Barely 48 hours when some members of dreaded Boko Haram ambushed convoy of Governor Babagana Umara Zulum along Cross Kauwa-Baga road in Borno state leaving over 30 people dead including 10 policemen and 4 soldiers, another set of insurgents laid ambush along Monguno- Maiduguri axis and attacked the returning convoy on Sunday evening.



Monguno is north and about 80km drive to Maiduguri, the town hosted thousands of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) mostly from Marte, Baga, Kukawa, Dikwa and other surrounding Local Government Areas.



Sources said, the attack led to the shooting of a back tyre of the vehicle/bus conveying Journalists attached to the governor, but the driver manuveared and drove the vehicle on the flat wheel to escape the scene.



Although, details were sketchy at press time, one of the occupants/Journalist in the affected bus who did not want his name mentioned confirmed to our correspondent that the convoy ran into another Boko Haram ambush about 50km away to Maiduguri.



Unfortunately, the Journalist cell phone lines went off due to poor network, but investigation revealed that no casualty recorded in the latest Sunday ambush.

There comes a moment in a communication process when there seem to be a change or twist is the intention of a message sent, causing a sort of misinterpretation or misunderstanding at the receiving ends. Such scenarios are often pegged Semantic distortions or semantic barriers in mass communication or human communication at large. It has many turns and twists to it, giving it a commonplace in communication barriers.



What is Semantics?

Originally, Semantics as a word is crafted from a greek word ‘sema' which means sign. But in the contemporary interpretation gives it the new nomenclature, ‘semantic'.



Semantic as its new meaning describes, is the study of the meaning, sign and symbol use for communication purposes. In essence, the use of semantics is the use of signs and symbols and gestures in communication.



Semantic distortion/ Semantic barriers

By semantic distortion or semantic barrier, it simply means a twist in the meaning of a sign language, symbol or body language. This also means misunderstanding or misinterpretation in nonverbal communication.



Why semantics in communication

People share meaning differently, interpret massages differently and perceive meaning differently. From language, to culture, to signs and symbols, to body languages or gestures; people give meaning to communication messages based on what it means to them or even how they choose to.



However, in mass communication or in human communication generally, it is very necessary that you understand jow best to share meaning the way the receiver would to avoid misinterpretation.



For example, a wave of hand could mean ‘bye' and could also mean ‘no' in another instance. Just like kiss on the cheek means different things or maybe totally unaccountable in some climes.



By mere understanding what it means to the receiver first hand, helps you know how to use semantics ie. Signs and symbols in communication.



Factors that influence semantic distortion or semantic barriers



There are as many factors that influence communication that influence semantic distortions.

• Culture differences

• Languages differences

• Level of exposure

• Perception or selective filtering of messages

• Communication pattern



Communication however is said to be effective when there is a feedback. Be it oral or written communication or even semantics, you must take notice of the feedback you get as that tells how the receiver perceives the message to avoid , misunderstanding or misinterpretation

We want the Lagos State Government to look into the activities of a staff called Mr Oguntoyinbo in Eletu Odibo Senior High School at Abu-ile Oja,Yaba.This mathematics teacher has been committing alot of atrocities in the lives of all the students, parents and the Old Students Association (O.S.A).

Moreover,this man hardly comes to class and when he does,he received phone calls from his other personal businesses instead of carrying out his duty as a teacher.How can the students acquire good knowledge from this epileptic way of teaching? However, parents raised alarm on this issue during the parents meeting organized in the school.But their voices were not heard, let alone having the caution.he is hiding under the umbrella of being the year tutor of SSS3, giving excuses of too much work loaded on him as a reason of not being able to concentrate on normal class.

Furthermore,he is highly corrupt to the level of extorting money from students in order to promote them.When he was teaching SSS2,he extorted the students and parents.The school had massive promotion of students to SSS3.This made be the former principal Mrs Ajoko to move him to SSS3,so that there will not be room for extorting money from students.

Unfortunately, the year tutor of SSS3 was transferred.He became the year tutor of SSS3, which created more additional avenue for him to reap the students off their money.He gave students fake WAEC identification card for #500 and they must pay before he can handover the free calculators given to SSS3 students by the government.

Similarly,he withheld the original identification card for another #500.The students that were through with their WAEC are coming back to collect their identification card which was meant to be free for the sum of #500 because they can't check their results without it.

However, the man boldly told the students that they can't pass WAEC,it is only NECO they can pass due to his ulterior motives of making some income for himself.He was very strict on them during WAEC examination,so that more students can register for NECO and he can make huge money from them.

In addition,other government schools around sold their forms for #12500 while the school price is #16500.This additional hike in price money keeps everyone wondering "how come questions here and there". Since it is transferred to the school account, students heavily failed his subject in WAEC. Also,this man is just in the school to make money to the extent that his stay is affecting O.S.A(Old Students Association). Some members came to the school and complain about the over charging on testimonials,#5000 is too much for it.The secretary said it is Mr Oguntoyinbo that is in charge.

However,pls help us and share this until it gets to the right authorities.It is obvious that Mr Oguntoyinbo came to the school to use every opportunity available to make money for himself,we can all see he has left is primary assignment.

Add in people filing for federal Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) - gig workers and self-employed individuals who are not eligible for state programmes - and the total climbs to 1.5 million Americans who applied for unemployment benefits last week.

The big picture is even more sobering. Some 29,768,326 Americans were collecting unemployment benefits in the week ending August 29. That is roughly 28 million more people than February 1. Even adjusting for millions of double counts - individuals collecting benefits from both state and federal programmes - that number is still staggering.

What this signals is that the labour market recovery is losing steam and leaving millions of out-of-work Americans fearing for their futures as the March round of economic stimulus from Congress fades and legislators on Capitol Hill remain at odds over another virus relief aid package.

While more spending stimulus remains stalled, the Federal Reserve this week reiterated its commitment to use its lending powers to try and do what it can to help the nation's jobless get back to work.
