Terrorism is prominent in the north just as Ritual and harvesting of human remains is in the West! It's a Nigeria thing I don't see why you have to point finger and a particular people!
I bet you've never had a word of criticism to make whenever trolls have littered this forum with their "Ebi n pawa" images, yet here you are now pretending to be the voice of fair-mindedness and unity (and badly at that, as the likes of ESN and UGM have made your region just as known for terrorism as the north, while the west's grave-robbers haven't yet descended to IPOB-style cannibalism).

Henry Cardoso truly speaking wasn't the man for the job. Add Wale Edun to it.

If the floating of the Naira isn't working, then end it. Period!
The float has nothing to do with the issues afflicting the economy, which is excessive printing of money to disguise the reality that higher interest rates have caused the cost of servicing debt to go up, and no one (other than the hated IMF) is willing to roll over Nigeria's loans at rates they could get from OECD countries. Ending the float would only worsen the government's financial problems, as the money simply isn't there for a peg, but going back to the old multiple-exchange rates scheme would reintroduce incentives for round-tripping while scaring away what few investors might be considering Nigeria as a destination.

Given Nigeria's parlous finances at the end of Buhari's tenure, there was bound to be massive economic pain no matter who took the reins, and no matter the policies they adopted. Where Tinubu is to be faulted is for taking half-measures that will needlessly stretch out that suffering, like slowly peeling off a plaster instead of ripping it off once and for all. Like Erdogan, Tinubu also seems under the deluded belief that negative low interest rates are "good" for the masses, and he is so controlling that he preferred to bring on as CBN governor a man he could be sure would remain firmly under his thumb.

The result of this mindset is Cardoso's ridiculous refusal to hike rates, which is allowing inflation to run rampant and discouraging long-term investment while skewing the economy as people desperately try to hedge their savings by simply taking their money abroad (worsening the FX shortage), or parking it in assets like land instead of in manufacturing or other more productive targets.

Let's be honest, higher interest rates do hurt in the short term, as they bring a halt to a lot of activities which only seem worthwhile in an environment of "free" money, but the government's current policies are turning what might have been a sharp but short contraction followed by an investment boom, into a long, slow decline and (after several years) an equally slow, lackluster recovery.

Tomorrow Emiliokans will tell you he doesnt give constructive critiscms and proferring solutions.
And how exactly do the following empty generalities constitute "constructive criticism" and a "solution" to anything?
The only way to shore up the value of our currency is to move the country from consumption to production, especially export-led production, and fight corruption, which allows unproductive money to pursue the available supply of foreign currency.

As long as Nigeria remains an unproductive economy and corruption continues unfettered with people in possession of unproductive excess cash, the value of our currency will continue to depreciate.
It's merely pointing out the obvious to say that the Nigerian economy suffers from low productivity. The real question is how to increase said productivity, not merely pointing out the need to do so, and here Peter Obi has nothing to say on the matter. Not once has Obi offered any concrete policy proposals in this direction, just vague moral posturing.

The same is true of his talk of "fighting corruption". Well, duh! Of course corruption is bad! Of course it needs to be fought! But does Obi offer any substantive proposals as to how to do a better job of that than has been the case in Nigeria for the last 60 years? Of course not! Why are we supposed to treat the man as if he were some sort of prophet for simply stating what anyone with eyes can see?

The ironic thing here is that, like the proverbial broken clock which is right twice a day, Peter Obi is actually correct in his criticism of the EFCC's scapegoating of the BDC. Such actions do nothing to solve the underlying causes of Nigeria's runaway inflation (namely loose monetary policy by the CBN and money-printing by the FG), while undermining investor confidence in the government's respect for markets and the rule of law, driving away the very foreign investment the country so badly needs. The tragedy is that Obi, in his unwillingness (or inability) to do more than offer empty but nice-sounding generalities as "constructive" advice, gives no indication that he would have fared any better at tackling Nigeria's problems if he were at the helm. He is like the proverbial backseat-driver who prattles on as if he were Lewis Hamilton, safe in the knowledge that his inflated self-opinion will never be put to the test.

Maybe your eyes glazed over where I said that I couldn't trust Atiku's promises due to his record of abusing power for the sake of self-enrichment? You seem to think I had some sort of duty to promote someone who had repeatedly shown himself untrustworthy by compounding his illegal creation of Intels while in office with the Jennifer Douglas scandal in the USA, and then made things worse by taking back his initial words on Deborah Samuels and talking on TV about "enriching his friends". Newsflash: there is more to supporting a candidate than a manifesto, however attractive. Character matters too, and promises are worthless if those making the promises can't be trusted to keep them.

The difference between you and I is that I understand that the means by which you strive for a goal matters just as much as the ends. There was no way in hell I was going to support any candidates whose supporters routinely resorted to brazen slander and character assassination, especially when their attacks had a clear tribalistic slant.

Whatever Tinubu's failings, it is simply a disgusting lie to call him a drug trafficker or accuse him of having forged his certificate, and if those who opposed him had wanted to be taken seriously by thinking people instead of appealing to the low-IQ section of the populace, they would have been better off sticking to factual arguments and discussing policy proposals, just as I'd suggested from the start. Instead they preferred to spew lie after lie, only to have the nerve to feign shock when some of us reacted with utter disgust.

It would be the height of folly to trust a candidate whose movement is founded on tribal supremacy, smears and religious jingoism, running from church to church while endorsing nonsense about the perils of a "Muslim-Muslim" ticket - especially when said candidate had no track record of showing superior intellect or administrative ability, and an even worse record of corruption than Tinubu. My position throughout this last election was not really in favor of Tinubu but against Peter Obi, who represents everything I despise most in Nigerian politics, and who I am %100 certain would be doing far worse than Tinubu currently is, supposing by some miracle Obi's vanity candidacy had managed to succeed.

Raise $10bn from whom?

Who would be foolish to loan money to an insolvent country?

Exactly. The only two options left to this government are

(i) to start a large-scale privatization program that reduces the cost of government while bringing in badly needed forex.
(ii) to try to squeeze blood from a stone by increasing the tax burden on an already impoverished population.

Since Tinubu isn't making any visible efforts on the first point, it's clear he thinks the solution will be to tax Nigerians more. Unfortunately, most Nigerians are not even close to being as well-off as Lagosians, so this cannot be expected to end well.

very eloquent and polished write up here. Any idea on what can help this our devaluation?
Three things can help, namely

1. Cardoso commits to a much lower rate of inflation (say 5%) and shows he means business by hiking interest rates until they are no longer negative in real terms (that's what Russia's central bank governor, Elvira Nabiullina, did when western sanctions were announced).
2. Tinubu publicly commits to a large-scale, rapid program of privatization, showing he means business about bringing down the FG's spending (and giving the unions reason to think twice about demanding wage hikes that will make the problem worse).
3. Instead of wasting effort on chasing "hoarders" and encouraging an impossible "self-sufficiency" in agriculture, existing restrictions on food imports should be lifted (other than for safety reasons), and import duties slashed, so the masses have access to cheaper food. Even in Nigeria, there are many more buyers of food than there are commercial farmers, so it makes no sense to harm the former for the sake of the latter.

when he made mention of selling the refineries, many people APC started shouting that Atiku is a thief, balabu. Now Tinubu has spent about 3b repairing the refineries and they are still not working, now fg is contemplating selling the refineries, what a waste of public funds.
There was never any doubt in my mind that Atiku's plans were objectively the best of the three - he understands clearly that the Nigerian economy needs to be massively deregulated - but the question (at least as far as I was concerned) was the extent to which Atiku could be trusted to carry out his program in a fair and transparent manner, given his long record of using power to tilt deals in his own favor. That so many people harbored similar doubts as I did is no one's fault but Atiku's own, and Obasanjo's criticism of him wouldn't have stuck if there were no substance to the accusations.

In any case, Atiku's latest effort was doomed once Peter Obi announced his vanity candidacy using the LP as his latest vehicle of self-advancement, thereby taking 90% of the Igbo vote with him. Obi might as well have handed Tinubu the election on a platter, by dividing the anti-APC opposition.

Circling back to Atiku's latest statements, while I give him credit for actually making concrete proposals that can be scrutinised (unlike Obi, who sticks to worthless platitudes), the idea that Tinubu ever had the option of a managed float is pure fantasy, given how low the foreign reserves were (and still are), and how much of the FG's income was already going to debt service. Where exactly would the money to "manage" the float have come from?

The harsh reality is that any winner of the 2023 election would have been forced to make the same decisions at a similarly rapid rate, as the money simply wasn't there to keep going in the same old way. The only alternative to doing so would have been to print money at an even faster rate than Tinubu is currently doing, which would have led to inflation so high that a "mere" 30% annual rate would have seemed something to envy. The frustrating there here is that Atiku understands this quite well, but is happy to peddle lies to curry popularity with the masses. It's such dishonesty that makes it so hard for me to trust any promises Atiku makes.

Maybe they could start by getting rid of most of those useless "staff" so they can free up revenues to pay for policing? Most Nigerian states aren't viable in the first place, and only survive because of the same idiotic system of subsidies which has ruined the country's power generation and oil refining sectors. Best move by the President. State Police is urgently needed since the mess of insecurity is becoming unbearable couple with the population of the country and it's complexity.
Why do all of you imagine that state policing necessarily means that governors should get to treat the police like their personal armies? That's not how things work anywhere else worth emulating! It's as if Nigerians can't conceive of the idea of division of powers, which is why they also seem to think a president must be an elected dictator able to pass laws and set prices as he pleases.

There is absolutely no reason why state police have to be answerable in any way to a governor, and in fact, it would better that they don't, so we don't have a situation where governors deploy them as enforcers of their personal whims. The heads of state police could be directly elected, just as the governors are, and subjected to an oversight committee appointed by state legislators and LGA chairmen. The important thing is that there should be a mechanism for citizens to hold the police accountable, which is what is completely missing right now.

This accountability issue is why local police at the LGA level would be an even better suggestion than state police, as then both the police and the citizens they should be protecting will know each other by name.

Subsidy has little hand in the current inflation . Blame it on the high exchange rate. Tinubu did not shop for the best hands to handle the CBN and the economy as you must be a Yoruba man to get such position . That is why we must blame him for the inflation .
And here we have another Nairalander whose brains have been utterly scrambled by tribalism. If you had left it at saying Cardoso was the wrong man for the job, I would have agreed with you, but you just had to spoil your own argument with tribalistic nonsense like "you must be a Yoruba man to get such position", as if economic expertise were the exclusive preserve of some other group (no doubt, you believe said group to be your own).

The real problem with Cardoso is that he owes Tinubu so much for his rise that his "independence" as CBN governor is in name only, and this would have been the case even if Cardoso had been your "kinsman" born in your own village. Central bank governors have to be willing to make unpopular decisions, and in a country like Nigeria which has weak institutions and a Senate dominated by Tinubu's own party, the only way for a CBN governor to have a strong backbone is to already have a strong reputation established independently of the governing party. Instead Tinubu did what every Nigerian politician does, and surrounded himself with people he felt he could control because they'd be in debt to him. "Tribal" considerations had nothing to do with it, whatever kneejerk tribalists like you might wish to believe.

Where exactly was Tinubu supposed to get the money from to "put in place to cushion the effects"? You already read that the reason Tinubu was forced to (partially) remove the subsidy in the first place was because the FG could no longer afford it! Did you not bother to read where Sanusi said debt servicing was already eating up nearly 100% of government revenues?

The harsh reality is that Nigeria is broke, and international interest rates have skyrocketed since Buhari went on his 8-year borrowing spree. Nobody was going to lend money to Nigeria to squander on a foolish subsidy scheme whose biggest beneficiaries were smugglers and the citizens of other ECOWAS countries. The only other source of funding left without raising taxes is simply to hope you can print more money faster than people can demand higher wages and "palliatives", and this attempt to paper the cracks through printing more money is what is causing the skyrocketing inflation we are seeing right now.

There is no magic wand that could have prevented hard times from befalling Nigerians. If Xi Jinping in China and Joe Biden in the USA can't shield their people from higher interest rates, it isn't the president of a dirt-poor Third-World country who can manage the feat. Nigerians would still be facing hard times right now even if Tinubu and all his cabinet members had Nobel Prizes in economics, and neither Obi nor Atiku could have done any better in providing "palliatives" without accelerating inflation.

If Tinubu is to be faulted, it is for his institution of half-measures that will needlessly prolong this crisis, out of a fear of public backlash. Despite all the moaning and groaning on here, Tinubu has not really abolished the petrol subsidy, he just (temporarily) reduced the amount, and with inflation accelerating, the scale of the subsidy is ballooning once again because petrol prices have not been deregulated. Tinubu has not allowed Cardoso to raise interest rates to a level that will curb inflation and draw foreign investment. Finally, Tinubu has not made any serious effort to reduce the FG's wage bill by launching an ambitious privatization programme. All of these things are vital to restore investor confidence and kickstart growth, and Tinubu knows they are necessary, but he is so paralyzed by fear of even worse public reaction that he has now settled into tinkering here and there instead of giving Nigeria the strong medicine it needs - and yet ignoramuses like you whine endlessly as if he had a magic wand that could painlessly solve all your problems overnight.

I have to hand it to you for even trying. Seeing the lack of even a hint of intelligence in all of the angry replies you get makes me despair for Nigeria as a country. How can one expect progress for a country with so many citizens who couple a bloated sense of entitlement with outlandish rudeness and wilful ignorance? It's not as if what passes for "intellectuals" in this country are any better, given the complete lack of comprehension of even basic economics and finance amongst the whole lot of them (e.g. empty barrels like Farooq Pkerogi).

Politics › Re: CBN Will No Longer Give Ways And Means To FG Until Payment Of Outstanding Debt by omohayek: 11:18pm On Feb 09, 2024
This is a step in the right direction, but Cardoso can't claim to be serious about tackling inflation while targeting 21.4% inflation for 2024. That is an outrageously high value to tolerate, and it will lead to serious economic distortions that will damage an already struggling economy's growth prospects.

It's absurd the lengths to which Cardoso is going to avoid the obvious, unavoidable remedy, namely to raise interest rates. This is the very first thing he should have done upon being appointed, yet so far there hasn't been a word from him in that direction. Cardoso's refusal to hike rates sends precisely the wrong signal to foreign investors, the very people who are needed to supply the USD his bank is so badly in need of. Who in their right minds will bring millions of Dollars into a country whose leaders seem hell-bent on adopting such poorly-though through policies?

It's precisely this sort of timid, counterproductive policy-making that I was worried about when I said at the time of Cardoso's appointment that he was the wrong man for the job. The CBN governor needed to be someone with a deep background in economics and a strong independent streak, willing to apply strong medicine to the economy no matter what political leaders might have preferred. Cardoso has neither of these qualities, so now we are stuck in the same ridiculous situation as we were with Buhari and Emefiele, with a President afraid of public displeasure dictating irrational policies to an "independent" CBN governor too subservient to say anything more than "Yes Sir".

Sadly for Nigerians, the end result will be the same in this case as well - horribly slow economic growth borne out of a misplaced desire to minimize hardship for the masses, which turns what might have been a sharp but short period of pain into a drawn-out, slow-moving car crash.

Not a single even half-economically literate answer in the whole bunch, just lots of wishful thinking masquerading as wisdom. With whose money are you subsidy-reversers planning to operate? Are any of you even aware that more than 80% of FG revenues are already commiitted to servicing the interest on loans, and the severe consequences defaulting would instigate? And anyone thinking a CBN governor can work miracles in 48 hours might as well wish for unicorns jumping over rainbows with pots of gold at their ends, that's how ridiculously fantastical such thinking is.

It's useless answers like these that make it impossible to take most criticism of Tinubu on here seriously. 99% of you moaning and groaning don't have the first clue about what Nigeria's problems really are, not to speak of any meaningful ideas about how to tackle them.

In any case, even if Tinubu lied about his secondary school and other things besides, none of that absolves Peter Obi of his many outright crimes for which there is rock-solid evidence. There is no justification for parking government funds in a bank you own and using said funds to prop up a family business while allowing civil servants to go hungry and roads to go unrepaired - this is criminal conduct of the cruelest and most irresponsible kind. Transporting security vote cash to Lagos is outright theft of government funds. Both of these things would remain true even if Tinubu was himself the master forger in Oluwole.

No, Obidients prefer their thieving politicians to be unambiguously crooked, so rather than merely renting bullion vans (which breaks no laws), they prefer their leaders steal security vote cash and then get nabbed red-handed transporting it in broad daylight to Lagos.

Rather than alleged "certificate forgery" which was denied outright by CSU under oath in an American court, Obidients prefer stone cold, brazen criminality like a governor refusing to pay teachers and doctors for over a year while parking the money allocated for that purpose in a bank he partially owns, and then illegally setting up offshore accounts in a tax haven 4 years into his governorship.

Obidients are such upstanding people that they have no problem inventing allegations of "identity theft" out of whole cloth - in the exact same manner they alleged Buhari was actually "Jubril from Sudan" before they switched from chanting "Biafra" to painting Peter "Pandora" Obi as the second coming of Jesus himself. That the mediocrity of no fixed convictions they were parading as a saint had been busted using government money to prop up a beer company fronted for him by his parents proved no obstacle to Obidients deifying this supposed "graduate" too ashamed to share his own certificate with INEC, even as he was trying to point fingers at a candidate whose American university had already attested to his attendance and graduation.

That's the problem with you Obidients: you fail to understand just how transparent your motivations are, and how badly your hypocritical accusations stink of hypocrisy born of tribalism. Power changes hands regularly, not just between parties, but even between factions within parties. The quality of the leadership which the system throws up may be lacking, but that is as much to do with the electorates themselves (from whose midst the candidates emerge in the first place), who place parochial obsessions about "zoning" and "working" by building white elephants ahead of more down-to-earth matters such as good, affordable schools, clean drinking water and functioning hospitals.

Rule 2.
What are you complaining about? Where's the "abuse", "bullying" "insult/provocation" or "wishing harm" to a tribe that would justify rule 2?

The commenter you're trying to report is only saying the exact same sort of thing so many others on here say when demolitions take place in Lagos - and he's also supplied the exact same amount of evidence as all those other cases. Replacing "Lagos" with "Enugu" doesn't suddenly turn a valid complaint about marginalization into a tribalistic attack. If this particular instance strikes you as ridiculous, maybe you should apply the same standard to all the paranoid commenters who see hidden tribal motives behind every move made by the Lagos state government.

Groom short. Bride short. Their children don enter one chance.
And how exactly do you know both of them are short? I doubt you've met them personally, so are you just going off stupid, outdated stereotypes about "short" Asians? All your nonsense reveals is that you've never been to Japan.

They were all nabbed in Nigeria.
Who is "they", and what does that have to do with the fact that virtually all of the Nigerians arrested for drug-trafficking in South-East Asia or Latin America all hail from the very same region as the ones you're trying to excuse through a ridiculous conspiracy theory about "Tinubu's boys"?

Most drugs busts against Igbos were orchestrated by Tinubu's boys controlling the airport luggage systems that's why he moved FAAN to Lagos. Expect more.
Ridiculous! Were "Tinubu's boys" also to blame for all those nabbed as far afield as India, Pakistan, Brazil, Thailand and the Philippines? What a pathetic attempt at deflection.

Wow she's really pretty
Indeed. Usually, when posts like this say "beautiful", all they really mean is "white", but in this particular case the title is accurate. She'd be considered pretty even by her own countrymen (unlike 99% of the "beautiful" foreign brides posted on Nairaland).
