Former Haitian leader, Jean-Claude "Baby Doc" Duvalier, died October 4 of a heart attack Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Duvalier was 19 when he became "president-for- life", succeeding his father, the infamous Francois "Papa Doc" Duvalier, in 1971. Accused of massive human rights abuses, oppression, corruption, and violence at the hands of his aggressive personal army, his rule was ended in a 1986 uprising, which liberated Haiti finally from one party rule. He was exiled to France, only returning to Haiti in 2011 as a gesture of goodwill to the Haitian people following a critical earthquake the year before. Duvalier was arrested, however, but released after the case against him stalled. He died at 63. http://www.pijango..com/2014/10/former-haitian-leader-jean-claude-baby.html?m=1

Nigeria’s former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, is set to go back to school. He will be attempting to get a higher degree in Christian Theology. On Tuesday, Obasanjo will formally enrol as a graduate student at the headquarters of the National Open University of Nigeria in Lagos. In 2009, two years after he left office, Obasanjo obtained a Post Graduate Diploma in 2009. He will now be working towards a doctorate degree, beginning first with a Masters degree. Premium Times reached out to the former president who confirmed the news. He said it was important for him to make some commitments towards achieving his aspirations in life. “I’m going back to school because I have to have something to aspire to in every endeavour of life, I always aspire to something new in my farm. I do that in my international activities. I do it in my writing. I do it in the improvement of my academic work which helps to sharpen my brain and strengthen my faith.” When asked how he was going to cope combining his studies with his tight international engagements, Mr. Obasanjo said he would take advantage of the flexibility of the National Open University’s system. “Fortunately, the Open University is flexible enough and I will definitely be able to cope. I was able to cope when I did the Post Graduate. I was also busy during the period,” he said. http://www.pijango..com/2014/09/obsanjo-goes-back-to-school-registers.html |

A man was arrested in counterterror raids in Australia on Tuesday, with police alleging he was sending money to a US jihadist fighting with a militant group in Syria. The arrest comes days after a terror suspect was shot dead in Melbourne after stabbing two police officers, and amid concerns about Australians fighting alongside jihadists in Iraq and Syria. “A 23-year-old man… will be charged with intentionally making funds available to a terrorist organisation,” Australian Federal Police assistant commissioner Neil Gaughan said. Gaughan said the man, who has not yet been named, had already transferred about Aus$12,000 (US$10,500) to a US citizen who travelled to Syria to fight. He said the arrest had been triggered by the belief that the man was allegedly preparing to send more funds. Police stressed there was no information or intelligence to indicate the man was involved in planning an attack in Australia, or linked in any way to the terror suspect killed last week. Abdul Numan Haider, 18, was shot dead as he carried out a frenzied knife attack on two policemen, one day after the Islamic State group called for Muslims to indiscriminately kill Australians. The incidents followed Australia raising its terror alert to “high” and after the government had repeatedly expressed concerns about citizens who have fought alongside jihadists in Iraq and Syria returning home radicalised and capable of carrying out attacks. Canberra has said that more than 60 Australians are already involved in these conflicts, while about 100 are supporting the jihadists from Australia. Tuesday’s operation involved more than 100 police raiding seven locations in suburban Melbourne, the culmination of an eight-month investigation initiated on a tip-off from the US Federal Bureau of Investigation, police said. The search warrants were mostly executed to gather evidence against the man arrested, they said. The raids follow some in Sydney and Brisbane earlier this month by more than 800 police to disrupt plans by jihadists to carry out “demonstration executions” on members of the public. Victoria state police deputy commissioner Graham Ashton said because Tuesday’s operation related to terror financing, there was no direct threat to the public. “We will be acting sooner rather than later if we detect any threat to the community,” Ashton said. http://www.pijango..com/2014/09/man-apprehended-in-australia-over.html

Former Super Eagles coach, Samson Siasia, has confirmed speculations that he is interested in staging a come back as the team’s gaffer, a job Stephen Keshi is currently still hanging on to in interim capacity. Speaking during a media parley with Friends of Football Foundation in Abuja yesterday, the coach stated that though it is the NFF executive committee that will determine who leads the Eagles, there was nothing wrong in his indicating interest to take the job. He insisted that since coaching is all about hiring and firing, there was no big deal in his eyeing Keshi’s job, more so when Keshi was the one he lost the job to in 2012. He stressed that the Eagles job is up for grabs since Keshi’s contract had expired. His words: “I have read several reports concerning my taking over from Keshi, but I don’t know what is going on because the NFF has to get itself together before anybody can talk anything about Eagles coaching job. “Let us just hope that the NFF election will be a successful one after that the issue of who takes charge of Eagles will come up,” he said. On the possibility of his interest affecting his relationship with Keshi, Siasia replied: “I am not taking his job because he does not have any job in the first place at the moment because his contract has since expired. The way I see it, it will now be left for whoever emerges new NFF president and his board members to decide who they want to take over the Super Eagles. “If they decide to appoint me, I will gladly accept the job because he also took the job away from me. One point I want to make here is that I don’t have any problem with Keshi. He remains my friend. Since he took my job, we still talk, hug and relate very well,” he insisted. The former Dream Team chief coach equally spoke on the chances of Super Eagles qualifying for the 2015 Morocco Africa Nations Cup, warning that once we lose the game against Sudan we would have to wait until 2017 to appear in the tournament. “Everything is hanging in the balance and if we don’t win the next game, we should forget about the ticket.” he noted. http://www.pijango..com/2014/09/am-interested-in-getting-my-eagles-job.html

An Indonesian boy suffering from a rare condition that leaves his skin dry and scaly has been dubbed 'snake boy' because he sheds his skin every 41 days. Ari Wibowo, 16, has to smear himself with moisturiser every three hours and soak in water every hour to stop himself drying up and cracking. The teenager suffers from Erythroderma, an inflammatory skin disease also known as red man syndrome, that causes the skin over his entire body to become scaly and flake off. He also has problems with his speech and his vision in his right eye is impaired, while the other is constantly being treated with drops. So far, doctors in Indonesia have been baffled by the disease, leaving his family to cope alone to manage the heartbreaking condition themselves. As well as living with his reptile-like appearance, Ari also has to put up with cruel stares and suspicion from villagers, and children too terrified by his looks to play with him where he lives in Tangerang, in the province of Banten. The schoolboy's incredible life has been captured by photographer Nurcholis Anhari Lubis, who studied the boy's condition as part of an essay project. The 35-year-old describes the boy's skin as "scaly like a snake about to shed his skin", as he observed him at home, in the classroom and socialising with friends his own age. He said: "It’s really sad because he was not born normally and has scaly skin all over his body, similar to being severely burnt, from the sole of his feet up to his head," he told Daily Mail Australia. "If the boy doesn't moisturise or soak his skin in water, his body would shrivel and harden up like a sculpture and he won't be able to move. "If he leaves it unattended for too long, he won’t be able to speak because the wrinkles inside his mouth would go hard and it would dry out all his blood in his body." Supporters of the Labour Party gathered in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun state for another rally, Sunday, with their leader, former governor Gbenga Daniel continuing his attacks on Governor Ibikunle Amosun. However, it was not only Daniel’s usual tirades against Amosun that stole the headlines. Mid way in the campaign, the political leader also succumbed to the demands of nature by snatching some sleep, at boring moments of the rally, perhaps www.pijango..com/2014/09/ex-governor-gbenga-daniel-sleeps-at.html
