has been lukewarm at best. Instead of taking concrete steps to address the issue, they have resorted to accusing Fr. Muonso of politicizing the issue.

But Fr. Muonso remains undeterred. He has continued to speak out against insecurity, using his platform to amplify the voices of the marginalized. His bravery and conviction are an inspiration to many, and his message is clear: the people of Anambra deserve better.

As the situation continues to deteriorate, it's clear that something needs to be done. The government must take concrete steps to address the issue of insecurity, and they must do it now. The people of Anambra are running out of patience, and they will not be silenced.

Fr. Muonso's cry for help is a wake-up call that cannot be ignored. It's time for the government to listen to the people and take action. The future of Anambra depends on it.

The Spiritual Director, Holy Ghost Adoration Ministry Uke, Anambra state, Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Obimma (Ebube muonso) has urged governor Chukwuma Soludo to address the security condition or resign for someone else to address it.

Obimma, in a new year message for the 2025, described the condition of security in Anambra State as hurriable, noting that urgent action was needed as people die on daily basis owing to insecurity.

"Insecurity in Anambra State is hurriable. And our governor must sit up. He can't subject the masses to jeopardy. He is the Chief security officer of the State. He can't be passive. Urgent action must be taken as people are dying everyday. I cannot be silent again. The heaven is not happy. The Holy Spirit is not happy.

" As you can see, people are dying everyday and he is not doing anything. He should do the needful. It is a hurriable situation. The situation is getting out of hand. I believe he collects security votes. Let him use it now to address the State security situation. Anambra State is turning to darkness under his administration.

"This is not time of using his media warriors to blow his trumpets. Whatever that worth doing is worth doing well. In all we do, we must remember that judgement day is coming. I do not need anything from him just for him to address the general well-being of the people. As a governor of Anambra State, he must come out because we voted for him to turn Anambra to Dubai as he promised."

The priest, however, appealed to some prominent individuals in the State to stop waiting for the government and convoke a security summit to proffer lasting solutions to ugly incident.

"Our prominent individuals like Obi Cubana, Obijackson, Val Ozoigbo, Sen. Victor Umeh, Ada Umeoji, Arthur Eze n'ukpo, Flavour, among others are needed in this situation. Weak men run away when there is trouble. But strong men stay alone. They can come together now and contribute resources towards addressing the security situation in the State," he added.

"For they who live in the shadows of the past, shall remain in hurt, will make no mark in the present, and have no defined future. They who live in delusions of the future without visibly identifying pathways shall remain lost, oblivious of the present, and achieve no progress. True progress and productivity can only emerge by living in the now," says Emeka Odibe, a prominent social analyst.

Odibe argues that power and progress are derived from two primary sources:

. Natural Power – inherent in all existing matter, activated only by external factors.

. The Human Will – a product of thoughts and beliefs.

He highlights that the greatest power lies in Universal Oneness, emphasizing that God is manifested in the excellence of human deeds.

He calls for a shift from divisive religious ideologies to unity-driven principles of peace and love.

Religion and Governance: A Call for Change

Odibe critiques the weaponization of religion, stating:
"Religion was meant to uphold spirituality and promote morality, but it has been infiltrated and used to divide, deceive, and extort."

He points out how ego and classism, perpetuated by patriarchal and discriminatory systems, fuel societal divisions. Using Nigeria as a case study, Odibe underscores the adverse effects of imported religious ideologies that objectify women and perpetuate systemic oppression.

Protests and Bad Governance

Reflecting on Nigeria's socio-political struggles, Odibe asserts that protests and strikes are reactive measures that fail to create lasting change. He notes:
"True change stems from intelligent, calculated, proactive moves starting at the grassroots level."

Odibe critiques societal complicity in corruption, citing examples of moral decay in schools, where lecturers exploit students for grades, and a culture that prioritizes entertainment over education.

Education as the Bedrock of Progress

For Nigeria to thrive, Odibe emphasizes the importance of education, stating:
"Competence entails the acquisition and right application of technical knowledge. Yet, in Nigeria, Big Brother housemates receive more recognition and rewards than first-class graduates."

He advocates for structural reforms in education, urging institutions to adopt measures that promote transparency and fairness. He proposes solutions such as duplicating answer sheets for students and encouraging proactive engagement in academic and social settings.

National Oneness: The Way Forward

To achieve progress, Odibe calls for absolute national oneness, where power belongs to the people. He challenges Nigerians to purge divisive factors like age, gender, religion, tribe, and class, focusing instead on collective growth and development.

"A nation that prioritizes competence over division will thrive," he asserts. "When seeking medical help, we prioritize the best hands, irrespective of their background. This mindset should guide our national decisions."

Rebuilding from the Grassroots

Odibe stresses the importance of family and societal structures in fostering national unity. He proposes integrating financial and emotional stability into the foundation of relationships to build strong families that contribute to societal progress.

"Nigeria's governance model is a colonial handover," he notes. "To fix our nation, we must address issues at the societal level, creating proactive, inclusive strategies that empower every citizen."

A Challenge to Leaders

Concluding his analysis, Odibe challenges influential figures in entertainment and politics to invest in projects that promote national growth. He emphasizes the power of storytelling and collaboration in shaping a brighter future for Nigeria.

"The solution lies in us," Odibe concludes. "If we embrace unity, education, and accountability, we can rebuild our nation and secure a progressive future for generations to come."

Sir Patrick Nnaemeka Ubajaka also referred to as Ike Nnewi is aspiring to represent Anambra South Senatorial District in the Senate on the platform of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

Sir Patrick Ubajaka, a human rights activist and great philanthropist, on Thursday said his plan to contest for a Senatorial seat in 2025 was borne out of his zeal to give the people the dividends of democracy.

Sir Ubajaka told the Hardcore News of Nigeria (HN) in Nnewi that citizens who had hoped for a better life since the return of democratic rule in Nigeria were disappointed with the present inability of legislators to work effectively with Executive and Judicial branches of Government

Hardcore News reports that Ubajaka was aspiring to represent Anambra South Senatorial District in the Senate on the platform of APGA. 

“We are very much disappointed with the way selfishness have destroyed our economy, extinguished our hopes and sunk this country into debt and growing economic challenges.

“Our own political movement is to bring the pains of the people into the halls of parliament and do all that is necessary to address and eliminate those pains.

“With the levers of power; we hope to demonstrate those ideas, those ideals to which we hold firmly.

“We also hope that with power, we can connect our people to their own resources; we can end fraudulent politics, injustice and deception that has continued unfortunately to find home in our politics today.

"I have been in APGA since the inception of the party. My training as a political scientist has taught me that politics becomes a devious and selfish business in the absence of a sound ideological foundation. Ideology is the connecting bond for hitherto strangers who come together to forge a common front for collective good. APGA is an ideological party founded on the basic principles of “leaving no one behind”. It is welfarist in a way, only that it encourages productive and responsible citizenship." He said

Ubajaka said if elected, he would make a huge difference in the way politicians behaved in the country. He said that APGA is the best political party with the political will to change the ugly situation of things in the country.

As the festive season arrives in all its frenzy, the essence of security in our society can not be overstated. This period is synonymous with heightened social and economic activities, increased human mobility, and a surge in celebratory events. While these dynamics foster joy and communal bonding, they also present unique security challenges that demand proactive measures.

It is therefore reassuring that the recent release of the Crime Experience and Security Perception Survey (CESPS) by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has brought much-needed positive news to the South East region of Nigeria. The data reveals a significant decline in crime rates, positioning the region as the safest in the country this year. This is, no doubt, an affirmation of the concerted efforts of federal government, security agencies, state governments, and community leaders.

According to the NBS report, the North West recorded the highest crime rate with 14 million cases, followed by the North Central, which stood at 8.8 million incidents. The South East had the lowest occurrence of household crimes, with 6.1 million cases. The data made available showed South West with 6.9m, South South with 7.7m, and North East with 7.9m, respectively.

While the entire South East region has witnessed a notable improvement in security, Anambra State stands out as an exemplar of positive development in this regard. With the dynamic leadership of Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, the state has experienced a comparative reduction in crime rates as against what used to be the norm in recent years.

The Governor's relentless commitment to enhancing security has yielded tangible results. By bolstering the capacity of security agencies, investing in advanced security infrastructure, and promoting community partnerships, Governor Soludo's administration has created a safer environment for Ndi Anambra.

A few days ago, Governor Soludo read the riot act to the criminals, giving them another two months of amnesty from January to February 2025. Also, with the provision of about 200 security vehicles and the upcoming launch of Operation "Udo Ga Achi," it will surely be hell for criminals in whatever guise in Anambra State

All these proactive actions by Governor Soludo will not only restore peace and stability to the state but will also boost business activities by stimulating economic growth. Interestingly, the occasional cult-related crimes that usually occur will also be promptly dealt with.

Now that the Christmas season is here, Ndi Anambra and Ndigbo worldwide can now look forward to coming home to celebrate with their loved ones without fear. Ultimately, the festive season should be a time of joy, peace, and togetherness. With collective vigilance and sustained commitment, we can safeguard lives and property, ensuring that the season is truly festive for everyone. Security is not just a necessity; it is a shared responsibility.

The Anambra State Government has expressed deep grief on the tragic loss of lives in the stampede that occurred during a rice-sharing event in Okija town in Ihiala Local Government Area of the state on Saturday.

In his expression of sympathy, Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR, extends his deepest condolences to the families of the deceased, especially the women, the elderly, pregnant, nursing mothers and children who lost their lives in this unfortunate incident.

According to available information, the State Government acknowledged that the Obi Jackson Foundation, led by Chief Ernest Obiejesi, had organised the event with the noble intention of sharing relief materials with less privileged members of the community during this festive season. However, the resulting tragedy underscores the urgent need for a more structured and safer approach to distributing such assistance.

The Anambra State Government in a prompt action on the incident has initiated a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the stampede. The government will work closely with relevant agencies to determine the root causes of this unfortunate event and ensure that any negligence or lapses in safety protocols are duly addressed.

Meanwhile, the State Government has also implored all well-meaning individuals and organisations engaged in charitable activities to prioritise the safety and well-being of beneficiaries.

It is strongly advised that future distributions of relief materials be conducted in a more organised and decentralised manner, with adequate crowd control measures in place. This may include establishing multiple distribution points within the community to reduce overcrowding at a single location; implementing a system to prioritise vulnerable groups such as the elderly, pregnant women, children and people with disabilities; employing trained personnel to manage crowds, ensure orderly queues, and provide assistance to those in need; and conducting public awareness campaigns to educate the public on safety protocols during such events.

The Government of Anambra State has said plans are underway for the introduction of a more progressive tax system in 2025 to ensure equitable distribution of tax burden in the State.

Senior Special Assistant to Governor Chukwuma Soludo on IGR, Mrs Oyeka Amara Kate, disclosed this during stakeholders meeting to validate research activity carried out in (21) major markets across the three senatorial zones of the state. 

Ikengaonline reports that the research was carried out under the Tax for Service Project implemented by Tax Justice and Governance Platform (TJ&GP), Anambra State, in collaboration with the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre, (CISLAC) with funding support from Oxfam Nigeria.

Mrs Oyeka, who addressed stakeholders at the event stated that the target is to reduce the tax burden on low-income traders while increasing taxes for high-income individuals in Anambra markets.

She said the system will promote fairness and equity. She also said the move is expected to generate more revenue while also reducing poverty and inequality in the state.

According to her, "We have plans to correct the imbalance in the system of tax payment. In practice today, petty traders and the rich importers pay the same amount. 

"In 2025, we expect to do things differently, and by then, we must have done proper enumeration and gotten proper statistics of everybody. We look at progressive tax where if you earn more, you pay more. It will be according to what you earn."

Continuing, she said: "Part of the things we want to do in 2025 is to make sure that our officials are identified in terms of how they appear, their ID cards, and others. People need to know exactly who our tax enforcers are and what they look like.

"Also, part of what we must ensure to intensify and to achieve in 2025 is to look for a more secure way for people to pay their tax. Where we are today is because of leakages. If the leakages were blocked immensely, we could have recorded three times what we had achieved."

The SSA called for increased partnership and collaboration of all stakeholders towards ensuring that the state gets what is due to it monthly and to be at par or even surpassed other state's revenue achievements. 

"We have to be willing to do what other states are doing. If you want our revenue to be stable or move upwards. Every stakeholder must be involved to achieve results in Anambra. Revenue generation is not a one-man thing but a collective responsibility. 

"We have noticed that the more educated our people are on tax matters, the more receptive they become to tax compliance. We have introduced a tax quiz around secondary schools and that will help us in the future."

Oyeka emphasized the importance of formalizing businesses in Anambra State, stating that over 70% of businesses in the state are informal. She cited Lagos State as an example, where over 70% of total collections come from structured organizations, generating around N55 billion from payee alone out of N900 billion in revenue. 

Earlier, Executive Director Social and Integral Development Center (SIDEC), Mrs Ugochi Ehiahuruike, emphasized that the  Tax for Service Project aims to bridge the gap between taxpayers and service providers, fostering transparency, accountability, and improved public trust in governance structures.

Ehiahuruike said "We gather to present and validate the research findings on the implementation of the Tax for Service Project in Anambra State. The research findings will guide strategic interventions to improve tax compliance and public service outcomes."

Presenting the research findings, Tax Consultant, Dr David Agu, attributed the poor IGR status of the state to the leakages in the revenue generation system. 

"Huge percent of the revenue generated from markets are diverted into private pockets. If we can improve on the leakages and sensitize our people to be using USSD code to pay their taxes, Anambra would achieve more," Dr Agu said.

In their reactions, stakeholders, including representatives of Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), private sector leaders, civil society actors, and community leaders, called on the government to take decisive action. 

They urged the government to put an end to the activities of fake revenue agents, which are contributing to multiple taxation in markets. They also advocated for the effective utilization of revenues generated within the state to benefit all citizens.

The Executive Chairman, Anambra State Universal Basic Education Board (ASUBEB), Awka, Dr. Vera Nwadinobi has issued a commendation letter to the Headteacher, Community Model Primary School, Akabor Ojoto, Idemili South Council Area, Mrs Nnenna Edoziobi for teaching pupils broom making and other skills.

Nwadinobi, while presenting the commendation at carol of nine lessons held by the organisation at Awka, described the Headteacher as distinguished leader among her contemporaries, even as she recalled that six of her colleagues across the State were demoted two weeks ago over pecuniary acts.

"At a time when some school Heads are engaging in all manner of pecuniary acts to impose illegal levies on learners thereby sabotaging the free education policy of governor Chukwuma Soludo, she was looking inwards to engage her pupils in practical learning of handcrafts and other skills.

"We were impressed with what we saw her pupils doing with their hands in basket and broom making, and confectionery such as chin chin and burns, liquid soap and insecticide which the children are already imbibing.

"We are encouraging all the school Heads to promote skill acquisition, creativity, and reading culture in schools to enhance cognitive, affective and psychomotor domains of teaching and learning experiences," she re-emphasised.

Responding, the beneficiary, Mrs Nnenna Edoziobi praised God for finding her worthy of the commendation, and promised not to relent in doing all she could in making the pupils under her care gain the best of formation.

The front-line governorship aspirant of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in Anambra State 2025 poll, Sir Paul Chukwuma has urged the State governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo to save lives of the populace by investing in security of lives and property in concomitant with infrastructure.

According to Chukwuma, roads and bridges should be built for the living not the dead, hence the needs for the governor to prioritising human lives over infrastructural development.

The industrialist stated this in a statement signed by his campaign spokesman, Mr James Eze, while reaching to death of a senior lecturer from Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Dr Osita Chinedu. Chinedu was murdered at Awka last Monday night by suspected car syndicate following a series of killings in the State.

He observed that civilization and human progress had very little to do with building bridges and other physical infrastructure and much more to do with the value a society places on the life of an individual.

"Human beings are the agents of civilization and should be prioritized over physical development. Every responsible government should know this. Roads and bridges are for the living, not the dead. The sooner we realise this, the better for us all, because maybe the huge security votes drawn from the coffers of Anambra State shall finally be invested in securing public safety for all.

"We should all be worried at the ease with which criminals carry out their operations in our dear state. How could violent criminals gun down a citizen at the strategically busy Aroma Junction in the heart of Awka and escape without any challenge at all? Is that not a blow to our pride as a decent people?

"I'm traumatised by the tragic death of that young man (Dr Osita Chinedu) who carried not only the hopes of his family but the dreams of his country. The death of any human being diminishes me, but the death of a teacher is a colossal loss to humanity. He was a brilliant young man who had shown a great promise as a scholar of note and whose talent would have enriched the academia had he not been cut down in his prime.

Elders of Obinagu Achalla village, Enugwu-Agidi community in Njikoka Local Government Area (LGA), Anambra state, have vowed to take some natives to shrine over refusal to accept peaceful resolution of 70 years old communal land dispute.

The elders, whose village had been in court with neighbouring Ezinano village, Awka, Awka South LGA since 1954 over ownership of Agu Nawgu land, said they were ready to make peace and would not allow anyone to stop such a move.

Speaking at Enugwu-Agidi, on Sunday, a 98-year-old man, Ichie Wilson Okeofor, said they decided to negotiate for peace with their neighbour because they have suffered enough over the contentious land.

"We are no longer interested in shooting and maiming over land matter but has finally wish to unite with Awka people. Those people that are trying to thwart this peace initiative know themselves in the community and they gain much through this selfish approach," he stated.

Also speaking, Ozo Ozoemena Obiora Okeke, aged 72, who said he was once abducted by herdsmen, vowed that "Those people that don't want this peace initiative to stand may face severe consequences when we decide to drag them to Alusi shrine."

On his part, Elder Cyprian Odogwu, aged 89, urged all sections of the community to support the move because even a security expert from Ezinano, Ozo Jeff Nweke, had told them that the land worth no reason to waste life, thereby showing that their move was worthwhile.

Some youths and women of the village interviewed unanimously supported the peace move, praying for wisdom to end the crisis that have led to economic stagnation and destruction of properties worth million of naira in the area.

APC will takeover Anambra in 2025 without force, Chukwuma

The governorship aspirant of All Progressive Congress (APC) in Anambra State 2025 poll, Sir Paul Chukwuma, on Saturday, said he was sure his party would takeover the State in a free, fair and credible poll.

Chukwuma, who disclosed this at breakfast meeting with Journalists at Umueri, Anambra East Local Government Area, revealed that APC has embarked on grassroots campaigns geared towards mobilising members and securing the people mandates.

According to him, with interface with grassroots, the party has learnt that the populace have lost interest and confidence on governor Chukwuma Soludo's APGA led administration having failed to rejig the system for the betterment of all.

" If things continues this way, we may never have a system in Anambra. Oir economy has failed. The governance, education...have failed. We are in trouble in Anambra State. We are becoming as failed State. What we are experiencing now is not good to talk about. We are trying to get back to the grassroots.

"APC mandate is to interface with our people. We are not going to take power by force. But we are having interface with people. We have set an agenda to get closer to the people, engage with them on key issues and find lasting solutions to their needs.

"People are no longer going to farm due to fear of kidnappers. The economy is not working. We will take over and liberate Anambra State and hand it over to ndị Anambra. Come next year, APC will win Anambra State convincely," he added.

He further called for stakeholders intervention in addressing the insecurity in Anambra State, assuring that security of lives and properties would improve the State economy by bringing foreign and encouraging local investors, including entrepreneurs and businesses to thrive.

"Anambra State is turning into a war zone under Soludo's administration. It is very unfortunate that we have a government in state that finds it difficult to attend to our needs. The facts are there that govt is not doing anything to tackle it. We need to speak out. It is not enough to tell people to come out on Mondays when you are not doing anything to address the insecurity. The stakeholders must rise up to their expectations," he added.

On political controversies introduced by opposition politicians and others following appointment of two chieftains of All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) into a federal ministry and institution, Sir Chukwuma waved it unsubstantiated fact.

Tinubu had approved appointment of Ambassador Bianca Ojukwu, a life board member of APGA, as Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, and the immediate past Commissioner for Anambra State Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning, Mr Mark Okoye as Chief Executive Officer/Managing Director, South East Development Commission.

The appointment has sparked controversy in Anambra State with many arguing that President Tinubu was more comfortable with the State ruling APGA than APC, and would likely support governor Chukwuma Soludo's reelection in 2025 against his party (APC).

But Chukwuma at a media parley with journalists in his country-home in Umueri, Amambra East Local Government Area (LGA), Anambra State, on Saturday, dismissed such allegations, insisting that Tinubu was playing the role of a father, a democrat in the principle of federal character and love to deliver the dividends of democracy using credible, qualified and resourceful personalities across the federation.

According to him, appointing people from across political divides would not also make the President or the appointees to work against the APC because he remains the leader of the country and committed towards providing security of life and property, and enabling environment for all to thrive.

"There was a time people were alleging that the President and APC hates the Southeast. But today, reverse is the case as president is appointing credible persons from Anambra State and other parts of Southeast to head ministries, agencies and parastals.

"So, the President should be commended for appointing our credible people in his cabinet. He is not only appointing APGA members as some persons alleged. He has appointed other qualified APC members and none politicians into key positions in his cabinet. We commend him for that, and will support him in all he is doing for peace and development of Anambra and Nigeria," he stated.

Legal expert and Head, Department of Public Law, Paul's University, Awka, Anambra State, Dr Chibuike Okafo has suggested the need for regulation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) usage in Nigeria.

According to Okafo, although AI is good and trends, there was need to regulate it usage especially among law students so as to enable them become independent and productive.

Okafo, who stated this in interview at maiden Dinner and Award ceremony of the Law Students Association (LAWSA) of the Paul University, noted that AI could make law students to run foul to privacy, copyright and others.

The also featured unveiling of Faculty Journal, lecture, awards presentation, LAWSA pageantry, among others.

He further stressed that legal practitioners ought not to rely on AI because they were expected to be independent, open minded and resourceful, and urged students of law to minimise usage of it so as to excel in the profession upon graduation.

The legal practitioner, who believed that the knowledge of the law would make one to travel and carryon activities with ease.

Delivering a lecture, a legal luminary and Principal Partner, the Law Zoomers, Barrister Amaka Ezeno urged students to refrain from over dependence on Artificial Intelligence (AI), noting that it could turn them into lazy, unproductive and unprofessional.

Ezeno, who argued that AI tools have made many students lazy and uninterested in extensive search for information and knowledge despite that the materials were often inaccurate, prone to errors and biases.

"The use of AI even though highly recommended can sometimes be misleading. AI has cut down the creative aspect of research. It has made students lazy both in research and training and impacts negatively on their character."

"As law students, we must be able to verify what we get from such a platform, think critically and analytically, and evaluate the credibility and reliability. Easily relying on AI-generated content can hinder your ability to develop these essential skills.

"A lawyer who relies excessively on AI-generated materials may end up providing substandard legal services, which can damage reputation and lead to legal and professional consequences," she recommended.

Also speaking, the Vice-Chancellor, Paul's University, Awka, Reverend Professor Obiora Nwosu, noted that AI in actual sense was not intelligent as it regurgitates what it was fed by individuals who are mostly not professionals.

In a remark, Chairman of the occasion, Barr Nnamdi Anagor commended the Paul University law faculty for the initiative,  noting that the theme was apt and timely.

Earlier, the Dean of the Faculty, Prof Carol Arinze-Umeobi, described the event as an annual get together aimed at bringing the students and faculty members to interact with experts, while promoting culture of intellectual discourse, critical thinking, and academic excellence.

Barrister Amara Muojeke, MCArb, has been sworn in as the new Chairperson, International Federation of Women Lawyers, FIDA Nigeria, Anambra State Branch.

She is an Assistant Chief State Counsel, Anambra State Ministry of Justice Awka, and heads the Nigeria Bar Association, NBA, Women Forum, Anambra State.

Other members of the new executive body were Lauretta Ikwuka - Vice Chairperson, His Worship, Maria Anyabolu – Secretary, Sylvia Ogbuagu - Assistant Secretary, A. C. Peters - Financial Secretary, Chioma Okolo – Treasurer, Chinelo Akorah - Publicity Secretary, Ginikachukwu Olisa - Welfare Secretary.

In her address at the event held at FIDA office in Awka, Barrister Muojeke assured that she and her team will spare no effort in upholding the ideals and principles of FIDA in their service to humanity.

She noted that “FIDA Anambra has consistently been at the forefront of advancing the rights and welfare of women and children in the state” by providing free legal representation to victims of gender-based violence and organizing community outreaches, thereby giving human face to the principles members hold dear.
“Our legal aid services, sensitization campaigns, and advocacy programs have left indelible marks in various communities across Anambra State. We have championed causes that uplift the marginalized, offered hope to the hopeless, and lent our voices to the voiceless”.

The new Anambra FIDA Chairperson however noted that the scope of the challenges requires collaboration in order to reach people at the grassroots, reason the group is seeking active partnerships with the government, non-governmental organizations, civil society groups and other stakeholders.
“Together, we can provide not just legal assistance, but also critical support services such as shelter, rehabilitation, and empowerment programs. This synergy is essential for addressing the complex needs of the vulnerable in our society”.

To ensure effective execution of FIDA’s programs across Anambra State, Barrister Muojeke announced the appointment of Lauretta Ikwuka – Onitsha, H/W Maria Anyabolu – Onitsha, Lizzy Umeh – Awka, Chinelo Akorah – Awka, Dr. Modesta Muoneke – Nnewi, and Ada Egwu Samuel – Nnewi into the Programs Committee of the group.
“These capable women will organize activities for the United Nations international celebrations in their respective cities and surrounding environments. FIDA Anambra will provide the necessary IEC materials and other support to ensure the success of these programs”.

For the FIDA Week 2025, Barrister Muojeke announced the appointment of Chioma Okolo Esq. as the Chairperson; who will be responsible for appointing her committee members and organizing the event.

Describing “Litigation Committee” as a vital arm of FIDA in Anambra, Barrister Muojeke announced that it will be chaired by Lauretta Ikwuka Esq., MCArb; who will later appoint other members of the committee.

She added that the group under her leadership will continue to recognize the invaluable contributions of senior FIDA members, and will actively involve and encourage their participation in all FIDA activities, while embarking on robust membership drives to increase capacity and ensure the sustainability of FIDA Anambra’s impact.

Earlier in their remarks, a Professor of Law, former Anambra FIDA Chairperson and Chairperson of the Election Committee that produced the Muojeke-led exco, Barrister Mrs Ogugua Ikpeze, another former FIDA Chairperson in the state, Barrister Mrs Chineze Obianyo, and another member of the Election Committee, Barrister Lizzy Umeh, charged the new executive members to continue to consolidate on the achievements of pastor leaders of the association, even as they called for more advocacy on the activities of the group.

Community leaders in Anambra State, on Thursday, reaffirmed commitment towards enhancing the people with disabilities (PWDs) access to public buildings and justice.

The stakeholders, who included landlords, traditional rulers, Presidents general, church leaders, women leaders and others also agreed to provide enabling environment for PWDs to thrive in their careers, while living a normal lives.

They reached the agreement at a one day awareness workshops with religious, community leaders and PWDs cluster heads on PWDs inclusion and accessibility of public infrastructure and services held in Awka, the Anambra State capital.

The workshop organised by the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD), sponsored by Rule of Law and Anti-corruption (RoLAC) programme, a European Union funded programme implemented by International IDEA, was aimed at increasing awareness about the need for accessible buildings and transportation for PWDs.

Speaking at the event, the State Chairman, Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), Bishop Moses Ezedebego, said there was need for advocacy visits to stakeholders, including different churches, community leaders and others to get them informed of the Anambra State 2018 Disability Rights Law.

Ezedebego, who said he would fix a date for all the church leaders from 21 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and wards to inform them about the laws and implementation strategies.

Also speaking, representative of Anambra State Traditional Rulers Council and monarch of Amanuke, Awka North Local Government Area (LGA), HRH Igwe Alphonsus Ezebuilo, assured readiness to assist in disseminating information of disability inclusion in society.

Ezebuilo, who noted that one of his most talented cabinet members is a PWDs, hinted that he would not relent in providing access to infrastructure and others to their members always.

Also speaking, the National Vice President, Anambra State Association of Town Unions (ASATU), Chief Ikechukwu Offorkansi, said there was need for all stakeholders to rally round in disseminating the information about the Anambra State Disability Rights Law (2018).

Offorkansi, who posited that there was need to address more townhall meetings to educate the populace, assured that everyone alive could do anything humanely possible so far they were mentally stable irrespective of their physical appearance.

The Public Relations Officer, Anambra State Disability Commission, Miss Chidimma Ajemba, while reading expectations of the programme, noted that PWDs expected public buildings, streets and transportation systems to be fully accessible through construction of ramps, elevators, wider doorways, tactile paving and spaces for wheelchairs or mobility aids.

"Government and urban planners should ensure that all new infrastructure complies with accessibility standards. Transport agencies need to make vehicles and stations accessible. Private sector such as malls and theatres should prioritise accessibility as part of their design.

"We expect government and service websites to follow accessibility guidelines (web content accessibility guidelines). This includes screen-reader compatibility, voice recognition, easy navigation and subtitle options for videos. Public services should be accessible through technologies that assist PWDs such as screen readers, text-to-speech applications or sign language interpreters for virtual interactions.

"We expect inclusive education systems where the physical and digital infrastructure, curriculum and teaching methods cater to diverse needs such as accessible classrooms, special education resources, and sign language interpreters. Health and social services, legal framework and others need to be strengthened," she added.

In a welcome address, the Anambra State Chairman, JONAPWD, Comrade Ugochukwu Okeke, said the event was a call for a collective responsibility to ensure that all members of the society were provided with opportunities to live lives with dignity, independence and equal opportunities.

Okeke noted that "This is not only a moral duty but also a legal and social one. PWDs represent a significant and valuable portion of our society, yet they are often faced with barriers both physical and societal that prevent them from fully participating in public life.

"We are here to discuss practical ways we can create more accessible environments for persons with disabilities. This includes ensuring that our places of worship, schools, health centres, public transportation, and government buildings are accessible to all without exception. Accessible goes beyond ramps and elevators.

"It means ensuring that information is available in accessible formats, that service providers are trained to understand the needs of persons with disabilities, and that the attitudes of our community members reflect kindness, respect and inclusion.

"But there is more to inclusion than just infrastructure. We must foster a culture of inclusion. Our communities must be places where PWDs are not seen as recipients if charity but as equals in every sense. They should be involved in every facet of life at work, school, community, recreational activities and spiritual spaces.

" We are all enriched by the diversity of experiences, perspectives, and talents that PWDs bring to our communities. Together, we have the power to change the narrative surrounding PWDs. We can advocate for policies that promote accessibility, and we can raise awareness of the importance of inclusion.

"Through education, dialogue and action, we can build communities that truly embrace every individual regardless of ability and ensure that everyone has access to the opportunities and services they need to thrive. I encourage you to incorporate messages of inclusion into your teachings, to promote accessibility in the physical spaces you oversee, and to provide support for persons with disabilities within your congregations."

Earlier in a remark, the State Coordinator, RoLAC, Dr Josephine Onah, explained that the programme was among their objectives to enhance access to justice to the PWDs.

According to her, PWDs need equal access to justice and environment, especially public buildings as contained in Anambra State Disability Rights Law 2018 which was adapted from the United Nations charter.

"We come to discuss on issues that bother on humanity, as signatory to UN on given equal opportunity to everyone to thrive and be part of the society. We are here to preach inclusions. PWDs do not need pitying but enabling environment to thrive," she stated.

"We are seeing you as key partners to make things work. This activity calls to mind what should be done for fully implementation of Anambra State Disability Rights law. It provided for what the traditional rulers should take cognisance to. What the landlord, community leaders and others should do.

"We want you to do the needful by providing the PWDs with enabling environment to live. We don't need you to give them help or pity but to provide them with enabling environment. When you do it, you will be able to accommodate everyone, and give access to everyone that work," she noted.

The Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD), Anambra State chapter, on Tuesday, lamented that most public structures in the State were still inaccessible to persons with disabilities (PWDs) despite existence of Disability Rights Law 2018.

The State JONAPWD Chairman, Comrade Ugochukwu Okeke, who stated this at 2024 commemoration of International day for PWDs celebrated in Awka under the theme 'Amplifying the Leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future,' decried over poor access and inclusion to them.

He, therefore, implored governor Chukwuma Soludo to consider making ongoing public institutions constructions such as Ekwueme square, Awka Fun City, and others accessible and friendly to PWDs.

"The inaccessibility of public structures and the transportation system remains a serious challenge that limits our active participation in society. The exclusion of our members from appointments and elective positions causes us sleepless nights, while the non-functionality of some rehabilitation centres where our members could be trained and empowered is a significant concern.

"It is, therefore, our collective responsibility to build a society that is inclusive and accommodating to the needs of persons with disabilities. This requires providing greater access to education, employment, healthcare, and other essential services, while also promoting a culture of respect, understanding and acceptance," he stated.

He recalled that PWDs had enjoyed improved access to healthcare, justice sector, governance and others through the support of Rule of Law and Anti-corruption (RoLAC) programme, a European Union programme currently implemented by International IDEA.

Okeke, who commended the Anambra State governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo for approving appointment of some of their staff and other policies, however, advocated for more in the spirit of inclusiveness.

Also speaking, the State Chairman, Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), Bishop Moses Ezedebego, represented by a member, Mr Mark Odogwu assured that they would commence building of ramps and others with a view to ensure that PWDs gain equal access to their institutions.

Ezedebego, represented by a member, Pastor Mark Odogwu, assured that they would commence building of ramps and others with a view to ensure that PWDs gain equal access to their church buildings in accordance to sections 23 and 26 of Anambra State Disability Rights law 2018.

The law, passed by Anambra State House of Assembly and assented to by former governor Willie Obiano also provided that all the public buildings built by government, organisations or individuals such as churches, hostels, tenancy homes, schools, markets and others must provide quick and free entrances to PWDs.

It also provided for inclusion and protection of the rights of persons with disabilities in all areas of live and society, including marriage, politics, religion, among others, while stipulating various ways to punish it violators without fear or favour.

Bishop Ezedebego, however, urged PWDs in Anambra State to refrain from self pity and explore all opportunities to develop and impact lives positively because according to him, there is no disability in God.

"God created a man as a spirit. He created us in His own image. Nobody is less human. You are only disable when you are poor in your mind or when you fail to do the needful. You must identify your God giving gifts, and explore available opportunities in your environment to impact lives positively.

"We will not allow you to be seen as beggars in our churches. You are our members. We will stop our congregation from isolating or discriminating against you. We will provide ramps to make our churches accessible. We will make it a law that all our churches must be accessible to persons with disabilities," he stated.

Also speaking, Engr. Sandra Chioma Okoye argued that no cluster of persons with disabilities is less human, because according to her, with the help of Technology such as phones, Artificial Intelligence and other software and hardware applications, they could do whatever the so-called able persons could do

She therefore charged PWDs to deepen or improve knowledge of digital technology so as to relate much better with society, improve access, productivity, employment and personal growth.

On his part, the immediate past State Chairman of JONAPWD, Mr Lawrence Nwanolue, hailed the association leadership for improvement in impacting knowledge and new ideas into their members for inclusion, growth and diversity.

Speaking at a panel discussion, a journalist, Comrade Lawrence Nwimo charged PWDs to seek elective, voluntary and appointed positions to gain insights, enhance opportunities and advocate for societal inclusion.

The panel which x-rayed benefits of amplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future, also had Miss Chidinma Ajemba, a Mandela Washington fellow; Ms Ncheta Nwanokwara of Anambra State Women with Disabilities; an educationist and leader of Anambra State Albinism, Mr Ben Orizu, among others.

The panelist advocated for full implementation of Anambra State 2018 disability rights law, urging private and public institutions to allow them access to their building structures, support to contest and win or get appointed into various leadership positions, among others.

Parents and players in Maureen Madu Kiddies Football Academy, Ozubulu in Ekwusigo Local Government Area (LGA), Anambra State, on Tuesday, staged a peaceful protest against brutality and refusal to investigate the atrocity the personnel meted at their wards and leader of the club.

Maureen Madu, an ex-Super Falcon's striker and internationally celebrated player of repute was in October 2024 handcuffed and brutalised by officers from Anti Cult Unit in zone 13 Ukpo, Anambra State. Officers also brutalised and wounded her and children who are team members and learners in the academy.

The protesters numbering over 100 stormed the Police headquarters at Amawbia, Awka South Local Government Area, to register their displeasure over the matter which left many kid players wounded and hospitalised for months.

Addressing the newsmen, the protesters lamented that the police had turned a deaf ear to their demands for justice since the day of the incident and only ordering them to report here and there without a recourse to the injuries and emotional damages sustained as a result of the man-inhumanity to man perpetrated by the personnel.

Also speaking, the Director of Maureen Madu kiddies football academy, Maruen Madu expressed worry over the delay to grant justice to the children, who according to her, heavily sustained injuries and other damages.

According to Madu, most of the children attacked during the invasion of the academy by the police were yet to recover their phones from the police, thereby denying them opportunities to communicate with their parents.

The damages, injuries, hospital bills and others sustained at course of this incident amounts to about ₦10 million. They have called on the Inspector General of Police to order investigation into the matter with a view to bring justice to the kiddies, while also demanding for ₦10 compensation so as to get the children going.

It would be recalled that personnel suspected to be operatives of Anti Cult Unit from zone 13 Ukpo invaded her academy, Maureen Madu Kiddies Football Academy, Ozubulu in Ekwusigo Local Government Area (LGA), brutalised players, smashed and seized their phones before taking them away in handcuffs.

She had said that a man registered his daughter in her academy for summer coaching but failed to provide her and later turned around to label allegations of armed gangsterism, attempted child trafficking and threat to life against her in a bid to evade his indebtedness.

"All I want is justice. This man who left his daughter with me for four months should prove his case or damages with apology. The police should exonerate itself by ensuring that those who invaded my academy and humiliated me and my players without investigation are made to face the consequences of their unprofessional conduct,” she said.

The Police in Anambra had promised to investigate the invasion of Maureen Madu Kiddies Football Academy but failed to do so since thereby prompting her to lead her team to protesting to the command and was asked to return to zone 13 Ukpo.

At course of the protest, the police, including the PPRO, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, who earlier called her to come to the command again had ignored her and drove out while his 2iC instructed Madu to visit the Ukpo to retake over the matter.

Madu expressed displeasure over the matter because the same police told her that the command headquarters had taken over the matter.

Anambra State Governor, Prof Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR, has expressed his administration's commitment to raising Anambra's digital tribe.

Governor Soludo stated this at the grand finale of the Anambra Innovation Week, 2024, held at the International Convention Centre, Awka.

The Governor stated that technology and innovation define Anambra's future, saying that technology is key to his administration's agenda.

"The importance of the event has been underscored.

"The full week-long event, signposts the importance we attach to this journey.

The Governor pointed out that Anambra is on a long journey, saying that the vision is to transform Anambra from a departure lounge to a destination point.

"We are building the African Dubai Taiwan. Think of our own Silicon valley.

"We are building a human capital that is productive at home and exportable abroad.

"I thank all of you who have competed from the 24 states in Nigeria. This will grow from strength to strength. "

The Governor added that Anambra remains as Nigeria's major commercial, logistics hub, as well as entertainment hub, emphasizing that his administration is deliberate about the drive to deepen technology and innovation across the state.

"Technology and innovation define Anambra's future. Technology is key"; the Governor added.

The Keynote Speaker and Co-Founder of AI in Nigeria, Ehia Ehabo who spoke on Driving Investment in Africa, through investment in technology, innovation and entrepreneurship, revealed that for every challenge in Africa, there are multiple opportunities, adding that the continent has a vibrant youth population to actualize it.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Innovation and Business Incubation whose Agency organised the Innovation week, Ms. Chinwe Okoli applauded the Governor for believing and driving the process.

"This is the first of its kind in Anambra state; holding a week-long event on innovation and technology.

"Soludo believes in technology. His administration has the mantra of "everything technology, technology everywhere," and he is deliberately building the ecosystem. "

Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Solo Chukwulobelu, Head of Service, Barr. Theodora Igwegbe, Chief of Staff to the Governor, Mr. Ernest Ezeajughi, tech gurus from AI, Meta, UNDP, among others, attended the event.

Hundreds of youths, comprising mainly of inventors, were awarded with one hundred million naira cash in the "battle for solution competition."

The Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN), Anambra State chapter, on Friday, vowed to sustain action towards promoting Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education among students.

The APWEN State Chairman, Engr Dr Ifeyinwa Chidum Dimson, who disclosed this in an inaugural speech after been sworn-in as 4th boss of the organisation, noted that promoting STEM education would also assist in nurturing students interest in engineering.

According to Dimson, the chapter under her watch would equally promote STEM competition, career talks, boot camp, basic tech training and scholarships for pupils in different schools in Anambra State.

"APWEN Awka chapter will continue to play a more active role in Nigerians schools and communities, inspiring young girls to see engineering, not only as a viable career path but as a pathway to transform their communities and contribute meaningfully to national development," she added.

She sought collaboration of the stakeholders with a view to making her vision as the Chairman for the next three years successful, adding that she envisaged a future where the organisation would become synonymous with excellence and innovation.

"I will empower and develop female engineers through mentorship, career development and skill enhancement, equipping them to excel and lead in diverse sectors of engineering fields. I plan to initiate more workshops, industrial visits, collaborative learning platforms, and strategic partnerships with both public and private institutions to enhance our professional competencies," she noted.

In her valedictory speech earlier, the immediate past Chairman of the chapter, Engr Helen Ifeanyichukwu , recalled that her administration which came on board with 3 point agenda of continuation on professional competence, instilling hopes and engineering in female gender, and integrating cum collaborations with uniform women engineers in military, force and paramilitary.

"APWEN is a nongovernmental organisation but by the the overwhelming grace of God, good spirited individuals, freewill donations, supports, we were able to weather our financial storms effectively through cashless transactions. With our judiciousness, we were able to hand over a reasonable sum of money to the newly elected executive. We made the association enter into MOU with all the other divisions under Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Awka branch, to give APWEN Awka chapter a newer face," she stated.

Earlier, the National President, APWEN, Engr. Dr. Adebisi Osim, described the new Chairman as a leader not only dedicated to excellence in engineering but also passionate about empowering women and advancing their collective goals.
 
" Leadership is not just a title; it is a responsibility to inspire, to innovate, and to serve. I do not doubt that under your leadership, this chapter will reach new heights, fostering collaborations and creating opportunities that will empower women engineers and benefit the community at large.

The award was presented to the Press Secretary in Awka by Anambra Media Excellence Awards, AMEA, at its sixth award ceremony.

Presenting the award, the Vice President, Nigeria Union of Journalists, South East Council, Comrade Emmanuel Ifesinachi applauded the contributions of Mr Aburime towards the development of the journalism profession.

He acknowledged the developmental strides of the current administration of Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo across all sectors of the state economy, as well as the efforts of Mr Aburime in projecting them, expressing optimism that the Governor will deliver more dividends of democracy to ndị Anambra.

The award was received on behalf of the Press Secretary by the Special Assistant to the Governor on Media, Mr. Ejike Abana.

Anambra State Disability Rights Commission (ANSDRC), Thursday, unveiled plans to host seminars and workshops geared towards exploring investment opportunities related to persons with disabilities (PWDS).

The Chairman, ANSDRC, Barrister Chukwuka Ezewuzie, who disclosed this at a press conference held in Awka, the Anambra State capital, explained that the event which would include road shows and public awareness campaigns would feature prominently in the 2024 International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) organised by the commission.

According to Ezewuzie, the activities would kick-off on 3rd December, 2024, with celebrating leadership and advocacy campaigns, tour of special education centres at Basden Memorial School, Special School for the Deaf, Odakpu Onitsha, including related places at Umuchu and Awka.

Others were on December 4th, seminars on exploring investment opportunities in disability-related ventures holding at Onitsha, and empowerment and emotional well-being themed lifting persons with disabilities from Paranoia to Pronoia holding on December 5th at Ekwulobia.

There would also be an evening session with the United Nations Simulcast on the theme "Amplifying the Leadership of Persons with Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future," on December 4th, and commission's family day coming up on December 6th geared towards empowering the PWDs to overcome Social Anhedonia

"There will be road show and public awareness campaigns in Awka on December 7th and Thanksgiving Services on December 8th at venue or various worship centers to be announced," he added.

The commission's boss, who averred that disability is neither synonymous with economic vulnerability nor social anhedonia, disclosed that they have started acgualising the legal representation for Persons with Disabilities powered by the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption Program (RoLAC).

He explained that four cases have already been filed at the commission by some PWDs seeking enforcement of their rights violated by some institutions and persons.

The affected persons, including Mr Victor Onwudiegwu, a civil servant denied driving license by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) because he is hearing impaired, Mr Nwokedi Philip, a person living with Albinism who escaped ritual killings attempt from a friend, and Mrs Ifeoma Ejidike, disfigured by brother's inlaw.

Ezewuzie, who said the Pro Bono lawyers powered by the Rule of Law and Anti-corruption (RoLAC) programme, were ready to defend and protect the rights of PWDs as enshrined in the Anambra State Disability Rights Law 2018.

"Our partnership and collaboration with the State Ministry of Justice and others will provide no excuse not to seek redress in court in accordance with sections 20 and 23 of Anambra State Disability Rights law. So if the rights of PWDs are infringed upon, they are now empowered to go to court and seek redress - the lawyers will represent them even where they are charged," he added.

Earlier, the RoLAC representative at the occasion, Mr Shedrack Nwekeagu, explained that the programme was not relenting in assisting the PWDs to secure justice, and urged the commission to leverage on the 2018 Anambra State Disability Rights law and pro bono lawyers to fast track the processes.

The Anambra State police command, Wednesday, agreed to investigate alleged assault and humiliation meted on young players and ex-Super Falcons striker, Maureen Madu.

Police officers from Anti Cult Unit, Zone 13, Ukpo had on October 19th, 2024 invaded Madu's Football Academy at Ozubulu, Ekwusigo Local Government Area, brutalised her and team players, who included young girls and boys.

Madu and other victims of the unfortunate incidents were at the Anambra Police command at Amawbia to incident the report and were assured of the police readiness to investigate and bring culprits to book.

The four world cup and two Olympics football Amazon was not only beaten together with her players but had their phones destroyed after which they were later bundled into the security vehicle in handcuffs to sleep and slept in the cel without investigating the petition nor making the man to substantiate his allegations against her.

Madu had called on the Police Inspector General, Kayode Egbetokun to investigate the case and bring the culprit to book.

She alleged that one Mr Uchenna Onyekwunife registered his daughter for summer football coaching in her Academy in June this year and abandoned her in the camp for four months without visiting or paying upkeep only to send an unknown cab man to come pick her up.

She said she refused to release the girl to the cab man because she said she did not know her.

“The Police, without carrying out any investigation or asking for my response, just invaded my academy led by the man who is owing to beat up everybody on site, seized and smashed their phones and arrested me in handcuffs. I am demanding that Ayuba Ahmadu, the Officer in Charge of Anti Cult Unit Ukpo annex and the SP Sunday Aleke, be investigated for such abuse of power and unprofessional handling of a case.

“The sad thing is that the man goes about boasting that nothing will happen because he has the AIG Zone 13 in his pocket. I am calling on IGP Kayode Egbetokun to handle this matter, the Police should not be an institution for the oppression of Nigeria masses, not me who served this country with all my youthfulness and is currently supporting youth players,” she said.

Already, the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has joined the call for the dispassionate investigation of the matter by IGP, insisting that on no account should security men invade or manhandle award winning sports icon of repute.

The Deputy Speaker of the Anambra state House of Assembly. Right Honorable Chukwuma Okoye says the 2025 budget estimate presented before the law makers touches every facet of development in the state.

Speaking with Journalists in Awka after the Governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo presented a draft estimate of 607 billion naira before the House, the Deputy Speaker noted that the budget serves as a road map to economic growth of Anambra State.

According to him, the 2025 budget estimate no doubt will enhance infrastructural development and improve the quality of lives of the people when passed.

Maureen Madu, a veteran Super Falcons striker and five-time Olympian has demanded justice over her allegedly dehumanisation in the hands of security personnel following an uninvestigated petition against her by a parent.

Madu who is the proprietor of Maureen Kiddies Football Academy for boys and girls made the call on Sunday while interacting with sports journalists in Awka on Sunday.

Narrating her ordeal, Madu said one man identified as Uchenna handed over his daughter over to her in Awka in June this year for basic training in football in her camp during the long holiday.

She said she invited the man to come to the camp and where she was and how she was fairing several times but he declined and never visited but rather sent money for purchase of her needs including underwear and sanitary pads.

Maureen said when it was time for school resumption, she invited Uchenna to come and take her child, but rather asked her to look for a school and enroll the child which she also turned down saying it was not her duty.

“That was how this man abandoned his daughter with me for four months without showing up until he sent a cab driver to come and pick and take her home but the girl said she was not going to join and because she did not know the driver, that was late September,” she said.

Continuing, the grassroots football coach said nothing was heard from the man until Oct. 9 when security personnel stormed the Ozubulu Camp of the Academy, beating up everybody in sight including the players and taking her away in handcuffs.

Maureen who showed the petition against her said the officers beat players with gunbutts, took their phones and smashed them and left some of them wounded and in the pool of their own blood.

Maureen said the personnel who neither investigated the allegations nor came with any warrant forced themselves into the camp, traumatised the players, seized their phones, handcuffed her like a common criminal and threw her into their vehicle.

“They handcuffed me like a common thief, seized my phone and those of my players, they beat them and some of them ended up in hospital.

“AllI ask for justice, my image has been severely damaged, I feel very embarrassed, the Police should return all the phones in their possession.

“The man who abandoned his child and petitioned against me should should be investigated and made to defend his frivolous claims " she said.

Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo’s recent speech to graduating students at Veritas University in Abuja revealed a truth that is hard to ignore: the socio-economic challenges Nigeria faces today cannot be wished away. They demand action, a concerted, collective commitment to change. Governor Soludo’s message echoes as both a wake-up call and a blueprint for the next generation, urging them to see themselves not merely as job-seekers but as active agents of national transformation.

Citing stark statistics, Governor Soludo revealed an income distribution reality that hits close to home. A study conducted during his tenure as Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria showed that 92% of bank account holders had balances of N300,000 or less, controlling only 7% of total deposits. Conversely, just 8% of depositors, each with more than N300,000, controlled a staggering 93% of the wealth in Nigeria’s banking sector. Such figures tell a powerful story about the inequality woven into Nigeria’s economic fabric, a system where a majority struggle to meet basic needs while a small minority holds most of the nation’s resources. For graduates stepping into the workforce, this presents a sobering picture, one that instructs as both a caution and a call to action.

With Nigeria’s income distribution heavily skewed and opportunities scarce, many young people resort to prayers to avoid the fate of the 92%: the underemployed, the unemployed, and the struggling masses. But, as Governor Soludo emphasised, it is not enough to pray or cast away this reality by supernatural fiat. The architecture of this unequal society will not change without collective effort. The question Governor Soludo raises is simple yet profound: If we all desire a better Nigeria, what are we willing to do to build it?

In his poignant address, Governor Soludo called upon fresh graduates to embrace their role in reshaping Nigeria’s future, echoing the mission of Veritas University to instill not just knowledge but purpose, integrity, and a commitment to the common good. The university’s mission, rooted in Catholic social teachings, is a reminder that graduates have been equipped not just for personal success but for societal impact. This mission draws upon the core tenets of “The Purpose Driven Life” by Rick Warren, as well as Chapter Two of Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution, which sets forth the “Fundamental Objectives and Directive Principles of State Policy.” These texts offer a foundation for a new kind of progressive nationalism, one that prioritises compassion, justice, and responsibility above self-interest.

Going further, Governor Soludo’s vision for a “new social contract” dwells on the idea that, for Nigeria to thrive, we need a binding agreement between the state and its citizens. In essence, Nigeria needs a society where citizens have a stake in its future, where socio-economic rights are guaranteed, and where no one is left behind. Although Nigeria’s Constitution outlines these objectives, they remain non-justiciable, meaning they lack legal enforcement. Governor Soludo argues that making these aspirations enforceable could inspire a generation fired with a renewed sense of patriotism, a generation that feels it owes something back to society because society has invested in it.

As Governor Soludo also noted, today’s youth often feel disconnected from the idea of duty to Nigeria. Unlike previous generations that benefitted from tuition-free education, this generation faces financial and structural obstacles. It is difficult, they argue, to feel loyal to a nation that has not offered them the opportunities that were once readily available. Governor Soludo, however, offers a powerful maxim: the fact that God, in His wisdom, made us Nigerians means there is a purpose for our place in this country. Rather than be discouraged by the limitations around us, he suggests that we must look inward and upward, finding purpose in building a Nigeria that works for all.

Therefore, Governor Soludo’s discourse is not simply a call for patriotism. It is a call to active, pragmatic progressivism. It is a call that true progress doesn’t occur in isolation; it requires all hands on deck. The mission of Veritas University, to produce graduates driven by integrity and committed to social justice, should be embraced by all Nigerians who envision a better future that allows every citizen, regardless of background, to thrive.

In a society where survival often takes precedence over self-actualisation, Governor Soludo’s message is both timely and timeless. He challenges young Nigerians to see themselves not just as individuals on a personal journey but as stakeholders in a collective mission. As he stated, selfless public service is the ultimate form of philanthropy, and it is through this spirit of giving back that true change can occur. A competitive, humane society is possible if we work together to build it.

Anambra State governor, Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, Friday, said his administration was determined to change the status of Agulu in Anaocha LGA from a travelling route to a destination where tourist and investors would live and thrive.

Soludo disclosed this while commissioning Solutions Arena Fruits and Vegetables market comprising over 65 spaces shops built by Awka Capital Territory Development Authority (ACTDA) at Oye Toro in Umuowere village, Agulu.

The governor, who hailed the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, ACTDA, Hon. Osita Onuko for siting a market into the ancient community, explained that the initiative was part of his numerous agenda to develop and lift Agulu to an enviable height.

According to him, ACTDA which has sited similar project at Okpuno in Awka South LGA, has through the project contributed to his administration efforts to put an end to street trading and hawking along the road which exposes people to accidents, diseases, traffic jams, among other untold hardships.

"ACTDA under this young man (Osita Onuko) is doing a great job. After siting Solutions Arena fruits and vegetables at Okpuno, he quickly sited this one here to show you that Agulu is part of Awka Capital Territory Development Authority. We don't want our women to be trading under the sun and rain, and along the streets.

"This project will help to decongest traffics at Nwagu. ACTDA has used Agulu to set a modal for other communities without such to see it as a model," he added noting that basic amenities such as toilets, borehole, 24 hours solar powered lights, among others were provided to give the facility a facelift.

The governor further maintained that the state master plan for Agulu was huge and accommodates the next generation of Anambra, adding that his administration has mapped out all Trunk-A Road for dualization, starting from Agulu where roads leading to Ekwulọbịa to Akọwa (Imo State) and to Nnewi through Neni -Oraukwu where also ongoing.

"We have a huge agenda in Agulu and Anaocha. Agulu is a big town. God created and beautified the town with a lake. We will turn Agulu into a tourist destination by changing the status of the lake and Agulu generally so that tourists, including local and foreign investors will come to live here.

"The Solution Arena which is not ordinarily meant to be a state government project is just supposed to serve as a model to communities, as part of our urban regeneration agenda. This is meant to take development nearer to the people, especially the poor and forgotten, in line with the "leave no one behind" mantra of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA.

"Everybody that will do business here, will get a shop free of charge. There are communities in the state who hadn't seen coal tar, but with the massive road construction of over 500 kilometres, they can now heave a sigh of relief", the Governor added.

Earlier, the Chairman of Anaocha local government area, Mr. Romanus Ibekwe, and members representing Anaocha Constituencies One and Two at the State House of Assembly, Ms. Nkechi Ogbuefi and Hon. Ejike Okechukwu expressed joy over the Governor's numerous developmental projects in the Council area, assuring that they would support his vision and second term ambition.

Techies Unite for Soludo, a social impact organisation, on Friday, unveiled virtual platform with a view to hold the government accountable for tech development, tech policies, and policy enforcement in Anambra State.

The platform, www.techies4soludo.ng, would also promote the tech ecosystem, digital development, and continuity of the current administration of governor Chukwuma Soludo in Anambra state.

TUFs, which was unveiled in a virtual session on Friday, would also hold the government accountable for social and tech development in the state.

According to Mr Castro Ideke, one of the administrator of the organisation, summary of their Action Plan were to understudy the tech gaps in Anambra state, develop strategies for closing up the gap, support the re-election of the current administration for continuity, and seek to liaise with the government to build a tech-driven economy in Anambra state.

It was learnt that the interactive digital platform would also engage the citizenry while offering opportunities for support groups and others to promote governor Chukwuma Soludo's administration developmental projects, policies and others.

"The platform is an interactive one, you can sign up and meet with many other tech enthusiasts. There is a column for all Soludo support groups in the state, and you can take pictures of Soludo’s projects, upload them on the platform to show what the governor is doing. We also have social media handles

“You can also ask certain questions about projects in your area, and people will respond to you in real time. It also has column for engagements and job findings. What we plan to do with this project has never been done before,” he said.

The member representing Ogbaru federal constituency of Anambra state in the 10th National Assembly, Hon. Victor Afam Ogene has sponsored training of 50 members of his constituency on modernised fish farming techniques.

The beneficiaries comprised 40 female and 10 male farmers in the rich agricultural riverine area of Anambra state

The training which was held at Iyiowa-Odekpe area in Ogbaru local government area yesterday was organised by Hon. Ogene who is chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Renewable Energy in collaboration with the Federal Co-operative College, Oji River, Enugu state and private agro-firm, Z-Index Limited.

The beneficiaries who later received start-up modern fish farming equipment were thoroughly trained on how to establish a fishery business, including how to handle fingerlings till maturity age.

They were also taught in details about the types of feed to breed the fish, how to feed them, the kind of supplement and hygiene required for optimal health and growth of the fish.

In addition to undergoing the theoretical session, the trainers later engaged the trainees in practical demonstrations of the procedure for fishery management. They were also given business tips in the field, after which they received startup packages which included fingerlings, plastic tanks, fish feed, fish antibiotics and cash grant.

Leader of the trainers, a renowned mechanised farmer in the federal constituency, Mr. Arinze Nzeli, commended the empowerment gesture of Hon. Ogene, describing it as a potential game changer in the lives of the beneficiaries.

He described farming as "game changer, great economic booster, both for the farmers and the society at large".

He testified that Farming has made him a great person.

He said"Farming has evidently changed my life. I'm into fishery, poultry, and other forms of animal husbandry in this Ogbaru. And I can attest that if you are very dedicated, fishery can take one out of poverty. So, I encourage the beneficiaries of this training and empowerment programme to be very committed to this business and within a short period of time, they also will testify. It would offer them the needed opportunity for self employment and job creation too.

"I want to particularly thank our Honourable (Victor Afam Ogene) for setting up a committee to monitor the progress of the beneficiaries, especially as he has promised to further assist those who take the business seriously," Mr. Nzeli said.

Hon. Ogene said the training and empowerment programme was part of his economic development strategy in Ogbaru Federal Constituency.

Ogene said, "Our aim is not just to give our people fish, but to also teach them how to fish.

"We will continue to facilitate skills acquisition and entrepreneurship opportunities for our people that will help them thrive in life. Apart from university education, which we also support with access and opportunities for our people, we also thought it wise to incorporate some economic enhancing soft skills in addition to useful skills in evolving technologies which we started weeks ago with the training in solar energy for our youths.

"We will continue to do our best in this regard in addition to some physical projects - some of which are already ongoing - which we have facilitated for the good and development of our people," Hon. Ogene stated further.


One of the beneficiaries, Madam Oluchi Acholonu from Atani area said, "I'm thanking God Almighty for the person of Hon. Afam Ogene, who is a God-sent to the people of Ogbaru Federal Constituency to lead the people and assist them in ways that would alleviate poverty, with his wise empowerment initiatives.

Another participant, Mrs. Nkechi Nsofor, said she couldn't contain her joy regarding the wonderful event describing the programme as the first time their representative in government organised such training for them in the area.

Earlier, in September, Hon. Ogene had facilitated the training of 100 Ogbaru youths in the federal constituency on solar energy technology and provided the beneficiaries with start-up equipment and cash grants.

The Governor of Anambra State, Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR, has expressed profound sadness on the death of Lieutenant General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, Chief of Army Staff of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, on Tuesday at the age of 56.

In his condolence message, Governor Soludo extended his deepest condolences to His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, the Nigerian Army, and the bereaved family of the late General Lagbaja on this irreparable loss.

The Governor further described General Lagbaja's untimely departure at the age of 56 as a huge loss to the Nigerian Army and the nation in general.

The Governor reiterated that General Lagbaja's distinguished military career, marked by his exceptional service and dedication to our nation's security, serves as a tribute to his uncompromising commitment to Nigeria's unity and progress.

As an alumnus of the prestigious U.S. Army War College, General Lagbaja brought unparalleled expertise to his role, serving with distinction in various capacities including as platoon commander in the 93 Battalion and the 72 Special Forces Battalion. His leadership in critical internal security operations, from Operation ZAKI in Benue State to Operations Lafiya Dole, Udoka, and Forest Sanity, further demonstrated his tactical acumen and relentless dedication to Nigeria's peace and stability.

Governor Soludo, therefore, prays that the Almighty God grant the late general's soul eternal rest and give his family the solace to bear this great loss.

The National Association of Nigeria Students (NANS), Wednesday, hailed Engr. Barnabas Gemade led Governing Council of Federal Polytechnic, Oko, Anambra State for following a transparent process in election of a substantive Rector for the institution.

NANS at end of zone F monthly meeting held in Awka, the State capital, said they were happy that Gemade team followed the path of honour by screening and chosen the right candidate out of 18 that applied for the topmost position and asked oppositions to the appointment not to distract the council.

The student body, while addressing a press conference, also appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu not to listen to the detractors but should go ahead and approving the best candidate for the job as recommended by Gemade led Governing Council.

The Southeast Coordinator, NANS Zone F, Comrade Charles Obinna Ijeọmah, while reading the statement, also commended the President over the appointment of Hon. Tunji Alaussa as new Minister of Education, assuring that they were ready to work with him for the overall welfare of students.

They also commended President Bola Tinubu over appointment of Ambassador Bianca Ojukwu as minister of State for Foreign Affairs, describing it as a step in right direction, even as they expressed optimisim that Bianca would bring in her wealth of knowledge, experience and capacities towards repositioning the ministry for overall good of students and other Nigerians.

"We also want to call the attention of the President on the terrible state of roads in the Southeast, which is posing serious threat to our students as several accidents and robberies have been recorded and we plead for the urgent intervention of the federal government to put them in order," he stated.

NANS also hailed the Governing Council of Federal Polytechnic Oko, Anambra State for following due process in appointing a substantive Rector for the Polytechnic and urged every dissenting voice to sheath their swords and support the new boss to move the institution forward.

The body also extolled the Southeast governors, especially Professor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State, Rt. Hon. Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State, Dr Alex Otti of Abia State, Senator Hope Uzodinma of Imo State and Mr. Peter Mbah of Enugu State for providing enabling environment and fatherly love for education to thrive in the zone.

Ijeomah and the NANS National Director, Comrade Ernest Okafor, further called on Southeast governors to provide palliatives to students, as well as overhaul the NANS transportation system by reducing the taxation on their drivers so as to enable them reduce the students cost of transportation.

"We also appeal to the Southeast governors to totally overhaul the NANS transportation scheme across the various campuses in the zone to make transportation easy and affordable for the students and for security reasons," they stated.

The NANS zonal boss, however, commended the president for initiating several programmes including students loans aimed at improving the living conditions of the students and appealed to students schooling at tertiary institutions in Abịa, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo to utilise the loans for academic advancements.

"We love the kind gestures of the federal government like approval of the students loans to combat number of students drop out of school or facing challenges in paying school fees. He also approved CNG buses for NANS students across the federation. We are happy for that.

"We commended the National President of NANS, Lucky Omoneye for his efforts in repositioning NANS to lead students Union that will always protect the interests of the students. We also appreciate the Senate President of NANS, Akinteye Babatunde Afeez for using his office to push for the overall welfare of Nigerian students.
I won't forget to salute the capacity SSA to the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on students engagement, Sunday Asheton for always been here for us," he noted.

Others, including the Southeast Vice President, National Association of Nigeria Colleges of Education Students (NANCES),
Comrade Christian Chukwuecherem Obi, National Vice President; and Vice President, National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS), Comrade Chukwuebuka Umezuluorah; also declared support to the federal government efforts to reposition education system in the country.

They also urged the federal government to appoint a substantive Rector for the Federal Polytechnic Oko, Anambra State, by ensuring that the best person emerged out of the transparent election processes organised by Barnabas Germade led Polytechnic Council.

Ezinano Community comprising 20 villages in Awka, Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State, weekend, announced a ₦10m reward for anyone with useful information that could lead to the arrest of those responsible for the killing of about 25 persons within the Capital city in the month of October.

Gunmen suspected to be cultists had on October 21, 2024 attacked Nibo community during new yam festival, including Nọdụ village in Okpuno and Ifite village in Awka communities, killing and injuring many youth, underaged, the aged and women.

The leader of Ezinano, Ozo Jeff Nweke, who announced the bounty at second edition of Ezinano Day, a celebration of the community’s culture and heritage, described the killings as man inhumanity-to-man and unjustifiable act.

According to Nweke, Ezinano which is a peaceful community would support the law enforcement agents to fish out those responsible for the heinous crimes even as they were not relenting in orientating their members not to engage in cultism or killings of any such.

He also stated that the community was poised to support the youth and women with good characters and conduct to excel in their useful ventures, adding that the historic community would not condone idleness and crimes of any such.

Nweke, who further announced a ₦100 million empowerment funds mapped out by the community to enable their women venture and explore any business of their choices, said they would disburse ₦50 million immediately and release the balance before December 2024 so as to build of Community of entrepreneurs, captains of industry and jobs creators for everlasting peace and prosperity.

"Today, we are also launching our ₦100 million empowerment scheme to enable our women engage in different businesses of their choice. But we are realising ₦50 million today for this project, while the other ₦50 million will be released before December 2024. This programme is part of our commitment to build a prosperous and peaceful community. We believe that empowering women is key to unlocking our community’s potential," he stated.

He thanked the community for the support given to his leadership so far, noting that he would hand over the mantle of Ezinano community leadership to another person before the end of December, 2024.

Other stakeholders who spoke at the occasion, including Ọzọ Obi Ochije, Mrs Ifeoma Nwokoye, hailed Ọzọ Nweke for standing for the community when a capacity leader was needed to reposition Ezinano assuring that they would support whoever he would hand over the mantle of leadership to with a view to move the community forward.
