Politics › Re: I Can’t Be PDP Chairman At All Cost, I’m Ready To Vacate Office – Sheriff by OnuohaEDOZIE(m): 2:33pm On Jun 29, 2016 |
tommykiwi: The factional National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Ali Modu Sheriff, has said he is ready to vacate his office only if the party’s leadership ask him to leave.
Sheriff’s comment follows the leadership crises currently rocking the opposition party after PDP claimed that the tenure of the factional leader had elapsed.
The party went ahead to inaugurate Sen. Ahmed Makarfi as the Chairman of a National Caretaker Committee to take over the leadership of the party.
But speaking when some state chairmen of the party paid him a solidarity visit in Abuja yesterday, Sheriff maintained that it was wrong for a faction of the party to attempt to push him aside when he was elected by the members of the party at its National Executive Committee meeting.
According to Sheriff, “I’m ready to go. I’m not saying I must be the national chairman at all costs. I was invited to lead the party and the election that brought me to office was done at the NEC Hall of the party at its national secretariat.
“Four other aspirants contested against me at the NEC meeting.
“The governors invited me among others to be considered by the NEC and the NEC sat and elected me as the national chairman of the party
“There’s nothing personal about my being there or individual pride about it. It is about the rule of law and the rule of law must not give way to illegalities.”
The former Borno State governor told the state chairmen that he was aware that his tenure would end in 2018, stressing that the former chairman that he replaced, Ahmed Mu’azu, was elected in 2014.
“Ahmed Mu’azu got his election when former President, Goodluck Jonathan was elected as the party’s presidential candidate in 2015. I replaced him. So, my tenure would expire after four years in office,” he added.

Politics › Re: INEC: We Can’t Monitor Sheriff’s Edo PDP Primaries by OnuohaEDOZIE(m): 1:07pm On Jun 27, 2016 |
comos: The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, yesterday said it would not monitor Wednesday’s gubernatorial primary elections bli Modu Sheriff-led faction of the PDP. “INEC is yet to take a decision on that even though I learnt Alhaji Modu Sheriff has written the Commission to say that he intends to hold one (primary)”, Deputy Director Public Affairs at INEC, Nick Dazang told Vanguard yesterday.
He also noted that Section 85 of the Electoral Act provides that any party that wishes to hold a convention or primaries shall serve the Commission a 21-day notice.
However, Dazang recalled that “the Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the Edo Governorship provides that primaries are to take place between 2nd June and 4th July”.
By this design, the Sheriff’s faction have fallen short of the requirement for a 21-day notice to INEC. Sheriff had also claimed that INEC never monitored the primary election conducted by the Ahmed Makarfi-led Caretaker committee which produced Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu as its candidate for the September polls. Dazang disputed the claim but stated that INEC was awaiting the judgment of the appellate court which is fixed for July 4 to enable it know which of the factions to recognize.
He said; “Even though INEC monitored the recent PDP primaries, it is awaiting the judgement of the Appeal Court scheduled for 4th July.
The judgement will determine which faction the Commission will recognize.”

Politics › Re: Nigeria Bombs Boko Haram Convoy, 15 Terrorists Killed, Many Wounded by OnuohaEDOZIE(m): 8:12am On Jun 21, 2016 |
sammieguze: The Nigeria Air Force (NAF) has carried out its first major air campaign under the recently launched ‘Operation Gama-Aiki’ mission, during which 15 Boko Haram insurgents were killed. The terrorists were killed as an Alpha Jet bombed their convoy in the northern part of Borno state, officials said. The aerial bombardment came about 72 hours after the air force commissioned despatched six war planes to tackle the deadly Boko Haram sect in the country’s volatile northeast. NAF’s Operation Gama Aiki, a Hausa-coined nom de guerre which means ‘Finish the Job’, was launched on Friday June 19 with a mission to dislodge remnants of Boko Haram insurgents fleeing Sambisa forest. The spokesman of the Nigerian Air Force, Ayodele Famuyiwa, a group captain, said the insurgents were spotted under trees by one of its intelligence planes, King Air A350i, while on surveillance of the insurgency-ravaged mission. They were immediately bombed, with 15 of them killed and their seven Hilux vans destroyed, Mr. Famuyiwa said. Some wounded terrorists fled with gunshot wounds, the statement said. “The casualty figure was confirmed by ground forces who subsequently consolidated on the gains of the air effort to pursue and inflict further casualty on the fleeing wounded members of the terrorist group,” the statement said. “Troops also confirmed two gun trucks were among vehicles destroyed by the Alpha Jet. Two AK-47 rifles, two RPGs and cache of assorted munitions were recovered. Boko Haram fighters had two weeks ago recaptured the communities around the border with the Niger Republic from where they had been launching attacks on civilians and security forces. Group Captain Famuyiwa, who is the NAF’s Director of Public Relations and Information, said the surveillance aircraft was able to send quick signals back to the Alpha Jet which came to attack the Boko Haram location and dislodged their movement towards a ground troop location. His Statement reads: “The Air Component of OPERATION LAFIYA DOLE has foiled a plan by Boko Haram Terrorists (BHTs) to ambush own surface forces harboured at Doron Naira, north of Borno State. Earlier today 19 June 2016, a Nigerian Air Force (NAF) King Air A350i Beechcraft aircraft on Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) mission sighted a group of BHTs in 7 Hilux vehicles hiding under tress at a location along the axis of advance of own ground forces towards Kangarawa, north of Borno State. “Following this discovery, an Alpha Jet was scrambled to attack the BHT location. The attack was successful as 15 members of the BHTs were killed and the whole vehicles knocked out. The casualty figure was confirmed by ground forces who subsequently consolidated on the gains of the air effort to pursue and inflict further casualty on the fleeing wounded members of the terrorist group. Troops also confirmed 2 gun trucks were among vehicles destroyed by the Alpha Jet as 2 x AK-47 rifles, 2 x RPGs and cache of assorted munitions were recovered. “The latest victory against the BHTs brings to fore the important role of airpower in counterinsurgency operation. In furtherance of this role, the NAF has been relentless in its effort to shape the battlespace and provide favourable environment for own surface forces to operate. “The recent deployment of additional platforms to increase the tempo of air operations at the commencement of OPERATION GAMA AIKI is aimed at fostering this objective. The foiled plan to ambush own surface forces by BHTs shows that the air efforts by the NAF has started to yield the desired results”.

Crime › Re: Sunny Ekechukwu Benjy Eke's Bail: NACOB And Accra High Court In Tango by OnuohaEDOZIE(m): 8:43pm On Jun 20, 2016 |
dridowu: The Narcotics Control Board (NACOB) and the Accra High Court are on a collision course over bail terms granted to a Nigerian drug baron described by the security agencies as a kingpin in the narcotic drug business in West Africa.
The baron, Chief Sunny Ekechukwu Benjy Eke, who had been on remand at the Nsawam Medium Security Prisons since 2013 for attempting to smuggle 281,604 grammes of liquid cocaine with a street value of more than $12.5 million into the country, was granted bail by the Accra High Court last Thursday.
The court, presided over by Mr Justice J. K. Dorgu, granted Chief Eke and his accomplice, James Elike Chukwu, bail in the sum of GH¢200,000, with three sureties each.
The bail terms were that all the sureties should be Ghanaians who are gainfully employed and whose places of abode should be known to the police.
International drug agencies
The bail terms have angered top officials of NACOB, as its Executive Secretary, Mr Yaw Akrasi Sarpong, has described the terms as very unfortunate because Chief Eke is known to have jumped bail in Brazil and all the international drug agencies were hard on his tail but could not arrest him until he was arrested in Ghana.
Reacting to the court’s decision in Accra last Friday, Mr Sarpong said NACOB’s challenge was that the judge, in using his discretion as required by law, should have considered the past record of the suspect, which is public knowledge.
He said the fight against trans-national organised crime was not for the security agencies alone but the whole justice delivery system in the country.
He warned that if the suspect escaped, nobody should blame NACOB because the board would use meagre state resources or property to monitor the suspect as “he walks free on the streets of Accra, a situation which he could take advantage of to escape again”.
Organised crime
He said the plea of NACOB was that while the Judiciary upheld the 1992 Constitution and the rule of law, there was the need to understand that the characters involved in trans-national organised crime, such as suspect Chief Eke, could undermine democracy, promote impunity of the private sector against the public sector, engender corruption both in the public and the private sectors, as well as give cause for the rise of fake and wrong role models.
“For NACOB, the condition under which the accused was granted bail was not the best, judging from his past record of jumping bail. Besides, we are aware that the wheel of justice is a slow processs, but no matter how slow it is, justice is more likely to prevail than injustice,” he said.
He expressed concern over the erroneous scientific concept that the state was more powerful than the private sector, saying that trans-national organised crime could generate money on the black market which the state did not have.
He said drug business and money could be linked to terrorism, cyber crime, money laundering, human, arms and wild life trafficking, among other crimes.
Background
On February 13, 2013, the Daily Graphic carried a story about the seizure of the largest quantity of cocaine in recent years at the Tema Harbour, estimated to be 200 kilogrammes, with a street value of $12 million.
The drug was concealed in a 40-footer container filled with 1,946 boxes of shampoo imported from Bolivia in South America to Ghana.
The owner, Chief Eke, a 53-year-old Nigerian businessman, was arrested, together with another accomplice, James Elike Chukwu, 47, a second-hand clothes dealer in Accra.
Chief Eke was described by international law enforcement agencies as a notorious drug baron who had been involved in several drug seizures in Brazil and Bolivia.
The success of the operation was the result of co-operation among the security agencies in the country and their international partners.
In December 2012, NACOB, through its foreign counterparts, received intelligence that cargo said to contain a quantity of cosmetics was heading to the Tema Harbour from Bolivia and was suspected to contain some narcotic substances.
Surveillance mounted
On January 29, 2013, the said cargo, which was shipped in a 40-footer container marked MRK 257478-45 GI belonging to MAESRK Shipping Lines and consigned to De Consumables Lines Limited, docked at the Tema Harbour and officials of NACOB, who were on standby, immediately mounted surveillance on it.
After almost two weeks, a clearing agent arrived with the necessary documents to clear the goods and he was arrested to assist in investigations and the container was later traced to Elike Chukwu, who was arrested at his residence at Aplaku Junction, near Weija.
Upon interrogation, Elike Chukwu told NACOB officials that the real owner of the goods was Chief Eke.
It took NACOB over one week of controlled operation to lure Chief Eke back into the country for his arrest at the Accra Shopping Mall, where he had scheduled a meeting with Chukwu and the clearing agent.
He had in his possession four Nigerian passports with different names at the time of his arrest.
