The contrasting view to atheism is not religion, which is where most people are missing it, including the OP, it is theism that is in stark contrast to atheism.

Atheism is not a lack of belief in religion as you postulated, it is a lack of belief in a deity. People do not believe in a religion instead they believe in the doctrines that guides that religion which are mostly hinged on a deity/god/gods.

So therefore,you cannot say that Atheism is a lack of belief in religion, any more than you can say that Theism is the belief in religion.
Emphasis here is on 'Deity/God/Gods(same thing). It is the belief or the lack of in a deity that makes the difference.

it's possible like I said it depends on how much trust he holds in his belief,he could change depending on the influence the college-if dominated by Christians- can have in his life,besides colleges are mostly dominated by atheist,that will be near impossible unless he's faced with a life-changing encounter.

since herd mentality is also present in atheism,yes it's a religion,it's your choice,which one you wanna follow,to me religion should' ve been a personal belief, people follow a particular religion because of the people that surrounds them e.g a child that grows up In a Christian home will go on to become an atheist when he departs to college because he will be surrounded by atheists unless he has a concrete belief
