The All Progressives Congress wishes all Nigerians a happy Valentine’s Day, as they join the rest of the world to mark the Day on Saturday, and urges them to prepare to celebrate their imminent liberation from the PDP-imposed yoke under which they have laboured for many years. In a statement issued in Lagos on Friday by its National Publicity Secretary, Lai Mohammed, the party said but for the insistence of the PDP and the Jonathan Administration that the suffering of Nigerians must be prolonged for another six weeks, the Valentine’s Day, which is a global celebration of love and affection, would have also marked the celebration of freedom from the PDP servitude by all Nigerians. It said, however, that those who orchestrated a needless postponement of the elections have only won a Pyrrhic victory as the delay will only further sweeten the joys of victory over the oppressors of the Nigerian people, over those who have looted the country’s treasury dry and left broken bones and gnashing of teeth in their wake. ”Saturday, Feb. 14th would have been a day of double celebration, of Valentine’s Day and of the liberation of the long-suffering people of Nigeria from the burden imposed on them by a clueless, incompetent and purposeless PDP federal government ”While they could not change Valentine’s Day from Feb. 14th, they have temporarily delayed the celebration of freedom by their orchestrated six-week postponement of the elections. Nigerians should see this as a temporary setback. They should continue to maintain their unwavering enthusiasm for change by getting their PVCs ready to vote out the yoke masters. ”Nigerians must continue to insist that the elections be held as rescheduled and in line with constitutional provisions,” APC said.

DEVELOPMENTS in the foreign exchange market are putting the Central Bank of Nigeria under intense pressure to further devalue the naira. The currency has been experiencing free fall since November 25, 2014 when the CBN Monetary Policy Committee devalued it by eight per cent from 155 to 168 against the United States dollar. Following Saturday’s announcement of the postponement of the general elections by six weeks, the naira on Monday plunged from 188 to 200 against the dollar. The Bankers’ Committee gave the hint of further devaluation on Thursday just as the nation’s External Reserves dropped by $1bn in 12 days. The committee which comprises the Central Bank of Nigeria governor, the deputy governors, chief executive officers of Deposit Money Banks and other stakeholders, said the managers of the economy, including the CBN, were currently seeking a new level to devalue the already battered currency. Members of the committee met for over three hours in Lagos to review developments in the banking sector and the economy, among other issues. The meeting, which was chaired by the CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele, later appointed the Managing Director, Guaranty Trust Bank Plc, Segun Agbaje; Managing Director, FCMB, Ladi Balogun; Managing Director, CitiBank Nigeria, Omar Hafeez; and Director, Banking Supervision, CBN, Tokunbo Martins, to brief the press on some of its deliberations. Agbaje said the currency was going through a period of ‘‘price discovery’’ to determine a new level for the currency. He said, ‘‘where we are now is that oil prices are down. As a country, we are trying to find what level the currency devalues to. There is no central bank in the world that allows a free flow of its currency. What you do is try to find a price discovery and find a rate at which you can live with. I think we are going through that process in Nigeria. That is why at the last MPC meeting, the CBN devalued and also moved the midpoint of the naira. What you are seeing in the interbank market is again some price discovery.” The GTBank boss explained that ‘‘devaluation is not a curse’’, adding that some major currencies of the world had gone through the process in recent times. According to him, no nation allows free flow of its currency. Agbaje said, “I think that on the issue of exchange rate, exchange rates are very emotional things. The reality is that devaluation is not a curse. The Norwegian Krone, which is one of the strongest currencies, devalued by 13 per cent last year. I think about half way through last year, the pound to the dollar was about 1.67; today, it is barely 1.52. So, where we are today is that oil prices are down. “The thing about price discovery is that rates would go up and rates would come down. And so for those who chose to speculate, you run the risk of actually losing money. “So until we find what that rate is, which I believe in my own opinion we are around there now, and I believe that the CBN is also going through that price discovery, when they get there. “Any country that has over $30bn in its reserves is able to defend its currency at a realistic rate. So, I don’t think we have a state of chaos around. I told you about some very strong economies that have gone through some devaluation; so, it is not a curse.” Agbaje also said that the CBN had no plans to change rules regarding the operation of domiciliary accounts. He said, “There will be no change in the operation of domiciliary accounts. The CBN remains committed to the foreign exchange market. There will be free flow of funds into and out of the domiciliary accounts’’. The GTBank boss added that banks’ exposure to the oil and gas sector did not pose any challenge to the banking industry because the CBN had already carried out a stress test on all the banks with oil prices at $50 and $55 per barrel. Balogun also told journalists that despite the fall in oil prices, government revenues last year increased by N75bn. Balogun, who added that about N150bn increase was being expected this year, explained that owing to the structural challenges in the economy, banks would support the government to diversify the economy. According to the FCMB boss, banks will ensure that loans are given to Small and Medium-scale Enteprise operators and people in the agricultural sector. Hafeez, said due to the volatility in the foreign exchange market, the CBN had said that it would continue to meet the liquidity needs of the market, adding that Emefiele had said that the market did not need to panic any longer. Martins said despite the volatility in the foreign exchange market, the country’s banks were still sound, safe and strong. She said the capital adequacy levels, liquidity ratios, profitability, asset quality and other ratios of the banks were all above average and the regulatory minimum. On the banks’ exposure to the oil and gas sector in the light of falling oil prices, Martins said Nigerian banks had one of the highest capital levels in the world, adding that they were safe should the unexpected happen. Emefiele told the CNBC Africa on Thursday that there was “no need to panic” about a slide in the currency, after figures showed that the bank had been burning through more than $110m a day in an attempt to defend the naira. “We are not in the best of times but there’s no need to panic,” he said, ruling out an emergency Monetary Policy Committee meeting. He stated that floating the currency was not an option. Figures on the CBN website on Thursday showed that the foreign exchange reserves fell to $33.4bn as of February 10, a drop of $1bn over the previous 12 days as the CBN sold hard currency to defend the naira. The reserves stood at $34.4bn on January 27, 2015. Meanwhile, reports on Thursday indicated that the naira was likely to continue its fall next week as investors worry over the postponement of the general elections by the Independent National Electoral Commission and its impact on the economy and the country. The naira hit a record low of 206.60 against the dollar on Thursday at the interbank market, and dealers halted electronic trading for the second consecutive day. Dealers had halted trading on Wednesday when the naira hit 204 against the dollar. “Demand remains strong and unless we have large dollar inflows into the market, the local currency will continue to be under pressure,” a dealer said. The CBN has repeatedly sold dollars to support the local currency. It has also been relying on the external reserves to defend the naira. However, other African currencies like the Ghanaian cedi and Kenyan shillings are expected to remain strong next week. Copyright PUNCH. |

Multi-award winning Nigerian Afrobeat musician, singer and songwriter Lagbaja has advised Nigerians on the coming 2015 presidential elections. The 1960-Lagos-state-born musician, who is a Baptist by upbringing, has made some remarks about the President Goodluck Jonathan administration and the coming elections. The Globacom ambassador, popular for his masked-face, has declared that he is ready to exercise his voting rights, unlike some celebrities who have made it known that they won’t vote. Lagbaja, who has received his Permanent Voter’s Card (PVC) after waiting a long time, claimed that the president, who is seeking re-election, does not have the ability to rule the country. He also said that some forces may have pushed President Goodluck Jonathan to seek re-election, since the president was quoted as saying he did not plan to run for a second term. The singer said that he “knows that President Jonathan cannot do this job”. In his own words: “He (Jonathan) really wants to leave now, he does not want a second term, but he cannot say that publicly. He is a hostage of the people pushing him because of them, he cannot simply walk away. So, he has to play along by campaigning for re-election. He really needs your help so that he can leave with dignity, help him by voting him out. Vote Buhari/Osinbajo on February 14.” |
The Speaker of Osun State House of Assembly, Mr. Najeem Salaam, has congratulated Governor Rauf Aregbesola on the affirmation of his victory by the tribunal. The Speaker said in a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Goke Butika, that the lies fabricated against his victory at the August governorship election had been deflated and put to final rest by Justice Elizabeth Ikpejime led tribunal. This congratulatory message came just as the Chairman of the Nigeria Advance Party in the South West, Mr. Tosin Odeyemi, also hailed Aregbesola’s victory. The NAP boss said the affirmation of the governor’s victory showed that his victory in the last poll was genuine and was devoid of malpractices as alleged by Senator Iyiola Omisore. Salaam lauded the courage of the people in standing by the governor who is delivering on his mandate and adding value to governance in all spheres of influence, asserting that the petitioner at the election tribunal himself knew he was playing to the gallery abinitio, having lost 22 out of 30 local government areas including Area Council, Modakeke, at the last poll. However, the top lawmaker has commended Omisore for approaching the election tribunal with a view to seeking redress he purportedly perceived, saying that Omisore’s action was civil and in line with the tradition of democracy, preferable to violence. Salam then thumbed up for Aregbesola for his tolerance and democratic tendencies which subscribed to latitude given for all manners of opposition to question his leadership, hinting that the state had raised the bar of democratic tradition with the civility of the governor. |

The Twitter handle, Alurwa Alwuthqa, was registered last week in a manner similar to the Middle East insurgency group, Islamic State (IS). One of the sect’s first activities on the account was to announce its capture of Monguno and display pictures of child jihadists.

African Independent Television (AIT) has suddenly removed a popular online poll where the All Progressives Congress party candidate, Muhammadu Buhari, was resoundingly beating President Goodluck Jonathan. Buhari’s lead in the poll was despite the president’s shelling out of N5 million per daily showing of his sponsored documentary against Buhari that was being repeatedly shown on AIT stations across Nigeria, and online. Earlier on Tuesday, SaharaReporters published a screenshot of the poll, which at that time showed Buhari well ahead by over 76%. As the day wore on, the poll saw Buhari’s lead rise to 79%. It was then swiftly taken down, AIT replacing the page with a claim that the page was “under maintenance.” That behavior was reminiscent of a similar incident last year by Mr. Jonathan’s social media aide, Reno Omokri, who is Mr. Jonathan’s social media aide. In an effort to provide a rebuttal to a SaharaReporters poll showing Mr. Jonathan being handsomely defeated by General Buhari, Omokri manipulated a poll he had set up, and then hurriedly shut it down with Jonathan ahead of Buhari by 1%. AIT did not say whether its poll page would return after its ‘maintenance’, but some users had noted earlier that the TV station was allowing multiple voting for President Jonathan. That was subsequently corrected, a fact that was also noted by users, following which Buhari again regained the lead. AIT then suddenly went into ‘maintenance’. Source:- Sahara Reporters

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, has said Jaykay Pharmacy Limited, owned by the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party owes the Lagos State Government about N1.6m land use charge. According to him, the land use charge, which the company should have remitted to the office of the Lagos State Internal Revenue Service, had accrued for four consecutive years. Speaking at the 8th Annual Lagos State Taxation Stakeholders Conference on Wednesday, Fashola said the free education and free health care provided for Lagos residents were funded from the tax. The governor said, “Jaykay Pharmacy has not paid land use charge for 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012. It paid in 2013 and 2014. It owes this government N1, 629, 064.62. How many books will it have bought in the schools? How many drugs will it have provided in the hospital? I will advise you that you avoid inexperience. I will advise you that you avoid experiment.” He advised the citizens not to accept promises of tax exemption from politicians because it would not sustain the state. The governor recalled that he predicted that oil revenue, which the country largely depended on, was not sustainable when he assumed office, adding that Lagos State prepared ahead of the oil plunge by ensuring total compliance with tax remittance. Fashola added, “Inspite of the oil drop, we paid salaries in December. And this month salaries have already been credited. The Federal Government and some states have not paid since October while some have not paid for eight months. But because we took our destiny in our hands, we wear our tax compliance as a badge of honour. Despite the economic problems, this state will continue to survive. “Even the umbrella party were criticising us that we are taxing people excessively. They forgot that the law by which we collect the income tax, they amended it. They cannot manoeuvre us. We are always ahead of them.” He added that the Federal Government was seven years behind Lagos State in taking proactive measures to sustain the economy by increasing revenue through tax generation and collection. The Chairman, LIRS, Mr. Babatunde Fowler, said the agency had recorded 96 per cent voluntary tax compliance in the organised private sector under the umbrella body of the Nigeria Employers Consultative Association, a record, which he explained, showed the success of the initiative. |

SATURDAY MORNING Storm I need your help up here to make the atmosphere hazy, that was Logan (wolverine) calling out to storm for an undercover. Scott and the iceman are on the other side of the battle having their way into the enemy’s camp but don’t be surprise this ain’t about the X-MEN going out against the anti-mutant society or the X-MEN going rebellious against other mutants in order to protect the world. . . This is a love story. . . Storm has her eyeballs turned white already gathering strength in the atmosphere to cause a stormy weather, the unique power she possesses aside from being a strong fighter. There goes the wolverine with his adamantium metal claws reaching out to strike anyone who stands on his way as he forges forward towards the camp where the beast-like tyrant in custody of me is. It was quite easy for him to walk through without getting noticed because storm still has the weather under control. There I was chained like the beauty in the movie ‘Clash Of The Titans’ was chained to be devoured by those evil creatures for sacrifice just that this time I’m in the inner chamber of the camp with the ugly beast acting as a grobian by mauling my precious silky chocolate skin body and he is just beasty in soul not in looks because he can easily be use to take a role for Schwarzenegger with his blond hair that always seem to be out of place. I keep hoping this will all end soon that Logan will show up in time to rescue me from this callous beast that keep inflicting wound on me for every kiss and smooch and I wonder why fate brought him my way. Suddenly, I saw Logan silenced me not to make the beast aware of his presence and that minute seems to look like a film trick to me because it took not much effort for wolverine to pierce his sides with the claws and that brought the end to my horrors. Alas! My feeble weak body was saved and I was gently carried like a new born baby, I can’t envision how much I miss his gentle touch and feel his heartbeats under that metal bones while I rest my head on it while in his arms and the rapture I get lost in when I feel his rough lips turn soft on mine with his passionate kiss in contrast to the lip-mauling of the beast from earlier. I traced my lip outline with the tip of my fingers as he carried me out to where the other X-MEN awaits us in the jet with Scott & Storm to be the pilot. * * * Beep Beep Beep!!! (alarm). The sky is clear, a new day is here. . . Its a Saturday morning I need to get things done. I picked up my bedside mirror and unconsciously traced my lip outline with the tip of my fingers and the memories of the kiss still lingers in my brain then i figured i must have been dreaming all night . . . https://funmibifayemi./2015/01/24/saturday-morning/ |

Report by Saharareporters, Plans by President Goodluck Jonathan and his team to scuttle the general elections scheduled for February have come to light, with National Security Adviser Sambo Dasuki openly calling for postponement of the elections. Sambo spoke at a Chattam House lecture in London, offering the excuse that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has not distributed Permanent Voters Cards across the country as was expected. SaharaReporters had reported several months ago that President Goodluck Jonathan was reluctant to hold national elections because his popularity had dwindled considerably and he feared losing the election. In the last few days, as the popularity of General Muhammadu Buhari for the presidency has grown, Mr. Jonathan has spent vast sums of money mobilizing people to call for the postponement of the elections. INEC spokesperson, Kayode Idowu told SaharaReporters today that INEC was not aware of Col. Dasuki’s suggestion, and that the elections will hold as scheduled. Several sources connected to the presidency told SaharaReporters that President Jonathan wants the elections to be postponed for at least six months, a period that will enable him to appoint a new INEC chairman of his liking to oversee the elections. Professor Attahiru Jega’s tenure expires in July 2015. With Jega out of the way, Jonathan would appoint another INEC chairman who would further postponement of the election. SaharaReporters sources stated that President Jonathan is seriously considering an “Interim Government of National Unity” that would elongate his tenure till 2017. That would mean he spends eight years in power as President, the equivalent of two terms. In 2011 as he assumed office, his first effort was to call for a new six-year term arrangement, which was shot down by Nigerians. He also recently attempted to smuggle in a new constitution by the back door through the National Conference. |
