"I wonder why the Cybercrime Unit and the Police Force generally cannot track these activities and apprehend them since they are on social media."
---- Sen Akpoti-Uduaghan.

Please, can Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan and her senate colleagues swear that they do not know that the bandits, mass kidnappers for ransom and armed Fulani herdsmen are offshoots of Boko Haram, and all are fighting to get Islamic Republic of Nigeria to be governed with Sharia criminal laws?

Can the Senators swear that they do not know that the political and religious leaders in the 12 far north Nigeria states adopted unconstitutional Islamic sharia criminal justice system that includes stoning blasphemous persons to death, stoning women to death for adultery, cutting out the hands of thieves, etc.?

Can the Senators swear they don't understand that the difference between Boko haram, mass kidnappers for ransome, bandits, armed Fulani herdsmen, and those who adopted sharia criminal justice system, is like the difference between six and half a dozen?

So, how do the police or army catch or checkmate those bandits taunting Nigeria online as they exhibit ransome money, since they are protected by those they are fighting for their religious interest?

Dissolve Nigeria into more manageable countries so that Nigeria will stop happening to us.
Anyone who believes that this madness of Bandits, Boko Haram, armed Fulani herdsmen and mass kidnapping, shall stop in Nigeria must be a slave to cheap cash from crude oil.
The sweetness about one's country is not how big or how rich one's country is.

Instead of doing the ultimate solution - dissolve Nigeria into more manageable countries, they beat about the bush.

All these senators know that the bandits, Boko Haram, mass kidnappers for ransom and armed Fulani herdsmen will never be conquered.

dgr8truth:
State police is not a guarantee of a crime-free society. Crime exists in countries with highly decentralized policing systems just as it exists in countries with centralized policing systems. The effectiveness of law enforcement depends less on who controls the police and more on the quality of institutions, accountability mechanisms, intelligence gathering, training, funding, and the rule of law.

While proponents of state police argue that it will bring security closer to the people and improve local intelligence, there are legitimate concerns about the potential for abuse. In a political environment where democratic institutions are still evolving, placing armed security structures directly under the control of state governments may create opportunities for political intimidation, suppression of opposition voices, election manipulation, and abuse of power.

The fundamental issue facing Nigeria's policing system is not merely its centralized structure but its lack of operational independence. A police force that is truly professional and independent should be loyal to the constitution and the law, not to politicians at any level of government. Whether the police are controlled from Abuja or from state capitals, political interference will continue to undermine effectiveness if institutional safeguards are weak.

What Nigeria urgently needs is a framework that guarantees the actual independence of the police. This should include transparent appointment processes, secure tenure for senior officers, independent oversight bodies, protection from political pressure, improved welfare for personnel, and strict accountability mechanisms for misconduct. Such reforms would allow law enforcement agencies to act professionally without fear or favor.

Security is ultimately a function of strong institutions rather than the level of government that controls them. Creating state police without first addressing the issues of accountability, professionalism, and political interference risks decentralizing the existing problems rather than solving them. The goal should not simply be to create more police forces, but to build security institutions that are independent, competent, accountable, and trusted by the citizens they serve.

A truly independent police force, backed by strong laws and oversight mechanisms, is more likely to deliver lasting security than merely transferring control from the federal government to the states.
You take an Okechukwu from the southeast who doesn't understand Hausa language and culture to go to Police a place in Hausa land. He will fail to Police the place.

You take a Muhammadu from Arewa who does not understand Igbo language and culture to go to Police the southeast. He will fail to Police the place

I hope the bill clearly addresses the qualification requirements for recruitment and other problems affecting the NPF.

All those state traffic agencies give a good insight into how state controlled paramilitary agencies can look like. They simply put their political thugs and party members who now constitute public nuisance and menace in the name of performing their duties.

Minimum must be HND or BSc. Refined intelligence driven policing is all we need.

Also, they must be adequately remunerated.

The chain of command should be shared with the judiciary too. Leaving it completely to the executives who are purely politicians, as we currently have is ineffective and evil. At least, judiciary is the only technocrat driven arms of government.
Heads of State/Regional police are elected by the people in Europe.
The head of the police takes charge of recruitment.
He is not appointed by the state government. He answers to the state but with limitations to the state governor. He answers to public opinion mainly.

Afghanistan 🇦🇫 model is what is being replayed in Nigeria.

The US led the Allied forces who fought the Taliban in Afghanistan, yet, the Taliban won the war and imposed Sharia criminal justice system upon all in Afghanistan.

Obasanjo called it political sharia then and ignored the political and religious leaders in the far north Nigeria states who in 1999 adopted unconstitutional Islamic sharia criminal justice system for 12 far north states.
Sharia criminal laws include stoning blasphemous persons to death, stoning women to death for adultery, cutting out the hands of thieves, etc.
A Nigeria to be governed with Sharia criminal justice system is what the Boko Haram and its offshoots - bandits and armed Fula.. herdsmen - are gunning for. Bandits get money for arms through ransom payment.

One of the earliest demands of Tanko Mohammed appointed CJN by then President Buhari was for Islamic sharia criminal justice system be included in Nigeria's Constitution. He added: "after all, we have the numbers in the National Assembly" to include it.
