The greatest Governors are remembered for what they built, not what they stored away. That is why many people still remember the legacy of Sam Mbakwe decades later. Governors are not elected to be accountants but builders. --Chioma Amaryllis Ahaghotu The job of a state governor is very similar to that of a CEO. A CEO is not hired to sit on cash; a CEO is hired to grow the company. If a CEO spends four years proudly announcing that he saved money while competitors expanded, built factories, entered new markets, increased production, created jobs, and grew revenue, shareholders would remove him. Why? Because money is a tool, not the end goal. The same principle applies to governance. A governor's primary responsibility is not to keep money in a vault. A governor's job is to grow the state's economy, attract investment, create jobs, improve infrastructure, increase internally generated revenue, and leave behind assets that continue producing value long after leaving office. The equivalent of profit in governance is economic growth. Increasing the GDP of a state should be one of the major objectives of any governor. That means building roads that connect markets, developing industrial parks that attract manufacturers, creating agricultural processing centers that add value to farm produce, investing in tourism infrastructure that attracts visitors, establishing technology hubs that create high-paying jobs, and building modern transportation systems that improve productivity. These are investments, and investments cost money. No serious CEO says, "I saved all the company's money and built nothing." Imagine visiting a state after four or eight years and the biggest achievement people can point to is an account balance buried somewhere in a government report. Citizens do not live inside spreadsheets, budget documents, or quarterly reports. People experience governance physically. They see roads and bridges, hospitals, schools, industrial clusters, airports, water systems, housing developments, public transportation, markets, and thriving economic activity. Those are the things that improve daily life. A governor should leave fingerprints on the landscape of the state. The evidence of governance should not require citizens to search through audit reports, government websites, or budget documents. It should be visible from the moment someone enters the state. The greatest governors are remembered for what they built, not what they stored away. That is why many people still remember the legacy of Sam Mbakwe decades later. We do not remember him because he saved money. We remember him because of the roads, institutions, and numerous projects that were built before many of us were even born and are still standing today. Nobody visits a state and says, "Wow, look at that savings account." People point at a bridge, a rail line, an industrial estate, a university, a modern hospital, a thriving city center, or an airport. These are tangible assets that continue creating wealth years and even decades after a governor has left office. Of course, reckless spending is bad governance, and nobody is advocating waste. However, there is a significant difference between wasteful spending and productive investment. Borrowing money to pay salaries is not the same as borrowing money to build infrastructure that expands economic activity and generates future revenue. Spending billions on political patronage is not the same as spending billions on projects that increase productivity and attract private investment. The question should never be whether a governor spent money or saved money. The real question is what the governor spent the money on and what return the state received from that investment. At the end of the day, governors are not elected to be accountants. They are elected to be builders. And history remembers builders. we don't need a president that will keep our money in a bank and called it achievement.peter obi is a disaster. |
