What Would I Do Differently If I Had to Start My Business Again?

If I had to go back to the beginning and start my business all over again, knowing what I know today, I would still choose business.

But I would do many things differently.

I have learned that working hard is not enough. Experience is not enough. Having good products is not enough.

The business environment in Nigeria is demanding, and many businesses are under pressure from rising operating costs, weaker purchasing power and increasing competition.

If I had another opportunity to start from zero, these are some of the things I would change.

1. I would think about SCALE from day one

When you are starting, your biggest concern is usually:

> "How do I make today's sale?"



I understand that.

But I would have asked myself much earlier:

> "How can I build a business that can make 10 times what I am making today without requiring 10 times my personal effort?"



That question changes everything.

I would have focused earlier on systems, distribution, bulk supply, corporate customers, recurring customers and partnerships.

2. I would separate the business from myself

At the beginning, the owner does everything.

You sell.

You negotiate.

You buy.

You deliver.

You answer WhatsApp.

You solve customer complaints.

You keep the records.

You advertise.

You even become the accountant.

The problem is that eventually you become the limitation of your own business.

Today, I understand that a business must eventually be able to operate through systems and people—not just the energy of the founder.

3. I would take financial records more seriously

Revenue can make you feel successful.

But revenue is not profit.

And profit is not cash flow.

I would have started much earlier with proper records showing:

Cost of goods

Gross profit

Operating expenses

Cash flow

Debtors

Stock value

Monthly profit

Personal withdrawals


Financial management and cash-flow control are repeatedly identified as important factors in SME survival in Nigeria.

4. I would build a customer database from the beginning

Every customer should become an asset.

Not in the sense of exploiting them—but in the sense of building a relationship.

I would have recorded:

Name → Phone → Business → Products bought → Date → Value → What they may need next.

Because the customer who bought one laptop today may need:

10 laptops next year.

A printer next month.

Monitors later.

Networking equipment.

Office equipment.

Maintenance.

Accessories.

The real opportunity is not always in the first transaction.

5. I would focus on B2B much earlier

Retail teaches you how to sell.

B2B teaches you how to build volume.

If I were starting again, I would deliberately target:

SMEs

Schools

Churches

Hotels

NGOs

Hospitals

Corporate organizations

Government contractors

Startups

Offices opening new branches


Instead of asking only:

> "Who wants to buy a laptop?"



I would ask:

> "Who needs technology equipment regularly?"



That is a completely different question.

6. I would build the brand earlier

I would not wait until the business became "big enough" before investing in branding.

I would establish from day one:

Who are we?
Who do we serve?
What do we specialize in?
Why should customers trust us?
What do we want to become?

Today, customers can check a business online before buying, and digital presence, useful content and customer interaction increasingly matter to Nigerian SMEs.

7. I would stop chasing every opportunity

This one is painful.

When you are hungry for growth, every opportunity looks attractive.

But not every opportunity deserves your money.

Not every product deserves your stock.

Not every customer deserves your time.

Not every business idea deserves your attention.

I would have learned much earlier to ask:

> "Does this move me toward the business I am trying to build?"



If the answer is no, I would walk away.

8. I would reinvest with a clear strategy

There is a difference between reinvesting and simply putting money back into stock.

I would ask:

What will this ₦1 million do for the business?

Will it:

Increase turnover?

Improve margins?

Open a new market?

Create recurring revenue?

Increase distribution?

Improve efficiency?


If I cannot answer those questions, I would think twice before spending the money.

9. I would build relationships, not just transactions

Some of the biggest opportunities in business don't come from advertising.

They come from people.

Suppliers.

Customers.

Agents.

Corporate procurement officers.

Business owners.

Contractors.

Professionals.

Friends in other industries.

People who know someone who needs what you sell.

I would deliberately build my network from the beginning.

10. Most importantly, I would understand that being busy is not the same as progressing

This may be the biggest lesson.

You can open your shop every day.

Answer hundreds of messages.

Make sales.

Deliver products.

Solve problems.

Work late.

And still remain almost exactly where you were five years ago.

Because activity is not necessarily progress.

The question should not only be:

> "How hard am I working?"



It should also be:

> "What is all this work building?"

I wouldn't necessarily work harder.

I would think differently.

I would build systems earlier.

I would understand numbers earlier.

I would focus on scalable customers earlier.

I would build relationships earlier.

I would document everything.

I would build a stronger brand.

And I would constantly ask myself:

> "Am I building a business that depends on me, or a business that can eventually work without me?"



Because starting a business is one achievement.
