wisdomedozie: Dear op,
Bank jobs are pretty generic. They're not so specialized. You can study any course to work in a bank and you don't need a post graduate degree. Contrary to popular beliefs, bank jobs are one of the easiest to get on merit (without connections) but a number of factors come into play:
1. Your age: most banks set the entry level age limit between 24 and 27 years
2. Class of degree: 4 out of every 5 banks will require a minimum of 2:1
3. Aptitude Tests: This is what disqualifies most candidates. A lot of graduates know next to nothing about aptitude tests. They could take a number of formats: -GMAT -GRE -SHL -Abstract Reasoning These tests require a lot of practice to build proficiency if you don't have a math background. That's why you find a lot of engineering graduates in banks
4. Information Almost all banks recruit at least once a year and these opportunities are posted on several job sites
5. Assessment Centers This involves group discussions and tasks that usually culminate in a presentation by members of a group. Your presentation skills could stand some improvement
In summary, banking may not as attractive as it used to be in the early 2000s, however it can serve as a launch pad into the corporate world. It is also worthy of note that there are other departments in the bank asides operations and marketing. The best time to start preparing for a bank job is while you're in school. Learn about the aptitude tests, get the best grades you can, learn how to write CVs and cover letters, create a profile on LinkedIn, meet bankers or friends that have siblings or relatives that are bankers.
PS: Feel free to contact me for materials on the aptitude tests Thanks for this |

Jamoojazzy: This is not what he asked you.
It's not all bankers that sleep with their Bosses, and it's not all Boss that are interested in sleeping with their subordinate, Stop this unnecessary allegations against female bankers, stop painting them black. Stop damaging their reputation, it's not a crime for ladies or Women to work in financial institutions irrespective of her department.
One thing is certain, Anybody that want to be flirt or Womanize will definitely do that, irrespective of the organization he/she works with. So it's more of personal choice not Generic, so not all bankers are flirt.
I left my banking job February this year (2months ago) and it's because I got a better offer with a UK Based Software/Healthcare Company. I work across 3 commercial banks within 5years.
So as for the person that asked question, you don't need any extra qualification to work in a bank, whether as core staff or outsourced, Your degree in any field has qualified you to be a Banker, You'll be trained specifically on the role, you are employed for. So after that if you have time & resources to further, you can then go ahead. I studied Education Economics and today I can compete with graduates of different disciplines. Go for it if you have passion for Banking, but mind you it's not an eazy place to work, very stressful, I hope this answer your Questions Thanks it does answer my question. But which training did you go through to be able to work across 3 commercial banks in a space of 5 years? Entry level training program? |

Psittacus: Good evening, I noticed you have been prowling about, looking for info on how to get a banking Job. It pretty easy.
As a recent graduate, just keep searching for graduate training positions. Most banks recruits every year. You don't need any specific qualifications. Your degree in any field would do.
After you have been successful in the training school, you will be employed on probationary bases, mostly for a period of six months. If you scale through, now welcome to being a core staff. it now up to you to find your way up the deadly pyramid of banking profession. Thanks for this. Very detailed However, do you know how I can access the website of any of these banks where they post available graduate trainee programs. |
Career › Re: What Are The Requirements To Apply For A Bank Job by Paramountgift(op): 7:27pm On Apr 27, 2022 |
Jobia: Yeah, more or less. Although most times graduate trainee programs would require going through a probationary training period before you're absorbed. Anyway the reason i mentioned this is because they are more likely to overlook your course of study and/or technical skills with these programs. You only need to prepare well for the tests and interviews. Oh..ok |

Jeon: Banks will usually require a bachelor's degree in management.
Cash handling skills
Handling currency
Excellent mental math
Attention to detail
Financial knowledge
software knowledge I guess the bank training program should cover that, especially for newbies |
Career › Re: What Are The Requirements To Apply For A Bank Job by Paramountgift(op): 5:54pm On Apr 27, 2022 |
pocohantas: Those are the stages;
Application - aptitude test- interviews - banking school - start work
Every bank has a banking school for CORE STAFF. Mostly in Lagos/PH and Abj. You probably do not hear of it because most bankers these days are on contract. So they only do induction or learn on the job.
Training school is 2-4months. I am not sure I have seen any that is more than that. Thanks |

annisy: From my personal experience I will tell you that 80% of bank jobs in Nigeria are outsource to other recruiting firms!! While the remaining 20%are based on PR, I will encourage you to to look for someone who can recommend you for employment in his or her bank. And forget about the pursuit of certificate for now if you have a first degree Nigeria bank sector careless about certificate and degrees, least I forget the 20% are actually the main bank staff--try enter through the 20% e get why Hmm.. issorite |
Career › Re: What Are The Requirements To Apply For A Bank Job by Paramountgift(op): 5:26pm On Apr 27, 2022 |
pocohantas: Nothing special
FORE CORE STAFF;
Be less than 26 for most banks. I think it is only Access that is 24. Have 2.1 (and above) for most banks, from a RECOGNIZED institution.
Any course you study is your business.
Apply via the portal, a staff (sometimes they allow junior staff drop one or two CVs).
Write aptitude test. Do interviews- panel and one or two with a senior officer. ED/MD as the spirit leads.
Get into a training school. Score 75% and above for most banking schools. You get paid and fed in your training school with enough activities. You fit forget wetin carry you come if you no dey careful. Too many fine boys and girls forming love wey posting go scatter.
In the training school, your course of study would help. Most business students would understand the terms and won’t struggle to grasp it. Engineering students do better in calculation courses once they pick up the basics.
Get posted to a unit. The top 3 and memorable students tend to get preference. The rest would end up in Marketing or Operations.
Northerners are ALWAYS (98%) sent back to the North. They like it that way.
Connection is just a very negligible few. Very detailed. Thanks for this. However, you mentioned applying via the portal, writing aptitude test, doing interviews and getting into a training school. Do all these requirements come after applying via the portal or are they seperate ways to get a banking job. Also, what banking schools are there and what's the average duration of their training programs, cause I don't usually hear about those. |

mantote: I am a banker and I will advice any young guy that gets banking job now to take it up.But you must watch out cos there are bankers and there are bank workers.if a bank is offering you job through any of theor outsourcing company, run away cos you will be mortgaging your future.as a contract staff, you have no clear cut career pathway, you cannot move from one bank to another or to a similar industry. Also, never take up marketing job in a bank cos the targets are unrealistic and your branch location can be a limiting factor to the type of customers you can get and your boss will hardly allow you to travel long distances to market people you know personally and this people you know personally will not even want to take their funds afar.I will only advise guys who intend to going abroad to school after two yrs to take up marketing jobs since you may eventually lost your job.so use that two year grace period to save. But on a sincere note,a banking career is good if one gets employed as a core staff in any bank that respects human capital as an asset. This is because you will learn about life fast and get good experience that can prepare you for other sectors.A banking job will also enable you to be able to afford payment for professional exams that will prepare you to work in other sectors outside banking in the nearest future.I will rather drive taxi as a self employed gtaduate than work in the civil service except in research institutes, university settings and other semi_corporate civil service settings like firs, efcc, icpc, federal mortgage bank, etc How does a person become a core staff at a bank from entry level. What stage should the person go through? Is it bank teller, customer service representative, or he or she should go for an executive training program. |
Jobs/Vacancies › Re: How To Get A Banking Job In Nigeria by Paramountgift(f): 5:12pm On Apr 27, 2022 |
youngdav: Banking job in Nigeria is a job for those who aspire to be the best in all they do, the environment in this industry is highly competitive. A moment of weakness on your part could place you on the sidelines. Being good on the job is not rocket science, it is something that happens with your commitment, passion and loyalty to the system.
But to be in contention for beating the competition, you have to get the job first; and that is the purpose of this article. From my personal experience, it cannot be said that getting employed by a bank is difficult or easy. The reason is because there are a lot of variables which compels banks to recruit.
Depending on the variable, which is never constant from year to year, it directly determines the processes involved and the duration of the selection exercise.
There are two major forms of recruitment obtainable in the industry, they are:
Executive Trainee Experienced hire Executive trainees are the sets of candidates comprising of fresh graduates not more than 26 years of age. A banking career in Nigeria usually starts from this level.
QUALIFICATIONS FOR EXECUTIVE TRAINEE HIRE
To be in position to apply for a bank job as an ET, you will have to possess the following requirements:
Should not be above 26years of age Should possess a degree (BSc or HND) not less than second class upper Gone through NYSC Possess good communication skills Smart and young Now these are the basic qualifications for ET, if you possess the above requirements congratulations you have passed the first step. The second step is the unwritten requirements and this is where you have to do your homework. You have to prepare a great CV and a cover letter that will sell you better. Consider yourself as someone convincing and telling the bank what you are and what you can offer, the interview time does not last more than 10mins, but your resume and credentials stays in their possession after you are long gone, so how you arrange your CV and credentials represents you. Remember to use professional email address for your CV, what I mean is using your full name in your email, not some odd and informal expressions like sweetchick@yahoo.com or john1986@gmail.com. Ensure that your date of birth dose not conflict, cross check what you have on your WAEC certificate with your birth certificate.
HOW TO SUBMIT YOUR APPLICATION
There are different avenues one can submit applications, in this digital era all banks have a human resources page on their websites that accepts job applications. There are times were it has to be hard copy in designated branches. Again it depends on the need and the sense of urgency. The key here is to get the right information at the appropriate time.
THE BANK WILL CONTACT YOU
After submitting your application, it may take some time to be contacted by the bank for either aptitude test or interview. Either step that comes first depends on the urgency of the process. There are situations where aptitude test will be bypassed and it may just be series of interviews. Make sure your phones and emails are reachable at this stage.
THE TRAINING SCHOOL
After going through aptitude test and interviews, successful candidates are enlisted for the banks’ training school, every bank has a name for their training school, and it usually takes between 3 to 6 months depending on the bank.
During this period, the bank will train you on all their processes and duly equip you with requisite knowledge on how to beat the competition in the industry. There are also series of examinations and written test in the school, failing any test or exam at any stage of the training may mark your exit from the process, which is why you have to be at your very best.
Successful completion of the program translates into a brand new career for you, that makes you an executive trainee (ET) of the bank and this is the starting level.
EXPERIENCED HIRE
The experienced hire in the banking industry is when a banker is switching to another bank. The process is not the same with the executive trainee, this is because they are already in the system with some years of experience.
The qualifications are:
Bachelors degree or HND (second class upper) Additional qualification is an added advantage Must have some years of banking experience Must be cleared from the previous bank (integrity wise) There may be other requirements depending on the bank, but these are the basic requirements for experienced hire. Successful candidates are usually placed one step above their current level but never below.
These are just my personal experience in the industry, and I hope it helps one step further in actualizing your dreams of becoming a banker. Congratulations in advance.
Source :http://www.eleganceng.com/2017/12/how-to-get-a-banking-job-in-nigeria/ Good day. And thanks for this post. Please how does one become an executive trainee, and would one get a certificate after the program? |
