being: You need to communicate clearer- what's d meaning of bond decision measurements? How can u measure a decision - is it a quantity? What d heck is marginal rate? Deir is rate of returns, yield rate, coupon rate but not marginal rate! I also thought as much o. My supervisor changed my topic to include bond investment decisions in Nigeria. I became confused, and that led me to looking for its proxy. I later used annual average dividend yields to represent it. Thanks for your assistance sir, I so much appreciate. |

Somebody help please, it's urgent! How can one measure bond investment decisions in one's model? I thought of using investment rate but it seems there's no data for such...
On the other hand, CBN publishes data on the Marginal Rate of FGN Bonds, but I don't know if it's that of the sales. Should I use that instead? |

Politics › Re: Governance: The 3 Most Unlucky States In Nigeria by Ortarico(m): 9:01am On Mar 30, 2017 |
Bekwarra: I don't want to call them unfortunate because that will be too harsh thus I used unlucky. But these states just happen to replace one terrible governor with a worse one especially since the start of this democratic dispensation in 1999. I don't know the cause; maybe it's predestination, a dearth of good leaders, the people making wrong decisions or a combination of these factors. The states I will group in this category are
1. Benue: From George Akume to Gabriel Suswan and now Samuel Ortom, the state seems to be richly "unblessed" with visionary and good leaders as governors. For a state that pridye itself as the food basket of the nation, it should be feeding a large swathe of Southern Nigeria and the middle belt with agricultural products while also taking over some food markets in West African countries. Unfortunately, agriculture in Benue is still largely subsistence. Where is the government support to empower farmers, where are the Hundreds of large farms that should be dotting the landscape? What happened to attracting huge investments in the area of processing some of these products into finished goods? Have you taken Benue orange before? Where are the juice making companies to harness these? Mechanized farming still remain a luxury to the people. What about having a state owned cargo airport to move out some farm products? Where are the good roads to move products from the villages to the towns for onward processing and transportation? I can go on and on. What is the poverty level in Benue? Security? Herdsmen? Level of development?
2. Kogi: Governance in Kogi state is nothing to write home about. Nothing is happening in that state as far as development is concerned. How many times have you seen Kogi in the news for any ground breaking developmental project? We get to see Lagos, Anambra, Rivers, Kano and even Osun. Kogi governors can't maximise the strategic location of the state bordering many states and located at the central part of the country. Like a Kogi-born friend once told me, the only thriving economy in Kogi state is politics. The state capital looks like a modern village, no good roads, no industries. Nothing is happening in that state. Can't think outside the box. Imagine having Abubakar Audi, Idris Wada and now Yahaya Bello as governors. Can a state be more "unblessed"?
3. Abia: This state is a sorry case. Despite being blessed with smart and hardworking people with great spirits of entrepreneurship, of is still so underdeveloped. There are no good roads and recognisable development that can be commensurate with the human resources the state is blessed with. Their governors are just their to loot. Just imagine if Aba is located in Lagos, it would have easily become West Africa's commercial and economic hub generating billions of Naira to the government.
Notable mentions- Kwara and Delta.

Business › Re: Bonds Investment, How Does It Really Work In Practice? by Ortarico(op): 9:25am On Feb 02, 2017 |
being: Basics: A bond is a debt to an issuer or a debt investment to a buyer. They can have a tenor of as long as 50 years. Coupon - semi annual interest payment. A coupon of 8% means you get a payment of 4% of the face value of d bond every 6 months. face value: Amount you get back on maturity of investment. The coupon is also based on this. Premium: A bond of facevalue of #100 sold at109 was sold at a premium. Discount: A bond of face value of #100 sold for below #100 was sold at a discount. Discount is opposite to premium. Par: A bond of face value of #60 sold for #60 was sold at par.
There are FGN Bonds & Corporate bonds. FGN Bonds are issued by d federal govt. Corporate bonds are issued by companies. They can be denominated in naira or dollars(euro bonds) Yield: Total expected inflows minus total outflow all over total outflow. Now total outflow is cost of buying the Bond(either at premium or discount). Total inflows = total coupons over tenor of bond + facevalue of bond( u know u get this facevalue back on maturity)
The higher the inflation rate, the higher the yield of a bond should be. It doesn't make sense that my investment has a lower purchasing power after maturity than before start date. Thank you Sir. Thus, my deductions: • Bonds are debt instruments, can be sold at par, discount or premium. • Coupons are biannual interest payments. • Yields are mathematically defined. • Bond investment is positively correlated with inflation. Questions: • Where are FGN bonds traded? Is it over the counter (OTC) at the stock market according to theory, or at the debt management office (DMO)? • How are the bond rates ascertained? Is it the MPR that is used, as I read it somewhere or ruling body/authority? |

Wow, I'm happy to have stumbled upon this thread. I've been seeking for better enlightenments into the workings of the FGN Bonds. My questions are as follows:
1. Where are they traded? Is it over the counter (OTC) at the stock market as in theory, or at the DMO as read here?
2. How is the coupon/bond rate determined? Is it the MPR that is used, as I read it somewhere?
3. How do bond rates induce or discourage investment?
Also, I need articles/journals on bond rates and inflation dynamics. Where can I source for them? |
