Thank God for journey mercies. Please what cargo company did you use? You mentioned Air Canada, I didn't know Air Canada has cargo services from Lagos to Canada. Also please how much per bag/kg are the terminal fees when collecting cargo? Thanks in advance.

daks02:
Hello People long time no talk. Landing gist below:
Before i continue, 3days earlier we weighed and reweighed luggage and decided it wont make sense to pay for extra luggage (lufthansa charged CAD$300, smh) so we went to cargo paid about 175k for 141kg and issued receipt for N23K (which way naija?).

ps our luggage was delivered to our house 2days later *double side eye* air canada, cargoed goods arrived before us sef but we went to pick it 2days after we landed, paid terminal fees and that was all.

Please has anyone used Sterling bank recently to pay online for a USD transaction. Please what is the rate? Is it cheaper than GT bank's $1/NGN365 currently?

@Claire18 Wow. That was a fair rate. Please do you remember the specific BDC you used because I think there are quite a few Bureau De change at MMIA.

Landing gist
No queue at all. Please come early as much as possible, cos just 30 mins after, the queue I saw was scary. W used the remaining time to eat our last naija meal for now. Meanwhile, I was able to change naira to CAD easily at the BCD @ N285 which wasn’t bad instead of stressing with USD. 350CAD = N99,750. I withdrew 100k from an atm closeby n case closed. That was enough for holding.

I thank God for seeing me through this incredible journey. I am yet to get PPR but I decided to share my experience regarding the IELTS General test. I am currently awaiting PPR. This is an EPISTLE because I want to help people who are new to this journey the same way this thread has helped me. There may be grammatical errors lol because I do not have the time to proofread. I may forget to share this when I get my PPR so I decided to do this now.

My Canadian dream started in early 2017. A friend of mine who got PPR explained the process to me and referred me to cic’s website. I wrote IELTS the time in 2017 when I was unfamiliar with the exam format. I used one of Baron’s IELTS textbooks. That was my first mistake. My overall score wasn’t great and I scored 6.5 in writing but that was to be expected because I didn’t know much about the test format. Eventually I learnt that Cambridge IELTS series was the better option. I downloaded as many Cambridge IELTS general books I could find online and practiced with them for my second IELTS test.

I read everything I could about the writing test on websites such as Liz’s website, and practiced very well. A friend of mine introduced me to this Nairaland thread. I read many threads to make sure I had a sound understanding of the entire process. This took many weeks. When I saw my second IELTS General result, I still fell short of the required score in writing alone with a 6.5 score yet again. The third time I wrote the IELTS test (January 2018), I took a different approach and decided to spend an equal amount of time evaluating my writing via independent sites such as www.slickwrite.com/#!home. I like the slick write site because it checks grammatical errors and sentence structure, so I was able to learn to ensure that I expressed myself with an active voice instead of a passive voice. This was the main area of improvement I noticed because I enjoyed constructing my sentences in both passive and active sentences. I like writing in different styles but this may not work in IELTS tests since it appears the examiners favour academic writing to an extent in IELTS task 2. I even paid for ‘Cambridge English write and improve’ to evaluate my writing. This website is owned by Cambridge, the same organization that organizes IELTS-British council tests. A registered user is able to click on IELTS general or academic profiles and practice with the blank spaces provided under each question. I noticed the technology kept scoring me a 6.5 so I decided to test their algorithm by placing essays that scored 7.5 or above of various IELTS ex-examiners under the same question type, this technology still scored these essays a 6.5 score. Therefore, how could I expect my score to be any different? I just used a graph below to critic my writing, the graph shows you if your previous score improved after making changes to the same essay. I saw improvements with every change so I knew I was on the right track. I decided to just keep practicing and using the different essay-evaluation sites to rate my writing. I could not afford to pay online professional evaluators because the quoted prices were too expensive. I also didn’t have much faith in them. In addition, I paid for an Udemy IELTS tutorial, which helped me tremendously.

By the time I wrote my third IELTS test, I was very convinced that I would get a minimum of 7. Lo and behold, I got a 6.5 yet again. I expressed my frustration to my friend and he told me to re-mark. He was under the impression that IELTS examiners sometimes scored the tests wrongly. He said the request for remark would be forwarded to UK so I had a better chance of getting a fair score. I told him that I had read on Nairaland that most people that asked for a remark were unsuccessful in gaining a higher score. He persuaded me and I asked for an Enquiry on Results (EOR) regarding my writing score only. My score was upgraded after few weeks to a 7. I was overjoyed. My funds were returned to me after several weeks. By this time, I had evaluated my Bachelors degree with WES. I requested for an additional evaluation relating to my ACCA advanced diploma. My ECA came out successfully and I dived in the pool and got ITA on June 12th 2019.

My brother had a Masters so I coached him on the entire journey specifically the IELTS. He had great results FIRST TIME but a 6.5 in writing. I just looked at him and said ask for a remark because I was sure his writing was good. Why was I so convinced? Because he has used my method and split his time equally between practicing and evaluating his writing. He is now in Canada. I didn’t even claim points for sibling because he went too close to when I submitted. That’s how I know that when God says it is your time, everything will work in your favour. I have not been following this thread for a while so I may not see responses but if you have further questions, you can send me a message. Although I am sure I have divulged my entire IELTS strategy here.

My advice to future IELTS Test takers: Make use of Cambridge IELTS books when preparing, that’s all you need for the listening tests. The audio for each test is provided. The Cambridge textbooks won’t help you with your IELTS writing because I feel the answers to the essays given are too simple. The skeptic in me thinks this may be deliberate on their part. I’m surprised at the essay scores attributed to these essays. It’s better to find out what you are doing wrong regarding writing than seeking to place the blame on the test system in general. Remember you are the one with the Canadian dream not British Council or MOD IELTS examiners. If you are convinced your writing is adequate then please ask for a remark. Make use of Youtube videos to practice your speaking test; imagine the examiner is asking you the question and not the respondent. You can easily download books with various questions on speaking to practice but be weary of using the answers because there may be a lot of grammatical errors. Finally, you can choose to use any of the sites I mentioned to evaluate your writing. I wish you all the best. May God favour you all.

Thanks for reading.

My humble self.

Hello Liz019. Please do you mean you were charged 210 USD for every KG OVER 23kg of your required 2 luggages OR you were charged 210 USD for EACH BAG as you stated meaning that even if the bag weighed 112kg, a person would still pay 210USD?

Liz019:
I travelled via Ethiopian airlines, they charge 210 USD for every extra bag of 23kg. Lets just say all my bags were very very overweight, so I paid the price cry

You're not taxed on the income you bring from Nigeria... You just report it so as to calculate your benefits... Like GST.... It does not form part of taxable income.

Hello, please which address in Ikeja did you go? I thought NPC's office is in Babs Animashaun Surulere as stated on google. I'm hoping to start the process of getting attestation of birth. Also, regarding the requirement to go to High court, are we to do it ourselves or there's someone legit at their office that can do it on our behalf?

Scandinavian02:

Still on the Birth Certificate brouhaha. I decided to upload both our birth certificates (Non-NPC)and birth attestations fron NPC which i intend to get.

I left for Ikeja LGA early this morning to find out the process. I met a staff at the NPC office who told me that i need to swear an affidavit for myself and my sister from the High Court and pay #12,000 each for the attestation then I would have to wait for two weeks to get it.

Please is this the process and cost of the attestation? Can't I get it cheaper and faster than this?

wow, God is indeed awesome. It took about 5 months or so. Since it takes a while for the conversion process to CPA, Is ACCA recognised by employers in that you can get a non-entry accounting/ finance position in your region while waiting for CPA? I'm just wondering since i'm an ACCA myself. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

raphrulz:
Thanks.

British Columbia... I converted from ACCA. I started the entire process in mid November. That was when i first messaged them declaring my interest to apply. I got the membership on May 1 and had to pay pro-rated subscription + membership application fees to complete the process. Cost me over a thousand CAD. If you don't pay the amount within 30 days... the process would be restarted and all efforts lost.

CONGRATULATIONS. What province? also was it conversion from ACCA? If so, please how long did it take from when CPA got your full documents?

raphrulz:
So I was finally admitted into CPA membership last week.. The stress paid off.

Hello Fam,

I would like to ask about proof of sibling relationship. My sibling is in Canada. Unfortunately, my parents never collected birth certificates for both of us. I just happen to have my mom's very old passport that states that my sister is her daughter. Now I need an official government document that states that I am her (my mom's) daughter. Is there a birth and death registry in Lagos I can apply for a birth certificate from? If not, which official document can i apply for now that will aid me? Please help.

Thank you for this much needed input.

salford:

I am not a BA, but in many industries in Canada, experience beats certifications. e.g I have seen so many job seekers with PMP, but with very little or few (less than 5 years) experience in project management. This leaves me wondering how they were able to get certification. My employer won't even look at certifications in BA, PM or IT if you do not have at least 5 to 7 years experience to back it up.

As long as regulations allows an employer to avoid certifications/paper qualifications, then they would go for the person with the most experience.

The reason your friends were advising you to go for a program that has an internship option is because some employers would retain after the training. Getting a foot in the door is very important here. It's the only breakthrough alot of people need to kickstart their career.

To @Bsbabe and any other Business Analysts in the house,

Please I would like to make an inquiry for aspiring Business Analysts such as myself. I am a soon-to-be certified CPA accountant (via ACCA) who wishes to switch to Business Analyst role. My friends in Canada have advised me to do an extensive course that will provide guaranteed internship placements after the course for beginners in BA roles. I would like to be certified as a Business Analyst and pursue a career there so I would like to ask if i should do the beginners ECAB certification OR wait for 5 years while working as a BA and then do the CBAP certification. I intend to do either of both and not the two so the question is crucial to me. I ask because i noticed that the job roles I have seen for BAs in Canada does not require certification so i'm leaning towards CBAP in the next 5 years but i require guidance from professionals. Pls my humble self would accept any advice or additional advice you can give. Thanks.
