ProgrammingRe: Learning Visual Basic by parosky(m): 3:42pm On Jul 18, 2006
VB is arguably the easiest language to learn. I'll advise you go ahead and learn VB.Net because that's where microsoft is now. They stopped support for VB6 which is far easier, though there are still many people who'll rather stick with VB6 Some people still program in VB5 and even VB4 (but I doubt if there's any in Nigeria).
VB.Net will require at least 256MB RAM, about P3 800MHz, and about 2 GB hard disc depending on the kind of installation you want. This is what microsoft documentation says but you better go well beyond this if you want to enjoy your programming experience at all. I use 512MHz RAM, 1.13GHz P3 processor. Get VB.Net 2005 or download the express edition from here

     http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/support/install/

VB6 will require far less hardware configuration. I once ran VB6 on a P1 machine though it was not a fantastic experience.

You can easily get any of the visual studio since you are in Lagos.

What's your email address I can send a pdf file to you depending on your stated preference. Study them and ask questions

I was only able to download a blank word document. May be you'll help attach it again or just copy and past it directly. At times opening attachment is a distraction to some people

If you go back to the site you should be able to download it. I saw a similar message at that site before
Anyway you'll get the one I have. Just taking some time for it to be attached. It's about 8.71mb

immortalme,

Too bad you did not get to download the file. It's a zip file of 3 .chm files
I sent one to your box. Just let me know you got it.
They are good materials.
ProgrammingRe: What Aspect Of Programming Gives You Problems? by parosky(m): 8:54am On Jul 03, 2006
I hate bugs in program. You put on you computer to spend hours debbugging, got frustrated, power down to go and relax and find yourself thinking of where the problem is. Your wife's talking to you and all you are seeing is your code module. She noticed you've not been paying attention to her and asked what you're thinking about. You dare not say it's your code that is not working. After spending like 8 hours at the computer you can't even listen to her for 2 minutes with any attention at all.

I hate writting comments too.
ProgrammingRe: Embedded Programming by parosky(m): 8:37am On Jul 03, 2006
I wonder if there is any language that will not do justice to this piece. But I only write VB and java. The platform on which it will run will be the determinig factor. I assume you are thinking about some handheld devices which means C++,java will be OK
I can help get some things you 'll need but probably in one to two weeks as I'm into some thing for now. I can even try my hand on the project and show it to you if you don't mind. But it will be in VB.net or java.

Who says your career can be jeopardised until you agree it is? At what level do you want to be playing? If at the level of those big time players that you are looking up to, I think you'll need to get more learning in any discipline that interest you. Those guys are no mediocres in education at all. That's talking about guys doing big time IT work. Nothing takes the place of learning - both formal and informal. Get a computer and work on your own, get attached to some people who can train you more. Your level of learning is so obvious in your short posting and you said you only have "diplomal in systme information, " among other errors right from the title of the thread. They all can't be typographical errors.
Then visit this site often.

All
Some people may not agree with my opinion because they think "grammar no be money" or Bill Gate did not get a formal education or that IT is an all-comer affair or some graduate have bad command of english. But this site goes a long way to project the depth of knowledge of Nigerians, and their command and knowledge of their language of instruction shows the world the stuff we are made of. I am not really particular about the command of english, just the level of education he's attained so far. Put one silly grammatical blunder in the comments of your code and your colleagues will be wondering what you are trying to do until they spend hours trying to study the code. A waste of their time which is uncalled for.

Nairaland GeneralRe: Who Will Kiss You If Your Teeth Are Discolored? by parosky(m): 3:59pm On Jun 29, 2006
Odidis,
You're just trying to promote this website and/or their product. Well we can hope you'll raise so much awareness to push some people to see the dentist for teeth whitening. Benefit and outcome of the procedure in many instances can not justify the accompanying headache you will go through.
Color of teeth is just like skin complexion which vary greatly among individuals. People have varying shades of white which does not mean their teeth are discolored. There are only few discoloration that will warrant serious attention. Most tooth discoloration will be taken care of with adequate oral hygiene measures.
HealthRe: Prenatal Diagnosis Of Sickle Cell Disorder: Good Or Bad? by parosky(m): 3:15pm On Jun 29, 2006
Guess you people talking are doctors. At least Genial.
This is basically an ethical issue. In medicine there are many factors that come into play before taking a particular decision. If SCD is determined in-utero and the mother decided on terminating the pregnancy, I think she should be allowed to take such decision. Do you imagine what agony you have saved a woman who would add another sickler to about 3 she already had. Some of them had died and her in-law (in African setting) are breathing down her neck that she is a witch who killed her own children. Marital, psychological, economic, social problems and all. The problem is almost similar to that faced by some families plagued by some congenital abnormalities such as erythroblastosis fetalis, congenital thrombocytopenic purpura to mention a few. (A woman would actually be reluctant to be discharged home from the hospital because she lost another newly born as she would not want to meet her in-laws with the story)

Yes it only cost getting to their web site, completing their form, and waiting for about 2 weeks. Nothing more. No money involved.
HealthRe: Diarrhoea And Teething In Children: What Is The Truth by parosky(m): 2:11pm On Jun 28, 2006
There are many situations that can result in diarrhea in children which are more important than teething. Proper and immediate attention should be paid to diarrhea in children and help should be sought as soon as they arise as diarrhea in infants can be rapidly fatal.
The association between teething and diarrhea in infant is basically a hygiene issue. The incidence is not as high in the high socioeconomic group with clean environment. Around the age of 6month when a child started bringing the first set of teeth, they are crawling and the tendency for them is to pick objects from the floor and straight into the mouth, they are likely to pick up dropped food item. Introduction of bacteria into the intestinal system gives rise to such diarrhea.
The emerging tooth make an "opening" in the gum through which bacteria introduced into the mouth as such can have access into the circulatory system to cause diarrhea and fever etc.

NORMAL TEETHING SHOULD NOT BE ACCOMPAINIED BY DIARRHEA OR ANY OTHER CONSTITUTIONAL SYMPTOMS

You can give some more detail so that we can know what's on your mind for the design. What kind of device? Does not look like the programming logic will be extremely difficult though.

I did not abandon the thread, the fact that no one is trying to do the assessment apart from skima was enough to discourage me to continue.
You don't need to be discouraged. Just know some people are keenly reading even if not giving feed back. I'd have been trying the assignment out myself but for time. I am a medical practitioner write java and vb but stronger in vb. So i found time to read you at work but soon I'll be trying your assignment out and getting back to you. Pls don't stop.

I think you really deserve the rest. Welcome back

@ parosky your right in what u said but one must always lets him self down in ohter to learn from the people above him
Well nobody knows it all. In a forum like this what you gain will depend on what people percieve as the level you are. If you make people believe you are totally new they will be giving you low stuffs. Let people know where you are so that the vibrations will be at a level that will benefit you, not that we'll be telling a guru who is being "humble" about variable declaration.
I'm still looking for your email address.

Man, I appreciate your help.
No o they are on different windowsXP installation on different hard disc though on the same system. I got another hard disc purposely for this reason. Could they have any effect on each other? I don't think so. What do you think? I will try out your suggestion when I get home as I'm at work now? But then can you give me the basis for your suggestion.

The 2003 alone was like that. That's what made me try the 2005 which was no different.
ProgrammingRe: Connecting To A Database Using Visual Basic by parosky(m): 12:16pm On May 31, 2006
There are various ways by which you canconnect to a DB. If you are new to VB database programming, I will advise you to use Active X Data Object(ADO). There are 2 means of achieving this.
1. Through a ADO data control (Adodc). Place the adodc on your form and click the ellipses next to the connectionstring property. On the Provider tab of the window shown, select your data provider, e.g select Microsoft Jet OLEDB 3.51(or 4.0) depending on the version of microsoft access you are using, that is if you are connecting to microsoft Acess. On the connection tab, use brose to navigate to the path of your database (the access file*.mdb) This is the simplest you need to do, then click on Test Connection button to see you are connected to your database). Then set the Record source properties to indicatewhether you recordset will be from a table, stored procedure or a sql command.  You can then bind controls to displayvalue of each field that will be exposed by your recordset. NB Adodc is not in your tool box by default. You need to add it ( click project>> components then select Microsoft ADO DataControl 6.0 (OLEDB). then click apply button and OK. This show the adodc in your toolbox.

2. Similar to the first but gives you a whole lot of control over your data is to program directly against the ADO Object. You will not need to use the Adodc but you sould set a reference to an ADO object. Click Project >>Reference.
Then
(i) Declare an object variable whose type is ADODB.Connection in the general section of you code or module e.g Dim myConn as
  ADODB.Connection
.  then create the object by writing Set myConn = new ADODB.Connection
ii)Set the Connection object’s ConnectString property to reflect a valid OLE DB provider, or specify the provider string in the next step, as follows:
myConn .ConnectString = "Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.3.51;"
iii)Call the Connection object’s Open method. If you didn’t specify the ConnectString property in the preceding step, you need to pass the connection string as the first argument to the Open method, as in the following example. Better still reproduce the following format ( to reduce my typing explanations actually)
dim dbPath as string
myConn.Provider=“Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.3.51;”
dbPath="c:\my documents\myDB.mdb"
myConn.Open dbPath

This connect you to the database against which you can now give query to retrieve your recordset. But I feel you are new to database programming. You can ask some more question to let me know I've been helpful and to tell me area where you need more help. I'll check back tommorrow
ProgrammingVisual Studio .NET(VS.net) Problems by parosky(op): 11:05am On May 31, 2006
Can someone please help before I remove this thing from my system.

I have 2 installations of VB.Net ( a 2003 and 2005) but the problem with them is that the message box will not display the prompt message at runtime. Also the combo box drop down will not show the items contained in the list. I thought it is my hardware problem but a friend who had a simlar problem said it resolved spontaneously. So I changed my RAM to 512 (from 128). But to no avail. What way out? someone encounter similar problem?
