A disabled man who has lived in the UK for 38 years has been threatened with removal from the UK by the Home Office. Anthony Olubunmi George, 61, came to the UK at the age of 24 in 1986 from Nigeria. He has not left the UK since and has no criminal convictions. In 2019, he had two strokes, which left him with problems with speech and mobility. The Guardian also reported on the case of Nelson Shardey, 74, a newsagent from Merseyside who has lived in the UK since 1977 and was refused indefinite leave to remain by the Home Office despite being in the country for most of his adult life. When George arrived, Margaret Thatcher was prime minister and Rishi Sunak is the ninth to hold office since George has lived in the UK. He has endured many periods of homelessness and says he has lost count of the number of friends who have given him shelter over the years. He says he no longer has any close family in Nigeria. https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/article/2024/may/19/home-office-in-threat-to-deport-disabled-man-to-nigeria-after-38-years-in-uk

The Ogun State Government said on Friday, that it is already working on the rehabilitation of Agbado-Oke Aro-Akute Road. The government was reacting to a video that showed about 500 pastors urging Governor Dapo Abiodun to rehabilitate the road in fulfilment of his re-election pledge. In a statement issued by the state Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Ade Akinsanya, on Friday, the state government affirmed that it had never shirked its responsibilities in the area of road construction, having constructed over 600km of roads since coming on board in 2019. It added that it had already completed half of the Alagbole-Sango Ota Road and that the remaining axis was captured in this year’s budget. It, however, added that the slight delay experienced in executing the project was due to budgetary issues and the spike in the cost of construction materials, saying that the constraints were being addressed. The government also urged residents of the area to fulfil their tax obligations to the state and assist the government in delivering democratic dividends. Akinsanya said: “With respect to completing the project to relieve the pains of our people and infuse a new lease of life into the area, we are on the same page with the clerics captured in the video demanding action on the road. “It is the constitutional responsibility of the government to provide good roads for the people of Ogun State, and it is a fact that the Ogun State government under Prince Dapo Abiodun has invested heavily in roads. “This particular road, Alagbole to Sango Ota, is about 32 km, and the government has already done 16 km out of it. More importantly, it is also captured in the 2024 budget. “However, the budgetary provision based on the reality on the ground, particularly in relation to forex, is inadequate. The cost of asphalt, granite, and other materials has spiked, and so the government is looking for a way of bridging the cost gap. https://newmail-ng.com/ogun-promises-to-complete-agbado-oke-aro-akute-road-after-viral-video/

the mood of the country was for APC and TINUBU to loose the election. but the PDP and OBI split would make it tough to displace an incumbent especially in a multi-chaotic country like nigeria. and i dont even care neither of them, cos they all the same. |
The Islamic police in Nigeria's northern state of Kano arrested 11 Muslims on Tuesday who were seen eating food during the Ramadan fast. Kano has a majority Muslim population, where an Islamic legal system - Sharia - operates alongside secular law. The Islamic police, widely known as Hisbah, carry out searches of eateries and markets every year during Ramadan. The 10 men and one woman were released after swearing an oath that they would not purposely miss a fast again. "We got 11 persons on Tuesday including a lady selling groundnuts who was seen eating from her wares and some persons alerted us," Hisbah spokesman Lawal Fagge told the BBC. "The other 10 were men and were arrested across the city especially close to markets where a lot of activities happen." He added that the search operations would continue but said that non-Muslims were exempt. "We don't arrest non-Muslims because this doesn't concern them and the only time they could be guilty of a crime is when we find out they cook food to sell to Muslims that are supposed to be fasting." Regarding those who were arrested he said that they were freed after promising to start fasting from now on and "for some of them we had to see their relatives or guardians in order to have family monitor them". Just over two decades ago, Sharia was introduced to work alongside secular law in 12 of Nigeria's northern states that all have a majority Muslim population. Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. It has a special significance in Islam. It is during this month that Muslims believe the first verses of the Quran - Islam's holy book - were revealed to the Prophet Muhammad. Fasting is one of the Five Pillars of Islam, which lay the basis for how Muslims are required to live their lives. The fast is observed during daylight hours. This year, Ramadan is expected to last 30 days, with fasting starting on Monday 11 March and predicted to end on Tuesday 9 April. https://www.yahoo.com/news/nigerian-islamic-police-arrest-non-105508948.html

The embattled leader of Haiti, Ariel Henry, has resigned after weeks of mounting chaos in the Caribbean nation, where gangs have been attacking government structures and social order is on the brink of collapse. Henry’s advisor Jean Junior Joseph confirmed the resignation in a statement to CNN, emphasizing that the outgoing prime minister would remain in his role until the formation of a new interim government. Guyana leader and current CARICOM Chairman Irfaan Ali announced late Monday in a press conference flanked by other Caribbean leaders that Henry will resign “upon the establishment of a transitional presidential council and the naming of an interim prime minister.” CARICOM (the Caribbean Community and Common Market), a regional bloc of 25 countries that works on economic integration, security and social development, held a meeting on Haiti in the Jamaican capital of Kingston on Monday, according to the UN. The block added that a transitional council had been set up to pave the way for elections in the country. “We are pleased to announce the commitment to transitional governance arrangement which paves the way for a peaceful transition of power, continuity of governance and action plan for near term security and the road to free and fair elections. It further seeks to assure that Haiti will be governed by the rule of law,” the statement said. https://www.cnn.com/2024/03/11/americas/haiti-pm-ariel-henry-resigns-gang-violence-intl-hnk/index.html

Two men have been indicted on federal charges for blowing up a woman’s home in Richmond Hill, Georgia, and allegedly hatching a strange plot to unleash a python on the home to eat the woman’s daughter. Stephen Glosser and Caleb Kinsey are charged with creating “a plan to kill, intimidate, harass, or injure” their victim, who was identified by Bryan County Sheriff Mark Crowe as a woman who had a previous relationship with one of the two men. Their plot against her allegedly involved shooting arrows at her door, sending dog poop and dead rats, scalping her and blowing up the home, according to a press release from the United States Attorney’s Office in the Southern District of Georgia. They also allegedly plotted to release “a large python into the victim’s home to eat the victim’s daughter.” On Jan. 13, police responded to an explosion at a home in Richmond Hill, but the woman and child were able to escape the house unharmed, according to WJCL. The indictment alleges that Glosser researched and planned a route to the home, and then Kinsey ordered Tannerite online, which they used to build a bomb at Glosser’s home. Tannerite is used to create exploding targets for long range shooting practice, authorities allege. Glosser and Kinsey are both charged with stalking, use of an explosive to commit another felony offense, conspiracy to use an explosive to commit a felony, and possession of an unregistered destructive device, and Kinsey is charged with two additional charges relating to the fraudulent purchase of a firearm. https://www.yahoo.com/news/georgia-men-plotted-large-python-005605599.html

Former Archbishop of Calabar Anglican Diocese, Tunde Adeleye has said unless Nigeria adopts true federalism, the sociopolitical quagmire in the country will persist. Adeleye insisted that full power of autonomy should be given to all the sub-nationals to function without total dependence on the central government. He spoke yesterday evening in response to Rt. Rev. Godfrey Ifeanyichukwu Ekpenisi, Anglican Diocese of Ika, who gave a lecture on the theme, “Recovering Nigeria Through Transformal Leadership”. The Anglican Church had organized the 2nd Birthday Colloquium in honour of Adeleye in Calabar after his retirement two years ago. Adeleye said, “The biggest problem Nigeria is having is the disregard of true federalism. The country should adopt the truest form of federalism, not what is practised now. Each federating unit should have its own police, independent parliament, legal system, school system, control of its resources, etc. “It shouldn’t be compulsory to have schools have the same system. It’s not workable to have people from the South or West posted to the north to do police duties when they’re not familiar with the locals or nooks and crannies. https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/only-true-federalism-can-save-nigeria-archbishop-adeleye/ar-BB1ictVN?rc=1&ocid=winp1taskbar&cvid=54124c3f78c9418ac46af277c1644ebd&ei=13
