A German-Madagascan expedition team in Madagascar has discovered a chameleon subspecies that is the size of a seed. The two of the tiny lizards were said to be the smallest reptile on earth, according to scientists. The male Brookesia nana, or nano-chameleon, has a body of just 13.5mm. This makes it the smallest of about 11,500 known species of reptiles, according to the Bavarian State Collection of Zoology in Munich. Its length from top to tail is 22mm (0.86in). A test of songbirds’ problem-solving skills has revealed how traffic noise impairs the animals’ abilities. Scientists set zebra finches a “battery of foraging tasks” in the presence or absence of the noise. They found that the sound of passing cars diminished the birds’ ability to find food. The results, published in the journal Proceedings B, suggest that noise pollution has “previously unconsidered consequences for wildlife”. The Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19 has declared Kogi a high-risk state for refusing to acknowledge the existence of the disease. The PTF also said that the Kogi State Government had failed to report testing, lacked isolation centres and, therefore, warned Nigerians to be wary of visiting the state. It said having analysed the pandemic in the country, 22 high burdened Local Government Areas within 13 states in the country had been identified. The National Incident Manager (NIM) of the PTF COVID-19 pandemic, Dr Mukhtar Muhammad, said this on Monday in Abuja, during the PTF briefing on COVID-19. Muhammad said: “In addition to these, we have states where data is not coming forth. If we don’t test, your data will not be analysed and if your data is not analysed, we won’t know the level of the pandemic in your state. Someone once sent me a message asking, “Is it possible to remember all that I read in a book?” My response was in the affirmative. It is indeed possible to remember all you read in a book. While it may not be hook, line and sinker, there are ways you can absorb all that you need to in a book. The goal of reading is for knowledge which ultimately leads to personal transformation. You can remember all you read in a book and I’ll show you how — in simple steps — in this piece. On Highlighting… Highlighting in your book will not help you remember what you read. Haven’t you observed that you can’t even remember what you highlighted in your book after few hours? It is because highlighting with a pen or marker in your book doesn’t help memory, remembrance or retention in any way. The best purpose highlighting serves is for location. It will help you locate something faster and easier in the book. Read Full Piece Here: https://olamidefrancis.medium.com/how-to-remember-all-you-read-in-a-book-1bf02d7a05ff

The impact of COVID-19 on the aviation industry globally has shifted to Nigeria as there are indications that the industry in Nigeria may be heading for doom. Speaking on this development, the President of Aviation Round Table, Elder Gbenga Olowo, also expressed fear over the future of the industry in the country. Olowo, who painted the gory picture of the industry in the face of the pandemic, when speaking with the newsmen in Lagos remarked that the vaccines may not prevent the infection. “I just pray that COVID-19 does not become everybody’s portion. Looking at the outlook, it is not very favourable. It might take us another two, three years to get to 2019 level and if we are expanding, we better expand sensibly and economically not just say I want to do airline for the sake of doing an airline. That is not it.” https://naturenews.africa/covid-19-nigeria-aviation-industry-on-the-brink-of-collapse/ |
International Labour Organization (ILO) has said that child labour decreased by 38 per cent in the last decade, but declared that 152 million children are still affected. According to ILO Director-General, Guy Ryder in a statement, COVID-19 pandemic has considerably worsened the situation, while calling for a joint and decisive action to reverse the trend. The statement also revealed that the ILO in collaboration with the Alliance 8.7 Global Partnership will be launching the International Year for the Elimination of Child Labour to encourage legislative and practical actions to eradicate child labour worldwide. It added that the international year was unanimously adopted in a UN General Assembly resolution in 2019, with the main aim of urging governments to do what is necessary to achieve Target 8.7 of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). https://naturenews.africa/152m-children-still-engage-in-child-labour-says-ilo/ |

The WHO team of international researchers that arrived in the central Chinese city of Wuhan on Thursday hopes to find clues to the origin of the COVID-19 pandemic. The visit has been shrouded in secrecy, with neither China nor the WHO revealing exactly what the team will do or where it will go. The search for the origins is likely to be a years-long effort that could help prevent future pandemics. The industrial and transportation hub on the Yangtze River is the first place the coronavirus surfaced in the world. It’s possible that the virus came to Wuhan undetected from elsewhere, but the city of 11 million is a logical place for the mission to start. People began falling ill in December 2019, many with links to a sprawling food market that dealt in live animals. The growing number of patients triggered alarms that prompted China’s Center for Disease Control and Prevention to send a team to investigate. https://naturenews.africa/covid-19-origin-what-who-researchers-found-in-wuhan/ |
The phrase “Readers are Leaders” is already a cliché. But let’s modify the phrase: ‘all readers might not be leaders but all leaders are readers.’ There is no limit to what unrivaled devotion to reading can do for you. It grows your mind, enriches your thoughts and improves your writing — to mention a few benefits. But this piece isn’t about the benefits of reading, so, let’s not be distracted. I have (you might have) met people who read at least 100 books in a calendar year. That’s an average of one book in three days. I thought that when I finally meet those set of people I call ‘BOOKies’ that they’ll have two heads and five eyes or even be an alien/superhuman. I was disappointed. They were humans like me. They even had more day-to-day obligations to attend to than me. Yet they still managed to pull that off. Now, don’t get me wrong, the goal of reading isn’t to match someone else’s reading prowess. It is for your personal transformation. However, the competition to read more than your friend is a healthy one, sometimes. I guess that — with great enthusiasm — you’ve stacked/selected a list of books you intend to read this year, maybe even more than you read last year. But let me sincerely tell you that your reading goals might meet its waterloo if you don’t have an execution plan. Below are a few — subtle but consequential and eccentric — reasons why you failed to meet up with your numbers last year and why you might suffer the same fate this year — despite your zest to read more. 1. Stop Reading What Doesn’t Interest You I bought one of the Harvard Business Review books in 300L. It was about innovation and building a system. I bought it with all the excitement in me, hoping to ‘devour’ all the knowledge and emerge a ‘superhuman’ after. Lol. Unfortunately, I didn’t like the book from the first page. I struggled to read the first two chapters before I dropped it. That was the end of all the enthusiasm — at that time — that I had about the book. Let me say it again: stop reading books you don’t like! If you get tired of a movie, what do you do? You stop seeing the movie, I guess. Do the same with books you don’t like too. Forcing a book that doesn’t interest you on yourself is a self-inflicting punishment. And it’s not your fault. Many factors could be involved…. Moonson rains leading to floods at Malaysia’s east coast has left at least six people dead and almost 50,000 evacuated, causing what residents described as the worst flooding in fifty years, authorities said. Rescue operations have been increased after locals complained they had to fend for themselves earlier this week. More than 47,000 people have fled their homes as heavy rains continued to batter the region on Friday, officials said. “I have lost everything. A tiny car, from Chinese automaker Wuling, has overtaken Tesla as the top-selling electric vehicle in China, and it costs just $5,000. The car was manufactured as a joint venture between local carmakers, Wuling, and General Motors, targeting young consumers and less affluent drivers. According to a user, it is China’s cheapest and most popular electric car and it is highly affordable. “It is highly affordable and the whole county is being encouraged to go electric. In August 2019, almost immediately after signing the African Continental Free Trade Area Agreement (AfCTA), Nigeria unexpectedly closed its borders against its neighbours. Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari said the action was to catalyse an auspicious rebirth of the economy, ensure food self-sufficiency, strengthen the porous borders and prevent the smuggling of rice and other products into the most populous black nation. Since then, food prices unprecedentedly soared, reaching an all-time high of 18.3% while inflation in the country of more than 200 million people rose to a three-year high of 14.9%, according to data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). The government promised that the closure would be brief and would be reopened before the end of the first quarter of 2020. It turned out to be an empty promise. During those times, the decision from the federal government was met with flak and furore from Nigerians home and abroad as well as relevant stakeholders in the ECOWAS community and neighbouring countries benefitting from trade relationship with Nigeria. “Food inflation is a good example of the outcome of the border closure, considering that 2020 saw 22 states in the country experience flooding, especially the food-producing areas,” Samuel Segun, an analyst at SMB Intelligence said.
