I cannot drop my number here but I may send you an email on the condition that you DON'T ask me questions like how did I get my job or where you can get a job slot. Strictly professional self development conversations.

Am thinking about runing my masters and beciming a lecturer
The way people are castigating the course self dey make me think say i make wrong choice

I am in academics, not in your field though. Getting there is very difficult. Its like getting a federal government job slot. And more difficult because lecturers are paid better than civil servants of the same level. I hope that you are on at least, 2:1? You need to realise that everyone in pub admin, sociology, pol science etc wants to lecture. And 90% of you are on 2:2. Competition is crazy. Don't sit there and think that lecturing is an easy way out. It will end in tears oo.
My advice to you is to learn a skill. I am also into farming among other things. Even if na mechanic it is better. Many people were sacked when lockdown started but plumbers and electricians were still going about their business fixing TVs and blocked toilets. We Nigerians like going to school like water because it is cheap. Many people here who are giving you hope will not tell you how much they paid to get the slot. Some of them are from influential families. Some are even on first class, but they're here giving you hope and you too you're happy.

Yes I am,

The exchange is getting lower ie naira is getting stronger in parallel market against the dollar.

Bamboo is a reflection of what is happening in the parallel market

CBN announced that they will resume selling dollars to BDCs for them to sell at 386 naira to a dollar. So guys that bought dollars in other to resell for gains are currently rushing to sell off while demand is very low since it will soon be available at 386.

So if anyone plans to deposit more money, they should wait till end of the week to see how things go.

Any indications it will go back up?

Many studies agree that a stop loss order between 15% to 20% is suitable and anything outside this range will likely end in a loss. It's your call ma'am.

There is nothing wrong with the stock fundamentally. Technically, it has been ranging btw 110 and 150 for sometime now. So profit taking is expected combined with panic sellers, day traders etc.

Am holding long term though. So am observing till Friday, if it dips below 100 will buy and average down.

18% cry cryThat means you bought btw 130 and 140??

I just want to profer advice to the newbies here. Some "gurus" use demo accounts to show their gains. Some show gains in only one stock and will not show you losses for their portfolio as a whole. Some will show you gains for one day and one stock while the week/month as a whole is in red. I am happy for the genuine day traders making bag. It's not easy to be alert 24/7 doing technical analysis and being on the edge over your trades. I have been there and I know how it feels, we're all trying to survive, so I am not referring to you. I am referring to the impressionable newbies and dishonest gurus who are deliberately pushing a different narrative of day trading. I decided to stop commenting when someone here recommended Gold/silver ETFs because they're not too volatile. I will gradually limit my contribution here or stop commenting if I can, so that I don't offend anyone here. But like 4play said earlier, fact is fact.

The thing with dividend yield is that it is not constant as it is derived from the share price per time.
A 10% dividend yield stock in March that has recovered from the negative effect of the pandemic will no longer be 10% in today's price.

I once hunted a REIT stock with a dividend yield as high as 14% around March/April because the price was beat down badly.
With the price recovery that most stocks have enjoyed after March, the dividend yield is much lower.

As you may know, the dividend yield of a stock is calculated by dividing the most recent dividend per share by the share price, multiplied by 100.

If you can share what stock you saw at 10% yield, we can confirm what the present yield is.

One key criteria for picking the "dividend kings" I mentioned about sharing in my earlier post is that the company must meet some common criteria.
This includes having dividend yields greater than 3%, payout ratios of less than 75% (or less than 100% for REITs), three-year average dividend growth of at least 5% and a minimum market cap of $1 billion.

The quietness in the room today is understandably a correlation of the seemingly flat market sentiment so far.

But we are here and exist not only when there is excitement of upward price movement, but to continue to develop and equip ourselves in order to take full advantage of what the market offers.

So a few updates and insights for dividend hunters today.
QUARTERLY DIVIDEND UPDATE
First off, $FDX declared a quarterly dividend of $0.65/share payable October 1st 2020.
This was on the back of a very good earnings which led the market to price it up to a new 52-week high This week.
At a share price of over $200/share, that drastically reduces the dividend yield to a mere 1.29%.

A reasonably priced stock which is a consistent dividend player available today before the Monday ex dividend date is $PSX at just over $63/share declared a quarterly dividend of $0.90/share at a reasonable 5.62% dividend yield. Their payment date is September 1st 2020.

There are "dividend kings" that pay as high as 8% yield even at current market prices.
I hope I find the time to share some with us.
#ThinkOnTheseThings

I have seen a stock that pays above 10% and I was discouraged from buying it. Can you throw more light on this please?

As YerYer pointed out, in this up trending market, most people should be able to make money. There are a couple of problems - one specific to traders here and a more general issue.

Many here seem to trade the extremely volatile stocks promoted by the Naija fintech apps. I suspect those trading these stocks experience more frequent losses than would be the case if you're trading higher quality, but less volatile, stocks.

The second more general, and most important, problem is the long run return on stock investments by retail investors is poor relative to the broad index (e.g S&P 500) returns. This is why I have suggested indexes! In an up trending market, most of us are "gurus". But since we're all, I presume, relatively young and hope to successfully invest for decades, we need to invest (form good investment habits) in a way that will allow us thrive over 10/20/30 years. This is where I fear these overly rose-tinted posts about short-term wins can damage investors' ability to last the distance. People will increasingly be lured into putting their savings into this 5g or EV stock or the other high-tech name and find themselves trapped without warning. It may take months or years but it will eventually happen when we least expect it.

Spot on. Everyone is a genius in a bull market. From my little experience, I've been able to identify the big players and what I use to measure their performance is how much they lose when the market is down, relative to how much the s&p 500, dow, Nasdaq, etc are losing. For example, if the dow is down by 0.5% for this month and my portfolio is down by 20%, that means that I need to restructure my portfolio.

I want to get to the stage where I check my online brokerage account just 2 times a day. Trump could tweet something silly from his toilet seat at midnight and the covid stock you expected to make returns from has nosedived before the market opens. I value my peace of mind and although this wasn't how I started, I am beginning to anchor my portfolio with bond ETFs and mid cap value stocks.

From many indications, we may be experiencing a bubble at the moment and someone needs to be ready. I also need to divert my energy towards other little little projects that I have.

Haaaa, is full disclosure not necessary?

If people come here and see gain, gain, gains & 'gains' they will think all trading is indeed about gains and no loss. grin

loss dey oooo

Exactly. It's not discouragement, it's reality. There are some days your losses will exceed your gains. There are some years that you will make nothing. This is even for investors who are supposed to have it better. Day traders experience more losses and their eyes dey see pepper. But when they strike gold, their harvests are bountiful.

The best thing to invest in is yourself. Find different hustles and multiple streams of income and then contribute into stocks with strong fundamentals. That is what the rich do. They're off playing golf somewhere and only look at their portfolio like twice a day. That was how they started because it is a habit you need to have early.

I have attached a screenshot showing the average returns of the S&P 500 over more than 1 decade. There are some years that your returns are negative. Few people have been able to outperform the s&p 500. The s&p 500 are 500 of the largest companies in the U.S.

Best option is if you're lucky to get a job here. Even if na labourer or factory work it is better. Somebody should help the OP. You will now look for an elderly person or religious leader around you and confess to them. Let them follow you to your mum and confess to her and calm her down. Then you will introduce your boss to your mother and make them pay part of your salary to your mother over a period of time until you finish paying. She will need to change access to that bank account and give the ATM card to the elderly person who is helping you settle the case. She will need to disable mobile money transfer and any other applications that have made it easy for you to access the money.

As soon as earnings call day is approaching, set your account to sell stocks if they drop below a certain amount. Especially these new companies that are still loss making. I learned that the hard way, it is well.

Making money from investing relies on 2 Cs. Contributions and compounding. The idea behind how people like Buffet made their money is by contributing with little to no withdrawals. Once you withdraw you have interrupted the process.

Hi Ovasabi1.
Two hands up for you

What’s your opinion on short term investors?
What’s your preference, short or long term?

For new investors, you mentioned that it is not a good time to invest in stocks as a result of prices on a high. What do you suggest we do?

Thanks thanks

Short term investing can make you prone to emotional stock picking, greed, FOMO (fear of missing out), JIJO (jump in, jump out). Instead of investing in yourself to improve your earning capacity, in order to create multiple streams of income, short term investing gives you the believe and impression that it can be your only source of income. It can discourage a person to diversify their portfolio because you will prefer to put all your money on one stock so that you can make excessive millions at once, instead of building it up gradually.

In a wall street journal study from the 2000s a blindfolded monkey was given a dart to pick stocks over a period of time and it outperformed seasoned financial analysts who were investing in single stocks. What this means is that short term investing in single stocks is almost like gambling.

https://www.wsj.com/articles/SB991681622136214659

It is potentially addictive and can turn you into a vengeful person who is trying to get back at the market for making you lose your money.
However, there's a rule that if you want to go short term on single stocks, you can dedicate a small portion of your portfolio into that.

For me, there's no best time to invest because I believe that if you're in it long term, the compounding effect will offset most downturns. But if you are seeking short term returns, it may be better to be a bit certain about some fundamentals.

The best way I can explain it is just imagine your favourite food and what can make you reject this food. Either you are full from eating previously or you're sick.
No matter how much you pump some stocks with good news and other fundamentals, they cannot go above a certain level. Again the company may be "sick" because it is still loss making. Also, it seems it hasn't been assigned a Beta value yet. This is another sign of weak "immunity" for stocks. Again it is a young company. Many times when earnings call day is approaching, the stock price is overvalued due to anticipation. In this case, you can say that the stock is full from eating previously.
