Religion / Re: Let's Stop Joking With Hell Fire!!! - By Sunday Akanni Moshood by opeyemiolu(f): 9:13am On Mar 11, 2018
CuteMadridista:
Hell always sounded like a cynical marketing ploy designed to make people afraid to leave or displease the particular sect. And it seemed to really kill empathy - 'Yahweh says they burn, they burn' doesn't make me think of someone being full of love and compassion and all that.

Eternal punishment for finite transgressions always seemed abusive to me. How can someone look at the idea of a being who would condemn people to that and call it love?

Even when I was a Christian Hell was just too weird for me to accept. Infinite punishment for finite offenses is an eye for an eye on steroids. Punishing people for disobeying nit-picky rules makes Yahweh an abusive parent. One reason often given for punishment is to teach the offender not to offend again, but if punishment is eternal then how can the offender benefit from this teaching? Jesus is supposed to be into forgiveness but forgiveness shouldn't involve eternal suffering. Hell isn’t redemptive, it isn’t leading to repentance, it’s simply pain for pain’s sake.

I love this quote: “Heaven and hell seem out of proportion to me: the actions of men do not deserve so much.”

and of course I get the rationalisation of hell by Christians saying its moral accountability and saying bad people go to hell;
that's nonsense and they know it!!!

If Yahweh is real and omniscient, that means he already decided that we're going to hell before he even created us. But if this omniscient deity allows for deathbed conversions, then it doesn't matter what kind of life you lead. You could be a brutal dictator who massacred tens of millions of people, yet still get into heaven if you tell Jesus you're sorry. Your victims could all go to hell for eternity if they never repented. That's how bleeped up Christian morality is.

Maybe Christians can answer a few questions for me. The Bible says that there is ONLY ONE way to get into Heaven: by accepting salvation through Jesus.

So it follows that the Christians who ran the Nazi death camps can get into heaven. But their 6 million Jewish victims must burn for all eternity in the pits of Hell. I've talked to many Christians about this and they just pretty much accept it.

My questions are:

1. How f***ed up do you have to be to believe Nazis can go to Heaven but their 6 million Jewish victims must burn? That's just sick. But Christians believe it. What the f*** is wrong with you people?

2. Why would ANYONE willingly worship a god that would act like that? Is it just a fear thing (better known as cowardice)? And

3. Even if you get into Heaven what makes you think you'll be safe with a psycho god like that running the place? What's to stop your god getting a wild hair up his ass one day and sending Christians to a place so bad it makes Hell look like an ice cream parlor? He used to like the Jews too. Or so the story claims. What makes you think you're safe?

I love you already.

76 hours.
Don't they have jobs?
The general overseer should be ashamed man. 2 to 4 hours is ok. or probably a Friday night. But 76 hours. Imagine.
After I'll be complaining that Nigerians will do burial ceremonies for 3 to 4 days.
This cannot happen in a developed nation. Smh
See how the 76 hours will take place in Nigeria non-stop but the remaining 15 countries will share theirs. This is a waste of productive man-hours.

Another money extortation programme. I'm even thinking of switching career paths to become a pastor so that I can enlarge my pockets at the expense of gullible worshippers who respond to every beck and call of their deceptive pastors.
Please, I am interested. It will be fun and we will make money while at it.

Religion / Re: PART 2: Pastor to Atheist: Why I will NEVER be a Christian again by opeyemiolu(f): 12:51pm On May 06, 2016
dablazor:
HardMirror, this is a really nice thread, you should know I read from Part 1 without skipping a single page, read most as guest, I was forced to recall my Nairaland password as I had forgot it.
I have to admit, your story is a little similar to mine, though on a rather smaller scale, I wasn't into the evangelism brouhaha but I have read the bible over 30 times growing up back to back (although wasn't a good read because of some absurdity, most parts I try not to understand, because questions would keep pouring in)
I was born into a Christian family, brought up a Christian, from catholic to deeper life, to winners, redeem, seventh day adventist, and back to redeem I think the only denomination I never attended was a white garment church.
Growing up as a Christian was challenging because I was a curious child who applies logic, I could recall even before I was thirteen the bible confuses me a lot because somethings don't just add up, but I was so scared to ask questions, I was too scared to think, and I have to admit, I felt trapped.
I once went to my pastor when I was a teenager with some questions about Christ's sacrifice, which doesn't make sense to me, I ended up having the devil casted out of me, as my pastor could only justify my superior argument with my being possesed by the devil, I was given a special prayer session and I was convinced I was possessed too(funny). Ever since then, I never wanted to question God for I fear that's the devil tempting me, I used the 'get thee behind me satan' clause a lot back then growing up saying it silently to myself anytime these thoughts flood my mind, I felt it was the devil talking to me, I couldn't even question my belief because I always felt the devil is the only reason i'd question christianity, am sure a lot of Christians can relate to this fear if they are being honest.
Am pretty sure if we were all brought up free of religion and was then introduced to Christianity after puberty, Christianity would be extinct.
Altogether I dropped religion last year towards the end of my masters before my PhD and I wished i'd done earlier, I felt so free, I could think about anything and ask questions, I felt like I have being caged for twenty-five years, I never took cocaine before but I can tell the euphoric sensation is quite similar to that of coke fiends.
Am sure a lot of Christians are familiar with John 8:32 "For ye shall know the truth and the truth would set you free" indeed the bible got this right, and I keep thinking it's an hidden message in that book.

Lol anyway, funny thing is I still gotto church, and yeah my 'Pastor' is a good speaker, he is a good motivational speaker, the church to me since I lost my faith has being a weekly societal gathering where you come, dance, meet various busy-working friends, take pictures and all. Yes I do pay offerings as well, because I know it ain't no kid thing for a motivational speaker to stand on a podium for an hour tops, he needs to be paid. And good thing is my pastor barely quotes the bible, his teachings are based on morals.
The whole world needs to wake up, its not bad if we have a morality class every weekend, but let's not just cloud it with some sacrosanct spiel of a Jesus/God, it's stupid. The gathering is a good idea, but the god factor is wrong.
It's not fair having believers praying and fasting day in day out hoping to get answers to their pleas while abandoning hard work and placing all their bets on a god, let people know both good and bad experiences they have aren't predestined by a god, or that the affairs of this world are being controlled by a spiritual being who they can call to and he'd intervene, you reap exactly what you sow, nothing is fixed, some are lucky some aren't, no sky daddy would help you out because as far as I am concerned, he only exists in the head of his believers and outright powerless in the real world!
Most people rely so much on a god that they don't work hard as much as they need to as they believe they had done their best(even when it's not enough) and having comfort in putting the rest it all in a supposed God's hand, and once things didn't go as they anticipated because they believed, they make excuses for their imaginary sky daddy, he ain't even have to beg for it.

The Internet is killing religion, as people are beginning to see the truth, and meet others like them which they never thought existed because no one would come forward in a rather religion fanatic society.

I believe there is no god, hence agnostic-atheist, am not sure if he exists and I won't waste valuable time trying to be sure if there is a god or if there isn't but as far as I am concerned, if a god exists, he would rather have people know outright that he exists, because everyone is worshiping a god based on their societal leanings, which means most are christians because they are born in a Christian home, same with Muslims and others and they all claim to be linked to god, and if he won't clear our doubts, and show us the true way to him and he still exists despite his reluctance to clear these said doubts, then I believe he doesn't care about our affairs or our worship.
So i'd live my life free of worry and reliance, and take the Bulls by the horn, shikena.

am no more caged, and my life has being better, my studies has being swift, grades have being great, I take responsibility for everything that happens to me without wasting time on some god, my life has never being better, I feel in charge, and it feels like am truly in charge of my life.
It's the best feeling ever!!!
Same here. Thanks to Johnnydon22 for giving me the courage to come out a little.

HardMirror:

Noticed you from the very beginning of my other thread. smiley Always reading without commenting, but you were always there.

Yes, it would be wicked to to take that away from them. Reason why I keep repeating it that my story is not to convert anyone but make information and my experience available with those struggling with their religious inclination.

I am a closet atheist for my safety. I have never been a serious christian. Have always being skeptical of religion since my teen. If my family and husband family know of my atheist stand, they will disown me. So I am still involve in religion activities for fun. I usually have a good laugh in church during sunday school and when the pastor is preaching.

Your story is touching. How you were unable to heal the blind man and the dumb boy move me to tears. I wish it was possible.

I congratulate you on your freedom from religion. I am really enjoying your story. Please dont stop.

Religion / Re: Why Did You Choose To Be An Athiest? by opeyemiolu(f): 6:55am On Dec 22, 2014
Let me share my experience with you guyz. I am married; there is this married man that insisted on dating me. Always calling and all that. I told him that dating him will hurt my husband and his wife, hence I won't date him. He insisted and I told him it is a sin since he claim to be a xtian. He said it doesn't matter that afterwards he will ask for forgiveness. In a nut shell, he called one sunday morning and asked if I was in church; I told him I am not because am an atheist. After several questions of why and when, he caused me and told me to delete his number that he doesn't have anything to do with me again. I laughed and did as he said. I have come to realise that morality is about not hurting another person with you deed and has nothing to do with religion. Religious people are all out to please their leader even if that decision will hurt their neighbours. My verdict has been if you want to be religious, be, and stop castigating those who are not.

Actually she was visiting a bank on the premises of the church camp. Not going to attend their services

@ opeyemiolu:I totally feel you and am proud you kept your cool. Sometimes overzealous church members take laws into their hands and go beyond what they are asked to do. its quite obvious that they were up to no good. If the church was that serious about their law, you shouldn't even be allowed to drive in. Weldone on keeping your cool
that was my point exactly. If they are serious about this dresscode, why allow people to wear it and drive in or allow it during church program. Whatever harm they feel it can cause can still be caused when they get to wherever they are going to. Trust me my people, I know provocative dressing when I see one. Mine was very decent and my only offence was being fat and having a big bottom. If you see me where skirt or dress, it is usually worse. Try visualising Toolz kind of figure.

I was typing while waiting for the car coming to pick me. Please pardon an typo. Let me add, it was one NSCDC guy that took his time to calmly explain the situation to me and gave me the options I have. The church security personnel came and was shouting and bragging and trying to make me feel bad but I kept my cool. It is unfortunate that is what Christianity has been reduced to.
Religion / Dress Code At A Particular Church Camp Ground by opeyemiolu(f): 9:33am On Dec 03, 2014
I was at a particular church camp ground where a branch of a bank am auditing is situated. I was properly dressed in a pant trouser and office top. I didnot go with my car so I had to join public transport and subsequently, Okada. I got to the gate to go in only to be told by the security personnel that I can't go in because I am wearing a trouser. I was surprised because I have never heard of such before in my life. I told them, I am coming from the office and going for an official assignment in a bank branch within the camp and I was not inform of any such dress code previously. They said the only solution is for me to go back and change to a skirt, wrapper or dress. Alternatively I could call someone from the office am going to bring a car to come and pick me at the gate. I opted for the second option.

I am a size 16 and I feel better cover up in a trouser. Wearing a dress or skirt, I appear more scandalous. Bottomline, I was told if it was during a programme at the camp, that nobody will stop me. I was already tired of religion and this incident just put end to any little faith I have. Hypocrisy everywhere.

I Didnot get married untill I was 29. Come and see para. My mum, my aunties took me to pastors, prophets and all of them had something to say. From am ogbanje, to my dad do not want me to get married. They told me all the stuffs I need to do. I didnothing. I dint get married on time cos I was pursuing my profession trying to pass my exams and had no time for men. Immediately I was ready, I found my soulmate and got married. Now with a baby. So choose what you want to believe and carry your cross. It irritates me whenever I see you open yet another thread about your spiritual problems. Continue in your bondage.
Religion / Re: Where Else Will I Run To? by opeyemiolu(f): 9:26am On Nov 22, 2014
Your problem started when you start to believe what is not there. I have read all your diaries, I follow all your threads. You are delusional. Someone talking about Aye; I was born and bred in Cherubim and Seraphim church, attended lots of celestial and ended up in redeem before I became an atheist. You can be sure have seen lots of stuff. The bottom line is they are not true. This is how you will continue to chase shadow. There is no point looking for deliverance since none has worked. Simply start worshiping your mummy water spirit if that will set you free. To me as far as you worship something, you are all thesame to me. It doesnt matter what you call what you worship
Na you get your problem, find solution to it. I was told I am Emere or ogbanje but I don't bloody care. Who gat time for that. I could have term all my dreams, sleep paralysis and other stuffs I experience spiritual but who gat time for that. I am too busy to even give it a thought.
