Programming / 17-year-old Boy Sells App For $30 Million To Yahoo Inc by Orpelin: 11:27am On Mar 27, 2013
The 17-year-old’s algorithmic invention for a news-reading app lured the Silicon Valley startup, which is trying to strengthen its mobile offerings.
One of Yahoo’s newest employees is a 17-year-old high-school student in Britain. As of Monday, he is one of its richest, too.

Nick D’Aloisio, a programming whiz who wasn’t even born when Yahoo was founded in 1994, sold his news-reading app, Summly, to Yahoo on Monday for a sum said to be in the tens of millions of dollars.

Yahoo said it would incorporate his algorithmic invention, which takes long-form stories and shortens them for readers using smartphones, in its own mobile apps, with D’Aloisio’s help.

“I’ve still got a year and a half left at my high school,” he said in a telephone interview. But to partly abide by the company’s new policy that prohibits working from home, he will make arrangements to test out of his classes and work from the Yahoo office in London.

D’Aloisio, who declined to comment on the price paid by Yahoo (the website All Things D pegged the purchase price at about $30 million), described himself not as the majority owner of Summly but as its largest shareholder.

Summly’s other investors, improbably enough, included Rupert Murdoch’s wife, Wendi; Ashton Kutcher; and Yoko Ono.

The most important one was Hong Kong billionaire Li Ka-shing, whose investment fund supported D’Aloisio’s idea early.

“They took a gamble on me when I was a 15-year-old,” D’Aloisio said, by providing seed financing that let him hire employees and lease office space.

Summly officially came online in November. By December, D’Aloisio was talking to Yahoo and other suitors.

Yahoo said in a statement that while the Summly app would be shut down, “we will acquire the technology and you’ll see it come to life throughout Yahoo’s mobile experiences soon.”

In the meantime, when not working at Yahoo, D’Aloisio will keep up with his hobbies — cricket in particular — and set his sights on attending college at Oxford.

Politics / We Made Mistakes In 2011 Elections –INEC Boss by Orpelin: 1:10am On Mar 26, 2013
Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Attahiru Jega, yesterday admitted that the 2011 elections were marred by mistakes, saying such would not repeat itself in 2015. Jega, featuring on Radio Nigeria, Kaduna National Station’s Hausa programme, Hanu Dayawa, said the commission had introduced new changes that would ensure free and transparent elections in future.
On the controversy surrounding the registration of All Progressives Congress (APC), the INEC boss said no political party had notified the commission of merger talks, much less registration.
His words: “We are doing our best to ensure that the mistakes we made in the past are corrected. We are trying to introduce new things to bring about change in the system.
“This issue has generated controversy in the past few weeks. First, the truth is that no political party had written to notify us that it is planning to merge with some other political parties until the past five days or so. “Therefore, it is not true that we had been notified.
The issue became serious when one group came out to seek for registration, I guess that was what made them to write and notify us.” He added: “We are doing our best to ensure that the 2015 elections will be more credible than that of 2011 We have been working hard towards this. We have reviewed the past and are looking at what we can do to improve on our performances.”
Jega, however, denied collecting money from politicians. “People have said a lot of things on this. I have not collected money from anybody and I didn’t go to INEC to collect money from politicians. If I wanted money, with the education that God has given me and other means, I would have used them to make the money,” he said.

Foreign Affairs / Lebanese Prime Minister Resigns Amid Political Dispute With Hezbollah by Orpelin: 2:34pm On Mar 23, 2013
Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati announced his
government’s resignation Friday, a move that could deeply
destabilize the country at a time when the conflict in
neighboring Syria is increasingly spilling across the border.
The announcement by Mikati, which was broadcast live on
local TV stations, followed a stormy cabinet session in which the militant Shiite group Hezbollah and its allies blocked the formation of a committee to supervise upcoming parliamentary elections and refused to support a term extension for Lebanon’s police chief.
Hezbollah not only commands a large, well-trained militia,
widely seen as the most powerful military force in the country, but also is a key player in Lebanese politics and runs a broad social services network.
“I announce the resignation of the government, hoping that this will open the way for the major political blocs to take
responsibility and come together to bring Lebanon out of the unknown,” Mikati said, according to Agence France-Presse.
Mikati’s decision comes amid tremendous pressure on his
country from the conflict next door, as rival Lebanese political factions square off inside Syria: Lebanese Sunni militants are fighting for the Syrian opposition, while Hezbollah fighters battle on behalf of the government of President Bashar al- Assad, who belongs to the Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shiism.
Syria’s military is also staging increasingly bold attacks on
Lebanese soil, targeting what it says are support lines for the
opposition across the border. On Monday, Syrian jets bombed a remote area of northern Lebanon for the first time.
The infrastructure in Lebanon, meanwhile, is under strain
following the arrival in the past two years of 400,000 Syrian
refugees an influx representing about a 10 percent increase in the country’s population.
Without clear political leadership, Lebanon could face serious sectarian violence sparked by the conflict in Syria, analysts say.
“All the country is fragile and is subject to any security breach now,” said Elias Farhat, a political analyst and retired general. Clashes linked to the Syrian war flared in the northern Lebanese city of Tripoli on Friday between fighters from the Sunni and Alawite communities, a development that Mikati, who is Sunni and a native of Tripoli, noted in his resignation speech.
One of the main points of contention in the cabinet meeting
Friday was the extension of the tenure of police chief Ashraf
Rifi, who faces mandatory retirement April 1. Mikati has stood strongly by Rifi, who is Sunni, while Hezbollah and its political allies have opposed an extension of his term, a stance that the group’s critic say has sectarian motives.
Mikati’s critics, particularly the opposition coalition known as March 14th, have long accused the prime minister of being a Hezbollah stooge after he accepted the top post in 2011. But his resignation on Friday showed that he would not follow Hezbollah’s lead at any price, analysts say.
Mikati must now present his resignation letter on Saturday to President Michel Suleiman, who must call a parliamentary
session to name a new premier. Even if a successor is named by early next week, the process of forming a new government could drag on for months, analysts say.

Celebrities / Rihanna Keeps Her Student Waiting Over 4 Hours For A 16min Show by Orpelin: 1:35pm On Mar 23, 2013
Rihanna Shows Up At School Nearly 5 Hours Late And Stays 16 minutes
Superstar Rihanna was due to appear at a suburban Chicago high school after students there won a contest she sponsored that had kids create a video set to one of her songs. But things didn't go as scheduled.
Some 2,500 people were packed in the Barrington High School gym for her 1 p.m. scheduled appearance on Thursday, but she wasn't there yet. She wasn't there at 2 p.m. or 3 p.m. either. She showed up more than 4 1/2 hours late, the Chicago Tribune reported, and said little about her tardiness. "Thank you guys for coming and waiting," the Tribune quoted her as saying.
Then she spoke about the charitable works of Barrington that were highlighted in the video they made to her song "Diamonds."
The Tribune said she stayed for 16 minutes, took some pictures with some lucky students and then left. The school's principal reported that he had spoken to her before she got to the school and she apologized for being late and sent more tickets to her Chicago show.
Some of the kids were unamused. The Tribune quoted seventh- grader Jaki Mora as saying: "Rihanna is pathetic. She shouldn't be making us wait for her."

Politics / Intermittent Power Cut Forces NASS To Adjourn Plenary by Orpelin: 9:45pm On Mar 20, 2013
The House of Representatives was on Wednesday 20th March 2013, forced to adjourn its plenary session due to intermittent power cuts which affected the public address system of the House.
Speaker of the House Hon. Aminu Tambuwal who presided over the day’s proceedings had to defer the session till tomorrow, thusday 21st March 2013.
The lawmakers were considering the report of the House
Committee on Health on a Bill for an Act to repeal the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) Act of 1999 and re-enact the National Health Insurance Commission and approve the recommendations herein.
While briefing journalists about the bill recently Hon. Elumelu had said NHIS as presently constituted could not provide universal insurance cover Nigerians. He explained that: “In order for the National Health
Insurance Scheme (NHIS) to cover the entire nation, there is a need for the establishment of a National Health Insurance Commission which would serve as the regulatory body.”

Foreign Affairs / US Army Officer Accused Of Passing Nuclear Secrets To China by Orpelin: 11:23am On Mar 20, 2013
A Hawaii-based US defense contractor is facing charges for giving classified defense information, including top secret information about nuclear weapons, to a 27-year-old Chinese woman that he had a romantic interest in.
Benjamin Pierce Bishop, a 59-year-old Army Reserve lieutenant colonel who works as a civilian employee of a defense contractor at the US Pacific Command, was arrested at the command’s headquarters on Friday. He is scheduled to appear in court this week where a judge will decide whether he will remain locked up throughout his case.
The US District Court in Honolulu is prosecuting the man for an email he sent to the Chinese woman, detailing America’s war plans, nuclear weapons stockpile and the country’s relations with foreign partners. The court also alleges that Bishop told the young woman about the deployment of US strategic nuclear systems and the government’s ballistic missiles detection capabilities, according to the complaint.
The transmission of this information to foreign nationals could cause “serious danger to US national security,” the complaint reads.
Bishop is being charged with one count of deliberately relaying national defense information to someone not qualified to receive it, as well as one count of unlawfully retaining national defense documents. If convicted, he faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison.
The defense contractor first met the 27-year-old Chinese national during a conference on international military defense issues in Hawaii. The woman had been living in the US on a student visa. The affidavit notes that the woman “represented to Bishop that she did not want him to disclose classified information to her,” but then “continued over time to question Bishop on matters relating to the subject of his work.” From May 2011 until December 2012, he allegedly relayed classified national defense information to her and became romantically involved with her starting June 2011.
FBI documents submitted Feb. 5 claim that the Chinese woman “tasked Bishop to conduct research for her… regarding what Western nations know about… a particular naval asset of the People’s Republic of China.”
Bishop has also gone to great lengths to keep his relationship with the woman a secret. When he requested leave to visit the woman in the United Kingdom, he changed her surname to make it sound masculine and to hide her identity, court documents state.
Bishop has been appointed with an attorney since he cannot
afford to pay for his own defense at this time. After the contractor received his charges on Monday, his attorney, Birney Bervar, told reporters that the man would never intentionally try to put the US in harm’s way.
“Col. Bishop has served this country for 29 years. He would
never do anything to harm the United States,” he told reporters.
The case is particularly alarming to the US government,
considering that China and the US have long engaged in spying against one another. Last year, China arrested a state security official who was suspected of providing information to the US.
The incident was considered the most serious case of espionage since the 1980s.
Court officials have not publicly named the Chinese woman who received information from Bishop, and refer to her as “PERSON 1” in the affidavit.

Foreign Affairs / Russia Invites Isreal Prime Minister For Talks by Orpelin: 11:13am On Mar 20, 2013
An Israeli official says the country’s prime minister has been formally invited to Russia.
He says Benjamin Netanyahu received a letter Wednesday from Russian President Vladimir Putin inviting him to visit Moscow ‘‘for discussions.’’
Talks about Iran’s nuclear program and violence in Syria are likely on the agenda. Syria has good relations with Israel’s arch foes Iran and Syria.
Israel and Russia enjoy generally friendly ties, and have deep
economic and cultural relations bolstered by the more than 1
million immigrants from the former Soviet Union who live here. Putin visited Israel last year.
Netanyahu has not yet responded to the invitation, the official said speaking on condition of anonymity according to protocol.
Putin also congratulated Netanyahu on forming his new
government, he said.

Foreign Affairs / Venezuela To Auction US Dollars For Businesses by Orpelin: 10:16am On Mar 20, 2013
Venezuela's government plans to auction dollars to private businesses that sell food, medicine and other basic goods amid widespread shortages.
Planning Minister Jorge Giordani said Tuesday the initiative aims to provide such sectors the dollars they need to import goods.
Products such as flour, coffee and butter have disappeared from store shelves in recent months.
Venezuela has maintained strict currency controls since 2003, creating a black market that now sells dollars at over triple the official rate of 6.3 bolivars. Falling oil exports and foreign investment have helped dry up the dollar supply.
The auctions starting next week will begin with bidding at the
official exchange rate but could sell dollars for much more. The sale price will be set at an average of the highest bids, said a Central Bank official, who was not authorized to speak about the matter and asked not to be identified.
Another government-operated currency exchange system sells dollars to individuals and businesses but only at the official rate.
