As FATE WOULD HAVE IT (7) Temi woke up the following day shivering and with a throbbing head. Every time she moved her head, the pain only got worse, so she just laid still. She caught a whiff of burnt food from somewhere down her apartment, and it dawned on her that she hadn’t been eating much. Temi found the food in the hotel very terrible, so she opted for junk food instead. She lay still for a few more minutes, waiting for some sun to brighten her room. She reminisced about yesterday’s event, the people she met, the guest house and most significantly, the walk with her boss. It was the first time they would talk at length. Temi, who had a great sense of humour, found him hilarious. She realised how highly-accomplished and clever he was and yet was humble, never once flaunting his knowledge in the way she had grown to dislike other men. He also appeared to be more pleasant than she remembered from the first time she started working with him. She pushed back the blanket, got out of bed and searched for her slippers before padding across the tiled floor to her desk. Temi took her bag and hurried back to the warmth of the bed. She plumped her pillow against the wall and rested on it. Tucking her hand into their bag to bring out her phone, she felt a wave of nausea hit her. She was homesick. She thought about what her mother could be doing at that moment, probably gossiping with her fellow traders. And her siblings, going about their daily activities. She had lost her dad to a car accident while she was young. Temi readjusted her pillow and took the biscuit from her bag. She dialled her mother number and immediately changed her mind. She would message her instead. Dropping her phone and glancing at the clock, which showed 10.30 a.m. Her tummy growled loudly. She had to eat, but the hotel food was always overcooked and flavourless. “Rubbish, Rubbish”, she muttered, looking down at the empty biscuit tin. She was still murmuring when she felt the vibration on the bed and jumped. It was her phone. The screen showed “Muhammad”. “Hello Temi” His rich baritone floated over the phone. One could quickly tell he just woke up too. “Good morning, sir,” Temi said and hurriedly got out of bed. “Yeah, morning”,, Muhammad replied. “Do you mind going out today?” He asked. “I mean, would you love to visit some notable place before leaving the country?” “Yes, sir, sounds great.” “Ok then, see you by 2 p.m.” “Yes, sir,” she said, smiling, then she checked the wall clock. Always be mine ( ![]() I was beyond terrified the voice almost made me jump out of my skin. “Are you deaf, or you are just dumb?” He bickered. Lost in thought, I forgot he was talking to me. I was so busy checking him out. Oh my! He’s such a hottie. I blushed. I sighed dreamily. He was everything I wanted in a man: tall, muscled body, chiselled face, full lips. I fought the urge to cup his face. He was just perfect, His eyes roamed over me, and he quirked his brows in disdain. “I can’t believe this!” He scoffed. “Are you okay or something wrong with my face?” He asked irritated. “I said, who are you?” He roared. My God, that voice. I sighed again. It was so soothing, like how velvet melted on the tongue. I came to an abrupt pause. What was I thinking? Jolting back to my senses, I clumsily straightened my skirt. “ He…hello. I…am sorry. I didn’t mean to ba…barge in li…like that.” He palmed his face and shook his head. I was a total mess, but I went on anyway. “I knocked b…b…but no one responded“. Everything sounded so foolish even to myself. “That still doesn’t give you the right to walk in here. What if something goes missing?” He stared wide-eyed. “Uhm, wait… Are you a thief?” His eyes were blazing hot. If they could, I’m sure he would have shot lasers right out of them and burnt me to ashes. “I beg your pardon. I’m not a th…theif.” “Exactly what a thief would say.” My ears burned. “I just said I wasn’t a thief. if I weren’t invited to come here, I would have never had to enter into an unknown house talk less of encounter you.“ My anger was rising, and I couldn’t help it. He blinked furiously and smirked. “Don’t you dare talk back at me, Ever! Do you know who I am? No one, I mean nobody, looks at me and talks back to my face. I can ruin you in seconds; you would be surprised at how unfortunate you could be getting in my way like that.” I was coming close to me at a slow pace. I knew I was in for it this time around. Maybe I should have been more patient; this may probably be the snooty person I may work for. God knows I wasn’t going to back down anyways. I won’t have anyone treat me like dirt, not even someone this breathtaking. I laughed and bent over, trying to catch my breath. “Uhm, and may I ask, who are you? I haven’t done anything wrong. All I did was check if anyone was home? It’s not like I stole anything, or you saw me picking something up. I don’t even know you from anywhere. You may as well be an intruder. Who knows?” I spat back. He was livid, and the next thing I saw was his hand going up in the air. My eyes went into slits, and I silently dared him to touch me. “Quit harassing the young lady Adam. When would you ever stop being bossy? The matriarch of the Savage family stood a few steps away, smiling. I could tell she was in her mid-sixties even though she looked far younger. Her hair was grey and packed into a tight bun. Her glasses sat on her nose, and her eyes crinkled every time she blinked. She walked towards me and smiled wider. “I’m so sorry, my dear. Please pardon him; he’s having a bad day” It better be. I thought. “Erm, you must be Ella from Dr Benson”? “Yes, I am. I got here not quite long.“ “Come with me, my dear; let’s discuss.” “Alright.” Forgetting, Adam was still standing there throwing daggers at me with his eyes. I hurried to follow her. I turned and stuck my tongue out. He hissed loudly and almost breathed fire. I smiled and patted myself inwardly. Read more here: https://bookishyinka.com/always-be-mine-7/ |
TAMING HIS DESIRES (7) ENITAN’S POV “You don’t cross my mind, you live in it” Song – Before You Go by Lewis Capaldi The Williams building was arguably the tallest building in Asokoro. From a mile, anyone could see the top tower of the building hiding among the clouds. I pushed through the revolving doors of the lobby. Bolu had called me earlier that he had gotten Ademidun’s profile. Her fragile hands brushing her hair away was all I could think of. She reminded me of a broken porcelain doll. Those almond-shaped eyes burning through mine. I stepped into the vestibules of the Williams HQ. The receptionist at the waiting area stood with a wide smile. “Chinelo, how are you doing?” The bright red top and chiseled jacket she wore made her stand out from the dull color of the reception. Chinelo was part Ibo and Yoruba. She always wore her natural hair but today she was on a chic braid that cupped her face beautifully. Her dark eyes were warm and she wore nude lipstick. “I’m good. Tolu isn’t here yet, but you have a lunch meeting for twelve. I already paged you the schedule for today and the Agro Company’s proposal is on your desk.” With a nod, I took the hallway all the way down to the end and made for the office beside the board meeting room. The mahogany work desk backed the floor to ceiling windows which displayed beautiful view of Asokoro. There were two seating areas which included my work desk and the set of black sofa and center table that sat at the far corner of the room; by its side, a massive flat-screen hung on the wall streaming the daily news. I picked up a book from the two distinctive shelves where I kept my antiques and picture frames. Hanging my coat on the coat hanger by my seat, I loosened my sleeves and lowered myself into the revolving chair. I was going over the Agro Company’s file when the doors flung open. It was Bolu. He held the doorknob grinning. “Sorry to drop by unannounced” He barked. He wasn’t sorry, that I could tell. He kicked off his shoes and moved his feet in a frenzy motion against the rug. He made it a habit to do that every time. “Why don’t you get better shoes?” “I have better shoes” He retorted .And he dived for the sofa and folded his legs. “Enitan, believe me when I say the traffic was hectic.” I nodded. “I believe you. Do you have it?” Bolu waved the file I hadn’t noticed earlier in the air and slapped it on my desk. Then he reeled off, “Ademidun Osikoya, born on October 22, 1996. An indigene of Ogun state to be precise Ijebu-Ode. Deceased mum and a drunk dad, schooled in Lagos all her life. Tertiary institution, the University of Lagos. Was posted to Gwaripa for NYSC, Lives at no 7, Wuse street with a friend, Demilade. Height: 5 ft 8, Weight: 55Kg, Blood group: O-, Genotype: AA. Diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease,. Works at—“ My ears perked. “What did you say?” I knotted my brows and looked at him before flipping through the file on my table. I skimmed through the pages and my eyes fell on it. Her medical records. It was there, Parkinson’s disease. Ademidun had been diagnosed with it in November 2019. I scanned through the paper looking for the stage but it wasn’t mentioned. “No stage?” “I couldn’t get that. This was how much I could get.” I sighed and went over every bit of details again. “It’s crazy right?” Bolu said. My intercom rang and I hit the button. Chinelo’s voice aired out. “It’s 15 minutes to your Lunch date at the Shu garden Chinese restaurant” “Alright, page Dele to take the car to front of the building” Bolu was occupied rummaging through the small fridge by the shelf. “This fridge needs to be restocked.” He said, pulling out an orange juice, he gulped it noisily. “I have a lunch date with my mum, we’ll talk later. And don’t forget to send the memo from the last meeting to Tolu.” I put on my coat and walked out. The Shu garden traditional bamboo entrance held up hanging ornate designs from the top. I found my way towards the private lounge leaving the main area which was overcrowded and smoke-filled from the grill barbecue. The tables were traditionally crafted with padded cushions surrounding them. The thought of folding my legs in an uncomfortable position made my head turn. I tried not to stare at a group of men who puffed their cigarettes heavily as I moved towards the secluded area. My mum sat at a table opposite the window. To my relief, there were high tables and chairs here. My mum sighted me from the entrance and her eyes lit up. I bent over her, placing a kiss on her cheek. And I pulled the chair out. A waiter stalked towards us and placed a menu on our table. “Mum, how are you doing?” I asked. Her long black gown blended with her tone and her hair was neatly tucked underneath a yellow turban. The corner of her eyes crinkled and she crossed her feet beneath the table. “I’m good Enitan. I picked this spot because I knew you wouldn’t be comfortable in the other area. So, how have you been?” she intertwined her fingers on the table and gave me a smile that barely touched her eyes. I knew something was wrong, she wasn’t one to beat about the bush. Her gaze drifted to the window then settled on the glasshouse view of Asokoro. I placed my palm over hers on the table drawing her attention to me. “Mum, what is it? It has to be something important for you to be taking part of my business hour.” I said looking straight at her. “It’s your dad.” She replied. I groaned internally. This wasn’t the first time she fussed over my dad. Not second. Not third. I was beginning to lose count by the day. “What about him?” I asked. My brows furrowed. “I just found out that he had a child with her.” A tear threatened to drop and she sniffed. “and that’s not even the worse part, she would be twenty-two next month, to think he kept this from me, from us, for twenty-two years.” She swiped at her face but the tears came anyway. I sat there looking and feeling nothing compared to how she was. I handed her a handkerchief and she blew loudly in it. I racked my brain for comforting words to tell her but now came. I tried to be surprised by what I just heard but I failed. It was my dad; he had been this way for as long as I could remember. The night he left my mum for the other woman was when I knew with him anything could happen. It hurt so much to see my mum raise my brother and me and it hurt even more when she agreed to take him back after everything he did. The hurt was there in her eyes and in the way her body shook. “Does Gbotemi know about it?” I asked trying to shift the mood. “No, I decided to tell you before him. I just couldn’t keep it to myself. Besides, I don’t think he would be bothered by it.” Of course. He loved our dad so much that he was always willing to understand his actions. I was the only one who cared to call him out for his actions. I picked up the menu and scanned it. “Why don’t we eat before anything else huh?”. She nodded and mirrored my action, picking her menu. I lay in my bed as Abuja came to life. The karaoke bar across was awfully quiet tonight, someone must have called the police on them. The yellow street light seeped in through my window, piercing the darkness in my room. I could hear the droplets of water hit the bathtub. And it sent an eerie sound in the room. I picked my phone from the bedside table. Nine thirty pm. I went to the kitchen to make coffee. Opening the fridge, I found it empty. I couldn’t take coffee alone. I grabbed my car key from the plate on the table and left. Most storekeepers had begun closing their stores and the road sellers packed their umbrellas. The lights which illuminated the sidewalks were either turned off or blurred out. A few road sellers turned sat with oil lamps, swatting mosquitoes with newspapers. I turned to my left and I saw a blinking storefront. Bakeshop. I parked my car by the side of the bakery shop and let myself in. The bell rang alerting whoever that someone came in. The place was empty but the pastries were still displayed in the front counter. I walked towards the counter when a dark head popped from the back. Just as I remembered. That supple ebony skin and deep dark eyes stared at me. Ademidun, she was on a red apron and her hair was packed in the same tight bun I saw it in the last time, I wondered if her scalp bled from the packing it that way. She tucked her hands into her apron and moved behind the counter. Her lips were fuller than I imagined but they were pale and cracked from the harsh weather. “Hello, welcome to Yummies bakeshop, how can I help you?” “Do you have bagels and donuts?” I replied. “Yes we do.” “Okay, I’ll have two of each.” She bent behind the counter and packed them into two paper bags. The bakeshop was a small one and had a tight seating space. It seemed like the bakeshop commenced business just recently. I collected the paper bags from her and my thumb grazed her fingers. A delicious shudder coursed through me. Ademidun looked everywhere except my face. “That would a thousand naira.” She said softly. I swiped my credit card over the pay machine.. “Are you alone?” I asked peering into the back. “Yes, I was about to close the shop when you came in.” I nodded and my eyes fell on her trembling hands. She followed my gaze and tucked her hands beneath her apron. “Resting tremor.” “Huh?” Ademidun replied and tucked a strand of hair behind her ear—I pointed towards her hands and repeated. “Resting tremor, it happens when you are nervous.” She stared at the computer then back at me. “Uhm I forgot to thank you properly for the other day. Thank you.” She said and her cheeks dimpled.. “I doubt you’d find a ride home at this time. If you don’t mind I could take you home.” “No, don’t bother. I can manage.” “I insist.” Ademidun looked at me unsure. “I don’t bite. Plus you can put 911 on speed dial, just to make you feel better.” She weighed the options in her head and began untying her apron. I held the door open for her. She entered, crossing her feet. “So where do you stay?” Ademidun spared me a glance, her eyes were almost half shut and her forehead creased. “The new Brick red estate, Block 15B.” Then she pushed her head into the chair. The bakeshop was far from where she lived. Didn’t people consider the location of their workplaces anymore? We arrived at her estate, and I understood the name. Every house in the area was made from brick. A brick red house which was fenced by two-story buildings held the number “15B”. The windows and wall had left hanging down from the roof and the bushes which surrounded it were due for a trim. It reminded me of a home abandoned by the highway. The security lights were broken and the only light which illuminated the house came from the street light across the road. I turned to face her and she was asleep. The phone that she had held on to tightly throughout the ride now sat in her laps. Her head was tilted to the window and the strands of hair that escaped her bun shaded her face. The rise and fall in her chest only showed her exhaustion. I carried her to the doorstep. She squirmed in my arms before nuzzling her face in my chest. I expected her to weigh more than she did. Any more pressure and I could hurt her. Aside from the tiredness, her face gave away there was something else on it. I trudged up the steps leading to her front door. I tapped my feet over the foot mat and I could feel a key. Someone was in already. I knocked, shifting on my feet. Seconds later, the door flung open, revealing a dark lady. I looked over her head before bringing my eyes to her face. She had on a bright hair bonnet and stood in a bunny-shaped slipper. Her lips that were straightened earlier curved upwards. The streaks of a failed attempt to clean her makeup off gave her a weird look. This had to be the housemate Bolu mentioned earlier. Demilade trained her eyes on me before dropping it to Ademidun who drowsily mumbled some incoherent words. She moved from the doorway ushering me into the house and led me down the tight passage. She pushed the first door on the left open and I walked in, gently placing Ademidun on the mini-sized bed. Ademidun stretched over the sheets before snuggling into a pillow. I caught a smile stretch across her lips. “Thanks for bringing her home. I told her to let me know when she was done at work but she refused.” She shook her head both ways. “She can be really stubborn at times.” “It’s nothing.” I stopped at the door before turning to face her. “I’m Demilade” she said, slightly resting on the door. “Enitan Williams” . Demilade’s eyes widened and they ran down my body slowly. Her mouth hung lowly. I cleared my throat and she smiled, this time wider. “I should get going.” “Yeah, of…course” “Thanks again.” She called out. Read more here: https://bookishyinka.com/taming-his-desires-7/ |

Always be Mine (6) Wow.” That was the only word I could mutter. Nobody cared to hint to me that I was coming to work in a house that was this big. I could bet that the owner’s net worth was over a billion. Dr. Benson had dropped me at the gate of the Savage’s house and told me to meet the security guard at the entrance. I introduced myself as the new help. The security guard looked like he was shocked to see someone like me wanting to be a help. I couldn’t even point out the cause of his surprise. It wasn’t like I was in my dinner gown or anything. Probably my beauty struck him speechless. I chuckled. He let me in and directed me to the main door, I knocked, but nobody answered. Then, I let myself in. I thought seeing the house from the front gate was terrific, but its interior was astonishing. Now, I understood why no one answered the door. This house was far too massive for anyone to hear a slight knock on the door. The interior was all white and gold. The chandeliers hung beautifully from the roof. The sofas looked like you could have a lifetime sleep on them. It had sheep fur, which had a soft feel under my palm. I tried checking the rooms to know if anyone was in. They were all locked. Only one open was the kitchen. “My goodness,“ I yelped. Did I ever mention how I pictured my dream kitchen to be? I thought to myself. This was what I had always dreamt of—a high class kitchen. I had already began to imagine myself cooking and doing all sorts in this kitchen. I hummed my favorite tune I chuckled again. I never knew this kind of life. I mean house awaited me. I felt comfortable and relaxed. Just then, I heard someone cough behind me. “When you are done staring. Would you like to explain what the hell you are doing in my house and intruding my fucking privacy”. Read more here: https://bookishyinka.com/always-be-mine-6/ |
TAMING HIS DESIRES (6) Forever is a long time but I wouldn’t mind spending it by your side” Song- Nakupenda by Chike ft Ric Hassani ADEMIDUN’S POV It was mid-August and all the shops seemed to be in full swing and none needed any more employees. I strutted down the busy pavement looking out for shops that might have put up “WORKERS NEEDED” posters but there were none. Why was it so hard to get a job? I had begun to lose all hopes when I raised my head and saw a “waitress/waiter needed” sign. The sign was inconspicuously placed at the entrance. It was a local bakery shop and the building reminded me of an abandoned bookshop. I pushed through the transparent glass door and the bell jingled alerting everyone who bothered that someone entered. I approached the tall man at the front desk who was engrossed with the desktop screen at his front. His name tag read Bayo. On feeling my presence, he raised his head and flashed his teeth. “Hello! Welcome to Yummies bakeshop. Where we satisfy your every…desires…uhm cravings. Yes, cravings.” He ran his hands over his head shifting his gaze to the flyers on the desk then back to me. “So what is your order ma’am?” He added. I placed my palm over my mouth, trying to stifle the laughter that bubbled up in me. It was obvious he had memorized that line and just recited it when anyone came into the shop. I caught the name on the name tag pinned to the lapel of his shirt. Bayo. “Oh no, I’m here to apply as a waitress for the bakeshop. I saw the sign outside and I decided to apply.” Bayo clasped his palms together and looked over my shoulders to the sign outside. “Well about that, Actually, I forgot to bring that sign down. The thing is we’ve gotten a certain number of people we need and we do not want an overcrowded working space for our employees and customers.” My stomach twisted and I leaned forward over the front desk and I gave him a forced smile. The pays I got from my weekend jobs were really small and the bills kept piling. My hands began to tremble and I immediately shook them in my pocket. “Are you okay?” He shot a worried glance towards me before he resumed what he was doing earlier but I noticed his eyes kept darting between the desktop and me. I gave him an affirmative nod then his voice boomed again, this time lighter. “Today must be your lucky day, looks like we have a slot left” He beamed and pulled out a paper from under the desk. I felt a surge of happiness course through me. I couldn’t think of a time I’ve been happier. He noticed my change of mood and chuckled. “Here fill this.” I took the form from his grip and lowered myself into the closest chair by the front desk. I looked up taking in the sight of the bakeshop. The bakeshop was just a small house of everything sweet, chairs, tables, coffee makers, glazed donuts, and cakes in the display glass at the front counter. The place was near empty…for a time like this. At the corner of the room, a menu list was plastered on the wall. There must have been a fortune cookie stand at the front door which was now left standing alone. The scents of baking biscuits and cakes filled the place. I pushed to my feet and placed the form on the desk. Bayo ran his eyes over it and walked towards the back gesturing me to follow him. We walked towards a room in the back which was the storeroom. “As you must have noticed the place is quite empty for now. Most people come here during the evenings so if you feel up to it, you can start today and return in the evening if that’s fine with you?” He left the question hanging waiting for a reply. “Of course it is” He moved towards a locker in the room and dropped a key in my palm. “Your apron and everything you would need is here. If you have any questions feel free to meet me at the front desk.” “Sure, I’ll” “Hmmm…don’t tell me! I know” Demilade placed her finger over my lips. “Today was good right? I mean it wasn’t a dead-end right?” I smiled and screamed. “Yes! I got a job.” She bounced around the room and did her normal weird moves. Before pulling me into her embrace. I could see her spirits flying high. “I’m so glad. We should celebrate this. Friday night, club night, drinks on me. Yes!” I narrowed my eyes at her words. “Can’t we do something else instead?” I pouted. “You need to let loose. Don’t be such a bore.” She stuck out her tongue and picked up the TV remote. “We should binge on some Netflix movies for now, before you start working officially, like officially.” She bumped shoulders with me and turned her attention to the TV. “Demidun, have you heard from the mystery man who covered your medication bills? I still insist you shouldn’t have let him go without a name.” “No, I’ve not plus I think I doubt we’d bump into each other anytime soon” Demilade almost tipped over the couch. Then she faced me with a faint scowl tingeing at her lips. “It’s not every day you find someone like that you know, the least you could have done was give him a proper thank you.” “How would I have done that when I don’t know who he is or where he even works?” she nodded as my words floated in the room. I lifted my brow and returned my gaze to the TV. Demilade never forgot things easily. For a moment, I wished I had not mentioned anything about it. Demilade lived every day like it was her last. Not to mention, she had a long list of men she had been with but couldn’t seem the settle down with anyone. But I had to give it to her, she memorized the name of all of them. I couldn’t even remember the name I gave my favorite silverware dishes. “True, but you said you met him at the Williams party. If this isn’t fate.” She said dreamily. “Fate is just a word” I replied. Shaking her finger in my face she said slowly. “I have a feeling this time, it’s more than a word.” I rolled my eyes. AS FATE WOULD HAVE IT (6) Mr. Adimbo, it’s been a while I saw you since the conference in Sebo, right?” ” Yes, it has Mr. Jide.” “How’s your dad?” “He is fine,” Muhammad replied. “Is this your wife?” Mr. Jude asked and pointed at Temi, who was standing behind Muhammad. He smiled as he held Temi’s hand and drew her closer, “Temi, this is Mr. Jide, a business tycoon who owns multiple hotel chains.” “Ohhhhh c’mon,” Mr jide said, laughing as they all walked towards the Conference Hall. Temi could not help but marvel at the atmosphere and the people she was introduced to. It’s was like a fairy tale to her. She couldn’t believe a lady of her type was amongst magnates. She had a mixed feeling of joy and nervousness. The conference was held at Arum Place Guest House, one of the most luxurious hotels in Jo’burg. The meeting featured business owners from all over Africa. As they continued their walk, Muhammad noticed Temi was silent. “Hey, are you okay?” he asked, smiling. She sighed. “I guess I am.” she chuckled. “Just wait over there until we’re done, alright?” Muhammad said and tapped her shoulder. “Ok, sir.” After the conference, they both walked outside. The path was a rustling carpet of golden leaves, and the air hung heavy with the smell of bonfires. Temi and Muhammad were walking in the direction of the meadows and talking. They spoke at length about the meeting’s outcome and the benefits it would have on his own company. “So what do you think of here, compared to Nigeria?” Muhammad asked. “Well, I must admit South Africa is hauntingly beautiful,” she said smiling. “Your smile is contagious,” he said, staring at her. She smiled and bent her head to avoid his gaze. They walked in silence for a few moments along the narrow path. He wanted to ask about her family but didn’t want to seem rude, so they talked about people they knew instead. They hadn’t realized how far they had gone until Muhammad saw they were nearly at a pub which was a couple of miles away from the Conference Hall. “Wow! Oh my God, we have walked so far.” Muhammad jokingly said and laughed. “I guess we’re going to have to walk back again.” “Oh, alright,” Temi replied, smiling. They got back to the hall exhausted. “That’s one hell of a walk,” Muhammad said, staring at Temi. Temi nodded. “I guess we should head back to the hotel,” Temi insisted, this time fixing her gaze on him so that he found it difficult to let his eyes wander down the rest of her body as he has always done. “Why? don’t you like it out here?” “No, I just need rest.” “Ok then,” he said and drew her closer as they walked towards the car park. They arrived at the hotel and walked in silence as they approach the entrance to the hotel. “So….hmm, Good Night,” Muhammad said as they both paused at the entrance. “Good Night, sir,” Temi replied, walking to her apartment. Muhammad stood for a while as he watched Temi walked to her apartment. Read more here: https://bookishyinka.com/ |
ALWAYS BE MINE (5) Three excruciatingly slow days later I received a text from DrBenson to head down to her office and ensure I get there in fifteen minutes. I’d always thought that I could and would never run marathon in my life. However, I shocked myself when I felt my legs flying all the way from the main gate to her office. I was practically out of breath by the time I got to her office. Composing my self I knocked on the door and ushered myself in on hearing a response. “Good afternoon ma.” She looked up at me and smiled, seeing her smile made my shaking palms relax. There is means she probably has good news. I sighed inwardly. Might as well wait for it. “So I got to know that one of my old friends is in need of an maid or help but the thing is she doesn’t need it for herself since she is hardly around. She needs you for her grandson who just got back from the states he got transferred here to get done with his finals. I guess you both are in the same department.” She said craning her neck. I stood there mute. Dr. Benson looked at me as if she was trying to see through my soul. I wasn’t really thinking at the moment all I want to know is if the pay was good. She continued, “Well the pay would be around fifty thousand and you would be staying in the house also I heard the boy is quite a handful but I hope you would endure for the meantime”. This job was great. And the pay—was A-okay. But I didn’t understand why a boy my age would need a help. Oh well. I couldn’t believe I would be having all that money to myself. I was so lost in thought that I almost zoned out of the conversation. “All you need to do is ensure to do his cooking, laundry. Just the house chores in general. I hope you are okay with that?” I was speechless for a minute, super excited I couldn’t care less if I was working for my age mate what mattered was me being able to meet up with my expenses. Moving swiftly I pulled her into a hug. “Oh my God thank you so much ma this means a whole lot to me. I so much appreciate this. Thank you so much“. “I’m glad you are“,she replied smiling. “Anyways you are to resume as soon as possible so how ready are you“. It stuck me then that I would be leaving Mo I felt quite bad but this had to be done. I needed to tell her first of course. “Ma, can I have two more days to sort myself out? I would be ready by then“. “Uhm… that won’t be a problem then, do let me know when you are ready“. I got home and called my boss Mr. Fiyin at the pastry shop, to resign. I didn’t care if it was impromptu. Besides, It wasn’t a formal organization. There was no need for any formality in quitting work. Explaining the situation to Mo was the hardest thing to do. “Mo! It’s just a house, and we’d still see on campus. It’s not like traveling or saying goodbye forever. She bent her head and feigned sobs. I rolled my eyes and patted her back. “Would you quit being dramatic already?” I had gotten to my peak already, having to beg and explain to Mo about a hundred times why and how she couldn’t accompany me to the house of people I don’t even know. “Ella…she whined, you know I can’t do without you how would I stay here all by myself? It’s so not fair. Jeez, and there’s that annoying landlord.” She folded her arms and kept mumbling. I thought this wouldn’t be this hard. But she was making it even harder. “ You can come to visit me anytime, Mo.” I cajoled “Really?” She asked, excited. “ You sure can Mo, would you help me pack my stuff now?” “Yes, yes, yes.” I couldn’t help but laugh. She sounded like a five-year-old. “Ella.” She called out meekly “Hmmn,” I hummed, thinking of what to put in my box. “Won’t you tell your parents?“ “I don’t think they need to know yet. They won’t be so happy about it“. “True, though, just make sure you tell them soon.” “Sure I would“ Hugging me from behind, she muttered into my ear, “I would miss you so much, Ella.” “Stop it already. It’s not like I won’t be attending class.” I turned to face her. “I know, but still, it’s not the same.” “Yeah, right,“ I huffed, getting bored of her drama. Just then, she came unto me, almost wringing my neck. I was so going to miss Mo, but it would only last a while, right. I couldn’t wait to begin my new job. TAMING HIS DESIRES (5) “it’s strange how a total stranger becomes who you don’t want to stay a minute without and becomes breathless without them” Song – Boys are bad by kiss daniel ENITAN’S POV Brinnnnggg! Riiiing! Riiiing! It was another day of going to work, staring at the board members hardened faces, riding the lift in silence, eating the same bland luch with Tolu running round the office in an attempt to get the office miscellaneous and my schedule fixed. But today was a bit different, the construction company we were to strike a deal with picked St. Louis hospital for their meeting of places why a hospital? I thought. I turned off the alarm on my bedside shelf and snuggled closer to my pillow. The meeting was scheduled for 10 am after all, tossing to the other side of the bed my eyes fell on the wall clock which displayed 9:30 am. Impossible! I dashed into the shower and in 15 minutes I was riding the elevator to my underground garage. The doorman tipped his hat on seeing me. I pushed through the revolving door of the building into the garage, five minutes to ten and I had to make a good impression on them. My dark hair was ruffled from the warm shower. I’d gone with a brown suede suit and a black brogue. The woody scent of my cologne surrounded me. Dele held the car door open for me. I slid into back seat with grace. He put the car on drive and in less than a minute we were on the highway. “How was your night sir?” “Fine thanks.” On hearing my clipped tone, he didn’t ask any further. I adjusted my tie and rested my head against the window pane. People brushed shoulders on the sidewalks. Store owners placed “no hawking” , “no standing” signs in front of their stores and the hawkers who stood by the road screamed at the top of their lungs to attract customers, each tried to drown out their neighbors voice. We arrived at the St. Louis hospital at exactly ten fifteen. I breezed through the hospital hall, making way for their lounge when I saw her again. She sat on the waiting chair in the pharmacy. Her hair was packed into a tight bun, she bent forward and a tendril escaped from her bun, with those long slender arms she brushed it aside. The way she sat accentuated the bend of her hips, so voluptuous; they seemed to have been artfully carved by a potter. The green body con top she wore only made the fullness of her bosom prominent. The nurse at the pharmacy signaled her to collect her medications. She walked towards the front counter putting her glistening legs on display. They were almost the color of a deep rich cocoa infused with cream and milk. The nurse handed her a receipt and the golden specks which danced in her eyes immediately disappeared. She picked up the pen on the counter and began ruling out some things on the receipt. If it was prescribed for her then she definitely needed it. Without thinking, my legs carried me to where she stood. “I’ll pay for it.” the nurse who already called out another patient tilted her head. “Sir?” I gestured towards Ademidun and replied “I said I’ll foot her bills, give her everything on the receipt.” She bopped her head and walked towards the back room. I locked my gaze with Ademidun and her golden eyes kept me rooted to the spot. Up close, she had the most beautiful eyes I had ever seen. Breaking eye contact she shifted her weight from side to side. “You didn’t have to” she said looking back at her feet. “I know but I wanted to.” “T-thank you.” She bit her lips and her eyes sparkled. I noticed she held onto her purse tightly, shaking a little. My phone buzzed, reminding me of why I came to the hospital. I swiftly made way for the lounge. Mounting down the steps to the lounge, I sighted Bolu at the entrance. He made a silly sign to me and mouthed “you are late.” I breezed past him and walked in. “I am very sorry to have kept everyone waiting. I had an emergency to attend to, pardon me.” They waved it off with the nod of their heads and I strolled to the seat at the head of the table. “Hello, I am the head representative of the icon construction company.” He rose and stretched his hands; I shook it and commenced the meeting. AS FATE WOULD HAVE IT (5) Five months later. “I must really commend you, Miss Temi.”Muhammad said as he held the cup closer to his lips. “Your efforts have been exceptional and believe me you’ve done better than I expected.” “Thank you.” She said smiling. Muhammad had developed a strong likeness to her. He liked the way she carried herself. And how she was so at ease in her body. It was obvious she was clever and humble. “Besides, that reminds me.” Muhammad added dropping the cup “You and I will be going to a conference in South Africa”. “Wow!” She said as a mouth slacked in surprise. “Wow?”,”I guess you never travelled out of this country” he asked smiling. “No sir” she chuckled. “Uhm…is it just both of us?” “Yes, do you have any problem with that?” “N…no” “Okay, we will be leaving three days from now, I have made arrangement for your visa.” “Alright.” Temi said. Temi got home feeling excited. For years she had been looking forward to travelling away from home – to having her freedom – but now, she only thought of how much she would miss her family and how frightening it would be to travel with her boss. Alone. She went to her mother place to tell her about the forthcoming trip. Her mother was so excited. With tears in her eyes she prayed for temi. “Good morning sir.” She said, stepping into the car parked in front of the office. “Morning,” He replied briskly, then he revived the engine. “I can sense you are excited about this trip” Muhammad dragged his eyes lazily over her. “I guess,” Temi said, feeling giddy. They both discussed as they drove to the airport After boarding the plane, they arrived tired and went to the hotel he had booked for them. “Here are your keys, sir,” The receptionist said. She looked at Temi then settled her eyes on Muhammad. “Alright.” He grabbed the keys from the front desk. “Oh, sir.” She called out sweetly. We both turned out necks, and this time Muhammad’s eyebrows were creased. Temi was sure it wasn’t just her who noticed the receptionist’s failed attempt at flirting. “If you need anything, don’t hesitate to call room service.” She blinked furiously and smiled. Temi rolled her eyes and tailed Muhammad, who was already three strides ahead of her. He walked her to her room and stood at the doorway. “Good night Miss Temi, be ready by 7:pm tomorrow. We will be leaving for Johannesburg. That’s where the conference will hold.” “Alright,” She replied. Immediately she closed the door behind her she sunk into the bed, letting its warmth envelop her. ALWAYS BE MINE (4) Going to Dr. Benson’s office was always a nightmare for me. I dreaded those steps. Although, it was just a two-story building and her office was on the last floor. It still kept me on the edge. I get very lazy when it comes to doing anything besides having to climb a plight of stairs. But today I was so determined to see her I needed help. And at the moment she was the only one I could run to in times like this. I felt so relieved coming face to face with her office door. I inhaled deeply. There’s no going back now. I knocked twice. Then her voice ushered me in. Sitting behind a big mahogany desk was Dr. Patricia Benson. One reason why she interested me, was the way she always presented herself. She went about with confidence that oozed authority. She was exactly what one would refer to as a role model. “Ella quit staring and sit down. I’m only here because I invited you. I have a meeting in thirty so be quick.” “Ma I want a job!” I blurted. Realizing what I had said I couldn’t be more stupid. “I mean…I need a job.” I repeated. “Ellllaaaa,” She said. Her face was flustered and she smiled. “I have never seen you this way, is everything okay dear?” She asked. “No, not exactly,” I said looking at my feet. I twisted my palm in my laps and looked everywhere but her. “ I need a job. Any job at all. I don’t care whatever it is as long as it pays me.” She looked at me closely and sighed. “Ella why do you need a job all of a sudden? What about the pastry shop?” “Well, ma my parents are in a fix right now struggling to pay my fee. Then, there are my project expenses to worry about amongst other things. The pastry shop won’t do much in covering all my expenses. “ “What! Is it that serious?” “Yes it is, but I believe you would help me, please I’m in desperate need of your assistance. She stared at me her eyes full of pity. I hate it when I get stared at. It felt like her eyes were boring holes in my skin. So I just stood there waiting. “It’s fine I would get back to you. Probably within the next three days. That’s a promise.” She gathered some files on her desk and peered at her computer’s screen. Right there and then I felt the knot in my chest loosen. Finally, lt felt like all hope wasn’t lost. “Thank you so much. I would appreciate your reply.“ I replied not hiding my excitement. “You can go now.” She waved me off. I was relieved knowing I was heading somewhere. Just then I heard a growl that wouldn’t be from me right? I thought to myself Oops, it was my stomach. I haven’t had anything to since eat in the morning. Now, what should I eat? I thought excited. Read more here: https://bookishyinka.com/always-be-mine-4/ |
TAMING HIS DESIRES (4) “Love is like the wind, you can’t see it but you can feel it” -Nicholas Sparks Song – Someone you loved by Lewis Capaldi ADEMIDUN’S POV The small puddles of rain water, waiting to drain, rested between the uneven bricks of the pavement. The streetlights that weren’t burned out projected dim yellow lights onto the empty side walk. The storefronts bell swung in the breeze, alerting the store keeper of the nonexistent customers. Cars sat empty on both side of the road, collecting the little drizzle of the rain. I doubled my steps and walked towards my front door. I crouched in front of the “welcome” door mat and collected the key. I let myself in and the sweet scent of eucalyptus and lavender filled me accompanied with the cool breeze that blew the curtains. The only source of light in the sitting room seeped through the window. Reaching for the table lamp, I stopped to pull off my pumps. Immediately, I welcomed the feeling of the soft rug beneath my feet. The photograph of my mother faced down. I picked it up and turned it to face the condo. I ran my hands over it; this was the only memory I had of her. It was always facing the condo not down— the spicy aroma of egusi hit my senses. In the darkness, what had felt safe and cozy now felt frightening. I tiptoed towards the kitchen door which was now left slightly ajar. I caught a shadow move in the kitchen. A rush of adrenaline burst filled me, not waiting any second more, I picked up the racket close to me and barged into the kitchen and aimed for the intruder’s head. “Jeez! Demidun, if you are going to kill me. Just say so. Oh my! I can’t believe you almost took my pretty head off.” Demilade placed her hand over her chest and bent to pick the racket. “What are you doing here?” I asked her. “I live here too remember?” She pushed past me and turned on the tap. Shooting me a quizzical look, she tipped her head to a side and placed two plates on the table. “Are you going to stand there forever?” I hopped on the kitchen stool and crossed my legs. “So what happened to your party?” She rummaged the fridge and passed me a bottle of water with a granola bar.” “Oh that? I decided to hang out with you. You know how things can be. You get?” I nodded my head as I downed the water. The cold liquid ran down my throat, restoring me back to my calm composure. “Uh…huh. You don’t say.” I struggled to open the zipper of my purse when, She placed her palms over mine. She took the purse from my hands and helped me with the zipper. The corners of her lips turned upwards as she held out the purse to me. “So when is your next appointment?” “Tuesday.” She closed in on the space between us and held me tight. I could see through her. Her eyes held a mixture of worry and assurance. “Don’t worry, you’ll get through this, I know you are a fighter and fighters don’t give up.” After a long minute of silence, she backed away and swiped furiously at the tears that threatened to drop. I sat there feeling numb all over and my tongue seemed tied. I had no comforting words to say to her. Breaking the thick air Demilade gushed. “You know what? Actually the party flopped big time. I was just too embarrassed to tell you. Like? This was my moment to get laid. Who hosts a party without booze?” I crossed my arms over my stomach in an attempt to catch my breath. “For real?” “No kidding.” She replied. There was nothing more she loved than making me smile. It didn’t take too long before we both threw our heads back and erupted with laughter. ********* I wore a deep grey long-sleeved body con blouse and pencil skirt to the hospital on Tuesday, feeling the need to get it over with and leave. The acrid smell of alcohol and spirit that came with this place made my insides turn. In the reception, a fair lady stood behind the counter with the phone pressed to her right ear, she talked animatedly with the person on the other end, throwing her hands up in the air. What was this place? A phone booth. I held up my right hand in her face and gave her a stern look. Her eyes fell on me and she placed her hand over the phone’s speaker. The conversation must be very interesting. I thought. “Excuse me miss? What can I do for you?” “Yes, thank you. I’ve been standing here for over 5 minutes now and my appointment was for 10a.m, and it’s already twenty minutes past ten” I looked down at my watch and stared back at her. Holding up my card, she replied “We’re really sorry about that. So which of the doctors did you schedule an appointment with?” I rolled my eyes and crossed my arms. It was clearly stated on the card. As if she read my thoughts, she quickly added. “Oh doctor Wale, he is in office 24” She plastered a smile on her face as she returned the card to me. “Thank you.” I straightened and walked towards the door sign that held “office 24”. I softly knocked and a deep voice behind the door ushered me to come in. He had on the thickest lens I’ve ever seen and his eyes were so small behind them. He drummed his fingers on his work table before retrieving the red pen he kept in his bushy hair. From the way he kept chewing his mouth I could tell he always had a sweet or gum in his mouth. “Hello, how are you doing?” he gestured for me to take a seat. “I’m fine. Thank you” He read through my file, squinting his eyes. “So Ademidun, have you been taking your meds? Because here it was stated that, you were due for a therapy last month but you didn’t take it.” His gaze made me shift uncomfortably in my chair. “The therapy was optional besides my meds did most of it” He tapped his pen on his chin. “Been having any symptoms lately?” “Not really, they just come and go.” “Tremors?” “Yes.” He scribbled some prescriptions on the paper before him and stretched it to me. “This should do, for now. But remember, you have to be consistent and try not to skip meals okay?” “Yeah I know. Alright doctor Wale” I let myself out into the busy hallway of people in scrubs. As Fate Would Have It (4) “Hello, good morning, Am I speaking with Miss Temitayo?” The voice over the phone asked. “Ye…ee….sss this is Temitayo, how can I help you?” “You have been selected for the post of the P.A to the C.E.O Adimbos reality.” “P.A?” she asked and slowly placed her hand over a mouth. Temitayo was bewildered. “Wow! really, thank you” she said in a soft shaky voice. “You are to report to work on Monday Miss Temi. The caller said and hanged up immediately. “Oh my goodness”, temi said as she sat on her bed moving her hand down to her throat then chest. “I thought I applied for a receptionist?” She thought trying to clarify what she had just heard. “Phew. At least it’s better than nothing.” She said and rubbed her hand over the bed searching for her phone. “Mama mi must hear this.” “Hello Momma, finally I got a job” She told her mum excited. “Wow! my child congratulation.” Her mum said happily and in tears. Then she mumbled prayers on her daughter. “Amen” Temi repeatedly said smiling. *Monday morning* Temi stood at the door with the words “C.E.O” She sighed heavily and knocked. “You may come in.” His voice boomed. “Good morning, sir.” “Yes, morning.” He his eyes swept over her slowly and returned to his laptop. “I’m sure you’ve been briefed about your position?” “Erm… not really. That wasn’t the post I applied for.” He looked at me again and smirked. “I’m aware of that. This is my company, and I felt that position would suit you better. If you aren’t interested, you’re free to leave.” “No…no…not that. I’ll take the job,” she said. What a prude, she thought. Temitayo plastered a fake smile on her face and looked around his office. This was the first time she was taking in his office. Most of his furniture was black. The room had a beautiful glass backdrop that overlooked the city. Every file on the shelves and his table were neatly stacked. At the corner of the room was a coffee machine. On it was some photo frames which were turned down. She wondered why anyone would choose not to stand a photo frame. He coughed, and she immediately drew her eye back to him. Flexing his expensive watch, he stretched out some papers to her. “Okay, so, in these documents are my schedule and everything your work entails. You will only report directly to me, and you will do whatever task I assign to you that is not in the documents, of course. I hope that’s clear?” She nodded. “Yes, it is.” “Good! Now, excuse me.” Read more here: https://bookishyinka.com/as-fate-would-have-it-4/ |

Always be mine (3) Love knows no bounds “You don’t mean to say dad lost his job!” I exclaimed breathlessly… “are you playing with me right now?” Dad’s salary was never enough from the beginning. But it was better than nothing. Now there wasn’t even anything at all. “Do you think I am in the mood for such?” My younger sister Imisioluwa responded over the phone sounding frustrated. I had called home to update them on my house rent. But I couldn’t get through to either of my parents so I called my sister only to hear much dreadful news of dad losing his job. I was shattered. I could see my whole world spinning right in front of me. “Ella, are you still there?” She asked. I whispered, “Sure I am”. “Please you don’t have to be down. I’m sure things would get better soon enough.” She cajoled I felt it was all a lie that she just wanted to make me feel better at the moment. Nothing was going to be fine. I thought of how bad things would become from now. I had to hang up. I couldn’t take it anymore. I fell to my knees and tears rolled down my eyes. I wondered aloud “Where do I start from?” There was no one to run to. No close relative to help out. Nothing at all. I was still on my knees when I heard my phone ring. it was my dad. “Dad” I croaked. Even my voice sounded foreign to me. “Ella my dear, how are you?” He asked as if he already knew the answer but wanted to be sure. ” I could be better dad.” I sniffed. Looking down at my teardrops on the floor. “Don’t worry my dear I would make sure to provide for your needs in any way I can. You don’t have to worry too much we would get a loan to see you through school. That’s a promise.” Dad sounded broken. I had never heard him sound so vulnerable. I could hear mum consoling him from the background. Hearing that my parents wanted to get a loan made my heart hurt. And because I was the reason even made it worse. We have nothing to use as collateral how do they intend to get a loan then? I thought. It was all tiring. I wiped my tears as an idea struck me. I was too determined to let a minor issue be the end of me and ruin my chances of having a better future. There had to be a solution. I was sure, and the only person who had just the solution to my problem was my mentor, Dr. Benson. Dr. Patricia Benson was one of the best lecturers in the department of political science. I got lucky to be assigned as her mentee. She had proven to be a great pillar of support especially when I had issues with my results in my second year. The most peculiar act of hers was helping students from financially unstable homes get jobs to keep them in school. Coming to the resolution with my thoughts. I immediately texted Dr. Benson. She replied I to meet with her at her office by 3 pm the next day. Humming to one of my favorite songs. I waited for Mo to return from her workplace. I smiled believing that there surely was a bright light at the end of the tunnel. I just had to crawl through the dark tunnel of course. Read more here: https://bookishyinka.com/always-be-mine-3/ |
TAMING HIS DESIRES (3) “I want to be your favorite hello and your hardest goodbye.” Song – You by Omah lay ENITAN’S POV My eyes followed Ademidun till she got lost in the sea of people. I tried to drown Kenny’s voice with the blaring music from the speakers but she kept rambling on. “Enitan, aren’t you excited to see me?” Kenny leapt with her feet barely touching the floor. I massaged the nape of my neck; I couldn’t understand why she had to show up now. I had met Kenny during my final year in UNILAG. We had a thing and it was memorable while it lasted or so I thought. Our last conversation was a week before she left for Finland. “Enitan, I would miss you.” “Kenny, you’re doing this for yourself.” I assured her. “Come with me.” She leaned forward and took my hands. I was grateful for the space between us in the booth. “I can’t Kenny. I have things to do here in Abuja” I couldn’t tag along with her all my life and I was too cowardly to admit that what we had was suffocating. “It’s better this way.” “Please.” She begged. I looked into her eyes and I felt nothing. “I’d always be here for you Kenny. You can call me anytime.” “Promise?” and all I could do was nod. In a flash, her nose flared and the milk shake that previously sat on the table was now emptied on my head. “I knew you never loved me, you just…you just used me. That’s why it’s so easy to let me go.” And she stormed out of the restaurant. Now, she stood here, looking up at me with so much joy and hope. Like we parted on good terms. “When did you get back?” I asked without trying to mask my expression. “Last week Friday. Actually, your mum knew I was back from Chicago but I told her not to mention it to you. I wanted it to be a surprise.” I quirked my left brow and glanced at my watch then I looked far into nothing. Kenny pulled my face down forcing me to look at her. It was then I took notice of her. She wore a tight fitting black gown and all I could think of was how she could breathe in it. Her hair was a mixture of bright pink and purple. It highlighted her face and gave her a sensual look. The red lipstick she wore made her lips pucker. I reminisced about the times her lips made me ache for her touch and how they made me hard by just calling my name. No doubt, Kenny turned the heads of the opposite gender. She ran her hands along my inner thigh and I let out a groan. I shouldn’t be feeling this way but I couldn’t help it either. She commanded desire and passion. I wanted to bend her over her knee and satisfy my wanton need for her. The party was almost over and the sky had become inky black. A gust of wind blew a lady’s umbrella upward. Most people had begun to run for cover. I pulled Kenny with me and walked towards the front exit. “You shouldn’t have come.” She yanked her wrist from my grip and twirled her hair between her fingers. “Why? I don’t think anything has changed between us. Enitan, the long break is over and I’m back for you. You can’t get rid of me that easily.” She snorted. “I assumed you were smarter than this.” Her eyes were livid and she clenched her fist, quickly drawing a deep breath. Almost immediately, her eyes welled up in tears, she blinked her eyes furiously as a tear rolled down her cheek. “I’m sorry. I just wanted to see you.” She hurriedly swiped away a tear before it could drop with the back of her palm. She took my palm in hers and stared down at her feet. I massaged the crease that formed on my forehead and rubbed her palm. “I really missed you Enitan.” She looked up at me through her baby blue contacts “Of course. I missed you too” I plastered on a tight smile and we made for the parking lot. “Where’s your ride?” Kenny pointed towards a red maserati parked in a conspicuous space. I quickly added “nice!” and that did it. She replaced her teary face with a pleased look immediately. What a drama queen. I thought. “Thank you. Daddy got it for my 25th birthday. I was so delighted. But obviously anyone would be delighted too right?” “Hmm… I guess so” I moved towards the driver’s side and held the door open for her. She hesitated for a minute before she stood on her toes and placed a wet kiss on my cheek. She got into the car and passed me a small red box. I shot her a quizzical look. “It’s for your mum.” “Oh, thanks.” She jerked the car in reverse and sped off. The crunching of footsteps on the sidewalk gravel made my head turn. It was my father. He wore a deep grey three piece suit and a raggedy smile. His eyes were worn out but, his brown pupils still managed to twinkle and this time, he wore a clean shaved goatee which did so much for his appearance than the balbo beard he usually wore . He still retained his boyish grin despite his age and his smooth head shone under the parking lot light. I shifted uncomfortably as he approached me. His eyes seemed to bore holes on me. “Enitan, I’m happy you made it” My dad’s cheeks dimpled and he shone his white teeth. “Mum, asked me politely, I couldn’t turn her down” “I know things have not been good between us, but I really hope we can work things out.” He wiped the beads of sweat that formed on his forehead, drawing my attention to his middle finger which was shorter than the others. “If only you could change the past.” He tapped his right foot on the gravel and ran his hands over his head. The corner of his eyes crinkled and stood rooted in a position for far too long. “One day, I hope you would come to understand it all.” Turning toward the towards the entrance, he limped. He never limped. In fact, he was the healthiest man I’ve ever known. Tonight, was different. He looked vulnerable and his usual confidence was missing. What was this I felt? Pity? No it had to be the champagne. I turned towards my car and left. To read more check https://bookishyinka.com/taming-his-desires-3/ |
Always be mine (2) You always gain by giving love Attending a school where academic excellence was their top priority wasn’t any fun sincerely. For one I detested Dr. Lawson’s classes. It was a 7 am class which only made my day worse than it could ever be. His classes were a little bit of lecturing, students hollering, taunting him, and him cussing them out. In all honesty, it was tiring. To cap it all was a two-hour class. Few minutes before his period was almost over my department class rep told us to stay behind for an important discussion. Not again. I sighed. After wasting for the longest 40minutes of my life listening to what Adewale had to say which was clearly of no importance. I grabbed my bag and headed towards my hostel. I stayed off-campus which was a great advantage to me. I couldn’t imagine staying crammed in the school hostel. Not to mention the atmosphere off-campus was way better. I thought I was stressed out but Mo’s demeanor was far worse. Her forehead was creased and she walked around the room like she had the world’s problem on her shoulders. I had to admit she looked funny. I decided not to engage her in a conversation as I was in no mood for any drama. Not today. It could be any other day but not today. The clock on the wall said past 4. I worked part-time at Tasty grills pastry shop. As you would have it, Mo and I were from what you would refer to as a low middle-class family. If at all there was anything like that. But oh well, let’s just say we were barely surviving or living the soft life. Both our school and accommodation fees were paid for by our parents. See, not rich but not poor too. We only decided to assist by working part-time side hustles to cover up some of our everyday needs. I took shifts at Tasty grills as a shop attendant. While Mo sources for modeling gigs. She also doubled as a hairstylist. The money we earned from both jobs thankfully kept us afloat. Just as I thought today was going to end well. What I had been dreading since I started working here happened. The sales account had a discrepancy. Who could have done this? How did the money go out and wasn’t accounted for? The fact that I was in charge of the account for the day made it only worse. I didn’t have money to cover it up. Even my savings wouldn’t be enough. Payday was drawing near, and I knew it would be deducted from it. Not like the money was ever enough to start with. With the little fiber left in me, I walked all the way home. I just wanted to sulk and pretend today never happened. It was a weekend and I was in no mood for anything. The money misplaced last night was a huge blow on me but Mo won’t hear of it. She kept on ranting and asking how. Even I didn’t know how it happened. “Ella” “Yeah?” “What are you up to?” She deadpanned ignoring my sour mood. “No good” I replied. “You are hopeless” she muttered. I couldn’t help but laugh she knew how to brighten my mood. I went into the bathroom and I heard a knock on the door. “Mo, who’s there?” I asked stepping out. We both stared at each other wondering who it could be. We rarely had visitors and since we had very few friends having visitors was quite unusual for both of us. I cautiously walked to the door trying not to trip on my feet. I opened the door and it was the landlord. His face didn’t look like he had something good to say. “Would you quit staring at me and greet me or you intend to take a picture” He barked. “I’m sorry sir www…what did you say”. I was rooted to the spot like an idiot. I thought of many things I could have done after seeing him. Moved aside for him to come in. Moved out of the room to talk to him properly or just said “Good morning”. I was a mess probably because I knew why he was here. He shook his head and looked over my shoulders at Mo. Mo had never liked him since the first day we moved in. So of course, I doubted she would come to my aid at this time. She only murmured a greeting and turned towards her books. ” Well, I’m here to tell you, people, that the house rent has been increased and since you haven’t paid for this year’s rent you are, to begin with, the new payment I hope that’s clear”. He said grumpily. “Eiiiii!” I exclaimed. My jaw must have dropped and been ajar for quite some time because the next thing I noticed was Mo closing my mouth with her fist. “Now that’s not fair, the least you could have done was tap me”. She looked at me like I had grown two heads. “You were practically in wonderland.” She replied clearly exhausted like I was. “Where’s this man?” I said peering into the corridor. “Gone as you can see” She shrugged. At that moment reality hit me that we were in for another rent since it had been increased. I felt quite bad for my parents as they had a lot on their table coupled with expenses of my coming project now an increase in house rent. As if reading my thoughts Mo patted my back comforting me. I sighed. Adulthood was a big scam. Read more here https://bookishyinka.com/ |

Knock! Knock! “Come in.” “Good afternoon sir.” She said as she walked in slowly. Her heart pounding heavily. “Sit down,” he said with his head down while signing the papers in front of him. “What’s your name?” he asked while looking up at her. “My name is Temi…” Temi paused and peered intently at him. The interviewer turned out to be the person she had quarreled with at the motor-park for spilling mud on her dress. “You!” Temi said. “Well Well Well who do we have here, the rude girl.” He said and smirked. She sighed. “My name is Temitayo Johnson” “Okay, Temi let us go straight to the interview, can I see your credentials” “Yes…no…yes sir.” She said confused. “Is it a yes or no Miss?” He asked. “Sorry, sir. Here is it sir” she said passing it to him.” Okay impressive” he said while going through her papers. “Do you have any experience?” He asked. “No sir, but you can give me a chance, I promise not to disappoint you”. Temi replied. “You can go, Miss, you will be called upon if you are selected, thank you.” He said waving her away. “Thank you, sir.” She said dejectedly. |

Oooh no! What do I do now, my dress is ruined and it is almost time for the interview said Temi worriedly. Hurriedly she entered a taxi and went back home to change. TAMING HIS DESIRE (2) ADEMIDUN’S POV “I fell in love with the way you touched me without using your hands” Song – Micasa by Korede Bello I couldn’t wait for the party to be over. My legs were aching from attending tables. These people didn’t have to work for anything, they had it easy. Many times, I have wished to also experience the luxury of people waiting on me. My uniform pinched me in all the wrong places. The things we do to survive. I thought. I walked towards the changing room to rid myself of my uniform. I began pulling off my pumps when Demilade strolled in. We met at a onetime youth convention; we spoke for far too long and gushed about our previous experiences with smiles animating our faces. “Demidun, could you please take over table 6 for me. That’s my last table for the night. There’s a party downtown and I can’t miss it for anything.” Demilade always had excuses up her sleeve. We met at a onetime youth convention; we spoke for far too long and gushed about our previous experiences with smiles animating our faces. Since then, she became a sister I never had. We did almost everything together, she was outspoken and fought for everything she was derived of as a child. She had lost her mum when she was 5 and her dad was incapacitated to be a father figure to her. Maybe, that was just another reason I understood her. I rolled my eyes tapped my chin. “Okay, I’ll do that.” Her eyes lit up like New Year’s Eve fireworks. She wrapped her hands round me and let out a deafening squeal. “Wow. Thanks. You’ll be the first to get dibs on how the party went. It’s quite sad you’d prefer to stay alone than hang out with me tonight.” I dismissed her with the wave of my hand and trudged over to table 6 when I slammed into a three-piece suit, spilling the contents in the tray on him. My feet gave away beneath me and I sprawled flat on my backside, pain shot through my back but I couldn’t take mental note of it. My gaze riveted to the most striking man I’ve ever seen in front of me. He had tousled dark short hair, which glistened under the room light. His finely chiseled face and ebony skin would make a painter weep for joy; his eyes were a mesmerizing deep chocolate with speckles of sunlight glowing through. His suit accentuated his eyes. He twinkled them in amusement and he arched his left brow. My heartbeat raced as cold wet liquids ran down my back. He crouched directly in front of me and I caught a waft of his clean aftershave. I could tell a mixture of cedar wood and cypress. I hungrily inhaled him. “Are you all right?” His voice was soothing and gravelly calm. “uhm… ye…yes.” He held out his hand exposing his Boss Rusy cufflinks and Rolex watch. I placed my shaky palm in his and his grip tightened. His touch sent electric shocks through my body, making heat spread all over me. He narrowed his eyes for a moment and got a vertical wrinkle between his brows before pulling me up with him. “Are you sure?” “I…I’m fine. I’m sorry I ruined your shirt.” His eyes burned through mine, radiating a fierce understanding. “It’s fine.. uhm?” “Ademidun” I licked my lips in an attempt to force more words out but it was futile. I was drawn to him. He stood firmly rooted to the spot with extraordinary elegance. “Ah…Demidun” I let out an inaudible moan. He was the kind of man that could make a woman go on her knees to fulfill his every desires unprovoked. How could someone be sinfully enchanting? Blinking out of my reverie. I released him. My brain jerked back in motion. I was disgusted with myself for being so uncoordinated while he stood there in all his glory. “Er…I’m sorry about your shirt again.” Looking away, I caught sight of a purple dyed hair woman approaching us. “Enitan, I’ve been searching for you all over. I saw your mum at the entrance and she told me you’d probably be inside.” On hearing her supercilious tone, my mouth twisted into a side placement creating a crease in my left cheek. She glanced at me and fixated her gaze on the Adonis male in suit. His eyes carried a mixture of shock and barely contained anger. “Kenny what are you doing here?” I took this as my cue to leave. I retrieved the tray and walked towards the sea of people on the dance floor. Who is this Kenny? Is she going to be a bad luck or what? What history does she have with Enitan?
