notindome:
The sewage pipe entering into the septic tank from the IC/MH, Was there a kind of sleeve used to make its entry point on the wall of the tank when casting? or it will be chiselled out?
Chiselling or sleeves can work. But most times the former is practically feasible except you can predetermine the exact spot it will go in at casting stage.
Properties › Re: How Does This Spetic Tank Work? by opalu:
Luckily I have cast and buried very many of such tanks. And I want to explain it in very plain manner.

Remember that in the villages and in many towns, to do your soakaway, you just dig the ground and use blocks to build the walls of the soakaway inside the dug pit. Then you turn some blocks so that the waste liquids can flow through the holes of the block into the soil. Then the solid waste is left inside the soakaway.

But in towns and cities where the water is very near like in lekki and VI, if you do that normal soakaway, the water from the ground will turn it into a swimming pool in just 1 day or 2! You cannot use blocks to do the walls because the water pressure plus earth pressure will collapse it inside the ground. And even before then, water would pass through any holes allowed into it.

But people in the house must poopoo. So the best solution builders adopt is to cast the whole thing on the ground after reinforcement and carpentry works. We use waterproof admixture to improve the water resistance of the structure. We also plaster it and apply felting to it (if the client doesn't over negotiate).
Thereafter, some guys your are expert in SINKING septic tanks enter inside and continually dig and dig until the entire structure reaches the required level. If you don't engage a good plumber and a land surveyor, they may sink the tank below the required level therefore making it not work properly. Or they make it to be too high that it would not flow with the compound level.
So after sinking it, you will start seeing water inside like swimming pool except you did it in very dry season. You use 2 or 1 pumping machine to bail out the water to the point that it becomes very dry. Then suddenly you seal the bottom using DPM, chemicals and cement mortar. That sealing stops the water completely. They way you seal is systematically. You seal one side and allow space for water to pass through another place until the sealing dries. Then block that hole and run your rebars and cast fast fast fast. cool
Please don't try this at home. Because many who we explain like this to jump to "Do It Yourself " and they mess up the whole septic tank.

Any septic tank done wrongly will get full easily and they will have to pump the sewage out every 6 months or 9 months or even 3 months. A good one will last very long before needing a pump. The waste water can have its own compartment or just to flow into the public drain. I mean water from kitchen and bath etc.

After the bottom, the top slab is cast using formwork and rebars also. There must be openings with precast concrete cover. Your interlocking should pass over the tank if you got the level perfectly. Also don't let the pipes to run into the septic tank at middle point. Because most Nairalanders whose site I went to correct, the sewerage pipes enter the tanks at middle so it get full easily. They got the slope wrong from the manholes and Inspection chambers.

WELCOME BACK MY PRESIDENT
Despite the economic challenges faced
We have what to be grateful for- We haven't seen when generals and above-the-laws Politicians faced charges for touching the money belonging to all of us like this. We haven't seen where people willingly returned money back to where they stole them to.

However as you return Sir, you need to declare an emergency on the economy so that the poor who you are working to help won't die before the help reaches them. lipsrsealed

Can the Financial Gurus here break down what this policy entails. The pros and cons to the common man? Leaving it to demand and supply to determine the price will the exchange rate ever return to 160 naira to a dollar?
Why don't we get Production Experts and Potential Manufacturers to make them keep Nigeria as the biggest producer Nation in Africa first so at least the demand on our Products will increase drastically rather than all these solving the problems from the angle of currency?
Is tender Bill not just a representation of VALUE? Can currency on its own stand alone without value being produced by the Nation?

Properties › Re: Building Collapse, Construction Failures - Who's To Blame? by opalu:
I am more comfortable looking for CAUSES rather than BLAMES. Because in most cases, those blamed are not responsible for the causes.

After taking a deep thought on most building collapse cases in Nigeria in recent years, I have ascertained and verified that the No1 Cause of Building collapse is GREED. No2 is NEGLIGENCE and No3: INCOMPETENCE.

GREED:
When the Client wants to build 3 storey structure on piles at Ifako with just 20M and he neglects those contractors who charged above N50m to choose one who quoted N19.5M. It's called greed. When the Contractor kicks out an artisan that charged 300k for casting to engage one that charged 100k, Greed. When you price down the quote to a level that the labour fees become peanuts, it attract only monkeys. Greed. When a developer sandfills the site this month and he insists that you start construction next month or 'I get another COREN Engineer to do it". It is called GREED. When a client who knows your reputation on Nairaland and in the industry withholds your outstanding payments and threatens to blackmail you if you do not stick to former quotes given before increase of fuel price, that is greed mixed with wickedness. undecided

NEGLIGENCE:
Negligence is when apprentices from China will come to Nigeria as Experts and the professional bodies lack a Dora Akunyili and a Nuhu Ribadu who could make those dormant and toothless Bodies into Bull dogs to catch auch imported Quacks.
Negligence is when a client pays astronomical attention to plastering and does not give a damn whatever rubbish went into the concrete.
Negligence is when a Professional gets a huge contract and sends artisans to oversee what only he should check. Negligence is when people don't focus on the standards of materials but focus on only the prices. Etc

INCOMPETENCE :
When you give your job to someone who knows no jack about that type of work. In the hospital, you don't give an Ear infection to a Dentist to treat, also you don't give a brain surgery to a gynaecologist to treat. Because a gyna is incompetent to handle brain issues. And vice versa. It is inside Construction industry we see grandmothers of clients who claim they are experts since their husbands built house when they were in their twenties. It is in our own industry that everyone who can read and write is called an Engineer. Yet when buildings collapses, several people die at once and many are maimed for life. Everyone start to order you around as soon as they transfer a miserable 5mill into your account.
That is why I am so glad I decided to change from a contractor to a developer who also handles bridge and waterworks projects. Because on that frequencies hardly can you see the mix multitudes trying to tell you what they no nothing about.
