Religion / There Is Nothing Like ‘money Rituals. by pastorjesuseun1: 7:44am On Jan 03, 2020
The gruesome murder of the Lagos State University student, Miss Favour Daley-Oladele, by a self-deluded young man in pursuit of an illusion of “money rituals” is saddening. According to reports, Favour’s boyfriend, Owolabi Adeeko, had allegedly connived with a pastor, Segun Philips, who promised to make a potion that would magically draw money for Adeeko and his mother. Now that they have been busted, the pastor claimed the ritual failed because “the spirit did not bring any money.”

I am uncertain if he genuinely believed that money would magically surface or he was merely making things up for the press, but here is the truth: There is nothing like money ritual. There has never been, and there never will be.

There is nobody that claims that “money ritual” is real that can also substantiate it. The evidence people tender about its efficacy is typically reportorial, or some fantasy they picked up from home movies. Meanwhile, Nollywood filmmakers too have never seen money rituals work either. What they rehash are urban myths and similar tales. Nobody, I repeat, nobody can make money come out of thin air or conjure it from another location. The so-called prophet also promised Adeeko’s mother she would be getting contracts. That too is impossible. Nobody gets contracts because they draw on supernatural forces. They either get it because they keep company with those that give out the contracts, or because they provide unique services.

It is imperative we vigorously debunk such superstitions for the sake of the poor people who fall prey to these grifters. Is it not curious that with all the claims of efficacy of money rituals in Africa, nobody can identify a single billionaire who made their money from such magic? If spirits can bring cash or a decapitated head stewed in magic potions can truly make anyone rich, why are Africans still the poorest people in the world? Should the beneficiaries of such magic not be standing shoulder to shoulder with the billionaires of this world like Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg? If it were possible to conjure money, no pastor or shaman would render such a service to anyone and for a paltry sum of N210,000 as Phillips collected. They would keep it for their own benefit!

I am pretty sure that some readers already disagree with me on this issue. Their belief in the viability of money rituals is, honestly, understandable. We were socialised in a culture that constantly bombarded us with such narratives. From popular culture to religious houses, they told us stories of spirits who ran errands that enriched certain people. But when you think about it in a broader context, you find that these accounts of mystical wealth thrive largely in African societies. From East to West, Central, and South Africa, there are historical and sociological strands that connect cultures where people believe money can be magically produced. One is a history of poverty, exploitation, and consequent disillusionment. While benighted folk are sagged down by the shame of excruciating poverty, they also see the excessive amount of wealth held by some other people on the other side of the class divide. These fortunate folk, unlike them, thrive despite not being engaged in the labour that is traditionally connected to wealth generation.

When people do not see a rational link between what some wealthy people do for a living and the bullion vans that drive money into their compound, they begin to accept that there must be some truth to the belief that spirits dispense favours. This belief is further strengthened when religious leaders who cavort with corrupt politicians to get their own share of resources also promote the belief in miraculous money to sacralise their ill-gotten wealth. Then popular culture too churns out stories of money rituals that feed (off) these belief cycles, not because they know things for a fact but because the stories are easy for cultural producers to regurgitate without doing the hard work of plumbing the depths of the mind to find compelling narratives.

Then, there is the media that uncritically reports stories of “money rituals” to a credulous audience. I raised the issue of the role played by the media in promoting these falsities years ago when I wrote on the discovery of the ritualists’ den in Soka, Ibadan. While reporters regaled us with tales of the horrors that uncovered in that location, there was no in-depth investigation into what actually went down in that place. Various reports of Soka “house of horror” took it for granted that actual money ritual activities happened, and that the victims were being used to generate currencies. The reality could just be organ harvesting by traffickers, but we do not know. And some other stories we hear —such as women’s underwear being used for money rituals— are just urban myths that got taken too seriously by perverts and the gullible who started raiding everywhere for panties.

It is hard for an average European to believe in money rituals in the same way as Africans. That is not because they are above superstitions —no society in the world is immune to them— but because they run a society where, over time, they have established a logical connection between the factors of production, money, and politics. Their social mechanisms are systematised, and because productivity and money typically go together in their daily experience, the belief in money conjuration will hardly find a landing place in their imagination. In African societies where we are far more of consumers than producers, we attach mysticism to money because wealth generation in our culture is mostly based on an extractive economy —we disembowel the earth for resources we can sell— and the corruption that naturally follows such exchange. The fantasy that some spirits can somehow bring money is spun by those trying to find their way out of the disorganisation that characterises life and the shrinkage of opportunities for upward mobility.

Those who claim they can generate money for people through rituals, and who demand human lives for that purpose, do so for various reasons. One, they want to build a powerful reputation in the minds of people. If they succeed, it pays off in other ways. By asking for their clients to procure human body parts, they seduce them into believing they have access to supernatural forces, and that power is so potent that it requires human life to access. Rituals that supposedly produce money or political power do not work based on any such telepathic connections. Instead, its spectacular effect manipulates people’s beliefs and obliges them to take certain courses of action. Two, some of those who ask for a human to be sacrificed are, in reality, psychopaths who want to carry out their sick fantasies on unsuspecting victims. They not only exploit the gullibility and desperation of their clients, but they also use them to bring friends and relatives to them. Three, they are abusing foundational beliefs. The superstitions about money rituals and the sacrificial victims required have traceable links to our African past. However, because they have never clearly understood why our ancestors found those beliefs expedient for their time, those histories become exploitable. In different parts of Africa, hunchbacks, albinos, and even bald men regularly fall victim to the enterprise of money rituals.

We should challenge these myths of money rituals and save our lives from the machinations of evil imaginations. From Nigeria to Tanzania to Malawi to Mozambique, poor people are being hunted down. These predators who want to do money rituals need to be educated out of their wits that have been addled by poverty and ignorance. Those who want to enjoy the nicer things of life but find themselves forever incommoded by crushing poverty need to learn that their poverty is political and therefore, cannot be magically resolved. We are the poorest continent in the world because of politics, and our redemption will not come through either magic or miracles but in reformative policies. We should raise our voices and shout this loud enough so that more people do not become unfortunate victims.

Politics / Reps Ask Buhari To Cancel Military’s Operation Positive Identification Exercise by pastorjesuseun1: 7:23pm On Oct 29, 2019
Members of House of Representatives have urged President Muhammadu Buhari to call off the planned operation positive identification exercise of the military.

In a motion raised by the House minority leader, Ndudi Elumelu as a matter of urgent public importance, the lawmaker expressed worry that the exercise will instill fear in the heart of Nigerians.

The motion also maintained that the operation will strip Nigerians of their constitutionally guaranteed freedom of movement and instill fear, anxiety and panic in the entire polity, adding that the nationwide operation would amount to an indirect imposition of a state of emergency across the country by the Army.

In their contributions, some lawmakers opined that it is the responsibility of the police and not the army.

The house committee on army is to meet with the chief of army staff for a clearer understanding of the motive of the operation

how I wish I was at the back sit with your gal you will understand better.

Excuse my grammatical blunders. I just feel like sharing this experience i had with my fiancee to be....

Yesterday being sunday, I decided to fix a movie and fun outing with my girl. I ordered a taxi from my base to her base to pick her up. She came looking fine and sweet to enjoy the sunday with...To cut the long story short to the main reason i'm posting this....

I came out of the taxi from the FRONT SEAT gave her a hug and opened the back door for her then closed the door to go back to my normal position, She gave me a bad look from nowhere, i asked her what's wrong, she told me to come to the back, the driver could hear us clearly, i playfully told her baby don't worry we have all day together u are even gonna spend the night at my crib, i sat at d front and told the taxi to go to the cinema. During the trip to the cinema i had a little conversation with the taxi guy, from nowhere again my lady told the taxi guy in a rude voice 'please oga face your driving and stop shaking me driving into potholes anyhow abeg'...later on again she told the taxi man to totally put off the low radio station that was playing in the car, the last time he had a call and received it on Bluetooth o,she shouted then very rude telling the man please just drop that call. That's when i cautioned her to take it easy na.

We arrived at the cinema, she told me i should give her transport to go back home that she doesn't feel like staying out again...I tried to pet her,she just abandoned me took a taxi and went home. She has refused picking my calls since yesterday. Im busy at work weekdays,i dont really have time to go to her house.

Politics / Court Adjourns Senator Elisha Abbo intimacy gadget Shop Assault Case by pastorjesuseun1: 3:22pm On Jul 22, 2019
A magistrate court sitting in Zuba, Abuja, has directed the Nigerian police to make available all the evidence to be used in the trial of Senator Elisha Abbo on 20 August 2019 for the commencement of the trial.

The presiding magistrate, Abdullahi Ilellah, gave the order on Monday at the resumed hearing of the case.

He said he would not entertain any application for adjournment, urging the prosecution to speed up the investigation and serve the defendant all necessary materials.

The prosecution counsel, James Idachaba, applied for an adjournment of the matter in order to comply with the provision of section 350 (2) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) 2015.

He argued that they needed more time to conclude investigations on the proof of evidence in which they will rely on to prosecute the case.

He added that forensic analysis has to be conducted on the CCTV video evidence in line with evidence act. He said that they are being careful not to run foul of the law.

In his own submission the defence counsel, Adegbite Adeniyi noted that they were entitled to see the material evidence before the trial, adding that it will enable them to prepare for their defence.

The matter was adjourned until 20 August to begin the trial.

Abbo was arraigned on July 8 on a two-count charge which bordered on assault of a nursing woman at a intimacy gadget shop in Abuja.

The offence which is punishable under section 263 and 264 of penal code law.

Educational Services / A Bitter Story Of National Open University Of Nigeria by pastorjesuseun1: 2:54pm On Nov 16, 2018
The idea behind the existence of National Open University of Nigeria is to provide a flexible educational system for Nigerian students.

While efforts is been put in place to ensure this big goal is been achieved and more future role models spring up, more efforts need to be channeled into ensuring that this remains the focus.

A lot have gone wrong and NOUN has a lot of work to do to improve its system. It's a flexible program as you could study from anywhere, but it could be a waste of time, energy and resources if the following issues are not addressed swiftly.

1. Frequent cases of missing results (Results of students transferred from other study centres have been missing e.g results for 2018 first semester examination that ended July 2018, have not been released and till date nothing has been done about it by any staff, up to the Director of Study, Emevor Study Centre.

2. System error in result compilation. You write an exam with so much hope after adequate preparation, only to see Fs as your graded result. After much complaints staff claimed it was a NOUN system error nationwide and it would be corrected. We had to rewrite again as nothing was done to resolve this. Emevor study centre is a case study.

3. No staff shows concern to your complaints. They dont even have an answer to your questions, giving me a perception they were not trained. Nobody to hold responsible for their errors. Too bad!

70% of NOUN students are workers, studying and struggling to meet the requirements to earn a reasonable degree in school, after much stress at work, you get a little rest and you are left with few hours to study at the middle of the night, with nothing to show for it.

Students are frustrated, demotivated and highly disappointed due to these anomalies that have now become a consistent practice with NOUN system. Students are left to solve problems created by staff. I have friends and colleagues who opted out of the program as they believed they were been exorted and scammed by the school authority/unresolved errors.

With this level of FAILURE in NOUN, how do we raise role model.

Sincerely, I can not recommend NOUN to any Nigeria intending student, unless marked improvements on their systems are effected.

We need to voice out students! It's time to wake up. We can't be victims of the economy crisis and yet, our little stipend and effort turns out to be a waste due to National Open University of Nigeria Management errors.

I implore NOUN management to do something about this.

Phones / How To: Encrypt Your Iphone by pastorjesuseun1: 9:24pm On Aug 28, 2018
If you have an iPhone 3GS or later, an iPod touch 3rd generation or later, or any iPad, you can protect the contents of your device using encryption. That means that if someone gets physical access to your device, they will also need your passcode to decrypt what's stored on it, including contacts, instant messages or texts, call logs, and email.

In fact, most modern Apple devices encrypt their contents by default, with various levels of protection. But to protect against someone obtaining your data by physically stealing your device, you need to tie that encryption to a passphrase or code that only you know. See below for instructions on how to do this.

On devices running iOS 4–iOS 7:

Open the General settings and choose Passcode (or iTouch & Passcode).
Follow the prompts to create a passcode.

On device running iOS 8-iOS 11

Open the Settings app
Tap Touch ID & Passcode
Follow the prompts to create a passcode.

If your device is running iOS 8, disable Simple Passcode to create a code that is longer than 4 digits. With the release of iOS 9, Apple defaulted to a 6-digit passcode.

If you choose a passcode that's all-numeric, you will get a numeric keypad when you need to unlock your phone, which may be easier than typing a set of letters and symbols on a tiny virtual keyboard. However, we suggest choosing a passcode that's alphanumeric, and longer than 6 characters because it's simply harder to crack, even if Apple's hardware is designed to slow down password-cracking tools.

To customize your passcode, select "Passcode Options" and "Custom Alphanumeric Code." If you want to customize an existing passcode, select “Change Passcode” and then “Passcode Options.” You should also set the “Require passcode” option to “Immediately,” so that your device isn't unlocked when you are not using it.

Once you've set a passcode, scroll down to the bottom of the Passcode settings page. You should see a message that says “Data protection is enabled.” This means that the device's encryption is now tied to your passcode, and that most data on your phone will need that code to unlock it.

How to Encrypt Your iPhone 1

Here are some other iOS features you should think about using if you're dealing with private data: Anchor link

iTunes has an option to backup your device onto your computer. iTunes doesn't encrypt your backups by default. If you choose the “Encrypt backup” option on the Summary tab of your device in iTunes, iTunes will backup more confidential information (such as Wi-Fi passwords and email passwords), but will encrypt it all before saving it onto your computer. Be sure to keep the password you use here safe: restoring from backups is a rare event, but extra painful if you cannot remember the password to unlock the backup in an emergency.

If you back up to Apple's iCloud, you should use a long passphrase to protect the data, and keep that passphrase safe. While Apple encrypts most data in its backups, it may be possible for the company to obtain access for law enforcement purposes since Apple also controls the keys used for iCloud encryption.

If you turn on data protection as described above, you will also be able to delete your data on your device securely and quickly. In the Touch ID & Passcode settings, you can set your device to erase all its data after 10 failed passcode attempts. If you do this be sure your phone is backed up in case someone purposefully enters your passcode incorrectly.

According to Apple’s old Law Enforcement Guide, “Apple can extract certain categories of active data from passcode locked iOS devices. Specifically, the user generated active files on an iOS device that are contained in Apple’s native apps and for which the data is not encrypted using the passcode (“user generated active files”), can be extracted and provided to law enforcement on external media. Apple can perform this data extraction process on iOS devices running iOS 4 or more recent versions of iOS. Please note the only categories of user generated active files that can be provided to law enforcement, pursuant to a valid search warrant, are: SMS, photos, videos, contacts, audio recording, and call history. Apple cannot provide: email, calendar entries, or any third-party App data.”

The above information applies only to iOS devices running versions of iOS prior to 8.0.

Now, Apple states that “For all devices running iOS 8.0 and later versions, Apple is unable to perform an iOS device data extraction as the data typically sought by law enforcement is encrypted, and Apple does not possess the encryption key.”

REMEMBER: While Apple will be unable to extract data directly off a phone, if the device is set to sync with iCloud, or backup to a computer, much of the same data will indeed be accessible to law enforcement. Under most circumstances, iOS encryption is only effective when a device has been fully powered down (or freshly-rebooted, without being unlocked). Some attackers might be able to take valuable data from your device's memory when it's turned on. (They might even be able to take the data when it has just been turned off). Keep this in mind and, if possible, try to make sure your device is powered off (or rebooted and not unlocked) if you believe it's likely to be seized or stolen. At the time this guide was published, a few companies claimed they were able to break the passcodes of iPhones for law enforcement, but details surrounding these claims are unclear.

If you are concerned about your device getting lost or stolen, you can also set up your Apple device so that it can be erased remotely, using the “Find My iPhone” feature. Note that this will allow Apple to remotely request the location of your device at any time. You should balance the benefit of deleting data if you lose control of your device, with the risk of revealing your own position. (Mobile phones transmit this information to telephone companies as a matter of course; Wi-Fi devices like iPads and the iPod Touch do not.)
