The Minister of Youth and Sports, Barrister Solomon Dalung yesterday led a group of 20 Christian clerics to observe “iftar” – the breaking of Ramadan fast – with Muslim clerics in Kaduna including respected Islamic scholar, Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi.

The minister, while speaking with newsmen after breaking fast with the Muslim clerics, said the effort is geared towards fostering inter-religious harmony and promoting peaceful co-existence among different faith organizations in Nigeria.

Mr. Dalung added, “This is the fourth year we have been coming to Kaduna with many Christian clerics including Reverend fathers, pastors, evangelist and other top Christian leaders from northern Nigeria to break-fast with Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi at his resident and to mix and interact with other top Muslim scholars so as to promote peace and encourage religious tolerance, and to show Nigerians that we are all created by one God “Allah” and Adam and Eve were our original parent.

PoliticsPolice Rescue Seven Contractors Kidnapped In Niger Delta by olokeded(op): 6:09pm On Jun 26, 2016
Seven contractors, including three Australians and a South African, have been released unharmed four days after they were kidnapped by gunmen in southern Nigeria, local police and a state security adviser said on Sunday.

Reports say police had earlier given accounts of how many had been seized and what their nationalities were, and that they all worked for cement company Lafarge on the outskirts of Calabar, Cross River State, in the Niger Delta.

Cross River State Commissioner Jimoh Ozi-Obeh said they were released “unhurt” on Sunday but gave no further details.

The state governor’s security adviser, Jude Ngajim said five expatriates and two Nigerians had been released.

“They are safe and sound,” he said, noting that a doctor had made medical checks and pronounced them “fit and sound”.

Kidnappings of foreigners are common in the region, which holds most of the OPEC member’s crude oil and contributes about 70 per cent of national income.

Nigeria has remained Africa’s top oil producer until a recent spate of attacks on oil facilities.

Lafarge Africa and Australian contractors Macmahon Holdings Ltd could not immediately be reached for comment.

CrimePolice Begins Manhunt For Ikorodu Attackers by olokeded(op): 3:39pm On Jun 26, 2016
The Lagos State Police Command has commenced aggressive manhunt for suspected militants who invaded Igbolomu and Ishawo areas of Ikorodu last Friday and unleashed mayhem on residents.

The gunmen, who were alleged to be from the Niger Delta, were said to have come in through the waterways close to the communities and started shooting sporadically, a development which led to the death of some people while others sustained various degree of injuries.

Addressing newsmen on Saturday, Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Fatai Owoseni, said an aggressive and massive manhunt had already commenced against the suspected militants, adding that the investigation was going on smoothly.

Owoseni, who was personally at the scene of the incident moments after the attack, also denied conflicting media reports as to the actual number of people that were killed by the attackers.

The CP disclosed that the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of Owutu responded with his men almost immediately after he was alerted, adding that mobile policemen were swiftly deployed to be patrolling the affected areas.

"The DPO in Owutu went to Igbolomu and the surrounding communities and as of the time he got there, he saw everybody running in panic and it could be maybe because of that immediate response the militants had fled the place and while moving round, he later found six corpses of the people that were killed and the police took over those corpses out of which two were immediately released to their families who said they want to go and burry according to Islamic rights, while we took the remaining four to the morgue.

"That was how we covered that place until we got support and reinforcement from the Nigerian Army who came to stay with us.

"I can confirm that the causality is six and no family till now has come out even while I was there to say that they have extra corpses apart from the ones that were recovered by the police in Owutu that immediately went to that place when the incident happened," the CP said.

Owoseni said before now, the police had been making arrests in the areas, while the militants who committed the latest atrocity were being hunted, expressing optimism that they would soon be apprehended.

"What people must know is that this is not an investigation or operation that you can just say one plus one. The guys are taking advantage of the creeks. They hit and run to the creeks and also use the wee hours in the night to carry out that operation. Anywhere in the world, the military and police hardly operate in the night and so they have been taking advantage of that and that is why we have now emplaced a permanent standby points in all the four areas that we have identified as where they are coming from," Owoseni said.

He added that the occupation of the standby points would be sustained by security forces, while a permanent solution would be found to the impunity that was being carried out by the pipeline vandals.

PoliticsStop Being Callous To Ekiti Workers - APC Tells Fayose by olokeded(op): 6:12pm On Jun 22, 2016
The Ekiti State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has warned Governor Ayodele Fayose to stop being wicked to the workers by refusing to pay their salaries when evidence abounds that the state has money to fulfil its monthly obligation to workers.

In a statement in Ado-Ekiti by the Publicity Secretary of the party in the state, Taiwo Olatunbosun, the party said the latest revelation that put Fayose’s private account in excess of N4billion had proved the party right in its consistent position that the state’s money was being misapplied while the workers suffered.

“We have said over time that the state has money to pay workers’ salaries after the governor collected 20 months Federal and local governments’ allocations, N9.6b bailout cash, N22 billion refunds on federal roads, N2 billion Ecological Fund, CBN N2 billion SME loan, cut-throat taxes on IGR, including taxation of primary school pupils and N5 million charge on each of all the banks in the state for their community social responsibility, all that are kept in accounts that are not known to the state’s financial system,” he explained.

Berating the governor for refusing to implement TSA to enhance transparent financial regulation to check fraud, Olatunbosun said the latest revelation was a confirmation of the party’s allegation that a man that could not be linked to any thriving personal business had such huge balances in his personal accounts for private comfort while Ekiti workers suffered.

“The man that is doing all these was yesterday holding a meeting with Labour leaders, begging them to take one salary out of six months while he collects his monthly N250 million security vote and other millions for monthly running grants.

“This is a wicked and callous demonstration of insensitivity to the harsh conditions under which Ekiti workers live after six of them lost their lives over inability to raise money to take care of their health needs,” Olatunbosun said.

He also chided the governor over jettisoning of his stomach infrastructure in favour of needless projects that were potential avenues for misapplication of the state money, citing the abandoned airport project and needless flyover at a spot in the state capital that has no record of traffic gridlock.

Calling on Ekiti workers to insist on getting their full pay, Olatunbosun said the governor had no excuse to continue to owe workers, as recent revelations over Fayose’s multiple accounts he ran with his associates was evidence that Ekiti had enough money that was being misapplied.

PoliticsConstruction Of Abule Egba And Ajah Fly Over In Lagos (Photos) by olokeded(op): 3:07pm On Jun 20, 2016
In an effort to address traffic congestion in major parts of the State, the Lagos State Executive Council under the leadership of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode in December last year approved the construction of flyover for two of the State's high-density traffic zones- Ajah round about and Abule Egba junction.

The two major projects shortly after approval were duly awarded to contractors for a speedy commencement of work.

In Ajah, the construction of the reinforced concrete flyover and signalized intersection at Ajah roundabout is being simultaneously constructed with the rehabilitation of Freedom Road in Lekki, with a view to reducing the heavy traffic being recorded at the Ajah round-about and the Lekki-Ikoyi axis.

Likewise, the construction of a reinforced concrete dual-carriage flyover bridge at Abule Egba junction will equally bring joy and relief to millions of commuters that use the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway in Ifako-Ijaye Local Government Area of the State on a daily basis when completed.

So far, work is ongoing in both locations so as to meet up with the 16 months timeline for the delivery of both projects as shown in the pictures below.

PoliticsOgun Dried River: Lagos Government Releases Statement by olokeded(op): 2:15pm On Jun 20, 2016
The Lagos State Government on Monday warned residents to keep off the Ogun River, near the Kara Cattle Market which was recently blocked by vegetation, saying that the river could open up at any time with dire consequences.

Last weekend, the river was taken over by vegetation, caused by a heavy storm, which created a compacted layer over the river.

Residents in the area were stunned by the incident and turned the area to a tourist site of some sort, with some residents seen walking on the blocked river and taking pictures.

But the State Government in a statement signed by the Commissioner for Waterfront Infrastructure Development, Engr. Adebowale Akinsanya, said it was dangerous for residents to besiege the dry area as the flow of the river was still active beneath.

He said, “It is important to notify the public that have been worried about the environmental consequence of a dried up river to note that the flow of the river is still active beneath the vegetation and the situation is been evaluated.

“However, because of the compacted nature of the vegetation residents and onlookers are of the erroneous belief that the river has suddenly dried up and can walk across the vegetation.

A lot of people that have turned the place to a tourist destination are unaware of the danger lying ahead. It's important for the public to be aware that the vegetation can give away at any time and can lead to a potential disastrous situation,” he said.

He also advised residents to go about their lawful business and as well desist from the habit of parking on the bridge to take pictures, which according to him was causing serious traffic, hardship and loss of business time to other commuters on the road.

“Carrying out any activities on the blockage of this river is unsafe, dangerous and disastrous.

Please keep off,” Akinsanya warned.

PoliticsPHOTO: Ambode Attends Art Exhibition On Lagos In Belgium by olokeded(op): 2:30pm On Jun 18, 2016
Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode on Friday in Brussels, Belgium, underscored the importance of using art and culture to promote democratic governance and advance people-oriented policies.

He spoke at the Center for Fine Arts (BOZAR) in Brussels while attending the Center’s 2016 Summer Photography Exhibition as a Special Guest of Honour.

The exhibition, which largely focused on Lagos under the theme ‘Dey Your Lane - Lagos Variations’, was an attempt to understand Lagos through those who feel it the most and can express these cognitive and emotional responses in an engaging and creative manner.

Governor Ambode seized the opportunity to call on all political leaders to partner with artists so that they can benefit from their creative and artistic imagination to tackle some of the challenges confronting megacities such as exponential urbanization.

He also used the medium to announce his administration's determination to develop a new museum in the State.

Governor Ambode emphasized that his government’s engagement with the art, culture and entertainment sector, was in fulfillment of one of his key campaign promises, to vigorously pursue Project THESE, which stands for: Tourism, Hospitality, Entertainment, Sport through Excellence.

The event was attended by Belgium’s senior government officials including the Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Affairs, Mr Didier Reynders and his wife, the wife of Lagos State Governor, Mrs Bolanle Ambode, the Lagos State Commissioner for Tourism, Mr. Folarin Coker, and the Special Adviser to the Governor on Overseas Affairs and Investment, Professor Ademola Abass.

Earlier in the day, Governor Ambode met with the Managing Director (Africa) of the European Union’s External Action Services, (EEAS), Mr Koen Vervaeke, in Brussels.

The meeting explored possible areas of collaboration between Lagos State and the European Union.

Mr. Varvaeke commended the progress Governor Ambode’s administration has made in the last one year, particularly in the area of security and infrastructural development.

Responding, Governor Ambode said his strides so far in the State were aimed at complementing President Muhammadu Buhari’s strong leadership since he assumed office on May 29, 2015.

The Governor said, "What we are doing in Lagos is to implement the policy direction from Abuja upon which we campaigned. We are lucky to have this synergy between Lagos State and Abuja and that can only be for the good of Lagos State and Nigeria in general."
