Nigerian music superstar and Mavin first lady, Tiwatope Savage-Balogun, better known as Tiwa Savage, is without a doubt the biggest female pop artiste the country parades and has been on top of the rung for quite a while. However, the Lagos born multiple awards winning singer didn’t just stroll to the top, she got there following a time tested process which included planning, preparation and opportunity. Metronaija compiles the moments that defined her glittering career… She identified her calling early: Though Tiwa was born in Ikeja, Lagos, after her relocation to London at just 11 years old, as a high school student, she played the trombone for her school’s orchestra band. At 16, she was already doing backup vocals for George Michael. She Got Formal Music Training: Having identified her calling to be music, she didn’t go to school to study Agric or Medicine. She attended and graduated from Berkeley College of Music ( New York, USA) with a degree in professional music. Tiwa tested herself against her peers: The precocious singer participated in a music competition as a student In 2006,and as she advanced to the final 24 in the UK edition of The X Factor. This gave her a taste of fame and glamour and after tasting the limelight, she never looked back. She learned from the masters: It is one thing to have a particular skill and it is another to hone that skill to perfection. One of the best ways to sharpen your skills is to learn from the masters and that is what Tiwa did. She did back up for stellar musicians such as Mary J. Blige, Chaka Khan, Blu Cantrell, Emma Bunton, Kelly Clarkson, Andrea Bocelli, and Ms. Dynamite, amongst others. She has also performed on stage with Sting, 50 Cent, The Black Eyed Peas, Eminem, Robbie Williams and Destiny’s Child, to name a few. She met Teebillz: By the time Tiwa met Teebillz, she knew she was ready to step out of the shadows and needed someone who understood the Nigerian terrain. This led her to send e-mails of her music to Tee Billz who was managing Sinzu (Sauce Kid) at the time. “I sent him my music and he didn’t listen to it”, said Tiwa Savage of that attempt. She didn’t stop there however, she walked up to Teebillz and confronted him next time they saw. “I met Teebillz in Los Angeles at a Timaya concert actually and I was at that time looking for a manager and he didn’t listen to my CD I had sent him unfortunately. So when I saw him, I was a bit angry. I was like ‘I dropped my songs a few weeks ago and I am the next big thing and you are missing out’…and he was like, “wow, calm down, who are you?” Meeting Teebillz was the major turning point of her musical career as he mentored and managed her from the wannabe star to the global superstar we have today. It was Teebillz who convinced her to move to Nigeria, and even then she was initially skeptical. He also told the then tom boy appearing Tiwa that she ‘had to shed weight, wax her eyebrows, and use make-up so she can look appealing to an average Nigerian music lover. The rest as they say is history as she has since then got signed on to one of Africa’s biggest music labels, Mavins records as well as Sony/ATV Music Publishing. Tiwa Savage has won over 15 local and international awards including the Best Female category at the MTV Africa Music Awards 2014. Also in 2014 she won the Channel O Music Video Awards for the Most Gifted Female with Eminado. She also scooped the Nigeria Music Video Awards (NMVA) for Best Highlife with smash hit, “Ife Wa Gbona”. Tiwa savage also won the Channel O Music Video Awards for Most Gifted R&B Music Video of the Year with “Oyi (Remix)” (Flavour N’abania featuring Tiwa Savage). Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, that Nigerians have now realised that the ruling party, All Progressives Congress is not Nigeria's 'saviour' after all - as they were meant to believe. Speaking in Dutse, Jigawa state, on Monday, April 25, during the PDP membership mobilisation programme, Wike said Nigerians have now seen that APC was built on deceit. He said this would give the PDP a chance to return to power in 2019. “What happened in 2015 has opened the eyes of Nigerians. Nigerians have lost faith in APC. From what we have seen, it is obvious that Nigerians were deceived. They have seen the deceit of APC and they have returned to where they belong," he said. “They have seen the truth and they are back to their original party. The false stories of 2015 will no longer be accepted and come 2019, PDP will bounce back to power. “I am going back to the Niger Delta to tell the people that PDP is fully rooted in the north.” He said for thousands of people to gather for the PDP event in the state, it means that there is no APC Jigawa. The PDP National Chairman, Ali Modu Sheriff, who was also present at the rally said “APC is finished.” Also in attendance were former governor of Kano, Ibrahim Shekarau, and former governor of Kaduna state, Ramalan Yero. http://www.metronaija.com/2016/04/nigerians-have-lost-faith-in-apc-wike.html cc: lalasticlala mynd44 |

The joint military force deployed to protect oil infrastructure in the Niger Delta on Friday, April 22, reaffirmed its resolve to crackdown on vandals and economic saboteurs. According to the spokesman for the Special Force, Col. Isa Ado, the military is poised to deal with a reported threat by vandals to resume attacks on oil facilities. The Force, dubbed 'Operation Pulo Shield' said it would ensure the arrest of oil vandals and their accomplices for prosecution. “Anybody or group masquerading as militants are criminals and will be resisted and crushed in line with the mandate of the joint force in the Niger Delta," the statement said. “The Federal Government granted amnesty to repentant agitators and the grant automatically ends militancy and agitation in the region. Any group or persons by whatever guise will be treated like common criminals. “The force had carried out aggressive patrols and surveillances within the waterways and the creeks which led to the arrest of suspects, arms and ammunition, illegal oil bunkering vessels and barges. “Those arrested are at various stages of prosecution in courts of competent jurisdiction.” It warned vandals that threatened to attack facilities to have a re-think and desist from crossing the path of Operation Pulo Shield or be ready to face the consequences of their action. http://www.metronaija.com/2016/04/joint-military-force-declares-war-on.html cc: lalasticlala mynd44 |

The Senior Staff Association of Electricity and Allied Companies (SSAEAC) on Monday said it understands thoroughly the problems plaguing Nigeria’s power sector and why the nation faces perennial darkness. Mr Chris Okonkwo, the newly-elected president of the union said members are ready to reveal the challenges facing the Power sector in Nigeria and how to solve them He spoke to journalists in Lagos during the handover ceremony of its outgoing president, Mr Bede Opara. According to Okonkwo, the focus of his administration is to ensure that the Federal Government is informed about the problems inhibiting the development of Power and how it will be solved. “Our challenge is to make sure that the government knows the facts that are hidden from it, to ensure that the right thing is done. Our new administration has been talking to key government agencies, even on off-point issues, to know the facts on how to solve problems in the Power sector. “We shall use our knowledge to engage the President, Ministers, and other stakeholders. We shall explain to the president low monetary collection by the Distribution Companies (DISCOs) and the non supply of meters, even when consumers have paid,’’ he said. The new president said that the biggest challenge currently facing the sector was the after effect of privatisation, which has failed to yield the expected results for the government. He said that the intention for the privatisation was to free money for the government to invest in other areas and make the electricity sector more efficient. He said that SSAEAC would focus on collaborating with the National Union of Electricity Employees, to achieve a peaceful Power sector in Nigeria, devoid of crisis. Okonkwo, however, noted that the success to achieve a peaceful Power sector depended on the cooperation of management in the electricity sector. He said that managers of any organisation should see workers as partners in progress, to achieve more benefits. Okonkwo said that the unions would not relent until the government listened to them on how to improve the sector. http://www.metronaija.com/2016/04/we-know-true-problem-of-poor-power.html cc: lalasticlala mynd44 |

“We are just colleagues ” Contrary to social media reports, famous actress cum film maker,Funke Akindele, better addressed as Jenifa, has denied confirming romance with music act,Rasheed Bello, popularly known as JJC. She added that they’re only colleagues. Speaking with Metronaija via her spokesperson,Mr Biodun Kupoluyi,on Friday,April 15,2016,the Jenifa actress described the report as mere fabrication and a figment of people’s imagination. “That’s not true. They’re just professional colleagues. And JJC has made a lot of input into what Funke Akindele is doing in terms of her career. It is not impossible for people to insinuate when they see two people that are close. But the truth is that they’re colleagues” Meanwhile, social media has been agog in the last few days with the story of the A-list actress confirming her romance with JJC who reportedly already has three children-18,15 and 10 out of wedlock, and from three different women. This speculation was, however, fueled when the talented thespian reportedly updated her snap chat and shared a picture of herself and JJC cuddled up in bed with the headline,’Oooh back to bed with my boo”. Reportedly, she also shared a video of herself and JJC on the same account saying,”Taking breakfast with my boo.” Meanwhile,Akindele was once married to Kehinde Almoroof Oleyede(Kendoo). The marriage crashed irreparably in 2013,barely a year after it was consummated. Since then, not much has been reported about the Ikorodu,Lagos born theatre practitioner’s love life, not until recently when her closeness and working relationship with her alleged new lover,JJC became suggestive of clandestine move. But when Metronaija contacted Jenifa’s media man,Kupoluyi,he denied it all. http://www.metronaija.com/2016/04/funke-akindele-denies-confirming.html cc: lalasticlala |

Two muslims suddenly undressed themselves at a service organised by the Christian Association of Nigeria in Jos, creating an uproar in the assembly. It happened during Easter and the police on patrol had to be called in to arrest them. As the prosecution told the court: `The duo undressed themselves and started to interrupt an Easter rally organised by CAN around the Charcoal Market in Terminus. “They were trying to also incite others to join them in interrupting the rally but the police arrested the convict while the other man escaped,’’ he said. The prosecutor said that during police investigation, the man identified as Adamu Yakubu, confessed committed the crime. The prosecutor said that during police investigation, the convict confessed committed the crime. The stripper was convicted today by a Jos Chief Magistrates’ Court. He was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment. Yakubu of Terminus Market, Jos, was charged with criminal conspiracy and disturbing a religious assembly contrary to Sections 97 and 212 of the Penal Code. The Magistrate, Mr Ashaibu Wase, sentenced him after he pleaded guilty and begged for leniency. Wase, who gave him an option to pay fine of N3,000, said the sentence would serve as a deterrent to others. Prosecutor Thomas Amuku had told the court that Insp. Danladi Sabo of the ‘A’ Division Police Station, while on patrol arrested the convict and took him to the station on March 28. http://www.metronaija.com/2016/04/two-muslim-in-jos-strip-na-ked-during.html cc: lalasticlala mynd44 |
The Nigeria Police Force said it has sanctioned 20 officers of various ranks across the country for misconduct, following complaints from members of the public through its Complaint Response Unit (CRU) between November 2015 and March. The Officer in Charge of the CRU, CSP Abayomi Shogunle, disclosed this in an interview in Abuja on Wednesday. “In the report we released in the first 100 days and up till now, about 20 officers with different ranks have been sanctioned across the country,’’ he said. Shogunle said the officers have gone through the various disciplinary procedures in the force. He said that between from January to March 31 the CRU received and processed 1,054 complaints from across the 36 states including the FCT. Shogunle said that Lagos state top the complaint chart with 239 complaints representing 22.68 per cent; FCT 190 complaints, representing 18.03 per cent; Rivers with 100 complaints or 9.49 per cent. He noted that the unit received only one compliant each from Ekiti, Sokoto and Yobe states, representing 0.09 per cent. He said that out of the number of complaints received, 899 cases were resolved and after investigation, 96 cases were discovered to be false while 59 cases were pending. Shogunle said that during the period under review, 21 distress calls were received by the unit. He said that there was a consistent decline in the number of complaints from Ebonyi, Benue, Oyo, FCT, Zamfara, Ogun, Bayelsa, Niger, Ondo and Yobe sates. Shogunle attributed the decline to the sanction against erring police officers that had deterred others from committing same crime. He said that the unit would make recommendations to the Inspector-General of Police on how to address the rising cases of complaints in some states. “We are still studying the reports and in the coming days we are going to make appropriate recommendations to the Inspector-General of Police on how the situation can best be addressed,’’ he said. He said that one of the challenges of the unit had been the inability of the unit to create more awareness among the grass roots. Shogunle said that basically the unit had partnered with the media to help in disseminating activities of the unit at the rural areas. He said that using the various police formations to create awareness would be counterproductive. The officer in charge said that with time most Nigerians would be aware of the existence and importance of the unit. He said that the establishment of the unit had minimised complaints against the police and also changed the ways members of the public interact with the police. “I can conveniently say that the CRU has significantly changed the way members of the public and police interact with each other,’’ he said. He advised members of the public to always obey the police officer and report any misconduct through the platforms provided by the unit. The Inspector-General of Police, Mr Solomon Arase, inaugurated the unit on Nov. 13, 2015. http://www.metronaija.com/2016/04/20-nigerian-policemen-sanctioned-after.html cc: lalasticlala mynd44 |

Privatisation of Nigeria’s power sector is not the cause of the blackout Nigerians are experiencing today. Mr Vincent Akpotaire, the acting Director-General, Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE), gave this view today. Rather, he blamed the long-standing decay in the sector, as the main cause of the present challenges. Akpotaire said that privatisation became the only option open to the government due to the need to have a process that would be self-sustaining and responsive and make electricity supply transparent and investment sustainable. “Privatisation is a process, it rides on the back of sector reform and sector reform is a necessity that arises from failure of infrastructure basically. “Privatisation is not the problem we are facing today; the problem we are facing today is getting the system that is now in place to run without glitches; to remove the bottlenecks in the system, because you are moving from one completely different system to a new one where the people take their obligations seriously. “Power is not stable yet, it cannot possibly be stable two years after privatisation. I think Nigerians should understand that. Power cannot be stable in this country after 40 years of decay and rot two years after privatisation.’’—Vincent Akpotaire of BPE “Power is not stable yet, it cannot possibly be stable two years after privatisation. I think Nigerians should understand that. “Power cannot be stable in this country after 40 years of decay and rot two years after privatisation.’’ Akpotaire said that the present administration had taken full charge of the situation by working out modalities to solve some of the issues in the sector. According to him, government is taking adequate steps to ensure that the new system that is in place begins to work properly in order to improve power supply. He advised the Federal Government to create incentives for the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) to strengthen its capacity to transmit more than it was doing presently. “Government can continue to fund the existing infrastructure, but at the same time government can encourage Public-Private Partnership in funding what was in the past called super grid. “This supergrid could transmit up to 760 megawatts and that gives a very robust capacity to wield power, so the lost regime in transmission will drop significantly.’’ He, however, urged Nigerians to be patient with the present administration, as it is doing everything possible to improve power supply. http://www.metronaija.com/2016/04/dont-expect-stable-electricity-supply.html cc: lalasticlala mynd44 |
Former senator who represented the Kogi West Senatorial District in the 6th and 7th Senate, Smart Adeyemi, has dumped the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC). He said he had no regret dumping his erstwhile Peoples Democratic Party. He also explained that his decision to join APC was to support President Muhammadu’s determination to develop every part of the country, especially his Kogi West constituency. He then urged all his supporters to move to the APC. http://www.metronaija.com/2016/04/senator-smart-adeyemi-defects-from-pdp.html cc: lalasticlala mynd44 |
The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State has said that the supposed reconciliation between Governor Ayo Fayose and Tope Aluko, who accused the governor of electoral fraud, changes nothing. Aluko had accused Fayose of receiving $37 million from former President, Goodluck Jonathan to rig the June 2014 elections in the state. The Ekiti APC’s comments were contained in a statement released by its Publicity Secretary, Taiwo Olatunbosun on Tuesday, April 6, 2016. It reads: “It is mischievous to insinuate that Aluko’s reconciliation with Fayose will hurt the credibility of the probe panel. We must note that Aluko swore to an oath before making his testimony at the probe panel, and so his statement remains sacrosanct till the last is heard on the matter to ensure justice in the resolution of Ekitigate.” “This is purely an internal matter within PDP and so APC has no hand in it. The reported meeting between Fayose and Aluko brokered by PDP leaders has proven conclusively that the latter is a full member of PDP.” “It is that recognition by PDP that made its leaders to invite the duo to a peace meeting, and contrary to Olayinka’s insinuation, it is on record that Aluko had always insisted that his revelation at the probe panel was in response to APC’s petition against him on the controversial election in which he had to make restitution through confession to clear his conscience.” Aluko is said to have reconciled with Fayose during a meeting in Lagos on Saturday, April 2. He has however denied the reports and described his attendance of the peace meeting as a tactical error. http://www.metronaija.com/2016/04/fayose-reconciliation-with-aluko.html cc: lalasticlala mynd44 |
