Politics / Northern Elders, Southern Counterparts Reportedly Plan Endorsement Of Atiku by oluwayemi35(m): 11:35am On Jan 30, 2019
- The NEF is to carry out the endorsement in association with the Afenifere, PANDEF, and the Middle Belt leaders -

One of the strong points for Atiku Abubakar ahead of the election is his passion for restructuring The Northern Elders’ Forum (NEF) is reportedly planning to meet with the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), the Middle Belt leaders, the Ohanaeze Ndigbo, and the Afenifere in Abuja with the aim of endorsing Atiku Abubakar.

Vanguard reports that the information was revealed by a source close to the Ohanaeze Ndigbo, who said the Igbo socio-cultural group, Afenifere, PANDEF, and the Middle Belt leaders had earlier agreed to support Ariku ahead of the election on February 16. It was learnt that the choice of Atiku could be hinged on his determination for restructuring as the source believes that President Muhammadu Buhari may not be optimistic enough.

“The leaders of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Afenifere, PANDEF, NEF and the Middle Belt will meet on Sunday to deliberate on the issue. Atiku says he will restructure the country for the nation to move forward and he has the template. “We do not hate President Buhari, but he has not shown any enthusiasm to restructure the country.

The north has realised that even after getting more local governments and states more than the southern part, things are not easy for their people. “They have also realised that despite the huge allocations they get from the states and local governments, the north is not developing because few people are cornering their resources. “We have all agreed to meet in Abuja to deliberate and know who to endorse. Ohanaeze had already done so.

So, our own position is already known. We must restructure this country for the sake of the future generations to come. “President Buhari has not said anything about restructuring the country. Although he set up the el-Rufai committee on restructuring, he is not interested in the project. He has not said anything on restructuring unlike Atiku who is openly committed to it. Atiku has the template on how he will restructure Nigeria and that is why he has our support,” the source reportedly said.

Politics / Countries That Helped Buhari Win Election #Timi Frank Blast Apc Leaders by oluwayemi35(m): 11:19am On Jan 30, 2019

Former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Timi Frank, has said that it would not have been possible for General Muhammadu Buhari to become the president without the intervention of countries like United Kingdom, United Nations and United States of America (USA) among other countries.

Frank, however, called on the international community to ignore the Nigerian presidency and the leaders of the ruling APC, who have threatened both the US and the UK among others, to do everything possible to encourage and help to sustain democracy in Nigeria.

In a statement signed and made available to DAILY POST on Wednesday in Abuja, Frank described a statement credited to President Muhammadu Buhari, where he warned the UK, USA and other countries against interference in the affairs of Nigeria as a “message from the table of an ingrate.”

According to Frank, Buhari wouldn’t have become president today if not for the intervention of international community in 2015 who prevailed on the then government of Goodluck Jonathan to allow free and fair elections.

He said it is surprising that Buhari who praised the efforts of UK, US and others prior to his emergence in 2015 is now asking the same international community to keep quiet in the face of his ”undemocratic and dictatorial tendencies in the country.”

“Before 2015, Buhari did not tell those countries to back up when he was enjoying their support. When he was sick and badly needed treatment, he didn’t threaten them.

”When the country needed ammunition to fight Boko Haram, their interventions were important, when Buhari needed the return of Abacha loot, he went about begging but for a selfish reason, he doesn’t want a foreign intervention now. Of course, the tyrannical tendency in the former dictator wouldn’t allow democratic societies’ influence.”

Frank said it will be difficult for a “dictator like president Buhari, who has lost popularity for re-election and unfortunately surrounded himself with so many arrogant APC leaders to allow the of law reign because rigging the coming election is paramount to them.

“During Buhari military rule in the ’80s, Nigeria became a pariah nation. Nigerian masses suffered unnecessary hardships caused by Buhari and his junta. The Western world imposed bans because of his dictatorship. It took several years of IBB rule and finally 8 years of President Obasanjo civilian administration to reverse Buhari’s blunders.

“Once again, the ground is being set for a repeat of foreign ostracism. History is about to be repeated by this irresponsible APC and Buhari government. APC and Buhari are determined to win at all costs; they careless whether Nigeria is plunged into nationwide crisis or even war.

“Unless Nigerians of goodwill (across party lines) act fast, the likelihood of our downward slide into authoritarianism and constitutional crisis is imminent.”

Frank also urged the international community not to keep quiet especially as the country prepares for the general elections.

Politics / Kaduna Crisis: Police Advise Travellers To Take Alternative Routes by oluwayemi35(m): 1:45pm On Oct 22, 2018
Following recent unrest, the Nigeria Police have advised travellers who intend travelling through Kaduna to consider taking alternative routes.

Police spokesperson, Jimoh Moshood, said this measure is imperative to forestall attack as the police is working to maintain calm in troubled area.

He said this while featuring on Sunrise Daily, a programme on Channels Television Monday morning.

“We advise those who will be passing through Kaduna, because Kaduna is gateway to so many states to the north, top make use of alternative routes. They can by-pass Kaduna metro for now because the 24 hours curfew is only within Kaduna metro and in Kajuru Local Government.

“There are quite a number of alternative routes that can make use of. The announcement has been made since yesterday and we want those who have relatives who want to travel to advise them to make use of alternative routes to by-pass alternative routes.”

Mr Moshood said “adequate security service has been made for those who will be making use of the train service from Abuja to Kaduna and other parts of the country.”

He added that the curfew imposed on Kaduna metropolis will be lifted as soon as normalcy returns.

“Before now, the announcement have been made that there is 24 hours curfew. We so much believe that as soon as normalcy is restored and evaluation of this normalcy is done, the curfew will wind down, if not completely but restricted to some places.”

Earlier on Sunday, there was tension in Kaduna metropolis following the rumour of reprisal violence from the Kasuwar Magani area of the state on Friday.

The Kaduna State Government in reaction imposed a 24-hourcurfew on Kaduna town and its envrions.

At least 55 people were confirmed killed in the Kasuwar Magani violence that had a religious undertone.

PREMIUM TIMES reported how the Kaduna State Government on Friday imposed a 24 hours curfew on Kasuwar Magani.

Many residents of Kaduna metropolis on Sunday rushed indoors as irate youth burnt old tyres along Katsina road, Ibrahim Taiwo road, Lagos Street and Ahmadu Bello Way.

Politics / The Heart Of Atiku Abubakar by oluwayemi35(m): 11:12pm On Oct 11, 2018
I didn’t know him. He didn’t know who I was. But he saw clearly that I was in desperate need of help. A life was at stake. This rare soul, an uncommon fetching symbol of hope intervened and saved a life at the gate of death. It took 26 years for me to unravel this mystery messiah. Come with me on this journey of history.

I still remember that Tuesday morning. It was on October 2, 1990. A day to begin my career in Journalism. It was at TSM, the Sunday Magazine. Founded by a former Nigerian Television Authority, NTA’s imperial reporter and powerful presenter, later Senator, Chris Anyanwu, TSM was edited by a man with all the manifest traits of a genius, Elly Obasi. Ely would later pass on far away in America.

It was in one of my assignments in this awesome magazine that I encountered a US trained business magnate, Peter Eloka Okocha. He did business in Maritime- shipping, Clearing and Forwarding, plus oil and gas.

I was soon to find out that this big man as I referred to him then, was actually from my home town, Ibusa, in Delta State. Having observed him a little closely. I decided to write a special letter to this man. What inspired the decision to write him, I still can’t tell but I obeyed that instinct.

In the said letter dated July 4, 1991, I told him that “something within me tells me loud and clear that having been so successful in business, he might in the future go into politics”. There was therefore the need for him to open his doors a bit wider for our people as he may need them. Note that this was a military era.

The man read my letter and had a good laugh. Two weeks later, precisely on Thursday, July 18, 1991, the business mogul invited me to his Suru-Lere, Lagos office. Inside the restaurant in his office, he told me in terse, crystal, language, “I have no business with politics and will never do”. On a second thought, he added, “but permit me to withdraw the word ‘never’, but I am almost certain I will not go near politics”, he concluded. About 16 years later, it came to pass that you really don’t say ‘never’ as Okocha made a bold attempt at becoming governor of Delta State under the PDP umbrella.

About this time of my epistle to Okocha, my brother, seven years younger than I am, had come visiting. We were quite close; so close he could almost lay down his life for me. Even now that he is a royalty, I dare say he could sacrifice everything for my cause.

On the night of his fifth day with me, he complained casually that he was having a tooth ache. He is a toughie. His pain threshold is unbelievable.

But by the next morning when he woke up, what I saw was the eerie picture of death. His face was badly swollen, almost disfigured, one side of his cheeks bloated, eyes sank in the skull. I broke down in tears; more from helplessness. My salary was just N900.00; yes N900.00. The only addition was the N50.00 the office gave us weekly for transportation to our various assignments. I had less than N220.00 in my entire life. How was I to take my little brother to a dentist. How could I send a message to our parents for rescue. No phone. No internet banking. Delivery by bus would take two to three days.

Even though I was not that Christian devout at the time, I didn’t know when I crashed on my knees with hands spread in supplication to my father in heaven for help. This was just six days after my last visit to Okocha where I had enjoyed a sumptuous meal. Then this silent voice as I was praying asked me persuasively to take my brother to him, that the man would be glad to help. Going back to the man after just six days? He would probably think I so enjoyed the meal I had during the first meeting that I now returned for a possible repeat, a distracting voice cautioned.

I finally obeyed the voice that kept urging me to go, that my plight had no colour of shame.

I was seated with my brother waiting to see Okocha, not quite five minutes after our arrival when a man dressed in white native attire and a white cap entered. He looked every inch accomplished and distinguished. As we greeted him, he turned with a broad hope- inspiring smile. But before he could answer our greeting, he froze and stared at my brother, dumb founded for a second. “My God”, he said, his face, a picture extreme shock. “Wetin happen, what’s wrong with this boy”, he asked in quick succession. “Tooth ache”, I replied. “Ah ah, why did you allow it to get to this point now. Look, this thing can kill,” he warned.

In fleeting seconds, he took a paper from the receptionist, scribbled a little note and having sealed it in an envelope he handed it to me. It was to a dentistry at Ogunlana Drive in Suru-Lere, Lagos. But just as I got to the door, he called me back and asked if I had a phone number. I gave him my office number and he asked about the time he could get me to which I replied, “anytime from 4pm”.

The man did not ask my name or who I had come to see. He didn’t ask of my state of origin or religion’. He didn’t introduce himself either. He just wanted to help a fellow human being in desperate need. My younger brother was treated and his ailment cured. It took only three days before my benefactor called. When I picked the intercom on my desk, the receptionist said the caller just said he was my friend. The young lady only knew it was me because the man described my punk hair which then looked like something carved by a sculptor. “Eh he-e my friend. How is your brother”, his voice rang from the other end. I told him he had been treated and his face had come down, just a mild pain left. He was almost okay. I remember well; he said something like ‘thank God’ in Hausa language. I could feel the relief in his voice. “What kind of man is this, oh my God”, I soliloquized as I reflected on this rare demonstration of altruism.

When I returned to Okocha to narrate God’s intervention in the life of my brother right in his office, he simply said it was fine describing the man as a good friend.

Twenty-six years after, my younger is now His Eminence, The Ikwele of Ibusa, a respected royalty. Now, Okocha had donated an electric transformer to give light to my brother’s own community in Ibusa.

And having heard of this kindness to my brother, I went to thank him at his Ikoyi office. And there I saw his portrait and that of former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar up his wall. It was in the course of our discussion that he told me that the man whose portrait was hanging on the wall, the man I knew for long as Atiku Abubakar, this man he said, was the same man that gave me a note to a dentistry over my brother’s life-threatening tooth ache. It took 26 whopping years for me to come to this soulful realization. My world stood still. Tears never dropped from my eyes when I lost my amazing mum and my dearest friend, my father. But here, on this Tuesday, December 10th 2017, I found tears rolling down my cheeks.

I have chosen to write this piece for the simple reason that if it were today, many would say it was politics, or it was done for political effect.

But for me, that experience spells the heart of Atiku Abubakar — a compassionate Nigerian. I will remain eternally grateful.
