Justice Development and Peace Caritas (JDPC) Nnewi, a faith based civil society group, in partnership with Enough is Enough (EiE) Nigeria, Thursday, intensified calls for creation of Office of the Citizens (OOTC) Help Desk to promote good governance and accountability across 21 Council Areas In Anambra State.

OOTC, it was learnt, would be sited at respective Council Areas with purpose of enabling people to easily relate with their Local government Chairmen and Councillors by reporting issues like insecurity, human rights abuses, poorly done or abandoned local government projects, as well as to share ideas and ask questions.

The groups at town-hall meetings with major stakeholders at Ayamelum and Awka North Local Government Areas, Anambra State, argued that since citizens understand the efforts of the local government authorities to ensure development and good governance, they would easily assist to end fake news dissemination, and express concerns.

The two separate town-hall meetings, held at Anaku for Ayamelum and Urum in Awka North, were attended by both men and women, youth, community and some political leaders across respective communities, were aimed at sensitising the citizenry to know their rights and build capacities towards holding the government accountable.

The Programme Manager, Enough is Enough Nigeria, Mr Usen Asanga, while explaining that the project was being implemented in six states of the federation, including Anambra State where it's launch across three LGAs in three senatorial districts, hinted that it successful implementation would help to involve all in decision making, achieve accountability and good governance for the people.

"We want to bridge the relationship between the local government and the citizens to achieve accountability and good governance for the people.

"Apart from building their capacities, we want them to be able to articulate their needs and also show them the techniques of engaging the government. We cannot sit down and want good governance to be given to us. We have to demand it.

"The local government is the closest to the people. It is at the grassroots that people should be able to make their voices heard. Our target is to bring government and people together to move society forward," he said.

He explained that EiE would through the project position the Chairman for international recognition, while offering free publicity in the press to celebrate the respective Local Government Chairman's innovative thinking in setting up the OOTC help desk.

The citizenry, who would man the respective desks, it was learnt would do that without expecting payments, and would be trained and empowered to deliver on the duty accordingly.

On his part, the Director, JDPC Nnewi Diocese, Rev. Fr. Ben Chima Okolo, explained that the programme was parts of their efforts to improve grassroots governance through My Local Government Project (MYLGA) Project geared towards sensitising the populace to hold the government accountable.

"We know that the state government is trying, but we are particularly interested in good governance. Our intention is to hear the people, sensitize and strengthen them on their roles as citizens in our democratic environment," he stated.

Contributing, the State Coordinator of MYLGA Project, Mr Onyekachi Ololo, added that the desk would also serve as an interface to share ideas and ask questions, create an environment where citizens and the local government authorities work for the collective benefit of the community.

"We call for the creation of an Office of the Citizens (OOTC) Help Desk with an Officer where citizens from Ayamelum LGA can readily report issues of insecurity, human rights violation, health and education abandoned or poorly executed local government projects in their communities, and other matters. The same thing will be replicated at Awka North," Ololo.

He also assured them that project would end with election as they were prepared to engage with the would be elected Council Chairmen and Councillors at the pilot areas at the end of election for smooth development of grassroots.

Ayamelum
As a result of the project, at Anaku, the stakeholders vowed to mobilise action towards ensuring that winners of the State 28th September 2024 Council poll were credible and trustworthy to deliver dividends of democracy at the grassroots.

The people regretted that lack of basic amenities and total absence of government presence draw their development backward while impacting negatively on their agricultural produce.

The President General, Umuerum community, Hon. Alphonsus Obiekezie, while speaking at the occasion on behalf of other president generals, lamented that their roads were not motorable, aside challenges posed by lack of power supply and intimidation of his people by security agencies, among others.

He said, "We have no good road. Sometimes before I go to Awka, I'm required to come out with two dresses. There is no electricity and we don't have some other amenities despite being the largest producer of rice in the state. We have been pleading with the governor to help us construct that Awba-femmili to Umuerum bridge to have a way of transporting our products to other places."

On his part, Mrs Chinyere Okafor, from Omor town, urged the populace to shun vote buying and electoral malpractices by voting wisely for a credible Council Chairman and Counselors capable of addressing their needs as well as taken their plights to the governor where the need arises.

She said, "Time has come for us to itemize our problems and make it known when our leaders come on board. That way, we would also ensure that they work in accordance with our priority needs."

Awka North

At Urum, Awka North Local Government Area, where the CSOs engaged with the citizens, stakeholders including aspirants for the forthcoming election, vowed to support the project.

Speaking at the occasion, the Traditional Ruler of Urum, Igwe Benedict Okafor-Nweke, hailed the initiative, noting that the community was not only ready to support it but would assist in mobilising other communities in the Council to key into it.

On his part, the Traditional Prime Minister of Amanuke Community, Chief Charles Obi, described it as a welcome development, which according to him, would help to maintain peace and progress at the hinterland.

According to Obi, Awka North were in dare need of citizen Desk officer, which they saw as best ways of enabling them to reach out to the government as well as air their views in unity and sincerity of purpose.

Another community leader, Mr Albert Chinwuko had recalled how the people of Awka North suffer as a result of lack of basic amenities until governor Chukwuma Soludo came to their rescue of recent.

Chinwuko, while expressing optimism that constructing Urum-Achalla road would help to connect and further develop the community which is within Awka Capital Territory Development, urged unity of purpose among them especially as the State elect new Council boss after over a decade.

On his part, a political leader, Hon. Onyeka Umerie, lamented that lack of citizen engagement with political leaders were why many health centres in the Council Area were currently being run by quacks following resignation of professionals in seek of greener pastures elsewhere.

According to Umerie, the quacks occupying those health centres included cleaners, sweepers, among other persons who have assumed duties of midwives and injecting patients because the professionals have left the institution.

"Some of them are also selling the drugs given to them to offer the patients for free. We need proper citizens engagement, monitoring and supervision to get Awka North developed. It is time we eschew politics of bitterness, favouritism and do things rightly. When you notice that things are not going well, don't hesitate to reveal it to the relevant authorities," he added.

Contributing, young man in isiagu, urged political leaders from the Council area who have lost interest or capacities to lead to kindly quit and allow new people to come on board.

Responding, the Transition Committee Councillor for Urum Ward, Hon. Uchenna Nnonyelum, assured the people of Awka North to ensure they elect the new credible leadership, whom he believed would be focused, dedicated and committed to deliver on their mandate.

The women leader, Ugbenu Community, Mrs Oby Odezuligbo, in her contributions, urged the people of Awka North to eschew politics of bitterness and support each other to gain exposure, rise to stardom, as well as contribute towards the infrastructural and human capital development.

The Awka North Local government coordinator, Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD), Mr Martins Anachuna, advocated for political, economic and education empowerment of people living with disabilities for inclusiveness.

Dr. Law Mefor has been sworn-in as the new Information Commissioner in Anambra State.

Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR performed the function at the State Executive Council Chambers, Government House, Awka.

The Governor of Anambra State, Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR, has congratulated all Muslim brothers and sisters in Anambra State and across Nigeria as they celebrate this year’s Eid el Maulud festival.

In his goodwill message, Governor Soludo described Eid el Maulud as a significant occasion that marks the birth of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and serves as a reminder of his exemplary life, teachings, and the virtues of Islam which are peace, love, and brotherhood.

Governor Soludo, therefore, urged all Muslim Ummah to reflect on the Prophet’s message of unity, tolerance, and peaceful coexistence.

He emphasized the importance of fostering an atmosphere of harmony, understanding, and mutual respect among people of all faiths in Anambra State and Nigeria as a whole.

Also, the Governor called on the Muslim community to use this period of celebration to pray for the peace, progress, and prosperity of Anambra State and Nigeria, even as they extend their hand of fellowship to the needy and vulnerable in the society.

Anambra State Governor Professor Chukwuma Soludo, CFR, has expressed the deliberateness of his administration to transform Onitsha metropolis.

Governor Soludo stated this at the Commissioning of Trans-Nkisi Recreation Centre, Onitsha.

The governor, who described Onitsha as the commercial capital of the South East, said that if it doesn't move, the entire region will not move.

"I am excited to come to Trans-Nkisi.

"The transformation of the whole axis- Akpaka, 3-3, GRA are so critical to the greater Onitsha.

"We started from Okpoko. Our major drive is to develop our place. We are breathing life back into our towns.

"Everywhere in Anambra state is experiencing something and turned into a large construction site. We are prioritising needs, "Governor Soludo stated.

While speaking about the Onitsha main market, reputed to be the largest market in West Africa, the Governor revealed the existence of a master plan, saying that soon, the market will be rebuilt; with multi-storey complexes, to become 21st century compliant.

"With the population surge, our master plan for a greater Onitsha will come in handy, at least because of the next generation.

"Anambra has the smallest landmass after Lagos. All the trunk A roads will be dualized.

The governor stated that because of inadequate resources, the Public-Private-Community-Partnership, PPCP model can be used to develop the state.

The governor thanked ndị Anambra, who are already answering the call. He enumerated a number of roads built by patriotic and rich ndị Anambra, which he has already commissioned since the call was made.

Evaluating the resources available to the government, Governor Soludo said, "A look at the budget of Anambra relative to the income of the state is nothing to write home about.

He reiterated that "the reality is that 99 per cent of the resources are in private hands, government is in possession the remaining.

"This is why most governments make promises and don't fulfil it. But, for me, I will say what I will do, and I will do what I say.

"I commend you for the fitness centre, but there is more to be done.

"The basic civic duty by adults is payment of tax. It is a sad reality that keke riders contribute more taxes than wealthy businessmen and women.

The governor expressed readiness to partner people of the area to develop the place.

"I am ready to do pilot phase building. I'll come again when we set out our programme.

"We will set up a joint committee of Trans Nkisi and government. For every amount you people contribute, we will match it with fifty per cent, "the governor further said.

The Secretary of the Landlord Allottees of Trans Nkisi Layout, Nchekwube Okeke, appreciated Prof. Soludo for being the first governor to visit the layout after 44 years of its creation.

"This visit is remarkable for many reasons.

"We have been dreaming of such an opportunity to appreciate the governor for his uncommon wisdom in piloting the affairs of the state.

"When completed, the ongoing projects within the layout will open the layout to the outside world," he said.

He pleaded with the governor to wade into the issue of land grabbers, especially in parts of phase two of the layout, saying that they are receiving support from neighbouring communities.

"We make earnest supplication for more roads within the layout.

"We have applied for more polling units. We appeal for assistance since it will afford more people opportunities to vote.

Among other pleas, he pledged their support and readiness to fully cooperate with the state government in developing their layout.

The Government of Anambra State, under the leadership of Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo, CFR, joins the Catholic community and the people of Anambra State in celebrating the birthday of His Lordship, Most Reverend Paulinus Ezeokafor, Bishop of Awka Diocese.

Governor Soludo described Bishop Ezeokafor as a "spiritual leader and a champion of peace and development" and praised his contributions to the state. "His unwavering commitment to the spiritual growth and development of our people is truly inspiring," the Governor said.

Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR, has inaugurated Dr. Nneka Onyeali-Ikpe as Chairman of the Governing Council for Nwafor Orizu College of Education, Nsugbe.

Governor Soludo swore in Dr. Onyeali-Ikpe, who is the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Fidelity Bank Plc, alongside others at the Government House, Awka.

Prof. Cele Aguruo, Chief Fidelis Nweke, Rev. Sis. Prof. Uju Dibua, and Ven. Dr. Rex Kanu were also sworn in as a member.

Dr. Justina Anyadiegwu is the Provost, while Mrs Edith Nwoye serves as the Acting Registrar, and Mr. Anthony Aniebo, who is the Acting Bursar.

Others are Dr. Chioma Azubike, Acting Librarian, Engr. Nnamdi Onyili, Director of Works, Dr. Urewuchi Udolisa, Staff representative and Mr. Benny Egbunonu, the Public Relations Officer.

Governor Soludo said the appointment of Dr. Onyeali-Ikpe was based on her impeccable credentials and experience as a seasoned banker and corporate leader.

Governor Soludo highlighted that her appointment was in line with the government’s efforts to reposition the college as a leading institution for teacher education and professional development in Nigeria and beyond.

He asked them to introduce some disruptive ideas that would bring about sustainable change in the institution.

The Head of Service, Barr. Theodora Igwegbe earlier enumerated the terms of reference of the Council, which basically borders on infrastructure and staff welfare.

Dr. Nneka Onyeali-Ikpe is a graduate of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and holds a Master’s degree in business administration from the University of Liverpool, United Kingdom. She is also a fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) and the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN).

With over 30 years of experience in the banking sector, Dr. Onyeali-Ikpe has distinguished herself as a visionary leader with a track record of delivering sustainable growth and driving innovation in the industry. Prior to her appointment as the Managing Director and CEO of Fidelity Bank in 2021, she had served in various management positions in the bank since 2015.

Reacting to her appointment, Dr. Onyeali-Ikpe expressed her appreciation to the Governor for the confidence reposed in her and members of the Council and pledged to work to transform the college and position it for global competitiveness.

The truly exceptional leaders in the world are often those who possess the foresight to anticipate future trends and challenges. Such individuals, just like the Governor of Anambra State, Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, are change agents, blazing trails that lead to remarkable progress.

As British statesman Winston Churchill once eloquently stated, “The pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; the optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.” This maxim encapsulates the essence of any visionary leader. His introduction of free antenatal and delivery services for pregnant women has been a game-changer, reducing maternal mortality rates and ensuring that more children are born into healthy conditions. What’s more, his commitment to agriculture, as seen in the Farm-to-Feed campaign and the free distribution of seedlings, has revitalised the agricultural sector, empowering farmers and boosting food security.

Governor Soludo’s vision extends to the regeneration of urban areas and the revitalisation of slums. His administration has embarked on projects aimed at transforming these areas into hubs of economic activity and human habitation, thus addressing long-standing issues of urban decay. Concurrently, his proactive stance on environmental preservation underscores his commitment to combating the twin challenges of gully erosion and flooding, protecting both lives and livelihoods.

With more still to come out of his prodigious abilities, Governor Soludo’s tenure in Anambra State will continue to be a master-class in imaginative leadership, combining foresight, selflessness, prudence and an unyielding commitment to progress. The member representing Ogbaru Federal Constituency at the National Assembly, Hon. Afam Victor Ogene in collaboration with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Weekend, distributed multimillion Naira worth relief materials to the people of Ogwu-aniocha and Ogwu-ikpele communities in Ogbaru Local Government Area (LGA).

The two oil producing communities, it was learnt, were turned into Internally Displaced persons (ID); living in fears, hunger and crisis for years following invasion of unknown gunmen amidst the oil exploration which gave Anambra State 13% derivatives yet they were abandoned by various governments.

Distributing the relief materials which included bags of rice, garri, groundout oil, cartons of maggi, towels, clothing, mosquitoes, mattress, plastic buckets, among others, the Southeast Zonal Coordinator, NEMA, Mrs Ngọzi Echeazu explained that the agency felt concern over their predicament following Ogene's consistent narration of their plights through motions at the National Assembly.

Echeazu, who also conveyed the messages of hope from the National Director General, NEMA, Mrs Zubaida Umar to the populace, urged them to continue supporting the lawmaker with a view to enabling him to attract more developmental projects and supports to them.

Ogene equally trained and empowered 100 persons from the communities and other parts of Ogbaru Federal Constituency on renewable energy, focusing on solar energy installation and maintenance, over the weekend.

According to the lawmaker, who is also Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Renewable Energy, the three-day training, organised in collaboration with the Border Communities Agency (BCDA) and MODESCOM Solution Limited, was aimed at promoting self-dependence and economic growth.

He further maintained that the beneficiaries would receive start-up equipment, funding, and logistical support to enable them to earn a living in the renewable energy sector as well as create employments and green city.

Some of the participants at the training, including Mr Nnamdi Obiekie and Miss Faith John, shared their excitement about learning the intricacies of solar energy installation and maintenance, noting that they would never relent in making career in the sector.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Friday, said it would clampdown on sellers and abusers of alcoholic drinks, Illicit drugs and other substances at motor parks in Anambra State.

The State Sector Commander, FRSC, Joyce Alexander, who disclosed this at media parley in her office at Awka, added that the command would also prosecute drivers who drink or abuse Illicit drugs and substances either at parks or while driving.

According to her, the operation which would be carried out in partnership with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), was part of efforts geared towards reducing road crashes, while ensuring safer roads within Anambra State.

To achieve this and other programmes, the Sector Commander sought partnership with the media, community leaders, market leaders and other law enforcement agents, adding that they would sustain mass sensitisation campaign, public education and enlightenment so that enforcement would not be difficult.

Alexander, who added that the FRSC was committed to ensuring that road safety was on the front burner for increased awareness and safer roads in Anambra State, noted that it was also part of the policy thrust of the new Corps Marshall to rejig FRSC operations nationwide.

“I want to create impact so that Anambra people will begin to enjoy benefits of FRSC, including reduced crashes and disobedience to traffic rules. We’re going to achieve more visibility by posting personnel across the state and installing road signs. Even though we’re not recruiting, we’ll rejig operations and the evidence would be seen and felt by all.

“While I work with road users, I’ll be working with the state government and other agencies for better and improved service delivery. Even as we’re working on smooth roads, we’ll equally work on overspeeding. Smooth roads go with speed calming measures and one of them is UN approved bombs not those that look like culvet, but those electronically guided.

“Beyond that is the speed limiting devices. Transporters have been made to fix the devices on their vehicles. Though some have not been complying. But with the new thrust policy, we’ll start arresting defaulters and if we do, we’ll not just allow you to pay the fine and go with your vehicles. At a time, the world keeps facing the grim consequences of climate change, torrential rain, and flooding sometimes don't give notice. But as technology advances, weather conditions are predicted more accurately, such as is done every year by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and the Nigerian Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA).

So, when weather forecasts are issued, the wise prepare ahead and escape calamity. Only the careless get endangered.

The devastating floods that ravaged Anambra State last year, causing billions in damage to public and private property, were a tragic wake-up call. Tragically, many lives were also lost. As another round of rainfall and possible flooding is fast approaching, the state government is urgently warning residents in flood-prone areas to take immediate action to protect themselves, their property, and their livelihoods.

Accordingly, the Anambra State Government has advised people living in high-risk local government areas like Ogbaru, Ayamelum, Anambra East and West, Onitsha South and North, Awka North, Idemili South, Ekwusigo, and Ihiala to begin relocating their crops, poultry, fish ponds, and domestic animals to safer ground.

Indeed, Commissioner for Information, Sir Paul Nwosu, has also stressed that the time to act is now before the floodwaters arrive.

The latest warnings came based on forecasts from the Nigerian Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) and the Anambra State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), predicting heavy rainfall and severe flooding in the coming months. With climate change driving more extreme weather, the risks are only growing more threatening.

Thus, residents should also be prepared to evacuate themselves, especially the elderly, women, and children, to the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps set up by Governor Soludo's administration. As evacuations get underway, local government emergency management teams are also on standby to assist those in need. No one will be left behind.

Being always responsive to citizens’ welfare and safety, the state government is leaving no stone unturned in its efforts to protect Ndi Anambra. That's why a Flood Response Committee led by the Deputy Governor, Dr. Onyekachukwu Ibezim is already coordinating with the Anambra State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to provide further guidance to flood-prone communities in the days ahead. But residents must do their part as well.

Again, the lessons of last year's disaster are clear. Flooding poses a grave threat, and the time to prepare is now. By heeding the government's warnings and taking proactive steps, Anambra's residents can keep themselves, their loved ones, their property, and their livelihoods safe from the coming deluge. Complacency is not an option, and because lives are at stake, compliance is the life saver.

*ANAMBRA STATE GOVERNMENT CLARIFIES CHIDO OBIDIEGWU, EX-MD OF ANAMBRA BROADCASTING SERVICE (ABS) IS REDEPLOYED, NOT SACKED*

The Anambra State Government has made a clarification that the exit of Mr. Chido Obidiegwu as the Managing Director of Anambra Broadcasting Service (ABS) is just a routine redeployment and not a sack as being insinuated by some sections of the media.

It would be recalled that the Governor of Anambra State, Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR, recently approved the appointment of a new Managing Director for ABS as part of ongoing reshuffling and rejigging of government operations.

Therefore, this clarification becomes necessary to correct wrong impressions being created in the minds of the public that Mr. Obidiegwu was sacked. He has only been redeployed and not sacked as being erroneously reported.

The Governor of Anambra State, Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR, has approved the appointment of Mr. Chuka Ikechukwu Nnabuife as the Managing Director of the Civic and Social Reformation Office. This appointment is part of Governor Soludo’s commitment to fostering civic responsibility, social reform, and cultural advancement in the state.

Mr. Nnabuife brings an impressive pedigree spanning over 35 years in journalism, media administration, and the arts. A journalist of international repute, Nnabuife is a Fellow of both the Nigerian Guild of Editors (FNGE) and the Society of Nigerian Artists (FSNA). His dynamic career has taken him across all continents, except Australia, as he continues to promote societal discourse through media, community leadership, and his wide-ranging artistic ventures.

A prolific writer and author of nine books, including co-authoring two, Mr. Nnabuife has also directed and produced two films, leaving an indelible mark on the Nigerian art and media landscape. His remarkable career is punctuated by over 40 awards and recognitions, attesting to his innovative approach to media and communication.

Mr. Nnabuife holds a Master of Science in Media and Communication from Pan Atlantic University, Lagos, specialising in Media Enterprise. His academic journey also includes a Postgraduate Diploma in Public Administration from the University of Calabar, a Diploma in Journalism from the International Institute of Journalism, Abuja, and a Higher National Diploma in Fine and Applied Arts from the Institute of Management and Technology, Enugu. He further pursued professional certification from the Chartered Institute of Stockbrokers, Nigeria.

Prior to this appointment, Mr. Nnabuife served as the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Anambra Newspapers and Printing Corporation from July 2018 to September 2023, and the Managing Director/Editor-in-Chief of National Light Newspaper from July 2014 to June 2018, among other notable editorial positions.

A knight of the St. John International Order of the Roman Catholic Church, Mr. Nnabuife’s leadership and expertise are expected to significantly impact civic and social reformation efforts across Anambra State.

Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR, has approved the replacement of Mr. Chido Obidiegwu as the Managing Director of Anambra Broadcasting Service (ABS) with the appointment of Mr. Christopher Osemedua Molokwu, as the new Managing Director of ABS.

According to a statement from the governor's Press Secretary, Mr Christian Aburime, Molokwu's appointment takes immediate effect.

The statement added that Molokwu, who hails from Delta State brings to the role a wealth of experience as a seasoned media practitioner and an accomplished broadcaster with a demonstrated history of excellence in the media production industry.

His career spans over 16 years, during which he has garnered vast expertise in strategic planning, customer service, event management, and social media.

Prior to his appointment, Mr. Molokwu served as the Programs Manager at Wazobia FM Onitsha and as Head of Sports at Steam Broadcasting Limited (96.9 Cool FM).

A product of the University of Benin, where he earned a degree in English Language and Literature, Mr. Molokwu is a member of the Institute of Disaster Management and Control, as well as an Associate Member of the Advertising Practitioners Council of Nigeria (APCON).

His leadership and professional skills in media management, community engagement, and social services make him well-positioned to lead ABS into a new era of growth and innovation.

While thanking Mr. Obidiegwu for his services as the former MD of ABS and wishing him well in his future endeavours, Mr Governor also commends the new MD to key into the administration’s vision of transforming Anambra into a livable and prosperous state.

Youth group vows to track, promote government development policies in Anambra

Catch Them Young Community Initiative (CATYCOI), a civil society group, Tuesday, expressed commitment towards promoting government community development policies in Anambra State through tracking, monitoring and sensitisations.

The Executive Director, Catch Them Young Community Initiative (CATYCOI), Comrade Nonso Orakwe, who stated this during an advocacy visitation to the member representing Anaocha 2 Constituency at the Anambra State House of Assembly, Hon. Ejike Okechukwu, said they were passionate of supporting the government to deliver the dividends of democracy to the populace.

Orakwe, who said the group had trained 30 youth from across 30 Constituencies in Anambra State and empowered them with the practical knowledge of policy making, tracking and monitoring for good governance, added that they were keen in reaching out to other populace with purpose of sensitising them on benefits of Anambra State apprenticeship bill popularly known as Igba boyi, among other youth oriented laws.

Responding, the member representing Anaocha 2 Constituency at the Anambra State House of Assembly, Hon. Ejike Okechukwu, hailed the group for choosing what he described as a right track, and urged them to get ready to offer their supports at public hearing and drafting of more developmental oriented bills.

Okechukwu, who is the sponsor of Igbo apprenticeship bill popularly known as Igba boyi at the hallowed chamber, explained that his purpose of introducing the bill was to fight poverty, exterminate crimes and unemployment in the society.

According to him, the bill which has passed through second reading and currently waiting for public hearings, has come to provide a regulatory framework to the ancient practice by ensuring fair treatment of apprentices and their masters, establish minimum standards for training, including mechanisms for resolving disputes among parties through a commission to be established by the government.

Okechukwu, who is also the Chairman, Anambra State House of Assembly Committee on Appropriation, urged the younger generation to support in sensitising the public about the bill because through it, young individuals would not only be placed under the mentorship of experienced artisans or business owners to serve over a period of time but would learn to succeed in trade, family and other ways of life.

"This is an informal types of education. By engaging on it, you will learn a lot from your master. You will learn how to marry, relate with your wife and train your children, your customers, gain more contracts and at the end, the commission to be established by the bill, will in partnership with any higher institution of learning issue you with a diploma certificate. The commission will also assist in settling any dispute arising from Ịgba boyi ," he added.

The lawmaker, who has sponsored over 20 motions and several bills, also sensitised the youth on his new bill, Anambra State mental health bill, which according to him, was aimed at managing issues of depression, anxiety and others by engaging the services of professional psychologists and doctors trained in that direction.

He further enumerated importance of Anambra State E-Governance bill also introduced by him, noting that it would help in monitoring and tracking government projects for inclusive and good governance with a view to hold government accountable and prevent misappropriation of public funds.

Contributing, the Programmes Manager, CATYCOI, Mr Israel Oji, maintained that the practical knowledge and experience the youth have gathered from the training and advocacy visit would empower them to engage others to support government policies.

Speaking in an interview, one of the participants, Mrs Chinenye Ikele, expressed optimism that Ịgba boyi bill would help in reducing unemployment, poverty and crimes in society.

The Representative of Ogbaru Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Afam Victor Ogene, has strongly denounced the brutal attack on the Atani headquarters of Ogbaru Local Government Area in Anambra State. He described the incident as "utterly horrendous, mindless, and worrisome".

In the early hours of Friday, August 30, 2024, unknown gunmen launched a ferocious assault on the LGA headquarters, setting it ablaze. Eyewitnesses reported that around 30 heavily armed assailants, who were said to have accessed the vicinity from the Umuzu and Amiyi axis, stormed the facility with guns and dynamites. The attack resulted in the destruction of buildings and vehicles within the complex.


In a statement issued in Awka, the state capital, on Friday, Rep Afam Victor Ogene expressed deep concern and condemnation over the senseless violence in Ogbaru Local Government Area. He urged the Anambra State Government and security agencies to take immediate action to ensure the safety and security of the people.

Rep Ogene lamented that the recurring violent killings and destruction of property in the LGA have become a persistent nightmare, instilling morbid fears and trepidation among the residents. He emphasized the need for swift and decisive action to address the situation and restore peace to the affected communities.


According to Rep Afam Victor Ogene, the persistent violence and criminality in Ogbaru Local Government Area are alarming, despite repeated calls for government action. He stated, "It is worrisome that despite numerous appeals to the government to address insecurity in Ogbaru, we continue to witness avoidable incidents of violence and criminality."

Rep Ogene revealed that various groups, including traditional rulers, have submitted memos to Governor Prof. Charles Soludo, requesting increased security presence in the LGA, but their pleas have been ignored. He emphasized that he had personally alerted the Governor about the growing insecurity and the need to address the root causes, including the Ogwuaniocha communal crisis, but his warnings have gone unheeded.

"In fact, I am aware that earlier this year, the traditional rulers of Ogbaru had, in a memo to Governor Soludo, lamented the siege on their people and suggested the siting of security outposts around the junctions leading into Amiyi and Ogwuaniocha communities.

"Similarly, only two months ago, the Head of Local Government Administration(HLGA) in Ogbaru, Mr. Ike Alphonsus, in a similar memo to the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs drew attention to the parlous security situation in Ogbaru," Rep Ogene said.

He stated that as a lawmaker, he has taken steps to address the issue, moving a motion titled "Urgent Need to Rescue Ogwuaniocha Community in Ogbaru Federal Constituency, Anambra From the Jaws of Violent Criminal Gangs." The motion highlighted the takeover of the community by criminal gangs, resulting in the displacement of residents, untold hardship, and fear; and has every given opportunity drawn Governor Soludo's attention to the plight of his people.

Rep Ogene's statement underscores the need for immediate government action to address the security crisis in Ogbaru and protect the lives and properties of the people.

He emphasized: "The primary responsibility of any government is to safeguard lives and property. A democracy cannot thrive in an atmosphere of fear, anxiety, and insecurity. We cannot allow criminality to pervade our land as if we live in an ungoverned territory. All individuals who value peace and progress must unite and condemn these faceless violent criminals who hide behind anonymity.

"The current policy of leaving hapless citizens to take care of their security is clearly unworkable. While individual communities are expected to contribute their own quota in securing their environment, their overall security and well-being remains the primary purpose of government - one which the Governor Soludo administration cannot keep shying away from.

"I urge Governor Soludo to take decisive action, assume leadership, and protect our people from further devastation in Ogbaruland. The time for intervention is now."

Welcome to this very important occasion

Today, Anambra celebrates its 33rd anniversary since creation.

On the 27th of August, 1991, the current Anambra state was created out of the old Anambra and today, as we celebrate the 33rd anniversary of its existence, I want to use this opportunity to felicitate with ndị Anambra all over the world, those at home and in the diaspora.

Anambra state was created out of an aspiration that resembles the vision and the mission of the current administration to create a liveable and prosperous homeland. Thirty-three years on, it is safe to say that Anambra is truly on the rise.

Anambra today ranks among the top six largest economy, among the thirty-six states. Anambra state, obviously in terms of poverty indicators , ranks as one of the lowest in Nigeria.

About 65-70 per cent of Anambra state is largely urbanized with four major cities subsisting, and one of them housing the largest industrial and commercial hub and, as they say, the largest market in West Africa.

And so, Anambra today, be it in the social sector, economically, sports-wise, etc, has been rising as a major lead. If you take in the social sector; in education, Anambra is certainly rated as one of the best.

Our students are representing Nigeria all over the world, winning all the laurels and certainly always in the first three secondary school performances.

Today, due to our free education programme in public schools in Anambra, the state currently ranks as number one in terms of having the lowest out of school children.

If you take in terms of technology and innovation, infrastructure revolution, and rural transformation, we are number one. In the area of health, we are second only to Lagos in terms of having the smallest infant mortality rate in the country, and so on and so forth.

The simple message today is that Anambra; the dreams of our forebears, founding fathers and heroes past of creating a land of opportunity and prosperity- a liveable homeland; I want to say that everything put together, that Anambra is largely on the rise.

The state of our State is very strong indeed and all ndị Anambra wherever you may be, despite whatever may be the challenges, everybody has cause to be proud of our homeland- Anambra state.

I want to use this opportunity to REMEMBER several of our heroes past who actually gave Anambra brand names, including the late Rt. Hon. Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe of blessed memory, the founding father of Nigeria (the Zik of Africa), Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu (Ikemba Nnewi), the late Dr. Alex Ekwueme, late Chinụa Achebe, Kenneth Dike, Jerome Udoji, Chuba Okadigbo- the list is quite long. And other Eminent ndị Anambra who have contributed, not only to the growth and foundation of our dear state, Igbo land, South East, and Nigeria, generally.

You also have countless other thousands of ndị Anambra in Anambra and all over the world, who are champions. They deserve to be celebrated - those who are still alive and those who started the journey thirty-three years ago but have died. We remember you all today.

We use this opportunity as well to celebrate our today and our future, celebrate our children and youths who happen to be our bridge to the future, for the wonderful work that they are doing in schools, excelling in Anambra and all over the world.

We celebrate our youths. Recently, much of Nigeria was enveloped in protest, and so on, but our youths did what we are known for - go to work, find a solution, do something. Our youths decided to do something about the challenges rather than occupy the streets to complain

We celebrate our women who bear quite a large chunk of the burden of building the family- raising the families and building our society. Anambra is one state in Nigeria, where, in fact, the women dominate the public sector and various aspects of our lives, and we celebrate our women today.

Our primary school teaching enrollment is about ninety seven per cent dominated by women, our secondary school teachers, eighty nine per cent of the teachers are also women. Our civil service is dominated by over sixty per cent women. So, they constitute the foundation of our society.

Our men also work extremely very hard, our entrepreneurs, we use this opportunity to celebrate all of you.

To the residents of Anambra- non indigenes of Anambra state who are flooding into Anambra as a land of opportunity, as well as those who are contributing positively to the economy and social development of Anambra, we use this opportunity to celebrate you.

And to all our friends and all our partners all over the world- the federal government, our neighbouring states, other states of Nigeria, the international community, the private sector, the investors who are flooding into Anambra as a land of opportunity, helping to create the prosperity that we desire. This is a moment that we celebrate all of you.

Anambra is on the rise. The challenges abound, but our resolve is to continue to work extremely very hard every day to ensure that we continue to take Anambra higher and higher and higher. We are fully on course

We do not have big parties for celebrations, but we are still working very hard - dealing with the issues of security and our environment. We've been receiving all manner of warnings for Anambra to deal with the expected massive flooding. Anambra is preparing as one of the states that will be most badly hit.

The last time it happened, about two years ago, 8 local government areas were totally swamped with flooding, damaging goods and wealth and assets, worth into hundreds of billions of naira, displacing hundreds of thousands of persons. This is going to cost the state a humongous amount of money.

The federal government, for example, sent some 24,000 bags of rice, which we are keeping for this particular major emergency that is expected to happen any moment from now.

This is not a day to drink and dance, even though we have millions of things to celebrate, but we are off to work as usual.

I say to ndị Anambra, we are ndị Anambra. We constitute some of the best entrepreneurs we have in the world and we beckon on you to use our enterprise which we use to excel all over the world, but more importantly, we must deploy our God-given enterprise, resourcefulness, intellect and capacities to transform Anambra state.

Together, let's build that liveable and prosperous homeland. Of course, we can. We have all that it takes to make it happen. We are hopeful and praying for many more years of Anambra moving from glory to glory, height to height in the attainment of our vision to create that liveable and prosperous smart megacity.

In an extempore but lucid speech that echoed the aspirations of Ndi Anambra, the Governor of Anambra State, Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR, on Tuesday marked the 33rd anniversary of the State with a powerful message of progress, unity, appreciation, and unalloyed rededication to a greater future.

His words were beyond just a celebration of the state’s journey since its creation on August 27, 1991; they were also a passionate call to action, a reminder of the shared vision that binds the people of Anambra together.

Governor Soludo eloquently painted a picture of a state that has risen from the aspirations of its founders to become a bastion of economic vitality and social progress in Nigeria.

Today, Anambra is not just another state; it is a thriving entity ranking among the top six largest economies in the country. Despite some challenges, both national and sub-national, the state boasts some of the lowest poverty indicators in Nigeria, a proof of its robust economy and industrious people.

One of the most remarkable highlights of Governor Soludo’s speech was his emphasis on Anambra’s urban transformation. With about 65-70 percent of the state now urbanised, and one of its cities, Onitsha, recognised as the largest industrial and commercial hub in West Africa, Anambra continues to reflect the power of visionary leadership and collective effort.

Quite admirably, Governor Soludo celebrated the outstanding achievements of Anambra in education, where the state’s students have consistently excelled on national and international stages. His Awoist commitment to free education in public schools has not only reduced the number of out-of-school children to the lowest in the country, but has also fostered a culture of excellence that keeps the state in the forefront of development.

Yet, the governor’s vision extends beyond education. He has also recorded remarkable feats in technology, innovation, infrastructure, and rural transformation, proudly asserting that Anambra is a leader in these fields.

In health, the state ranks second only to Lagos in having the lowest infant mortality rate, a feat achieved through deliberate policies and strategic investments in healthcare.

Throughout his speech, Governor Soludo paid homage to the heroes past whose vision and sacrifices laid the foundation for Anambra’s sustained progress.

He honoured the memories of iconic luminaries like Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, Dr. Alex Ekwueme, Chinua Achebe, and many others who have left indelible marks on the state, Igboland, and Nigeria at large. What progress could any society make without the invaluable contributions of women and youth? Virtually not much. The governor praised the resilience and enterprise of Anambra’s youth, who, in the face of national challenges and recent hunger protests, chose to engage in constructive endeavours rather than erupt in violence, embodying the spirit of innovation and hard work that Anambra is known for.

Of course, Anambra’s journey has not been without challenges. For instance, the governor acknowledged the looming threat of massive flooding, a natural disaster that has previously caused widespread destruction in the state. Despite these challenges, the state government, under Governor Soludo’s leadership, remains proactive, preparing to mitigate the impact of such disasters and ensuring the safety and well-being of its people at any time.

In rallying the spirit of collective responsibility, Governor Soludo’s speech was a resonant call to every Anambra indigene, at home and in the Diaspora, to harness their talents, resources, and entrepreneurial spirit towards building a state that is not only economically vibrant but also socially cohesive and environmentally sustainable.

Indeed, one man with a vivid vision like Governor Soludo can provide inspiring leadership, but it takes everyone’s coalesced efforts to transform Anambra into a smart megacity, a livable and prosperous homeland where dreams are realised, and potential are fully harnessed.

Another year, another anniversary. As Anambra State marks its 33rd anniversary today, it is a moment of reflection and celebration, a time to appreciate the monumental strides made and look forward to an even more promising future. Since its creation on August 27, 1991, Anambra State has evolved, overcoming numerous challenges to emerge as a model of progress and development in Nigeria. And under the leadership of the current administration, ably led by Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR, the state has remained true to the dream of its founding fathers: a prosperous and livable homeland for all its citizens.

One of the hallmarks of the current government has been its untiring commitment to security and stability. Recognising that peace is the substratum of development, the administration has implemented comprehensive measures to combat crime and ensure the safety of every citizen. From reclaiming areas previously dominated by criminal elements to enhancing the capacity of law enforcement, Anambra has become a safer place, allowing businesses to thrive and communities to flourish.

Yet, the youth of Anambra are at the heart of the state’s development agenda. Through innovative programmes like “1 Youth, 2 Skills,” the government is equipping young people with the tools they need to succeed in a dynamic economy. With over 13,000 youths already trained in various skills, the initiative is fostering entrepreneurship and reducing unemployment, setting a foundation for sustainable economic growth.

Even more, Anambra’s infrastructural landscape is transforming at an unprecedented pace. Despite the challenges of the rainy season, the government has successfully completed 288 kilometers of roads and is pressing forward with multiple flyover projects. This infrastructure boom is not only enhancing connectivity within the state but is also crucial for the economic activities that drive growth and development.

Environmental sustainability remains a top priority, with the administration dedicating substantial resources to combat soil erosion, a long-standing issue in the state. Projects like the Urban Regeneration Council and community-driven initiatives aim to mitigate erosion, promote urban renewal, and ensure a cleaner, greener Anambra for future generations.

True to the Igbo philosophy of “onye aghana nwanne ya” (no one should be left behind), the state government has implemented several social welfare programmes to support the most vulnerable. Free education up to junior secondary school and complimentary antenatal and delivery services are just a few examples of the administration’s commitment to social equity and community well-being.

With initiatives such as the Anambra Industrial City and the Solution Innovation District, the state is also positioning itself as a hub of economic flourishing in Nigeria. These projects are designed to attract investment, spur innovation, and create jobs, reflecting the administration’s strategic vision for economic diversification and growth.

Association of Radio and Television Technicians in Anambra State (ARTAS) have lamented over the continuous arrest, intimidation and humiliation of their members by some officials of Anambra State government despite court order.

ARTAS whose members were rendered jobless and hungry since June 2024 following the closure of their market by the Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra (Ọcha Brigade), said they were currently finding it difficult to feed.

President of ARTAS, Chief Engr. Sabastine Ebilite, while addressing a press conference, said that not less than ten members of the association, including a nursing mother have been incarcerated by the police after been handed over to by the Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra (Ọcha Brigade).

He appealed to governor Chukwuma Soludo to urgently intervene in the issue because according to him, the market members are law abiding citizens and have been paying their taxes and other levies only for few individuals to contract some of his officials and bent on using them to intimidate and harass them unnecessarily.

According to him, the names of those currently cooling at Awkzu Extension of the Police CID and other police formations to include his Vice Chairman, Chief Isreal Chukwudi, Anayo Ogbonna, Levi Manulu, Ebele Okolo (nursing mother), Master Chigozie Nwaeze (son of Chief Eloka Nnoso, their patron).

The intimidation, according to the President, has forced many of them to fell sick, unconscious and dying, even as many who could not afford to eat again have either gone back to the village or dares the consequences to operate anywhere not minding if to be arrested.

He recalled that trouble started when Electronics Spare parts Dealers Association which was previously operating close to their market at Iweka road purchased a land and built market at Harbour Industrial estate Ogbaru.

"After they built their market and parked out they came and demanded that we join them in the market but we declined because we are not the same. We are registered entity under the CAC and have being doing our business before the coming and registration of Electronics Spare parts Dealers Association. We don't do the same business and own no shops at their new market.

"Since then they have been using the police and Ocha Brigade to intimidate us. If they arrest this one today, they will attest another person tomorrow. From CPS to GMU, Area Command, to Awkzu and State CID. They have arrested over ten of our members, including myself and my vice President," he added.

He further maintained that they have written petitions to the governor, Chief of Staff, the Special Adviser to the governor on Market, Anambra State House of Assembly, Anambra State Market Traders Association, among others but to no avail.

They have also obtained court order which among others urged that status quo should be maintained, which the market leaders believed that the market should be opened since the court order was obtained before it was sealed.

Reacting, the Managing Director of Ocha brigade, Comrade Celestine Anere said that he is not aware of any Court order stopping the agency from carrying out government order.

According to him,they arrested few people who were trying to cause trouble in the Market and took them to the area command.

He also stated that the problem in the market has been long and at time Anambra House of Assembly of intervene and there was agreement that they should relocate to their new site.

Anere said that whatever reason they refused to to move to the new he does not know, noting that his duty was to enforce order from the special Adviser to governor on parks and markets.

" I think,they have problem with the Area command and it is not my business to probe into their problems. What we saw was some people were trying to incite violence and we arrested them and took them to the area command.

" The matter has been on for long time and the Special Adviser to governor on parks and markets told them to relocate to the new market. I don't know what is their problems and it is not my business,the only thing I know is that the Special Adviser to governor asked them to move to the new market and they refused.

"We went there for the first time and sealed the Market and the Anambra State House of Assembly intervened and signed an agreement through the chairman of the market and they all agreed to move to New market and time were given to them to move.

"It is not my business who is who in market,my only concern is that they were causing problems and we need to intervene and save the situation. I think ,there is one particular man,their chairman who is the problem because he refused to move to the new market.

"The house said that if you are repairing ,you have to stay but if you are selling ,you must move to the new market. You cannot be repairing and selling and you say you cannot move to the new Market. Just go there on your own,you will see they are selling and repairing.

"I have not seen any Court order and even if there was such it was after the sealing of the market. If the court says status quo,it means the sealing continue till final determination of the case, because it was sealed already. I don't know the content of the court order and if the court says leave them there ,we cannot do otherwise" he said .

The State officers of the National Union of Market Traders Employers of Nigeria (NUMTEN), Anambra State Council led by Comrade Nnamsom Nwafor-Orizu, on Friday, 23rd August 2024 held its maiden Executive Council meeting in Awka, Anambra State Capital with a call on the traders and market leaders to embrace and identified with the Union created solely to serve as a bridge between the traders and the government.

Speaking during the inaugural meeting held at Horizontal Palace Opposite Kwata Flyover, Awka, the Chairman of the NUMTEN Anambra State Council, Comrade Nnamsom Nwafor-Orizu thanked the members of executive strictly drawn from different markets in the state, for their proactiveness and punctuality, emphasizing that they were given a huge assignment and must be accomplished, saying that their duty was to oversee all the activities going on in the over 64 recognizable markets in Anambra State and as well serve as a bridge between the traders and the government of the day.

According to the Chairman, the Union is domiciled inside the Federal Ministry of Labour and Productivity and was officially gazetted, stating that it was duly registered under the Trade Union Acts and affiliated to Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), adding that they would begin in ernest to carry out the mandate given to the Union's Executive Council members by the Federal government of Nigeria, adding that NUMTEN is in all the states of the federation including FCT.

Comrade Nwafor-Orizu said they were saddled with the responsibility of looking out for ways to help and improve the markets infrastructurally and otherwise and as well care about the traders' welfare, announcing that they were created and backed by the federal government of Nigeria and would be reporting directly to the federal government through the Ministry of Labour and Productivity.

The NUMTEN Anambra State Council Chairman while explaining the role of the Union paid a glowing tribute to the National President of NUMTEN, Comrade Chukwuma Ogu whom, he said, worked assiduously towards the creation of the Union and for his leadership qualities, even as he asked him to continue to churn out plans that make the Union the best in the Council.

He commended the Executive Governor of Anambra State, Professor Chukwuma Soludo for creating the enabling environment for the NUMTEN Executive Council to carry out their assignment and for the good works he is doing in the state.

The Union through the Chairman announced that they have fixed October this year for the official inauguration of the Executive Council members of NUMTEN, Anambra State Council, subject to the National leadership's approval.

In their separate speeches, the Vice President of NUMTEN, Southeast, Comrade Emmanuel Anabuonye and the NUMTEN Anambra State Council's Secretary, Comrade (Amb.) Great Ikechukwu Ugwuoke enjoined the exco members to be alive to their responsibilities and contribute their quota, saying that for the Union to achieved its aims and objectives all hands must be on deck, emphasizing that indolence and unproductivity would not in anyway be condoned, even as they urged the Exco to justify their inclusion and leverage the Union to prove their worths.

The Seniom Foundation, a non-governmental organization dedicated to charity, education, and youth empowerment, has successfully empowered 200 students at the Federal Polytechnic, Oko, Anambra State, with essential digital skills, equipping them for the demands of the modern world.

The two-day training, which took place at the Ufuma campus, was made possible through a partnership between Activ8 Hub, a leading digital company, and the institution’s Students Union Government (SUG). The initiative is part of the Seniom Foundation's ongoing commitment to skills development and capacity building for young people in the community.

Students were introduced to various aspects of the digital world, including basic digital literacy, content creation, internet safety, and the use of digital tools for learning and development. The program featured interactive sessions and hands-on training, giving participants the practical experience needed to thrive in the digital age.

Reflecting on the success of the program, Chief Dozie Donat Okolo, founder and CEO of Seniom Foundation, expressed his excitement and reaffirmed the foundation's dedication to youth empowerment.

“Empowering our youth with digital skills is not just an investment in their future, but in the future of our nation.

We are committed to supporting initiatives that foster growth, innovation, and positive change,” Okolo stated.

Chuwkuma Mezie-Okoye, founder of Activ8 Hub, shared similar sentiments.

The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, BlueShield Security company Limited, High Chief Ọzọ Jeff Nweke, Wednesday, identified poverty and hunger as root causes of cultism and other violent crimes in Awka, the Anambra State capital city.

Nweke, who disclosed this as a convener, Ezinano Community’s security summit, regretted that cultism and violent crimes have claimed many lives in Awka, thereby rendering some fatherless, motherless and childless.

The security summit entitled “Combating/Preventing Violent Crimes and Cultism in Awka Metropolitan City,” was organised by Ezinano community, comprising 20 villages in Awka.

Among the villages are Umudiana Amikwo, Okperi Amikwo, Igweogige Amikwo, Ishiagu Amikwo, Obunagu Amikwo, Onuko Amikwo, Umukwa, Umuogwali, Umueri, Umuogbunu I, Umuogbunu II, Umudioka, Umuogbu, Umumbele, Umuike, Umuonaga, Umujagwo, Umuoruka, Umuenechi, and Umuokpu.

This according to him, were mostly caused because some of the suspects were either jobless and lacked skills to survive, even as lands they could have used to farm had been taken over for various developmental projects since Awka was made capital city.

He also dismissed the claims that big men (wealthy people) were sponsoring cultism in Awka, noting that they were rather fighting to combat cultism through training, skills acquisition and empowerment of the youth and women.

"The bigmen in Awka are not behind crimes. We have heard people saying that bigmen in Awka are those organising and using cultists to kill. I want to correct that impression because it is not true. It is true we know the cultists because we can identify them through their parents, family members, siblings, village heads and so on.

"We don't want them to be killed because killing has rendered many families fatherless, motherless and childless. The solution is about helping them to turn away from crimes and embrace skills. We want the police and other security agents to assist us. away from crimes and criminalities. The best way to do it is to work with us. We want them to rehabilitated, empowered and reintegrated back to society," he added.

Nweke noted that the community would on September disburse N100m to their women in order to enable them establish themselves economically, as well as become employers of labour.

"We are condemning crimes in totality. We want the government to help us empower our youth, organise seminars and workshops frequently to motivate, orientate and encourage our people. The security officers should also assist us with workshops. We can seat down to talk to our people and create jobs for them," he added.

Also speaking, the Anambra State Commissioner for Police, Mr Nnaghe Obono Itam, represented by Assistant Commissioner for Police (Operations), Mr Anieken Eyo, acknowledged that violent crimes could be addressed as a shared responsibility but equally required community for information volunteering.

Earlier, the Deputy Governor of Anambra State, Dr Onyekachukwu Ibezim, represented by Comrade Ọchiche Modilim, said the government was aware of the happenings in Awka and would cede up to 500 slots to Awka indigenes in the next one youth two skills scheme so as to empower them at the end of the programme with N500,000 each to survive.

It is true when they say that in politics, there are no permanent enemies but permanent interests. It is also possible that one singular event, which is not necessarily political, can serve as a poignant affirmation of a nation’s strength in diversity.

Last Saturday, the Governor of Anambra State, Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR, orchestrated not just a routine wedding but a symbolic national showpiece that proved the profound possibilities of unity in a diverse nation.

The occasion was the church wedding of his daughter, Adaora Ifeatu Soludo, to Arinze Ibekwe, held in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital. This was no ordinary event. The couple had earlier exchanged vows in a court wedding in the UK and celebrated their traditional union in the Governor’s hometown of Isuofia, Anambra State. But it was the final celebration in Abuja that truly captured the essence of Nigeria’s collective identity.

Thus, it was no surprise that the wedding was a convergence of Nigeria’s great leaders, as dignitaries from across the political, regional, and social spectrum gathered, setting aside their affiliations to honour the Soludo family.

Among the distinguished guests were President Bola Tinubu, well represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, the Vice President Kashim Shettima, and Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Zulum, who chaired the wedding reception.

The guest list went further to read like a who’s who of Nigeria’s leadership, with current and former governors, senators, ministers, traditional rulers and others too numerous to mention, all united in their respect and admiration for a man who has always championed the cause of a united Nigeria.

Indeed, in sheer grace and grandeur, Adaora and Arinze got joined in a celebration of love; yet in the grander scheme of things, Nigeria's fault lines got blurred in the same singular event.

This goes to show that the didactic import of a pan-Nigerian wedding can be worth a thousand platitudes in patriotism.

In human history, there would always be individuals whose lives subsist as destined epitomes of extraordinary purpose and unparalleled achievement. They are enigmas who possess an innate ability to shatter conventions, break long-standing jinxes, and blaze trails where none existed before. By uncanny destiny, the Governor of Anambra State, Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR, is such an enigma.

The Governor’s life continues to be an instructive treatise on the Nietzschean concept of the Übermensch, the idea of an individual who transcends conventional boundaries and creates new values in a world of endless possibilities. From his early days as a brilliant student and academic, his stint as a revolutionary CBN governor, his current role as an exemplary leader, to his amazing family story as he just gave out his first daughter in marriage, Professor Soludo has consistently demonstrated a unique pattern of inherent jinx-breaking and pace-setting greatness.

Of course, his journey as a jinx breaker began in the halls of academia. As a first-class student, he didn’t merely excel; he dominated, winning numerous best prizes during his educational journey. This early demonstration of intellectual prowess laid the foundation for a life dedicated to pushing the boundaries of knowledge and achievement.

In the world of academia, becoming a professor is a significant achievement. Becoming one at the age of 38 is nothing short of extraordinary. Soludo’s ascension to the rank of Professor of Economics at such a young age broke age-related conventions in the ivory tower.

When his career took him to the public space of governance, Professor Soludo kept on the streak of excellence. Twenty years ago, as the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, he initiated a banking reform that was nothing short of revolutionary. His audacious moves reshaped the country’s financial sector, consolidating and strengthening banks, and setting Nigeria on a path to greater financial stability and growth. He thus challenged and changed the status quo for the greater good.

As the Governor of Anambra State, Prof. Soludo has continued his trend of breaking jinxes. He shattered a 31-year-old impasse by building a befitting State House in Awka, the state capital. This act not only provided a proper seat of government, but also symbolised progress and the dawn of a new era in state governance. Also, his introduction of free education in state basic education, from primary to secondary school levels, is unprecedented in the state.

Perhaps one of the most intriguing aspects of Prof. Soludo’s jinx-breaking ability today is how it extends into his family life. The recent traditional marriage ceremony of his daughter, Adaora, to Arinze Ibekwe in Isuofia, Anambra State, broke a 143-year female gender wedding hiatus in the Soludo lineage. For three generations, daughters had been a rarity in the Soludo clan until Professor Soludo himself broke this ‘jinx’ by having four daughters. The joyous occasion of giving out his first daughter in marriage marks yet another barrier shattered.

The consistent pattern of breaking records and setting new standards in his academic, professional, political, and personal life paints the picture of an exceptional individual. Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo embodies the qualities of a game-changing leader, one who sees beyond current limitations and works tirelessly to create new realities. Yes, it was exactly one week yesterday, on August 4th, 2024.

My friends and I had finished a gathering we had somewhere in Awka, the capital city of Anambra State, which though didn't start early enough on Saturday, August 3. We broke the day there, as the gathering officially ended at about 2.am.

Awka had been revered as a ‘happening city’ where activities, especially nightlife, remain never go off, till almost the following night.

Being an Awka-based practicing journalist, I had also attended many other functions, meetings, and media-related assignments in the past, especially during emergencies and political periods, from where I safely returned home late in the night, even at such odd hours as 2.am, 3.am and so on, without anybody or group interfering with my movement.

These, and other heap of confidence so far built over more than ten years of my stay and practice of journalism in the city made me have less anxiety over my safe return to my residence that fateful Sunday night after our dismissal. Although I hear of and also write many news of the various crimes and security happenings in Awka on a daily basis, I never knew that the city had currently grown to be in its most unsecured status in the history of human existence.

So, as usual, after our gathering, I saddled on my somewhat new ride and mounted the road, after my friends and colleagues had taken their own direction. I was the only one among us going to my side.

And, as is usually the case, some streets were still on, especially the ever-busy Abakaliki Street (Club Road), as at that 2:09 am when I took off and was cruising to my residence.

It, however, became unusual, as I bent towards the direction of my destination, Off the Abakaliki Street before the Queen Suit Hotel, as a yellow-coloured tricycle (Keke) double-crossed me, with three ferocious and cantankerous men onboard.

That area is known for its quietness, darkness, and loneliness, especially in the night, and early hours of the day when the shop owners in the area are closed or yet to open for the day.

“Come down from the bike,” one of the boys said, brandishing a gun in his hand.

As I was trying to resist, question, and understand what was happening, the other one among the two persons who alighted from the tricycle drew closer and leveraged the tool of hot slap to order me not to waste their time.

As the slap was still echoing some bee sounds in my ear, the third person who remained inside the tricycle joined his voice to warn me not to delay them further; even as few cars that approached the area at that moment all reversed upon seeing the tricycle standing at the center of the road, with armed men standing by.

With courage and instigation that came from nowhere, as this was going on, I immediately geared up my motorcycle in a bid to flee, while one of them immediately cocked his gun, and the other pushed me down on motion, together with the motorcycle. And we crashed.

As I was struggling to get up, one of them grabbed up the motorcycle, saddled on it, and zoomed off in the company of the Keke, in which the other two had already mounted; and they sped off.

Immediately after the scene cleared, some people rushed to assist me, as they comforted me and stopped a tricycle for me, which I boarded in the company of some people, and was ridden home, after I declined to go to the hospital that night.

As I got home, and even while still inside the Keke, I started making calls, beginning with informing the friends I had just finished staying with before the incident, and then calling the Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam; the State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ikenga Tochukwu, and some other security personnel I could reach on phone then, notifying them of what happened. I also requested their assistance in facilitating the apprehension of the hoodlums and recovering my stolen motorcycle — a ride that had been of great help to me in meeting up with my various journalistic engagements, both timeously and economically.

It was not until later in the morning that I clearly saw and began to feel the real pains of the injuries I sustained from the incident the time hoodlums pushed me down when I took the highly regretted dangerous risk to escape.

While I could not comfortably sleep that night, the following morning, as early as 6:30 am, I was already dressed up for church. But the pains couldn't allow me. So, I had to begin finding transportation means to a hospital for urgent medical attention.

However, on second thought, I decided to trek down the axis where I had been attacked the previous night, though still making some phone calls and raising alarms.

Moments later, I was already at the Abakaliki Street. Lo and behold, a motorcycle that looked exactly like mine was dumped along the roadside.

“Could this not be my bike? Or, are these criminals relaxing and drinking somewhere around here in celebration of their successful ‘outing’ last night?” I reasoned aloud.

As I drew much closer, with some premeditated phone numbers in mind to call immediately if something strange was encountered, or if the men were drinking there; lo and behold, it was my motorcycle; abandoned, without anyone in sight as the parker.

What could have happened that led to the motorcycle being abandoned there?

The carburetor of my motorcycle had developed a fault a few weeks ago, such that it usually overfloats most times when I park it, especially when there is enough fuel in it. This made me start locking up the fuel tap each time I park the bike and unlock it when I'm about to go.

Now, this mechanical fault has believably become my saving grace this time; little wonder why I had been reluctant to go fix it since about two weeks ago it started.

Now, before taking off from the venue of our gathering that night, I forgot to unlock the fuel tap as I usually do; and so, the only fuel inside the carburetor was what sustained my ride to the point where the hoodlums robbed me. Unknown to me and them, the carburetor fuel was almost finished, even though there was enough fuel in the fuel tank.

So, men and brethren, it was this remaining fuel in the carburetor that eventually finished up along the road when the criminals were fleeing with the bike, and then, the motorcycle locked up without any sign. Because they obviously could not begin to look for the fault (being a stolen bike), for the fear of being apprehended in the process; they disappointedly dumped and abandoned it there along the road, which was where I saw it the following morning, to the glory of God. This occurred just a few treks away from where the robbery occurred, implying that they didn't even go far with the motorcycle before it locked up — a miracle I believe they might suspect to be a security lock, as it usually happens without giving signs.

Because I couldn't find the key on the motorcycle, I rolled it to a place and parked it there; then went back home, brought the spare key, and started it, after having switched on the fuel tap and given enough time for the carburetor to absorb fuel. Men and brethren, that was how I miraculously recovered and regained the ownership of my lost motorcycle, all to the glory of God.

With that accomplished, the next concern was seeking urgent medical attention, because the various degrees of injuries I sustained on different parts of my body were still very acerbic, which include part of my cheek, part of my eyes, and limbs. Consequently, therefore, I mounted my motorcycle and hurried off to the hospital to take care of myself. And since then, I have been on medication till date, with many significant differences showing already on my body.

Many of the people I have encountered since the day of this incident have shown concern, empathy, and sympathy, but not without asking me what happened to me, especially given the degrees of injuries and scars on my body.

However, because of the blame I perceived would trail me when I should tell the people the real story, especially that aspect of the daring and highly regretted risk that I took by staking my life to drag a motorcycle with armed hoodlums; and because of my reluctance to be recounting the same long story to different people over and over; I decided to be telling them that it was just an accident that I had, whenever anyone asks me what happened after seeing the injuries all over my body. In fact, I even started this the very night the incident happened.

So, as it stands today, many people, including some of my biological relatives, still hold the belief that it was just an accident that I had, as I told them, without knowing yet the real thing that happened to me. Although it's also an accident, to some extent; only a few persons I told know the true story. Meanwhile, some are not even aware that anything happened to me at all.

Howbeit, now that I have almost fully recovered; with appreciation to God, and with sincere apologies to those I somewhat lied to about that; I have finally made up my mind to tell the world the true story of what actually happened to me.

So, men and brethren, this is my story!

Join me to thank God, especially for sparing my life this time again, as many have died through this kind of incident and still lost the dragged item.

It is indeed a testimony and a great lesson to me.

After a hiatus of 10 years, Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission, ANSIEC has finally announced the conduction of local government elections in the state.

A notice signed by the State Chief Electoral Officer, Genevieve Osakwe, ESQ, revealed that the election will be held on September 28, 2024.

The notice reads as follows; "Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission wishes to inform all registered Political Parties and the general public that Local Government Elections in the State will be held on Saturday, September 28, 2024.

"Election Timetable/Schedule of Activities and other details can be collected from the Headquarters of the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission, Awka, from Wednesday, 14th August, 2024", she concluded.

With the announcement, the state's Election Commission has initiated the process of election in its entirety.

The decision has been welcomed by the citizens of the state who have been eagerly waiting for this day.

The local government elections are expected to witness a significant turnout as the citizens are excited to exercise their franchise.

The authorities have also assured full transparency in the election process, ensuring free and fair conduct for all participants.

This election is considered to be a crucial step in the evolution of democracy in the state.

It is on record that Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo had always demonstrated readiness to conduct the Council polls.

The state government has also encouraged participation from all sections of the society, including women, youth, and marginalized communities, urging them to come forward and contest in the elections.

Overall, the announcement of the local government elections has been received positively by the citizens of the state, indicating their eagerness to be a part of the democratic process and shape the future of their respective communities.

The Coordinator, TB Network in Anambra state, Ifeyinwa Unachukwu says despite efforts by the government and non-governmental organization, tuberculosis remains a significant health challenge in the area as many people continue to suffer due to limited access to diagnosis and treatment.

Unachukwu disclosed this in a paper presentation during an interaction with civil society organisations and the media as part of the Fund TB project being implemented under the Strengthening Civic Advocacy and Local Engagement (SCALE), funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

During the presentation entitled, “Current Policy and Budgetary Environment: practical tips on budget analysis for tuberculosis reporting in Anambra State,” Unachukwu noted that the Fund TB project is targeted at improved funding for TB from both public and private sectors, through advocacy.

“We have the National TB Policy Framework, the National Health Act of 2014, the Public Procurement Act, and the National TB and Leprosy Control Program. In Anambra state, there are the state health law, the state health policy, health insurance scheme and the audit law, which had been before the assembly for two years.

“But, there are challenges around enforcement and implementation, insufficient state-level framework, monitoring and accountability. Adequate and sustained funding is crucial to combat TB effectively. Without it, the state’s ability to complement and expand TB interventions will be severely constrained”.

“The Budgetary challenges to TB funding include inadequate allocation, delayed fund disbursement, lack of TB specific earmarked funds, competing health priorities and the dependence on donors who are already getting tired. There is need for sustainable domestic funding as well as improved budget transparency”.

The Program Manager, Gender Perspective and Social Development Centre, Oge Ozoemena, had in a welcome address, remarked that the goal of the Fund TB project is to enhance and sustain domestic investment to bridge the substantial 70% funding gap in Anambra, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Delta and Imo states.

“We are currently implementing a project under the FUND TB Cluster, with Policy Alert as the anchor, in partnership with Palladium Group. Together, we shall enhance our advocacy efforts, foster greater engagement and ultimately bridge the funding gap to manage TB effectively in Anambra State," she stated.

The M&E Focal Person for the State Tuberculosis Control Program, Chiamaka Oguejiofor, explained that tuberculosis is curable while early detection and treatment increase the likelihood of survival.

“We must work to get the missed cases. If immune system is strong, somebody can be infected and remain healthy. But when immune system is down, the signs and symptoms come out.

She listed the symptoms of TB to include: fever, cough of about two weeks or more, shortness or difficulty in breathing, as well as tiredness, chest pain, loss of appetite, night sweat and coughing out blood.

“Our achievements include: setting up of fully furnished TB Situation Room, expansion of microscopic testing to flood prone, hard to reach areas not covered by GeneXpert, introduction of wellness Keke mobile diagnostic approach, and scale up of GeneXpert machines from 9 to 13”.

In a goodwill message, the Chairman, Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities, JONAPWD, Anambra State Chapter, Ugochukwu Okeke, remarked, “my coming here has increased my knowledge about TB. I will ensure that our people at the local government level are mobilised to disseminate the information to the grassroots”.

For Ngozi Maduechesi from the TB Network, “Nothing makes us happier than what is happening here today. We see our partnership with the media a huge boost. This interaction is useful and should be sustained,” she advised.

The Executive Director of Gender Perspective and Social Development Centre, GPSDC, Eucharia Anekwe, was happy with the commitments harvested from various stakeholders from the civic space and the media.

“Thank you so much everyone, I am optimistic that this intervention will succeed in Anambra State especially with the level of cooperation we’ve enjoyed and still hope to enjoy from all government officials we have interacted with on this campaign.

“As we put the past behind us, our hope is to see the state government increase the TB budget line from N50 million to something far higher and more especially to see the money released promptly for programmes and activities which will set our feet on the path of eradicating tuberculosis in our dear state,” Anekwe concluded.

Paucity of funds has slowed down the response to the increasing incidents and prevalence of tuberculosis in Anambra State.

The Manager of the State Tuberculosis, Leprosy and Burili Ulcer Control Program, Dr Ugochukwu Chukwulobelu, disclosed this at a one-day Consultative Breakfast meeting on Tuberculosis with the Private Sector, organized by the Gender Perspective and Social Development Centre, as part of its Fund TB Project in Anambra State.

The project implemented by five NGOs across five South-East and South-South states, is funded by USAID through the Palladium Group, under its Strengthening Civic Advocacy and Local Engagement (SCALE).

Represented by the Monitoring and Evaluation Officer, Chiamaka Oguejiofor, the TB Program Manager noted with dismay that despite being a significant public health challenge, the response to TB has been majorly donor-driven.

“323 persons in every 100,000 have TB while we record 219 per 100,000 new TB cases TB annually. However, the summary of our problem is funding. If there is funding, sustainability will be assured even in the face of donor fatigue,” the Manager said.

“Please, I am categorically saying that despite several memos we wrote last year, none was approved and no money was released to us from the budgeted amount.

Be that as it may, Chukwulobelu said Anambra state has about 800 DOT sites, 14 Gene Xpert machines, 13 Gene Xpert sites and 1 Truenat machine among others which have greatly increased access to treatment.

The Program Manager explained that despite the deadly nature of the disease, a patient who has been undergoing treatment for a week is incapable of infecting anyone around him.

“It is important that people understand this so we can reduce stigmatization that comes with the disease. Also note that treatment and diagnosis for tuberculosis is free in Anambra state.

“We have centres that offer such services across all local government areas,” he concluded as he pleaded with private sector players to come in to fill the wide funding gap.

A civil society activist, Chima Asomba, also reemphasized the benefits of private sector involvement in eradicating tuberculosis in the area. “With the transparency and accountability I have seen in TB control programme in Anambra State, I assure you that you can invest in DOT facilities, diagnostic tools, as well as education and sensitisation, which is at the root of the TB response.

“In some local governments like Awka North, Orumba North and others, we don’t have diagnostic tools for TB. You people can help to bridge the gap. It will go a long way in boosting domestic efforts towards eradicating TB in the state”.

The Executive Director, GPSDC, Eucharia Anekwe, spoke further in the same direction. “You can design the souvenirs for your company or business centre with a message such as“Stop TB”. We have some TB patients that are malnourished. You can support them with nutritious feeding. Some of them need transport to go for treatment. You can meet that need. You can equally support outreaches against tuberculosis”.

Earlier in an address of welcome, GPSDC’s Program Manager, Oge Ozoemena, expressed confidence in the ability of the private sector players, especially those in attendance at the meeting to assist in improving the TB response in the area.

In their separate speeches, Emmanuel Nwachukwu of the UKJ Ventures promised to support the campaign by GPSDC within their means, while Emmanuel Chukwuemerie of Damarvey Pharmacy, also pledged assistance even as he called for a sustained awareness creation campaign about the disease.

“The awareness is still very low. However, TB is a very dangerous disease which most of our people do not know about. There is need for more sensitisation. We promise to partner with your organisation in anyway we can. Please, carry on with this advocacy”.

For her part, Chisom Ukwuoma, who represented the Rose Specialist Hospital Onitsha, said,“We like what this initiative is all about. As someone who had lived with a TB patient some years ago, I know what it means to suffer from it. We will also provide support in any possible way”.

Ugochukwu Ozoemena of Bellgo Global, equally pledged allegiance to the campaign. “I will reach out to a couple of friends who will come to assist this campaign in the interest of our helpless brothers and sisters”.

In a presentation on Transformative Budgeting and Financing for Improved Tuberculosis Services in Nigeria, Faith Paulinus, the Head, Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning, Fund TB Cluster, called on the Anambra State Government to show greater commitment to the fight against TB through increased domestic budgeting and releases,

“We also called on the private sector to incorporate TB into their companies’ corporate social responsibility, CSR, as an excellent way of supporting TB efforts in the state.

“You can acquire GeneXpert machines. You can provide funds to subsidize TB diagnosis. You can also help to create TB awareness in the workplace”.

The State TB Network Coordinator, Ify Unachukwu had earlier stressed the need for separate funding for different programmes in the health sector. “This is important so that we will know how much government budgets for a particular program each year instead of lumping everything up.

“We have experimented the private sector involvement in health care provision in many communities and it worked well. I wish the government could reach out to the private sector players for assistance around TB program in the state,”Unachukwu said.
