SOZINN: Peaky Blinders was very good for me once you pay attention to the dialogue and have a little understanding of the 1900s times in the UK. It isn't all about action, but I still understand that we have varying tastes in shows. That's more reason why you need to mention your own base rate. Mention one or two shows you found very appealing, then we can have an idea of where you're coming from. 1 Like |

Streetinvestor2: I don't see any pumping here. The dollar has increased in value by more than 60%, so it is normal to record huge paper gains and substantial interest income on foreign investments. That is precisely what we are observing, nothing more. If I were asked to present my own version of "hopeville", I would say that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) already anticipated this situation, which is why they made such substantial requests, and the banks did not object because they knew the results would unfold in this manner. In other words, once the Naira plunged in value, it was a near certainty that these excess gains would materialize. 1 Like |

ojesymsym: Why is that so? Did you catch any inaccuracies in my mini-lecture? It is simple enough. All over the world, when purchasing government treasury bills, you don't pay the face value; you pay the discounted value. Then, at maturity, you get the face value. So, paying the face value and getting a discount on the bid day in Nigerian banks is actually what I explained. The other point is about yield. Whether it's a treasury bill or any other form of investment, the yield is the return divided by the investment. Don't come here and badmouth my consultancy business if you don't have any reason to do so. You don't need to like me, okay? 2 Likes |

lajid: Now, pay attention to my mini masterclass in personal finance. You invested 100,000 in Treasury Bills at a 16% discount rate. They pay 16,000 upfront (that is, at the start of the tenure, they return 16,000 to you). Effectively, they collected 84,000 from you, and at the end of the tenure, they pay you 100,000 (they call this the face value). Now, pay attention very carefully, I am about to say something very important. Yield is the extra money you get divided by initial investment. You invested 84,000 for the tenure and got an extra 16,000. The yield should be 19%, while the discount rate is 16%. There will be a final exam on Monday. 8 Likes |

Johnwrite: I believe someone here said, "Follow the money." Learn to use clues from information like these to draw reasonable conclusions. The more confusing the situation, the better. Remember that everyone has access to the same information as you, and will probably act on it, sweeping any informational advantage off the table. It is often the confusing information that gives you an advantage if you manage to position yourself on the right side. 3 Likes |

222Martins: Read the notes and you will find out that it is still due to foreign exchange losses, about 7 billion naira. I noticed that companies that avoided reporting the foreign exchange losses in their annual results did so in this first quarter. I mean manufacturing companies. Service companies like NAHCO and some others didn't have this problem. One exception is MTNN; it reported these losses in both reports. |

Streetinvestor2: No, that was not the issue. Revenue increased by almost 40%, while gross profit increased by 60%. In my opinion, NASCON performed very well. The problem lies with the exchange rate losses. 1 Like

Mrshape: I think they may have wanted to test a few skills, even though there is no standard sin 40°, and it is not easy to get it with a trigonometric identity either. Then, you should have calculated for sin 30° and sin 45°. The area should be somewhere in between but closer to sin 45°. After that, go through the answers to see which one satisfies these inequalities. 16 Likes 1 Share |

To make the statement "Alhaji will not allow the price fall because he wants to retain his Forbes ranking.....Even when it is glaring that the NS/DS price is falling rapidly" evidence-based rather than blind hopefulness, several things would be required: 1. Factual evidence that "Alhaji" has the power and mechanisms to directly influence or control the price of the assets in question (NS/DS). 2. Clear documentation or public statements from "Alhaji" explicitly stating that retaining their Forbes ranking is a top priority that would motivate actions to support the asset's price. 3. Data showing "Alhaji's" past actions successfully arresting price declines of this asset (or other assets) when their wealth rankings were at risk. 4. Analysis of "Alhaji's" current net worth position and how preventing this particular asset's price fall is critical to maintaining their Forbes ranking. 5. Information on the specific strategies, financial resources, and legal means "Alhaji" could employ to prop up the price despite market forces. Similarly, to make the hypothesis "The Brewery industry did not rally upwards in 2023, when compared to other sectors on the NGX.....So it is already down and needs fear no fall" evidence-based, the following would be required: 1. Factual market data showing the performance of the Brewery industry stocks/sector on the NGX (Nigerian Stock Exchange) in 2023 compared to other sectors. 2. Analysis and quantification of how much the Brewery sector underperformed or "did not rally upwards" relative to the other sectors. 3. Research on the typical behavior and patterns of sectors/industries that have underperformed the broader market in a given year. Do they tend to continue underperforming or recover in subsequent years? 4. Fundamental analysis of the Brewery companies to assess if their current stock prices/valuations already reflect the underperformance in 2023. In other words, are they now "already down"? 5. Examination of the overall economic factors, consumer trends, competitive landscape etc. that could impact the Brewery sector's prospects going forward. 6. Study of historical cases where underperforming sectors saw either a continuation of negative returns or a rebound/recovery. |

222Martins: I understand your logic that we have "well-reasoned speculation" (informed, logically-derived forecasting) and "blind hopefulness" (baseless wishful thinking). The problem is that you are not doing any better. Read these two statements carefully: "Alhaji will not allow the price fall because he wants to retain his Forbes ranking.....Even when it is glaring that the NS/DS price is falling rapidly" and "The Brewery industry did not rally upwards in 2023, when compared to other sectors on the NGX.....So it is already down and needs fear no fall." They both belong to the same category... 5 Likes |

222Martins: Why don't you take the time to look up the meaning of hope in the dictionary? I don't blame you for not understanding the word. Out of the four reasons you gave, only number one is factual (though I haven't confirmed this); the rest are based on hope. Reason 2: "The Brewery industry did not rally upwards in 2023, when compared to other sectors on the NGX.....So it is already down and needs fear no fall." This reason assumes that because the industry did not rally in 2023, it is less likely to fall further. This is more of a hopeful assumption rather than a fact-based analysis. Reason 3: A possible buyout from Raysun: While Raysun's past acquisitions are a positive indicator, there's no guarantee they'll target ChampBrew. This reason relies on the hope that a buyout will happen. Reason 4: Possible turnaround of the company: This reason hinges on the company improving its performance, which is uncertain. You're hoping that ChampBrew's dominance in its region will translate to a turnaround. 11 Likes |

alezzy13: I received 190,674 naira for one million naira invested at FirstBank for 364 days, which I think amounts to approximately 19% interest rate. Although I saw the official rate advertised as 20.7%, they must have deducted tax and other costs. It has been a long time since I last invested in treasury bills. 1 Like |

They key points of the DS announcement: *Previously Announced Merger: On July 31, 2023, DSR announced a proposed merger with NASCON and DRL through a "Scheme of Merger." *Merger on Hold: The announcement states that the merging entities have agreed to suspend the merger "for the time being." *Reason for Suspension: The Securities & Exchange Commission's (SEC) recommendation regarding the status of Dangote Rice Limited (DRL) is cited as the reason for the suspension. The nature of the SEC's recommendation is not specified. *Future Communication: The announcement assures the investing public and regulators that further information will be provided "in due course." This is where reading between the lines comes in. For those who bought in at 60 naira or higher, Pa Ema, myself, and a few others were advocating for this stock way back when it was at 18, 23, and so on. The key is to act sooner, not wait until a stock has already risen 50% before jumping on board. 2 Likes |
