No fewer than 300 members of the Shiite
sect, including children and women,
were killed and secretly buried by the
Nigeria’s military following a bloody
confrontation in Zaria, Kaduna State
between December 12 and 14, the
Human Rights Watch (HRW) has said.

When Buhari made a dramatic and historic return to political power courtesy of the March 28, 2015 Presidential election in the country, many political observers, especially those who have been following his antecedents argued that for him to make a success of his administration, there must emerge within the fold another Tunde Idiagbon of this time. The people with this school of thought contend that the government would have problem if the President fails to identify an Idiagbon on whom he is to rack power on and who is expected to transform his body language into action while he reigns. Five months after, it’s beginning to seem that those holding this view point might not be wrong after all. From all indications, President Buhari’s administration, after five months cannot be said to have located its bearing yet. There has been series of flip flops and apparent lack of clear-cut direction on relevant issues from this administration to the extent that discerning minds are beginning to be nervous. The continued argument and excuse of clearing the Augean stable, (the so called mess left behind by previous Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) government) has become so over-flogged, now sounds like a broken record and Nigerians are not buying into it any longer. Police detectives attached to the Ondo State Police Command at the weekend discovered a tunnel leading to the banking hall of the United Bank for Africa (UBA) Akure, the state capital. A police detective said: “If we had not discovered this tunnel and the robbery had taken place, it would have been adjudged as the biggest robbery incident in Ondo State!” The tunnel was dug from the fence of United Bank for Africa (UBA), leading into the banking hall, which would have made access into the bank easy. The tunnel already linked into the premises of the bank, but had not quite close to the banking hall before police discovered it. Another police source said: “The gang apparently planned to carry out the bank robbery operation during the weekend, when they were sure, bankers wouldn’t be around. The bankers would have resumed on Monday to discover that all the money in the vault had been carted away!” It was gathered that the tunnel could take up to three persons at a time. Similarly, the back of the fence is an isolated area which would have made the suspects operated unhindered for hours. The Commissioner of Police, Mr Mike Ogbodu, who confirmed the incident, said it was the banks’ surveillance squad that discovered the long tunnel behind the Ado/ Owo Road branch of the bank. His word: “The length of the tunnel, dug from the perimeter fence of the bank, into the premises, was about 10 to 15 meters. The tunnel was apparently prepared to serve as a passage into the bank premises to carry out their nefarious act without being noticed.” Ogbodu further said that shovels, diggers and other tools used for digging were recovered from the scene. Biscuits, cans of soft drinks were also found in the tunnel. The police chief added: “This is a new trend being employed by men of the underworld these days. Consequently, bank managements are advised to be conscious of the happenings in their environment. They should also endeavoured to always remove any barrier that could serve as cover for criminals.” The police boss however said that a six-man armed robbery gang was arrested by the command. Ogbodu said that a truck, loaded with biscuits from Lagos was snatched by the gang and driven to unknown destination. He said the information received showed that the stolen goods were to be sold at Ore. He added: “Two of the suspects, Celestine Okafor and Arinze Orji, were arrested. The two suspects arrested led to the arrest of others, including Uche Sunday, Chibueze Waribe, Obi Ikechuckwu and Kolawole Ipindemi. The stolen items were also recovered.” newtelegraphonline.com/suspected-robbers-dig-tunnel-to-banking-hall/ |

N78bn ‘expired’ rice arrives Nigeria soon Dubious Nigerian importers, in connivance with rice merchants in Thailland, are set to dump contaminated rice from Thailand in Nigeria beginning from this month. Thai Rice Exporters Association declared in March that government had struck preliminary deals to export a total of 760,000 tons from its huge stockpiles to Nigeria and some other African countries in August. The rice would be sold at around $430 a ton, netting the exporting country over N78.32 billion ($325 million). New Telegraph had reported in March this year that Thailand may start auctioning some 14.4 million metric tons of its poor quality rice to Nigeria and other foreign buyers from August. Of the 17 million tons stockpiled, some 14.4 million metric tons are substandard while about 694,000 tons are rotten. The Thailand government had disclosed that only 2.35 million tons were of good quality. Honourary President of the Thai Rice Exporters Association, Chukiat Opaswong, explained that the rice would also be supplied to Mozambique and South Africa. Thailand, the world’s secondlargest rice exporter, currently has about 14.5 million tons of rice in stockpiles built under a generous rice subsidy scheme run by a government that was overthrown by the military in May 2014. The president said that the current military government planned to sell off the rice over two years and above in its warehouses to Nigeria and other countries, although industry observers said that selling so much in such a short period would be difficult. Most of the rice coming to Africa are parboiled. It was revealed in March that the contaminated rice, which is set to flood Nigeria and other African markets, was not suitable for human consumption. Nigeria is one of the major importers of the commodity from that country. But in the latest tender, broken rice from old stocks is sold for $236 per ton. Nigeria’s Foreign Department of Trade has, however, urged government to prosecute those responsible for the poor maintenance of stock. Meanwhile, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has banned foreign exchange for the importation of rice and other items. The CBN Governor, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, noted that the Federal Government spent 2.41 billion dollars on rice importation between January 2012 and May 2015. He said that figures available with the CBN showed that between January 2012 and May 2015, the country had spent over $2.41billion on importation of the commodity http://newtelegraphonline.com/n78bn-expired-rice-arrives-nigeria-soon/ |
