Hectares of land in Omor, Ayamelum LGA of Anambra State; where some farmers cultivated rice seedlings provided for them by the Minister of Women Affairs, Barrister Mrs Uju-Kennedy Ohanenye, has been inspected.
After the rice seedlings were distributed to the farmers in January, there was also rice cultivation technical training given to them by the Ministry of Women Affairs in collaboration with CGC Nigeria Limited, and Green Agriculture West Africa Ltd, GAWAL.
During the distribution of the seedlings witnessed by the Traditional ruler of Ndiukwuenu, Igwe Onyeka Onwurah, the farmers were told that the gesture would help them to be meaningfully engaged for the eight years President Bola Tinubu would be on seat.
Speaking during the farm inspection visit, some of the beneficiaries through their representatives, including Mrs Christiana Okafor; from Igbakwu, Mrs Augustina Odenigbo; from Omasi, and Mrs Theresa Ojindu; from Ifite-Ogwari, thanked the Women Affairs Minister for helping them in subsistence and commercial rice farming, thereby helping to mitigate hunger by ensuring surplus.
Others, including Mrs Christiana Egwuatu; from Omor, and Mrs Veronica Emengini; from Umueje, also joined in thanking the Minister for her kind gesture.
The farmers under the name; “Anambra Young Women Rice Farmers” also appealed to their benefactor to still assist them with fertilizer, chemicals for pest and weed control, as well as seed money to hire labourers, saying that rice needs “maintenance” for good yield.
Earlier, the Facilitator of the programme, Barrister Mike Ikegbunam, appealed to the Minister to help prevail on relevant authorities to revamping the “moribund” Lower Anambra Irrigation Project, Anambra-Imo River Basin Development Authority at Omor to encourage all-season rice farming, thereby helping to ensure food sufficiency and other chain of benefits.
He said that about eight hundred farmers across eight communities in Anambra State benefited in the pilot phase of the programme the Minister fashioned out in order to positively touch lives of women in agriculture, adding that more people are expected to benefit from the Minister’s largesse, just as he disclosed that cassava and other items will be added in the programme.
Barrister Ikegbunam re-emphasized the need for support to mechanize the farmers’ operations and increase productivity, and encouraged the state government to partner with the Minister for more impact.
He prayed God to continue blessing the Minister, and cause her detractors to have a rethink and allow her continue practicalizing the President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

The South East zonal youth leader of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Hon. Romanus-Chinedu Eze has emphasised the need for the youths of Enugu North Senatorial zone of Enugu state to get actively involved in the governance of the area.

A former leader of Onitsha North Local Government Legislative Council of Anambra state, Hon. Eze told Newmen in Awka, Anambra on Thursday that Enugu North Senatorial zone has not experienced the required development since the inception of the current democratic dispensation in 1999, essentially because the youths have not played active role in the recruitment of their political leaders.

He stated that as an indigene of Enugu North Senatorial zone from Udenu local government, former Special Assistant to former Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, and, a youth involved in active politics and entrepreneurship, he viewed as a personal responsibility to galvanise his fellow youths in the zone toward charting a course for the rapid development of the zone.

He explained that a youth summit which the theme is: "Creativity: The Key To Survival" he slated to hold tomorrow at Owerre Amagu Hall, Orba, Udenu local government area was part of his deliberate commitment to empower and mobilise his co-youths towards becoming not only economically self-reliant, but, to show more interest in the leadership recruitment for both community and political positions.

He stated that while a former Economic Adviser to the former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Professor Osita Ogbu would deliver the keynote address, others who would also speak at the event included Professor Ifechi Ndianaefo, Professor Mark Chikani, and, Rev. Canon Wilfred Nwankwo while a former Commissioner of Finance in Enugu state, Chief Godson Nnadi would chair the summit.
Hon. Eze explained that the summit has no political party or religious denominational affiliation, but, that it is a gathering deliberately convened for the youths in the senatorial zone to come together and get sensitised to take up the challenges of developing their zone.

To commemorate June 12 Democracy Day, the Senator Polycarp Nwite Foundation for Democratic Accountability (SPNFDA) has said that issues threatening the sustainability of democracy in Nigeria, include widespread hunger and insensitivity of the political class in the face of challenging economy, as it urged government to take urgent action to restore public trust in democratic governance.

The foundation named after the late 3rd Republic Senator, Polycarp Nwite, a democracy advocate and former senior Presidential aide, said that democracy ought to inspire hope, rather than despair, as it identified

Insensitivity of the political class and declining faith in political leadership as being responsible for the widespread disillusionment among Nigerian youths – the successor leadership generation – many of whom are now turning their back on the nation in preference for foreign democracies.

A ‘June 12 Democracy Day’ statement on Wednesday June 12, 2024, signed by its Executive Director, Mr. Michael Nwite, emphasized that these factors posed a significant threat to the sustainability of democracy in Nigeria, as they bruise the soul of democracy - the people.

It saluted the courage and selfless sacrifices of Nigeria’s Heroes of Democracy; and also commended the resilience and ingenuity of the Nigerian populace in weathering the current biting economic situation in the nation.

The foundation said it is concerned that “These factors in addition to diverse other economic challenges and the lingering intractable security problem in the country, have become the oxygen fuelling criminality and the current exodus by young Nigerians to foreign lands, in search of better economic and social fortunes, referred to as ‘Japa’ syndrome in local parlance.

“For the survival and sustenance of democracy in the nation, government must take urgent steps to stimulate real productivity, address the current alarming rate of unemployment, criminality and disillusionment among young Nigerians, which it said is fast destroying the fibre and potential of the youth demography and pose a significant threat to the nation’s security, development, and future.”

Mr. Nwite said further, “It’s no longer in doubt that the impact of the challenging economic environment, scarce opportunities, dysfunctional social infrastructure and weak institutions, have continued to erode the faith of the Nigerian youth demography in democracy and turning their backs in droves on the nation.”

He urged government to address these challenges and work towards regaining the trust of Nigerian youths, “who are the future of the country’s democracy.”

The foundation expressed hope in President Bola Tinubu’s ability to take the necessary steps to address these challenges and restore the faith of Nigerian youths in democracy.

It charged “President Tinubu administration to motivate youths for sustainable development in our democracy by offering opportunities for youth participation in governance and decision-making in job and wealth creation, by supporting youth-led initiatives and entrepreneurship, essentially, in agriculture, social and economic driven technology.

“Nigeria with huge resources in arable land and human capital has no business being listed as a nation with food insecurity. All government needs is an intentional policy backed up by sustainable investments in agriculture – including right training in relevant skills in food production, preservation and value chain development.

“Government must also encourage robust civic engagement by creating safe spaces for all citizens to express themselves and engage in civic activities – fostering a culture of inclusivity, diversity and enthronement of an evidence-based political system that is transparent and credible enough to evoke patriotic zeal and belief in our people.

“Leaders at all levels must be honest and intentional about reducing the cost of governance, strategically
redirecting the Nigerian youths towards sustainable development and harnessing their potential for national growth, by implementing policies addressing the root causes of youth disillusionment.”

Two United States based International organisations, Life Care Coalition Outreach (LCCO) and Igwe Davison Okafor and Mercy Ikeanyi Foundation Incorporation (iDOMi), Wednesday, concluded a two training for 66 guidance and counsellors in Anambra State on social emotional learning.



The two days train the trainers events held in Awka, the Anambra State capital, under the theme, envisioning an Ecological classroom to enhance knowledge in social emotional learning, was geared towards enhancing and addressing the overall needs of students, for improved learning and societal development.



Speaking at the occasion, the Coordinator, iDOMi, Dr Chinedu Ikeanyi, explained that it was parts of their desire to fulfil the continuous calls from the successive State governments for repatriation of their knowledge to enrich the society.



According to him, with social emotional learning, all the students would learn equally in diverse ways to impact positively in society because only those emotionally sound could adapt to learning easily.



Ikeanyi, while noting that the programme would be sustained in the same way they sustained their free medical programmes and scholarships, hinted that they would study the impact to see how to improve on it in subsequent years for overall good of Anambra State residents.



Contributing, the LCCO Coordinator, Mrs Victoria Oby Anago, explained that the programme would also empower counsellors to act as social workers in their respective schools while improving the education system.



Anago added that the programme would instill in the teachers knowledge of improving in their subject teaching competence, while reaching out to all the students and enable them access all the general education, improve their skills and capacities to become useful to society.



The Visiting speaker, Dr Sevaughn Banks, professor of social Work, California state University, Stanislaus,Thurrock,California, argued that ecological classroom was among the many educational modal useful for addressing students learning and educational needs, while customising the school resources.



In a vote of thank you, the Director, Education Services, Anambra State Post-Primary School Service Commission, Mrs Onwuka Ogonna, commended the organisers, assuring that the State would sustain the partnership, as well as monitor the counselors for optimum implementation of what they have learnt for improved education.



Earlier, Chairman of the occasion and Southeast zonal Vice President, Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU), Dr Churchill Okonkwo, hailed the initiative, noting that it would help teachers to improve in their teaching and learning in the changing world for impactful development.



Okonkwo, who argued that there was no need of doing the same thing same way and expecting a better result, urged teachers to invest on research to gather more knowledge of new technologies and methods of teaching so as to be fit in transferring same in the evolving world.

Anambra State governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, Saturday, opened a neighbourhood market of 50 shops called Solution Arena fruits and vegetables and solution arena grills and sundries.

Solution Arena, situated at Abakaliki street junction (club zone), Okpuno in Awka South Local Government Area, is equipped with many facilities, including electricals, lockup shops, open stalls, convenience, water supply, power supply and enough parking lots.

The governor, who praised Hon. Osita Ọnuko, the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer (MD/CEO) of Awka Capital Territory Development Authority (ACTDA), for setting up the facility, noted that more would be constructed across the State to decongest streets of hawkers.

According to him, Solution Arena would serve as modal, a prototype, concept and an idea of his renewed efforts to solve the problems of street trading, while building a liveable and prosperous city.

"It will be replicated at several parts of the State to solve the problems of streets trading so that our women and others who toil everyday trading or hawking will be brought together to a safer and serene atmosphere. This place shall be free for all traders who wish to occupy any of the shops. No need of standing on the highways or to block roads or trade under a dirty environment," he added.

He explained that his government was set to establish a similar project at Awka, Nnewi, Onitsha, Ekwulọbịa, among other urban and semi-urban areas in Anambra State in order to accommodate hundreds of Anambra petty traders and hawkers.

Earlier speaking, the MD/CEO of ACTDA, Hon. Osita Ọnuko, said the project was a clear testament of APGA philosophy of onyeaghana nwanne ya "leave no one behind,", adding that Soludo's administration was determined to turn Awka into a befitting State capital.

Ọnuko further charged the management committee setup to manage the facility to be committed, shun corruptions and thinker solutions for it effective management.

Police Arrest Suspect, officers fingered

Detectives from the Force Headquarters of the Nigeria Police Force, NPF, Abuja, have nabbed one Mr. Peter Chijioke Okaa, a native of Nnobi, Idemili -South LGA of Anambra state in connection with alleged plot to abduct, and, assassinate a veteran of the United States of America, US, Army, Mr. Bonaventure Ezekwenna who incidentally hails from the same Nnobi town.

Mr. Okaa who is said to be a "self-acclaimed chief priest, and, popularly known as"ikonso", "ezeudo" and "ezemmo" was arrested following a petition to the Inspector -general of police, IGP, by the US army veteran, Mr. Bonaventure Ezekwenna wherein he alleged threat to his life; threat to commit arson in his Nnobi house, instigation of authorities against him, conspiracy to frame him up with false, malicious and trump up allegations at Zone 13 police command, Ukpo on a matter already before the Court, and, intimidation with intent to extort money from him dated 16th November, 2023.

Mr. Ezekwenna in his petition, a copy of which was obtained by this reporter also fingered some officers at the police Zone 13 command, Ukpo, and, Onitsha Correctional Centre, Anambra state as accomplices in the plot to abduct, and, assassinate him.

Reliable sources with the police formation revealed that Mr. Okaa was picked up by officials from Force Criminal Investigation Department, FCID, at his home in Nnobi, and, was first taken to the Nnobi police station, and, from there transferred to the police Zone 13 command, Ukpo, for prosecution by the legal department of the zone.

When contacted, the zone 13 command public relations officer, ZPRO, superintendent of police, SP Josephine Ihunwo simply said "the case is being handled by the Force Headquarters, that is all I can tell you".

Meanwhile, Ezekwenna who in his petition to the IGP, written on his behalf by his lawyer, Mr. J. O. Okakwu of Orator Legal Practitioners narrated that his ordeal started on Sunday, August 20, 2023, when he received two text messages on his mobile phone from unknown person using two different phone numbers.

He stated that the person introduced himself as "assassin", and, that he had been paid the sum of N500,000, to assassinate him. Ezekwenna said that the self-acclaimed assassin had demanded that he should pay him the sum of N250,000 so that he would not execute the contract against him, and, even promised to reveal the person who hired him if he paid him the N250,000. He said that the so-called hired assassin had given him till 12noon of that fateful August 20, 2023 to pay him, warning him that he already knew every details about him, including where he lives, and, his movements.

Ezekwenna narrated further that when he ignored all the threats and entreaties from the purported assassin, the evil-person again issued another threat that he would not only kill him, but, would set his home at Nnobi ablaze, and, also kill all his family members since he has proven to be "stubborn".

Ezekwenna narrated further that he later reported the matter to the Department of State Services,DSS, Awka, Anambra state command who eventually traced his callers to the Onitsha Prisons where Beninoire, Mr. Claude Gounou Aloukou, but, who introduced his name as "Oluwafemi Salako" is being remanded in connection with a case in Chief Magistrate Court, Nnobi, Idemili -South LGA, charge No. MIG/12C/2023 , bothering on giving false information to the Inspector -general of police against Mr. Bonaventure Ezekwenna. Mr. Okaa according Ezekwenna , is also a co-defendant along with Salako in the matter.

Ezekwenna in his petition told the IGP that Salako and officials of the Onitsha Prisons were the only persons who knew him in that prison and that Mr. Okaa had been a regular visitor to the prison because sometime in 2022 police arrested him in connection with the mysterious death of one Azubuike Nwokolo in a hotel whose private parts were allegedly found to be harvested.

Ezekwenna further stated that he was later to receive another threat text message on Saturday September 16, 2023, and, a purported police invitation emanating from police Zone 13 command, Ukpo, issued by O/C ZIB inviting him to the command on allegations bothering on attempted murder, violence and criminal trespass.

He said that the invitation which was extended to him via his WhatsApp platform was addressed to one "Bonaventure Eze Ogbonna", when his real name is "Bonaventure Ezekwenna".

Ezekwenna in his petition on his behalf by his lawyer had reminded the IGP that "there are 2 ongoing cases against Mr. Peter Chijioke Okaa and Mr. Olufemi Salako (aka, Claude Gounou Aloukou) at Chief Magistrate Court, Nnobi with Charge No. MIG/12C/2023 between COP v Chijioke Peter Okaa and Mr. Olufemi Salako, where our client (Mr. Bonaventure Ezekwenna) is the nominal complainant in the criminal case, while he is the plaintiff in the civil case in suit No. HID/108/2023, at the High Court, Oba, Anambra state.

"It is our client's believe that these threats to assassinate him, his family members and false allegations at Zone 13 are all attempts by Mr. Peter Chijioke Okaa and Oluwafemi Salako to intimidate him from his quest for justice in their crimes and violation against his fundamental human rights", the petition read further.

It was authoritatively gathered that the Force Headquarters after a thorough investigation into Mr. Ezekwenna's petition co-ordinated by a Deputy Inspector -general of police during which some officers at the police Zone 13 command Ukpo were interrogated, the Force Headquarters had given stern order to the police Zone 13 command Ukpo, legal department to do a diligent prosecution of the matter to ensure that justice was done.

It was a glorious day for Nigeria as Benjamin Wayo and Elizabeth Ebele Elue, both from Nigeria, achieved a resounding victory, claiming the top two spots at the 2024 Toastmasters District Championship of Public Speaking Contest.

This triumph marks a milestone for Nigeria and the Toastmasters community in West Africa.

The annual conference of District 94, held at the ECOWAS Commission in Abuja from May 22 to 25, brought together members of Toastmasters International from across West and Central Africa. The event featured educational sessions, a keynote address by former Nigerian ambassador to Greece, Nimi Akinkugbe, and the highly anticipated District Championship of Public Speaking contest.

Benjamin Wayo, a veterinary doctor, emerged as the first-place winner, with Elizabeth Ebele Elue, a banker, securing the second position. Wayo expressed his gratitude for the support he received, stating, "This Contest will probably be the most challenging I have ever gone through... I am simply Grateful." This victory marks Wayo's third District Championship title, having previously won in 2019 and 2020.

This triumph marks Benjamin Wayo's third District Championship title in Public Speaking, a remarkable feat that solidifies his reputation as an exceptional orator. He previously won the title in 2019 in Bamako, Mali, and again in 2020, in a virtual District Contest. With this victory, Wayo advances to the Region Quarterfinals, where the top performers will secure a spot in the semifinals. The ultimate goal is a coveted place in the World Championship of Public Speaking, scheduled for August 2024 in California, where the world's best speakers will gather to showcase their skills.

Toastmasters International, a nonprofit organization founded in 1924, aims to build confidence and public speaking skills through its global network of clubs. Transporters, other stakeholders commend Soludo's move to sanitise, regulate sector

Stakeholders in the transport sector have lauded governor Chukwuma Soludo's move to sanitise the industry and make it profitable and healthy for all.

The stakeholders, who included commercial drivers and operators of auto service centres, auto spare parts dealers, auto mechanic and technicians, motor vehicle and caterpillar dealers and Keke dealers among others, disclosed this at event organised by the State Ministry of Transportation to brief them on proposed licencing in the state.

They urged the state governor to quickly set machinery in motion to establish mechanic villages in the state, where mechanics site their workshops to render services to the citizens, while uniting them for easy administration, and creating avenue for state government to rake billions annually from internally generated revenue.

Some of them, including a car dealer, Mr Bosa Okenwa, an automobile electrician, Mr Izuchukwu Agbo, automobile mechanic, Mr Uchenna Aniebonam, and a panel beater, Mr Amobi Uzor, commended the state government for the move, assuring that they would give positive support to it.

Anambra state government has disclosed that plans were underway to establish a mechanic village as part of the urban renewal project in the state, which would among other things make lives easier for all.

The state Commissioner for Transport, Barrister Mrs Patricia Igwebuike, represented by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Chief Michael Obiekwe, said the establishment will help decongest the streets and residential areas.

"The establishment of mechanics village is in the pipeline and very soon will be established in the state. In the well organized mechanic village, spaces would be allotted to dealers based on their line of trade and services with a well spelt out demarcations," she added.

The commissioner urged the stakeholders to key into the new policy of obtaining licence from the government for their various workshops and businesses, stressing that it was geared towards regulating their operations for their benefit and the society.

A consultant at the event and Cordinator on Special Trade Licence, Anambra State Ministry of Transport, Prince Fidelis Nnadi, while hailing the move by the government, explained that every law is made for the good of the society.

According to Nnadi, the programme would also help to enhance the safety of lives and property of the citizenry living or working in the state.

Others who spoke at the event, including the Head of Transport Operations, Anambra State Ministry of Transport, Mr Christian Okeke, and Chief Vehicle Inspection Officer, Mr MacDonald Achuam, explained that the programme was aimed at enlightening participants about relevant laws that affect their operations, adding that the benefits include ensuring that businesses are known beyond immediate environment, as well as having government coverage.

Nnobi community in Idemili-South Local Government Area of Anambra State have unanimously endorsed the Ikemba Nnobi Special Chieftaincy title bestowed on High Chief Hamilton Emeka Ezeonu, a son of the soil whom they all attested has used his wealth and vast experience to transform Nnobi into another London.

Indigenes of the community also categorically declared that High Chief Emeka Hamilton Ezeonu is the authentic Ikemba Nnobi they know and that any other character parading himself or impersonating Hamilton Emeka Ezeonu as Ikemba Nnobi is doing so at his own peril because Emeka Hamilton Ezeonu, according to them, fulfilled all the necessary constitutional requirements for the Ikemba Nnobi Special Chieftaincy title to be conferred on him by His Royal Majesty Igwe Engr. Nick Obi.

Although they said a certain individual is claiming to have been conferred Ikemba Nnobi sometime in 1999 by the then traditional ruler His Royal Majesty Igwe Edmond Ezeokoli.They equally disclosed to this journalist that the Ikemba Nnobi title given to the persona was an honorary award which they said has no effect and of no consequence in accordance with Nnobi town constitution.

The indigenes who spoke exclusively with this journalist maintained that Nnobi Constitution provided for Honorary Awards and Special Chieftaincy Titles. They explained that honorary awards could be given to every Dick and Harry as well as every Tom and Jerry and that an honorary award holder can not be a member of the Igwe-In-Council let alone be a member of Ndi-Ichie or Ndi-Nze Na Ozo or even exchange the three handshake of Red cap chiefs. This is in accordance with Nnobi Town Constitution.

The people noted that Nnobi Special Chieftaincy Titles are given to individuals who have shown an uncommon generosity to humanity through philanthropy and selfless service. They said any Special Chieftaincy Title holder in Nnobi community automatically becomes a member of Ndi-Ichie, Ndi-Nze Na Ozo and the Igwe-In-Council because the individual must have fulfilled the constitutional obligations to Ebenesi, Ngo and Awuda, which are the three quarters of Nnobi community.

The people who described High Chief Hamilton Emeka Ezeonu as pure gold as well as a gift from God to Nnobi town, said he is also a man of impeccable character having deployed his wealth for the betterment and emancipation of the rural populace even as they also disclosed that the persona portraying himself as Ikemba Nnobi has never been addressed as such neither is he an Ozo title holder or a member of the Igwe's cabinet.

Hence, Hon. Francis Obinna Nwankwo who hails from Umuona village Ebenesi Nnobi told this journalist that he could not fathom the reason behind the sudden unwarranted contest over who is the real and authentic Ikemba Nnobi. He said High Chief Hamilton Emeka Ezeonu took a special title as Ikemba Nnobi and that ever since the entire community has been addressing him as Ikemba Nnobi. He said some persons surfaced recently only to create confusion and rancour in the community on the grounds that someone had already taken the title.

Nwankwo therefore recalled that sometime in 1999, late Igwe Edmond Ezeokoli gave honorary awards to some persons in the community. He said that the late monarch gave one Amb.

That for anyone to be in the class of special chieftaincy title holders, the individual must first be an Ozo title holder. Then fullfil the constitutional requirements to the three quarters of Nnobi namely Ebenesi, Ngo and Awuda respectively. Nwankwo further explained that any prospective special chieftaincy title holder also has obligations to the king makers, Nnobi Welfare Organization and the Igwe-In-Council.

But in the case of honorary awards, recognition or merit awards, Nwankwo noted that prospective recipients doesn't require the rigorous processes involved in the conferment of special chieftaincy titles. He said the candidate for honorary award doesn't need to be an Ozo title holder let alone be in the Igwe's cabinet. That as long as High Chief Hamilton Emeka Ezeonu is still alive, no one can contest Ikemba Nnobi special chieftaincy title with him because from available records he is the only Nnobi indigene with that special chieftaincy title as Ikemba Nnobi.

Meanwhile Nnobi palace secretary Chief Ezeobi Ajaghaku, who corroborated what F.O Nwankwo said, opined that High Chief Hamilton Emeka Ezeonu is the only authentic Ikemba Nnobi in Nnobi town. Chief Ezeobi said Hamilton Emeka Ezeonu fulfilled all the constitutional requirements as stipulated in sections 138, 139, 140 and 141 of Nnobi community constitution. According to him, any other person ascribing Ikemba Nnobi to himself is just messing up. The Nnobi palace secretary noted that he has all the necessary documents to back his claims that High Chief Hamilton Emeka Ezeonu is the authentic Ikemba Nnobi and that is final.

Contributing to the debate on who the authentic Ikemba Nnobi really is, Mr. Ifeanyi Okoye, who is a native of Ifite Ogbeadiji village Ebenesi Nnobi, said they have the honorary Ikemba Nnobi as well as the special title Ikemba Nnobi whom he said is a member of the Igwe's cabinet. He said the only person in the community with the Ikemba Nnobi special chieftaincy title is High Chief Hamilton Emeka Ezeonu, adding that the real Ikemba Nnobi is the one who is a member of the Igwe-In-Council.

Okoye maintained that as an Nnobi man, he has never heard anyone being addressed as Ikemba Nnobi except until the emergence of High Chief Hamilton Emeka Ezeonu. Although he recalled that prior to the conferment of Ikemba Nnobi special chieftaincy title on Hamilton Emeka Ezeonu, the argument was that it coincided with that of Seaman Petroleum whose chieftaincy title was Ike Idemili-North and South but has not taken Ike Nnobi traditional title. That in the end, High Chief Hamilton Emeka Ezeonu was coronated with the Ikemba Nnobi special chieftaincy title, adding that he was part and parcel of his coronation ceremony.

He however mentioned some of the community development projects that High Chief Hamilton Emeka Ezeonu has executed and still executing in Nnobi town to merit Ikemba Nnobi special chieftaincy title. Okoye said they include road construction, renovation and beautification of Nnobi general hospital, empowering Nnobi people in conjunction with the wife, renovated doctors' quarters, built borehole water facilities for Nnobi people, built police solar power at Divisional Police Station Nnobi, to mention just a few. He said some of his ongoing projects include building of security office at General Hospital Nnobi, stressing that High Chief Hamilton Emeka Ezeonu remains the only authentic Ikemba Nnobi the people of Nnobi know, respect and adore because his philanthropy and service to humanity are second to none; that rather than address him as Ikemba Nnobi alone, it would be very appropriate and most befitting to call him Ikemba Worldwide.

The Management of the College of Postgraduate Studies, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka has passed a vote of confidence on the leadership of the Provost, Prof Philomena Igbokwe.

This is contained in a statement from the college signed by Prof. E. O. C. Obidimma, Associate Provost (Humanities), for the College of Postgraduate Studies after an emergency meeting over some unfriendly and sponsored publications in the social media aimed at tarnishing the image of the College.

The College management and staff in the statement said the Provost, Prof Igbokwe remained distinguished in character, stickler of excellence, outstanding in leadership and could not be diminished by malicious attacks by faceless people online.


The College insists that there is no rot in any form in the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka Postgraduate College ,neither was there any staff of the college officially engaged in extortion in any form as the Ethics and Disciplinary committee of the university is at work 24 hours a day.

The College described the Provost, Prof Igbokwe and team as proactive and urged the reading public to disregard such reports online emanating from sadists, sore loosers and those who do not wish the College well and envious of the university's feats in the Postgraduate College.

The crop of staff in the College are exceptional, diligent and dedicated to the goal, vision and mission of the University rooted in Discipline, Self-Reliance and Excellence. The College is open to any form of investigation as regards the said accusations, as the integrity of our great University and the College in particular, has always been and would continue to be in high esteem.

The College informs further that Prof. Philomena Igbokwe, the Provost of the College is not just the Provost of Unizik College, but also the immediate past Chairman of the Committee of Provosts and Deans of Postgraduate Colleges and Schools of Nigerian Universities. Prof Igbokwe is one of the most respected professors of Nnamdi Azikiwe University,Awka and one of the frontline female professors of Chemical Engineering in Nigeria (the first female professor of Chemical Engineering in Nigeria). Those who know her know that she is a very disciplined person and an administrator to the core, hence since her assumption of the seat as the Provost of the College, she has always ensured timely graduation of students and would always do everything humanly possible to maintain discipline and sanity in the College.

The College, not leaving anything to Chances, has set up a high powered committee of people with proven integrity to investigate the allegations dispassionately for the College to know the truth of the allegations and take all necessary disciplinary actions fit in such circumstances.

Part of the statement read thus: The College hereby denies the contents of the said online publication in its entirety as it contains no iota of truth in any ramifications.
The publication under reference is malicious and only intended to malign and harm the reputation of the College of Postgraduate Studies and to bring the individuals mentioned therein into public opprobrium and ridicule. Of a truth, there is no “extortion and fraudulent crimes” being perpetrated in the College against the students and no student is made to pay the sum of N8,400.00 (Eight thousand four hundred Naira) or any amount whatsoever for the purpose of having their results sent to the College Board for approval or for any purpose whatsoever.

"There is also no threat to any student of not seeing his/her results on account of non-payment of the alleged amount demanded. These allegations are fallacious and are as baseless as they are unfounded. The College does not generate results. Results are computed/generated by departments where students have the opportunity of seeing their results if they wish to. This is not shrouded in secrecy. The College only collates results for presentation to the College Board for approval.

"On the issue of Postgraduate students spending many years in running Postgraduate Programmes, the College states that this issue cannot be located at the doorstep of the College except for the purpose of calling a dog a bad name in order to hang it as is being done by the writer of the article in question. This is so because Postgraduate Programmes are run by departments which control the management of the Programmes. The College only supervises and intervenes on occasions (as it has done) where it's attention has been drawn in matters of conflicts between students and supervisors/lecturers with the potential of prolonging the students’ programme. The College does not play any part in delaying students’ programmes.
The College reiterates that no form of extortion or fraudulent crime is being perpetrated in the College against the students whose interests the College serves and protects at all times. Let it be known also that Mrs. Njideka Nwangwu is not engaged in any high-level financial extortion as alleged at all, and that the Provost of the College, Prof. Philomena Igbokwe has no knowledge of any such alleged high-level financial extortion let alone being involved in such dastard and inhuman act. If the writer had employed due diligence and professionalism in his pursuit as he ought to, he would have verified the facts and arrived at a balanced view and the truth.

'The College is not unmindful of the defamatory nature of the publication under reference and the potential damage it could cause as it is understood that the sole purpose of the said publication is to tarnish the image of the College and that of the individuals whose names and photographs were published therein. The College is taking steps to remedy this wrong, and the individuals mentioned in the publication are also taking steps to initiate the appropriate legal actions to remedy the incalculable damage and the emotional distress caused by this unwarranted publication.

The Peace and Positive Living Awareness Centre (PEPOLAC), a nongovernmental organisation promoting the United Nations (UN) sustainable development goals, has enjoined the world leaders to prioritise peace in their respective countries.

The Convener, PEPOLAC, Bishop Dr Ozioma Ozoemena, who made the call at 2024 peace advocates annual convention cum ground breaking ceremony of "Peace and Leadership Centre Multipurpose Building Project," held at Awka, the Anambra State capital, argued that there was need for global peace amidst the economic downturn, crisis and other challenges confronting humanity so as to records progress.

According to Ozoemena, peaceful resolution of conflicts at homes, communities, national and subnational or regional levels would help to achieving sustainable development across all sectors by both individuals and government.

He explained that the group leverages on the UN SDG agenda to promote peaceful coexistence and attitudinal change among the populace, while mobilising volunteers and peace advocates in order to entrench inclusive justice, development and sustainable living all over the globe.

To him, in order to actualise peace, promote human rights, cooperation and respect among people from different cultural background, ethnicity and nationalities, PEPOLAC equally trains and empower the populace with relevant skills, as well as educate people on social ailments, gender equality, promotion of tourism, protection of environment and the planet for inclusive peace and justice.

The Vice Chancellor, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COO), Professor Kate Omenugha, who delivered a lecture at the occasion, urged the public to inculcate habits of forgiving offences, eschew pride, neglect and ethnocentric behaviours towards other people for whatever reasons.

Omenugha, who posited that peace was needed to address the problems of insecurity, injustice, insurgence, kidnapping, among other crisis bedeveiling Nigeria and rest of the world, advocated for peace inclusive education.

Also speaking, the Speaker, Anambra State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Somtochukwu Udeze, represented by Deputy Majority Leader of the House, Dr Jude Akpua, disclosed that the legislative chamber valued the place of peace in human relations and societal growth which was why they had passed relevant laws in that regards and admonished families to be peacemakers by living peacefully with their neighbours and striving to resolve their differences amicably.

Contributing, the Traditional Ruler of Umueri in Anambra East Local Government Area (LGA), Igwe Bennett Emeka and his counterpart from Ifitedunu, Dunukofia LGA, Igwe Chukwuemeka Ilouno, argued that no amount of development could be achieved at homes, States or country where there is absence of peace.

Other speakers, including recipients of the United Nations ambassador award for peace (UN-PEPOLAC) at the programme, Comrade Innocent Mba, from Enugu State, Dr Okey Obi from Nnewi, and a Liberian, Bill Malema Wonta, vowed to continue being advocates of peace for a better society.

On the Peace and Leadership Centre Multipurpose Building Project, Bishop Ozoemena explained that the project would among other things, provide enabling environment for peaceful coexistence among people, be a pacesetter in peace advocacy, institutionalize ideals and rudiments for global peace.

The building, it was learnt, would feature Multipurpose conference hall, ADR room, Executive meetings/Seminars hall, International College of Peace Advocates offices, peace education/tourism offices, executive offices, among others.

A Concerned student and social media user, Mr Ademola Josh, has dismissed the claims on social media that Benin Electrical Distribution Company (BEDC) was planning to discontent the University of Benin (UNIBEN) from the national grid.

Ademola, in a statement, assured the university community that there was hope that the power would not be disconnected even though he suspected that the university management might be the one owing the power distribution company.

He wrote "This is to address the misleading information circulating on WhatsApp groups within our University (UNIBEN) Community, Tagged - THREAT BY BEDC TO DISCONNECT THE UNIVERSITY.

"After reading the content supposedly signed by our University Management, it became imperative to clarify some issues.

"The claim that the April 2024 electricity bill being outrageous is actually mis-leading, as the bill was based on actual meter readings, as cosumed by UNIBEN.

"The significant increase in the billed amount from previous months is due to a government-mandated tariff increase for Band A customers, which applies to all DISCOs, including BEDC.

"The increase was from N68/KWh to N225/KWh but later slashed to 206/KWh ( see link for details https:///tariffincrease )

"Therefore, the purported threat of the withdrawal of supply by BEDC is likely as a result of the University Management refusal to make payment for energy consumed in April 2024.

The Managing Director of Awka Capital Territory Development Authority (ACTDA) and Convener of Soludo Ambassadors Mr. Ossy Onuko has advocated for education and healthy living among children particularly those in Anambra State.

This was made know in a press released to commemorate the 2024 Children 's day celebration in the State.

Mr. Onuko in his message highlighted the efforts of Anambra State Governor, Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo, in providing a conducive learning environment that have enhanced, depend, and expanded the frontiers of knowledge. He noted that Governor Soludo has prioritized training teachers in modern teaching techniques, which was why Anambra was leading in various competition.

Hon. Onuko urged youths in the state and beyond to shun anti-social behaviors such as drug abuse, cultism, and examination malpractice. He emphasized the importance of focusing on their studies, which he said brings hope for their future and the future of the state and country at large.


He further appealed to parents to continue their efforts in sending their wards to school, especially girls stressing that educating girls reduces infant and maternal mortality and discourages early child marriages.

The ACTDA boss commended the Wife of the Governor Mrs. Nonye Soludo, for introducing healthy living initiatives in the state and bringing them to the grassroots, especially in schools while urging parents, guardians, and children to embrace the healthy living campaign championed by Mrs. Soludo, adding that it was the best option to ensure health and longevity.

Mr. Onuko however called on parents and guardians to adequately care for their children, recognizing them as future leaders.

Stakeholders from 19 electoral wards in Anaocha Local Government Area (LGA), Anambra State have vowed to mobilise funds and voters for reelection of governor Chukwuma Soludo in 2025.

They argued that reelection of Soludo was sacrosanct for the State to continue enjoying sustainable development, peace and tranquility characterised by the governor's numerous achievements across all sectors of the economy within two years in office.

The stakeholders disclosed this at maiden edition of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) summit 2024 held at Golden Tulip Hotel Agulu under the theme governance and the people duty of the political party at the grassroots.

The event which also featured award presentations and re-addmission of decampees, was attended by notable political actors at the national and state governments level, past and present APGA officials, and top government functionaries, including some captain of industry, youth and women of worth within the Council Area.

Speaking at the occasion, the APGA LG Chairman, Chief Sir Anthony Ugorji (Ọzọ Ebubechukwu na Nri), recalled that the governor has impacted lives positively through the one youth 2 skills programme, agricultural revolution via improved palm and coconut plantations, employments of thousands of teachers and health practitioners, free maternal delivery, sports development, among others.

According to him, the stakeholders meeting was aimed at brainstorming on how best the party would restrategise to mobilise members and votes for APGA within Anaocha and six other Council Areas in Anambra Central Senatorial district and beyond.

"We will continue to engage with all the key stakeholders, youth and women from all the 19 wards in Anaocha LGA to renew their commitments to this project. I will continue to promote solution messages across the wards. APGA is Anaocha. Anaocha is APGA. We will not allow APGA to die. Soludo has delivered and continues to deliver on his campaign promises. Anaocha people will vote massively for him," he stated.

Ugorji, who also empowered 19 women from 19 electoral wards with funds to boost their businesses, thanked the stakeholders for their support, assuring that he would never disappoint Anaocha people throughout his tenure as party chairman.

Also speaking, High Chief Ben Obi (Igwe APGA), who was among those bestowed with pillars of APGA award, reassured his support for the party to remain victorious at all elections even as he enjoined other stakeholders to key into the project as APGA spirit of onyeagha na nwanne ya (be your brothers/sisters keepers) would always propel them to succeed.

On his part, the former member representing Anaocha/Dunukofia/Njikoka federal constituency and Senatorial candidate of APGA in 2023 poll, Rt. Hon. Dozie Nwankwo, described APGA as a force to reckon with, noting that the victory of Soludo in 2025 has been assured if they continue to work as one family.

Nwankwo, who was also an award recipient, charged the stakeholders to embark on grassroots campaign from house to house and get ready to vote and defend their votes as always.

Deaf women in Anambra State, Friday, lamented over inability to access healthcare services from both public and private health institutions in the State.

They also alleged that their members had lost pregnancies as well as experienced other health complications while being discriminated and stigmatised by health care providers and other members of the society.

This was contained in a research report conducted by Deaf Women Aloud Initiative (DWAI), a Nongovernmental organisation presented at Awka, the Anambra State capital during the launch and dissemination of research findings on inclusive sexual and reproductive health services for deaf women in Anambra State.

The Project Officer, DWAI, Ms Patience Etim, who said the study identified pathways to equitable health information and services for deaf women, explained that inclusive data collection approach was used for the study which made it possible for deaf women, girls and health providers to speak.

According to Etim, a total of 352 deaf women and girls participated in the survey across the 21 Local Government Areas of Anambra State, even as a focus group discussion was equally held with participants drawn from healthcare backgrounds and deaf community.

She added that "Deaf women and girls in Anambra State face a multitude of barriers when accessing health services, challenges that are rooted in systemic, cultural and logistics issues. The needs assessment revealed communication barriers, lack of awareness and training among healthcare providers, and experiences of stigmatisation and discrimination.

"Each of these challenges contributed to a healthcare environment that is not only inaccessible but often unwelcome to deaf individuals. We call on government to employ sign language interpreters in health facilities and to fully implement disability rights act, and the sexual and reproductive health policies for effective and inclusive health care service delivery."

In a remark, the Executive Director, Deaf Women Aloud Initiative (DWAI), Hellen Beyioku-Alase, urged governor Chukwuma Soludo's urgent intervention to include the needs of people with disabilities in the health sector, especially by ensuring that hospitals keep data of people with disabilities accessing their facilities and provision of information for deaf women through video format and sign language.

"The findings reveal significant Communication barriers, lack of accessible health information and numerous challenges in accessing quality health care. However, they also point to clear pathways for improvement. By implementing the recommendations in this report, we can enhance interpreter availability, provide targeted training for healthcare providers.

"And develop inclusive policies that prioritise the health and wellbeing of deaf women and girls. It is a call for healthcare providers, policymakers, community leaders and all stakeholders to come together in solidarity and commitment. Together, we can build a health system that is truly inclusive where every woman and girl, regardless of their hearing ability, has access to the care and support they need," she stated.

Contributing, the State Chairman, Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD), Comrade Ugochukwu Okeke argued that keeping proper data of people with disabilities access to health facilities would help policy makers and others to advocate for enhanced and inclusive healthcare delivery to all in Anambra State.

The representatives of Anambra State Ministry of Women Affairs, Princess Bibiana Nwankwo and her counterparts from the Ministry of Health, Dr Uju Okoye promised to take the messages to their respective institutions so as to inspire government actions towards provision of their demands.

Earlier, the Chairman, Anambra State Disability Rights Commission, Barrister Chukwuka Ezewuzie commended the Nongovernmental organisation for chosen Anambra State for the programme which he argued would be a beacon guiding all towards a more inclusive future and transformation of healthcare system.

All is now set for petroleum products marketers in Anambra State to shutdown operations indefinitely following the expiration of one month ultimatum issued to the State in solidarity with their members owed over N900 million for supplying streetlight generator diesel.

The marketers under the aegis of Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) had met on April 24 and decided that they would embark on a total shutdown of operations without further notice if their demands were not met by the Anambra government.

Other demands of IPMAN included withdrawal of all litigations against members based on multiple taxation as well as the demolition of part of the property of Chris Tee Nigeria limited, a marketer at Trans-Nkissi phase 1 along Onitsha-Otuocha road.

The strike was shelved on the intervention of Mr Ken Maduako, a patron of the association; and Golden Iloh, a member of the Anambra State House of Assembly

IPMAN had pleaded with Soludo to pay the debt amounting to N900,664,805.00 for diesel supplied for the months of March and April 2022 to no avail.

“Our members are dying because of these debts, and the banks are chasing them around to repay the loans given to them to do this business,” it said.

A marketer who pleaded anonymity said they the challenges had not been addressed by the state government as nobody had been paid.

The source said they were waiting for directive by the leadership of Enugu Depot IPMAN for further instructions on the Industrial action.

Stakeholders who participated at 2 days concord initiative Southeast zonal technical workshop on sustainable peace, inclusive recovery and durable security have identified loss of some core Igbo values as remote causes of insecurity in the region.

The participants drawn from the five States in the South East geopolitical zone, included Traditional Rulers, community leaders, leadership of religious institutions, law enforcement agents, heads of government and nongovernmental organisations, political leaders and educationists.

They further enjoined the governors and lawmakers from Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo States to thinker policies and legislations geared towards reviving some of the dying Igbo cultural values especially those involving Igbo apprenticeship modal and skills acquisition, sacredness of marriages, community parenting, respect to elders and environments.

According to them, when homes and communities are bonded in peace, there is bound to be inclusive results for durable peace and sustainable development across the South East states and beyond.

Speaking at the event held at Awka, the Anambra State capital, the Traditional Ruler of Okpuno, Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State, Igwe Sunday Okafor, argued that crimes would be reduced to a barest minimum if not totally eradicated when the Igbo nation upholds their core values, even as he charged the younger generations to jettison get-rich-quick syndrome.

On his part, the Executive Director, West African Network for Peacebuilding (WANEP), Dr Chukwuemeka Eze, urged the government to be proactive in tackling insecurity, engage with stakeholders in dialogue, while improving business investments, build the capacity and manpower of the security agents.

Contributing, the National President, Anambra State Association of Town Unions (ASATU), Chief Titus Akpudo and Mr Okechukwu Nwaguma of Rule of Law and Accountability Centre (RULAAC), averred that insecurity could be addressed through a collaborative efforts with all stakeholders, sustained dialogue and reorientation.

Also speaking, the Anambra State Commandant of National Drug Law Enforcement Agents (NDLEA), Mr Daniel Onyishi urged increased awareness on dangers of drugs and substance abuse, while Bishop Ikenna Afoenyi of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) and Mrs Victoria Ibezim-Ohaeri of Spaces for Change called for jobs creations, youths and women empowerment as tools to nip insecurity to the bud.

On their parts, the Deputy National President, Ohanaeze Ndigbo worldwide, Chief Afam Okeke-Ogene and the representative of National Hunan Rights Commission, Mrs Uche Nwokocha, stressed the needs for the government at all levels to stop supporting electoral malpractices, promote good governance and treat all citizens equally at all times.

In a Goodwill message, the Chairman, Anambra State Truth, Justice and Peace Commission, Professor Chidi Odinkalu, who spoke virtually underscored the importance of peace in nation building and development, while governor Chukwuma Soludo represented by his Deputy, Dr. Onyekachukwu Ibezim argued that the State government was not relenting in nipping insecurity to the bud.

Earlier, the Director General, Office for Strategic Preparedness & Resilience (National Early Warning Centre of Nigeria), Mr Chris Ngwodo explained that the retreat brought together key leadership actors from the region to deliberate on interventions designed to promote sustainable peace, inclusive recovery and durable security.

"The Concord initiative is an indicator of multidimensional peacebuilding measures, and the South East workshop will serve as an inception dialogue for consensus building among key stakeholders stemming from which critical programmatic interventions will be deployed in the zone.

" By emphasizing dialogue, justice delivery, collaboration, economic empowerment and community engagement, this initiative seeks to address local resentments, agitation and youth restiveness, thereby fostering a conducive environment for growth and prosperity," he further maintained.

The founder and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Centre for Herbal Medicine and Centre for Psychic and Healing Administration (CPHA), Awka, Anambra State, Chief Dr Mrs Flora Ifeanyichukwu Nkemakonam Ilonzo has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and governors of 36 States of the federation to invest into herbal tea cultivation and production.

Ilonzo gave the charge in her message on May 21st, 2024 world tea day, a day set aside by the United Nations at her December 21, 2019 resolution aimed at creating awareness and fostering collective actions towards sustainable production and consumption of tea with a view to fighting hunger and poverty.

She averred that investing into local or herbal tea productions across the country would help the country to diversify her economy, as well as create jobs while improving the health and wellbeing of the populace.

According to her, this could be achieved by mapping out lands across local government areas and communities for cultivation of different species of African medicinal plants otherwise referred to as herbal gardens, including where they could easily be processed and transform to herbal teas before distribution, exportation or consumption.

The herbal expert whose teachings, researches and remedies provided with regards to phytomedicine had been authenticated and praised by various International recognised health institutions like the World Health Organisation (WHO), also urged the citizenry to cultivate and harness herbal teas at their homes, assuring that she will assist the country to navigate through this.

The philanthropist who is renowned for using herbs in resolving frictions between man and nature within and outside Nigeria, further argued that drinking herbal teas could help in preventing or recovering from chronic diseases because plants have different signatures showcasing health remedies they could provide if well utilised.

The member representing Ogbaru Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Afam Victor Ogene, has described the decision by Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra state, to snub the calls for elections and singlehandedly appoint another set of Local Government Transition Committee members, as ridiculous, undemocratic, abuse of power and unfair to the development dreams of the people.

This was contained in a statement the federal lawmaker made in Awka, on Sunday, May 19, 2024, in response to the correspondence between the office of the governor and the local government chairmen of the Governor's party, the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), calling for submission of CVs by interested persons within the party, through the office of the party's LGA chairmen, for appointment into the Transition Committee.

According to Ogene, who is the Labour Party's House of Reps' Caucus Leader, "Records show that Governor Soludo changes LGA Transition Committee members every three months, and have therefore, made these curious changes seven times since assumption of office in 2022. By the time he makes another of such change this month, that would be the 8th time within two years in office.

"That to me, would be an inglorious record by a democratically elected governor. This puppeteering style of leadership, which toys with the destiny, aspiration and desires of the grassroots, must be resisted and not allowed to continue to shrink the development potential of the LGAs.

"The local government ought to be the most important tier of government, as envisaged by the Nigerian Constitution, because it's not only the tier that is closest to the people, it is also the obvious foundation of both the subnational and the federal government. And should not be at the whims of state governors."

"Such undemocratic practice of appointing LGA administrators, rather that democratic election, is an enabler of impunity and lack of democratic accountability and also hurts transparency in the local governments and the state as a whole, as those so appointed would only scramble for personal interests during the three months of their stay in office. This does not help the management of scarce resources or the development of the LGAs."

Speaking further, Hon. Ogene queried: "For instance, what manner of meaningful development plan would a TC chairman articulate and execute within a period of three months? Isn't it troubling that Governor Soludo, a prominent economist, is promoting this charade contrary to all the economic indices that point to the decreasing economic and social fortunes of the people in the grassroots as a result of the shrinking presence of government development activities in the rural areas?

"What really is Governor Soludo afraid of in conducting elections in the LGAs, in line with his campaign promises and the desires of the people in the grassroots and provisions of the Constitution? It should be noted that other states, such as Delta, Lagos, Edo, Rivers, Kaduna, Awka Ibom, etc hold elections in the third tier of government, no matter how imperfect; why then is Governor Soludo appointing and discarding LGA administrators as if they are used tissue papers?

Meanwhile, the Senate on Thursday, May 16, 2024, also accused state governors of misappropriating funds allocated to local government councils in Nigeria, saying that arm of government was dead in the country, as a result of the overwhelming powers of the state governors over the LGAs.

It also said the dream of achieving the objectives of the local government system has encountered harsh realities as successive governments have often eroded local autonomy, limiting their financial resources and control over decision-making.


The Senate, consequently, asked the federal government to stop further allocation of funds to caretaker committee-led local government areas, LGAs, and urged President Bola Tinubu to, as a matter of urgency, champion the cause of full autonomy for local governments in the country.

The resolutions of the Senate were sequel to a motion sponsored by Senator Suleiman Kawu, NNPP, Kano South.

The Senate resolved that President Tinubu should champion the cause of full autonomy for local governments in the country.

Emeka Obidimma, Director of Sports Technical in the Anambra Sports Development Commission has described the ongoing school sports festival as impressive and promising.

Obidimma said this on Wednesday in Awka at the conclusion of the intercommunity stage of the festival.

The festival which will hold between May 2 and June 7
was featuring 12 sporting events. Athletics, Basketball, Chess, Football, Scrabble and Swimming.

Others were Table tennis, Tennis, Taekwondo, Volleybal, Cricket and Ncho and would be competed for in U-12, U-14 and U-18 categories.

The Local Government Area stage of the competition would hold between May 15 and May 17.

Obidimma said the festival had once again brought alive the spirit of grassroots sports as about 756 primary and secondary schools across the 179 communities took part in the first stage of the competition.

“I am glad to inform you that the second edition of the Anambra School Sports Festival which started on May 2 is progressing well, it has been participatory because a good number of schools registered to participate and the young athletes have been showing promise.

“Already, we have started identifying potential champions because the major purpose of school sports under the Anambra State Sports Solution Initiative (ANSSI) is to discover future Olympians.


“We are grateful to Gov. Chukwuma Soludo who has shown tremendous interest in sports and empowering youths through it, that is part of the reason why he brought the school sports festival back in 2023 as well as Patrick-Estate Onyedum, Chairman of Anambra State Sports Development Commission for driving the vision,” he said.

Obidimma said the competition was a huge improvement over the 2023 edition while admitting that there were challenges at the initial stage.

He said the real champions woul begin to emerge as the festival progresses and called on sports enthusiasts to visit the venues and cheer the oils and students to victory.

The Apex Igbo socio-cultural group, Ohaneze Ndigbo has demanded an immediate apology to the Ukachukwu brothers and their subsequent compensation by the Federal Government, over what it called, the unprovoked illegal demolition of the Real Estate Investment at Asokoro extension on the orders of the Minister of FCT, Barr Nyesom Wike.
Recall that officials of the Federal Capital Development Agency, acting on the orders of the FCT Minister, had on the 27th March 2024, invaded the project site with a detachment of over 300 security personnel including the Army, the Navy, the Police, and many others, and destroyed the properties.
The said property has the registration number: FCDA/DC/BP/ASD/29163 validly approved by the FCT authorities for development.
Addressing newsmen in Abuja, the President General Ohaneze Ndigbo Worldwide, Chief Engr Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu said there is no way anyone can talk about the development of Abuja without giving due credence to Igbo entrepreneurs, especially young men like Nicholas Ukachukwu, who worked so hard to develop the place.
According to him, Ukachukwu would not have invested such billions in Abuja, if he did not believe in one Nigeria.
“When Abuja was probably one or two streets, Ukachukwu came in here and invested heavily in developing Abuja. By the time these Igbos came to Abuja, many Nigerians from other tribes did not want to invest in developing Abuja.
“So when I invited him and he complained, I was actually moved with compassion because I know that this is a person who sincerely is a patriotic Nigeria and believes in the unity of the country.
“So he is one of those Igbos that Nigeria should be proud of and that is why this demolition is worrying me,” Iwuanyanwu noted.
The Ohaneze Ndigbo leader who described Ukachukwu as an honest and straightforward businessman, said he believes that he was being unjustly victimized and the Ohaneze Ndigbo will ensure that such is not allowed.
He said; “I want to assure you that as the Igbo leader, I will do my best to make sure that the Ukachukwu brothers are not in any way victimized any further and that they receive the due restoration of their properties which they lawfully acquired.”
Meanwhile, the Ohaneze Ndigbo youth wing has called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene on the matter as a panacea for peace, equity and justice.
The acting National leader of the Ohaneze Youth Wing, Mazi Chukwuma Okpalaezeukwu who made the call in a press briefing on the matter, said they have seen all the documents of acquisition, court judgments, orders, and evidence of Ministerial approvals for restoration of titles on the said properties.
He maintained that it is quite disheartening that this unlawful act was executed without recourse to the rule of law or any valid court judgment.
“Interestingly, this land was validly acquired in the nineties and has a clear history of legitimacy.
“Contrary to the claims of FCT Authorities, that the land was allocated in error to Praco international limited and the Ukachukwu's, FCT Authorities must be reminded that Nigeria is governed by law and as such should desist from anything that is inimical to the peace, unity, and progress of this country.
“We are miffed by the sheer audacity of FCTA to unleash mayhem on fellow Nigerians even without any serious provocation.
“ FCT Authorities must be cautioned, he said.
The Ohaneze youth leader demanded an immediate and unreserved apology from the FCDA to the Ukachukwu brothers, for labeling them land grabbers
“Government is a continuum; other past FCT Ministers were not ignorant of the law governing FCT land Administration; therefore it is instructive to note that Ukachukwu Brothers are law-abiding citizens, with National Honours, who acquired their wealth through dint of hard work and unwavering commitment for excellence, and have contributed immensely to Peace, Development and Overall wellbeing of the Federal Capital Territory.
“We therefore demand that adequate monetary compensation should be paid to the Ukachukwu brothers for the malicious and unwarranted demolition of their properties.
“We also call on the FCDA and the FCT Ministry, to desist from further unlawful encroachment of the said property forthwith.
“If the intervention of the Ohaneze Ndigbo National leader is not recognized, we shall be left with no choice than to seek redress through struggle,” Okpalaezeukwu insisted.

Youth Employment: NYCN Tasks Wealthy Citizens to Emulate Anambra Industrialist, Dr Chukwudozie

The Anambra State Chapter of the National Youth Council of Nigeria, NYCN, says investments that will create massive employment for the teeming unemployed youths in Anambra, are much needed at this time to begin to address the increasing rate of youths’ involvement in crime.

The Anambra State NYCN Chairman, Ambassador Surveyor Obi Emeka Chukwudi made this known in a chat with newsmen in Awka, after receiving news of the employment of members of the council by an Anambra philanthropist and industrialist, Dr Sir Daniel Chukwudozie, OON, FNSE, Akudo Ndigbo.
It was gathered that Chief Chukwudozie, who is the Executive Chairman, Dozzy Group of Companies, had selected some youths from the Council and given them employment in his companies.
Reacting to the development, Surveyor Chukwudi said what Chief Chukwudozie had done by gainfully engaging the youths, was to depopulate the number of persons who would have been lured into crime as a result of unemployment.
He also said the employed youths would also go on to become bread-winners in their families, supporting them out of poverty.
Emphasizing that the government alone cannot effectively tackle the rising unemployment in the country, Obi said it is heartwarming that the Dozzy Group is supporting the government in that regard.
“This is what can be best described as the true spirit of nationalism. Chief Chukwudozie’s identification and employment of these youths from the Council shows that he understands what is happening in society and is taking steps to become part of the solution instead of the problem.
“The beneficiaries are glad, as it provides them the opportunity to acquire business tips, and job experience and also meet up their financial responsibilities and obligations.
“Today, those employed youths can no more consider negative ventures as a means of survival because they have been positively engaged.
“All they would be focused on is how to deliver on their tasks and earn a living. That is a non-kinetic way of crime-fighting,” Obi said.
The Anambra NYCN boss called on other wealthy Anambra sons and daughters, to think in the direction which Chief Chukwudozie had thought, and evolve ways to positively engage the youths.
He said; “The youths, because of their age and exuberance, are the most susceptible to crime and violence, especially when they are idle.
“We are looking forward to seeing more wealthy Anambra people- industrialists, philanthropists, and otherwise, begin to give back to the society, in terms of empowering the youths.
“It is not enough to amass huge wealth. The ultimate question is- what did you deploy such wealth for.”
Obi revealed that the State NYCN is ready to partner anyone, who has genuine intentions of gainfully engaging our youths, with its network across the state.
“With our network across the various local government areas of the state, we can within the shortest possible time, come up with whatever number anyone wants to engage and in the right areas.
“Because we are everywhere, we have a comprehensive database of our youths, their areas of specification, both educated and skilled ones.
“So, the question of lack of structure does not suffice again, because my administration has mobilized the data on the youths, their academic qualifications and their skills.
“That way, it is easier to know who has capacity in whatever area, for whoever is seeking,” Obi posited.

Awka, May 3, 2024 Petty traders at the ongoing synod of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) Diocese of Awka Synod on Friday expressed joy over the bumper businesses they are making in the course of the event.

The correspondent covering the four-day church high profile diocesan meeting reports that it is taking place at Church of the Church of Pentecost, Awka.

On display are different items ranging from wears to edibles and books, including Bibles and telecommunication materials.

A respondent, Mrs Comfort Udembaeze, who is the diocesan marketing coordinator, said that since the synod started, sales have been impressive.

Udembaeze who deals on confectionery, soft drinks, and local delicacies, told NAN that she had value for her time and money in the programme.

“The morning rain on Friday was showers of blessings as there was no disruption of sales despite the rain fall,” she said.

Mrs Chidinmma Nwachukwuma, a sales representative for Airtel, a mobile telephone service provider, , said that sales were picking up but expressed hope for more patronage in the days ahead.

Nwachukwuma said that the network had a wider reach with steady internet services and optimistic of greater sales at the synod.

She said that Airtel Internet 4G pocket WiFi sold for N10,000, while the Smartbox went for N18,000 with unlimited data.

He made the charged in Awka on Thursday during a sermon titled "You must win" for the arrival service for 2nd session of the 13th synod of the church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, province of the Niger, Diocese of Awka.

Foreman advised Christians to guard themselves with basic principles of life that would guide them to shun sinful lives.

He enumerated the basic principles of right living to include discipline,determination,dedication,patience and sacrifice.

" if Christians strive to live in line with these biblically injuctions they certainly will be far from weight of sin that may rob them eternity.

" if you desire eternity with God you must not take what does not belong to you or what you are not licensed to take.

" A true Christian must not falsify his work age, is not right for Christians to work with certificate earned by another.

" Christians need to run away from movies not edifying,alcoholism or addiction leading to poor behaviour," he said.

Foreman advised Christians to be dedicated in things of God and develope self control good enough to fight sin when it comes their way.

He urged faithful not to lay back in things of God as people who lay back always lay waste.

" There is a price to win when you run the Christians race with fear of God, your generation will be blessed even years when you are gone to meet your marker," he said.

Major Stakeholders in Awka South Local Government Area, on May 1, 2024 visited the Solution Fun City, the new Secretariat and Governors Lodge in the state to assess the progress of ongoing projects.

The Solution Fun City which housed country club, family fun building, board games, cinema, event square, water Park , amusement park, among others, would give direct employment to 5000 youths and over 10000 indirect jobs to the residents of Awka metropolis when completed. It will also generate revenue for the state and log in Anambra to the global one stop shop amusement community

Speaking with newsmen at the site in Awka, an elder statesman and Awka indigene, Senator Ben Ndi Obi said he was amazed with the level of projects embarked by Governor Soludo to give Anambra a befitting State Capital inline with his promise of making Awka the Dubai of Africa.

According to him, "The governor is turning the state around with infrastructural developments and the impact of his governance is felt by the masses", he said.

Sen. Obi who nicknamed Governor Soludo "infrastructural master" praised him for doing more with less as his efforts would be appreciated in giving him maximum support for second tenure.

Sen Obi who recounts his ordeal with past Governors on his position in giving Anambra a befitting State Capital, maintained that at the end of Soludo's four years in office, the capital city will be the best built city in the eastern state.

In his remarks, the Commissioner for Housing, Hon. Pauly Onyeka who appreciated Awka stakeholders for their time spent in inspect the ongoing project, assured of the speedy completion of the project.

Speaking on the construction of the new government house, Hon. Onyeka said the building was one of the essential projects that the Governor was putting up for Ndi Anambra,noted that people have never had it this good before.

The commissioner who disclosed that disclosed that over 32 years of creation of the state, none of the Governors could complete the project describes Governor Soludo as a jinx breaker.

He further noted that over 3,000 economic tress will be planted to support the green revolution of the state. He praised the governor for his efforts in bringing the project to effectual completion while working simultaneously in other places.

The Managing Director of Awka Capital Territory Development Authority (ACTDA) Mr. Ossy Onuko who was elated with what the governor was doing in the state said the visit to the project sites was necessary for the people to see what the governor was doing. The reporter learnt that the Solution Fun City which was flagged off in October 2023 and was handled by GSS construction company , ZCC construction company among others is expected to be completed within 8 months.

The stakeholders, who included civil society organisations, community leaders, women and youth leaders, observed that majority have neither electronic nor printed copies of the new electoral acts as well as lacked adequate knowledge of its key provisions capable of engineering good governance.

They spoke at one day citizens town hall meeting on electoral reform held at Awka, the State capital by the Peering Advocacy and Advancement Centre in Africa (PAACA) in collaboration with MacArthur Foundation, Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre (PLAC) and Women's Right Advancement and Protection Alternative (WRAPA).

Speaking at the programme, the Executive Director, PAACA, Mr Ezenwa Nwagwu, explained that political education was necessary to expose people to their various rights and obligations, while collating ideas and contributions from relevant stakeholders for improved electoral processes.

Nwagwu, who disclosed that various stakeholders have roles to play in strengthening the Nigeria electoral system, enjoined the citizens to acquire the electronic or printed copies of the electoral act and study to become aware of their key provisions and implementation strategies.

Contributing, the Anambra State Director, National Orientation Agency, NOA, Mr Edozie Ajaegbu, argued that poor political culture, absence of internal party democracy, and electoral corruption have continued to undermine the ability of the electoral process to produce candidates who can effectively represent the aspirations and yearnings of Nigerians.

Other speakers, including the representatives of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief Samuel Nweke, Civil Society members, Dr Dennis Ekemezie and Dr Ego Uzoezie, hailed the organisers of the programme, while noting that increased voters education even when there were no elections would go along way in reducing voters apathy, vote buying and other offences.

Earlier, the Programme Manager, PAACA, Isaiah Amonye and Cordinator of PAACA in Anambra, Mrs Eucharia Anekwe, explained that the town hall meeting would enhanced public understanding and awareness regarding electoral reforms, as well as present citizen driven recommendations to the National Assembly and Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for consideration.

Peer Group Influence: Motivation for joining cults may come from peer group influence. Some students have become cultists because their friends lured them into joining.

Support from highly placed individuals in the society: In some institutions, officials play the role of grand patron to some cult groups and also sponsor them. The student cultists are used against several members of the community for selfish reasons.

Inadequate Religious and Moral Education: Some parents have abandoned their responsibilities in the area of moral upbringing of their children because of the craze for material wealth. They hardly show interest in the educational/academic progress of their children. Such parents do not attend parents’ fora and meetings.

The Youth Wing of Ohaneze Ndigbo on Wednesday gave the Nigeria Police Force and other sister security agencies a seven-day ultimatum to fish out the perpetrators of the massacre of people of Nimbo in Uzo Uwani Local Government Area of Enugu State.
Recall that Fulani Herdsmen had allegedly attacked the community on Sunday evening killing many people and leaving others injured.
Speaking after an emergency National Executive Committee Meeting of the Ohaneze Ndigbo Youth Wing, the National leader of the group, Mazi Chukwuma Okpalaezeukwu said the Igbo youths have condemned the act by the Fulani herdsmen.
“We condemn in strong terms the massacre of our people in Nimbo, Uzo Uwani LGA by Fulani Herdsmen and their criminal gang of marauding compatriots.
“It is no longer news that these Fulani terrorists and their enablers have continued this ethnic cleansing, in the guise of Farmers/Herders crisis.
“Hundreds have lost their lives, with thousands displaced from their homes; and till this day, not one individual has been arrested, indicted, or brought to justice.
“Government at all levels have failed to take responsibility, neither did they address the issue nor provide adequate succor to the victims. This is INJUSTICE.
“ It is imperative to remind Nigerians that it was this same senseless Killings and neglect of government responsibilities that brought the unfortunate Civil war that cost us fortunes.
“On this note, we the Igbo Youths hereby give the Nigeria Police Force and her Sister Agencies a seven-day ultimatum to fish out the perpetrators or leave us with no choice but to take our destiny in our own hands.
“Self Defense is a Fundamental Human Right, and we shall leave no stone unturned in ensuring we are not victimized nor undermined by anybody. Enough is Enough,” he said.
The Ohaneze youths regretted that insecurity as it is today in Nigeria is a national issue and must be attended to with utmost consciousness and caution to maximize impact.
He said, “Sequel to this, we urge the Federal Government to review her tactics and consider the application of Non-kinetic and political solutions in addressing the National Security impasse; especially on the need for the unconditional release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, who has been undergoing endless trials for treasonous offense in defiance to the order of a court of competent jurisdiction which directed his unconditional release.
“We use this opportunity to demonstrate our gratitude to all men of good conscience and other Nigerians who work day and night for the restoration of peace and stability in Alaigbo and Nigeria at large.”
The youths expressed worry over what they described as the erroneous assumption and impression made to pitch Ndigbo against the performing FCT Minister- Chief Barr. Nyesom Wike.
They made it clear that the said individual or group does not speak for Ndigbo.
“It is instructive to note that the Ukachukwu Brothers are law-abiding citizens, with National Honours, who acquired their wealth through dint of hard work and unwavering commitment to excellence; and have contributed immensely to Peace, Development and overall wellbeing of the FCT.
“Nevertheless, it is a pure business matter that must be handled within the ambit of Law, and not with ethnic sentiments.
“It is on this note that we call on Nigerians to disregard the unguided utterances of the said group, as their opinions do not represent Igbo Position.
“We salute the courage and resilience of Mr. President, His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the tireless efforts towards achieving sustainable growth in Nigeria.

Anambra State governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, Tuesday, said his administration would be developing future Olympians and world champions through the 2024 schools sports festivals.

Soludo, who stated this at a press conference heralding the Anambra State School Sports festival tagged “ANSSI 2024", explained that his government was also using sports to fight crimes by engaging the youth and students to effectively utilise their talents for better society.

The governor, represented by his Chief of Staff, Mr Ernest Ezeajughi, argued that those already discovered at the first edition of the sporting events have started contesting and winning laurels at national and international sporting events.

Also speaking, the Chairman, Anambra State Sports Development Commission (ASSDC), Mr Patrick-Estate Onyedum, explained that about 756 primary and secondary schools have indicated interest to participate in the 2024 edition of Anambra State School Sports Festival.

According to him, this year, students would compete in 12 sporting events including Athletics, Basketball, Chess, Football, Scrabble, Swimming, Table tennis, Tennis, Taekwondo, Volleybal, Cricket and Ncho.

"We shall have these games in three categories which are U 12, U-14 and U-18 at the Community, Local Government Area, Senatorial District and State levels. The sports Commission will continue to support them especially in the area of sports infrastructure.

"Already, the preparation for this year's National Youth Games in Asaba, Delta State has started and the young and raw talents that will be discovered from this festival will constitute up to 85 percent of Anambra team to that Games.

"In 2023, about 600 primary and secondary schools registered and participated in the sports festival and I want to gladly inform you that, it was not only a success but it has been yielding fruitful results. As I speak to you, some of those athletes are on academic scholarships in some of the best schools in Abuja and Anambra," he noted.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Youth Development, Mr Patrick Agha-Mbah, explained that sports had been reinvented by the incumbent administration as parts of the governor's effort to produce a liveable and prosperous State.

All is now set for the second round of Nigerian Beach soccer holding at Nnewi, Anambra State from May 15 to 19th, 2024.

This marks a historic milestone as the South East state hosts the tournament for the first time with Kebbi Beach Soccer Club, Anambra Beach Soccer Warriors and Kada BSC participating.

Other participating teams in the event such as Jigawa GS BSC, Kebbi United and Nmanko Patigi BSC, would compete for bragging rights and Super Four qualifications, with the top four teams advancing to the next stage in Kaduna.

The Anambra Beach Soccer Association Board, inaugurated last year, has worked tirelessly to promote the rapid growth of beach soccer in the East. Their efforts have paid off, with the formation of a formidable team that impressed in their debut outing in Kebbi state earlier this month.

"A state-of-the-art Beach Soccer Arena has been constructed by the Anambra Beach Soccer Association Board, providing a world-class venue for the tournament. The four top teams will compete for the coveted prize in Kaduna, after the second round in Anambra state.

Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU), Igbariam has secured partnership with the Centre for Psychic and Healing Administration (CPHA), Awka Anambra State with a view to strengthen indigenous medical practices.

The partnership, which became necessary after the university senate approved Diploma in Herbal Medicine and Nutrition, a-two year professional programme to be ran under the faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences of the University.

A letter of request for the partnership spotted by us showed that the two institutions would use the programme to equip, impart and prepare candidates in the knowledge and use of traditional medicinal plants in the treatment of various diseases, as well as highlights their nutritional benefits.

"The programme is also aimed to strengthen and support our indigenous medical practices as applicable in places like China and India; preserve and maintain our indigenous heritage. Your efforts to promote this for years is hereby well appreciated.

" The areas of emphasis are on tutorials, practical guides, and field trips to your centre by both the Staff and students, particularly our undergraduate Pharmacy students in the Department of Pharmacognosy and Traditional Medicine," it added.

The Dean, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, COOU, Professor Theophine Akunne, confirmed this last Thursday when he led a delegation to CPHA coincided with the visitations of Anambra State Deputy Governor, Dr Onyekachukwu Ibezi.

Akunne assured that the programme would equally help to erase the public misconceptions over the efficiency and effectiveness of using herbal drugs in treating patience without harming their kidneys and others.

Professor Akunne, who used personal experiences, exposures and encounters in life, including his recent visits to China, stressed that African plants and herbal drugs were effective in treating most health challenges if well preserved, harnessed and utilised.

"When I went to China, I saw how they preserve and value herbal medicines even at pharmacies. We don't really know what we have in Africa. Some erroneously believed that they causes kidney problems. African herbs is not harmful to the body.

" They can effectively cure all kinds of diseases. By this collaboration, we will strengthen this knowledge. Our candidate, students and staff will come here on field trips, seek tutorials, advice and information that can help us in advancing the course of African medicinal values. The WHO is now investing into traditional medicines too," he added.

Earlier speaking, the Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Centre for Psychic and Healing Administration, CPHA, Awka, Chief Dr Flora Nkemakonam Ilonzo, thanked the citadel of learning for taking the bold step, which according to her, was in a right direction for Africans today and tomorrow.

Ilonzo, fondly called Anyafulugo, while explaining that every African plant has signature, signifying their medicinal values and efficacy in addressing health challenges, added that the World Bank, WHO, DIA, among others have visited her centre to verify what God has used her to do to mankind healthwise.

According to the philanthropist and humanitarian, over 375 species of African plants in her garden have world verified botanical names labelled by international researchers and scientists, and had been used for healing various diseases like cancer, pile, insanity, among others.

She, recalled how she submitted the formula she used in healing cancer patient to the Chinese authority during her visit in the past, as well as how various government and individuals within and outside Nigeria, had solicited and benefitted from her centre with regards to herbal medicine.
