Education / MUST READ: JAMB Issues Strong Warning To Candidates by Oluwahfemi: 9:21pm On Mar 31, 2019

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) said it will not condone lateness by candidates to its 2019 Mock Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), scheduled for Monday, April 1.

The board’s Head, Media and Information, Fabian Benjamin, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday, in Lagos.

NAN reports that a total of 157,631 candidates have been scheduled to sit for the optional examination in some accredited Computer Based Centres (CBT) across the country.

According to Benjamin, all is now set for the conduct of the examination by the board.

“Just like the main UTME, candidates are expected to adhere strictly to all the rules guiding the test.

“I want to say that we are fully set to conduct the mock examination, which is scheduled to hold tomorrow, Monday across some centres nationwide.

“We will also like to appeal to candidates to ensure that they get to their various centres early enough for the necessary accreditation.

“No excuse for lateness will be entertained from any candidate, as the board takes this examination as seriously as the main UTME.

“All candidates must also ensure that they do their biometrics as failure to do this will mean no examination for such candidates.
“They are also expected not to access the examination hall with all the barred items by the JAMB, such as wrist watches, handsets and others,” he said.

He added that the date for the conduct of the UTME proper would commence on April 11.

NAN also reports that the mock test is being conducted mainly to test run facilities at the various accredited centres nationwide, as well as familiarise candidates with the process.

Over 1.8 million candidates had registered for the 2019 UTME.

Politics / ASUU Strike: INEC Raises Alarm Over 2019 Election by Oluwahfemi: 1:24pm On Dec 22, 2018

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman, Prof. Mahmoud Yakubu, has again expressed concern on the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

He spoke on Friday in Abuja after the swearing-in of the new Secretary to the Commission, Mrs Rose Oriaran-Anthony.

Yakubu warned of the implications on the 2019 general elections and disclosed that the commission would meet with union leaders in tertiary institutions for a way forward.

The INEC Chairman said that the ongoing strike was worrisome as the commission also sourced some of its election ad hoc staff from the tertiary institutions.

”The bulk of the ad hoc staff will be drawn from the National Youth Service Corps members but where there is shortfall, and obviously there would be shortfall, we rely on the universities.

”Remember we also rely on the universities to draw our collation and returning officers.

”So the ongoing strike is worrisome in case some of them say because of the ongoing strike they will not participate in the elections.

”But the ASUU has been good friend of the commission and we intend to meet with the President of the ASUU next week so that we can discuss and iron this out.

”We will also extend it to the lecturers of polytechnics and colleges of education so that we will meet with the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) and Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU) and all other unions in the tertiary education sub-sectors,” the chairman said.

Politics / Google CEO Tells US Why Pictures Of Donald Trump Comes Up When You Type “idiot” by Oluwahfemi: 8:43am On Dec 13, 2018

United State Congress, on Wednesday summoned Google CEO, Sundar Pichai to explain why the photo of its president, Donald Trump comes up when you type the word ‘Idiot’

It was learnt that when you type in “Idiot” in Google search, photos of Trump comes up

Republicans allege that Google’s search results are biased and that Democrats who work at Google choose liberal websites over conservative views for prime placement on Google services like Google search.

Several Republicans on the committee, including Rep. Lamar Smith, said there was “political bias baked into” Google’s culture.

Democratic Rep. Zoe Lofgren questioning, Google CEO, asked him to explain and convince them that there’s no conservative bias in Google.

Lofgren said to Pichai: “Manipulation of search results – I think it’s important to talk about how search works. Right now, if you Google the word ‘idiot,’ under images, a picture of Donald Trump comes up. I just did that.

“How would that happen? How does search work so that that would occur?

“So it’s not some little man sitting behind the curtain figuring out what we’re going to show the user – it’s basically a compilation of what users are generating, and trying to sort through that information.”

Pichai in response said Google does not manually control its search results.

According to him, it is generated by users’ frequent search.

He said: “We provide search today for – anytime you type in a keyword, we as Google, we have gone out and crawled and stored copies of billions of webpages in our index.

“We take the keyword and match it against webpages and rank them based on over 200 signals, things like relevance, freshness, popularity, how other people are using it. And based on that, at any given time, we try to rank and find the best results for that query. Then we evaluate them with external raters to make sure, and they evaluate it to objective guidelines, and that’s how we make sure the process is working.

“Last year we served over 3 trillion searches. Just as a fact, every single day, 15% of the searches Google sees, we have never seen them before.

“So this is working at scale. We don’t manually intervene on any particular search result.”

Politics / FG Has No Plan To Increase Price Of Petrol - PPPRA by Oluwahfemi: 4:15pm On Dec 11, 2018

The Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency, PPPRA, has said the Federal Government has no plans to increase the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit known as petrol.

PPPRA’s Executive Secretary, Abdulkadir Saidu assured that the pump price of petrol remained N145 per litre, News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, reports.

Saidu appealed to Nigerians to ignore the growing speculation on the purported imminent increase in the pump price.

He urged marketers to ensure that there was no price distortion in their respective retail outlets, adding that PPPRA would continue to carry out its oversight function of monitoring exercise in depots and in all filling stations across the country.

In a statement he issued on Tuesday, Saidu stated that PPRA will ensure adherence to the regulated price and to nip in the bud other forms of sharp practices at retail outlets.

The Executive Secretary further warned that adequate sanctions await any erring filling station.

Saidu commended petroleum product marketers in the country for embracing dialogue with the Federal Government to resolve the issues arising from payment of the outstanding fuel subsidy claims.

Saidu said that embarking on strike was not always the best option to address any industrial dispute, irrespective of the circumstances, adding that the multiplier effects were always too much to bear.

The executive secretary appealed to the leadership of the oil marketers’ associations to cooperate with government to find a workable solution to the issues emanating from the payment of subsidy arrears.

He noted that PPPRA would continue to support, cooperate and collaborate with marketers to ensure conducive industrial climate where the best of the oil and gas sector could be showcased.

Saidu also assured Nigerians of PPPRA’s total commitment to service delivery and uninterrupted petroleum product supply and distribution especially during this festive period and beyond.

He appealed to motorists and other PMS consumers to desist from panic-buying, as PPPRA was working hard with other agencies of government to ensure adequate supply and distribution of petroleum products nationwide.
