Properties › Re: How Do You Carryout Integrity Test On An Abandon Building by opalu:
There are two issues here:
1. The building has been abandoned for a long time. Meaning that the strength and it's ability to perform it's initial intended use has been or is likely to have been compromised.

2. The owner wants to increase the height or dimensions of the structure. Which implies that even if it was not abandoned, it still would have required structural modifications.

In cases whereby there are no drawings for a structure, you do not need to worry yourself. Experienced structural Engineers carry out onsite verification to ascertain the necessary parameters. Even if you need the exact structure details of a building built on piles 30 years ago, it can be done. Not based on assumptions but the exact thing. That is new technology.

Now on this your issue, if you are a client, I advise you not to try to understand everything about the whole process before you do it. Because chances are that any professional that can make you fully grasp the processes is a quack. Because Engineering is not art. Even a surgeon cannot make his patient to fully grasp the entire operation details before he carry out his work.

In conclusion, I advise you to get experts to handle that work. Not a part time professional or a young graduate. Engage someone who makes his living from doing such work. They are more serious and current with their field. It's not about the test to evaluate if the foundation can carry it. The foundation must be modified. It is a must. In my doctorate programme, I made some discoveries about the lifespan of structures. You can find a way to use the existing foundation and for years it will stand gidigba. But you have shortened the lifespan of that structure considerably.

stpat1:
How deep do one need to dig for foundation of a 2 storey building? Not water logged area. Also, won't the foundation need to be chained?
How deep depends on the nature of soil underneath. That cannot be determined from then screen of the phone but by a soil test carried by an expert in that field. From the report, they suggest the type of foundation and depth.
As a Structural Engineer, I could know the best foundation type that is needed and the depth and width. I could decide not to go with their recommendation because all I need from the report is to know the capacity of the soil to carry the load that is Coming upon it (among other things). But the structural engineer knows the weight of the building that cones unto the soil at various points.

That notwithstanding the site needs a soil test before your question can be answered

All these Media Senators get me tired!
If you have a great idea like this very one, don't announce on media. Sell it to 3/4 or at least 2/3 of your colleagues and make it a law and also lobby the Executive arm to buy it.

Nigeria can develop faster in regions not in states with galaxies of SSAs and SAs
