The problem with Nigeria, and most of subsaharan Africa is not the exports...but the type of export.

We are not exporting manufactured goods. We export raw materials...whose prices we do not control.

EG...we export crude. We need crude at 140 dollars per barrel to sort out all our money needs. But if we unilaterally raise the price to 140 dollars per barrel...our buyers will go and buy from other countries that are selling at the current, much lower, price, and we would be left with nothing.

We also spend a lot on subsides. The thing is, keeping prices of fuel low means that the more the cost of producing fuel rises, the more the cost of the subsidy...the more it eats into our budget.

The above is why we are poor, and why most subsaharan African countries are poor. Meanwhile countries that are rich..like China, Japan, and so on export.....manufactured goods...and have strong currencies.



Saudi has a strong currency...but they produce ten times more oil than we do., and have 40m people. But they spend a lot of excess dollars keeping their riyal strong. One year they ran through 600bn dollars just to keep their riyal strong....
