Agriculture / Re: A Practical Guide On How To Brood Broilers by papilo90(m): 11:46pm On Aug 30, 2023
coldzobo:

You seem to know a lot about poultry bizz but i can tell you that my mum started this business when she was still backing me and stopped when i was in ss2 to venture into other things. she was very successful while at it.

Now...

-If you look well youd see a led bulb in their house.
Those lamps you see there are not cheap. It cost 12k to get the both of them. The lamps were bought the evening the chicks arrived so It was a hasty decision.

- ogbeni you are wrong. One drinker is not enough for 200 birds. Haba !

-you need to be calming down bros. We didn't use the black bucket for mixing the vaccine. We used the white one.

- we always ventilate their house when necessary.

Thank you for your advice. We learn every day

Op Weldone. You and your mum are doing a great job. However I implore you to open to criticisms and corrections. Your mum might have been doing this before you were born, but it doesn’t mean what she’s doing is the best practice.
I think the aim of that project is profit, and if it is, then you should open up to take some corrections. I actually have quite a number.
First thing I’ll like to tell you is that you can raise your birds to whatever age you desire, but note that profitability is at its peak when you raise broilers at the highest of 6 weeks, 7 weeks max.
You should have a target weight you’re looking at. And that will determine the amount of feed to allocate to the birds.
The correlation of your final average weight to the feed consumed (FCR feed conversion ratio) will tell you how well you have done.
Like I said earlier, if your aim is profit, please take the following corrections.
1. Your brooding “like people said” should be between 5-10 days depending on the weather condition. Most times, I don’t use charcoal beyond 6 days. Only in cold seasons I use up till 10 days.
2. Your pen needs to be well ventilated, even if in the first few days of brooding, you might need ventilation especially during the hot hours of the day. That’s why you see farms use nylons. So that it can be raised and dropped to control the temperature.
3. I’m against the use of those tray feeder beyond a max of 48hrs after chicks arrival. I’ll explain why. I personally use them for just 24 hrs, after which I switch to other chicks feeders which I use till the birds are 10-13 days old before I change to the common adult feeders. Note birds will clog together and sleep inside the tray feeders. They will also poo inside it. The feed inside will become moist and eventually cake. Thereby making you scrape it off. That’s feed wastage.
4. You need to get a small sensitive scale to ensure precision and avoid overdose when administering drugs. All drugs have its dosage and it’s important you follow that.
I have a lot more to say, but ruminate on the above first.
I raise my broilers for a max of 42 days, we start culling at 4 weeks 4 days. And it’s a continuous cycle all year round.
Note I do 8k birds.
If you need pictures, ask I’ll send to you. If you need to come to the farm too, I’ll grant you, in as much as you’re willing to learn. My farm is in Ibadan.
Once again WELDONE.

Before I forget, you were most probably overcharged for the DOC, birds have been selling for btw #200 - #280 in the past few months.

Career / Re: I Need Your Advice On Whether To Relocate To Canada Or Start Poultry Farm by papilo90(m): 3:46pm On Jul 06, 2023
My sincere and honest opinion to you is this. If you really have the means, go ahead with the relocation. From personal experience, at the best, you’ll probably struggle to break even In the poultry business, and you might even not be able to account for your 10M in the next 6 months. The poultry business is flunctuating and the current economic challenge is not helping. It’s not really worth it. Cost of production is on the high side. I’m a poultry farmer by qualification and by experience. So take that money of yours and relocate. Don’t let them sweet talk you into poultry. My 2 cents though.

You're certainly free to apply for your TRV as soon as you've secured an admission into any of the DLI of Canada. February is a good time to apply against fall 2019 and you can also apply towards the end of the year if you have the finances.

Good luck!

Thanks boss

Hello gurus,
I got an admission for fall 2018, but due to some circumstances, I feel I might have little financial issues, so I decided to defer it till fall 2019, I was issued a new admission letter.
I'm thinking of submit an application in February. I hope that time is not to early to apply to apply for a September start date. Also when is the earliest possible time one can apply?

Apologies for posting this long write up.
Good day to you all. Please i want you experienced people here to help me clear my doubt about an issue.
Conversion of GPA from our scale of 5.0 to the US scale of 4.0 is done in ways such as normal calculation, and by evaluating using WES .in most case the evaluated GPA is usually higher than the directly calculated GPA. In a nutshell my GPA of 3.95/5.0 gave me a 3.16/4.0 by normal calculation, but using WES IGPA evaluation, I got a 3.41/4.0.
Now these are my questions
1) When mailing faculty members for graduate positions and they ask for my GPA, can I use the 3.41/4.0 GPA to seek for supervisors or should I use the normal 3.95/5.0 that I have on my official transcript.
NB- the wes evaluation is unofficial.
2) if I were to use the normal 3.95/5.0 GPA, how will schools convert it to their own scale of 4.0.
I don't plan to apply to any school that requires evaluated transcript.
3) I know we have WES US, and WES Canada, but the igpa calculator I used is WES US, will the result be the same for that of Canada, I couldn't find any link for WES Canada igpa calculator.
4) with a good GRE score, can I get a direct PhD with the 3.41/4.0 UG GPA (animal science)

Thanks to you as I anticipate your answers

Gosh! Finally got to the page 396 of this thread and boy, am I glad I did?

I looked back at the two questions I asked here and it's hard not to feel embarrassed. I mean, all of the answers were just lying everywhere on the thread. grin

I literally feel like I know most of you already by following your stories from the days of your GRE and TOEFL, your test days, expectations, disappointments, your acceptance in various schools, visa interviews and how you're coping in the country of study. Like I already said, I am very glad for the experience.

I am writing the GRE in October, and I haven't read jack. I will start classes on Monday that'll run six weeks for the GRE and four weeks for the TOEFL (all done together). I already went through the materials I got from B.Y Mafit and I don't know how to feel - confused? scared? worried? I don't know.

Please, I need as much encouragement as possible. If there are other people who are applying for Fall 2019 who haven't written the GRE yet, please say something as I'd need as much motivation as possible. In fact, let's motivate each other.

My profile:
Undergraduate GPA: 4.11/5
Course studied: Mass Communication
Intended course for Fall 2019: Advertising
GRE: -
TOEFL: -

I can't wait to give my testimony on here also.

P.S. If there is anyone going for an Advertising course in any US school, please holler. I'm yet to see anybody who is currently studying or wants to study Adverstising in the US (both here and the USA visa thread). All I see are tons of STEM courses and few communication courses.

Bro ure not alone, like I told you earlier, I'm also aspiring for fall 2019, yet to take GRE and TOEFL, taking TOEFL Oct ending, and GRE in the first week of Nov.
My profile
Undergraduate. B.Tech Animal science
Intended MSC choice, animal science
UG GPA 3.95/5.0
WES GPA 3.41/4.0
GRE and TOEFL........ Loading.
Funding is a must oooooo, no funding, no proceeding. grin grin grin
As regards classes I'll join you a week after you've started yours.
So hang on for me. I'll join you soon.

Please this is the wes igpa calculator...am i entering the write figures?

That 6 opposite 61 is a typo mistake tho

I don't think you're doing it right. like if you have 83A in a 4 unit course, to fill that in. The 83 will enter into the space for grade, and 4 will enter into the space for credit. And so far its an unofficial conversion, you need not waste your time in outing the course titles. Just out your grades and the credits.

Nice profile. So what schools are you applying to?

How do I access the WES unofficial grading? I'll like to also know what my GPA is on the scale of 4.0
Well the profile isn't so good. I'm just working and hoping I get a good GRE score.
As regards the school I will be applying to, I've not made up my mind, I have a list of about 12 schools, I'm still doing extensive research so I can shortlist later.
For the WES conversion. Use this link https://applications.wes.org/igpa-calculator/igpa.asp
Fill in d details and click continue, you will have to input your transcript details, but note that you will fill in all courses in your transcript and its units INDIVIDUALLY, (I mean all the courses you took from 100L to 400 or 500L as the case may be.

Are you sure this profile can enter Cornell especially your GPA? Just thinking though
Yes it can, putting in mind that GPA is not the only factor considered for admission, my LOR, experience in my field, my GRE score among others will also be considered.
The most important fact is that in most schools, my department require you to talk to faculty members first, then if you have any of them agree to accept you, you can go ahead to apply. Its strongly advised not to apply if you've not gotten a supervisor.
The same process got me admitted into Canada. I had to seek a supervisor, who did Skype interview with me, and also made me write an academic article. Before he accepted me.
With this method, one is almost certain to get admitted.

I am not even surprised. I mean, Cornell is an ivy-league school.

Yes the school is highly ranked, and I've had my eye on that school for long, but it's a pity that my department does not provide assistantship for international students.

I want to thank everybody on the forum - the founding fathers, the gurus who took up the mantle...everybody. I have been a silent reader since last year. I took the GRE exam on Friday. Although it has been mentioned so many times here, but there is nothing that can actually prepare one for how tough that exam is. Infact, apart from using materials like NOVA, Manhattan to have the knowledge of the basics, i think one should not even bother with them. In terms of how tough the exam was, only few materials like Magoosh, ETS big book(RC) have similarities. The first Verbal and Quant section were 'bitter', very very bitter and downright evil to set an exam as tough as that. The next Verbal was easy, so much so that I was suspicious...then the last Verbal section was medium regarding how tough it was. All in all the sequence was VQVQV.
My unofficial scores are Verbal - 161 and Quants - 155. I got distracted a few weeks to the exam due to having confirmation of Canadian permanent residency because there were some series of full tests (Princeton) that I was getting better scores. Nevertheless, I will take the score and be grateful to God and man for the help rendered.

Undergraduate - Biochemistry 3.38/4 (WES CANADA)
Graduate - Industrial Chemistry 3.62/4 (WES CANADA)
No publications, research experience restricted to thesis for the above degrees. Was able to send scores to the following quartet -

PhD Polymer Chemistry - University of Victoria,
PhD Engineering Chemistry - University of British Columbia
PhD Polymer Chemistry - University of British Columbia - Okanagan
PhD Engineering Chemistry - University of Alberta

Congratulations boss. Great result.
Please ill like you to tell me how I can get my GPA converted to the WES Canada level. (I mean the unofficial free evaluation). Pls drop a link or so that I can use. Thanks man.

Cool and all good and noted. But I think the person asking the question was asking why he was not charged biometrics fee when he applied and people were of the opinion that if you use the same account, one is not required to take a second biometrics if he had taken it before. This is incorrect information, every time you have to appear for biometrics. Effective July 31st is when the rules will change.

Yea, you should be able to get a scholarship/tuition waiver, however some certain conditions are involved, although its not so easy in our line/discipline. I also studied animal science, but my grade is a second class upper. You will need to tell if if you did GRE or if you are preparing to do.

Very true. And no matter how much we try, we cannot repay our mums enough.
Its just a pity that most of our ladies nowadays are not so close to having all these qualities, not that they arent good wives , but the society has created a vacuum BTW these generations. Ull HARDLY find any one with these qualities especially when they are employed. But somehow our mothers managed work and also these things simultaneously.
GOD BLESS MY MOTHER.
