Chibexe:

Hello oluwatobi01

sorry for the late response.

If you want to stick to Lecturing, I will advice you do an Msc in biochemistry as someone with an Msc in biochemistry will always have an edge over someone with MSc Environmental toxicology for a lecturing position in biochemistry..

For your second question, Environmental Toxicology is very lucrative as it finds relevance both in the oil and gas sector, government agencies, Pharmacological industry,Research institutes, Waste Management agencies etc.

I hope this helps

Thanks Chibexe, rite now I'm so confused buh I will pray to God Almighty for direction

[quote author=oluwatobi01 post=83930945]Hello guys, I need advice on which of these courses to opt for at M.Sc between Biochemistry, and Environmental Toxicology and Pollution Management.... Though I would love to build a career in environment and I'm HSE(1-3) certified, especially working in the ministry or agency but I aIso love lecturing and I'm scared dat I may not be considered for lecturing because I don't have M.Sc in biochemistry.

So my questions are
(1) can a Msc in Environmental Toxicology and Pollution management b allow to lecture in biochemistry though Toxicology is a branch in biochemistry under environmental biochemistry and

(2) Is the course lucrative in Nigeria, I mean career prospect of this course...

It's not an easy feat to graduate with a 2:1 in Biochemistry with all the pathways and all that. Since you are this good, forget all these "side" courses, focus on a MSc and PhD degree... And this sky would be your starting point. Thank me later.

@Lordlsaac,I have plans on doing master immediately I see a job after my service year that's while I want to utilized my service year judiciously, gather all necessary skills and certification. Take useful advice and be will engineered towards the labour market.

I won't talk much, lemme gv u the hint dt made me to have a strong 2.1(4.06/5.00 in biochemistry-AAUA)...Oya let's go

(1)Know wat you want, know ur self: virtually students in Nigerian public uni doesn't know demselves, dtz y u see dem reading a lot n still end up having 2:2 or third class...See,you shld knw ur self wella,ur strength, wen ur brain take tins maximally n ur mode of learning..

(2)Proper planning prevents poor performance:Wen I was in AAUA bf the beginning of every semester,I wrote the grades of courses reg n GP...I followed it squarely to the book...During tests and exams,I brought it out for motivation...Am always close to the target wrote...There was a semester dt I wrote 4.57 and I had 4.53..U see, gv d brain a target and u will b surprise hw it will bind to the receptor to elicit d physiological response

(3)Laylow from sch social life and social media:..One of the reasons while we can't compare our 1980's graduates to dis present ones z dt,we hv information at out finger tips so we tend to miss use it,imagine queuing in d cyber cafe just to download 5mb for a research work and now we have it at our finger tips, still we didn't gt sense
..
(4)Know ur lecturer: a smart 2:1 graduate,z d one dt knows his lecturers...See lemme tell u sometin, always sit at the front of the class, there's a biochemistry bond dt occur btw lecturers and stu dt sits at d front.. The chemistry z top notch..You will understand better during ur exams..Knowing ur lecturers allow u to predict wat will come out in exams, such stu will do very well even without a text book..Wen I was in sch,I used to gv AOC to my colleagues and z always 70% real..

(5)U see,ur lecture notes, handout and test books r written by doctorates, prof. So for u to understand, always make a summary of everytin in a simple, fair n comprehensible way without missing d key words...Don't just read buh read smartly...

(6)Show me ur friends package:Keep friends dt r top notch in class n ur gp will b on d high side....

(7) Finally, always remember d G-factor...Pray as if u v not read....Buh plz, don't let church activities to affect ur academics (read as if u v not prayed)..

U will achieve success....Bro,I blv in U...
Haa,I don talk too much ooo..Lemme retire to my bed..Cheers...

It has been long since I made a post or reply on nairaland forum buh because of the question you asked,I tink am in a gud position to answer dat.

First and foremost, I studied biochemistry from one of the state universities in south west with a cgpa of 4.06 out of 5.0. As regards ur question, biochemistry is a little bit of mathematics, u get to do some courses in 300 n 400level that requires the knowledge of maths such as biophysical biochemistry, metabolic regulations and the host of odas which involves the calculation of the total ATP in different biochemical compartments. You will b expose to your rate law order with respect to exergonic and endergonic in biologic systems

Biochemistry goes beyond biology and chemistry. It is the study of giant biomolecules which include Carbohydrates, Proteins, Lipids and Fats and the precursors of DNA &RNA( nucleic acids).

You will be taught pathways ranging from the normal glycolytic to the mother pathway of the living system TCA cycle,Pentose Phosphate pathway, the scary salvage and de novo pathway etc...Students with light brains who can't cram will v problem studying this course because BCH lecturers r sadist they want you to know a lot within d shortest time.

As demanding d course is,its nt dt lucrative in Nigeria. Although some industries still nid us like pharmaceutical companies, breweries,Nafdac, nutritional, even in the ministries and in Oil and gas firm..The surest way is to go abroad to practise what u v studied or stay in Nigeria to lectures or collect peanut from the industries mention above...

Hope v helped a little, all z well..
Cheers.....

I studied Biochemistry as a first degree and will soon be through with my Msc in Toxicology and Environmental Biochemistry.

Nothing good in life comes easy. I am working towards becoming an environmentalist. I have been doing some part time work for an environmental consulting firm and it has been challenging.

I have my eyes on Federal Environmental Protection Agency, NOSRDA, states' environmental protection agencies, national and states' emergency management agencies waste management authorities etc. Work for few years and start my own consulting firm.

You need to google the increasing number of projects requiring EIA, ERA and the rest.

Biochemistry is very wide. Do not be discouraged. Take up an option and forge ahead.
