Not only africa, i have seen study that humans have polygamy trait, but due to jealousy, raising family and so many factors including religion (christianity) mainly, because we might have been influenced by european culture. You can see that muslim are polygamy but mainly infuence by religion and middle eastern culture, some people might just prefer single spouse due to complexity that it involves, as you can see at this point it is the society that influence how we view it.
