We hope so too, but the basis of unity of any Nation should not be based on disrespect of its minority. By hook or crook there has been a imbalance of power towards the minority people o Middle belt and South South.

I think Rotational presidency is a good policy but if it must be sustained we must be ready to review and expand it to capture the political mood as well as realities on ground at any point in time. The basis of rotation was based on patience and a south willing to fogive.

I think we the minority have been also patient for 50years, I believe rotational Presidency can be reviewed to capture the realities of now. Obasanjo honoured the agreement and handed over to the North. But destiny has given minorities an opportunity.

I do not think it is fair to ask those who have been patient for 50years to refuse to sieze this opportunity and wait for a future turn that may never come. The NORTH CAN WAIT.

Otherwise let us write rotational presidency into the constitution so that we can be rest assured that in 2015 power will come down to South

Thisday reported that he was seen at Abuja International airport on his way to Europe last night.

Meanwhile, the former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Chief Mike Aondoakaa, was also seen at the Abuja airport last night on his way out of the country.

He was said to be heading to somewhere in Europe “to rest” a day after he lost his high-profile job in a minor cabinet reshuffle.

Yaradua is gone for good. Lets focus on our acting president.

The two bits in bold can not co-exist in a sane country. If Yar'adua is gone for good why is Jonathan still acting President?

People need to stop getting scared of heating up the polity. We have pampered this country for too long and only succeeded in sustaining litany of illegalities. Let us stand up for what is right for once. If the system gets heated up it will still cool down when the right thing has been done.

We need either section 144 or 143 in other to swear in Jonathan as full commander-in-chief of the armed forces.

He still lives in Agoda House instead of the full Presidential House. If Yar'adua is gone for good why is this the case. If he is very much around why can't we know the true state of his health?

Politics / Re: Reps Team Denied Access To Yar’adua by OYBMEND: 1:40am On Feb 12, 2010
honestly I think people should begin to protest in front of the Saudi Arabian embassy to either release our President if he is alive or tell us if he is dead. They have no right to keep our President Hostage.

No section of the constitution provides for an Acting President for a dead man. If he is alive let us know, if he is dead or incapacitated let us do the right thing and give him a befiting burial.

Femi Falana and co, our next protest should be to Saudi Arabian embassy with a petition to UK and US embassies to warn the saudis to release our President.

we just need to ignore that their list. Then go remove am when they tire. If then want us to find new friends in Russia and China then we should show them we are willing to do that.

Presidency: crises not over-Good Governance Group
Written by Salihu M. Lukman
Thursday, 11 February 2010 10:49

By conferring on the Vice President Goodluck Jonathan the status of Acting President the National Assembly seems to have bowed to public pressure. Transferring presidential power to Goodluck Jonathan is the right thing to do. But the manner in which the National Assembly invoked Section 145 has not completely resolved the constitutional crisis. The federal legislators merely created a constitutional fiction to redress constitutional violation by President Yar’adua and members of his Kitchen Cabinet. While the legal and Constitutional basis of the decision to empower the Vice President are inherently flawed, the fact remains that Nigeria has taken a step back from the abyss by the legislators’ decision and the consequent assumption of Acting President by Mr. Jonathan. But the fear remains that this fiction may fail unless reinforced with reality of Section 144 of the Constitution.

As a group dedicated to the institutionalization of good governance at all levels, 3G believes that the only way to truly resolve the crisis surrounding the Presidency is for the Executive Council of the Federation (EXCOF) under Acting President Jonathan to as a matter of urgency and national importance, determine the exact whereabouts of President Umaru Musa Yar’adua as well as his exact state of health.

3G believes that the absence of President Yar’adua from the country for nearly three months without passing through the established procedure as provided in the laws of Nigeria is a clear breach of the Constitution that should not by simply brushed aside. It is a critical breach of security for a President of a country to be supposedly holed up in a hospital in Saudi Arabia without top government officials, including the Vice President and security chiefs, knowing his whereabouts. It is also disheartening that a resolution of the Senate to President Yar’adua to send to it a letter of vacation received no response and the Senate did not bother to inquire whether the resolution was delivered to the sick President.

If the President Yar’adua is incapacitated and therefore unable to send a written memo as required by the Constitution, then it raises serious questions about criminality and duplicity that demand answers. For instance, who signed the supplementary budget? Who has been authorizing presidential decisions in the name of President Yar’adua for 78 days? Have the security Chiefs made efforts to ascertain the state of President Yar’adua? And who took the decision to not only keep the nation in the dark, but also embarked on a campaign of falsehood to misinform the public? These questions require urgent answers if our democracy is to survive and grow.

For the avoidance of doubt, the Good Governance Group hereby calls on the National Assembly pursuant to its oversight power under Section 88 of the Constitution and the Executive Council of the Federal under Acting President Goodluck Jonathan to urgently:
(1) Establish the exact whereabouts of President Umaru Musa Yar’adua and determine the exact status of his health;

(2) Identify the different persons behind the decision to transfer the President abroad and the various roles they may have played in misinforming the public;

(3) In the event that President Yar’adua is considered medically unfit or incapable of carrying out the functions of President, to declare him so and swear in Acting President Jonathan sworn in as President and Commander-in-Chief.

In the meantime, the Good Governance Group calls on the Acting President to recognize this moment as a transformative moment and redeem the promises of electoral reform and war against corruption which President Yar’adua thoroughly compromised. The Good Governance Group offers the Acting President a hand of fellowship at this defining moment to move fast and unwaveringly towards comprehensive and genuine electoral reform that will ensure that Nigerians have a real opportunity to effect genuine and democratic change of leadership at all levels of government in 2011. The Good Governance Group will continue to mobilise Nigerians to demand democratic accountability and constitutional governance at all times.
The struggle continues.

Okay, some people here are saying Ogbia, some are saying Ogba. Which is it? and which one is Jonathan from?

Ogba is in Egbema in River State while Ogbia is in Bayelsa. But like Abagworo said. Ogbia has a mixture of Ijaw and Ekpeye. Ekpeye is a version of igbo just like Etche, Ikwere etc.

But these things are not necessary. Most importantly he is a Nigerian and grew up in Oloibiri where Nigeria's first oil well was discovered. The man has as much stake in Nigerian project as anyone else and deserves some respect.

It will be condesending for anybody to lecture Jonathan on how to handover to the North in 2011. The South South has neither produced a President nor acting President in this country's 50year history as a republic. I think it is not too early for Nigerians to get ready for a Goodluck Presidency in the next 5 years. The North has ruled this country for over 30 of its 50year history. WHY CAN'T THEY WAIT??

If the 'Ibo' is not a synonym for a fraudulent & greedy man why are you guys hurriedly claiming the Ogbia people for yourselves now? simply because Jonathan is now Acting President.

From my knowledge of the Ijaws, they tend to give their kids any names that catch their fancy regardless of tribal/language differences. Ask Jonathan the meaning of 'Ebele' you'll be surpised he doesn't even know grin

Very insensitive a ridiculous response. How do you know where I am from? I speak igbo but I am not from the South East ok?

Jonathan is a full blown Ijaw man. He has Ijaw written all over him. His complexion betrays this fact.
Politics / Re: Goodluck Ebele Jonathan by OYBMEND: 12:35am On Feb 11, 2010
In present day Nigeria geopolitics you can not describe Jonathan as Igbo

But the Riverrine people of Rivers, Bayelsa, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Delta State have a lot in common with the Igbos

Come to the Rural areas of Kalagbari and Okrika and you will see that half of the mothers there are Igbos of the southeast

The Bonny people, Ikwere people, Etche people, or Ndoni people of River State all speak Igbo, dress the Igbo attire but curiously will without knowing it confuse the word 'ibo' as a synonm for Fraudulent or greedy man. However when these folks come to their senses they admit they are as much Igbo as everyone else.

The Igbos too have their own sins as far as disrespecting the riverine people goes. The riverine people call the Igbo people of the South East 'greedy' while the Igbo people of the South East call the riverine people 'lazy'. So its a too way ignorance born out of post war experiences fuelled by others to divide us in the misguided belief that somehow Nigeria benefits more when we disagree with our neighbours. But obviously this is far from the truth.

So Jonathan is not igbo in the context I suspect you guys are looking at this. But the fact that his middle name is Ebelechukwu and the fond name his parents will call him is Azikiwe demonstrates that he is simply one of the few who did not buy into the divisive prejudices promoted by outsiders to divide us.

Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, Ph.D

PROFILE OF HIS EXCELLENCY GOODLUCK EBELE JONATHAN Ph.D.

Dr.Goodluck Ebele Jonathan (see CV), is a man of great honour and outstanding integrity. He is true statesman, whose meritocracy, selfless services and exemplary leadership qualities bear eloquent testimonies to his professional and political successes

His Excellency, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, a man with great quest for knowledge holds a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) Honours, University of Port Harcourt, Master of Science (M.Sc.) and Doctor of Philosophy

(Ph.D.) from University of Port Harcourt respectively. He is seasoned administrator, an academic, a democrat, and an accomplished technocrat and indeed the Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State.

Dr.Jonathan holds an Honorary Fellowship of the Nigeria Environmental Society (NES), Fellow of the Public Administrators of Nigeria (PAN),

Fellow of the International Association of Impact Assessment (IAIA), Bona Fide Member Fisheries Society of Nigeria (FISON). awarded "Best Performing Deputy Governor", and conferred "Exemplary Leadership Quality and Good Governance Award". And recently, he was given an

Honorary Award for Democracy and Good Governance. A native of Otuoke in Ogbia Local Government Area of Bayelsa State – Nigeria, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan was born November 20th, 1957, to the family of Mr. and Mrs. Ebele Jonathan. He was amply endowed with intelligence, strength and tact right from childhood, even though his parents were of a humble social background. Young Goodluck started his primary education at St. Stephen Primary School (now State School – Otuoke) and later proceeded to St Michael Primary School – Oloibiri where he passed his First School Leaving Certificate honourably. In 1971, the young lad furthered his studies at Mater Dei High School – Imiringi and by 1975, he sat for the West African School Certificate and passed with flying colours.

Goodluck Jonathan was identified to be a great child right from his tender age because of his attributes and rare disposition. No wonder, his paternal grand mother "nicknamed" him "Azikiwe" as a striking simile to the great Zik to connote another great Nigerian to come in the nearest future. Goodluck was appointed Class Prefect in class three in 1973, he was further appointed Secretary to the School Food Committee, because of his brilliant disposition. And in his class four and five, he was again appointed Masterson House Prefect while his fellow prefects unanimously elected him as Chairman of the Committee of Prefects.

With his sparkling performance and enduring milieu, young Goodluck soon secured a job as a Preventive Officer in the Department of Customs and Excise from 1975 to 1977.

However, because of his dogged quest for academic knowledge, Goodluck Jonathan promptly enrolled as a pioneer student in the department of Zoology at the newly established University of Port Harcourt, in 1977. He pursued his studies with impregnable zeal and by 1981 he graduated with a B.Sc. (Hons.) Second Class (Upper Division). As a Corper, he served Nigeria devotedly between 1981 and 1982 as a classroom teacher in Community Secondary School Iresi – Oyo State (now Osun State). After the mandatory service, Goodluck Jonathan was invited for a teaching appointment by the old Rivers State Civil Service Commission in 1982, he was however, appointed a Science Inspector of Education in the Ministry of Education because of his brilliant and intimidating performance at the interview.

Dr. Goodluck Jonathan always knew that he had a bond with the academia that he cannot dispute. Hence, he soon left the mainstream Civil Service for the College of Education where he took up an appointment as an academic in the Department of Biology in November 1983. Again, because of his disciplined nature and dedication to duty, he was elected as the Representative of Congress in the Senior Staff Appointments and Promotions Committee. A position he held till he voluntarily left the College in 1993. To equip himself firmly ahead of the foresighted challenges, he enrolled again for a post graduate programme in the University of Port Harcourt.

He bagged a well-deserved Master of Science (M.Sc.) Degree in Hydro-Biology and Fisheries Biology and Doctor of Philosophy in Zoology in 1985 and 1995 respectively.

More so, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan later picked an appointment as an Assistant Director in the defunct Oil Mineral Producing Areas Development Commission (OMPADEC), in March 1993. He was deployed to the Directorate of Environmental Protection and Pollution Control where he was directing the affairs of the Environmental Protection Sub-Department.

Dr. Jonathan is a member of various professional bodies, including the Fisheries Society of Nigeria (FISON), he is a Fellow of the International Association of Impact Assessment (IAIA), a Fellow of the Public Administrators of Nigeria (PAN), and he was also awarded the prestigious Honorary Fellowship of the Nigerian Environmental Society, following his stride’s contributions towards Environmental Management.

Also, his dedication to service, eventful life devoted entirely to humanity and monumental achievements as an accomplished leader earned him the "Best Performing Deputy Governor Award in the Federation in 2002, by the Institute of Public Administration of Nigeria (IPAN). Similarly, the National Association of Women in Education Development further honoured him with the Award of "Exemplary Leadership Quality and Good Governance" in July 2003. In further recognition of his dedication to service, the NUJ Abuja Council conferred on him a prestigious Honorary Award for Democracy and Good Governance.

A humane administrator, amazingly simple minded and loved by his people, friends and colleagues, nobody ever expected he will venture into the dicey and precarious nature of Nigerian politics. Nevertheless, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan saw the need to boost the socio-economic with political interest of the common man as well as bridge the lacuna of ruralurban dichotomy of his people through the provisions of social infrastructure. Hence, he took to politics in the Fourth Republic and pitched tent with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He was picked as the running mate to the Party’s flag bearer Chief D.S.P. Alamieyeseigha. The duo emerged victorious at the polls in the 1999 gubernatorial election, and so, Dr. Goodluck E. Jonathan became the first Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State. After a successful tenure, Dr. Jonathan repeated the feat where he led Chief D.S.P. Alamieyeseigha Campaign machinery popularly called ALAMCO. By the grace of God and the desire for Bayelsans to have a good government, the duo won the gubernatorial elections again, in 2003. And Goodluck Jonathan is thus, serving as a Deputy Governor for a second tenure.

All in all, one significant feat that has endeared Goodluck Jonathan to the Ogbia people is the peace he has brought to politics. At the inception of this Fourth Republic, the political activities were characterized with extreme violence and chaos. But he doggedly advocated for politics without rancor or violence and in his usual peaceful disposition without bitterness, Ogbia political silhouette is not only stable and homogenous but one of the most violent free clan in Nigeria today.

Dr. Goodluck Jonathan is happily married to Mrs. Patience Faka Jonathan. The nuptial union is blessed with two children.

Dr. Jonathan is a man well recognized for his cluster of achievements  and immense contributions to the polity, communal liberalism, growth, and general welfare of the people. Beyond these, he is a humble man, dearly loved and respected. He has remained in the consciousness of his friends and contemporaries, as a builder of human social bridges. He is a teacher, technocrat, a democrat, a man of transparent honesty and humility; a perfect gentleman, a tender loving husband and an unshakable believer in the unity, not only of Ogbia clan but also of Nigeria.

You know when people talk about how the system has been cleaned up as opposed to the dodgy accounting we have in the past I ask whether Sanusi has so far gone into the Banks to count how much money they have in vault?. And how much they don't have?

The auditing process was still based on balance sheets provided by these banks. If any smart bank has issues they will simply get another smart accountant to balance up their books before CBN comes and CBN auditors will find nothing except for some little new losses here and there which the banks will admit to save face.

So whats the point of all the noise. The erosion of confidence which Sanusi has created will take us another 5 - 10 years to restore so whats the point?

Politics / Saharareporters Again! Soludo’s thugs attack election observers in Awka by OYBMEND: 3:00am On Feb 06, 2010
Thugs hired by Charles Chukwuma Soludo, governorship candidate of the PDP, today attacked election observers accredited by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The attack took place  early evening at Barn Hotel, Awka where the election observers as well as Mr. Soludo are lodged.
Soludo’s thugs unleashed physical assault on the monitors when the leader of the election observers, retired Colonel Bello Fadile, became suspicious after he noticed some people filling out accreditation forms in the hotel bar. The forms are only meant for INEC-accredited poll observers, but Mr. Fadile saw that the group had 300 forms that were being filled out. Fadile accosted them and asked who gave them the forms. They asked who he was and he explained that he was the leader of INEC’s election observer team. Realizing that they were in trouble, the group told Fadile that they got the forms from Soludo’s campaign team. They also disclosed that Soludo and his deputy were lodged in the hotel.

Fadile and another observer, Femi Aduwo, immediately called in the police to arrest the group. Unknown to Fadile, Soludo’s team had also called for reinforcement.

The moment the police arrested the group with the forms, Soludo’s thugs surrounded the election observer team as well as the police and unleashed a savage attack on them. Fadile's clothes were torn while Aduwo received a machete cut on his head before the police rescued them.

At the height of the assault, some members of the election observer team called Soludo’s room to appeal to him to intervene, but the former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria refused to show up. Instead he sent his deputy who appeared and asked the observers to run for dear life, stating that the Soludo campaign “has no control over our boys.”

The police managed to spirit the observers to the state CID office in Awka where they are still sequestered at the time of writing this report.

Wale Fapohunda, one of the members of the observer team, told Saharareporters that their group made disturbing discoveries from Soludo’s thugs. He told our reporter that the State CID seized and is possession of the “accounting records” of the Soludo thugs, which includes how Soludo plans to pay off DPOs in Awka in order to enlist law enforcement officers in rigging tomorrow’s governorship election.

Late last night, two highly reliable sources told Saharareporters that Mr. Soludo, who amassed a huge fortune during his tenure as CBN governor, had paid $5,000 as bribe to each INEC administrative secretary. The sources revealed that the bribes were paid through INEC commissioner Victor Chukwuani who met with the administrative secretaries yesterday.

INEC chair Maurice Iwu was not seen at the meeting, but our sources said he gave his blessing to the distribution of Soludo’s largess. Mr. Iwu has been avoiding being served with copies of a court ruling that INEC, as presently constituted, lacks the constitutionally mandated quorum to organize elections.

INEC currently has only four commissioners instead of 13. Five commissioners are required to form a quorum, but Mr. Iwu, whose tenure should have expired last year, refused to allow Ishmael Igbani from Rivers State to rejoin the commission’s board even though Mr. Igbani was reappointed, presented to the Council of State, and cleared.

A source at INEC told us that Iwu (with Attorney General Michael Aondoakaa’s support) blocked Igbani’s name being sent to the Senate for approval. “Professor Iwu does not trust Igbani to go along with his games,” said the source, adding that Iwu “feels more comfortable wheeling and dealing with Chukwuani and Philip Umeadi Jr. who are his lackeys.”

Saharareporters also learned yesterday that Chris Uba, younger brother of the Labour Party governorship candidate Andy Uba, was coordinating the last minute doling out of bribes on behalf of his brother at his house,  number 7 TY Danjuma Street in Asokoro Abuja. Our source said Mr. Andy Uba, an aide to former President Olusegun Obasanjo, had voted N1.3 billion to buy as many voters cards as possible and also to bribe polling officers.

Our correspondent in Anambra reports massive police presence throughout the state ahead of tomorrow’s ele
