Militants from ISIS have overrun an Iraqi military base near Baghdad and executed 300 soldiers, according to a breaking news report from CNN.

While details of the exact location outside Baghdad are unavailable, the news comes after ISIS has been weakened by U.S. airstrikes in the north of the country. It now appears that the group has made gains in the central belt of the country and has an eye fixed on the nation's capital, which it attacked a few days ago as well.

Over the past few weeks, ISIS fighters in the north of Iraq and more recently in the west of Syria have been bombarded by U.S.-led strikes. Strikes in Syria from the U.S. Air Force, Navy and allies, plus Tomahawk missiles, disabled much of the militants' infrastructure and also hit their income-generating oil wells.

United States President Barack Obama expects the campaign in Syria and Iraq against ISIS to last up to three years. The campaign may cost as much as $10 billion.

In the late breaking development concerning the resignation of Attorney General Eric Holder, the mainstream media news outlets failed to report the reason for Holder's departure. For example, although CBS News mentioned that Holder had been the only attorney general in U.S. history to be held in contempt of Congress, the network failed to cite this as a key reason Holder decided to bail. The omission speaks volumes.

Holder's resignation comes on the heels of a ruling today by a federal judge that the contempt of Congress citation against Holder can proceed to the next level. House leaders had been stymied by the refusal of Holder and the Department of Justice (DOJ) to comply with requests for appropriate documents in the ongoing investigations into the Fast and Furious debacle. The House further was thwarted by the refusal of DOJ personnel to cooperate with Congress in the ongoing investigations.

The Obama administration had argued that the courts should stop the contempt citation from moving forward in the courts. Thus, the ruling today is a victory for the U.S. House of Representatives, which had found itself unable to move forward in the Fast and Furious investigation due to stonewalling and the refusal to cooperate on the part of Holder and other top DOJ officials. The ruling, further, is a major setback for Holder and Obama, who had been hiding themselves behind "executive privilege" in refusing to cooperate with Congress.

Judicial Watch had taken the Obama administration to court in order to force the DOJ's hand in turning over the pertinent documents, which it had withheld from Congress. Now that the court has ruled against Holder and Obama, the House Committee can proceed to the next level of its investigation. And Obama and Holder can no longer claim executive privilege in continuing to withhold evidence.

That evidence not only includes the alleged involvement of the very top tier of the Obama administration in authorizing illegal activity but the full account of the circumstances surrounding the murder of U.S. Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry, who was killed with one of the guns that the administration used in the Fast and Furious scandal.

The Examiner reported extensively on Fast and Furious at the time that whistleblowers within the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) came forward to report that the agency had been involved in a massive scheme, planned and coordinated at the very top levels of the Obama administration, to place U.S. guns into the hands of dangerous Mexican drug cartels. The government claims it was "a tracking attempt, a sting operation gone bad."

But whistleblowers and investigative reporters such as David Codrea and Mike Vanderboegh discovered that there was no sting and no attempt to track illegal firearms. Rather, the scheme was implemented in order to attempt to "prove" the false meme of administration officials that "most of the illegal guns used by Mexican drug cartels come from the United States." This meme was to be hammered home as far and wide as possible in order to build support for more restrictive U.S. gun laws. Not only were officials at the top level of the ATF involved in the scheme but so were top officials at the DOJ, Hillary Clinton at the State Department, Janet Napolitano at the Department of Homeland Security, and others, not to mention Obama.

ATF whistleblowers began to notice that no illegal weapons were being recovered in the so-called "sting operation," which led them to do some covert digging around at the agency to discover what, exactly, was going on. What they discovered was widespread corruption, illegal activity, and covert attempts to undercut the gun rights of ordinary citizens.

A week on from the launch of Apple’s new iOS 8 the company’s first update to the new operating system, iOS 8.0.1 arrived, only to be withdrawn almost immediately following complaints of bugs and faults from users.

Version 8.0.1 had been meant to fix several minor faults in iOS 8, but instead brought in some major problems, cutting off calls and shutting down the Touch ID fingerprint recognition system used on the iPhone 5s, 6 and 6 Plus.

The result as described by the Twitter user below rendered the new iPhone more akin to an iPod.


In what is thought to be the first time Apple have recalled their software, a spokesperson from within the company noted: “We have received reports of an issue with the iOS 8.0.1 update. We are actively investigating these reports and will provide information as quickly as we can. In the meantime we have pulled back the iOS 8.0.1 update.”

The news follows more bad luck for Apple after it has been discovered their larger iPhones can easily be bent, kicking off demands for a response from the company from angry users.

Whether a response from Apple on the issue is forthcoming is yet to be seen. As some argue, rival slim-line devices can experience similar problems and it’s more as case of people mistreating their iPhones. This said, it’s been asserted by others that the company has a duty of care to at least make its customers aware of potential issues.

Sporting a distinctive 666 number plate, the gold-plated supercar appears to be the same one which has been turning heads in the French capital over the past few days.

Car enthusiasts have filmed the gold plated vehicle, which features a 6.5-litre V12 engine delivering 692 hp, driving through some of Paris's most exclusive streets.

The most impressive supercars, popular with wealthy playboys and mega-rich Arabs, are usually housed in the Middle East.

But they are often spotted on the streets of European cities over the summer months, when rich Qataris, Saudis, Emiratis and Kuwaitis move away to escape the Middle East's baking mid-summer temperatures.

The vehicles - which act as a magnet for curious tourists and car enthusiasts - are tailor-made versions of famous models from car manufacturers such as Lamborghini, Ferrari, Bugattis and Bentley.

This summer a striking gold Ferrari sitting on Sloane Street in London drew a few admiring glances. Among the other supercars spotted were a £2.5 million premium LaFerrari, £2 million Bugatti Veyron and £700,000 McLarent.

But the gold Lamborghini parked up outside the Plaza Athenee suggests that the supercar summer is not quite over yet.

Last year, a model gold Lamborghini Aventador went on display at a showroom in Dubai to celebrate the manufacturer's 50th birthday.

The gold vehicle had a pricetag of $7.5 million, making it the world's most expensive model car.

Carved out of a 500-kilogram block of solid gold, the finished model contained 25 kilograms of the precious metal. The model was designed by German mechanical engineer Robert Gülpen and sculpted from the same carbon fibre used to make Formula One cars.

Mr Gülpen said: 'I wanted to do what no-one else has done before, to build a model car that is an "icon within an icon".

'I wanted to create a tribute to the legend of the automobile.'

The 1:8 scale replica of the Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4 was just a prototype - for an even more extravagant model that will be cast from a block of solid gold.

Picking up an iPhone 6 Plus from my local Apple Store this morning. Like most people, I hadn’t seen it ‘in the flesh’ before I reserved it (let alone before I paid for it) but I thought it was notable enough a device to spend some quality time with over the next year, seeing how Apple and its ecosystem of developers adapt to the phablet form factor.

I’m taking the 6 Plus on a European road trip (well, an air and rail trip really) next week where I’ll try to make it my only device, replacing even my laptop. But for now I thought it was worth sharing the intial thoughts when I opened the box, set the phone up and started to use it. If you’re an iPhone owner wary about upgrading to the 6 Plus, read on.

Having never owned a phablet before (my Nexus 5 with its 4.95-inch display is the closest I’ve got), I was honestly a little wary that I’d get instant buyer’s remorse and pine for a smaller device, but here’s what actually happened…

As soon as I took the iPhone 6 Plus out of its box, I compared it to my Nexus 5, which fits comfortably in my pockets. For all the people talking about how ‘enormous’ the 6 Plus is, it’s really not that big.

Next I held it in my hands. Although my hands aren’t small, I wouldnt say they were enormous either and the 6 Plus is comfortable for me to hold in one hand.

I can even type one-handed and in initial tests, it actually feels just as comfortable to do so as on the iPhone 5s with its much narrower display. In fact, as I don’t have to bend my thumb as much, it’s maybe a little more comfortable.

I don’t think people with small hands, like our own Jackie Dove, will be quite so happy, but I can’t see the 6 Plus forcing me to change my routines at all.

I’ve seen the iPhone 6 Plus described as “a computer” rather than a smartphone. I wouldn’t go that far on first impressions, but it’s a happy medium between a normal iPhone and an iPad. I’m not convinced you’d need both (even a full-size iPad) unless you have very specialist apps you need the extra screen space for or you’re using an iPad as a laptop replacement.

The display is beautifully crisp and while apps that haven’t been reworked to take advantage of the space yet have a very slight ‘fuzz’ to them, it’s not a problem at all, and they’re perfectly usable. In fact, the only thing I’m not immediately comfortable with is the repositioned power button, on the right-hand side of the device, but that’s only because I’m used to reaching to the top on my old 5s. The button’s new location makes a lot of sense for this form factor.
