Professor of Geophysics emerges 7th UNIZIK Vice Chancellor

The Governing Council of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka , led by the Pro- Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Amb. Greg Mbadiwe has appointed Professor Benard Ifeanyi Odoh as the 7th substantive Vice Chancellor of the University.

Odoh, a Professor of Geophysics is of the Department of Applied Geophysics, Faculty of Physical Sciences of the University.

The pro-chancellor, Amb. Greg Mbadiwe, who announced the appointment on Tuesday at the Council Chambers of the University after a rigorous selection process and interview of the 18 applicants for the position, hinted that Odoh came top based on his evidence- based significant experience in university teaching, research and administration.

According to him, the appointment was in accordance with the provisions of Section 4 of First Schedule, Nnamdi Azikiwe Act CAP 139,LFN 2004 as amended by the Universities (Miscellaneous( Provisions) (Amended )Act 2007, and would last for five years effective from October 29, 2024.

“Your Appointment is for a period of five years, effective Tuesday, 29th October 2024. The terms and conditions of your appointment are as approved by the Federal Government for all Federal Universities” the appointment letter confirmed.

Delivering his acceptance speech, Professor Odoh thanked members of the Governing Council and the Vice Chancellor’s Selection Team for finding him worthy for the important assignment, assuring that he would not let them down while working day and night to improve the university in all facets.

“I’m the first alumni of this university to be appointed to this position. I have my first, second and third degrees here so I understand our challenges. Let me assure every one of us, I know there are prejudices and concerns but you are going to judge me by performances not on hearsay. I will serve you well and our university will make progress” he said.

Born on 5th August 1975, Odoh hails from Ezza North LGA, Ebonyi State.

He was a member of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (NAU) Senate from 2010 to 2014 and also served as Special Assistant to the Vice-Chancellor (Academic Matters I)/Coordinator UTME Exercise, 10th June 2014 to Oct. 2014

He was assessed and appointed as a Professor at Federal University Gusau, 2015.

Odoh an Emeritus Secretary to the State Government ( SSG) of Ebonyi State has over 120 research publications published in reputable International Journals, E- Books and Monographs to his credit.

He returned to Nnamdi Azikiwe University in 2019 after resigning from his position as Secretary to the Ebonyi State Government.

He was a Board Member Nnamdi Azikiwe University Confucius Institute and also Member of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Admission and Examination Monitoring Committee.

He had also served as Director of Center for Water Resources Capacity Building Network for the Southeast Zone, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, 16th August 2010 – Oct 2014 as well as Coordinator of UNIZIK Seismic Observatory Station, June 29th, 2010- Oct 2014

He was a Delegate in Higher Education Administration seminar for Anglophone African Countries in three major provinces of China 19th October and 7th November, 2013 sponsored by Chinese Ministry of Education

Also Member, NWRI-UNESCO stakeholders committee for the development of M.Sc. Curriculum in Integrated Water Resources Management for Nigerian Universities.

He is a Member of various professional bodies including the Society of Exploration Geophysics, Oklahoma USA , American Association of Petroleum Geologist , European Association of Geoscientists & Engineers, Nigeria Association of Petroleum Explorationist and the Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society.

He is a Lead Research Consultant to Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC), 2024.

It would be recalled that the newly appointed Vice Chancellor mentored and led NAU Team to 1st position among 26 African universities and represented the African Region in American Association of Petroleum Geologists Imperial Barrel Award (AAPG IBA) Finals in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA, 17 and 19th May, 2013 where they took the 5th position on the global arena.

He was also Member of the voluntary visitors-Leadership Program for Newly- Appointed Nigerian Vice-Chancellors in the United States of America; organized by the US Department of State in Collaboration with National Universities Commission (NUC), 13-23rd October, 2010.

Anambra state government, Tuesday, said it would from November 25th to 29th, 2024 open entry for innovation start-ups centrering on digital health, renewable energy, e-commerce, agritech, fintech, environment, education among others.

The Special Adviser to Governor Chukwuma Soludo on Innovation and Business Incubation, Ms Chinwe Okoli, who disclosed this at a press conference in Awka, presiding the kick off of Solutions Innovation week.

Okoli, who urged Nigeria’s brightest startups to pitch solutions addressing critical societal challenges in various sectors, noted that the startups could be entered by anyone, groups or institutions.

According to her, the governor has instituted N100 million cash prize for the participants which are expected to come from government ministries, agencies, academic institutions, startups, and creators across sectors as detailed in their official website.

"Innovators both in Anambra and across Nigeria are eligible to apply and compete in the Battle4Solutions," she stated, adding that the governor has through the innovative district trained and empowered over 25,000 youths on deep technology skills to compete favourably in global market.

"Through programs like LevelUp Anambra and Code Anambra, we have trained over 25,000 youths on various deep technology skills preparing them for jobs in the global market-and many other them secure such jobs daily, while our SID Teen Digital Bootcamp cultivates a new generation of talented teens poised for future global impact.

She noted that the government has designated a 3.7-hectare plot of land, currently home to the Government House as the permanent site for SID.

She added that the governor has prioritised digital infrastructure, with over 2,000 km of fiber duct being laid across the state for last-mile Internet connectivity, while the Anambra State Startup Law, a domestication of the Nigerian Startup Act was underway to boost an environment that nurtures creativity, entrepreneurship, and sustainable economic growth.

In a bid to enhance the security of the communities, the Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR, has sworn in Mr. Ken Okwuchukwu Emekakayi as the Special Adviser on Community Security.

The event took place at the Government House in Awka on Tuesday

In his speech, Governor Soludo reiterated the importance of community security and stated that it was a top priority of his administration.

He noted that crimes such as armed robbery, and cultism have become rampant in some parts of the state and emphasized the need to tackle these issues head-on.

The Governor expressed his confidence that with the appointment of Mr. Emekakayi to join the larger security team, the state would experience a higher level of security.

Responding, the newly appointed Special Adviser thanked Governor Soludo for the appointment and promised to work tirelessly to ensure that the state becomes a safe haven for residents and visitors alike.

He noted that his focus would be on community policing, intelligence gathering, and collaboration with security agencies to nip crimes in the bud.

The swearing-in ceremony of Mr. Ken Okwuchukwu Emekakayi as the Special Adviser on Community Security in Anambra State marks a renewed commitment by the state government to tackle the rising insecurity in some parts of the state.

With the support of relevant stakeholders, including the police and the State House of Assembly, Mr. Emekakayi is expected to bring his wealth of experience in community development to bear in the fight against crime.

Anti-corruption voices spoke in unison at a one-day workshop in Abuja organized by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offenses Commission (ICPC) in collaboration with the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) and with the generous support of the MacArthur Foundation, aimed at enhancing the role of journalists in combating corruption.

The event, themed " Power of the Pen in the Fight Against Corruption" brought together journalists, ICPC officials, Civil Society Organizations, and Academics to explore the media's influence in promoting transparency, accountability and good governance in Nigeria also navigated collaborative strategies between the media and ICPC at strengthening the war against corruption which has continue to pilfer away the country's commonwealth.

Speaking at the event, the ICPC Chairman, Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu urged journalists to ramp up their efforts in exposing corrupt practices and promoting good governance, pointing out that the media has a unique ability to influence public opinion and mobilize citizens towards collective action against corruption.

“The media is a key ally in our fight against corruption. Without the work of investigative journalists and robust reporting, much of the corruption we see today would remain hidden from the public eye. Journalists' Pen is truly a vital weapon against corruption and I urge all journalists to use them judiciously.”

In his address, the National President of Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Comrade Chris Isiguzo, emphasized the crucial role of the media in the fight against corruption and urged journalists to seize the opportunity presented by the workshop to deepen their commitment to exposing corrupt practices. He added that the power of the pen is undeniably strong enough in exposing corruption.

"The power of the pen is understandable; it can expose corruption, challenge those in power, and empower citizens to demand accountability".

Isiguzo stressed that corruption remains one of the greatest impediments to Nigeria's progress.

"Journalists are the eye and ears of the society. We are often the first to uncover and report on the underhand dealings that threatens the nation's future.

"Today we are gathered her as journalists from across the nation, united by a shared goal to expose the immense potential of the media as a force for positive change, especially in combating corruption".

However, the NUJ President highlighted the inherent dangers that journalists often face while trying to expose corruption. He stated that journalists should not be forced to choose between their duty to the society and their personal safety.

“We need comprehensive policies that guarantee the security of investigative journalists and whistleblowers.

“I call on the government, civil society organizations, and media owners to ensure that journalists are well-equipped and protected, both physically and legally, to investigate and report on corruption without interference".

Earlier, the Country Director of MacArthur Foundation, Dr. Kole Shettima spoke about the importance of balance reporting, urging the media to spotlight positive and transformative stories and also celebrate upright individuals to serve as role models.

Members of the Southern Governors Forum on Monday October 28, 2024 visited Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital, to express their condolences to Governor Pastor Umo Eno following the passing of his wife, Pastor (Mrs.) Patience Umo Eno, who died last month at the age of 57.

The delegation was led by the Forum's Chairman, Prince Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State, and Vice Chairman, Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR, of Anambra State. Other governors present included Peter Mba (Enugu), Francis Nwufuru (Ebonyi), Biodun Oyebanji (Ekiti), and Senator Ademola Adeleke (Osun).

The delegation was received by the Akwa-Ibom State Governor and other State officials

The late Akwa Ibom First Lady, who passed away on September 26, 2024, was known for her commitment to social development through her pet project, the Golden Initiative For All (GIFA). The initiative was designed to address various socio-economic challenges in the state while supporting her husband's administration.

Governor Umo Eno spoke about how his wife's passing was a significant shock to him and his family, but he expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support and solidarity from the Southern Governors

Earlier, the visiting Governors expressed their sympathies to Governor Eno and his family members, offering prayers for strength during this period of loss and for the peaceful repose of the late First Lady's soul.

The solidarity shown by the Southern Governors Forum highlights the strong bonds among state executives in the region, particularly in times of personal loss and bereavement, thus strengthening the values of unity and empathy expected of Nigerian leaders at all times.

A medical expert from Nandi Azikiwe University, Awka, Dr Edith Anyankwo has urged business owners to refrain from over stressing themselves in the name of striving to earn wealth as it could affect their mental health.

Anyankwo, who stated this at Bon Hotel Smith City, Awka, Anambra State, Business summit held on Friday, argued that mental health could affect anyone at any particular point in time.

According to her, improper handling of mental health could lead to sicknesses and death, hence the need to properly take care of them for improved healthy living, wealth creation and management.

The summit, which is 2nd edition to be held by the Smith since it's five years of existence in Awka, was aimed at equipping the youth with skills to create wealth and excel as employers of labour.

The event with a theme, Business Ethics & Sustainability in 21st century, which was attended by captains of industries, entrepreneurs, investors and youth across all fields of endeavours, came at the time Nigeria was yearning for innovators and thinkers to revive her dwindling economy.

Speaking at the occasion, the General Manager, Bon Smith City Hotel Awka, Mr Anthony Zuokemefa, explained that the programme was geared towards harnessing the young generation potentials leveraging in technology and innovation to build profitable and socially impactful businesses.

Contributing, the Sales/Marketing Manager, Bon Smith City Hotel, Mr Arinze Anaegbunam, described the event as their corporate responsibility program which according to him, served as an added voice to the investment drive of the Anambra government.

"The summit was designed to address the issue of deviant involvement in crimes and vices by the youths, causing a positive reorientation, paradigm shift and realignment to purpose. It is a self sponsored one, and for this year 2024, I won't fail to appreciate the Anambra State government, the chairman, the speakers, attendees, everyone who played a role in seeing that the event was a success.

"I believe for greater years to come, and society where the youths are custodians of peace, productivity and progress. We want to educate the youth and ensure they are given adequate orientation that can help them grow to become wealth creators and employers of labour without making mistakes made by their forebearers," he added.

Speaking at the summit, stakeholders including innovators, visionaries and leaders, hailed the management and staff of the hotel for organising such an annual programme despite being just five years of existence in Awka, even as they identified observance of business ethics, having business sustainability plans, focus and training as foundation for business growth.

According to them, businesses mostly collapse when founders lacked legitimacy, were inconsistent, failed to keep to promises or failure to make adequate plans for sustenance of the enterprise even after their deaths.

They also advocated for trustworthiness among the entrepreneurs, while urging them to always carry out feasibility studies, constant research, training and retraining to gain more knowledge and exposures to further opportunities for business growth.

Other recommendations made by the experts were that entrepreneurs should endeavour to invest into the busineses they have access to raw materials, build skills to convert risks and mistakes to growth opportunities, adding that fidelity, credibility and rebranding were equally needed to grow brands.

Speaking at the occasion, a realtor, Mr Chisom Nwafor charged entrepreneurs to identify, focus to their targets, seek training, exposures and other opportunities for developments and expansion of scope of their businesses.

Another speaker and entrepreneur, Mr Jude Obuekwe, who identified leadership as among the challenges crippling the country's economy, insisted that entrepreneurs should always utilise their positions to create and commercialise values so as to gain and impact lives positively.

On his part, Barr. Uchenna Ajator, who hinted that businesses do not exist to only make gains but to impact lives, tasked entrepreneurs to build their customers trusts for legitimacy and social approval.

The Governor of Anambra State, Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR, has expressed profound sadness and deep sense of loss on the passing of a most illustrious Nigerian patriot and former Chairman of the National Electoral Commission (NEC), Professor Humphrey Nwosu, in the early hours of Thursday at the age of 83 in the United States after a brief illness.

In his condolence message, Governor Soludo lamented that Nigeria has lost a true umpire of electoral integrity in Prof. Nwosu, describing him as a distinguished son of Anambra State from Ajali community in Orumba North Local Government Area who brought immense pride to the State through his exemplary service to our nation. His tenure as NEC Chairman from 1989 to 1993 marked a watershed moment in Nigeria’s democratic journey, particularly through his innovative contributions to our electoral process.

The Governor particularly recalled that Prof. Nwosu’s legacy has been eternally etched in Nigerian history as the architect of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, widely acknowledged as the freest and fairest election in our nation’s history. His game-changing innovations, including the Option A4 voting system and the Open Ballot system, earned global recognition and set new standards for electoral transparency in Africa, continuing to influence contemporary discussions on electoral best practices in Nigeria.

Therefore, Governor Soludo extends his solemn condolences to the family of Prof. Nwosu and the Ajali community, praying that his soul find eternal rest and urging all to take solace in knowing that his legacy of electoral integrity and democratic values cannot be forgotten.

In his congratulatory remark, Governor Soludo extolled Ambassador Bianca Ojukwu as a distinguished daughter of Ndigbo and a BOT member of APGA who has consistently demonstrated exceptional leadership qualities in public service. Her extensive background in law, diplomacy, and public service positions her uniquely to excel in the new ministerial role. As a former Ambassador to Spain, she has showcased her commitment to representing Nigeria on the global stage with dignity and integrity.

The Governor equally commended President Tinubu for his pan-Nigerian, inclusive leadership in nominating Ambassador Bianca Ojukwu for a ministerial position.

Her new appointment being a proof of her excellent individual capabilities and a source of pride for the State, the Governor expressed confidence that her experience and dedication will significantly contribute to the advancement of Nigeria’s foreign relations, fostering stronger ties with other nations.

As Nigeria continues to steer its course towards a more effective federal system, the importance of collaboration among the tiers of government cannot be overstated. In fact, structured collaboration is one of the most critical instruments for fostering efficiency and development across the country. It is also a critical ingredient in driving a more efficient Local Government architecture.

Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR, of Anambra State, an ardent advocate of competitive federalism, has canvassed the necessity of cooperation among the Federal, State, and Local Governments to optimise resources and enhance governance. He reminds us that no tier of government enjoys absolute autonomy; rather, it is through strategic collaboration that the collective goals of national development can be achieved.

A striking example of this is in the management of Nigeria’s natural resources. While the Federal Government (FGN) has exclusive control over solid minerals, the states retain exclusive rights over the land. This creates a scenario in which neither the FGN nor the states can fully exploit natural resources without cooperating with the other. A collaborative framework is necessary to ensure that the benefits of these resources are maximised for the common good.

This theme of cooperation extends beyond natural resources. Security, a paramount concern for every Nigerian, is another area where collaboration between the tiers of government is indispensable. Currently, States and Local Governments contribute tens of billions of naira monthly, deducted directly from the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC), to fund the federal armed forces. While security remains under the exclusive purview of the Federal Government, the states are spending substantial portions of their own revenues on logistics and operational support for federal security agencies operating within their borders. This arrangement reflects the reality that neither the Federal nor the State Governments can adequately ensure the safety of the people without mutual support.

Similarly, in the area of education, there is a well-established partnership between the Federal Government and the States. The federal Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) mandates that states provide counterpart funding before federal funds are released for basic education. This not only ensures that both the Federal and State Governments invest in the success of the education system but also allows for federal oversight to ensure that the contributions of states are used effectively. This collaborative framework enhances transparency and ensures that both tiers of government share the responsibility of delivering quality education to Nigerian children.

Governor Soludo also highlights the role of federal oversight in state borrowing. It is a fact that the Debt Management Office (DMO), a federal agency, must clear any State Government seeking to borrow from the domestic financial system. Moreover, the National Assembly must approve any external borrowing by the states. These mechanisms are not designed to stifle state autonomy, but rather to ensure that borrowing is done responsibly and within the bounds of national economic priorities. In this way, the Federal Government provides a necessary check on state finances, ensuring fiscal discipline across the country.

All the foregoing examples underline a fundamental truth about Nigeria’s federal system: no tier of government can function in isolation. The notion of “absolute autonomy,” often touted in discussions about Local Government reform, is unrealistic in a federal structure as complex and interconnected as Nigeria’s. Local Governments, in particular, cannot fulfill their constitutional responsibilities without active collaboration with State Governments. The functions assigned to Local Governments by the Constitution, ranging from maintaining public infrastructure to providing basic healthcare and education, are too vast for them to manage independently, especially given their limited financial and administrative capacity.

Recognising this reality, the Constitution grants state Houses of Assembly the authority to make laws for Local Governments. This arrangement is not a limitation on Local Government autonomy but recognition that Local Governments require the support and oversight of State Governments to function effectively. Without such legal and institutional backing, Local Governments would struggle to manage the resources and responsibilities entrusted to them.

Besides, the Constitution did not create a separate judiciary for Local Governments, reinforcing the idea that Local Governments are not standalone entities but are part of a broader state framework. The state judiciary retains oversight over Local Government matters, ensuring that they operate within the bounds of the law and that disputes are adjudicated fairly. This judicial structure further proves the need for a collaborative approach to governance at the local level.

So, the challenges facing Nigeria, whether in security, education, resource management, or financial discipline, cannot be solved by any one level of government acting in isolation. Instead, these challenges require a concerted effort, where each tier of government brings its unique strengths and resources to the table, ensuring that the collective welfare of the Nigerian people is prioritised.

The Traditional Ruler of Onitsha, Anambra State, Obi Nnaemeka Achebe has urged the Southeast governors forum to forster close ties with other stakeholders towards socioeconomic development of Igbo nation.

Achebe, who stated this at 2024 Ofala festival of the commercial nerve of Africa, argued that the geopolitical zone would become more prosperous as well as surmount her challenges if the governors meet regularly to share ideas and other resources for overall interest of the zone and Nigeria generally.

The monarch, who is leading the Joint Body of South East Council of Traditional Rulers and representatives of Igbo Arch Bishops and Bishops on peace and reconciliation, expressed hope that the Joint Body was persevering with major values orientation exercise for Igbo land which was launched last year.

He, however, lamented over the hate speeches and potential atrocities against the Igbo particularly those living in Lagos and South West, while appealing for peaceful coexistence of the country.

Speaking on the theme for the theme for Ofala festival, "Courage, Perseverance, and Self-Reliance”, Agbogidi urged the federal government to live up to its expectations by addressing the insecurity, high cost of living and other challenges facing the country before it leads to catastrophe.

"Ofala last year, I stated that the previous twelve months were marked by uncertainties occasioned by the aftermath of the general elections, further exacerbated by the continuing insecurity and the effects of the sudden removal of the fuel subsidy.

“Unfortunately the wellbeing of the polity has declined even more steeply in the last twelve months leading to the ten day national protest in August 2024 tagged Endbadgovernance.

“The two areas of most concern are the economy and security. Their combined effects are the spiraling rise in the cost of living business closures,loss of employment, a general feeling of hopelessness and lack of trust in the government, ” he recalled.

Earlier, the Chairman, Ofala Steering Committee, Chief Okechukwu Mike Areh, disclosed that the 2024 “Ofala Eze Onicha," was a call to action, which all should tap into due to their inner strength, collective resilience, and unwavering commitment to one another.

“The theme resonates deeply with our people’s resolve to overcome adversity. As we navigate the challenges of our time, we draw inspiration from our rich cultural heritage and the timeless values of our ancestors. We are proud to showcase our rich cultural heritage and promote unity among our people”, he noted, adding that the Ofala festival holds from October 18th to October 19th, 2024.

Areh further expressed gratitude to sponsors of the festival, including Globacom ltd, and International Breweries Plc, for their continued support, including invited friends and other spirited Nigerians.

He regretted that the Ofala Youth Carnival organised by the Onitsha Youth Council (OYC), would not hold this year as a mark of respect for the murdered leader of the OYC, Barr Ernest A.B.K Offiah.

He, however, disclosed that other events would hold, including, the tenth edition of the international art exhibition (Oreze X), a Medical/health outreach and the 2024 edition of “Obi Nnaemeka Achebe Annual Lecture”, to be delivered by Prof. Pat Utomi on- “Achieving Peace and Reconciliation in Nigeria”: The Public Relations Approach.

Also speaking, the Editorial Publicity Lead, Ofala Steering committee, Mr Tony Nezieanya assured that adequate arrangements, including security were in place to maintain peace and wellness throughout the festival.

The Governor of Anambra State Prof Chukwuma Charles Soludo has described foreign companies exiting Migeria as “opportunistic” firms that jump from one country to another “the day they have itchy feet”.

Governor Soludo spoke earlier today Wednesday in Abuja at the maiden edition of the Abuja Business and Investment Summit organised by the Abuja Investment Company Limited.

The Governor said the “government must learn to derisk certain strategic investment for the private sector” as indigenous “nationals have higher risk appetite to invest in Nigeria”.

He spoke on the theme of the event, ‘Optimising Investment Through Partnerships’. The event also has the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and other dignitaries in attendance.

“Dear friends, there is what we call the new mercantilism and pseudo-nationalism; it’s both a threat and an opportunity. In today’s world, in many countries, new nationalism is back. Economic nationalism is back, new mercantilism is back,” Governor Soludo said.

“People are saying ‘America first’. We must be intentional. The agenda of ‘Nigeria first’ as a philosophy is something that we must mainstream. This will require us to intentionally nurture national champions for sustainability.

“If you see the companies that have pulled out of Nigeria, how many of them happen to be national companies? None. The day they have itchy feet, they jump to the next one (country), they are very opportunistic. extremely opportunistic, no emotions to it. So, for long-term sustainability, we must nurture the domestic capital and build them.”

The Anambra governor expressed hope that “both forex and price level will stabilise and the interest rate and monetary policy will loosen” for business owners to borrow at reasonable rates to have real return on investments

Governor Soludo also said lower interest rates would shore up domestic investment, even foreign investment.

Continuing, he maintained that the oil and gas sector would remain a game-changer for the Nigerian economy, he however encouraged the government of the day to shore up daily oil production to around three million barrels per day to boost forex.

“In the short to medium term, the oil and gas sector will remain the game changer for Nigeria. It is still going to be very critical,” he said, adding that addressing security challenges and fostering ease of doing business would help fast-track economic recovery.

The event which held at the Shehu Musa Yar'adua Centre attracted prominent personalities as well as Heads of Foreign Missions, development partners, organised business sectors, etc

It will be recalled that last Monday, Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR, paid an unscheduled visit to Onitsha main market, where he issued a directive that shop owners should open and trade their wares on Mondays.

The Governor also made commitments to intensify the provision of security every monday.

Today, in continuation of last week's visit, Governor Soludo again embarked on a snap tour of the various markets and locations across the state to monitor compliance with his directive that nobody should sit at home.

Locations visited by the Governor include, Nkwo Igbo-ukwu, Afọr Nnobi, parts of Nnewi, Nkwọ Oraifite, Upper Iweka, Ochanja, among others, as people were seen moving about their lawful businesses amidst tight security by the law enforcement agencies

The governor's message was clear - everyone must work together to maintain both the public and the state's economy.

During the visits, Governor Soludo interacted with some traders, transporters, and residents, stressing the importance of adhering to the government directives.

He also encouraged the business owners to innovate and find creative ways to continue operating their businesses while maintaining a safe environment.

The governor's proactive approach has been well-received by ndị Anambra, who appreciates his efforts to stimulate economic growth.

His moves have also helped to boost morale among small business owners, especially small businesses who have been struggling to keep afloat.

Many residents and traders who interacted with the governor equally lauded his hands-on approach to governance, with some commenting that they feel more connected to their leader because of his efforts to visit and engage with them.

Nigeria Institute of Architects (NIA), Anambra State Chapter, has commended Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo's urban regeneration initiative.

The Institute gave the commendation during its 2024 Annual Conference, with the Theme; Towards a Liveable and Sustainable Urban City: role of professionals in planning and construction,' held at Oba D.A Nwandu Architectural Research Centre, Department of Architecture, Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, on Friday.

They argued that the ongoing tree planting initiative across the three major cities in Anambra, Awka, Onitsha and Nnewi to make the State clean and green and other huge projects like the ongoing construction of Ekwulobia flyover, construction of fun city in Awka and the rehabilitation of Okpoko slum in Ogbaru council area of the state, mass employment in all sectors and the one youth, two skills acquisition programme will remain the major unforgettable achievements of governor Soludo in Anambra State

The Vice Chancellor Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka ably represented by the Deputy vice Chancellor Academic Very Rev. Fr. Arc. Prof. Peter Chukwuemeka Agbonome while declaring the event open, challenged young and old architects in the state to portray the spirit of sportsmanship, hard work, enthusiasm and dedication in their profession, noting that work cooperatively with others within the engineering world remains the major way to curb quackery, incident of building collapse and efficiency.

Soludo who was represented by the State Commissioner for Housing and Infrastructure, Hon Pauly Onyeka, also urged them to be creative and diverse-oriented architects, move beyond designing and building, and develop entrepreneurial master plan and the integrity to strengthen the reputation and values of the profession in line with governor's vision of making Anambra a livable, clean, green and prosperous state in Nigeria.

The Anambra Chairman of Nigerian Institute of Architects, Arc Dr. Ikenna Michael Onuorah, on his address said that the conference would
be helpful in repositioning the chapter and equipping the teeming young architects with the right knowledge for more effective
performance.

He called on the governor to consider the establishment of "Artisan Guild" to pave room for training and re-training of the artisan, especially, the building labourers, popularly known as manson-men carpenters, fitters etc, saying that they contribute to the totality of any construction work in the society.

Earlier in his keynote address, the guest speaker of the event, Arc Asomba Andrew Egbuonu, whose lecture centered on the theme of the conference, urged the Anambra state government to collaborate with the professional bodies and other critical stakeholders to deliver the most liveable and sustainable cities in Nigeria and Africa at large.

"According to him, the Anambra architects, urban planners, engineers, environmental scientists, and other built environment professionals, should be challenged to see to the realization of liveable and sustainable city of Awka, Onitsha and Nnewi in the State.

"Liveable and sustainable urban cities are designed and developed with the primary intention of providing high quality of life for habitants while minimizing the negative impacts on the environment.

They are designed for resilience and prioritize the well-being of residents, providing
for access to clean air and water, affordable housing, transportation, healthcare, education, and recreational spaces.

"I recommend we start identifying our talents and begin the process of harnessing these capabilities as a key element of the Soludo solutions to the improvement of our urban spaces, the speaker stated

The Executive Chairman, Anambra State Physical Planning Board (ANSPPB), Barr Chike Maduekwe who also spoke, urged the Architects to sustained a stronger synergy with other professionals in order to achieved their set goals.

Maduekwe, used the event to warned residents against passing the night in any building in the state undergoing construction.

He noted that the warnings were part of the Anambra government's directive to mitigate building collapse in the state.

The Managing Director Anambra Bureau of Public Procurement who is also Anambra state council member of the Architects registration council lauded Governor Soludo's developmental strides and charged Architects to live up to the expectation.

Hundreds of leaders, women and youths of Ezinano Community in Awka South local government area of Anambra state have escaped what would have passed for a genocide in the state.

This following siege on their community land by heavily armed men of the Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) of the state police command.

The ugly incident occured on Friday in the disputed land between people of Ezinano community in Awka and Umuzuocha Community both in the same council area.

Findings revealed that if not the quick intervention of the State Commissioner of Police, CP Obono Nnaghe Itam by ordering that all the parties leave the scene immediately, there could have been possible bloodbath.

Our Correspondent gathered that the leaders, women and youths of Ezinano Community in Awka had stormed their ancestral land which the Umuzuocha Community is laying claim as their own. only to be confronted by several plain cloth SARS operatives who laid siege to the area.

Trouble was said to have started when the people of Ezinano Community arrived at their land on hearing that members of Umuzuocha Community have started erecting buildings indiscriminately on the disputed land.

The Umuzuocha people also started raising perimeter fences, erosion channels/gutter and other structures on the land without recourse to pending case in court but only to deploy police to the area in order to perfect their heinous crimes.

It was learnt that Ezinano people on arrival were ordered by the SARS Operatives to leave the land or be sent to their early graves, a development which prompted them to raise the alarm and urgently called on CP Obono Nnaghe Itam for their rescue and to wade into the matter.

The people, during the stalemate protested against police invasion on their land.

Mrs.Gloria Chiama, a farmer, called on the relevant authorities to call police to order as "police do not meddle in matters of land dispute between communities and individuals rather maintain law and order."

Recall that elders and leaders of the Ezinano Community had earlier written a petition dated September 11th 2024 to the chairman, Police Service Commission (PSC) which was copied to the Presidency, Inspector General of Police (IGP), Complaint Response Unit pf the Police Force Headquarters Abuja and Commissioner of Police, Anambra State against a senior police officer over alleged meddlesomeness in the same land.

Meanwhile, the State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr Tochukwu Ikenga when contacted, urged the leaders and people of Ezinano Community to come forward with their complaints to the police in the state.

He said, "You know the truth, you and me have been in this Anambra for many years. This particular group (Ezinano people), if they have any issue they should come straight to the command. If they have any issue, they have the numbers of the Commissioner of Police and they have my own number; if they have any issue they can come to the command and lay their complaints."

The prestigious 2024 Presidential Prizes for Secondary Schools in Nigeria were awarded yesterday, honouring the outstanding scholastic achievements of educators across the country.

Among the award categories were Overall Best Teacher, Second Best Secondary School, Second Best Primary Head Teacher, and Second Best Secondary School Principal.

Taking home the top honours for Overall Best Teacher was Nwosu, Joseph Afamefuna of Government Technical College, Osomala, Ogbaru LGA, Anambra.

Mr. Nwosu received a brand new chasis Hundai Accent as his STAR prize and was also named as the number one teacher in the Federal government list - a tremendous achievement.

For Second Best Secondary School, Holy Child Secondary School Isuofia, Aguata LGA, Anambra was recognized for its incredible academic results and dedication to student achievement.

The Second Best Primary Head Teacher award went to Chukwudumeme Franca Adaeze of Aforigwe Primary School Umudioka, Dunukofia LGA, Anambra

Ms. Adaeze has been an integral part of her school community, helping guide her students toward academic success and nurturing their love of learning.

In the category of Second Best Secondary School Principal, Dr. Umezinwa, Grace Amara of Girls High School Uga, Aguata LGA, Anambra, was recognized for her leadership and guidance of her school community.

Finally, it was also announced that the teachers of Anambra took second place in the March Past of the 37 states and Federal Education parastals.

World Teachers' Day is celebrated on October 5th of every year and marked with great enthusiasm and respect by educators worldwide.

Governor Soludo, who is known for his passion for promoting education, joined the celebration of 2024 World Teachers' Day at the Teachers' House in Awka.

Speaking at the occasion, the Governor acknowledged the pivotal role of teachers in society and the importance of their contribution to shaping the future of the nation.

The Governor praised the efforts and dedication of teachers, especially when they had little or no support before he came, and they had to adapt to new teaching methods, ensuring that education continued despite the challenges.

"It is our responsibility to value, respect, and celebrate the contributions of our educators. Their role in guiding and mentoring the children of our society cannot be overstated. We owe them our appreciation and gratitude for their selfless service," said the Governor.

"In Anambra, in terms of education and learning outcomes, we are still at the top of the league. As a result, enrolment in all public schools has gone up to 18 percent.

"Anambra ranks number one in the lowest out of school children in Nigeria. We will continue to excel.

"Education is the bridge to the future. Education is the key, but the teachers have the padlock and the keys.

"Very importantly, the message I leave with you is to be the change that you want to see. Continue to be the example. The children entrusted into your care are watching. They learn more from what you do than what you say.

"I can remember all my teachers today because they left some lasting impressions on me. As teachers, the impressions you leave on your pupils and students will live with them. Some of them will forget, but some will remember. The examples that you give are impressionable, especially those teaching the very little ones. Always remember that.

When some unpatriotic people say that Nigeria is bad, do your own bit. Don't say and lose faith that things have gone bad.

"For teachers, yours is a vocation, not just a job. It is a call. Persist, persevere, and keep on giving value.

Earlier, the Chairman of Nigeria Union of Teachers, NUT, Comrade Chika Chukwudozie expressed optimism that in spite of the challenges in society, teachers have cause to celebrate

She appreciated the Governor on the landmark achievements in all sectors including, massive infrastructure development, revamping of the education sector, overhauling of the health sector, strides in the agriculture sector, one youth, two skills empowerment, war against criminality, among others, pledging the support of teachers for the Governor.

The event was attended by the Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, Chairmen of Anambra State Universal Education Board and Post Primary School Service Commission, Dr. Nkiru Nwadinobi and Prof. Nkechi Ikediugwu respectively, Majority leader at the State House of Assembly, Hon. Nursing mothers and fathers in Anambra State have celebrated Governor Chukwuma Soludo's innovation in the healthcare which included refurbishing of primary healthcare centres and general hospitals across the State.

Others are free healthcare services such as prenatal, antenatal and postnatal care, including delivery, which the governor has made free for both the indigenes and non-indigenes of Anambra State across the 21 Council Areas and 179 communities.

They disclosed this while receiving journalists and Solution Marshalls, a support group comprising commercial transporters in Anambra State, who were on inspection tour of various developmental projects sited by the governor at Okpoko in Ogbaru Local Government Area (LGA) and Ekwulọbịa in Aguata LGA.

Solution Marshalls led by renowned activist, Comrade Osita Obi had embarked on the inspection to ascertain how and where the taxes they pay to the State government were been utilised for the overall good of the State.

The Senior Medical Officer, Okpoko General Hospital, Dr Kenechi Nnaji, had during the visit revealed that they offer free medical care of different categories to expectant mothers, nursing mothers and others.

According to Nnaji, Okpoko General Hospital has accident and emergency ward, labour, theatre, dentist, ward, dentals and other wards but they offer free medical services to women and children.

"You know that most residents here are indigents. So governor Soludo made it possible for everyone, including women and children to be receiving free medical services. Women do free delivery, including cesarean, routine drugs, antenatal, delivery mats, pads and others. We work 24 hours. Our 8 doctors are ready to attend to different medical needs of patients. Unfortunately, the hospital is currently underutilised because we just started," she noted.

The hospital which was built and commissioned by Governor Soludo on 18th March 2024 currently receives about 120 patients every month as against their capacities to treat and offer medical supports and services to over 100 daily.

A pregnant mother, Mrs Nkechi Ugwoke, who spoke to Factcheckng.com at Okpoko, confirmed this adding that the staff of the hospital were hardworking and ever ready to attend to people medical needs while adhering to governor's free medical proclamation.

At Ekwulobia General Hospital counterpart, the senior Medical Officer, Dr. Madubuike Chinelo, while confirming implementation of Governor Soludo’s free medical care, urged the citizenry never to relent to come whenever they feel unwell.

A nursing mother who was spotted at Ekwulọbịa General hospital, Mrs Ngozi Eze, said she was doubting until she decided to enroll during her antenatal care and finally delivered without paying a dime.

A keke operator, Mr Samson Ùgwù described the governor's policy in health sector and infrastructure development as commendable, saying that it was a confirmation that the taxes they are paying were being utilised for the development of the State.

"I don't go to mechanics again because the networks of roads at Okpoko has turned here into a new heaven. We now make more money too. Our wives and children are enjoying his good medical policies too. This is wonderful. We, the Keke riders we support the governor to be reelected in 2025 for overall good of the masses. He is the people governor," he stated.

The Coordinator, Solution marshalls (Transport Sector), Comrade Osita Obi also commended the Governor, whom he described as a governor with human face and a good listener to the cries of people, adding that his administration helped to chase away touts and illegal revenue collectors, introduced Keke riders into health insurance scheme thereby saving their lives from dangers, cultists and other hoodlums.

Obi, who said the support group, comprising commercial tricycle riders, drivers of trucks and other kinds of vehicles in Anambra State, had inspected the pace of works at Amansea-Ebenebe-Ugbenu-Ugbene-Awba Ofemili, including Amansea-Awa-Ufuma road, Awka main town and streets and government house, said he was happy that they were up to standard, adding that the government was utilising people taxes for development of the State.

He also commended him for turning Okpoko around for good which he described as a slum when he was residing their with his mother many years back, noting that the streets light, water and others the governor brought back to alive would speak for him in the 2025 gubernatorial poll.

According to him, Solution Marshalls as an independent and unbiased entity have certified the governor as the most feat to continue as Anambra State governor and would mobilise other transporters, their family and friends to give him 21 over 21 in 2025 poll.

The Civil Society/Media Accountability and Anti-corruption Initiative (CSMAI), a network of CSOs and media practitioners', has unveiled key directorates and action plans to combat corruption and system strengthening in Anambra State.



CSMAI, a programme of Rule of Law and Anti-corruption (RoLAC) Phase II, funded by the European Union and implemented by the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (IIDEA), was established on August 24h, 2024 to amplify citizens’ voices, provide independent monitoring of government operations, advocate for policy reforms, and enhance public awareness on anti-corruption issues.



The group at an inaugural meeting held virtually on Wednesday which was presided over by the Team Lead, Ugochi Freeman, also stressed their commitment towards collaborating with other like-minded local and international organisations with a view to mitigating corruption to a barest minimum in Anambra State.



According to Freeman, the Directorates which included Media and Publicity, Policy and Strategy, Monitoring and Evaluation, Linkages and Partnerships, Secretariat and ICT, would through a collaborative efforts ensure that their 3 months action plans were successfully implemented and possibly amend to extend to one year.



The action plans adopted at the programme marshalled out timelines, including various means they hoped to combat crimes in the State like increased advocacy to relevant ministries, department, agencies and stakeholders,



She said they would on 9th December, 2024 celebrate World Day against Anti-corruption with a walk and symposium in partnership with ANSAC, SSTDI, RoLAC and others, as well as strengthen relationships and understanding towards promoting anti corruption policies, programs, and laws using the media and public enlightenment campaigns.



Freeman further called on all stakeholders to support the Network in achieving its goals and objectives.



The meeting also commended the State Coordinator of RoLAC, Mrs Josephine Onah, while resolving to complement ongoing anti-corruption efforts by the Anambra State Government, including the Anti-Corruption Committee and Service Delivery Transparency Initiative, with a focus on eradicating corruption to enhance service delivery.



Other highlights of the meeting were unveiling of the interim committee of the network led by Ugochi Freeman who is also representing CSO together with Samuel Ololo; Ugochukwu Okeke representing people with disabilities (PWDs) and Alfred Ajayi and Ify Unachukwu representing the media.

Educate Enugwu-Agidi Committee (EEAC), a non-governmental organisation in Enugwu-Agidi community, Njikoka Local Government Area (LGA), Anambra State, Thursday, unveiled the newly renovated and remodeled Mrs. Mary Okam Laboratory Complex, which contains the biology, chemistry, physics labs and an ICT center at the Community Secondary School (CSS) Enugwu-Agidi.

The complex, named after Mrs. Mary Okam (Ojiefiazaoku), an illustrious daughter of Enugwu-Agidi, and a renowned educationist who was passionate about the education of children during her lifetime, was commissioned by the Anambra State Commissioner for Education, Professor Ngozi Chuma-Udeh.

Late Okam's family foundation, Ojiefi Foundation, which is committed to preserving the legacy of their mother invested immensely in this project, is also committed to supporting EEAC efforts to erect new buildings to accommodate the increasing population of secondary school-age children in Enugwu-Agidi.

EEAC is a group of like-minded and education passionate individuals from Enugwu-Agidi, whose members are Prince Dr. Chinedu Ikeanyi - Coordinator, Engr. Victor Onwundinjo - Project Coordinator, Chief Nnamdi Okam, Engr. Nnoli Okoye, Ozo Sunny Okoye (Obah), Mrs. Angela Aguolu, Evang. Mrs. Irene Nwachukwu, Dr. Chisom Nwaneki and Mr. Ebuka Okeke (Teacher/School Rep). They also have associate members and donors such as Ozo Innocent Obiorah, Engr. Chuks Nwodili, Dr. Samuel Anameze, Chief Osita Nwanisiobi, Ozo Clem Aguiyi and Ichie Emeka Onuorah.

In this era of emphasis in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), EEAC is committed to ensuring that both secondary schools have modern, functional science laboratories. At CSS specially, most of their facilities were previously burnt and destroyed by herdsmen and other hoodlums, thereby forcing the community members to attend school at far distance neighbouring communities due to absence of science teachers and equipment for science practical class.

According to one member of the EEAC, “We want to stop the current practice of our children going to Amawbia or Awka schools for their secondary school experiences simply because there are no functional science labs at Enugwu-Agidi schools.”


In addition to the Lab Complex, there was also a groundbreaking ceremony for a new 6-bedroom Corpers’ Lodge, which upon completion, will be a gigantic six self-contained bedrooms for youth corpers. The goal is to ensure that the school will be well-staffed at all times with comfortable, free accommodation provided for youth corpers posted to the school.

These community initiated and funded projects are coordinated by the members of Educate Enugwu-Agidi Committee (EEAC), which sought for and received donations from many generous indigenes of Enugwu-Agidi who are committed to ensuring that every Enugwu-Agidi child receives quality education at any of our two public secondary schools.

The total cost for rehabilitating the Laboratories Complex at Community Secondary School, Enugwu-Agidi, is about N25m, while N6.5m was expanded on rehabilitation of the 2-Classrooms of the 6-Classrooms block at Government Technical School, Enugwu-Agidi. Ozo Innocent Obiorah single handedly funded the 2-Classrooms of the 6-Classrooms block rehabilitation at Government Technical School, Enugwu-Agidi in partnership with ASUBEB.

Enugwu-Agidi Brotherly Union (EBU) National Executive Committee actually started the rehabilitation work by doing the wooden roof truss but got stuck for over one year before EEAC took over and completed the works. The steel doors and windows were installed by the EBU NEC after EEAC had fabricated theirs, some of which were thereafter used in the ASUBEB rehabilitated 5-Classrooms block in the School.

EEAC is a subsidiary of the Matrons and Patrons Club of CSS and GTC Enugwu-Agidi, a committee which was formed by both the principals of CSS Enugwu-Agidi, Mrs. Teckla Ekwy Azubuike, and her counterpart, Mrs. Lip Ogbobe, the principal of Government Technical College (GTC) Enugwu-Agidi, in response to Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo charge to the principals.

Soludo had charged School principals in Anambra State to mobilize the indigenes of the towns where they are assigned to, to assist in developing local schools. Today’s event is a testimony to how the people of Enugwu-Agidi have responded to Governor’s Soludo’s vision.

The goal of EEAC, it was learnt, is to wipe out illiteracy in Enugwu-Agidi by ensuring that any child of secondary school age has access to a quality school on Enugwu-Agidi soil. To achieve this goal, the Committee said it was committed to rebuilding and remodeling the aging and dilapidated buildings and infrastructure at both secondary schools in the community.

Speaking at the occasion the National Coordinator, EEAC, Dr Chinedu Ikeanya, represented by Engr. Victor Onwudinjo, recalled that the group had in the past built security post for the school, as well as provide other infrastructure to the Government Technical College, recruit and pay teachers to boost their teaching and learning.

Ikeanya, who commended Anambra State government for providing perimeter fencing to the College, implored them to assist with the provision of more manpower and all the necessary lab equipment for maximum benefits to the students.

"We have done our part as a community, and it is now up to the government to meet us halfway by providing modern science equipment for the labs and ICT Center," he stated.

On her part, the Principal, Community Secondary School, Enugu-Agidi, Mrs. Teckla Ekwy Azubuike, thanked the Association and Anambra State government for coming to their rescue, noting that the laboratory, corpers lodge and other basic amenities would help in making the place conducive for effective teaching and learning.

Azubike, who recalled that assistance of the school and government was why the staff and students had increased in recent time, however, urged for provision of more security, science teachers and infrastructure development.

Also speaking, the Traditional Ruler of Enugwu-Agidi, HRH Igwe Michael Okeke-Uche, urged governor Soludo to come to their rescue by fortifying the community and schools security with a view to enabling them combat insecurity, even as he called for improved security presence to save the community from the hands of kidnappers and other security challenges.

Igwe Okeke-Uche, who recalled how herdsmen and other hoodlums set the secondary school's dormitory and other infrastructure ablaze in the past, praised the government for providing perimeter fencing and EEAC for building a security post, providing them with more teachers, laboratory and other infrastructure development.

He further called on governor Chukwuma Soludo to remember the community by providing them with road and other basic amenities which he believed would assist them in attracting more development.

Responding, the Education Commissioner, Professor Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, commended the community for keying into governor Chukwuma Soludo's Public Private Partnership (PPP) which she said was aimed at deepening development at grassroots level.

She assured the CSS that the ministry of education was ready to post more school teachers to them according to their request, as well as partner with EEAC and other like-minded individuals to improve the institution for effective teaching and learning.

The Chairmen of the 21 local government areas of Anambra State who were elected in last Saturday's Local Government Council Areas election have been sworn in.

Governor Chukwuma Soludo inaugurated them at the Executive Chambers, Government House, Awka.

Those sworn-in include, Chibueze Ofobuike (Aguata), Ifeanyi Chiweze (Anambra East), Fidelis Nnazo (Anambra West), Romanus Ibekwe (Anaocha), ThankGod Anago (Awka North), Chinedu Okafor (Awka South), and Alphonsus Ofumelu (Ayamelum).

Others were Chijioke Ozumba (Dunukofia), Chimezie Obi (Ekwusigo), Stanley Nkwoka (Idemili North), Amaka Obi (Idemili South), Anayo Orjiako (Ihiala), Chinedu Ononiba (Njikoka), Echezona Anazodo (Nnewi North) and Chinedu Ezeogidi (Nnewi South).

Also sworn-in were Franklin Nwadialu (Ogbaru), Anthony Nwaora (Onitsha North), Emeka Orji (Onitsha South), Casmir Nwafor (Orumba North), Shedrack Azubuike (Orumba South) and Emma Nweke(Oyi).

The Deputy Chairmen of the local government areas were also sworn-in.

Governor Soludo tasked the newly inaugurated local government mayors to champion and deepen development at the grassroot level.

The Governor congratulated the mayors on their election victory, emphasizing the need for collaboration between the state government and the local governments to ensure that the state continues to experience its current growth and progress trajectory.

While urging them to focus on providing basic amenities to the people and improving the lives of the citizens in their various constituencies, Governor Soludo also emphasized the importance of accountability and transparency in the handling of public resources, advised them to avoid corrupt practices and ensure that public funds are used judiciously to benefit the people.

Responding to the Governor's remarks, the Mayor of Aguata, Dr. Ofobuike, Idemili South, Mrs Obi, their Anaocha counterpart, Comrade Ibekwe, and Oyi, Mr Nweke expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve their communities, pledging to work hard to deliver on the promises made during their election campaigns and to ensure that their local government areas experience tangible development.

The meeting ended on a positive note, with the Governor and the local government chairmen expressing enthusiasm for the collaboration that would bring about positive change in the state.

It is expected that the meeting will serve as a platform for greater cooperation and coordination between the state government and the local governments, with a focus on improving the lives of ndị Anambra.

Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR, has shared a message of hope of a greater future Nigeria.

Governor Soludo was speaking during a parade ceremony to celebrate Nigeria's sixty fourth Independence Day Celebration held at Dr. Alex Ekwueme Square, Awka.

"We've gathered yet again this year to celebrate Nigeria's 64th Independence anniversary. Despite our challenges and triumphs, we have made progress.

"Challenges are many, but amidst all, my message is that our tomorrow will be greater than our today. I see hope. I see prosperity. I see joy.

"We are here to remember the dreams of our founding fathers and the leaders that flew the flag at our independence. We remember all the victims at this hour and all those who suffered in one way or the other-poverty, malnutrition, the sick that we could not provide with adequate hospital care and so on and so forth".

The governor revealed that to build the Nigeria of our dream, all Nigerians need to come together so that the nation can be blessed with peace and plenty.

"Nigeria will soon become one of the top five biggest economies in the world if we put our resources together. We are blessed with abundant human and material resources. I see hope in our children and youth.

"Wherever we fail, our prayer is that these children will take over and succeed.

"We must work very hard to give them a secured future, to have a secured Nigeria," the governor stressed.

"In Anambra, ours is an agenda with a deadline. Thirty months in office, we are running to make sure we deliver on our administration's five pillars of development.

"In this occasion, I want to thank the members of the Armed forces, security agencies who are working to secure our state.

"Again, at this moment, we appreciate and celebrate our past triumphs while looking at the future," the governor said.

"Last Saturday, we kept one of the promises we made to ndị Anambra by organising the local government election. It is a promise made and a promise kept. It is adjudged to be one of the most free and transparent elections. Notice for the election was given forty-eight days, during which APGA transversed the whole state, campaigning for votes.

"For us, the election was a referendum for us in Anambra State. I'm very proud that ndị Anambra rose up to cement the fact that Anambra is APGA and APGA is Anambra.

The governor expressed optimism that the future is brighter.

"You sent a very important message last Saturday. I want to appreciate the ANSIEC, security agencies, and the other eight political parties that participated in the election. The key word is participation.

"For us, we are focusing on delivering the dividends of democracy. At the state level, for me, it is governance and dividends of democracy. That's the job we applied for. That's the job you gave to us. "

The Governor went on to recall his administration's new policy of total free education and implementation of the new minimum wage of 70,000 naira from October, as part of efforts to leave no segment of the society behind, consistent with the difficult times where everyone needs a salary raise.

"Because of the priority we attach to our children, we want to ensure that our children in all public schools will now enjoy totally free education.

"Those that have already paid school fees, go back and collect the fees that you've paid. The government will provide the resources.

"The state government will also continue to subsidize the schools returned to the churches. As we speak, there are thousands of government teachers we posted to those schools, and it costs the government over 1 billion naira monthly. We hope to continue in that partnership.

"Also, we have discovered that there are 77 communities that do not have government primary and secondary schools. There is something wrong. All our children must be given the opportunity to choose.

"We therefore call for partnership in this regard; to at least have public schools in every community in Anambra. We are taking this education as a matter of life and death to secure a bright future for our children.

"Ndị Anambra, I conclude by saying," Let's do it together. " I read about the dreams of our founding fathers. We can attain the dreams and even much more if we all work together.

"Everybody has something to offer. Let us always ask ourselves what we have done to make Nigeria better. Nigeria will be far greater than we ever dreamt if we work together, "he added.

ANSIEC accredited election observers for the Anambra State Local Government election have commended the State governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo for providing the commission with necessary support which led to the successful conduct of the 2024 Council poll.

Anambra State residents had last week Saturday, September 28 held Council poll during which the candidates of All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) thrashed other political party candidates to emerge as elected Chairmen of 21 LGAs and Councillors of 326 electoral wards.

Over 100 observers for the poll, duly accredited by the electoral umpire, Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC), having monitored the election across the polling units, said it was successful due to governor's commitment to his campaign promises and passion to drive democracy to the grassroots.

The Coordinator ANSIEC accredited election observers, Prince Chris Azor, who gave the commendations while addressing a post election press conference at Awka, Anambra State capital, said they were impressed with the conduct of the officials of the electoral umpire, impartiality of the security and voters during and after the election.

Azor, who is also State Coordinator, International Peace and Civic Responsibility Centre (IPCRC), said they did not observe any irregularity, vote buying and violence even though there were low turnout of voters and late commencement of the proccess at some polling units.

He, therefore, advocated for governance reforms, integrity and capacity building in Local Government Administration with a view to strengthening democracy in the third of tiers of government which had suffered prolonged absence of democracy in the past.

"It's our observation that the Anambra State Local Government Election of Saturday 28th September, 2024 held as scheduled. The election organized and conducted by the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC) was free, fair, credible and peaceful.

"The exercise witnessed initial delay in commencement due to logistics and personnel challenges. However, polls eventually progressed smoothly without any recorded conflict, violence or malpractices.

"We sincerely, commend the election management body, ANSIEC, security agencies, sundry stakeholders and most importantly, the citizens of Anambra State who came out to exercise their franchise after over ten (10) years of waiting for democracy at the local government level.

"We also, sincerely appreciate our observers team and partners, the media and political parties for their peaceful conduct and patriotism. We recommend better strategic logistics management to forestall delays in commencement of polls. In the course of our work, we observed inadequate provision of voting cubicles as required by secret ballot principle. This gap needs to be filled as best practice.

"In future elections there's need to commence early voter education and citizen sensitization for improved voter turnout. We observed high number of voters in some polling units. We therefore, recommend splitting of polling units to contain fewer number of voters not exceeding five (5) hundred," he stated.

As in Imo, Sokoto, Kwara where the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) swept the entire positions and Enugu where the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) cleared the entire slots, the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has emerged victorious in the 28 September 2024 local government elections in Anambra State, securing all chairmanship and councillorship seats across the 21 local government areas.

Announcing the results late Sunday at the headquarters of the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission in Awka, the Commission’s Chairman, Genevieve Osakwe, confirmed APGA’s clean sweep.

Osakwe declared that APGA candidates won all 21 chairmanship seats and councillorship positions in the state, noting that the results were declared at the ward level.

She described the election as the “fairest,” emphasising that the commission meticulously collated and analysed the results to avoid errors.

“The commission carefully collated and analysed the results to ensure accuracy,” Osakwe said.

She also praised security agencies for maintaining peace and order throughout the electoral process.

She affirmed, “This is to confirm the results of the chairmanship and councillorship elections held on 28 September 2024. The polls were free, fair and credible, and APGA candidates were returned elected, having scored the highest number of votes.”

Meanwhile, Election observers and Civil Society Organisations in Anambra State, who monitored the election, have all praised and commended the peaceful conduct of the elections, describing as it as one of the most credible and fairest elections witnessed in the country in recent times.

*SOLUDO DEEPENS DEMOCRACY WITH HISTORIC LG ELECTIONS*

In a remarkable display of democratic progress, Anambra State has just concluded what can only be described as the most peaceful, free and transparent local government election in its history. The election, which took place on Saturday, September 28, 2024, across all 21 Local Government Areas of the state, has set a new benchmark for electoral conduct in Nigeria.

The Governor of Anambra State, Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR, who has been at the helm of affairs for 2 years and six months now, deserves commendation for orchestrating this feat, successfully breaking an 11-year jinx. He made the promise, and has now walked the talk. His commitment to transparent governance and democratic principles has been evident throughout the electoral process, from preparation to execution.

As a matter of fact, the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC) played a crucial role in the success of this election. Unlike previous elections marred by logistical challenges, this time, voting commenced promptly across the state. The smooth process, peaceful conduct of voters, and swift collation of results are proofs of ANSIEC’s meticulous planning and execution.

Leading by example, Governor Soludo cast his vote at his Ofuiyi Square polling unit 002, Umueze-Isuofia, in Aguata Local Government Area. His presence and participation underscored the importance of this grassroots election. In his words, “Today is a promise made and promise kept.” This statement again reflects the governor’s loyalty to strengthening local governance, a crucial aspect of democracy often overlooked or downplayed by state governors in Nigerian politics.

The governor’s assessment of the election as “seamless” and “an example of what an election should be” is not playing to the gallery. Reports from across the state corroborate this view, with widespread accounts of orderly proceedings and transparent vote counting. The emphasis on “one man, one vote” and the insistence on open, transparent vote counting are significant steps towards building trust in the electoral process.

It is worth noting that this election comes after an 11-year hiatus in local government elections in Anambra State. This long gap had created a democratic deficit at the grassroots level, which Governor Soludo’s administration has now addressed. By reviving local elections, the state government has rekindled citizen participation in grassroots governance.

The resources and effort invested in this election, including extensive campaigns across all 326 wards, demonstrate the government’s seriousness about local governance. As Governor Soludo further pointed out, this election serves as a litmus test for his administration’s performance and a precursor to the upcoming gubernatorial election in 2025.

While the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), the governor’s party, is anticipating victory, the true winner of this election is democracy itself. The peaceful conduct of voters, the transparent process, and the prompt collation of results are victories for all Anambra citizens, regardless of party affiliations.

In a way, this election undeniably shows that with political will and proper planning, credible elections are possible at all levels of government. As we celebrate this landmark electoral feat, it is crucial to maintain the momentum. The challenge now is to ensure that the elected local government officials will serve their constituents diligently and that this level of electoral integrity becomes the norm rather than the exception.

Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR, joined thousands of celebrants to mark Nigeria's 64th Independence Day Service at the Cathedral Church of St. Faith, Awka.

The Independence Day Service, also known as the Interdenominational Church Service, is an annual event that brings together Nigerians of all faiths to pray for the country.

The event featured hymns, prayers, and exhortations from religious leaders and the choir.

The governor arrived at the venue of the service alongside his deputy, Dr. Onyekachukwu Ibezim, Chief Judge, Justice Onochie Anyachebelu, Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Solo Chukwulobelu, Chief of Staff, Mr Ernest Ezeajughi and members of the State Executive Council.

Governor Soludo, in his remarks, thanked the organizers of the event, stressing the need for continued prayers for the nation and its leaders.

"Today's service is a reminder that we are first and foremost citizens of Nigeria, and we all have a role to play in building a strong and prosperous nation. Let us continue to pray for our leaders and the country at large," he said.

"Today is Thanksgiving in commemoration of Nigeria as a sovereign nation. Your Grace, I appreciate your message. It is very well taken. We have important take homes.

"You admonished us that we had a glorious past before crude oil came. The message that Nigeria will be better or not depends on us. It is based on this that I bring you a message of collective responsibility.

"Yearly, it appears that Nigeria's past is always glorious than our today."

Borrowing from the late Sunny Okosun's song forty years ago, the Governor enjoined the congregation; "Let's save Nigeria, so Nigeria won't die."

"It is good to complain but better to do something about a bad situation. If you are living in an underdeveloped country, you must be multi-tasking - get a farm or something else.

The governor called on the clergy to use the power of the pulpit to mobilize the people to action.

"On this 64th anniversary, we must emphasize that as government, here on earth, we must all do the work of God," the governor stated.

The governor also refreshed the people on his administration's achievements and assured them of his unwavering commitment to improving the lives of the people of the state.

He recalled that his government recently announced free education policy for senior secondary students in public schools as well as the commencement of the minimum wage by October.

"Last Thursday at the Dora Akunyili Women's Development Centre, we announced that by October, we will start paying the minimum wage in Anambra. We also announced the extension of free qualitative education to senior secondary students in public schools in Anambra state.

"For too long, government has not paid attention to the poor. We are doing so to leave no one behind. We will also continue to subsidize returned mission schools.

"It costs us over 1 billion naira, monthly. It helps the church in moderating the money they charge in their own schools

"We are also working to ensure that 77 communities in Anambra who don't have public schools do so. We are now working to ensure that our children must have a choice. It happened in the 70s, but we must go back to it, "the governor added.

Earlier in his message, the Archbishop Ecclesiastical Province and Bishop of Awka Diocese, Most Rev. Alexander Ibezim reminded attendees of the significance of Nigeria's Independence and the need for unity and love for one another.

Archbishop Ibezim urged Nigerians to eschew hatred, nepotism, and tribalism.

"This year's Interdenominational Church Service is an opportunity for us to come together as a nation and pray for our country, especially our dear state of Anambra.

"It is a privilege for the church to celebrate Independence service in the church.

"Nigeria was formerly good until something happened. Presently, there is no middle class in Nigeria.

"You must understand that there is a lot of suffering and slavery in the land, but God gave hope, despite the situation.

"God specially trained Moses for such hard times. To lead well, every leader must emulate the life of Moses.

"Leaders should always give the message of hope and possibility of change and survival of the people.

"The people you are leading are not animals. We must show the people that tomorrow must be better; both the national and state governments.

"Truth is that it is better to live in Nigeria than live outside the country. True and responsible leaders with conscience lead during difficult times, "he said.

He reminded the congregation that righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach, calling on them to walk in righteousness.

The 64th Independence Day Service ended with the National Pledge, with attendees departing amid a glorious hope that Nigeria would become a great nation in the near future, with the Governor offering an optimistic note of saying that the state shall continue to participate in more of such life-defining events in Nigeria.

Service Commanders in Anambra state, the Judiciary the clergy, among others, also attended the service.

Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR, has announced the new policy of free education for senior secondary students in all public schools in the state.

Governor Soludo gave the disclosure at Professor Dora Akunyili Women's Development, Awka, while exchanging views with principals and head teachers in all public schools in the state.

This is in addition to the ongoing policy of free education for pupils from kindergarten to JSS 3.

The Governor equally directed that senior secondary students who have paid their school fees for the term should be refunded their monies.

"Yes! we now have a truly free education in Anambra.

"In all public schools, we should be able to guarantee that every child has access to free and qualitative education, especially to the poorest of the poor.

"For those who have collected, refund the school fees money back to the parents.

"We have posted over 2000 teachers to mission schools as a way of subsidizing education.

"There are no smart teachers without smart schools. We are gradually upscaling technology in our schools, with the current laying of over 2000 fibre optic cables.

"Because we declared truly free education from Nursery, primary and JSS three pupils and students, enrolment in public schools increased by 18 percent and out-of-school children dropped by 2 percent, making Anambra the number one state with the lowest percentage of out-of-school children.

"Human capital is our greatest asset. We are working to create a human capital that is productive at home and exportable abroad, leaving no one behind as true progressives.

"With this latest initiative, we will be putting thousands of money back to the pockets of ndị Anambra," the Governor stressed.

He equally disclosed that there are about 77 communities in Anambra without public schools, pointing out that his administration is working to address the concern and provide options for ụmụ Anambra, assuring to continue to provide the resources for continuous learning by teachers.

"Securing our future is a collective effort. We must seize the opportunity now.

"It is the greatest investment we can make"; Governor Soludo added.

Governor Soludo also used the opportunity to announce that Anambra State government will begin payment of the 70,000 naira minimum wage from October, 2024, saying that inspite of the binding resource constraint, his administration will continue to work round the clock, to deliver on their mandate.

"We inherited arrears of pensions and gratuities. We will soon complete the payments.

"Anyone that retires under my watch usually get their entitlements after successful documentation.

"Though I have approval to borrow 100 billion naira since I came in, we haven't borrowed. This is because we don't want to encumber the future. I will borrow to build capacity for the future.

"Under my watch, we are going to maintain fiscal sustainability".

The Governor enumerated the strides of his administration in all sectors of the state economy, including recruitment of 8115 teachers, recruitment of over 1000 doctors and health personnel, empowerment of 5000 youths with additional 8000 youths, for the "one youth, two skills" entrepreneurship scheme, rebranding of three general hospitals, building of five brand new general hospitals, renovation of primary healthcare centers, free antenatal care and delivery services for pregnant mothers, leading to near zero mortality, ongoing construction of the Solution Innovation District, palm and coconut seedlings' revolution, updating of the STEM education, payment for funding of UBEC, among others.

International IDEA- Rule of Law and Anti-corruption (RoLAC II) programme, a European Union funded programme has urged the media and civil society organisations (CSOs) in Anambra State to form a network for easy promotion of actions and programmes geared towards ensuring transparency and accountability in governance.

The Anambra State Coordinator of the programme, Mrs Josephine Onah gave the charge at Awka, the State capital, during the establishment of Anambra State Civil Society and Media Accountability and Anti-corruption Network on System Strengthening against Corruption, noting that collaborations of the two would help to sanitise the system.

According to her, the network would promote anti-corruption, justice sector reforms and inclusivity laws which included Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) law, Public Procurement Law, Child Rights Law, Administration of Criminal Justice Law (ACJL), Sexual assaults referral centre, State Disability Rights Law, State Anti-corruption Law, Anambra State Physical Responsibility law, and Anambra Public Complaints law.

Other objectives of the network included attracting and collaborating with relevant government agencies and international and organisations, advocating for policy reforms and institutional strengthening measures aimed at preventing corruption, promoting transparency and public awareness against the in-depth of corruption in governance and society generally.

She informed the meeting of a new model RoLAC conceived for system strengthening for transparency and accountability in the state through coordinated approach under a Service Delivery Transparency Initiatives.

This approach, according to her, was meant to activate service delivery widows in various Ministries, Department and Agencies (MDAs) with a view of making them effective, having also engaged with the state to commence service delivery initiatives at 6 model Local Government Areas (LGA) and 3 health facilities under the Ministry of Health.

Contributing, the Anambra State Head of Service (HOS), Barr. Theodora Igwegbe, represented by Mrs Jessy Obuekwe, praised the initiatives, assuring the readiness of civil servants to support actions and programmes geared towards eradication of corruption to a barest minimum in the State.

Earlier, the Coordinator of the CSO and media network and Director, Creative Minds Center for Youth and Community Development, Ms Ugochi Freeman, assured that her management team would work in collaboration with all members towards achieving the objectives of the group.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Monday, attributed the increased number of auto crashes often record nationwide to quest to meet up with high expectations, reckless driving, drug abuse, use of rickety and poorly maintained vehicles.

The Sector Commander, FRSC, Anambra State command, Joyce Nnennaya Alexander, who disclosed this during a courtesy call by the executives and stakeholders of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Anambra State Council, said this was why they would never relent in sensitising the public on safety measures to be adopted to escape this.

According to her, most times commuters load more goods in rickety and poorly maintained vehicles, abuse alcohol, illicit drugs and other substances and drive recklessly in order to meet up with family and personal expenses during the Yuletide.

This according to Alexander, often lead to auto crashes which the public sometimes, erroneously believed to be caused by evil spirits and village people jealous of people wealth or prosperity.

"There are no evil spirit or village people pursuing people on highways during the ember months or Christmas and New year seasons. Deaths often recorded this season are causing by our insatiable nature... some tend to make more money to meet up with their respective expectations.

"In the process, people drive all manners of vehicles both old and rickety vehicles, some poorly maintained. Some do this under the influence of illicit drugs and substances. There are those who do not sleep in the quest of making more money and other adventures. At the end, they consume bitter kola believing it will prevent them from sleeping while driving but it often fails and lead to loss of lives and property," she stated.

The FRSC boss said they would increase the road safety awareness campaign towards reducing auto crashes in Anambra especially at the Yuletide by going beyond motor-parks, including schools, offices, associations and industries through town-hall meetings and media.

"My coming to Anambra State is to make Anambra road users and residents feel the impact and importance of establishment of FRSC. We will work with all the stakeholders to achieve this. We value engagement of all the stakeholders through town hall meetings, media campaign and other strategies. In this ember months, we will go beyond motor-parks campaign.

" The command is also planning to resuscitate road safety clubs in schools, train media practitioners, rejig and induct more people into the special Marshall unit for improved road safety campaigns. We also believe in enforcement of road safety laws. We will enforce them whenever the needs arises. We will also take advisory or precautionary actions when needed. I count on your supports to surpass what my predecessors achieved in road safety in Anambra State," she added.

The Chairman of NUJ, Anambra State Council, Dr Odogwu Emeka Odogwu had during the courtesy call praised the road safety boss for all she had achieved in road safety education, assuring her that the council was ready and willing to partner with the command for safety of our roads within and after the Yuletide.

Also speaking, the NAU Matriarch and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Paul's University Awka, Professor Chinyere Stella Okunna, urged the Sector commander never to underate the power of the media, because according to her, utilising them would contribute immensely towards her success story, while protecting lives and property on the road.

In governance, there are the run-of-the-mill politicians, and there are progressive leaders. The former often make electoral promises that citizens take with a pinch of salt, as such promises may never be fulfilled. Yet, the latter belong to a class of progressive minds who make promises and fulfil them, believing that true leadership is about integrity and accountability.

The progressive, trustworthy class of leaders is undoubtedly where the Governor of Anambra State, Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR, belongs.

Governor Soludo is a leader who walks the talk. During his campaign and before he became the governor, he already made a promise to hold local government elections in a state where such elections had not been conducted in a long time. Yet, impatient opposition politicians went to town making baseless allegations that the governor did not want to hold the LG elections. Dealing with institutional issues and legal frameworks which needed to be put in place first, before the conduct of the elections, the governor had already fixed December this year for the election before the recent Supreme Court judgment mandating LG elections with immediate urgency across the country to give effect to the LG autonomy ruling.

Here we are, and the LG elections will be held in Anambra State this Saturday, September 28, 2024. Governor Soludo’s speech at the recent APGA Mega Rally clearly confirms his commitment to progressive leadership, particularly by promptly complying with the Supreme Court ruling as a law-abiding leader. His address at the APGA rally goes further to highlight his achievements as an APGA governor and also reflects his deep-rooted belief in grassroots governance and empathy for the underprivileged and uncompromising democratic values.

In his speech, Governor Soludo specifically emphasized that this upcoming elections mark a “promise made, promise kept,” reflecting his determination to restore democratic processes at the local level after years of stagnation. The last local government elections in Anambra were held in 2014, and as the Soludo administration is set to conduct elections on September 28, 2024, he is demonstrating a progressive approach to governance and accountability.

Beyond the politics of the elections, Governor Soludo’s belief in local government administration as a vehicle for grassroots development has already been evident throughout his tenure. He articulated that local governance is crucial for fostering community engagement and addressing the specific needs of Anambra residents. By prioritising local elections, he reaffirms his identity as a grassroots leader, committed to ensuring that the voices of ordinary citizens are heard and represented in governance. His administration has also introduced innovative structures to enhance local governance, such as community involvement in decision-making processes, thereby empowering citizens at the grassroots level.

A remarkable attribute of Governor Soludo’s leadership is his continuing empathetic disposition towards the downtrodden and marginalized in society. He has consistently advocated for policies that uplift the poor, including free education initiatives and healthcare programmes benefiting thousands of women and children in the state. His administration’s focus on human capital development, training youth for digital jobs, clearly shows a responsive approach aimed at creating opportunities for all Anambra citizens, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds. This commitment to inclusivity aligns with his vision of leaving no one behind in Anambra’s development narrative.

As a proven democrat, Governor Soludo’s emphasis on democratic principles is another cornerstone of his leadership style. He has reiterated his conviction in free and fair elections, assuring citizens that their votes will count. His call for active participation in the electoral process reflects a genuine commitment to democratic values. By encouraging citizens to engage in grassroots politics and emphasizing transparency in governance, the governor proves himself as a true democrat who values the opinions and choices of his constituents.

Beyond these progressive attributes, Governor Soludo’s vision for Anambra encompasses extensive infrastructural development and economic transformation. His administration has made a significant impact in road construction and technological advancement, aiming to position Anambra as a hub for innovation and economic growth. The ambitious projects like the Silicon Valley-model initiative illustrate his forward-thinking approach aimed at harnessing technology for state development.

Thus, as Ndi Anambra go to the poll this Saturday, they can cast their votes for APGA candidates again across the LG areas and wards, having the assurance that APGA is the party of the people and Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo remains a leader they can trust through his commitment to grassroots governance, empathy towards marginalised communities, dedication to democratic principles, and visionary initiatives aimed at transforming Anambra State.

True leaders in any society always think and see beyond their immediate environment. They see humanity in broad strokes of fluid existence where everyone is connected to others. And as they are always guided by the credo that what happens to one happens to all, they act accordingly.

The horrendous flood disaster that ravaged Borno State in Northern Nigeria lately offered a veritable opportunity for true leaders to show their empathetic stuff. At a time when Nigeria is facing diverse challenges, from security concerns to economic hardships, it is heart-warming to witness a demonstration of leadership that transcends regional boundaries and partisan politics, such as shown by Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo’s recent visit to flood-ravaged Borno State. It is indeed a step in compassionate, pan-Nigerian leadership that our nation needs.

It is no longer news, but remains a sad tale, that the devastating floods in Borno, caused by the collapse of the Alau Dam, have affected over a million people and displaced countless families. Private property and public infrastructure worth billions of naira have been destroyed. In the face of such widespread devastation and attendant suffering, President Bola Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, and many other leaders from both public and private sectors have visited and offered succour. Governor Soludo’s decision to also personally visit Maiduguri thus speaks volumes about his humanity and pan-Nigeria disposition.

By crossing state lines to offer solidarity and support, Governor Soludo has demonstrated that true leadership knows no boundaries, region, tribe, religion or partisanship. His actions remind us that we are all Nigerians first, regardless of our state of origin or ethnic background. This gesture of unity is particularly instructive given the structural fault lines and tensions that often polarise different regions of the country.

Besides, Governor Soludo’s approach to the visit was comprehensive and action-oriented. He did not go alone but took with him a delegation of top government officials and representatives from various health and charity organisations. This shows a leader who understands that empathy must be coupled with practical assistance and expertise to truly make a difference.

The governor’s words during the visit were equally impactful. His call for collective support and his emphasis on compassion and assistance reflect a deep understanding of what leadership should be in times of crisis. By stating, "we must come together in support of those affected, offering our compassion, assistance, and our hands and hearts to help rebuild lives and restore hope," Governor Soludo has set a worthy bar for others to follow.

Also, Governor Soludo’s visit to the Shehu of Borno demonstrates his respect for traditional institutions and local customs in Nigeria. This cultural sensitivity is crucial in a diverse nation like Nigeria and shows a leader who understands the importance of building bridges of support across different segments of society.

In all, it is true that times of crisis bring out either the best or the worst attributes in leaders. For Governor Soludo, the Borno crisis has brought out the best in him. His visit reinforced the ideal that when we come together as one nation, putting aside our differences and focusing on our shared humanity, we can overcome any obstacle. It is our hope that other leaders across Nigeria will take note and follow suit, working together to build a stronger, more united country for all Nigerians.
