Politics / If Social Media Was Criminalised In Nigeria: What Would You Do? by OmanIman: 4:05pm On Jul 30, 2012
The Senate President, David Mark said recently that social media in Nigeria should be restricted, as Nigerians use social media to criticize their leaders with no opportunity for retraction. Is this morally justified or is it a declaration of war on peoples fundamental human rights, freedom of expression and freedom of information bill?Is this even constitutional? Imagine a world where social media becomes restricted and we cant access sites like Nairaland! What will you do?

Iv observed from comments made that some of these projects made a dicference afterall. But shouldnt there be continuity despite change in Govt since they all have similar objectives?
Politics / Dino Melaye: "Mr. When I Was In The House" by OmanIman: 3:46pm On Jul 28, 2012
Its funny how many of us dont notice trends and are mere pawns in the hands of schemers who have suddenly invaded the social media for one main purpose...to seek political relevance especially towards 2015 cos by then, they would have amassed enough followers and of cos the big wigs will be forced to go to them seeking their support and endorsement and of cos the money never gets to us...the people without whom they wouldnt succeed. That brings me to Dino Melaye whose sudden rise to fame came during the fuel subsidy crisis after a failed comeback to the House of Reps.Suddenly he's at his regular joint "twitter" typing away on his BB as if his life depends on it(well it does cos how would he eat, maintain his flambouyant lifestyle, come 2015 and service his many exotic cars and babes he's been picking up lately on social media?)
Now he's on Sahara Reporters pontificating and slamming Government and talking as if he did a better job when he was in the House. People like Melaye amaze me as they think Nigerians are fools but i beg to differ!D only people allowed to criticize Governmt are those who have no dark past or skeletons in their cupboard. He should first defend the fleet of cars and properties he acquired in abuja B4 raising fire alarm on other people. This towncrier only shouts whenever he's been cut out of a deal and not becos he gives a damn
about us.You think if he had been well settled in the House instead of being suspended he would have exposed a certain speaker? Please lets all be wise and be wary of those behind social media masks who are only pursuing their personnal ambition cos beliv it or not,the race for 2015 has already began.

Politics / The Many "Pet Projects" Of First Ladies In Nigeria by OmanIman: 12:02pm On Jul 26, 2012
I remember Maryam Babaginda’s "Better Life for Rural Women"

Mariam Abacha’s "Family Support Programme"

Stella Obasanjo’s "Child Care Trust"

Turai Yar’dua’s "Women and Youth Empowerment Foundation"

Titi Atiku’s "Women Trafficking and Child Labour Eradication Foundation (WOTCLEF) for war against human trafficking"

Dame Patient Goodluck's "Women For Change Initiative"...

These "Pet Projects" have spanned over a decade and keep changing names, colour and wrapping sheet though the same package.

They have all promised Change, women empowerment, better life, fresh air and everything imaginable.Hwever one begins to wonder what exactly are these programmes all about?

Are they just avenues for First Ladies to seek relevance for their office, buy away time and have something to do besides trying on clothes, bags, shoes and bling-bling,have tea parties with their friends and ladies in waiting or are these projects actually touching and changing the lives of women out there?

Do we know of anyone or woman out there whose life has been positively affected by any of these Pet Projects?Or should these Projects be Scrapped by Government with the backing of the Constitution? What is your take on this?

Politics / Oil Thieves Steal 3m Barrels Of Crude Monthly-chf Of Defence Staff! by OmanIman: 8:32am On Jul 25, 2012
Ascology News

We hope Chief of Defence Staff, Air Vice-Marshall Oluseyi Petinrin was not feeling triumphant when he told the House of Representatives committee probing the oil industry that oil thieves stole only about three million barrels of crude oil monthly. He sounded so.
Petinrin said about 90 million barrels were stolen monthly before Defence Headquarters intervened months back. If he was simply looking at the “savings of 87 million barrels of oil monthly”, he could celebrate. Has he heard that many blame the security agencies for condoning the thefts, which put the economy at peril?
The defence chief must admit that how much oil is stolen remains guesswork. Even if only three million barrels of crude oil were stolen monthly, the magnitude of the theft should not result in the type of posturing that Petinrin brought to the House.
At $75 per barrel, three million barrels of stolen crude cost Nigeria N36 billion monthly. Such huge sums in wrong hands have vast implications. The N34.67 billion the 2012 budget proposed as capital expenditure for the Ministry of Defence – Army, Air Force, Navy – is less than what, from Petinrin submission, thieves steal in one month.
In a year, N432 billion would be lost to the thieves if they keep their ambitions and oil prices remain at $75 per barrel. The money is about 10 per cent of the 2012 budget and almost three times the N149 billion allocated to the Ministry of Works for capital expenditure.
The annual loss to oil thefts can build 14 new bridges across the River Niger at the estimated cost of N30 billion. There is a lot that N432 billion can do for the Nigerian economy. More damage is done to the economy and the security of the country when people acquire huge resources illegally.
The main measure Petinrin proposed for minimising oil theft is the registration of all boats and barges plying Nigerian coastal waters with Defence Headquarters and the Joint Task Force.
According to Petinrin, “the agency of government that is supposed to do certain things has refused to carry out its responsibilities; we decided to take up the challenge towards curbing the menace of illegal bunkering.” Oil thieves benefit from the conflicting roles of security and other agencies that watch our waters. Seized boats are the least challenge for oil thieves. The proceeds of a day’s operations can buy 60 new boats.
Ready markets for stolen crude, huge profits, minimal risks as government ignores the illegality and connivance of security agencies are factors that sustain the thefts.
The biggest threat to the thieves will be a concerted strike at them. Currently, the determination is unavailable.

Politics / MUST READ!!!! "Hon" Femi Gbaja-biamila: Another Crook In The House Of Reps? by OmanIman: 3:44pm On Jul 23, 2012
In recent times, the House of Representative appear to have dominated the print, electronic and social media with fruitless efforts aimed at restoring the lost credibility the House hitherto enjoyed. With the Herman Hembe and Lawan Farouk’s shady deals still fresh, one can say with a sense of hindsight that our representatives may not be honourable as they profess.
For instance, in 2007 the Supreme Court of Georgia in the United States revealed that one Femi Gbaja (Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila), with State bar number 288-330 was suspended from legal practice for 36 months, owing to his corrupt conduct, which saw him defrauding a client of the sum of $25,000, before fleeing to Nigeria to start a political career. Gbaja accepted payment of $25,000 as a personal injury claims and deposited those funds in his attorney trust account in January 2003. He failed to disburse the fund to his client; instead he withdrew the funds, closed his practice and left for Nigeria. Femi who evaded outright debarment by filling a petition for voluntary discipline before a panel led by Chief Justice Leah Ward Sears, has since been at the National Assembly as the Representative of the Surulere Federal Constituency, Lagos State.
Just like any other duplicitous character, Femi Gbaja changed his name to Femi Gbaja-biamila, a name he now bears in the National Assembly.
Some of these questions will provoke a rational mind: why has Gbaja decided to abandon his degree obtained from John Marshall Law School? Why has he not visited the US since his return? Why did he change his original name? Remain glued as more revelations unfold.

Politics / Should GEJ Be Impeached Over Alleged Loan From NNPC Secret Account? by OmanIman: 12:54pm On Jul 18, 2012
"According to NigeriaNewsdesk, SAVE NIGERIA GROUP and Oil Makerters have called for the Impeachment of President JONATHAN over his alleged role in a secret NNPC loan transfer deal of over $244m"

The Question i beg to ask is should',t there be an independent probe into this allegation?Besides is it because of the recent probe into the descrepancies and excesses of the so called Oil Marketers that has made them turn around to make GEJ their scapegoat? As for SNG, we all know its floated by Buhari and Bakare Unholy Alliance so please what else is new apart from their regular mudslinging? Then again, you may say the president is guilty then i would retort saying that if indeed he is,the House of Assembly should probe the allegation. But mind you,the Lawmakers are yet to recover from the FAROUKGATE bribery Scandal. Is there any solution to this madness i ask?

DANGER: Fulani Leave The Village Now - STF

The military says it's time to flush out murderers from Plateau State

The Fulani in troubled villages that will be the target of the military operation say they won't move an inch from the communities
The Federal Government has ordered the military to deploy maximum force to flush out insurgents who have been launching sporadic attacks on villages in Plateau state, killing scores each time they strike.
In compliance with the order, the defence headquarters has today served signal that soldiers would in the days ahead raid locations believed to be hideouts of the suspected criminals launching the attacks and destabilizing the state.
But with the Fulani inhabitants of the four villages that would be the target of the operation threatening not to vacate their communities, a clash is imminent between the cattle breeders and the military.
A statement by the Director of Defence Information, Colonel Mohammed Yusuf, made available to PREMIUM TIMES, said it would be a full-scale military action, and that there might be collateral damage.
He said to avoid “collateral damage”, inhabitants of villages “where these criminal elements use as hideouts should vacate to a safer place where an arrangement is being made for them by the State Government.”
“This temporary relocation is for a while and the villagers will relocate when the operation is completed,” the statement said.
Colonel Mohammed listed the affected villages to include Mahanga, Kakuruk, Kuzen, Maseh and Shong 2, saying they now serve as hideouts for murderers and other criminals.
The residents of a few other villages - Kura-falls, Kuzukand Sharuk, Rim of Gashish and Bachit – he said, should not panic but should be “careful of their movement within the area and avoid places of Military Operations until further notice.
“People are also advised to report any suspicious movement/activities in their areas to security agencies.”

Kobojunkie: There is nothing as annoying as people acting as if all things are new. @Poster, if you don't have a clue on the BokoHaram group, you are best getting yourself some needed education on Google.com. It is free and available for you. This is the information age and ignorance is not bliss, neither is creating a new thread only so you can showcase it.

BokoHaram has killed so many more Muslims than Christians to date. Boko Haram not too long ago killed Shehu's brother, and Boko haram has targeted numerous mosques in the near past. Again, ignorance is not bliss and I urge that rather than pretend the group is faceless, like your President continues to, you at least get down to doing some research of your own.
U obviously fail to get the point! No one is saying muslims have not been victims of this menace as well.Hwevr,if u read it well as any intelligent person shld, then frm d topic,u wld know the main focus is the fact that BH is now targeting politicians and dignitries...really some pple shld have simply completed primary education!SMH shocked
