Anambra State governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, Thursday, congratulated the two former governors of the State, Chief Dr Willie Obiano and Senator Chris Ngige, on their birthdays.

Soludo, in a statement signed by his Press Secretary, Mr Christian Aburime, described his predecessor, Obiano, who clocked 69th year, as a visionary leader whose initiatives and policies significantly contributed to the growth and development of Anambra State

According to him, Obiano fondly known as Akpokudike, was a distinguished banker and politician whose exemplary leadership and passion for the progress of Anambra State.

"Governor Soludo is happy to celebrate Chief Obiano’s life and his enduring impact on Anambra State, wishing him continued sound health, happiness, and fulfilment on this auspicious occasion of his 69th birthday anniversary," he stated.

The governor also lauded Senator Ngige as a distinguished leader whose contributions to the development and progress of Anambra State remain indelible.

He recalled Senator Ngige's tenure as an era characterised by significant infrastructural development, particularly in road construction and urban renewal in the state, adding that through his commitment and dedication to public service.

The governor said, "He continued to be exemplary in his subsequent roles as a distinguished Senator and former Minister of Labour and Employment in the Federal Republic of Nigeria. As Dr Chris Ngige celebrates another year, Governor Soludo joins his family, friends, and well-wishers in thanking God for his life and praying for his continued good health and wisdom in the service of the nation and Anambra state."

When the Dangote refinery controversy blew up, naturally as someone wired to support anyone l perceive to be oppressed, this time, Dangote, l lined up in support of the richest man in Africa.

I perceived he was being unduly treated by the Downstream and Midstream regulators, the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA). For days, l had heated arguments with people with opposing views on this matter. However, Ademola Adigun, one person l respect on this app, cautioned that people should not be too emotive on this matter but seek knowledge. I took that as a challenge.

Subsequently, in an attempt not to look foolish out of emotive consideration, l opened my mind to critically study the issues involved and even the nitty gritty technical details of the oil and gas system. And because l owe an obligation to educate people, l had to open up myself to information, researching on this issue and the petroleum sector, devoid of emotion.

While several groups of people, including one of my constituencies -the Civil society, have made pilgrimages to the humongous site of the Dangote refinery, unarguably, the largest private refinery in World, l decided, what in my opinion, was sifting facts from emotion. The issue has even reverberated in the hallowed Chambers of the House of Representatives, where the adhoc committee set up to investigate the issue, among other issues in the upstream and midstream petroleum section, was dissolved yesterday.

In a report today by Daily Nigeria, the Speaker, Abbas Tajuddeen, dissolved the committee over alleged compromise by some members of the committee who had exculpated the richest man in Africa, even before the assignment kicked off.

From my findings, there are three major critical issues that are affecting the operations of Dangote Refinery

It does appear that when Dangote was building the refinery, there were no proper arrangements on ground on how he will get feedstock for the refinery. His refinery is the largest single train refinery in the world.
Nobody builds and opens a refinery of this magnitude without refinery agreement to get feed stock. Dangote didn’t have a feedstock agreement for his refinery.

I have read where some people claimed that he has an agreement with NNPC Ltd but that arrangements was not a feed stock agreement. What happened with the NNPC arrangement was that during the project building phase, Dangote Refinery project got stuck and NNPC Ltd got the approval of the President to take equity.

Subsequently, the NNPC got a loan and paid $1bn as part of the 20 per cent equity while the rest was to be paid in crude supply.

The lack of feedstock was part of Dangote’s problem and he is now sourcing feedstock when the refinery is powered. So far, NNPC Ltd has given him 39 cargoes.

Dangote’s claim that IOCs are selling crude oil to him at $6 per barrel above international price doesn’t seem to be true. What l discovered is that Crude oil has different grades. What he got from the US is WTI and the price is not the same as others.
Another key issue under pricing is that the margin of sale of crude oil is different because it is an international business. There is what is called market margin and it is usually from $1.5 to up to $20 per barrel.

There are several crude grades and Dangote Refinery uses different grades of crude to blend. So, when Dangote said he is importing from the United States, it is because he needs it as part of the grades to be used to blend in his refinery to produce petroleum products. His refinery needs several percentage of Bonny light, WTI and others to be able to blend very well. But he is using the fact that he imports from US to give the impression that he is importing from US and other countries, when in actual fact, is that he is sourcing different crude grades to blend.

Another critical point of under pricing is that the marketers buy this crude grades and add their own margin which ranges from $1.5 to $20 but the Nigerian government is giving it to Dangote at a margin of $0.5 per barrel which to me seems to me to be a good deal for him.

One other contentious issue is that Dangote is also persuading the regulator, to persuade the International Oil Companies to give him crude but the IOCs cannot do that because they have Production Sharing Contract (PSC) with the Nigerian government. Through the PSC, the IOCs produce, give Nigeria government its share and take the share of their crude and sell to marketers. Dangote didn’t enter any agreement with the IOCs to give him feedstock. What people must also know is that these IOCs borrow money from banks, invest in equipments, drill the oil fields, give government its share and take theirs, sell, recover their costs and make further investments.

Also, Dangote wants to use the local refinery obligation to obfuscate issues but this is not working for him because the local refinery obligation, according to the PIA, is based on a willing buyer and willing seller arrangement. This means the product must be available, and the parties must agree on the price in line with Section 109 of the PIA, which deals with the National Crude Oil Requirement of Refineries. The section states that the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission shall base the allocation of the domestic crude oil supply obligation applicable to the respective lessees on the National Crude Oil Demand requirement supply curve, which is the supply curve of crude oil or condensate that can be supplied on a voluntary basis at the prevailing international market price.

On the controversial issue of licensing of Dangote Refinery, while it has the license to build the plant, the refinery does not have license that covers other parts of its operations.

For monopoly, Dangote is asking the regulator to direct all oil marketers to get petroleum products from his refinery. But the question to ask is: Can Dangote guarantee Nigeria three billion liters of petroleum products per day in strategic national reserves for 32 days and not sell it? As a business entity, for Dangote to keep these products in strategic national reserves without selling them will lead to huge losses for him.

For the regulator to give Dangote that monopoly that he asking means that the business of other oil marketers would be killed and this is against the policy of deregulation because marketers should be allowed to import so there can be healthy competition.

Another critical point to note is that Dangote Refinery operates in a free trade zone and he will be exempted from paying tax to government. This is a loss of revenue to the government. The petroleum products from the refinery would be sold in foreign currency instead of naira to Nigerians as oil marketers who want to buy from there will fill form M (Importers form) in the bank.

Another contentious issue is the sulphur content in the petroleum products. It was reported in the media that the NMDPRA has minimum of 11 staff members in Dangote Refinery and all other local Refineries. The test of the petroleum products from the refinery are done daily and sent to the regulator. This means the regulator knows what they are saying when they stated that the product is inferior.

One worrisome aspect of the whole arrangement is that Dangote will need a minimum of $1.8bn working capital to operate the refinery and no bank would be willing to give it to him because he appears to be at a financial tight corner.

This was further confirmed with yesterday’s International Fitch ratings which downgraded the Dangote industries Limited, reflecting the precarious liquidity position of the business conglomerate.

The report stated inter alia that the group’s liquidity position, “followed lower than expected disposal proceeds, operational and financial underperformance compared to our prior expectations, also affected by local currency devaluation, and lack of contracted backup funding to repay its significant debt facilities maturing on 31 August 2024….We view the lack of DIL’s audited accounts for 2023 as a corporate governance issue. The RWN reflects uncertainty related to the group’s ability to refinance maturing debt.

“Lack of tangible steps to refinance or repay the maturing debt would lead to further downgrade while we do not expect a positive rating action until the company’s liquidity position improves substantially.”

I love Dangote and his can-do spirit, the reason l initially was emotive when this controversy broke when l felt he was being unduly treated but my study of the whole scenario has changed my perspective. I want him to succeed but he too has to do the needful. The monopolistic mindset which he carried from his cement business cannot work in the deregulated petroleum sector. More importantly, he needs a pragmatic approach to solve his liquidity challenges in this petroleum sector, which, with the benefit of hindsight, he underestimated, based on the seeming hand-in-gloves relationship he had with the previous leadership of the CBN, where it appeared he had “easy” access to funds.

Soji Adekunmbi, an Abuja based public policy analyst, in an article in The Cable, proffered solutions to Dangote to enable him navigate the humongous financial quagmire he seems to have found himself, when he posited: “A few options are available to Dangote but the most viable of them is that he should consider divesting some of his shares in the refinery. It may seem a difficult option but it is the best for him given the circumstances.

There are business entities who took a similar path when confronted with some of the challenges seemingly facing Dangote. In Saudi Arabia, the Saudi government sold Aramco, the national oil company to the public when it faced difficulties.

Even Microsoft founder, Bill Gates sold off a majority of his stake in the company retaining a mere five percent interest in the business. Gates took that route after facing anti-trade court cases following Microsoft’s monopolistic nature, which had caused the collapse of several IT companies.

Dangote should do the needful by selling shares to Nigerians as it is obvious given the intricate nature of business in the oil and gas sector particularly the huge capital outlay required to keep a business going, he cannot pull it off alone.”

Members are Mrs. Bernadine Obande, Barr. Osita Cyril Igbokwe, Sir Chinedu Anthony Nnalue, Mrs. Helen Ifeyinwa Umeh and Mr. John Emeka Okeke.

The inauguration, which took place at the Governor's Lodge, Amawbia, is coming after over one decade since the last local government election was conducted in the state.

Terms of reference of the members include organizing, undertaking, and supervising all elections and matters pertaining to elections to the elective offices in the local government councils in the state, render such advice as
it may consider necessary to the Independent National Electoral Commission on the compilation of the register of voters In so far as that register is applicable to the Local Government of the State, prescribe guidelines to political parties, stipulating the rules and procedure for the conduct of Local Government elections in the State, conduct voter and civic education.

Others are to promote knowledge of sound democratic election processes, conduct any referendum or plebiscite required to be conducted pursuant to the provisions of the 1999 Constitution(as amended) or any law of the State, prepare and submit its budget directly to the House of Assembly, liaise directly with the Commissioner of Police, Director, State Security Service, and other relevant security bodies that may facilitate violence-free and fair elections; consult regularly with all registered political parties in the State and ensure free flow of information about the Commission, appoint a lawyer to defend the Commission and prosecute anyone who violates the provisions of the law, assign poll clerks and orderlies in respect of each polling station or unit to assist at the poll and perform such other functions as may be conferred on it by Law.

The functions of the Commission under paragraph (a) of subsection (1) of this section shall include the division of the area of the Local Government, into such number of ward or constituencies as are prescribed by law for the purpose of the elections to be conducted by the Commission.

In the exercise of its function under paragraph (a) of sub-section (1) and under sub-section (2) of this section, the Commission shall use the Voters Registers compiled by the Independent National Electoral Commission of Nigeria.

Inaugurating the members of the Commission, Governor Soludo stressed that they have been called to perform an onerous task, especially as it concerns the conduct of local government election in the state.

While stating that the law clearly spelt out their wide range of functions, the governor asked them to expedite action and set a date for the conduct of local government election for ndị Anambra.

He charged them on rendering sterling service with honour and integrity, recalled that the conduct of a local government election was a major promise he made to ndị Anambra when he was inaugurated and emphasized that crafting the law and getting the institution up and running, took some time

"The rest of the job is in your hands. People of Anambra are expecting you to hit the ground running.

"When you are done, announce to the people when you'll hold elections. I've done my job.

"Ndị Anambra, here comes your ANSIEC Commissioners", the Governor added.

He expressed optimism that with their credentials, it is expected that the Commission would render first-rate action.

On her part, the ANSIEC Chairman, Magistrate Osakwe, expressed happiness for being given the opportunity to serve.

"This is a big task. We will wade through the storm.

"Ndị Anambra will be grateful after our work. We will render this service diligently and transparently.

"This is a formidable team. We'll do our work and do it well, "she emphasized.

The Governor of Anambra State, Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR, has conveyed his warm felicitations to the Anglican Bishop of Awka and Archbishop of Niger Province, the Most Reverend Alexander Chibuzo Ibezim, PhD, on his 62nd birthday celebration.

In his goodwill message, Governor Soludo described Archbishop Ibezim as a most distinguished, caring, spiritually vibrant, well-educated and widely travelled cleric and humanitarian who is worth celebrating for his life of impeccable service to God and humanity.

The Governor also recalled that Archbishop Ibezim, having been ordained an Anglican priest since 1994, has over the years served diligently in different dioceses, touching many lives and making numerous positive contributions to the advancement of the Church and society at large.

Accordingly, the revered cleric has been duly honoured within and outside the Church, such as receiving the Paul Harris Fellowship Award by the Rotary Club of Awka in 2013, the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Anambra State Government in 2017, and the Grand Commander Medal Award in 2022.

Thus, Governor Soludo joins the family of Archbishop Ibezim, the Anglican Communion in Awka and beyond, friends and other well-wishers in wishing him a happy birthday celebration and many more years of a fruitful and impactful life in God's service.

We do not live to eat, but we need to eat to live. Thus, food security is a fundamental aspect of societal well-being, encompassing the availability, access, and utilisation of nutritious food for everyone. Also, it is not just about preventing hunger; it is about fostering dignity, justice, and prosperity within communities that make up a state and a nation.

As the celebrity Spanish and American chef, restaurateur, and humanitarian José Andrés, founder of World Central Kitchen, also aptly stated, “Food is national security. Food is the economy. It is employment, energy, and history. Food is everything”. This highlights the multifaceted role that food plays in shaping our societies and economies.

Naturally, therefore, addressing food insecurity is a moral imperative in any society. The need for immediate action to alleviate hunger and ensure that every individual has access to sufficient food is sacrosanct. Yet, it calls for the wisdom of collective action as echoed in the words of Irish singer-songwriter and activist Bono, who stated, “If you want to eliminate hunger, everybody has to be involved”.

The foregoing proposition, advocating that solutions to hunger and economic hardship require the collaboration of all sectors of society, from government and businesses to individuals and communities, is why the Governor of Anambra State, Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR, has lately launched “Farm to Feed Campaign”. Coming at a time of nationwide hunger protests against economic hardship sweeping across Nigeria, Governor Soludo’s initiative offers a promising path forward, underscoring the power of agriculture as a sustainable solution to hunger, both in the short and long term.

While many regions in Nigeria have seen citizens take to the streets in protest against food inflation and economic challenges, Anambra State is taking a different approach. Governor Soludo’s campaign is a call to reasonable action, urging Ndi Anambra to be part of the solution rather than merely lamenting the problem. This proactive stance embodies the resilient spirit of the Igbo people at large and offers valuable lessons for the rest of the country.

The “Farm to Feed Campaign”, if faithfully embraced by Anambra people and others, promises several immediate benefits. By encouraging citizens to utilise every available piece of land for farming, the initiative aims to increase food supply within months, potentially easing the pressure on food prices. As more people engage in micro-farming, be it in their domestic backyards or other available spaces in rural and urban centres, it creates opportunities for additional income generation, helping to alleviate economic hardship at the individual level. This is not to talk of skill development through which the initiative provides an opportunity for citizens to acquire or enhance farming skills, which can be valuable long-term assets.

Beyond short-term gains, Governor Soludo’s “Farm to Feed Campaign” is also laying the groundwork for lasting change. By promoting widespread engagement in agriculture, Anambra State is working towards long-term food security, reducing dependence on imports and buffering against future food inflation crises.

Economic diversification is another long-term benefit. The focus on agriculture can contribute to diversifying the state’s economy, creating a more resilient economic structure less vulnerable to shocks in any single sector. Besides, Governor Soludo’s call to make farming and agriculture “the new national pride” could spark a cultural transformation, elevating the status of agriculture in society as a trendy occupation like ICT, acting and others.

There is also the advantage of environmental sustainability with the initiative, which includes the distribution of palm and coconut seedlings being done by the Soludo administration long before now. The “Farm to Feed Campaign” has a great potential for promoting sustainable agricultural practices that can have long-term positive environmental impacts. By encouraging youth participation in agriculture, the campaign goes further to address unemployment issues while ensuring the continuity of farming knowledge and practices.

So, as Nigeria contends with severe economic challenges and food inflation, Governor Soludo has swung into action with a practical solution. The “Farm to Feed Campaign” offers a bright ray of hope and pragmatism. Governor of Anambra State, Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR has launched the "Farm To Feed Campaign" initiative.

The programme which aims to encourage and mobilize ndị Anambra to venture into farming and a flagged off by the Governor at a farm in Amansea, Awka North local government area.

Performing the function, Governor Soludo revealed that the initiative is one of the positive steps to move the state and country forward.

"We are here as part of our own response to the issues surrounding hunger.

"While others in some places are protesting, Anambra state is not protesting.

"I want to thank our youths and everyone who are going about their businesses.

"We are here to take positive steps to move the state and country forward.

"Our people are not participating in the protest, not because they don't feel the pain, but because they want to be part of the solution.

"The youths want to embrace their destinies and I want to commend you for that", he added.

"This is citizens' action against hunger in partnership with government. We want to turn our challenges into opportunities.

The Governor recalled that his administration has already distributed over one million palm and coconut seedlings, with a target of ten million seedlings before the end of his government.

"The farm to feed campaign is a simple partnership deal to end hunger within the next 12 months.

"The citizens have a lot to do, including public servants. The only job allowed by the constitution for public servants is farming.

The Governor recalled that 40 years ago, the late Sunny Okosun sang a song titled; "Which way Nigeria", where he noted that Nigerians have been singing songs of lamentations for decades, stressing that it is now time for action.

"In that song, Sunny Okosun sang that every little thing that goes wrong, people blame the government".

"Let's turn farming and agriculture as the new national pride.

"I agree there is hunger in the land...do something about it.

"If everyone starts producing, the pressure on food prices will reduce. Turn every vacant piece of land to farm, rent a space if you can, but plant something.

"Here in Anambra, we will continue to do more.

He expressed readiness to collaborate with organisations and work out schemes, saying that soon, his administration will celebrate the farm champions.

"Local government chairmen, churches, and other stakeholders should take the campaign down to their people.

"Ndị Igbo aren't protesting because they believe in hard work.

"We've seen far worse conditions before, but we are resilient people, and by a dint of hard work, we shall prevail.

"Let us get to work, every citizen, one at a time, protest, but be the change you desire," the governor added.

The Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr. Forster Ihejiofor expressed elation at the event and the Governor's zeal of thinking through the challenges of the times, that is in line with the solution agenda.

"His mind is at work. This is a progressive idea for ndị Anambra and the nation that will bring comfort to the hardship, "he added.

Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Solo Chukwulobelu, Head of Service, Barrister Theodora Igwegbe, Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, among others, told stories of how their farm efforts were successful.

The leader of Labour Party (LP) caucus in the National Assembly and member representing Ogbaru Federal Constituency, Hon. Afam Victor Ogene has urged journalists to report critical issues affecting Southeast region with a view to promote accountability and economic sustainability.

Ogene disclosed this at Awka, Anambra State capital, while presenting a paper entitled defining A New Economic And Societal Order: The Role Of The Media at 2024 Summit of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, South East Zone.

According to him, thks became pertinent because practice of democratic culture remains alarmingly low among the electorate in the South East due to leadership recruitment for political offices were often heavily influenced by monetary considerations.

According to the Chairman, House Committee on Renewable Energy, to address this, the media must intensify its efforts to sensitize the public, emphasizing the importance of electing candidates with the capacity to deliver good governance for the greater good.

" This shift in focus is crucial to counter the prevalent practice of voters prioritizing personal gains over collective benefits during elections, especially as Anambra election draws near. Furthermore, the media has not adequately reported on critical issues affecting the region, including the scarcity of essential infrastructure, such as roads, particularly in rural areas.

"Others are insecurity, inadequate health facilities, insufficient public school structures, inadequate teacher training and skills. By highlighting these issues, the media can raise awareness and promote accountability, ultimately contributing to the region's development and progress.

" The media should also educate our people on the importance of South East Development Commission Act newly signed into law. I urge the media to play a crucial role in projecting the commission's work. This regional intervention agency aims to develop the entire zone. The media must ensure that the agency remains accountable and adheres to its mandate once established, ultimately benefiting the people," he noted.

In a keynote address, the President/Chairman, Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), Dr Ike Neliaku, urged South-East to imbibe a deliberate heart for love and forgiveness for smooth collaboration towards uplifting the zone in all spheres of lives.

He averred that "My experience in public service in the last 35 years shows that it is the man of love, with a profound heart of forgiveness, that lasts longer in the race and ultimately, carries the day in the long run. We must not dwell on the past, nor yield our hearts to our hurts, to infinity!

"May I reiterate with certainty that while the current situation may seem challenging, it is not insurmountable. With the right mindset, policies, partnerships, respect, love, and collective effort, the South East can reclaim its position as a leading economic zone in Nigeria.

"The key lies in recognising our challenges, harnessing our strengths, and creating an enabling environment that attracts and retains investments. By building a strong foundation of faith, strategic support, exemplary leadership, and effective storytelling, we can transform our region into a beacon of progress and prosperity, leading to sustainable development, the essence of our gathering here today."

Other speakers at the occasion, including Governor Chukwuma Soludo represented by the Chief of Staff, Mr Ernest Ezeajughi, the Deputy Chief of Staff and Chief Protocol to the Governor, Mr Chinedu Nwoye-Glamour, who represented the zonal Chairman of Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN), Lady Ada Chukwudozie, acknowledged the roles of media in promoting socioeconomic development of the country and urged them to sustain the tempo.

Earlier, the Vice President, NUJ, Southeast zone, Comrade Emmanuel Ifesinachi, observed that the programme which brought in media stakeholders and leaders of the union across the five Southeastern states, was aimed among other things to provide economic blueprint for advancing the zone.


The National President, Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Comrade Chris Isiguzo represented by the National Secretary, Comrade Achike Chude, commended the zone for putting up such events which he believed were germane and timely to enhancing the development of both the region and Nigeria generally.

Director, Special Anambra Anti-Touting Squad (SASA), Hon. Solomon Chukwuebuka Onwuemene, Wednesday, said that governor Chukwuma Soludo was willing to rehabilitate, reintegrate and employ those who have genuinely quitted touting and other forms of crimes.

Onwuemene, who disclosed this in an interview in his office at Awka, Anambra State capital, explained that the State governor had never discriminated against people in terms of employment and empowerment especially in one-youth-2 skills empowerment programmes.

According to him, the agency was poised to wipe away touting, including one chance syndicate, kidnapping, pickpocketing, illegal revenue collections, among other forms of crimes with a view to creating enabling environment for businesses to thrive, liveable and prosperous State.

The agency, according to him, previously focused at some flash points such as focused as Onitsha, Nnewi, Ihiala and their environs due to high impact of activities of touts in the area but had consistently increased their tentacles to other parts of Anambra State in accordance with manpower.

"We want the citizens to assist us with positive information that can help us into identifying touts and rehabilitate or prosecute them accordingly. If you cover them today, you may become their victims tomorrow. So it is better you expose them to be free and free our society from crimes.

"Luckily, Mr governor has empowered us to rehabilitate them, reintegrate them back to society or help them get good jobs. We have done this and still doing it. We have also ensured that to be prosecuted have been prosecuted as well.

"The law backing us also empowered us to arrest and prosecute illegal gathering of unrecognised people. If you have land issues with anyone, kindly take the person to court instead of threatening or using touts to unleash mayhem on them. and gather people to fight or your," he stated.

It was awards presentation galore at Old Saints Parish, Awgbu, in Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State as the Catholic Bishop of Awka Diocese, His Lordship Most Reverend Paulinus Ezeokafor presented different awards, Certificates of Recognitions and 50KG bag of rice each to the 30 persons who interacted closely with him when he was the Parish Priest of the Old All Saints Parish, Awgbu.





These recipients and beneficiaries were honoured during the Civil reception of the Bishop Ezeokafor shortly after the Concelebrated Eucharistic Celebration.





It was the major highlight of the reception. Among those who received the awards were; the 27 candidates of the first group baptized by the then Fr. Paulinus Ezeokafor, first couple Fr. Paulinus Ezeokafor officiated their wedding, the oldest man and woman who held the faith from then till now.











Appreciating them, Bishop Ezeokafor expressed gratitude to God for gift of life and for sustaining the awardees till date, even as he thanked them for keeping and living the faith.





It would be recalled that All Saints Parish, Awgbu, was Bishop Ezeokafor’s first place of primary assignment shortly after his ordination 30th June, 1984 and that the major event (40th Anniversary) will take place around November 16 this year.





Delivering a homily during a concelebrated Pontifical Holy Mass, Bishop Ezeokafor remembered with nostalgia, how he toiled and created bush paths in the then Old All Saints Parish, Awgbu, noting that the experiences he garnered serving as a Vicar and later as a Parish Priest, shaped his life’s journey.





He said that he would not forget Awgbu Community in a hurry, adding that he worked hard trying to create an indelible impact in the area. The Old All saints Parish, Awgbu was made of 8 Parishes namely; All Saint, Awgbu, St. Patrick’s Awgbu, St. Mary’s Awgbu, St. Theresa’s Awgbu, St. Joseph’s Awgbu, St. Pius X, Okpeze, St. Paul Station, Amaetiti and St. Peter’s Station, Aronota.





The charismatic and influential Prelate harped on serving God in truth and in the spirit, saying that no matter what one thought of oneself, one should spare a thought for God and humanity, pointing out that without the presence of God in one’s life, the person would surely end up unfulfilled man.





The Local Ordinary thanked the people of Awgbu for the warm reception and recognition, describing them as hospitable and loving individuals, urging them to continue to promote, defend and support the Church in her bid to make the earth a better living place, as well as gaining more souls for God. He urged all to take the heavenly race seriously.





‘I am highly elated seeing myself here once again, hale and hearty. I am happy that I’m here where it all started. When I came, I was around the 70th person ordained a priest and just recently, before the creation of Ekwuluobia Diocese, we were about over 600 ordained Catholic priests. What that shows is that the future is so bright and promising,’ bishop Ezeokafor stated.





In an interview, the Chief of Staff to the Governor of Anambra State, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, Mr Ernest Ezeajughi, described Bishop Ezeokafor as a humble, selfless, diligent, compassionate and sincere priest of God, emphasizing that the work of the cleric in All Saints Catholic, Awgbu cannot be overstated. He said that he was of a very tender age when the Bishop came to serve in his community.





‘I can remember vividly, how and when the Bishop arrived All Saints Catholic Church, Awgbu. I was very little then. I was baptized in the parish and did many things here before leaving the community. He is simply a true man of God. He is loved by virtually by all Awgbu indigenes. His humility should be studied.





I marvel at his kind disposition and tranquil nature. I am happy he is here today, to begin the Celebration of his 40th Priestly Anniversary. I congratulate him. 40 years as a priest is not a mean feat. It is a great achievement worthy of celebration. He has come a long way and deserves to be celebrated,’ Ezeajughi declared.





Appreciating all those who came to felicitate Bishop Ezeokafor, the Dean of Awgbu deanery Reverend Father Jonas Unegbu, said the story of the Bishop’s life as a priest could not be told in a hurry, noting that his work as a shepherd of God’s sheep were in all the places he served; even as he described him as a pathfinder and a go-getter.





Fr Unegbu said he had confirmed all that he was told about the impact made by Bishop Ezeokafor as a Vicar and later as a Parish Priest. In the same vein, the current Parish Priest of all Saints Awgbu, Rev. Fr. Hyacnth Okafor eloquently thanked the Bishop for his highly inspiring visit to the Parish even as he remarked that it was thanks to him that the Parish is fluorishing in Faith and zeal.





After the Mass, came the Civil reception of the Bishop. the major highlight of the reception was the presentation of awards to about 30 persons who interacted closely with them Rev. Fr. Paulinus Chukwuemeka Ezeokafor when he was working at the Old All Saints Parish, Awgbu as Parish Priest.

Electricity Workers shutdown EEDC facilities all over South East over alleged Intimidation

The protesting electricity workers under the aegis of National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE), Tuesday, shutdown offices of Enugu Electricity Distribution Company, EEDC, across the five South-East States over they described as Intimidation of Workers by the management.

The workers protested, who claimed that the EEDC Management’s persistent violation of conditions of Service, insensitivity to workers welfare as well as
humiliation of workers were among the reasons behind the shutdown, demanded for release of all workers in detention immediately.

In a protest letter entitled "Re: Stop the harassment and Intimidation of Workers in EEDC now", signed by Comrade Agyake Anthony, the Snr. Asst. General Secretary (East), the workers listed seven points demand to be met by the management of EEDC before the protests would be stopped.

"We bemoan and condemn, in strongest terms your Management’s persistent gross violation of the Conditions of Service and insensitivity to Workers’ welfare in the Company.

"You will recall that the Union via our memo ref: NUEE/SAGS(EZS)/028/2024 dated 22nd July, 2024, had demanded the stoppage of the harassment, intimidation and indiscriminate arrest/detention of Workers of the Company using men of the Nigeria Police Force (Anti-Robbery Unit); which is in violation of the Conditions of Service, due process and extant Labour laws.

"You have continued to connive with this Unit, supposedly established to handle cases of armed robbery; to arrest and incarcerate Workers in the Company without recourse to internal mechanisms established within the Organization to address workplace issues.

"It is highly regrettable that your Management has continued to abuse and undermine the harmonious industrial relationship with the Union, despite several shortcomings of Management.
Your Management has continued to delay/pay Staff salaries in arrears, despite agreement with the Union during our Consultative meetings to ensure prompt payment of staff salaries. Unfortunately, this and several other labour issues have not been addressed till date.

The protest letter added: "Consequently, we demand as follows:
"The immediate release of all workers in Police detention, comply with internally established processes (due process) of addressing staff issues, stoppage of further arrest of workers and immediate compensation to the affected workers.

"Immediate release of letters of promotion to workers of the Company who are demotivated and have not been promoted for over ten(10) years.

"Immediate approval of the reviewed Conditions of Service and invitation for signing.

"Immediate reinstatement of Staff Medicare scheme which your Managemt stopped for months to the detriment of Workers.

"Immediate payment of the balance of arrears of year 2022 Leave allowance and commencement of year 2024 Leave allowance.

"Settlement of exit package of all exited staff of the Company.

"Redeployment of the Head, Taskforce Department- Mrs. Chinenye Okafor; who has shown herself bigger than the rules/regulations governing the Company’s operations and workplace engagement in the Country.

The union had earlier written management through the Managing Director, EEDC, Enugu that the ongoing industrial action which commenced in Anambra as a result of Management’s indifference to the issues and concerns raised, will be escalated to all States under the Company’s coverage from today, 3oth July, 2024 and will be sustained until all issues highlighted above are conclusively addressed.

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Anambra State Council has mourned the death of late Senator representing Anambra South, Ifeanyi Ubah, describing it as untimely death of an outstanding philanthropist.

The council in a statement signed by the State Chairman, Dr Odogwu Emeka Odogwu and the Secretary, Comrade Aloysius Ofodile, regretted that a man who had offered himself to govern Anambra State could just die when he was needed most.

NUJ, therefore, offered condolences to the wife, Barr. Uche Ubah and entire family of the sage, including President Bola Tinubu, Senate President Goodwill Akpabio, entire National Assembly and governor Chukwuma Soludo, urging everyone to give glory to God despite the unforseen circumstances because Ubah left an indelible mark in life.

The statement read in full thus;
"NUJ Anambra State condoles with Mr President, Federal Republic of Nigeria, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio and the entire National Assembly, the Governor of Anambra State, Prof. Charles Chukwuma Soludo, CFR, his constituents and his local Government area, for this irreparable loss."

"The passing of Senator Ubah, who reportedly died in the United Kingdom during a walkout with his son aroused sorrowful emotions and grief as nobody expected given that he was full of life few days ago. Not only that, it is regrettable considering his personality and the office he is currently holding as the Senator, representing Anambra South District. Worst still, this is a man, who has just offered himself to run for the 2025 gubernatorial election under the Umbrella of the All Progressive Congress (APC)."

"However, from the different testimonials, Senator Ubah was an outstanding philanthropist who left indelible footprints on the sands of time in all ramifications, such as charity, selfless services, and benefactor to many. As we commiserate with the wife, Barr Mrs Uche Ubah, and children, the family, the Senatorial District, Anambra State and the Federal Republic of Nigeria, we enjoin all of us to glorify the Almighty God for the wonderful life he lived and good legacies he left behind."

"NUJ as a Union and journalists working in different media houses across the world benefited from Dr Ubah's philanthropy in one way or the other. NUJ shares with all concerned in this moment of grief and we pray that the Almighty God will grant the immediate family and all of us the fortitude, and strength to bear irreparable loss. Of course there is no doubt that the good work performed by the most distinguished Senator on earth before his demise will speak volume for him."

The Rotary Club of Awka Smith-Town, Rotary District 9142, on Sunday, said it was targeting a total of ₦8,650,000 to champion the cause of child and maternal health care, peace and conflict resolution, among others in 2024/2025 rotary year.

The Chapter President, Rotarian Ali Alex Arinze, who disclosed this in Awka, Anambra State capital, after his installation as 9th President of the Club, averred that his club was also poised at improving rural water supply, sanitation and hygiene, at communities and schools.

According to Ali, those to benefit from the 9 projects of the rotary club for the year would be selected at the end of their
need assessments and largely based on the resources they were able to gather from credible persons and philanthropists.

"The Rotary International charged us to do magic in the world which entails affecting our community and society positively through 9 major projects. It will take us ₦8,650,000 to be realised in this rotary year. We want to construct bus stands, organise spelling B competitions, offset hospital bills for the sick, provide pipe borne water for rural water development, among others," he stated.

He sought financial and professional support from credible but well-to-do individuals, philanthropists and corporate entities in order to realise the projects, which according to him, would change the lives of many in the State and beyond.

Earlier, the Club President for 2023/2024, Rotarian Valentine Okaudo, while transferring the mantle of leadership to Ali, charged him to lead with care and love knowing that it was a voluntary work that requires teamwork, time management and collaborations to succeed.

Some of the highlights of the event were welcoming of the new president and his entourage, including the Knight of Saint John International (KSJ), into the arena amidst cheers from members, friends and well wishers; presentations of awards to some deserving personalities as well as induction of three persons (members) into the club.

Speaking in separate interviews, some of the awardees, HRH Igwe Clifford Okeke of Nawfija, Ọrumba South LGA, and a business tycoon, Prince Ekene Rowland Okafor commended the Rotary club for the recognition, noting that it would inspire them to impact more lives wherever they found themselves.

Also speaking, a concerned citizen and guest who accompanied Igwe Okeke to the event, Prince Offorbike Okoye, praised the Rotary club on smooth leadership transition and contributions to rural development, and urged other Nigerians to adapt them for better society.

South-East Youth Vanguard for Good Governance (SEYVGO), a coalition of civil society group, has urged President Bola Tinubu to investigate the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) with a view to prosecute alleged corrupt people in the sector.

According to SEYVGO, the President also needs to sack the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), Mr Farouk Ahmed, over alleged grand and administrative corruption, which they claimed had imposed hardship on people.

The National Coordinator, SEYVGO, Comrade Chuks Obele Favour, while addressing a press conference held at Godwin Ezeemo International Press Centre, Awka, Anambra State, alleged that corruption in the petroleum regulatory authority was behind the fuel scarcity, including severe hardships on ordinary citizens, exacerbating already high cost of living.

Chuks, flanked by 7 other members of the coalition, added that "This crisis has raised serious questions about the transparency in the management of the local oil production by the midstream and downstream petroleum regulation authority which has led to a significant increase in the cost of transportation, affecting livelihoods of Nigerians, particularly those in low-income brackets."

Others at the conference were the National Secretary of the coalition, Comrade Aligwekwe Udochukwu; Comrade Chukwuemeka Desmond, National Coordinator, Greater Anambra Initiative; Comrade Godwin Otu, executive member; Comrade Ihegbu Chibuzor, stakeholder; Comrade Okoroji Uzodimma; Chinwendu Okehie, member; and Chiamaka Okafor, Founder, Stand Up for Whom You are organisation.

“Households, small and medium enterprises alike are also facing higher running costs as a result of grand corruption allegedly perpetrated by the midstream and downstream sector, making it increasingly difficult for ordinary citizens to meet their basic needs.

“It is unacceptable that the so-called largest oil producer and exporter on the continent has continued to grapple with fuel scarcity due to a combination of factors, including inadequate refinery capacity, continuous pipeline vandalism, inadequate infrastructure, grand and administrative corruption.

“These challenges have persisted for decades, and one expects that the removal of fuel subsidy by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration will address the perennial crisis. The open sabotage of local oil production in Nigeria by Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulation Authority Mr. Farouk Ahmed must not go unpunished."

The youth also restated that "dealing with the malaise of corruption in the oil and gas sector may appear complex and intractable when the management lacks transparency and accountability in managing the affairs of all oil business activities in Nigeria (from seismic survey, development, production, transportation, refining, marketing, etc).

"No wonder, recent revelation shows that there is an abuse of administrative office to extract illegal benefits in exchange for approval covering a wide range of commercial and operational activities. It is therefore suggested that Mr. Farouk Ahmed and all culprits in any form in the midstream and downstream petroleum regulation authority should immediately be investigated, dismissed and if found guilty imprisoned as this will serve as deterrent to others and the issue of “Plea Bargain” should not be allowed or permitted in any form."

The Catholic Women Organisation (CWO) of St. Thomas Aquinas Parish, Awka, Anambra State, on Saturday, bestowed an award of excellence on the founder and Chief Executive Officer, Centre for Psychic and Healing Administration (CPHA), Awka, Chief Dr Mrs Flora Ilonzo.

The women, who were moved by Ilonzo's kind-heartedness, philanthropy and humanitarian services to society, also acknowledged her contributions in uplifting the church and building the faith.

The Parish priest, Rev. Fr Francis Oranye, while presenting the award on behalf of the CWO at 2024 women's forum award/empowerment themed motherhood: a call to perform our sacred and supreme vocation, urged Ilonzo to sustain the tempo.

Other awardees at the programme were Mrs Chinaeze Obih, Surveyor Chukwuma Obannese and Surveyor Chidiebere Obannese. In a short speech, the President of the CWO, Mrs Ngọzi Nwankwo, explained that they were selected based on their wealth of experience and contributions at both the church and Nigeria society at large.

Speaking after receiving the award, Chief Dr Mrs Flora Ifeanyichukwu Ilonzo, urged women to be committed, fearless, steadfast and resilience while professing their faith in Christ.

Ilonzo, an internationally celebrated humanist and healer, argued that every Christian should always stand by their faith in all circumstances, as well as contribute positively in the works of God so as to win more souls for Christ.

According to her, serving God also required focus, dedication, obedient and alertness in order to ensure that whatever the church needs to propagate the gospel of salvation were provided accordingly.

The CPHA boss, who was crowned the mother of the CWO in 2016, recalled how God used her in securing the present location of St. Thomas Aquinas parish when there was an attempt by some government officials to give it out to another domination and relocate them to a different site.

"On hearing from my brother (name withheld) who was surveyor of a plan to relocate Aquinas to another location while another denomination (name withheld) to occupy, I quickly contacted Bishop A. K. Obiefuna (late Archbishop of Onitsha and then Bishop of Awka Diocese).

" We rallied round the diocese; gathering bricks and sands from all churches in Awka and Okpuno to ensure that these whole place was fenced between Friday night to Sunday night. I provided the light used for the work at night. I also donated 100 bags of comments and bricks used for the perimeter fencing.

" On Monday, the government officials were surprised that the place planned to give out on Monday had been fenced and left us. I later provided the Church with its first generating set, 500 plastic chairs, as well as 6 first wooden desks modelled after those in used at St Patrick's Cathedral (and present day Church).

"I have donated several grottoes to the church here and other places. I have not stopped helping the church and I will never stop coming to church because am a member of this parish and very committed Christian. God has used me to resolve the frictions between man and nature, heal the sick and others, including settling the conflicts between the dreadful odo masquerade and Christians at Ukehe (Enugu State).

"This attracted pope JohnPaul 2 to Nigeria who equally invited me to Rome. I later succeeded in using the money donated for that trip (through assistance of Bishop Obiefuna) in building a school and sponsoring free education at Ukehe. One of the illustrious sons of the community who benefited from that scholarships is Rt. Hon. Eugene Odo (former Speaker, Enugu State House of Assembly). The community also crowned me Olinandu," she recalled.

She, therefore, charged women to continue contributing towards building the church of God, including rendering community service and humanitarian services with the little they have as God will bless them richly.

Earlier in the programme, the Chairman of the occasion, Prof. Charles Nweke, charged women to always seek the grace of God in whatever they do, because according to him, grace was needed to become a good Christian, woman, wife, mother, trainer and to achieve heaven at the last day.

The Governor of Anambra State, Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR, has expressed his profound shock and grief over the sudden demise of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, a vibrant businessman and politician, today in London at the age of 52 years.

In his condolence remark, Governor Soludo lamented that the untimely death of Senator Ubah, Senator representing Anambra South Senatorial zone, came as a sorely regrettable loss to Anambra South and Anambra State as a whole, at this difficult time that Ndigbo and Nigeria just lost another patriot in Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu.

The Governor described Senator Ifeanyi Ubah as a prominent son of Anambra State and an outstanding Nigerian whose impact on the polity and business sphere was quite significant. As the representative of Anambra South Senatorial District at the National Assembly, and the CEO of Capital Oil, his contributions to the development of Anambra State and Nigeria were also quite commendable

Besides, Senator Ubah was a magnanimous philanthropist whose generosity touched countless lives as an employer of labour and a businessman of remarkable vision and acumen

The Governor further remarked that, despite their political differences and contestations, Senator Ubah remained a dear younger brother and friend to him as his selfless passion for the progress of Anambra State would be most missed.

Anambra disability rights commission celebrates 2 PWDs Mandela Washington Fellows

Anambra State Disability Rights Commission (ASDRC), Thursday, celebrated their two distinguished staff/ volunteers, Miss Vivian Ezeonwumelu and Miss Chidimma Ajemba who had benefitted from Mandela Washington Fellowship for young African leaders at United States.

Ezeonwumelu was former President of Anambra State Albinism Association (ASAA), a conglomerate of people living with albinism, and Social media secretary to the Commission Chairman before she proceeded for the fellowship programme in 2022; while Miss Chidimma Ajemba, the Commission's public relation officer (PRO) and the head of Media travelled earlier this year for the programme.

The six-week leadership programme sponsored by the US Government, and merit based, welcomed up to 700 young leaders to the United States in the summer of 2024 for a comprehensive executive-style program designed to build skills and empower Fellows to lead in their respective sectors and communities.

The Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the commission, Barr. Chukwuka Ezewuzie, while celebrating them at media briefing in Awka, the State capital, explained that they were hopeful that experiences gathered at the programme would contribute immensely in uplifting their members and Anambra society generally.

According to him, the commission would also hire experienced information and communication experts and others to coach and train their staff and volunteers on how to apply or benefits from such kind opportunities as they come in.

He also commended all the friends and associates of the commission, especially the Rule of Law, and Anti-corruption program (RoLAC), a program of the European Union implemented by International IDEA for sponsoring accessibility audit research of Ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs) in Anambra state, the result of which he said were currently yielding fruit and bringing solution to accessibility needs of persons with disabilities in the State.

"The Commission is grateful to Dr Lady Pat. Okeke, a member of the Commission and the wife of Chief G.U Okeke who built and donated two classroom and hostel blocks to Central School (Special School for the Deaf) Odakpu Onitsha. For two years in a role, the staff and volunteers of the Commission have benefited from Mandela Washington Fellowship for young African leaders," he noted.

He also disclosed that the commission has at end of their recent quarterly meeting resolved to setup fund and implement other initiatives geared towards uplifting the persons living with disabilities (PWDs) across 326 electoral wards as part of efforts to drive governor Chukwuma Soludo's agenda to provide liveable and prosperous city to all.

According to him, the committee which was as stipulated by Section 16 of the Anambra State Disability Rights Law 2018, would be headed by Bishop Moses Ezedebeago, a member of the Commission, as Chairman.

He listed other initiatives to be implemented by the Commission to include appointment of commission liaison officers (CLOs) in 326 electoral wards, 179 communities, 21 Local government areas, and maintaining regular collaborations with local government chairmen, community leaders, traditional rulers, religious institutions, among others.

"We are determined to pulling persons with disabilities out of poverty using establishment of Access Market Pavilion (AMP); cooperative society for persons with disabilities; credit facilities for entrepreneurs with disabilities; trade fair for merchants and skilled persons with disabilities; and others," he added.

He further commended governor Chukwuma Soludo for employing PWDs in the State civil service, including enrollment of their members in the ongoing one youth two skills scheme, inclusion in distribution of cash crops, among others, assuring that plans were on the way to ensure all public places are accessible as provided by the law.

The Commission, according to Ezewuzie, had at their quarterly meeting, reviewed and revised all activities of the commission implementing the " Solution Vision for persons with Disabilities in Anambra State".

"The Commission will continue, expand, and intensify effort to bring Mr. Governor's Solution Vision to persons with Disabilities in 326 political wards of Anambra State. These activities bring disability services to the grass root as desired by Mr. Governor," he added.

The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Anambra Chapter rising from its congress held on July 25, 2024, considered the ugly development between the association and the Chikelue Iloenyosi, chairman of Anambra State Football Association and resolved as follows:

That it can no longer tolerate the sustained unprovoked attack on individual and collective sensibilities of members of the association by Chikelue Iloenyosi, chairman of Anambra State Football Association

That it is on record that our member notified the congress of an alleged threat to his life by Chikelue Iloenyosi which was referred to the national leadership for advice.

That upon the directive of the National Leadership, the congress resolved and wrote the relevant agencies including Anambra State Government, Police and DSS urging them to investigate the member's claim and guarantee his safety.

That while we were waiting for the outcome of investigation on the petition, four members of the State Executive Committee including a NEC member were invited by the DSS and confronted with a petition written by Chikelue Iloenyosi through his lawyer against them.

Chikelue Iloenyosi's allegations against these members included attempted murder, constant threat to his life, criminal conspiracy, defamation, pressure on him to back down from contesting for chairmanship of Anambra FA in the election conducted in 2020, these are indeed heavy.

That three months after leveling these allegations which he considers life threatening against our members, Chikelue Iloenyosi has neither substantiated nor withdrawn them.

The congress considered it that Chikelue Iloenyosi has not only launched a psychological afront but declared outright war on the Sports Press in Anambra State.

That SWAN, Anambra Chapter therefore places a total ban on coverage of all Anambra FA related activities until further notice.


That any member of SWAN Anambra Chapter holding any position in Anambra State FA whether ad hoc or permanent resign their membership of such committees and within 72 hours or forfeit their membership of the association.

The National Leadership of SWAN is aware of the relationship between the state chapter and the Anambra State FA and have been briefed of this decision.

Representatives of Assembly of Anambra State Indigenes have thrilled the world stage at Munich, Germany during the 2024 Immigrants cultural festival recently.

The cultural festival featured countries from Europe, Asia and Africa, even as Anambra state was the only State that represented Nigeria.

It was a cultural festival organised by the immigrants office i.e the office that coordinates all the foreign countries in the Munich Municipal council.

Speaking on the event, the Chairman Emeritus of Assembly of Anambra State Indigenes in Munich Municipal council Bavaria, Germany, Nze Ebuka Ifeacho better known as Ozomma-Omemma Enugwu-Ukwu na Umunri described culture as unifying and entertaining factor among races.

Nze Ifeacho informed that Anambra indigenes abroad in particular and Ndigbo in general are promoters of Nigeria culture and tradition in solidarity with other tribes in Yoruba and Hausa outside Nigeria while families in Nigeria distort such courtesies at home.

He informed that the cultural festival was organised by the immigrants office, coordinating all the foreign countries in the Munich Municipal council, Bavaria, Germany.

He encouraged Ndigbo to be proud of their culture and tradition anywhere they found themselves across the globe ,even in Nigeria as culture stands a people out.

Breaking: Electricity Workers Protest Against EEDC Management Over Police Intimidation

There is tension at the offices of Enugu Electricity Distribution Company, EEDC, across South-East by Electricity Workers under the aegis National Union of Electricity Employees, NUEE.

There is protest already across Anambra but will be escalated to other South Eastern States from Monday, and then nationwide from Tuesday, next week.

At the Zonal Headquarters Awka, NUEE workers shut the premises and caused traffic along Zik's Avenue, even as they demanded immediate release of their members in detention at the Armed Robbery Unit of the Nigerian Police at Awkuzu as they are not criminals.

The protesters carried placards of which read: Unilateral stoppage of staff Medical , No promotion for Twn years, Late payment of salary among others, even though they said the protest was about intimidation of their members by EEDC using Police.

The union called for application of internal process of dealing with infraction issues as provided in the Conditions of Service.

According to the Deputy President South, National Union of Electricity Employees, NUEE, Engr. Sir Joe Oforka the protest is against the management of Enugu Electricity Distribution Company, EEDC for unnecessarily harassing their members.


NUEE lamented the inhuman and callous treatment meted at the members of staff in the employ of Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC)'s management.

They alleged that the Management of the Company has , with collaboration of the Police, continued to harass, arrest and detain workers at the Armed Robbery Unit of the police Force located at Awkuzu on charges of extortion in the field.

The Union has made various entreats for the release of the members held under custody for over five days, and apply internal mechanism to deal with the situation, but the management refused to effect their release.

The Union leadership therefore directed for a peaceful protest demanding for their immediate release and stoppage of further treating workers like common criminals.

Engr.Sir Joe Oforka , Deputy President South, National Union of Electricity Employees was unhappy with the methodology of treating workers as hardened criminals.


They said unless the detainees are released, and Management signs an agreement with the Union to stop the menace, going forward, the protest will take a new dimension.

The Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), Thursday, dismissed as untrue and frivolous the viral report on social media which accused the Anambra State Local Government Service Commission of corrupt practices.

This was even as the National Executive Council of the union, in a letter signed by the National Secretary, Conarde Gambo Isah, certified the Deputy President of NULGE in Anambra State, Comrade Nicholas Aromeh as Acting President following the exit of Comrade Chikwelu Adigwe from the service of Local Government Service Commission.

Isah, in the letter made available to our reporter, clarified that his appointment takes immediate effect "and you are
to summon emergency State Executive Council (SEC) on or before Friday 26 July, 2024 to brief them on the state of affairs and development that happened in the Anambra State NULGE. Finally, you are to keep the National Secretariat abreast of further development in the Union," the statement stated."

Comrade Aromeh Nicholas, while addressing the media after taken over the mantle of leadership in Awka, said the union had no issue with their employer, Anambra State Local Government Service Commission, and could not have authored such reports while enjoying harmonious working relationship aside duly receiving their entitlements.

The viral media reports had alleged that the commission Chairman, Vincent Ifeanyi Ezeaka diverted about 16.8millon transport Largess Governor Chukwuma Soludo gave to Local government workers during their recent event but Aromeh explained that the funds to his best of knowledge, were distributed accordingly to all those concerned, adding that NULGE neither agitated over it nor wrote any petition to that effect because it was not under dispute.

He also queried authenticity of the viral message which he noted was neither signed nor authorised by any officer of the union, even as he has contacted the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Chairman to equally ascertain the source of the petition during which he was told that it was sent in by unknown person.

According to him, NULGE knew the best way of approaching their employer for what action that needs their attention, and under his current administration, the union would rather beef up action towards ensuring that welfare of members, including work ethics improved so as to impact positively on the populace.

Aromeh further assured local government workers that his office would run an open door policy, as well as work towards reuniting members to forge common goals as there were no faction in the union.

He also vowed to reunite and restrategise towards ensuring that the welfare of members were taken care of by the government.

The Governor of Anambra State, Professor Chukwuma Charles So[/font]ludo, CFR, has mourned the passing of the distinguished statesman, notable patriot, renowned businessman, and President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, on Thursday July 25, 2024 at the age of 82 years[font=Lucida Sans Unicode] after a brief illness.

In his condolence message, Governor Soludo expressed profound sadness on the passage of the elder statesman, describing it as a monumental loss not only to his immediate family and the Igbo nation but to Nigeria as a whole.

The Governor further described Chief Iwuanyanwu as a personal mentor, a great supporter as well as an influential figure whose life and wise counsel were a tribute to exceptional leadership, patriotism, and steadfast dedication to the progress of the Igbo nation and Nigeria as a Country. His contributions to the socio-economic development of Nigeria are immeasurable. As the publisher of the Champion Newspapers and owner of several other businesses, his entrepreneurial spirit and philanthropic endeavours have left an enduring legacy in our nation.

Also, as the 11th President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, he provided exemplary leadership, fostering unity, and championing the interests of Ndigbo even while building bridges of peace across Nigeria.

Recall that the MD/CEO of Awka Capital Territory Development Authority, Ossy Onuko, had earlier in the year indicated that plans were underway for some football professionals and coaches from FC Barcelona in Spain to come scouting for players in Awka that will be given an opportunity to join the Spanish club in their lower divisions.

This evening, Sunday 21st July, the three-man team, namely - Daniel Busquets Ayllón, Albert Atmeller Lurbe and Ejike Paschal, arrived in Awka, and was given a warm reception by the MD and the Chairman Anambra State Sports Commission, Patrick Estate.

Speaking to newsmen, Ossy Onuko, highlighted that the Governor, Prof. Charles Chukwuma Soludo, has provided the platform for the growth/development of sports in the State, hence the willingness of sports giants like FC Barcelona to approve the coming of their officials to Anambra State out of the whole states in Nigeria.

Also speaking, the Chairman of Anambra Sports Commission applauded the initiative and appreciated the MD of ACTDA and his team for championing such an idea. In furtherance of his administration's sustainable economic initiative, Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR, has inaugurated the distribution of one million and forty cash crops across the state.

Among the cash crops currently being distributed through the 326 political wards through the Umunna system are seven hundred thousand palm seedlings, two hundred thousand ukwa seedlings, fifty thousand bitter kola and forty thousand paw-paw seedlings.

"We are celebrating the revolution, and we are here to signpost again one of the silver bullets that we have crafted to be able to drive sustainable environment, wealth creation, leaving no one behind.

"We are here to launch an ongoing programme designed to plant 10 million seedlings in Anambra over the next few years.

"Palm, oil, coconut oil, and other economic trees will in the medium term be the next oil.

"Anambra is in many ways the second Lagos in many terms.

"Anambra has the second smallest land mass after Lagos. While Lagos is expanding by reclaiming its land mass into the ocean, Anambra's land mass is shrinking due to erosion, with over 1000 active erosion sites.

"This is why we are economical with land management and usage," the governor stressed.

Governor Soludo acknowledged that in the future, Anambra will be a land driven by industrialization and commerce, pointing out that his administration is making steady progress on all the five pillars of development of his government

"Urban regeneration and community planning, water scheme, etc, are going on simultaneously.

"Part of our future lies in our past.

"Today, we celebrate our founding fathers who helped to create the first prosperity in the first republic, including MI Okpara, Ahmadu Bello, etc.

"We must learn from our past to empower our people in a sustainable manner. Let us reinvent our past. The target is to empower over one million households.

"Our agenda is to empower people sustainably, to give them fish for life, creating the greenest and sustainable environment in the process.

Governor Soludo, who recalled that 1.1 million seedlings have been distributed between 2022 and 2023, emphasized that with the initiative, a new industrial eco system is emerging.

"Where do we go from here?

"Next year, we will distribute at least another 1,000,000 seedlings, same every year. The target is to hit 10 million seedlings.

"We are mainstreaming tree planting as a culture to make Anambra earn carbon credit.

"We encourage the educational institutions to turn their environment to become green, plant a tree, it will help with our environment and ecology.

"We have porous sandy soil. It will help with our fight against land degradation.

"To every community, if you have land ready for plantation, we will help you with seedlings.

"Ndị Anambra, I can see that the future which will endure many decades after we have left office.

"What you plant today will be for your children, your great grand children and your great great grand children.

"This is a revolution to everybody. This initiative is the goal of APGA, "the governor concluded.

The Minister for Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Mohammad Abubakar represented by the Director of the Ministry, Arthur Mbuba, lauded Governor Soludo's government for driving the initiative which is a strong poverty alleviation programme and expressed commitment to partnering with Anambra State, especially in the agriculture sector.

Speaking earlier, the Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr. Foster Ihejiofor described Governor Soludo as a rare mixture of brain and heart, saying that he always thinks of how to make everyone free and prosperous, especially the weak and vulnerable in the society.

A Non-Governmental Organization, Dr. Chioma Awuzie Foundation (DCAF) has awarded one-off scholarships to 17 selected indigent students from public tertiary education institutions in Anambra State.

The founder and Chairman, Board of Trustees of the Foundation, Dr. Chioma Awuzie, while speaking on the 2024 Annual Scholarship Award and Charity Programme ceremony at the Main Auditorium of Federal Polytechnic, Oko, harped that plans were on to expand the scholarship through reaching out to more deserving students across the nation.

She listed other areas the foundation had tirelessly touched lives to include health and medical support, community care and charity programmes, youth empowerment and women development as well as pregnancy/childbirth palliatives.

She said, "DCAF was established and incorporated in 2021 with a clear vision of creating a platform that empowers the youth, uplifts women, and supports the less privileged in our society.

"Our mission is rooted in the belief that every individual, regardless of their background, deserves the opportunity to reach their full potential and contribute meaningfully to their community.

"DCAF as a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) and Non-Profit and Charity Organization was set up to encourage and support an egalitarian society that works towards enhancing the standard of living for the underprivileged, creating greater access to higher education and, accelerating women and youth investment for poverty reduction in Nigeria.

"DCAF has continued to champion enhanced access to higher education, access to healthcare delivery via medical outreach, and community support, benefiting indigent students, pregnant women, widows, the needy, the elderly, inmates of correctional centers, youth, and women across in our society.

"Today, DCAF, in commemoration of my 51st Birthday Anniversary, will award one-off scholarships to 17 selected indigent students from public tertiary education institutions in Anambra State and celebrate the collective impact of our charitable endeavours."

"I'm the one sponsoring myself in school, having lost my dad 7 year ago. My mom who had been supportive is currently down.

Aniegbu Chijioke, year 1 student of Agricultural Education, Federal Technical College of Education Umunze, said, "though I came from a royal family, with my brother as former military governor of Borno State. But I didnt receive assistance from him and others which led to the delay in my studies."

Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR, today, Friday, 19th July, 2024, received the new Governing Council of Federal Polytechnic Oko.

The Council members led by its Chairman, Senator Barnabas Gemade were received at the Governor's Lodge, Amawbia.

Senator Gemade who was the former National Chairman of People's Democratic Party, described Governor Soludo as the most famous former Central Bank Governor in the history of the nation. He explained that their visit was to officially inform him that they had assumed duty in the institution as members of the governing councils members

"As Governor of the CBN, you brought tremendous innovation and we have seen that in your style of governance.

"Part of our work in the institution is to ensure that we collaborate with your government.

Responding, Governor Soludo congratulated them on their well-deserved appointment, illustrating his emotional attachment to the institution.

"I knew it when it was Oko arts of science. It later changed to Anambra State and finally, Federal Polytechnic, Oko.

"It has grown in number and size, but you have a humongous task ahead of you.

"I look at the institution with mixed feelings of hope and opportunities but also of despair.

"We know where the dream was, but whether we are heading to the position, I don't know.

"This is not peculiar to Federal Polytechnic, Oko. Most of our institutions are turning into glorified secondary school.

"We need to start asking the pivotal question of what our various individual institutions are known for. What comes to mind when our institutions are mentioned?

"Sadly, many of our institutions have gone down. We need to go back to the fundamental ideas of our forefathers.

"I'm still looking at the glass as half full," the governor stated.

He revealed that the new composition of the Council is an opportunity for something unique to be done in the institution, rather than being a place where people are given paper certificates without something to do when they graduate.

"In our own Polytechnic here in Mgbakwu, I have a team reviewing their status. They will soon submit their report on whether the institution is fit for purpose.

"It is a general problem of our education, particularly tertiary education.

"I call them the "villagization" of our institutions, but I see Nigeria in terms of composition of members of the board.

"There is huge work to be done, to be able to rescue our education sector.

"Here in Anambra, we recruited 8115 teachers from 18 states of the country because the interest of the Anambra child is to be taught by the best teacher. We are already practising what we preach.

The Awka Capital Territory Development Authority (ACTDA) has successfully completed a groundbreaking 130-meter road in Amansea, Awka North Local Government Area. The road, constructed using paving stones, features a complete drainage system and solar-powered street lights. This project is part of a broader initiative to enhance inner-city roads in the capital, introducing a new model for road construction that is both cost-effective and durable.

Addressing residents of Amaowelle Village in Amansea during the commissioning of the project, ACTDA Managing Director, Mr. Ossy Onuko, emphasized the strategic importance of the project, which aims to experiment with the use of paving stones for road construction. Inspired by successful implementations in other cities, Onuko stressed the project's potential to be replicated throughout Awka capital territory.

Commending Mr. Onuko for the project, member representing Awka North Constituency in the State House of Assembly Honorable John Mark Ikwunne praised Governor Soludo's appointment of effective leaders like Onuko. He noted that the project sets a new standard for infrastructure in the state and is expected to last over time.

On his part , the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Mr. Ifeanyi Okoma, represented by Director of Highway Mr. Noel Okoye, affirmed the longevity and quality of the rigid pavement. He praised the Governor's support for such innovative projects.

Also, the contractor that handled the project, Engineer Ojukwu Vincent, described the meticulous construction process which included extensive excavation of the swampy area, replacing bad soil with sharp sand, and multiple compaction stages to ensure the road's durability. He assured that the paving stone road is easy to maintain and built to last.

Additionally, Rev. Father Azubike Raphael Onyekwelu commended the governor's comprehensive efforts in road construction, security, and other developmental areas. He highlighted the project's success in alleviating flooding issues and improving mobility for local residents.

The unveiling ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including Transition Committee Chairman of Awka South, Prince Chinedu Okafor, Deputy Majority Leader and Chairman of the House Committee on Lands, Head of Development at ACTDA, Mr. Uche Ekwunife, TC Chairman of Njikoka Barr. Chinedu Ononiba and TC Chairman Orumba South Mr. Shedrck Azubike.

Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR has expressed strong commitment to partnering the federal government to adequately provide for the health needs of ndị Anambra, especially the poor, the down-trodden and the forgotten.

Governor Soludo stated this when the Minister for Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate paid a courtesy call on him at the Governor's Lodge, Amawbia.

The Minister is on a work visit to the state.

Governor Soludo appreciated the Minister for the great job he is doing, especially for recognizing that human capital is a critical part of development, to which health is the nucleus.

Governor Soludo who sadly reflected that the life expectancy of the average Nigerian is one of the lowest, pointed out that his administration is prioritising primary healthcare, to grant access and affordability to citizens who truly have need of it.

The Governor added that because of his administration's targeted interventions in the sector, over 60,000 people have benefitted from its free antenatal care and delivery services and maintained that his government is intentionally prioritizing provision of portable water, sanitation, waste management for a greater number of ndị Anambra.

"I see room for partnership in this regard.

"Strategic partnership along this chain will get it to work", the Governor revealed.

While basking in his administration's Public-Private-Community-Partnership, PPCP model, Governor Soludo called for a rethink of the mechanisms in delivering value to the people to ensure effectiveness and efficiency, through devolution of responsibilities.

"The programmes we implement here is not only for Anambra but for Nigeria.

"When we assumed office, seventy eight percent of our people access healthcare through the private institutions, but today, as we are providing for their health needs, the number is decreasing", he stressed.

Governor Soludo also spoke about the numerous health interventions by his administration including building of General Hospitals where they are needed, strengthening of the primary healthcare system across the 326 political wards of the state, ongoing construction of a pharmaceutical hub in Ogboji, among others expressing optimism that beyond being a drug distribution point, Anambra would become a drug manufacturing point which will ultimately enhance quality assurance.

The Minister for Health and Social Welfare, Muhammad Ali Pate commended Governor Soludo's forthrightness in service delivery to ndị Anambra, having observed it from the proactiveness of the state health team and assured of deepening the synergy between Anambra state and the federal government, especially in the health sector.

He noted that because of Governor Soludo's leadership, more people now have access to quality and affordable healthcare across the state and encouraged him to do more.

The founder, Nwoke-Udi Palmwine Bar in Awka, Anambra State, Mazi Ndubuisi Ezeh has revealed how his passion for entertainment and promotion of Igbo culture inspired him into setting up the bubbling palm-wine bar joint at the popular Abakaliki street.

Ezeh, who hails from Ụdị in Enugu State, stated this in an interview shortly after receiving award Entrepreneur/Entertainment boss from the Icons award.

According to him, when he came to Awka in 2017 and found there was nowhere people could drink palm wine and eat other sumptuous local meals, he invested into igwo ji, ngwongwo and others using vegetables, to be diluted with palm-wine.

This he said he invested on because he had the skill, knowledge and great passion to use entertainment in furtherance of creating jobs and developing the Anambra State capital city.

He therefore urged the young generation to always be alerts to spot opportunities where they could utilise their skills and talents towards developing themselves and society at large.

Ezeh argued that it would be better to invest and explore in Nigeria even if one is good in furniture before relocating abroad so that he/she could easily found where to specialise in.

On his recent award, he described it as a testament to the dedication of his workers and customers, noting that they would continue to providing top-notch service, delicious local foods and a lively atmosphere for valued customers.

I was inundated with calls and messages about a trending video of a woman purportedly claiming to treat sickle cell disease with a concoction of orange juice and raw egg.

In the video, the woman who was seen claiming that a mixture of orange juice and raw eggs administered to her son with sickle cell disorder, cured him permanently without them having to rely on hospitals for medical treatments again.

While the woman deliberately shielded her son's identity from public view inorder not for concerned individuals to ascertain the extent of his illness and ask pertinent questions about her son's professional medical management, it is sad to say that the remedies she proffered should be a source for possible bacterial infections which is a nightmare for sickle cell patients.

It is disheartening to see the extent people can go for cheap publicity because of monetization of social media, thereby putting the health of others at risk. Such unhealthy remedies has no place in medical science and would only worsen the sickle cell condition. It is also important to note that in genotype education we have several types of phynotype, SS, SC, etc. What works for you might not work for another SCD patient. As a matter of fact Sickle Cell is of various degree, the chronic cases, the normal cases and the anemic cases with each varied management.

It is worthy of mention that sickle cell disease remains incurable and can only be managed through effective medication by visiting hospitals and establishing the correct diagnosis.

Other preventive measures like staying rehydrated, protecting the body from mosquito bites, staying in a clean and well ventilated room devoid of any bacteria infection, feeding well with nutritional values, avoiding news that could lead to shocks and traumatic situation, depressive state, avoiding stressful physically activities or tasks capable of triggering sickle cell crisis. All these rule and guidelines should be strictly adhered.

Moreso, the government at all levels should be proactive with policy making to address the challenges faced by sickle cell patients, and this include giving priority to our healthcare services by equipping them with modern facilities and reducing costs of treatment, which is a major reason for the emergence of quackery and unorthodox practices of vendors due to harsh economic conditions.

The purveyors of such unhealthy remedies in the treatment of sickle cell disease should be sternly warned to desist from discouraging patients from seeking medical attention as it poses a great danger to their health and wellbeing, thereby causing severe loss of lives and avoidable deaths in SCD community.

Management of sickle cell disorder should be handled by professionals especially experts like hematologists, and no room left for ignorant pretenders to paddle their deceptive and exploitative inclinations to the detriment of innocent victims who are already impoverished by financial distress caused by frequent breakdowns from sickle cell complications.

In a bold move to combat criminal activities in Anambra State, Governor Charles Soludo has established the Special Anambra Anti-Touting Squad (SASA). This newly formed unit aims to eliminate various forms of criminal activities such as one-chance robbery, drug abuse, handbag snatching, and illegal extortion of traders across markets in the state, particularly in Onitsha and its surrounding areas.

The Director of SASA, Hon Solomon Chukwuebuka Onwuemene, recently addressed the media in Awka, where he highlighted the positive impact of the anti-touting squad since its inception. He stated that reports of illegal extortion, one-chance robbery, handbag snatching, and other criminal incidents have decreased by fifteen percent in markets across the state.

Governor Soludo's administration is determined to restore law and order in Anambra, with a specific focus on Onitsha and its environs. The establishment of the anti-touting squad is a crucial step towards achieving this goal. The squad's primary objective is to ensure zero tolerance for touting in the state and create a pleasurable experience for pedestrians and commercial activities on the streets, roads, and markets.

Touting has had a detrimental effect on the growth and development of Onitsha, hence the urgent need to eradicate this menace. Governor Soludo aims to revive the traditional values that Anambra was once known for and restore the state's reputation as the Light of the Nation.

The Soludo administration has also prioritized youth empowerment programs. The ongoing "One Youth, Two Skills Empowerment Programme" has already lifted over five thousand youths from the streets in just two years. This initiative will continue to provide great opportunities for the youth of Anambra.

The SASA boss assured continuous collaboration with other security agencies to maintain a peaceful environment in the state. He urged individuals involved in touting and criminal activities to embrace the state government's empowerment programs, enabling them to become productive members of society and contribute to their families and communities.

Residents of Anambra State are encouraged to pray for Governor Soludo as he works towards his vision of creating a livable and prosperous state. With the establishment of the anti-touting squad, Anambra is taking a stand against criminal activities, ensuring the safety and well-being of its citizens.
