Nobody is going to shut down the economy, vaccine or not.

The market would continue its momentum till close to elections. This has always been the case every election year. And with the Feds saying they would so whatever it takes, no wahala.

As per tech, anybody buying into tech should be doing so for long term. But if you wan sell , no wahala , e go give us juicy pickings.

Anything that would limit face to face communications/transactions, reduce money spent on renting office or paying people ; or the energy (fossil fuels) is here for the long term.

I didn't say anything is shutting down the economy and I am talking to short term investors who will be taken aback by a potential loss.

Why has $FASTLY been tanking very hard despite positive ER?

The best way I can explain it is just imagine your favourite food and what can make you reject this food. Either you are full from eating previously or you're sick.
No matter how much you pump some stocks with good news and other fundamentals, they cannot go above a certain level. Again the company may be "sick" because it is still loss making. Also, it seems it hasn't been assigned a Beta value yet. This is another sign of weak "immunity" for stocks. Again it is a young company. Many times when earnings call day is approaching, the stock price is overvalued due to anticipation. In this case, you can say that the stock is full from eating previously.

Good day everyone, I am a newbie to stocks. I have gone through most of the pages and it is quite overwhelming. I don't even know where to start from. Can anyone suggest a place to start? Books? Articles? Videos? Suggestions on affordable stocks to buy as a beginner? Etc. Thanks all.

Step 1. Decide what you want out of the stock market. Do you want to be a day trader or a long term investor? Please take note that the glamour of day trading is enticing but it has been proven many times that day traders make less returns than long term investors.
2. What kind of risk are you willing to take? Remember that high risks mean higher gains or losses. How do you determine risky stocks? I use fundamental analysis. A company with a high Beta, high debts and negative EPS are some of the metrics I use to measure risk. I also compare quarterly returns, search for earnings call days and set an alarm on my calendar. For example, I have a covid stock $OSUR that I intend to offload today due to their unfavourable earnings. Also, they deviated from their Covid-19 testing plan. This is even one of the reasons I am selling it. Please, look at a company's 1, 2, 3, 7, 10 year stock gains before buying it.
3. You have to download Yahoo Finance, search for "Dave Ramsey on stocks" on YouTube and watch everything he has to say about stocks. Use these websites: The Mortely Fool, Market Watch and Globe News Wire have provided great analysis. Find the Twitter pages of the single stocks you want to buy. Not just this, search for hashtags of the "ticker" of this company. Open an account with Reddit and follow these sub reddits: investing, wall street bets, penny stocks and stocks. If you can understand what he says, follow Jim Cramer. But he flip flops, just get the information you want out of all the jargon.
4. Be a disciplined person. Don't be easily swayed by people claiming to be making extraordinary returns. My target is to make above the rate of inflation and some change. If I exceed this target, it is a bonus I am grateful for. I am happy for anyone who makes far above me, it is not a competition because we're all trying to survive. Never ever feel like you have missed out on any opportunity when you hear people celebrating their gains in a particular stock. Another opportunity will arise.
5. Stay away from derivatives for now. Stuff like options, short selling, futures etc are highly speculative and are akin to gambling.
6. Do not be tempted to place all of your savings into a single stock or into the stock market. Always have an emergency fund that you can access from your atm machine. On a day that you don't expect, your car will break down, you will fall sick and your grandma in the village will swallow razor blade. Withdrawal from the stock market will erase all your gains for that year.

I just felt I should say that the market could experience a downturn soon. The crashing dollar, upcoming elections and possibility of finding a vaccine soon could throw things off balance and spark a massive selloff from tech stocks. The current market appears to be outperforming last year. This is very unusual in the middle of a pandemic and analysts have suggested that this is a signal that there is a bubble that is about to burst.

I see myself moving away from single stocks and biotech arenas into the more generalised field of ETFs. Highly geared, high equity beta and negative EPS stocks are likely to be worst hit from my experience. I am not being alarmist, just felt like saying this and to make us all prepared for what is to come.

Nikola dropping as a result of the earnings report

Is it advisable to still hold on to it or keep it for long term

I would dump it. No revenue, no data, not even a single car on the road yet. I would dump it and go for any industrial revolution ETF if you're genuinely into renewable energy and electric cars.

Please sell your SPCE now. Virgin Atlantic just filed for bankruptcy. I wish SpaceX has gone public, that or Blue origins could have been a better space exploration stock to buy because they are getting contracts from NASA and other government military agencies. The video from SPCE that came out a few days ago was not even from a real space craft as I read. Don't take my word for it, do your due diligence.

As for Jumia, I never jumped on it- not even now, because I feel it is a falling knife. You should not catch a falling knife. Even if it gets to 100, I won't regret. Please don't take my word for it without due diligence.

Don't feel hurt, that's not a good investor mindset. You came at the right time and many more opportunities will come. You should also be prepared for losses. Take your time to study financial statements and get educated on fundamental analysis. Don't take anyone's recommendation without doing your due diligence.

Great information.

I have never played ETFs...

Hope I would understand that one day...

An exchange traded fund will buy shares in a particular sector. They can buy shares of the top 50 most capitalized stocks in the tech sector. This is for people who don't have money to buy everything and who want to spread the risk of investing in just one company. There are ETFs that buy shares in biotech pharmaceutical companies too. Numerous categories, but if you enjoy taking risks, you may not like it. Although if I may add, there is research that people who invest in these funds usually outperform single stock buyers like us. The only problem is that this performance is usually tracked long term.

I will be looking out this week for the Bull's eye in $ZVO, $PFE, $ONTX, $KTOV, $FRSX, $SPCE, $BNGO and Microsoft ($MSFT) due to its ongoing talks to buy the popular App, TikTok.

Nokia ($NOK) is an interesting 5G play with relatively cheap price ($4.78). $NOK's very good 2Q2020 earnings report beat estimates and it's price chart has technically formed a 'golden cross' with sustained large volumes over the last few days of trading, indicating a breakout and likely upcoming bull run. Mid to long term here.
As Always, DD is required before investing in any stock.

Bonne chance!!!

Facebook also planned to launch Reel, a tik tok competitor this month. Just to notify everyone thinking of selling their Facebook stock for Microsoft. If you're patient enough you can wait or load up on ETFs that are FAAMG heavy if you prefer to play safe.

Some banks bill lower than 400/$. FBN billed me 400.02/$.

No bank will bill you at parallel market rates of 475.

Cc lastclaire4 after looking at it I concluded that you really can't win with these apps. Once you think that you have found the right app for you, that is when you will notice one coma. The only way it seems that you can win is if you let the money stay in your account for long enough that the naira depreciates further against the dollar, so that you can reap the benefits.
InvestBamboo will let you deposit at 479 but you can withdraw at 469. I haven't had any need to withdraw for a while so, I don't think it may affect me for now.
The pros in investing have taught that the first step before investing is to set aside an emergency fund. Because most people will want to invest their last kobo but instead end up eating the gain due to premature withdrawal of the investment for emergencies.

This just in:
Sanofi (SAN) and GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) just received $2.1 billion to supply vaccines. They are both profitable, dividend paying companies based in Europe.
From my experience, these meet the profile of companies that do NOT react crazily to press reports. I will buy but I am not expecting to make Kodak proportion of returns. Also, short term positions only because their stocks have not grown in the last 5 years.

I did something silly. I did a transfer from my ecobank mobile app to InvestBamboo. I used the former account number. I forgot a new one is generated for every transaction. I just got a failed transaction notification from my bank and no reversal of transaction. They have not picked the phone and the app chat bot wasn't helpful.

Bamboo is completely different because you’re paying from your naira account direct to their own naira account.

Only thing is that Bamboo charges at higher rate and gives you back at lower rate.

Example; today is N479 per dollar.
So if you buy $1000, that’s N479k.
If you want to withdraw that same $1000, you will get N469k. It’s only an advantage if you buy to trade, and when you want to sell, exchange rate is now higher than what you paid at. Like I bought $1k @ N424 then. Now it’s N469 withdrawal rate. It’s now my advantage because I’m getting more money on top my trade profit.

Note; Bamboo charges 1.5% buying and selling rate.
So if you still compare with T212 in terms of your actual profit, it’s the same thing.

T212 doesn’t charge you a dime & exchange rate is from your bank not them.

Example: If you use ZenithBank, Gtbank, Ecobank to fund your account (today), the rate is between N390-N400 which is good as compared to Bamboo rate. But when you withdraw your profit to your account, you might get at N370 or N360. It’s not T212 fault, so I’m still sticking with them.

Basically the difference between Bamboo & T212 within the Nigerian geographical location is not much.

Thank you very very very much. The differences aren't that much truly.

It depends on your bank.
You have to keep bugging them in some cases.
Ask T212 to send you transaction receipt, so you can give your bank to track it.

It takes 3-4 working days but can be longer depending on your bank.

I’ve used ZenithBank (2 working days).
FidelityBank (3 working days).
I sent them transaction receipt and they credited me almost immediately.

Note : you would be credited at a lower exchange rate than what you paid. CBN also takes some charges for International Transactions apparently.

Eg; FidelityBank charged me at almost N530 for Euro.
I was paid back with N491. You see the massive difference?

Being a Nigerian in Nigeria is like having a death warrant. The country will frustrate the living daylight out of you! If you’re using a U.K. account, the same amount you withdrew is exactly what you will be credited. No deductions, nothing!

Anyway just keep calling your bank.
If you’re banking with FCMB or WEMA or all this smaller banks, it could take 10 days or more (according to some folks in one of my telegram groups).

All the best smiley

@ fidelity bank charge. So unfair and will eat into your capital gains. Does Bamboo do the same thing?

I'd love to know what you mean by inspiring activities. But I'm with nna777. The honest story about day trading and handling single stocks is that it is almost like gambling. The seasoned long term investors on this thread are mostly quiet. Every day trader is a genius in a bull market and today was bearish. The above "Stock Focus" was done May 6th when it was trading at $14.10.
Now $59.10 today!

As in! When everything went red on Friday Overstock managed to lose just little before it eventually turned green. I don't understand why. It's beta is very high. Highly geared and negative PE ratio. What is happening oo.

Nice one. I often read Jim Cramer's posts but haven't read any of Dave Ramsey's posts. Actually, my stock investments are split into short-term, mid-term, long-term and very long-term.

For very long term, i try to buy company's that are recovering from crises, undergoing recapitalization, lower or close to its 52weeks low, and was hitherto very profitable and paying annual dividend. Currently tracking Just Energy ($JE), a Canadian-based coy focused on essential needs (i.e. a water quality, natural gas, electricity retailer) operating in Canadian and American markets across North America, and in Germany, Ireland and Japan.

In the last 11years of operation (2009 - 2019), $JE consistently paid an average annual dividend of $0.50 (lowest of $0.25 in 2019 and highest of $1.24 in 2011) before the business made losses in 2019. JE recently exited the loss making countries like Ireland, Japan and Germany in order to focus on North America, where they are more profitable and also announced recapitalization plans which started this July to end in Sept 2020.

JE's current price is $0.41 with 52-weeks low of $0.34 and 52-weeks high of $3.64. It's all-time highest stock closing price was $16.32 on April 01, 2011.

Disclosure: I bought at $0.41 and ready to hold for very long time, possibly 5-10 years until my price target is met, before i offload. This is still a risky bet. As usual, DD is required before investing in any stock.

Bonne chance!!!

In regards to your enquiry, unfortunately you cannot find it & you have low chances of them actually telling you (bc of security reasons).

Kindly upload your proof of address.
If it gets bounced based on address mismatch, then you have to either update your bank address at any branch or open another T212 acc (have to close the current one first though).

I hope this helps.
Thank you. My proof of address upload was rejected and I am just assuming that this is the reason. Other reasons that I suspect:

1. It was scanned and I sent it to gallery before I uploaded. I didn't convert it into pdf.
2. I scanned only the first page
3. The name of the city was not very clear in the statement. The accounts officer said that wasn't an issue.
4. The stamp with the name of the bank was not clear.
