The Presidency said it has noted public concerns on the unfortunate attack leading to the death of daughter of the Afenifere leader, Pa Reuben Fasoranti.

Garba Shehu, presidential spokesman, in a statement, Monday night said the President had already issued a statement expressing his heartfelt condolences to the family of Mrs Funke Olakunri and followed up with a telephone call.

It added that Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo also paid a visit to the grieving family in Akure, Ondo State.

“Her death is a tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family. It is incumbent on all leaders across the country to consider their language and its potential consequences.

“Insecurity is an issue that Nigeria must face together as one nation – united. Times of tragedy like these are not the time for politics.

“It reveals only disrespect for the departed and her family. And we hope that those who stand in positions of influence recognise and understand this,” the statement added.

Former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, has said Nigerians cannot accept the physical assault of a yet-to-be identified lady by the Senator representing Adamawa North District in the National Assembly, Elisha Abbo.

A video of the incident, which reportedly occurred before the inauguration of the ninth National Assembly, had the Senator ordering his police orderly to further arrest the lady.

He had accused the lady of taking sides with the seller of intimacy gadgets who accused him of being a drunkard.

Reacting to the video, Fani-Kayode in a post on his Facebook page, condemned the action of the federal lawmaker.

He urged the young lady to sue the Senator, while also calling for his arrest and prosecution.

The former Minister said, “utterly barbaric and shameful behaviour from Senator Elisha Ishaku Abbo, the youngest member of the Senate. This is unacceptable and something needs to be done about it.

“I call for his arrest and prosecution for assault and battery. I advise the young lady that was beaten to sue him!”

Member of the House of Representatives, Hon James Abiodun Faleke, has declined offer from the people of Kogi West Senatorial district to contest the governorship ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the forth coming governorship election.

Instead, he asked the people to choose a candidate with the interest of the area at heart.

Speaking at a meeting of stakeholders from the area in Abuja on Friday, Faleke told his people that he was back to Lagos where he was trained politically and would support any candidate selected by them, but would support anyone who helped in truncating the aspiration of the Okun nation.

He said he had received several calls from his people asking him to contest the party ticket, pointing out that it is better to tell the people the truth, saying they must take their destiny in their hands and negotiate with all the aspirants in the race before selecting one to support.
He told them that as a result of the suffering of his people, he had to bend backward two years ago to reach out to Governor Yahaya Bello on the need to address the suffering of the people of the state, pointing out that the governor paid deaf ears and never showed any interest in reconciliation.

He said he told the governor that there was the need for true reconciliation if things were to work out well for him, adding that the people of Kogi West voted for Senator Dino Melaye during the last election as a way of protesting the treatment they suffered from Governor Yahaya Bello.

The Federal Government has hailed the Super Eagles for being the first team to qualify for the round of 16 at the ongoing 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Egypt.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria had on Wednesday defeated the Syli Nationale of Guinea 1-0 in Alexandria, Egypt to book a place at the knock-out stage of the competition.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, Mr Olusade Adesola, gave the commendation on Thursday in a statement by the ministry’s Director of Press, Mrs. Blessing Lere-Adams.

“In the light of the scintillating performance of the national team, the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development joins millions of football loving Nigerians to congratulate the Super Eagles.

“We commend them for the doggedness on the field of play as well as clinching the ticket to the round of 16 after defeating their Guinean counterpart,” Adesola said.
He also reiterated the support of the Federal Government to the team’s welfare, while urging them to go all the way to win the AFCON trophy for the teeming Nigerians back home.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Super Eagles will play their last group game on Sunday against debutants, Madagascar.

The Super Eagles, who currently top their group with six maximum points from two matches, were the first team in the tournament to qualify for the knock-out stage.

The 2019 AFCON, which kicked off on June 21 will end on July 19.

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has announced that the State Government will henceforth bankroll the form fees for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) of Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board(JAMB) for all Indigenes and non-indigenes in the state.

Governor Wike said that the gesture of the Rivers State Government will commence with the 2020 UTME to be conducted by JAMB.

Speaking during a Courtesy Visit by the Registrar of JAMB at the Government House Port Harcourt on Thursday, Governor Wike said that the Rivers State Government is committed to ensuring that less privileged students are not denied the opportunity to sit for the examination.

He said: "From 2020, UTME forms for Indigenes and non-indigenes will be paid for by the Rivers State Government. It is important for us to ensure that children of the less privileged don't bear this burden.

"This offer is to ensure that no qualified candidate is denied the opportunity to write the UTME. For some parents, the fee is nothing, but there are families that cannot afford the fees".

The Governor also announced the allocation of land at the Greater Port Harcourt City to JAMB for the construction of their Zonal Office.

He also allocated a block of offices to JAMB as their temporary office in Rivers State, following the dilapidation of the current office. He also donated an operational vehicle to JAMB in the State.

Registrar of JAMB, Professor Ishaq Oloyede commended the Rivers State Governor for his commitment to the development of education, especially his abolition of fees for secondary and primary schools in the state.

He appealed to the Rivers State Governor to allocate a temporary office to JAMB for their daily operations as the current office has totally degenerated.

Shehu Sani, former Kaduna Central Senator, has faulted the Federal Government’s proposed establishment of Ruga settlements for herdsmen in some states of the federation.

He said establishing the settlement without ensuring ensuring a comprehensive inter-communal peace will lead to disaster.

Buhari government had disclosed that it was working towards establishing Ruga settlements for herdsmen in 12 pilot states nationwide.

Mohammadu Umar, the Permanent Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, made this known in Abuja on Tuesday.
He said that the farm settlements, when fully established, would address incessant clashes between Fulani cattle rearers and farmers.

Reacting, Sani tweeted: “Establishing a ‘Rugan Fulani’ settlement in some states where spears and swords are flying over heads and without facilitating a comprehensive inter communal peace plan and MOU, will be a recipe for disaster.The architects of the idea are viewing the problem from their tinted windows.”

Former Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun has described as laughable, allegations he stockpiled firearms before the general elections and hurriedly handed them over to the police a day to handover.

According to the statement released by Durojaiye on Wednesday morning, no AK47 rifle was handed over to the police on May 28, the day the former Governor was disarmed as part of handing over formalities.

“It is rather interesting and ironic that a routine, bona fide and patriotic disposition of Senator Ibikunle Amosun has been so savagely twisted in a premeditated effort to stand logic on its head. It is important to clarify that NOT A SINGLE AK47 RIFLE was handed over at the event.

“Senator Ibikunle Amosun would have loved to ignore this report for the simple reason that it is a matter for the remit of the Police and Security agencies. But, that course of action will appear disrespectful to well-meaning stakeholders and inquirers on the matter. Secondly, the good people of Ogun State and Nigerians at large deserve to know the exact circumstances of the handing-over of these security items.

“It is important to stress that this was not the first time that Senator Amosun, whilst in office as Governor and former Chief Security of Ogun State would be handing over security assets to the police. The particular exercise of 28 May, 2019 was done openly in the full glare of the public and the media to ensure accountability, guarantee transparency and judicious use of the assets.

“Without going into the details and thereby breaching conventions, suffice to say categorically that the AK47 rifles were supplied directly to the Nigeria Police, Ogun State Command. The rest of the merchandise were securely kept in the approved designated armoury within the Government House precincts under police surveillance as it obtains in most Government Lodges, to guarantee exclusive use of the materials in Ogun state.

“The suggestion that the security assets were quickly handed over to the police in order that the new administration will not know about it is laughable because the current Governor of Ogun State, Prince Dapo Abiodun was the main supplier of some of the assets in question, notably, the Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs).

A 77th minute header from Kenneth Omeruo helped the Super Eagles of Nigeria to a 1-0 win over Syli Nationale of Guinea and sealed their spot in the knockout round of the ongoing AFCON 2019.


Nigeria dominated the early exchanges but fail to make their possession count with poor decision in the final third to play out an even first half as both teams head into the dressing room for the half time break tied at 0-0.

The second half was more of the same but this time around Nigeria showed more intention to score and that they did in the 77th minute when Omeruo headed home a well delivered cross from Moses Simon off a corner kick.

Omeruo got rewarded for his performance with the award of man of the match after the game, further highlighting his improvement after a solid display while on loan to Spanish side Levante from English Premier League side Chelsea.

Kwara State High Court sitting in Ilorin, the state capital Wednesday struck out the certificate forgery case filed against Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.

The court dismissed the case after the claimant insisted he was withdrawing the case.

Justice Adenike Akinpelu struck out the case after Adekunle Oluwafemi Abraham, a member of the PDP who had filed the case, told the court he had indeed presented a notice of withdrawal of the matter.

Justice Akinpelu said the withdrawal meant that the efforts of one Olusola Olaseinde who wanted to join the suit were inconsequential since the original case has been withdrawn.

AbdulRazaq had repeatedly said the case was politically motivated and meant to stop him from contesting the March 9 governorship poll, adding that the claimant was acting out a script from his political adversary.

The governor had won several court cases filed by a faction of the All Progressives Congress (APC) led by one Ishola Balogun-Fulani, an ally of the former Senate President Bukola Saraki.

Balogun-Fulani had filed a suit challenging the candidature of AbdulRazaq. But the Appeal Court and the Supreme Court dismissed the case, affirming that the Governor was rightly nominated by the APC National Working Committee led by Comrade Adams Oshiomhole.

The Edo State Police Command has urged aggrieved parties in the leadership crisis rocking the Edo State House of Assembly to seek redress in a competent court of law.

This came as the Joint Action for the Advancement of Democracy in Edo (JAADE) sought for police patrol for a peaceful march to register its disappointment over perceived skewed inauguration of the Edo State House of Assembly.

A statement signed by Assistant Commissioner of Police in Edo State, Tunde Sunmonu, said the Police Commissioner disapproved any form of prosession for now.

The statement said the Police Commissioner advised any aggrieved party to seek redress in court.

Leader of JAADE, Comrade Aiyamenkhue Edokpolo, who briefed journalists after aborting the procession called for immediate and unconditional restoration of an ideal democratic order where proper inauguration for the 24 members-elect would be done.
Edokpolo said the inauguration of only nine members was an assault on the psyche of Edo people.

He called on President Muhammadu Buhari to ensure the Edo State House of Assembly revert to the true dictates of the rule of law and nip in the bud any foreseen breakdown of law and order.

Edokpolo stated that the installation of minority rule in the Edo Assembly was uncivilized, barbaric and threat to democracy and peace.

The Presidential Election Petition Tribunal on Tuesday reserved ruling on the application seeking the withdrawal of the petition challenging the re-election of President Muhammadu Buhari filed by Hope Democratic Party (HDP).

Justice Mohammed Garba, Chairman of the five-man panel, reserved the application after it was argued by counsel to the parties.

A National Chairman of Hope Democratic Party (HDP), Tapre Poland had approached the tribunal with the application.

The tribunal also reserved its ruling on another application filed by Poland, praying for the substitution of counsel representing the party.

Mr Anthony Agbolahan, counsel for Poland, had adopted and argued the written addresses of the applicant.

The applicant prayed the tribunal to grant the two applications, adding that HDP was no longer interested in contesting the victory of the president in the Feb. 23 general election.

Tapre, a member of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party, assumed the position after the substantive National Chairman, Chief Ambrose Owuru, was suspended by the party.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Owuru, who contested the presidential election on the platform of HDP, is challenging Buhari’s victory in the election.

Mr Chukwunoyerem Njoku, Counsel for both HDP and Owuru, prayed the tribunal to discountenance the two applications, describing the applicant as an “interloper’’.

Njoku also argued that the applicant had no locus to file for the withdrawal of HDP, adding that he had no official power to do so.

Njoku said Poland was neither the National Chairman of the Party nor contested the Feb. 23 presidential election on the platform of HDP.

He further explained that only the National Working Committee (NEC), chaired by Owuru, who remained the National Chairman of HDP could decide whether or not to press on with the case.

Njoku, therefore, prayed the tribunal to disregard the application by dismissing same.

Justice Garba had earlier granted the petitioners leave to effect typographical corrections in their main petition but however declined additional prayers to file additional list of witnesses.

The 2019 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar on Tuesday said the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal did not reject his request to check the purported central server of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, as “prematurely” claimed by the Presidency.

Garba Shehu, the Senior Special Assistant on Media to President Muhammadu Buhari, had in a statement on Monday commended the ruling by the tribunal, stressing that the opposition’s attempt to overreach the judicial process was overwhelmingly rejected by a unanimous decision.

Recall that the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal had in a unanimous decision ruled that the request could not be granted since the issue of whether such central server existed or not, is already a subject of controversy in the substantive petition that is challenging President Muhammadu Buhari’s re-election.

Atiku, in a statement on Tuesday by his Special Adviser on Media, Paul Ibe, argued that his case to check INEC server was not dismissed as claimed by the presidency, adding that the “main case has not begun and that the matter of granting access to inspect the INEC server is not relevant to the preliminary stages”.

The statement read, “What the honorable Tribunal said is that it is still at preliminary stages and the main case has not begun and that the matter of granting access to inspect the INEC server is not relevant to the preliminary stages. It is a matter to be adjudicated upon when the case proper is being heard.
“Their giddiness has even blinded them to the eye witness testimony given to multiple media in interviews by staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission that there is indeed a server and that they actually submitted results and accreditation through it.

“In their rush to claim a Pyrrhic victory, the Buhari administration missed out the fact that the 2019 budget has multiple line items for procurement, maintenance and service of the server they claimed does not exist.

“Furthermore, the statement tried to spin the recent verdict on the election passed by the EU election observers. For the avoidance of doubt, what the EU report said is that the 2019 elections had significant defects and fell short of expectations. It should be noted that one of the issues they raised is the attempt to muzzle not just the media, but more importantly, the judiciary.

Troops of operation HARBIN KUNAMA III, on routine patrol to Danboa village, on Monday, intercepted some notorious bandits’ informants and logistics suppliers at Sabon Birni Local Government Area of Sokoto State.

The interception was in continuation of the ongoing offensive operations against armed banditry and other criminal activities within Sokoto State and its environs.

Colonel Sagir Musa, Acting Director Army Public Relations in a statement, disclosed that the troops, acting on credible intelligence report, raided the location and apprehended the criminals who were transacting at Burkusuna market.

“Similarly, troops in response to complaints of bandits activities at Magira village, stormed and raided the location and engaged the bandits in a fierce battle.

“Consequently, the troops pursued the bandits to their hideouts killing scores, while several others escaped with gunshot injuries.

“Unfortunately, one soldier paid the supreme price during the encounter”, Colonel Musa disclosed.

According to the Army Spokesman, the General Officer Commanding 8 Division, Major General Hakeem Oladapo Otiki on behalf of the Chief of Army Staff,
Lieutenant General Tukur Yusuf Buratai commended the troops for the exploits and thanked the locals for providing timely information that led to the successful encounter.

He said that the GOC enjoined members of the public to continue to support the ongoing operation by providing timely and accurate information to enable the troops sustain the tempo against armed banditry and other criminal activities in Nigeria.

According to him, notable among the arrested criminals are:

“Mallam Ibrahim — Confirmed to be a notorious bandits informant and collaborator renowned for collecting ransom on behalf of the bandits.

“Mallam Ashiru Goni — Confirmed to be another notorious bandits courier agent who specializes in transporting logistics for bandits within and outside Sokoto State.

“Mamman Taratse — A confirmed logistician for the criminals, – he specializes in the sale of rustled cattle at various markets within and outside Sokoto State.”

Presidential spokesman, Femi Adesina, has said President Muhammadu Buhari will announce his cabinet very soon.

Buhari is yet to name new Ministers, 26 days after he was sworn in for his second term in office.

The president has since made just three appointments: Mele Kyari as the group managing director (GMD) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and renewal of Ahmed Idris’s appointment as the Accountant-General of the Federation (AGF) and renewing the appointment of Godwin Emefiele, governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

In his first term, it took Buhari six months to announce his cabinet.

But speaking in a chat with The Interview, Adesina said “the circumstances are not the same”, adding that it would not take as long as it did in 2015.

“Nigerians will not have to wait a day longer than necessary, before they have a cabinet,” Adesina said.

“And as the president himself has said, the process won’t take as long as it did in 2015, because the circumstances are not the same.”
