The Akoko Progressive Group (APG) has condemned the call for zoning by the Believer and Advocate for Rotational Agreement from Akoko North West/East to activate the zoning agreement for the Federal Constituency.

Politics / Akeredolu Brands CSP Desrespect To Sanwo-Olu Unacceptable by Oluwamarc(m): 10:40am On Jan 05, 2022
Press Statement

Southwest Governors:
Police Officer's Disrespect To
Sanwo-Olu An Unacceptable Intrusion
....say Lagos must deploy Amotekun now

We are in possession of a video which has gone viral on the social media concerning the disgraceful exchange between a police officer, a CSP, and the Governor of Lagos State, Mr Babajide Sanwoolu, the supposed Chief Security Officer of the State, at the Magodo Residential Estate.

The content of the video is very disconcerting, and this is being charitable. The utter disrespect, which underlines the response of the officer to the Governor establishes, beyond doubt, the impracticability of the current system, dubiously christened "Federalism". An arrangement, which compels the Governor of a State to seek clarifications on security issues in his jurisdiction from totally extraneous bodies or persons, is a sure recipe for anarchy.

We condemn, very strongly, this brazen assault on decency. We call on the IG to explain the justification for this intrusion. This is not acceptable. Any expectations of rapprochement between so called federating units and federal security agencies are becoming forlorn, progressively, due to deliberate acts which mock our very avowal to ethics and professionalism.

We condemn, in very clear terms, the role of the Attorney General of the Federation, Mr Abubakar Malami SAN in this act of gross moral turpitude.

We, on our part, will continue to interrogate the current system, which treats elected representatives of the people as mere prefects, while appointed office holders ride rough shod over them as Lords of the Manor. If the purported Chief Security Officers of the States of the Federation require clearance from the office of the IG on matters within their areas of jurisdictions, only hypocrites will wonder why the current security crisis deepens and there appears to be no solution in the foreseeable future.

We condemn very strongly, this brazen assault on decency. We call on the IG to explain the justification for this intrusion. This is not acceptable. Any expectations of rapprochement between so called federating units and federal security agencies are becoming forlorn, progressively, due to deliberate acts which mock our very avowal to ethics and professionalism.

We stand by our brother, the Governor of Lagos State. We advise him to deploy the Regional security outfit in the State to protect the lives and property of the people.

We call on the President and Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces to rein in the excesses of certain elements bent on acting in a manner capable of eroding the bond of trust existing between the people and the Federal Government. It is preposterous for political appointees to seek to undermine the very structure of service upon which their appointments rest.

Signed:
Arakunrin Oluwarotimi O. Akeredolu SAN

Politics / Sanwoolu: Promise Kept. by Oluwamarc(m): 10:22am On Dec 21, 2021
For many Lagosians, plying the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway is a journey that expects great mental readiness to face the inevitable, the incessant and notorious gridlock caused by the presence of heavy duty trucks complimented by the bad roads is one which often leaves commuters stranded for hours turning journey of lesser minutes or hours to marathon trips whose end can only be fathomed by the Divine.

Imagine the stress a worker would have to go through daily, spending over 7 to 9 hours in the gridlock just to go to work, the same scenario to replay itself later in the day when he/she is returning back home, consider the energy exerted to this fruitless and frustrating exercise, consider the precious and irredeemable time loss.

We are all aware that the gridlock has persisted due to the terrible condition of Apapa port, the concentration of Tank Farms in the area, indiscriminate parking of petroleum tankers and trailers wanting to load petroleum products from the tank farms and the racket created by persons benefiting from the chaotic situation.

While many past Government and administration in Lagos State have tried to address this huge menace and failed, the Babajide Sanwo-Olu led administration in Lagos State has not made hidden its intention of clearing this route by putting up the necessary measures to curtail the situation. To the delight of many in the State, the myth of the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway has finally been broken as the route has been cleared and made fit for decent movements for road users.

On the 3rd of December 2021, the Lagos State Government announced plans to commerce the removal and clearance of trucks parked indiscriminately along Oshodi-Apapa Expressway, as part of efforts to restore the free flow of traffic in the axis.

True to his words, the area has been cleared and decongested, the once notorious route has been transformed to a path with no obstruction to free flowing movement.

For a Governor who has done much to transform the State infrastructurally, where all local government areas in the state have felt the magic touch of the Sanwo-Olu led administration in Lagos State, it's not surprising to see the wonder which has been brought into place with the decongestation of the Apapa-Oshodi Expressway.

This is another promised been kept and delivered by a Governor who not only knows his onions but one who also cares for his people.

Politics / House Of Reps To Step Down Passage Of Army Budget by Oluwamarc(m): 9:22am On Dec 16, 2021
Strong indications have emerged emerged from the National Assembly that members of the House of Representatives are likely to step down the budget passage of Nigerian Army today. The move is seriously being contemplated ahead of the readiness of the Green Chamber to lay down and pass the national budget today.

Reason for the likely 'step down' of the Nigerian Army budget is not unconnected with the meagre N28 billion budgeted for capital projects in year 2022. This is in view of the worsening security situation in the country.

A source in the House of Representatives who pleaded anonymity said the budgetary provisions made for the capital projects of Nigerian Army in the 2022 budget was too meagre and totally unacceptable. The member described the budgeted sum as ridiculously small for a nation that is passing through unprecedented security challenges.

"Truth is that what has been budgeted for the capital projects of Nigerian Army is too small and not in any way acceptable to us. How on earth can a meagre sum of N28 billion be for the capital projects of an Army that is fighting several wars across the nation. How on earth can we expect improvement in the nation's security situation if this kind of ridiculous budget is allowed to stand".

The source further said that the budget of Nigerian Army will most likely be delayed as most members of the House Committee on Army are determined to move against the budget. The source also added that the Army budget might be stepped down today, while the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Farouk Yahaya will be re-invited for a proper and acceptable review of the capital budget.

"I can assure that most patriotic members of the House Committee on Army are poised to move against the passage of this capital projects budget of the Army. The right thing must be done for the nation to progress and enjoy peace. The right thing to do at this time is to call on the Chief of Army Staff once for a proper review of the capital projects budget", the source added.

Nairaland / General / We Won’t Reverse Travel Ban Over Fg’s Threat – UK by Oluwamarc(m): 5:10am On Dec 13, 2021
Adelani Adepegba and Stephen Angbulu

13 December 2021

Kindly share this story:

• Press statement on travel ban stands despite FG’s planned retaliation – High Commission

• UK, others lack moral rights to allow their airlines to come to Nigeria, says aviation minister

• We have recommended travel ban for Canada, United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia, others

The British High Commission on Sunday said the United Kingdom would not reverse its travel ban on Nigeria because of a threat of retaliation by the Federal Government.

The spokesman for the British High Commission, Dean Hurlock, said this in response to an inquiry by The PUNCH on Sunday over a statement by the Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika, that the UK, Canada and Saudi Arabia would be put on Nigeria’s travel ban on Tuesday.

Hurlock stated that Britain had made it clear that travel abroad would be different this year, adding that the UK was sticking to its “standard background lines.”

In a text message to the high commission, one of our correspondents stated that the Federal Government had said it would place a travel ban on the UK as a retaliatory move.

The correspondent then asked, “Will that make the UK to rescind its travel ban?”

In his response, Hurlock stated, “The UK Government propose sticking to our standard background lines on whether ‘x’ country will put us on the red list and avoid getting into hypothetical situations.

“The UK government has been  clear that travel abroad will be different this year and countries may impose border measures at short notice in line with their own coronavirus policies.”

He added that the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office travel advice was kept under constant review and asked travellers to continue to check it for entry requirements of the destination they plan to visit.

“Travellers can also sign up for e-mail alerts on GOV.UK to get the latest updates as soon as they happen. We are in regular conversations with other countries about their travel policies,” Hurlock explained.

Position stated in our press statement of last weekend still stands at present – UK high commission

In an earlier response to The PUNCH correspondent’s enquiry, he said, “The position stated in our press release  of last weekend still stands at present.”

In the press release, the UK had said Nigeria would be added to the travel red list as from 4am on December 6 following 21 cases of Omicron variant of COVID-19 reported in England, which had travel history from Nigeria.

“These are temporary measures that have been introduced to prevent further omicron cases from entering the UK and will be examined at the three-week review point on 20 December.”

The British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Catriona Laing, had said Omicron cases in the UK had clear links to overseas travel from Nigeria and South Africa.

Also On Thursday, Laing, in an interview with Channels Television, insisted that the travel ban was evidence-based.

According to her 19 out of 21 passengers with Omicron variant with Nigeria’s travel history flew directly to Britain from Nigeria.

But the Minister of Aviation, Sirika, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos on Sunday said the Federal Government would place travel ban on the UK, Canada, Argentina and Saudi Arabia as a retaliation for the travel restriction on Nigeria.

He disclosed the Federal Government  would restrict airlines coming from Canada, the UK and Saudi Arabia into Nigeria.

According to him, the decision  is to reciprocate restricted flights from Nigeria into those countries over the new COVID-19 variant, Omicron.

Sirika said the regime of the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari, (retd.) would also place the UK, Canada and Saudi Arabia on a red list over the outbreak and spread of the Omicron variant.

The minister noted that if those countries placed Nigeria on a red list, they lacked a moral right to have their airlines fly into Nigeria on commercial operations.

“There is also the case of Saudi Arabia that put Nigeria on the ban list. On Sunday, I participated in a meeting with the COVID-19 task force.

“We have given our input that it is not acceptable by us and we recommended that those Canada, the UK, Saudi Arabia and Argentina also be put on the red list.

“As they did to us, if they do not allow our citizens into their countries; who are they coming, as airlines, to pick from our country?

“They are not supposed to come in. I am very sure in the next three days; Monday or Tuesday, all those countries will be put on the red list of COVID-19,’’ the minister said.

He stressed that airlines of the affected countries remained banned and the countries placed on Nigeria’s red list.

Meanwhile, the President has called for stronger partnerships among ECOWAS leaders to tackle challenges facing the region.

Buhari who was speaking on Sunday at the 60th Ordinary Session of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States, also said the political, economic, security and the current  wave of the pandemic and its new Omicron variant requires collective action.

Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, disclosed this in a statement titled ‘President Buhari urges stronger partnership among ECOWAS countries to tackle health, economic, security challenges’.

According to Buhari, “All of these challenges require our collective action to work in concert with each other to pragmatically address and provide our people better prospects in life.

“Today’s realities remind us of the need to continue to forge stronger solidarity to address the new challenges, including the current third wave of the pandemic and its new Omicron variant.

“I am glad that the commission of the Economic Community of West African States and the West Africa Health Organisation are continuing to work with our respective National Disease Control Centres to mitigate the effects of the pandemic on our people and sub-region,” he said.

Leicester were out without seven players for Thursday’s decisive Europa League trip to Napoli due to coronavirus cases or illness, manager Brendan Rodgers.

Nigerian stars Kelechi Iheanacho and Ademola Lookman were among those who tested positive for COVID-19, according to Eurosports.

The newspaper also reported that Ayoze Perez was out for the Foxes after testing positive for Covid, adding that Kalidou Koulibaly, Victor Osimhen, Lorenzo Insigne, and Fabian Ruiz were out injured for Napoli.

Extra measures to curb rates of Covid-19 infections in England, including the introduction of vaccine passports for the first time, were announced by the British government on Wednesday due to fears over a surge in cases of the Omicron variant.

A Covid outbreak has left Tottenham without eight players and five members of staff for their Europa Conference League tie with Rennes.

“We’ve had some positive cases, some are generally not well, so we haven’t taken the risk,” said Rodgers, according to AFP.

“We will have seven unavailable, something you’ll see in time. You’ll see in the training tonight the ones who haven’t travelled. It’s been last few days really. In general, you’re starting to see a few more cases and, for us, it’s always about the health of our players.

“Travelling to a foreign country, we have to respect travelling into Italy. We still have a strong squad here, but unfortunately it’s not a fully fit squad.”

Rodgers said Leicester could have waited a further 24 hours to check the status of the ill players who are yet to test positive, but have decided against doing so as a precaution.

“We’ve taken every single measure, in terms of arriving here in the safest possible way to our host country, we have to respect the laws and health issues here,” added the Northern Irishman.

“We’ve taken every measure to make sure everyone was tested.

“The players who were unwell who we could’ve have maybe given 24 hours to feel better, we couldn’t take any risk with those, so we’ve kept them at home along with the other guys who were deemed positive.”

The Premier League on Monday reported 12 new positive coronavirus tests out of 3,154 tests among players and club staff. That was the highest figure of positive cases since late August

Politics / New Converts Stab RCCG Pastor To Death In Lagos Church by Oluwamarc(m): 4:46am On Dec 09, 2021
Suspected hoodlums have attacked and killed a pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God in FESTAC Town, in the Amuwo Odofin Local Government Area of Lagos State.

Our correspondent gathered that the victim, Pastor Babatunde Dada, was killed inside the RCCG Chapel of Resurrection on 13 Road, 6th Avenue, FESTAC Town.

The killing, which happened on Thursday, December 2, was said to have been perpetrated by two new converts who came to the church for the first time a Sunday before the incident.

The two youths were said to have come out during an altar call and surrendered their lives to Jesus.

The church accommodated them on its premises after they claimed to be stranded.

They had barely spent a week in the church when they reportedly stabbed the cleric to death.

A senior pastor in the church, Akin Odejare, declined comment on the incident when contacted by PUNCH Metro.

However, the wife of the pastor, Bose, told our correspondent on the phone that she called her husband on the day of the incident and he promised to come home to rest.

She said, “My husband was killed on December 2 at the church. He was the admin/accounts officer, as well as the parish pastor. I was not with him when he was killed, but I was told that they collected money from him. I heard that those who killed him were new converts.”

A family member, who is also a security expert, Mr Abolarinwa  Olatunbosun, told our correspondent on Wednesday that the pastor was killed after withdrawing money from a bank.

He said, “The pastor went to a bank to withdraw some money and went to rest on the first floor of the church. Two persons said to be new converts went to meet him upstairs, broke his head and killed him.

“The matter was reported to the police and one of the suspects, who ran to Ilorin, has been arrested.”

Olatunbosun said the killing might be for ritual purposes, adding that the assailants were suspected Internet fraudsters, aka Yahoo boys.

The expert said criminals were beginning to attack churches and pastors because they believed there was money in church.

He advised religious centres to be security conscious and put in place strategies that could stop criminals from killing, kidnapping and robbing leaders and worshippers.

A friend of the slain pastor, Fred Enemigin, who is the founder, Highflyers International, Lagos, said in a Facebook post that the pastor was stabbed multiple times.

He wrote, “Two boys had come to church last Sunday and they responded to the altar call by giving their lives to Christ. After church service, they waited to see the head pastor and told him that they were stranded without any place to stay.

“On compassionate grounds, the pastor allowed them to stay somewhere within the church premises pending when they would be resettled. Pastor Tunde Dada, who had for almost a decade been the accountant of RCCG Chapel of Resurrection Parish, was assigned to provide needed welfare for the boys until their matter would be sorted.

“On the fateful Thursday, Tunde was seated in his office and the boys targeting that they were alone on the church premises with him, entered his office and attacked him with knives and other sharp weapons. He was stabbed multiple times and places until they had him killed right there on the spot.

“Our minds are still searching for what the rift between the boys and Tunde was considering the fact that the Tunde we knew was a very gentle soul. Could they have asked for more welfare than what was approved for them and Tunde declined? What on earth would warrant this brutal killing by those who were recipients of a server of the church’s benevolence? There are many more questions that we have not found answers to.”

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Adekunle Ajisebutu, said he had yet to be briefed about the case.

H.E. Babajide Sanwo-Olu
The Governor of Lagos State,
The Secretariat,
Obafemi Awolowo way, Ikeja,
Lagos State, Nigeria.
Support for the Peace walk
We wish to congratulate the Lagos State government for handling the incident of EndSARS skillfully, and this is another confirmation of the status of the state as the Centre of Excellence and the pride of the continent of Africa. While other states are still struggling to come to terms with the reality and destruction that heralded the EndSARS protest all across the country, the Lagos State Government set up the panel to investigate the incident, out of the 32 recommendations made by the panel in the well-publicized Report of 15th November 2021, Government accepted 11, rejected only one and accepted six with modifications, this is commendable. And to bring final closure to the incident, the Government of Lagos state has planned to embark on a peace walk.
Peace is a fundamental component for sustainable development. A pleasant business environment is central to progress. In disorderly communities, business activities are disturbed due to unreliable social services, which heighten societal problems such as poverty, unemployment, hunger, and inequality. Lagos State is the foremost economic powerhouse of Nigeria. It has been acknowledged that Lagos would be the fifth-largest economy in Africa if it were a country. Therefore, a peaceful Lagos has a direct positive impact for Nigeria and the entire continent.

In view of the above, we, the members of APC in diaspora, throws our weight behind this symbolic gesture for a peace walk, the purpose of which should also promote activities against the proliferation of dangerous rhetoric on social media, imbibing the culture of dialogue as a means of conflict resolution as against destruction of public and private properties. It is only against this background that Lagos will remain the Centre of excellence.
God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Thank you,
Yours faithfully

Literature / I Remembered! [fiction] by Oluwamarc(m): 9:43am On Dec 05, 2021
I remembered! [Fiction]

Like the palm of my hand, I still remember every lines and every strokes, their pale faces and skinny skins everytime they come to classes wearing their rumpled uniforms which did so little to hide the pains etched on their skins like hair pores

I remember Jide, the one who would always come late to class every morning, notorious for always stealing foods from Lunch pack of students while they are at the Assembly ground, he was a son of a Politician and a University Professor for a mum. He once told us that he was taken to the boarding school because his parents thought the experience would make him stronger.

I remember Olumide the artist, he would always begged me to bring him copies of Super-Striker every Monday so he could make replicas by drawing them in his drawing book, I remembered him coming to class one morning, bruised with blood stains smeared all over his white top. Jide would later tell me that Senior Tade had beaten him to a pulp because he refused to hand over the keys to his cupboard which contained his beverages

Senior Tade, the big bully who would always terrorized us all, he stayed in the hostel right from his Junior class till he graduated, His Dad pastored one of the biggest Church in Town, my Mum would always make me listen to him on Sunday evenings whenever he preached on the local T.V Station. I once recalled him bragging about his family, how he was able to raise a godly family in a perverse generation.

Yesterday I saw him, I saw his wedding invite on Facebook, he found for himself a beautiful bride,he seemed happy but deep down within me I wished he didn't get to marry a beautiful lady, I wished all the evils of this world would befall him and ruin his life

I remembered seeing him during one of my trips to the school hostel to give Olumide a copy of Super-Striker after school hours, after checking for him at his room, I couldn't find him,I was about leaving when Mr. Oni saw me and ordered me to carry a broken chair which was lying waste by the hostel gate to the school store, I was about entering the store when I heard cries, it sounded like that of Olumide, I peeped through the window, there I saw Senior Tade on the naked Olumide, I knew what they were doing, I had once saw Bro Taofeek and Aunty Kate doing it at the back of Mama Shade's Kiosk, I never knew it could be done between a boy and a boy.
