Politics / FG Blames Late Yar’adua On ASUU’s Continuous Strike by onlykay(m): 4:49pm On Nov 07, 2018
The federal government on Monday accused the administration of late president, Umaru Yar’Adua, of making bogus promises to the Academy Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) during the period of oil boom. This is even as it said it did not have the financial power now to meet the demands of the union.
The minister of education, Adamu Adamu, disclosed this while addressing journalist in Abuja. He said the crash in the prices of oil globally has affected the economic fortunes of Nigeria.

This, he explained, had dire consequences on all sectors of the economy, including education.

“Let me begin by saying that the issues necessitating this strike dates back to 2009 when the then government of late President Umaru Musa Yar Adua signed an agreement with the ASUU on funding of the federal universities in the country,” he said.
According to the education minister, the agreement provided for funding of universities to the tune of N1.3 trillion over a period of six years. It is instructive to know that Nigeria was experiencing the oil boom at that time. It was therefore expected that government will be able to meet the terms of agreement.

“However, international oil prices crashed in subsequent years thereby throwing the country into economic hardship. At the inception of this administration, the country’s economic fortunes worsened, nose diving into recession, with dire consequences on all sectors of the economy, including education,” he said.

Mr Adamu said the country just exited recession and is beginning to recover from the consequences of low oil prices.

“If this trend continues, definitely, the education sector will also improve, in other words, the well-being of the education sector and any other sector of the country’s economy is a function of the international oil prices. This is the stack reality for now which all of us must acknowledge and accept.”

The minister appealed to both parents, ASUU and students to exercise restraint in their response to the education sector.

He said the union should be mindful of the fact that other sector of the economy were competing with similar financial needs.

“We must also be mindful that there are other sectors with similar competing needs, if our universities produce graduates, such graduates must work in other sectors of the economy which must also be supported by government,” he said.
ASUU, on Monday, embarked on an indefinite strike after its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held in Akure, Ondo State, on Sunday.

ASUU’s current strike is hinged on delays in implementing the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) the government agreed to in 2017, including to compel government to conclude the renegotiation of other agreements also collectively reached in 2009.

The national president of ASUU, Biodun Ogunyemi, while announcing the commencement of the strike, re-echoed the insincerity of government in meeting their demands.

“Having waited patiently for action and meaningful negotiation with reasonable men, using the principle of collective bargaining, ASUU, at its NEC meeting of 3rd and 4th November 2018, at the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), resolved to resume the nationwide strike action it suspended in September 2017, with immediate effect.

“This strike will be total comprehensive and indefinite. Our members shall withdraw their services until government fully implement(s) all outstanding issues as contained in the MOA of 2017, and concludes the renegotiation of the 2009 agreements.

“We have today, been subjected to 20 years of continued re-colonization under alleged democracy,” he said, alleging that all that the ruling circle have been doing is regrouping themselves in the various factions they call political parties.

The ASUU president noted the release of a paltry N20 billion revitalisation fund, despite the fact that the same government released N1.3 trillion to a distressed bank recently.

Mr Ogunyemi also highlighted that the government was not interested in public universities as the children of the top politicians and rich men in the society patronised private universities at the detriment of public institutions.

Travel / The World’s 20 Most Dangerous Countries For Foreigners by onlykay(m): 3:33pm On Nov 01, 2018
The World’s Most Dangerous Countries for Foreigners
Traveling is often referred to as the only thing you can buy that makes you richer. But it comes with a lot of risks. Many destinations boast thrilling adventure opportunities but hide precarious personal safety conditions. The following list is based on the World Economic Forum’s Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report for 2017. It analyzed the state of the tourism sector and travel in 136 countries

1. Colombia
Demonstrations and protests occur often, especially in Bogota. The Department of State advises people to exercise increased caution due to crime and terrorism. Violent crime, such as homicide, assault, and armed robbery, is common. Organized criminal activities, such as extortion, robbery, and kidnapping for ransom, are widespread. The South American nation has long had a reputation for high crime rates largely due to gang wars.

2. Yemen
People are advised not travel to Yemen due to military conflict, terrorism, civil unrest. Rebel groups target and detain U.S. citizens, according to the Department of State. Al-Qaeda is also active in the country. Land mines and air strikes are a common problem. There is also lack of basic necessities such as water and medicine.

3. El Salvador
Crime is at critical levels in El Salvador. Violence is unpredictable and the victims are often targets of opportunity, OSAC says. Mugging and gang activity are a major concern. Armed robberies of climbers and hikers in El Salvador’s national parks have also been reported. The security situation is so bad that the Peace Corps suspended its program in the country.

4. Pakistan
Pakistan continues to experience significant terrorist violence, including sectarian attacks. Foreign and indigenous terrorist groups often resort to kidnapping for ransom. Religious conflict has been a problem for years. What also contributes to Pakistan’s low safety ranking are raging militancy and deteriorating law and order.

5. Nigeria
Nigeria is a dollar-friendly country but tourists are asked to reconsider going there. Reconsider travel to Nigeria due to crime, terrorism, and piracy, the Department of State says. Armed robbery, assault, carjacking, kidnapping, and rape are common. Terrorists continue plotting possible attacks in Nigeria. The country is also on the list of the world’s most dangerous places to drive.

6. Venezuela
Venezuela has becomes a dangerous place over the last couple of years largely due to political instability, which is due to the dire economic state of the country. Violent crime is pervasive, both in the capital Caracas and throughout the country. Country-wide shortages of food, water, medicine, electricity, and other basic goods have led to violence and looting.

7. Egypt
The Arab Spring has been over for a long time now, but the unrest is ongoing. The danger comes from ISIS and other extremist groups. They pose a serious threat to public venues throughout the country and that includes tourist sites. People are advised not to travel to the Sinai Peninsula, the Western Desert and to Egyptian border areas due to terrorism and military zones.

8. Kenya
Kenya is on the bucket list of almost every adventurous traveler, at least it should be. The travel advisory is at Level 2 – Exercise Increase Caution, according to the State Department. The threat of terrorist attacks is high in Nairobi, the capital, even though many sites outside the city are attacked. Armed carjacking, mugging, home invasion, and kidnapping can occur at any time

9. Honduras
Honduras is one of the most beautiful countries in Central America but the level of crime and violence remains high. The country has one of the highest murder rates in the world. Homicide and armed robbery are common. Gang activity, extortion, violent street crime, rape and human trafficking are widespread. San Pedro Sula is the most violence city on Earth with 169 murders per 100,000 people, according to a Mexican study. This is more than three per day.

10. Ukraine
Fighting between Ukrainian forces and Russian-backed armed separatists is common, especially in the Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts and Crimea. Crime targeting foreigners and property is common. Sometimes attacks are racially motivated. Be alert to the possibility of street crime and petty theft, which is on the increase in Kyiv, according to the British government. Violent demonstrations regularly occur.

11. Philippines
Crime is a significant concern in urban areas with theft, physical assault and robbery being most common crimes reported to local authorities last year, according to OSAC. Several militant groups see kidnap-for-ransom as way to fund their operations, and foreigners are often targeted. Crimes related to methamphetamine productions and distributions are also a concern. Do not travel to the Sulu Archipelago or to Marawi City in Mindanao due to crime, terrorism and civil unrest.

12. Lebanon
The security situation in the country is unpredictable at best. Threats of terrorism, armed clashes, kidnapping, and outbreaks of violence, especially near Lebanon’s borders with Syria and Israel are recurring. There’s a heightened risk of terrorism against aviation. Violent extremist groups operate in Lebanon, including Hezbollah and ISIS. Don’t travel to or near refugee settlements due to potential for armed conflict.

13. Mali
The level of crime is critical, according to the State Department. Violent crime, such as kidnapping and armed robbery, is common in the regions of northern and central Mali. These are a particular concern during local holidays and seasonal events in Bamako, its suburbs, and Mali’s southern regions. Terrorist and armed groups continue plotting kidnappings and attacks, targeting night clubs, hotels, restaurants, places of worship, and other locations frequented by foreigners.

14. Bangladesh
The State Department urges people to exercise increased caution in Bangladesh due to crime and terrorism. The country has a long history of political violence and continuing tension often leads to sporadic protests and demonstrations that can quickly turn violent. Armed robbery, pick pocketing, and purse snatching are also a concern. Don’t go to the capital, Dhaka, and Southeast Bangladesh, including the Chittagong Hill Tracts.

15. Chad
If you decide to go, avoid all travel to the border regions and exercise extreme caution elsewhere in the country. There are minefields along the borders with Libya and Sudan, according to the State Department. Violent extremist organizations in the region, such as Boko Haram and the Islamic State, can cross borders and target Westerners, local security forces, and civilians in the Lake Chad region. Kidnapping for ransom is also a threat.

16. Guatemala
Guatemala has one of the highest violent crime rates in Latin America. Theft and armed robbery in the city are the most common security threats for tourists, especially at night. No area is immune to daytime assaults, according to OSAC. The number of sexual assaults and rapes significantly increased since 2009 and women are not advised to travel alone at any time. Local police may lack the resources to respond effectively to serious criminal incidents, the State Department says.

17. South Africa
South Africa is on many adventurers bucket lists because of epic wildlife spotting opportunities, regal secluded beaches, spectacular parks and reserves, and swimming with sharks. But poverty and political unrest have made the country, especially Cape Town, unsafe. South Africa has a very high level of crime, including rape and murder, according to the UK government. Incidents of vehicle hi-jacking and robbery are common.

18. Jamaica
The post crime rating, according to OSAC, is critical. Crime is a result of many factors – poverty, retribution, drugs, gangs, and politics. Organized crime elements are widespread and very active. Most criminal activity is gang-related. Notoriously high-crime areas of Kingston include Mountain View, Trench Town, Tivoli Gardens, Standpipe, Cassava Piece, Grants Pen, and Arnett Gardens. Don’t go to some areas of Montego Bay due and the Spanish Town due to crime. Sexual assaults occur frequently, even at all-inclusive resorts, according to the State Department.

19. Thailand
Reconsider travel to Yala, Pattani, Narathiwat, and Songkhla provinces due to civil unrest, the State Department says. Periodic violence by a domestic insurgency continues to affect security. Tourists are at risk of death or injury due to the possibility of indiscriminate attacks in public places. Martial law is in force in this region.

20. Democratic Republic of the Congo
The second largest nation in Africa by area is often troubled. That’s why it’s one of the least visited counters in the world. The eastern part of the country is well known for warlords, rebel groups and mineral conflicts. Armed groups, bandits, and some elements of the Congolese armed forces operate in eastern Congo and the three Kasai provinces, according to the State Department.

Politics / Our Beloved Nigeria And Its Currency by onlykay(m): 1:01pm On Jan 01, 2017
This is a new year and we hope for better, prosperous and more peaceful year ahead, but let not forget that there are still some things that was left undone in 2016, let me talk about the report generated from newspapers and reporter about lower denominations in Nigeria. They’re disappearing and we’re not aware, They did a very good research and went ahead to ask question about the low production of our beloved #5, #10, #20, #50.
From there result, they discover that the banks argued that its more profitable to print higher denominations than printing lower ones; there argument is that they print both lower and higher at the same cost. It’s actually the right move from a layman point of view and it a very pretty move. My fathers, mothers, brothers and sisters that understood how this affect the economic will probably shake their heads.
I saw the report and I laughed because as an economist that understood how the economic works, this is actually the problem facing Nigeria and we ignored it. They call it the linchpin,
“Linchpin is a small hole that when you puncture, it will brings down the economic without prior notice.”
Let us ask ourselves this honest question, where re the lower denominations (#5, #10, #20, #50)? For the past 2-4 years now, the amount of lower denominations in circulation is reducing. What do we do about it? Absolutely Nothing and all we do is nag and nag like an unsettled house wife.
INFLATION is the order of the day. This small, insignificant word called inflation can send economic back to the dark ages without any prior warning and our economist specialist re doing everything to increase it.
(In Nigeria) Here is a small scenario, when was the last time #200 was dispensed from the automated teller machine (ATM). Now can you tell me the last time you did not buy or try as much as possible to get lower denominations after collecting your money from the ATM. Whenever you try to get the lower denominations, you re force to buy something, they will tell you no change and all you will say is that, just give it to me because you re badly in need of it.
We started developing this mind set and it becomes a norm in which we follow and observe. We forget lower denominations and decided it’s not useful and at the same time, we forget our economic thrive on it.
The lower denomination is the heart beat of all countries and we as Nigerians re ignorant of that fact.
We need to ask the government to bring back our (#5, #10, #20, #50), You can ask me; what will you buy with it?, but the truth is with the lower denominations in circulation, the prices will be reduced at a very small rate and the prices can be controlled, but I tell you without them, we will soon start buying pure water for #20.
I will shed more light on the scenario that will happen on my next article.
Wishing all Good and Bad Nigerians a very Great Year.

Celebrities / The Top 10 Most Exotic And Expensive Bottled Waters In The World by onlykay(m): 8:47am On Jun 09, 2016
Water........... water ........... water

I was told about this particular water but i didn't believe myself until I have to check it online, believe its real, nothing is expensive for some set of people in this world. check out the list.

1. Acqua di Cristallo Tributo a Modigliani – $60,000(#18000000(#300)) per 750 ml

This is probably the most expensive bottled water in the world. At $60,000 per 750 ml, this ought to quench your thirst and empty your pocket. The water is sourced from either France or Fiji. If you really think about it, this is not really that expensive considering the fact that the bottle is made of solid gold that weighs 24 karats. The bottle was designed by Fernando Altamirano of Tequila Ley fame, the makers of one of the most expensive spirits in the world. He is also credited with the design of the Cognac Dudognon Heritage Henri IV, considered the most expensive cognac bottle in the world. Aside from the solid gold bottle, there were also versions in gold matte, silver, silver matte, crystal and a variety of combinations of all these. The non-solid gold bottles sell for $3,600 dollars. The bottles all come with a leather case. The water also contains 5 milligrams of gold dust.

2. Kona Nigari Water – $402 per 750 ml

The Kona Nigari water is bottled water that is sold in Japan. It is advertised as water that can help you lose weight, reduce stress and improve skin tone and quality. It is actually made of desalinated sea water collected from a couple of thousand feet below the surface of the ocean in an area off the island of Hawaii. In other words, you pay more than 400 bucks to satisfy your thirst while doing the job of a dermatologist, fitness trainer and psychiatrist combined. Maybe, it is not such a bad deal.

3. Fillico – $219 per 750 ml

The bottles are built like a chess piece, specifically that of a king or a queen. And this is fitting because Fillico bottles are topped with gold crowns associated with royalty. This bottled water is produced in Osaka in Japan.

4. Bling H2O – $40 per 750 ml

The only surprise about this bottled water is that it is not priced higher than its suggested retail price of $40. After all, it is named Bling that brings to mind huge jewelry often worn to show off to other people. The bottle is made out of Swarovski crystals. It is also corked like a bottle of champagne. There is no word, however, if it also has the fizz and pop of a freshly opened bottle of champagne. Imagine a day when people would be toasting each other with a glass of Bling, or athletes would douse each other with the contents of Bling after winning a sporting competition.

Health / The World's Deadliest Animal Isn't A Shark Or Even A Human by onlykay(m): 10:52pm On Feb 24, 2016
The world's deadliest creature isn't what you'd expect.

A 2014 graphic from Bill Gates' blog outlined the number of deaths per year related to animals. Scroll down and you'll see the biggest offender — mosquitoes.
Yes, mosquitoes — the pesky bugs that suck up blood and transmit viruses from person to person — are responsible for the most animal-related deaths.

"When it comes to killing humans, no other animal even comes close," Gates noted on the blog.

Malaria by itself is responsible for more than half of mosquito-related deaths, predominantly in sub-Saharan Africa, though that incidence fell by 37% between 2000 and 2015, according to the World Health Organization. Dengue fever, another mosquito-borne disease, has become a leading-cause of hospitalization and death among children in some Asian and Latin-American countries.

And it's not just deaths that mosquitoes are responsible for. The recent spread of the Zika virus in the Americas via mosquito has alerted the world to the impact the pest has. Once infected with Zika, only about 20% of people ever show symptoms, which most commonly include fever, rash, joint pain, and red eyes. One reason why Zika is troubling is because it has been linked with birth defects in babies whose mothers have had Zika symptoms and a neurological condition called Guillain-Barré Syndrome.

While Aedes aegypti has been singled out as the carrier of Zika and dengue, other mosquitoes like those in the Anopheles group carry malaria.

An Anopheles stephensi mosquito obtains a blood meal from a human host through its pointed proboscis in this handout photo

Apart from vaccines, mosquito eradication is one of the best ways to curb the spread of deadly infectious diseases. Then, perhaps, there could be a new deadliest animal.

Business / The Cbn Governor Is Destroying The Naira by onlykay(m): 7:29pm On Feb 01, 2016
I AM NOT A WRITER BUT A CONCERN NIGERIA.

I WANT TO BRING TO THE NOTICE OF THE GENERAL NIGERAL MASSES THAT THE NAIRA IS DEVALUING AT AN ALARMING RATE AND ALL THE CBN GOVERNOR IS DOING IS AIDING THE CAUSE.

YES, WE ALL KNOW THAT THE ECONOMY IS BAD AND WE ARE GOING TOWARDS RECCESSION BUT WHAT HE IS DOING IS ADDING FUEL TO THE FIRE, I MAY HAVE THE NOTION THAT HE WANTS TO HELP BUT TO BE REALISTIC HE HIS ACTUALLY NOT.

HE BROUGHT OUT A POLICY THAT WILL NOT ONLY AID THE DOLLAR GOING UP BUT WILL ALSO DEVALUE NAIRA (HE REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF DOLLAR AND ENCOURAGE THE MALLAM TO INFLATE THE PRICE.)

HE SAID HE WANTS TO BUILD NAIRA BUT HE CANT DO THAT WITH THE CURRENT STATE OF THE ECONOMY. ALL THE POLICY HE HAS CREATED ARE HELPING THE US BECAUSE WE WILL HAVE TO BUY THINGS WITH AT A HIGH PRICE.

HE SAID HE WONT DEVALUE THE NAIRA YET INDIRECTLY THAT IS WHAT HE IS DOING. THE $ AT PARALLEL MARKET IS 300-310 AND OFFICIALLY IS 200. WHEN THE PARALLEL MARKET HITS 500 IS THAT WHEN HE WANTS TO DEVALUE THE NAIRA (YES, IS NOT GOOD TO DEVALUE THE NAIRA BUT WE CAN ALL SEE THE EFFECT OF NOT DOING SO.)

WE ARE SPENDING MORE DOLLAR THAN NAIRA IN THIS COUNTRY AND HE WANTS TO STOP THAT WHICH IS GOOD BUT NOT AT THESE TIME(THERE ARE SEASON AND TIME FOR EVERYTHING) BUT I CAN GUARANTEE THAT HE'S ACTUALLY HELPING SOME PEOPLE TO MAKE MONEY AND HE KNOWS THAT.

CAN HE BOLDLY SAY THAT THE POILCY HE ACTUALLY ADOPTED WORKS FROM THE COUNTRY HE ADOPT IT FROM (NO). THEY ACTUALLY ABANDON THE POLICY WHEN THE POLICY IS AFFECTING THEIR NATION.

A NATION THAT WANT TO TRY SUCH POLICY MUST FIRST HAVE AT LEAST 35% OF WHATEVER THEY ARE IMPORTING, BUT IN NIGERIA WE HAVE LESS THAN 10%.

WE MAY CRY OUT LOUD AND SAY THAT THE ECONOMY IS GETTING WORSE BUT THE ACTUAL PROBLEM IS NOT COMING FROM THE SAID GOVERNMENT BUT FROM THE CBN THAT OUGHT TO BALANCE AND MAINTAIN THE NAIRA BOTH LOCALLY AND INTERNATIONALLY.

WHAT HAS THE POLICY GIVEN US AND WHAT HAS THE POLICY DONE SO FAR.(FROM MY POINT OF VIEW NOTHING)

AM SORRY TO SAY THIS SIR, BUT THERE ARE PEOPLE BEFORE YOU AND THIS IS NIGERIA, PLEASE TRY AND CONTACT THEM AND PUT TWO AND MANY MORE HEADS TOGETHER TO BRING BACK OUR NAIRA. I DO KNOW YOUR INTENTIONS ARE GOOD BUT TRY AND UNDERSTAND THE MASSES BECAUSE WITHOUT US THERE IS NO NIGERIA.

TO ALL NIGERIANS IN GOVERNMENT, PLEASE, DONT LET US MAKE OUR POLICY OR ACTION LIKE A GIRAFFE (A GIRAFFE ACTUALLY EAT FROM THE TOP AND WILL NEVER BEND DOWN TO EAT FROM THE TREE BASE.)
Politics / The Cbn Governor Is Wrong On The New Policy by onlykay(m): 11:30am On Dec 15, 2015
THE CBN GOVERNOR IS WRONG ON THE NEW POLICY
I am not a very good writer but i just want to say my mind because, the people making the policy don’t seems to understand why the currency is not appreciating in value.
The problems we are facing in Nigeria is not just about the Higher ups but from the grass roots. The CBN has been giving out policy that they seems will solve the naira devaluation in the international market but they seems to forget their countries woes, How can your currency appreciate when the only thing you do is to buy other peoples currency all the time, we has a nation did nothing about it. The CBN needs to stop looking at the international market and must start looking at the domestic economy, you can’t use a theory based on US economy to solve Nigeria economy, they are two separate and different economy which needs to be treated differently. The problems we are facing in Nigeria is actually of two stages,
1. The so called domestic banks are not helping issues at all, For instance, have you ever been stranded and you want to withdraw, and the only available currency is 1000 note, can you tell me what will happen? They are pumping the highest currency Nigeria has out every day and they think, it will not affect the economy, why do they think, there are lower denomination of currency all over the world, Have you ever think what happen to Zimbabwe dollars when they keep pumping such currency out. we need to understand that pumping a lot of money(higher denomination) out every day leads to increase in inflation and that’s is the main reason the US economy is in debt, though they claim to be the most powerful nation but look into them and you will see the major roles there financial institutions are playing.

2. What are we exporting? you can’t compete in the international market when all you have to export is couple of commodity that is not even of the highest grade, we’re very blessed in Nigeria in terms of mineral resources and a very good land, hardly will you find a place or land in Nigeria that does not have a small potential of growing a crop, They are just a waste in Nigeria, We have shoes that are made in Aba, that can be traded, why can’t we promote these people and trade there goods in underdeveloped countries.
Other countries like Thailand, Taiwan etc did what they call research and discovered that the world needs some of the things they are producing and they flood the market with it with zero or little profit but as time goes on, when the market is dependent on them, they have the greatest opportunity to increase the price and they make their country happy and their people as a whole.
My Main point is that, Naira can never equals dollars without first tackling the economic from the domestic angle, US will never look at your economy and adjust with it. They make policy that will better US. reducing the number of bureau de change will only decrease the value of the naira because 60% of exchange is done in the Black market

The statements is not be belittle anybody achievement but is to tell them that they are actually looking and acting in the wrong way.
Computers / HTG Explains: Why Do Hard Drives Show The Wrong Capacity In Windows? by onlykay(m): 6:45pm On Nov 04, 2015
If you’ve ever purchased a computer with a hard disk capacity of 500 GB and opened Windows Explorer only to find that its capacity looked more like 440 GB, you may be wondering where all those gigabytes went.

There are several reasons Windows could display the wrong amount of available space, from invisible shadow files, formatting overhead, and hidden recovery partitions to misleading (though technically accurate) storage capacities advertised by hard drive manufacturers.
Why Your Hard Drive Shows Less Space Than Advertised

If you’ve paid attention to hard drives, USB flash drives, and other storage devices, you may have noticed that they always have less space than promised once they’re formatted. The reason for this difference lies in the way hard drive manufacturers advertise their devices, versus the way Windows computers actually use the storage devices. There’s also some overhead required when Windows formats your drive, for the file system and boot data, though in comparison to today’s large hard drives, it’s not a lot.

To a hard disk manufacturer, one KB is 1000 bytes, one MB is 1000 KB, and one GB is 1000 MB. Essentially, if a hard disk is advertised as 500GB, it contains 500 * 1000 * 1000 * 1000 = 500,000,000,000 bytes of space. The hard disk manufacturer thus advertises the disk as a 500 GB hard disk.

However, manufacturers of RAM don’t sell it in even groups of 1000 – they use groups of 1024. When you’re buying memory, a KB is 1024 bytes, a MB is 1024 KB, and a GB is 1024 MB. To work back from the 500,000,000,000 bytes

Keep in mind that the hard drive manufacturers are using the accurate description of the terms–the prefix giga, for instance, means a power of 1000, whereas the correct term for powers of 1024 is gibibyte, though it isn’t often used. Unfortunately, Windows has always calculated hard drives as powers of 1024 while hard drive manufacturers use powers of 1000.

That’s a difference of nearly 35 GB over what the average buyer would be led to believe a hard drive contains. If hard disks were advertised in terms of the amount of space they actually contained when you connected them to your Windows computer, a 1 TB hard drive would be labeled a 931 GB hard drive instead.

Alternatively, Windows could update their UI to use the correct definition of gigabyte–other operating systems, like OS X, have already changed their representation to correctly state the right amount of space.

Phones / Iphone 7 Rumors: New Concept Photos Leaked [VIDEO] by onlykay(m): 4:34pm On Nov 04, 2015
The iPhone 7 has been a hot topic since early 2015. In addition to the bezeless screen, the latest rumors about the phone include that Apple will likely get rid of the current LCD panels used on iPhone and iPad models and replace them with OLED panels supplied by Samsung .

Projected specs of the next generation phone includes an A10 system on a chip (SoC) that will sit at the heart of the smartphone and a super thin frame at 6mm thick. The iPhone 7 might also have a 2K display, an Apple wireless charging puck, front-facing speakers, and an 8MP selfie camera in the front.

The iPhone 7 is also rumored to have a stronger non-metallic casting that will give the iPhone 7 a tough waterproof frame. Going waterproof may be a draw to clumsy iPhone users who have to steer clear of water and new users who previously stayed away from the pricey handsets for fear of damaging it.

Messi and Ronaldo have won the last seven editions of the prestigious individual award between them, the Barcelona talisman claiming the trophy on four occasions and the Portugal international three times.

Ronaldo has emerged victorious in the last two years, but Messi is widely regarded as the favourite to win the award this time around after guiding Barca to the treble in 2014-15.

Nevertheless, Ronaldo has stressed that it would not upset him if he has to settle for second place.

"I don't care if Messi wins the Ballon d'Or. I know that it is not in my hands whether I win this award or not. It all depends on others," Ronaldo told Kicker.

"I have always remained the same over the past eight years of my career. I have always played at a very high level. Name me one other player in the history of the game who has done the same.

"It all depends on small details who wins individual awards and who wins the league or Champions League. I am happy and proud of my career so far. Some people think Messi is the best, others think it's [Andres] Iniesta. I respect other people's opinions.

"But I think I am the best. Everybody should ask himself why you would not want to be the best at what you do. I think this attitude is one of the reasons why I have improved so much throughout my career and why I have achieved so much.

"He who wins the Ballon d’Or deserves all the respect."

The winner of the award will be announced at the FIFA Ballon d'Or gala at the Zurich Kongresshaus on January 11, 2016.

Phones / How Android 6.0 Marshmallow (OS) Will Be Rollout In 2015/2016 by onlykay(m): 4:18pm On Nov 04, 2015
As the first models pre-loaded with Android 6.0 Marshmallow hit the shelves, manufacturers are preparing to update their high-end phones with this new version of Google's mobile operating system.

As for each version of Android that has been released, it will be installed in priority in the Nexus range -- the new handsets (the Nexus 5X and 6P) and older devices (the Nexus 5 and 6 smartphones and Nexus 7 and 9 tablets). The rest will continue to run Android Lollipop.

Aside from the Nexus range, the HTC One A9 is the first smartphone with a built-in version of the latest version of Android, with the HTC Sense skin on top. The HTC One M8, M9 and E9 plus the Desire Eye, 816, 820 and 826 models are also expected to upgrade to Android 6.0 soon.

Motorola is expected to offer an upgrade from Lollipop to Marshmallow soon. The latest generation of the Moto G and the Moto X Style and X Play could be the first to get the new operating system, followed by the older Moto G and X and the Moto E models, although no precise details have been given about when it will happen.

In early 2016, Samsung is likely to be next to offer an Android 6.0 update for its more recent phones, namely the Galaxy Note 4 and 5, the Galaxy S6 range (the classic, Edge and Edge+) and the Galaxy Alpha. As Samsung has not said anything as yet, it is difficult to know if the older phones, such as the Galaxy S5, will also get the upgrade of the latest version of Android at a later date.

Samsung's big rival LG has already said that its various G4 models will be getting an Android 6.0 upgrade. The G3 is likely to follow soon, and perhaps the G2 a little later in 2016.

After that, Sony will probably be the next to roll out Android Marshmallow for most of its handsets, ranging from the Z2 to the more recent Z5 models. Here too, it is difficult for the moment to know if the older models will also upgrade to Android 6.0.

At Huawei, the Mate 8, which is set to launch at the end of November, is expected to be pre-loaded with Android Marshmallow. It is thought that the Ascend Mate 7 and the Mate S will be updated soon. Huawei's subsidiary Honor will also offer Android Marshmallow updates, but most likely not before February 2016.

All these dates may be subject to change as manufacturers reserve the right to change their Android 6.0 updates policy at the last minute.

Computers / Difference Between SSD Hard Drives And HDD Hard Drives by onlykay(m): 5:48pm On Sep 23, 2015
Performance: SSD Wins

Hands down, SSD performance is faster. HDDs have the inescapable overhead of physically scanning disk for reads/writes. Even the fastest 15 RPM HDDs may bottleneck a high-traffic environment. Parallel disk, caching, and lots of extra RAM will certainly help. But eventually the high rate of growth will pull well ahead of the finite ability of HDDs to go faster.

DRAM-based SSD is the faster of the two but NAND is faster than hard drives by a range of 80-87% -- a very narrow range between low-end consumer SSDs and high-end enterprise SSDs. The root of the faster performance lies in how quickly SSDs and HDDs can access and move data: SSDs have no physical tracks or sectors and thus no physical seek limits. The SSD can reach memory addresses much faster than the HDD can move its heads.

The distinction is unavoidable given the nature of IO. In a hard disk array, the storage operating system directs the IO read or write requests to physical disk locations. In response, the platter spins and disk drive heads seek the location to write or read the IO request. Non-contiguous writes multiply the problem and latency is the result.

In contrast, SSDs are the fix to HDDs in high IO environments, particularly in Tier 0, high IO Tier 1 databases, and caching technologies. Since SSDs have no mechanical movement they accelerate IO requests far faster than even the fastest HDD.

Reliability: HDD Scores Points

Performance may be a slam dunk but reliability is not. Granted that SSD’s physical reliability in hostile environments is clearly better than HDDs given their lack of mechanical parts. SSDs will survive extreme cold and heat, drops, and multiple G’s. HDDs… not so much.

However, few data centers will experience rocket liftoffs or sub-freezing temperatures, and SSDs have their own unique stress points and failures. Solid state architecture avoids the same type of hardware failures as the hard drive: there are no heads to misalign or spindles to wear out. But SSDs still have physical components that fail such as transistors and capacitors. Firmware fails too, and wayward electrons can cause real problems. And in the case of a DRAM SSD, the capacitors will quickly fail in a power loss. Unless IT has taken steps to protect stored data, that data is gone.

Wear and tear over time also enters the picture. As an SSD ages its performance slows. The processor must read, modify, erase and write increasing amounts of data. Eventually memory cells wear out. Cheaper consumer TLC is generally relegated to consumer devices and may wear out more quickly because it stores more data on a reduced area. (Thus goes the theory; studies do not always bear it out.)

For example, since the MLC stores multiple bits (electronic charges) per cell instead of SLC’s one bit, you would expect MLC SSDs to have a higher failure rate. (MLC NAND is usually two bits per cell but Samsung has introduced a three-bit MLC.) However, as yet there is no clear result that one-bit-per-cell SLC is more reliable than MLC. Part of the reason may be that newer and denser SSDS, often termed enterprise MLC (eMLC), has more mature controllers and better error checking processes.

So are SSDS more or less reliable than HDDs? It’s hard to say with certainty since HDD and SSD manufacturers may overstate reliability. (There’s a newsflash.) Take HDD vendors and reported disk failure rates. Understandably, HDD vendors are sensitive to disk failure numbers. When they share failure rates at all, they report the lowest possible numbers as the AFR, annualized (verifiable) failure rates. This number is based on the vendor’s verification of failures: i.e., attributable to the disk itself. Not environmental factors, not application interface problems, not controller errors: only the disk drive. Fair enough in a limited sort of way, although IT is only going to care that their drive isn’t working; verified or not. General AFR rates for disk-only failures run between .55% and .90%.

However, what the HDD manufacturers do not report is the number of under-warranty disk replacements each year, or ARR – annualized rates of return. If you substitute these numbers for reported drive failures, you get a different story. We don’t need to know why these warrantied drives failed, only that they did. These rates range much, much higher from about 0.5% to as high as 13.5%.
Now, in practice those higher percentages are not earth shattering. Most modern storage has redundant technology that minimizes data damage from a failed disk and allows hot replacements. But when you are talking about drive reliability, clearly that number is worth talking about.

Again, small blame to the HDD vendors for putting their best foot forward. No one really expects them to publish reams of data on how often their products fail… especially since the SSD vendors do the same thing. And on the whole, HDDs tend to fail more gracefully in that there may be more warning than a suddenly failing SSD. This does not negate the huge performance advantages of SSD but does give one pause.
SSD’s Reliability Failures

Some SSD failures are common to any storage environment, but they do tend to have different causes than HDD failures. Common points of failure include:
Bit errors: Random data bits stored to cells, although it sounds much more impressive to say that the electrons leaked.

· Flying or shorn writes: Correct writes written in the wrong location, or truncated writes due to power loss.

· Unserializability: A hard-to-pronounce term that means writes are recorded in the wrong order.

· Firmware: Ah, firmware. Firmware fails, corrupts, or upgrades improperly throughout the computing universe: SSD firmware is no exception.

· Electronic failures: In spite of no moving parts, physical components like chips and transistors fail, taking the SSD down right along with it.

· Power outages: DRAM SSDs have volatile memory and will lose data if they lack a battery power supply. NAND SSDs are also subject to damaged file integrity if they are reading/writing during power interruptions.

Improving Reliability

As SSDs mature, manufacturers are improving their reliability processes. Wear leveling is a controller-run process that tracks data movement and component wear across cells, and levels writes and erases across multiple cells to extend the life of the media. Wear leveling maps logical block addresses (LBA) to physical memory addresses. It then either rewrites data to a new block each time (dynamic), or reassigns low usage segments to active writes (static) in order to avoid consistent wear to the same segment of memory. Note that writes are not the only issue: so is deletion. HDDs can write and read from the same sector, and in case of modified data can simply overwrite the sector. SSDs don’t have it this easy: they cannot overwrite but must erase blocks and write to new ones.

Data integrity checks are also crucial to data health. Error correction code (ECC) checks data reads and corrects hardware-based errors to a point. Cyclic Redundancy Check (CRC) checks written data to be sure that it is returned intact to a read request. Address translation guards against location-based errors by verifying that a read is occurring from the correct logical address, while versioning retrieves the current version of data.

Garbage collection helps to reclaim sparsely used blocks. NAND SSD only writes to empty blocks, which will quickly fill up an SSD. The firmware can analyze the cells for partially filled blocks, merge data into new blocks, and erase the old ones to free them up for new writes.

Data redundancy is also a factor. External redundancy of course occurs outside of the SSD with backup, mirroring, replication, and so on. Internal redundancy measures include internal batteries in DRAM SSDs, and striped data parity in NAND flash memory.
So Which Wins, SDD or HDD?

SSDs are clearly faster in performance, and if an HDD vendor argues otherwise then consider the source. However, reliability is an ongoing issue outside of hostile environments. We find that SSD reliability is improving and is commensurate with, or moving slightly ahead of, HDDs. SSD warranties have stretched from 3 to 5 years with highly reliable Intel leading the way. Intel and other top NAND SSD manufacturers like Samsung (at present, the world’s largest NAND developer), Kingston and OCZ are concentrating on SSD reliability by improving controllers, firmware, and troubleshooting processes.

The final score between NAND/DRAM SSDs and HDDs? Costs are growing commensurate. Reliability is about the same. Performance is clearly faster, and should rule the final decision between SSD and HDD. Hard drives will have their place for a long time yet in secondary storage, but I believe that they already lost their edge in high IO computing. For that, look to SSDs.

Computers / How To Choose Between SSD, SSHD And HDD Storage For Your Laptop by onlykay(m): 5:37pm On Sep 23, 2015
Picking the best storage option to upgrade your laptop PC's performance isn't as simple as it appears. Do you need a hard disc drive (HDD), a solid state drive (SSD), or a solid state hybrid drive (SSHD)? There are a number of important factors to consider, and none of the available solutions always provides the best performance in each category. As with most important decisions, you have to choose the option that can best meet your unique needs.

Let's consider some key criteria to help you decide which option is right for you.
Form factor

Without any moving parts, SSD products are the thinnest of the available storage options. They're especially good for thin and light PCs and complex, industrial designs. For standard notebooks, SSDs are available in 5mm and 7mm heights. By comparison, HDDs are available in standard 7mm and 9.5mm designs. SSHDs debuted at 9mm, will be available at 7mm soon, and 5mm designs have been announced for shipment in 2013.

Capacity

HDDs are the workhorses when it comes to sheer capacity and how much data can be stored. SSHD technology also offers maximum capacity points at affordable price points while SSDs are only affordable at lower capacities. High-capacity SSDs are extremely expensive.
Speed

SSDs provide peak performance for booting and high read/write performance to supporting computing that requires enhanced multitasking capabilities. On the other hand, a SSHD can provide near SSD performance for booting, launching, and loading data. HDDs usually provide ample performance for the majority of PC platforms available today.

Price

At a system level, low-capacity SSDs can be affordable in the 32GB to 64GB range. But high-capacity SSDs are very expensive, especially when measured by cost per gigabyte. HDDs provide the lowest cost per gigabyte. SSHDs provide a cost per gigabyte that's just slightly higher than HDDs.

Battery Life

In general, storage will not impact battery life in a laptop computer by more than about 10%. Processor power and LCD really run down the battery. However, SSD is the most power-efficient, and SSHD is a close second because it can spin down more frequently than an HDD.

Reliability

Failure rates on SSD, HDD and SSHD technologies have very similar ratings. SSHD has benefits because it uses both the SSD and HDD portions more efficiently than if they were separate.

Durability

SSDs are viewed as more durable simply because of their solid state design. Without moving parts, they can withstand higher extremes of shock, drop and temperature.

Summary

Thinking through all these criteria may make upgrading laptop storage seem like a tough decision. But perhaps it all comes down to cost-effectiveness: How can you get maximum capacity that's nearly as fast as solid state but fits your wallet better?

Take a closer look at solid state hybrid drives. They probably provide the best combination of performance characteristics to meet your needs.

"President Obama will host Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari at the White House," on July 20, the White House said.

The visit will mark "our support for the Nigerian people following their historic democratic elections and peaceful transfer of power," a statement added.

Obama's administration had faced criticism for not planning to visit Nigeria during a two nation Africa tour, also slated for July.

That trip will take in Kenya and Ethiopia, countries which have held highly questioned elections in recent memory.

May elections in Ethiopia resulted in the ruling party gaining all 546 parliamentary seats.

A presidential visit to Kenya had been put on ice while President Uhuru Kenyatta faced charges -- now suspended -- of crimes against humanity for his role in 2007-2008 post-election violence.

Obama and Buhari themselves will have a packed agenda.

The White House said they would discuss combating Boko Haram militants.

The armies of Nigeria, Chad, Niger and Cameroon have been fighting a joint campaign against Boko Haram for several months, pushing militants out of captured towns and villages.

But village raids continue apace, often resulting in the deaths of dozens of women and children.

Boko Haram has been fighting to establish a hardline Islamic state in northeast Nigeria since 2009.

Obama and Buhari will also discuss Nigeria's economic and political reforms to "unlock its full potential as a regional and global leader."

Education / Re: Top Ten Oldest Secondary School In Nigeria by onlykay(m): 7:12pm On May 22, 2015
Ibadan Grammar School is a Nigerian secondary school located in the city of Ibadan, it was founded in 1913 and is Ibadan's first secondary school. The first principal of the school is Alexander Babatunde Akinyele and among its foundation supporters were many members of the Ibadan Anglican Church including Mr Salami Agbaje. During the school's early years, many of Ibadan's educated elite sent their children there and the education center later became a training ground of some of Ibadan's political entities. During the first 31 years, the school only accepted male students, it became a mixed school starting in 1941.

In the 1950s and 1960s, many students attended the school for their sixth form education and Higher School Certificate, among the students was Adedotun Gbadebo who holds the title of Alake of Egbaland and Margaret Shonekan. Among the school's head includes, Emmanuel Alayande (1948-1968) who has a hall named in his honour at the school's premises.

Celebrities / Read: Yale Universty To Withdraw Honorary Degree From Okonjo-iweala by onlykay(m): 8:37pm On May 21, 2015
According to Sunday Iwalaiye, in his petition stated that Dr Okonjo-Iweala is not deserving of the honorary degree as the Nigerian economy has taken a nose dive since she assumed office as Minister of Finance. A thousand Nigerians have so far signed the petition.

His petition below
"YALE UNIVERSITY GAVE ITS PRESTIGIOUS HONORARY DOCTORATE DEGREE TO AN UNDESERVING NIGERIAN":Ngozi Iweala, the outgoing Nigeria's finance minister was awarded a honorary doctorate degree by Yale University on May 15, 2015.

The citation from the Yale University reads:"Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Doctor of Humane Letters. You are a citizen of your country, your continent, and the world. Shaped by challenging experiences during your childhood in Nigeria, you have made social and economic reform your mission. As Nigeria’s coordinating minister of economic development and minister of finance, you have tackled corruption, created a vision and path to long-term economic stability, and worked to build a culture of transparency. At the World Bank, you made food security a priority and provided policy advice and capital for the world’s poorest countries.

With wisdom, a fierce dedication to doing what is right, and unflagging energy, you have transformed the economic landscape of your nation. We are proud to name you Doctor of Humane Letter" This citation from the Yale University does not reflect nor represent everything that has happened under the watch and the supervision of the Nigerian economy by Ngozi Iweala as the nation's finance minister. There is no tangible evidence of any economic development in Nigeria under the leadership of Ngozi Iweala in all reality. Nigeria's economy is still an oil-dependent economy that is debt and borrowing ridden as well as 100% consuming and importing in nature.

Nigeria's debt profile has risen rapidly under Ngozi Iweala and Nigeria has borrowed over $2 billion in the last four months alone to pay salaries of the federal and state civil servants. Our foreign reserves and excess crude oil accounts have both depleted heavily under Ngozi Iweala. The recurrent expenditures in the federal budgets reached the highest levels which made capital development practically impossible in Nigeria under Ngozi Iweala.

The board of regents of this ivy league school missed it completely by awarding their prestigious honorary doctorate degree to an undeserving Nigerian in all truth, honesty and reality. The Nigeria's economy has remained the same under Ngozi Iweala without any evidence of its diversity from oil.

The Nigerian Naira crashed to its lowest value in its history under Ngozi Iweala. The true picture that Yale University missed is the fact that the economy of Nigeria has almost grounded to its final halt today which will makes its a daunting task for the incoming administration of General Muhammadu Buhari to meet its campaign promises.

The menace of official corruption and financial scandals have both reached their peaks in Nigeria under Ngozi Iweala. A central bank governor was fired for disclosing that $20 billion was missing from the federal coffers and this allegation was investigated in a shady and questionable manner. The oil subsidy scam that cheated Nigeria's tax payers of trillions of Naira was coordinated and supervised by Ngozi Iweala.

The culture of official corruption and state resource mismanagement were both honored, celebrated, protected and defended under the leadership of Ngozi Iweala as the supervising coordinator of the Nigerian economy. To give a honorary doctorate degree to an undeserving Nigerian by this world's reknown university is the biggest slap on the faces of the 180 million Nigerians in 2015. I am using this social medium to appeal to the board of regents of this prestigious university to withdraw this honorary degree that they awarded to this Nigerian immediately and without any further delay for the sake of posterity....
